The conversations we have with ourselves. The doubts we carry. The decisions we keep postponing because we are afraid of getting them wrong. Sometimes, the biggest thing standing between us and the life we want isn't a lack of ability. It is the voice in our head telling us that we are not ready. I have realised how easily we can become our own biggest obstacle. We overthink a decision until we are too tired to make it. We imagine every possible way something could go wrong. We worry about how people will perceive us. We compare our journey to someone else's and suddenly feel like we are falling behind.

And sometimes, we don't even realise that we are doing it.We call it being practical. We call it being careful. We tell ourselves that we are waiting for the right time. But sometimes, we are simply afraid. Afraid of failing. Afraid of being judged. Afraid of looking foolish. Afraid that we will give something our best and still not be good enough.

</line>

my caption

I have caught myself doing this more than once. Wanting something, but immediately thinking of all the reasons it might not work.

Having an idea, but questioning whether it is good enough. Wanting to take a chance, but wondering what people will think. And the more I thought about it, the more I realised something uncomfortable: sometimes the battle isn't happening outside of me at all.

It is happening in my head. And if I keep losing that battle there, it doesn't matter how many opportunities are in front of me. Because I will find a reason not to take them.

That is why I have started thinking differently about confidence. I don't think confidence means being certain that you will succeed.

It means trusting yourself enough to try even when you aren't certain. It means being able to say, "I don't know how this will turn out, but I am willing to find out." That shift sounds small, but I think it changes everything.

Because life will always give us reasons to doubt ourselves. There will always be someone who is ahead of us. Someone who seems more talented, more successful, more experienced, more confident. There will always be the possibility of rejection. There will always be the possibility of failure. If we wait until none of those things exist, we will spend our lives waiting.

So maybe the goal isn't to eliminate fear. Maybe the goal is to stop letting fear make our decisions. I am learning to question the thoughts that come into my head. Is this actually true, or am I assuming the worst? Am I genuinely not ready, or am I simply scared? Do I really not want this, or am I afraid of what might happen if I try?

And perhaps most importantly: What would I do if I trusted myself? That question has been powerful for me. Because sometimes we don't need another person's permission. We don't need another sign. We don't need to have everything figured out. We just need to believe that we can handle whatever comes next.

I also think we are too hard on ourselves when things don't work out. One failed attempt becomes "I'm not capable." One rejection becomes "I'm not good enough." One mistake becomes a definition of who we are. But an outcome is not an identity.

Something not working does not mean you are incapable of making it work someday. It simply means that particular attempt didn't work. We need to leave room for ourselves to learn. To change our minds. To start again. To be beginners. To be imperfect. To figure things out along the way. I am slowly learning that self-belief isn't something you find once and keep forever. You have to choose it again and again. Especially on the days when it doesn't come naturally. Especially when you are surrounded by uncertainty. Especially when nobody else can see what you are trying to build. And perhaps that is the real work. Not convincing the world that you can do something, but convincing yourself that you are worth taking the chance. So, if there is something you have been putting off because of fear, maybe ask yourself what is really stopping you. Not the practical reasons. Not the circumstances. But the voice inside your head. What is it telling you?And what would happen if, just this once, you didn't believe it?

Maybe you don't need to know exactly how everything will unfold. Maybe you just need enough courage to take the next step. Because the world outside may challenge you in a hundred different ways. But before you face any of them, you have to face yourself. Win the war in your head first.

Then go see what you are capable of.

The Girl Who Thought She Could

Becoming that girl again way. Not because I thought I was better than everyone else. I simply had this very natural belief that I could do things. There was a certain childlike excitement about life. I wanted to try things, learn things, participate, perform, compete. If I wanted something, my first thought wasn't “What if I can't?” It was “Why can't I?”

I think there is something beautiful about the way children believe in themselves. They don't spend as much time calculating the possibility of failure. They haven't yet learned to measure themselves through other people's opinions. They simply try. And I was very much that child.I danced. And I was good at it.

I remember participating in competitions where some of the people around me had much more experience than I did, yet I would still walk in believing I could win. And sometimes, I did. I won prizes competing against people who had been doing it for much longer. Looking back, I don't think it was only talent. I think a huge part of it was that I expected myself to do well.

The same thing happened with sports. If I wanted to get better, I practised. I didn't sit around wondering whether I was naturally good enough. I believed that if I worked hard enough, I could improve.

Even with studies, there was a similar mindset. There was an uncomplicated relationship between effort and possibility. If I want it, I'll work for it. If I practise, I'll get better. If someone else can do it, maybe I can too.

Somewhere along the way, though, life became more complicated.

<a you for.

You become aware of how you're perceived. You start comparing yourself. You experience rejection. You make mistakes that feel bigger than they actually are. You become conscious of expectations. You begin overthinking decisions that once felt instinctive.

And slowly, without even noticing it, confidence starts becoming conditional.

You begin asking:

What will people think?

What if I fail?

What if I'm not good enough?

What if I embarrass myself?

What if I start and can't follow through?

For me, fear of judgment and overthinking became much louder than they used to be.

And anxiety has a strange way of making you question things you once knew about yourself.

You can know that you're capable and still doubt yourself. You can have done something successfully before and still convince yourself that you won't be able to do it again.

You can have dreams and ideas and interests, but spend so much time thinking about them that you never actually begin.

I think that's one of the quieter tragedies of growing up.

We don't necessarily lose our abilities. Sometimes we just lose our willingness to trust ourselves. Lately, though, I've been trying to find that girl again. Not by trying to become my childhood self, because I'm not that person anymore. I've lived more. I've experienced more. I know that life doesn't always work out the way I want it to.

But perhaps self-belief as an adult isn't about being certain that everything will work out.

Maybe it's about being willing to try even when you're not certain. I've been gathering courage to do things I've wanted to do for a long time. Some of them might work. Some might not. Some might lead somewhere unexpected. Some might lead nowhere at all.

But I'm beginning to realise that the outcome isn't the only point. There is something powerful about saying:

“I want to do this, so I'm going to give myself a chance.”

Without needing everyone's approval first.

Without needing to know exactly where it will lead. Without waiting until I feel completely confident. Because maybe confidence doesn't always come before action.

Maybe sometimes action creates confidence. The more you do the things you're afraid of, the more evidence you give yourself that you can handle discomfort. The more you try, the more you learn. The more you fail and recover, the less frightening failure becomes.

And slowly, you start trusting yourself again. I've also started thinking about how much of our adult life is spent trying to become “realistic.” We learn to be practical. We learn to calculate risks. We learn to have backup plans. And of course, there is wisdom in that.

But I don't want practicality to completely replace wonder. I don't want to lose that part of me that gets excited about learning something new, trying something different, creating something just because I want to, or pursuing an idea simply because it makes me curious. I want some of that childlike belief back. Not the belief that I can have everything I want exactly when I want it.

But the belief that my desires are worth exploring. That I don't have to talk myself out of something before I've even tried.

That I can be a beginner.

That I can change my mind.

That I can fail.

That I can start again.

And perhaps most importantly, that I don't need to become a completely different person to deserve the things I want.

Maybe I just need to trust the person I already am a little more. I think self-belief isn't something we either have or don't have.

It is something we build, lose, rediscover and rebuild throughout our lives. Sometimes it looks like winning a competition. Sometimes it looks like practising when nobody is watching. And sometimes, as an adult, it looks incredibly ordinary. It looks like finally doing the thing you've been overthinking for months. It looks like putting yourself out there. It looks like trying something new without knowing whether you'll be good at it.

It looks like letting yourself be seen. It looks like choosing courage over the possibility of judgment. And perhaps that's where I am right now. Not completely fearless.

Not completely confident.

Just more willing to believe in myself again.

Cool People have usually to learn something.

A new dance form. A different style of movement. Something about the creative arts. A new skill. A subject I know very little about. Even when I’m not consciously looking for something new to do, I find myself curious about something.

I’ve realised that I don’t necessarily have a short attention span or a problem with commitment. I’m just genuinely interested in learning.

And I think there is something to be said for that.

We live in a culture that encourages us to specialise very early. Pick a career. Pick a skill. Become an expert. Build your personal brand around it. Be consistent.

There is obviously value in having expertise. But I sometimes wonder if we’ve taken the idea of “finding your thing” too seriously.

What if you have several things?

What if you love dance and yoga?

What if you enjoy acting, writing, photography, music, painting or learning languages?

What if none of them has to become your profession?

I think hobbies are often treated as something we do after the “important” parts of life are taken care of. Work comes first. Responsibilities come first. Then, if there is any time left, we can do something we enjoy.

But hobbies can actually contribute to the person we become.

Learning something outside your profession forces your brain to approach problems differently. Creative activities can make you more comfortable with experimentation. Physical practices can teach patience and awareness. Learning an art form can teach you how to be a beginner again.

And being a beginner is underrated.

There is something very humbling about being bad at something you genuinely want to learn.

When you are used to being competent at work or in your usual environment, picking up a completely unfamiliar skill puts you in a different position. You have to ask questions. You make mistakes. You improve slowly.

You remember what learning actually feels like.

I also think having different interests gives you unexpected connections.

The things you learn in one area often show up somewhere completely different.

A dancer may understand movement differently because of yoga.

Someone who acts may become a better communicator because they understand expression and body language.

Someone who paints may start noticing colour, composition and detail in everyday life.

Someone who writes may become better at understanding people simply because they spend more time observing them.

The point isn't that every hobby needs to make you more productive.

That's another trap we fall into.

Sometimes you can do something simply because you love it.

You don't need to monetise it.

You don't need to turn it into a career.

You don't need to become exceptionally good at it.

You don't even need to show anyone.

There is value in being a person with interests that belong only to you.

And perhaps that's the bigger reason I believe in having hobbies.

They give you an identity beyond your job.

Your career can change. Your circumstances can change. Your goals can change.

But the curiosity to keep learning can stay with you.

So if there is something you've been wanting to try, perhaps you don't need a good reason.

Take the class.

Pick up the instrument.

Try the dance form.

Learn the language.

Go to the workshop.

Start painting badly.

Read about something you know nothing about.

You don't have to know where it is going.

Maybe the point isn't to find the one thing you're meant to do.

Maybe the point is to keep discovering the different things that make you feel alive.
