The first half explores the covenants we make with fear — the agreements we strike with the thing we’re most afraid of to make life survivable.

The second half explores what Jesus has to say to each one of those fear covenants through the stories most of us have heard so many times they’ve lost their power.

This week he went back to John chapter 4 in the original language.

And what he found is nothing like what most of us were taught.

The woman at the well was not a cautionary tale. She was not being called out for moral failure. She was not an outcast skulking to the well at the wrong time of day to avoid being seen.

The word doesn’t say any of that.

What the original language says is something else entirely:

Here is a woman who has spent her entire life drawing from wells that couldn’t satisfy — looking for safety, belonging, acceptance, love — in every place she knew to look.

And Jesus doesn’t correct her. He doesn’t shame her. He doesn’t even immediately tell her she’s misunderstanding what he’s offering.

He makes her feel safe enough to tell the truth.

And then everything changes.

The hardest truths in my life have never been hidden from me.

They have simply been the ones I wasn’t ready to face.

So I learned to resist.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

I became busy.

Helpful.

Productive.

I read another book.

Started another project.

Thought one more thought.

Prayed one more prayer.

Anything but remain with the ache long enough to hear what it was trying to say.

For years, I mistook resistance for wisdom.

I thought I was being responsible.

Disciplined.

Patient.

Only later did I begin to notice that much of what I called wisdom was simply fear wearing a respectable face.

The Logos has a gentle way of uncovering what is true.

Not all at once.

Only what love has made us ready to see.

The false self rarely argues with that revelation.

It simply changes the subject.

It becomes busy.

Defensive.

Certain.

Distracted.

Anything to avoid the quiet place where truth is waiting.

I’ve begun to wonder if resistance isn’t the opposite of surrender.

Perhaps it is simply the fear that Love will ask us to let go of the person we’ve spent a lifetime trying to become.

The beautiful thing is this:

The Logos never forces His way past our resistance.

He waits.

Patiently.

Lovingly.

Until we are ready to look again.

Where do I most quickly look away when Love begins telling me the truth?

May you recognize your resistance without fearing it.

May the patience of God become greater than your fear.

And may the Love that has never stopped waiting gently lead you into the freedom of what is true.

There comes a moment after every honest question.

A moment when you begin seeing something you were not prepared to find.

Perhaps it’s an old wound.

A hidden belief.

A grief you’ve carried for years.

Or simply the realization that the person you’ve been trying so hard to become was never really you.

The temptation is almost always the same.

Look away.

Become busy.

Explain it.

Fix it.

Anything but remain.

For a long time, I thought courage meant pushing harder.

Trying more.

Becoming stronger.

I’ve slowly begun discovering something different.

Courage is often much quieter than that.

It is staying one moment longer than fear tells you to.

Remaining with the grief.

Remaining with the question.

Remaining with the silence.

Remaining long enough for love to say what fear never could.

Perhaps courage isn’t the absence of fear.

Perhaps it is trusting that love will still be there when the mask comes off.

That is not the courage to conquer.

It is the courage to remain.

Sometimes the bravest thing we will ever do is stay long enough for the Logos to do His gentle work.

May you find the courage to remain where love is inviting you to stay.

May fear lose its urgency in the presence of truth.

And may the God who has never hurried your becoming teach you to trust His patient work within you.

There is a way of looking at ourselves that never leads to healing.

It scrutinizes.

It compares.

It condemns.

It mistakes harshness for honesty.

For a long time, I believed that if I were gentle with myself, I would stop growing.

So I became my own harshest critic.

I thought condemnation would produce transformation.

It never did.

It only taught me to hide more carefully.

I’ve slowly begun discovering something different.

The truth does not become more true because it is spoken without kindness.

Neither does it become less true because it is spoken with gentleness.

Perhaps that is why the voice of shame is always in such a hurry.

Love is not.

Love is willing to remain.

To listen.

To understand before it speaks.

To tell the truth without withdrawing its presence.

I’ve begun wondering if one of the greatest acts of faith is learning to see ourselves the way God already does.

Not ignoring what is broken.

Not pretending everything is fine.

Simply refusing to believe that our wounds are the truest thing about us.

Perhaps gentleness isn’t the opposite of truth.

Perhaps it is the atmosphere in which truth finally becomes safe enough to be received.

What changes when I believe that God’s first posture toward me is gentleness?

May you learn to look upon yourself with the same gentleness with which God has always looked upon you.

May truth never become separated from love.

And may the kindness of Christ give you the courage to remain present to what He is gently revealing.

The real thing.

Shame always sounds certain.

It speaks in conclusions.

This is who you are.

You’ll never change.

You’ll always struggle with this.

Something is wrong with you.

Curiosity speaks differently.

It asks quieter questions.

I wonder where I learned that.

I wonder what this has been trying to protect.

I wonder why this feels so familiar.

I’ve noticed that some of the deepest changes in my life began the moment I stopped asking,

What’s wrong with me?

and began asking,

Where did I learn this?

That single question changed everything.

It didn’t excuse my choices.

It didn’t remove my responsibility.

It simply made compassion possible.

Shame has very little interest in understanding.

It only wants a verdict.

Curiosity is willing to linger.

To listen.

To pay attention.

Perhaps that is why it feels so threatening to shame.

The moment we become curious, shame begins losing its certainty.

Perhaps healing doesn’t begin when we finally find the right answer.

Perhaps it begins the moment we become curious enough to stop condemning ourselves.

Sometimes the kindest question we can ask isn’t,

“How do I fix this?”

It’s simply,

“What is this trying to protect?”

What in my life have I been condemning that might instead be asking to be understood?

May you have the courage to become curious about your own heart.

May compassion grow wherever condemnation once lived.

And may the God who knows you completely teach you to look upon yourself with the same gentleness with which He has always looked upon you.

And slowly — without ever deciding to — we start making things, saying things, becoming things that are built for the outside rather than sourced from the inside.

The interior life atrophies. The creative life follows. The self becomes a performance of the self.

There is a peculiar loneliness that comes from being admired.

Especially when the admiration is directed toward someone you had to become in order to survive.

The capable one.

The funny one.

The dependable one.

The strong one.

The spiritual one.

None of these are lies.

But neither are they the whole truth.

Sometimes we spend so many years becoming the person we believe others need that we quietly lose touch with the person we actually are.

The applause grows louder.

The ache grows deeper.

Because admiration can never satisfy the longing to be known.

Only love can do that.

And only love directed toward the real person.

I’ve begun to wonder if one of our deepest fears isn’t rejection.

It’s being discovered.

What if they see who I really am?

What if the version they’ve loved isn’t actually me?

Perhaps that’s why performance is so exhausting.

It asks us to keep earning a love that was never reaching us in the first place.

The mask can be admired.

The role can be celebrated.

The performance can receive a standing ovation.

But only the real person can receive love.

Perhaps freedom begins the moment we stop asking,

Who do I need to become?

and begin asking,

Who have I been all along?

May you grow weary of every performance that keeps you from being known.

May you discover the quiet courage to bring your whole self into the light.

And may you find the deep joy of being loved, not for who you have learned to become, but for who you have always been.

Most of the significant changes in my life did not begin with an answer.

They began with a question.

Not the kind of question looking for information.

The kind that quietly refused to leave.

Why am I afraid?

What story am I believeing?

Why do I keep returning to the same place?

What if I have mistaken a wound for the truth?

Questions have a way of unsettling us.

They interrupt certainty.

They expose assumptions we never realized we were carrying.

They loosen beliefs we inherited long before we knew we had inherited them.

Perhaps that’s why we spend so much of our lives trying to escape them.

We rush toward conclusions.

Quick answers.

Simple explanations.

Anything that quiets the discomfort of not knowing.

But I wonder if wisdom grows differently.

Jesus seemed remarkably comfortable with questions.

He asked them far more often than He answered them.

Not because He lacked truth.

Because questions have a way of inviting us to discover what no lecture can force us to see.

I’ve come to believe that some questions are sacred.

Not because they remain unanswered forever.

But because they slowly become the doorway through which we are changed.

Perhaps the goal isn’t to collect better answers.

Perhaps the invitation is to learn how to live with better questions.

May wonder become stronger than fear.

And may every question that draws you nearer to truth become another step toward the One who has never been afraid of your searching.

None of us enters the world believing we are unworthy.

Or that love must be earned.

Or that being hurt is weakness.

Or that our value depends on what we accomplish.

Someone teaches us those things.

Not always with words.

Often with silence.

With absence.

With praise that only comes when we perform.

With homes where anger wasn’t safe.

Or grief wasn’t welcome.

Or questions had no place to land.

Long before we develop convictions, we inherit stories.

We begin to believe things like:

Protection is love.

Feeling hurt is selfish.

If I need too much, people will leave.

If I work hard enough, maybe I’ll finally be enough.

Most of these beliefs were never chosen.

They were adapted.

They helped us make sense of the world we were given.

Perhaps they even helped us survive it.

Which is why I have become less interested in condemning my false beliefs and more interested in becoming curious about them.

Not,

What’s wrong with me?

But,

Where did I learn this?

Curiosity has a way of opening doors that shame keeps locked.

Because once we begin tracing a belief back to its source, we discover something remarkable.

A belief may explain how we’ve lived.

It does not have to determine how we continue.

Perhaps growing isn’t primarily about learning something new.

Perhaps it is about gently releasing the stories that were never true to begin with.

May you find the courage to question every story that tells you you are less loved than you are.

May you discover that curiosity is often kinder than condemnation.

And may the truth of God’s love gently loosen every belief that has kept your heart from resting in Him.

The well no one wants might be the only one worth drinking from.
