everytime i think of colonialism , i just want to sh*t bricks . the amount of infuriation it builds within me is immensely overwhelming . so , let’s talk about colonialism on black history .

firstly , the torture black people went through is more than just the words colonialism , apartheid or racism , it was an atrocious act of jealousy by white man .

colonialism : the act of taking control of another country or territory to gain political power , economic wealth and land .
apartheid : a system of institutionalised racial segregation and discrimination in South Africa that legally separated people based on race .
racism : the belief that people should be treated differently because of their race or ethnicity .

according to the research i’ve done , the early european colonialism in africa started in 1415 , when portugal invaded ceuta (a city in morocco) . around the 1400s and 1500s portugal had immense control over parts of africa through trade, military force and then settlement .

onto apartheid , this inhumane act was developed from centuries of colonialism & apparently, the word “apartheid” means “apartness” . in 1948 , the national party won south africa’s election and began creating a formal system of racial segregation .

the question stands : why did they think its deeply crucial to take all that black people own ? well , that would be because , we had the best music and entertainment , dance and culture , inventions and innovation , food and culinary influence , and etc . they came to our continent and vilified black excellence .

WE ARE TALKING ALL THING COLONISATION TODAY !

so , black child , let me remind you why you’re unique and hated by white man :

THE BEAUTY OF BLACK WOMEN’S HAIR !

an african woman’s hair serves as an identity , black is hair is so beautiful because , what do you mean i can wear my hair in different ways and still look gorgeous . well , white man saw black hair as inferior. straight hair was seen as “professional” . black people were pressured to change their appearance so that it would suit colonial expectations .

hair was also used to strip black people from their cultural identity . they were judged and excluded because of their hair , straightened hair was encouraged to access jobs , education and social acceptance . many faced pressure to alter their natural hair through chemical straightening or other methods .

the hate on black hair did not end because , we are still told in schools to not wear long braids , to tie our hair because it looks untidy , to not dye our hair but Samantha can wear highlights in her hair .

2 . THE BEAUTY OF BLACK/MELANIN SKIN !

racist systems promoted the idea that lighter/pale skin is more valuable and beautiful , creating colorism and feelings of shame on black skin . before european colonial rule , african societies had diverse cultures and communities where skin colour was simply part of human identity .

europeans developed racial systems that put them at the top of social hierarchy . some colonisers promoted the false idea that european festure represent beauty and civilisation , whereas melanin skin represents inferiority and primitiveness .

darker complexion was associated with being less educated , less capable , or undeserving of rights . these ideas were not based on truth because they were created to maintain unequal systems .

the difference in black people’s skin tones is a story of diversity , ancestry , geography and culture . black people are not a single group of appearance, africa has the GREATEST genetic diversity of any continent which is reflected in the wide range of skin tones found among african and african-descended people .

BLACK INTELLIGENCE ,SPIRITUALITY, TRADITIONS AND THE IDENTITY ITSELF !

black intelligence came as a challenging colonial stereotype . it is one of the most damaged ideas made my racist colonial systems , they made us think our intelligence is just pseudo intelligence and african people are intellectually inferior .

those inhumane ideas were used to justify the denial of africans getting access to equal education , limiting opportunities and excluding black people from positions of power . colonialism ignored black achievements because recognising african intelligence challenged the idea of european superiority . which is totally preposterous !

thats why HELEN ZILLE thinks africa would be suffering if white man had not colonized it , PATHETIC ! black people are so intelligent that white man hire more of them to keep their businesses going and thats food for thought !

black spirituality is so colonized , especially christianity and some black people are not aware so they stick to what they were taught by their ancestors that was engraved in their minds by europeans . black spirituality is a story of resilience , adaptation and resistance . colonialism reshaped african spirituality by introducing foreign religious systems and portraying indigenous african spiritual practices as inferior !

many communities believed that ancestors remain connected to the living and offered guidance and protection . rivers and mountains held spiritual significance . spirituality was woven into everyday life , birth , marriage , healing and death . african spirituality was not a single religion, it consisted of many different belief systems across the continent .

european colonisers viewed african spirituality as “pagan” and “primitive” . colonial authorities and missionaries attempted to replace independence beliefs with christianity that had already existed. the arrival of christianity created complex experiences for african communities. while some colonial missionaries used christianity alongside colonial systems of control , many africans embraced christianity in ways that reflected their own cultures and experiences .

african christians incorporated their african languages and traditions into worship , they created independent african churches , they used christian teachings to challenge oppression . spirituality became a space where people found meaning and dignity despite colonial rule .

african identity was shaped by rich and diverse societies with unique languages , traditions and customs , spiritual beliefs , family structures and political systems . colonialism attempted to create a sense of inferiority by attacking important parts of black identity :

skin : dark skin was unfairly associated with negative stereotypes .
hair : african hair was often viewed and unacceptable according to european beauty standards
history : african achievements were ignored or written through colonial perspective .
language : speaking european languages was associated with education and status .

being BLACK/AFRICAN holds so much power . black people carried so much torment and violence because of their ethnicity . their land , culture , identity and intelligence was stripped from them because of envy and immense jealousy. white men know if they did not oppress black people they would be no wealth for them thats why they left us with nothing but low paying jobs and poverty . they tried by all means to infantilise black people’s identity so that they can deliberately take what does not belong to them .

BLACK CHILD , appreciate the colour of your skin , your hair , tradition , intelligence and spirituality ! i hope that my article reminded you of the importance and significance of being black and carrying black supremacy with PRIDE !🫶🏽

“do you think education ACTUALLY liberated black people ?” a question i’d ask Nelson Mandel if he was still alive .

Steve Biko believed that education was a powerful tool to liberate black people . Biko also pushed for mental liberation , which meant not just going to school but changing how black people see themselves .

although education can open up economic opportunities , break cycles of poverty and help people think critically , in reality not all schools carry the same quality of education .

NOT ALL EDUCATION IS LIBERATING , Biko criticised the apartheid education system because it was designed to control and not empower . the same way my afrikaans teacher would not allow me to speak my african language in her afrikaans class .

education isn’t enough to fix inequality . we can all attend schools of different models but not everyone will be successful , some will face long term unemployment , poverty and limited access to better educational opportunities . alot of our people are highly educated , some are even PhD holders but they underemployed or not employed at all .

we have unqualified people that are in power , they were given the job through nepotism , yet high qualified individuals sit at home not knowing where they’re next meal will come from .

during apartheid education was a racial segregation in south africa which was designed to provide inferior education to black students . i have experienced this at my previous high school where i would sit on the opposite side of the class and the white learners sat on the other sode although we’re taught by the same teacher . at that particular school you had to pick between setswana home language and afrikaans home language . keep in mind i had been doing afrikaans FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE since grade 1 . i did not have the best experience at that school , my afrikaans teacher paid little to no attention to some black learners (we were a few because the others we doing setswana) and i felt like she wanted us to go to setswana , “where we belong” withoyt saying it .

i digressed .

education for black people should not be seen as a tool but rather a solution or a mechanism for a stable future . black people are very innovative and are able to succeed without the help of education . although society has already set out the route to a successful life ( go to school , get your degree and get a job ) , there are multiple ways in which you can be successful expeditiously without having to study for 7+ years .

education is still important BUT not sufficient on its own . Nelson Mandela strongly believed in education but practice was also involved . the struggle against apartheid included activism , policy change and resistance movements . Mandela also believed that education would help to create equal opportunities and open doors to jobs and leadership, allowing black south africans to fully participate in society .

he also emphasized that education isnt just about school , its about thinking critically, understanding your rights and being able to shape your life .

ultimately, while education is often seen as a way to freedom it can not single handedly liberate all black people . therefore , without dismantling systemic barriers, education alone cannot help anyone achieve true freedom .

hi , my name is Kgatontle and i’ve BEEN that one kid who wanted to tryout everything because i’d see that all the white girls are doing it .

“if they can do it , why can’t i ?” a question that used to play in my mind whenever i’d see a plethora of white girls playing a sport or being part of a culture activity but none of the black girls took part . i started off with ballet in grade 1 , and i thank God for making me black because it was in that ballet classroom where i’d show of my african abilities which was the gift of having rhythm .

i was the first black girl at that ballet academy , the dance instructor would consistently tell me how she loves my connection to the music and it was not even a talent , it is because im african . being the only black girl at that dance studio for 5 years showed me that some sports are not for “white” people and we should also venture into them too .

im not a singer , i do not have the best voice in the world but i went for choir auditions in grade 2 and somehow i got in . we were registered in so many competitions , i even had my first appearance on television when i was in grade 3 when we sang live on an afrikaans tv programme “kykNet” . it was literally the best experience of my life .

i forced my parents to buy me a tennis racket and i went to that tennis practice without a single clue what was going on but i was willing to learn , because none of the black kids tried tennis . even though i felt out of place , because i could not run fast enough to hit that tennis ball , i was at every practice immediately after choir to improve my tennis skills .

i then went on to try netball , this time i recruited a few friends and my love for netball grew remarkably. i even tried cricket and the boys in my class would go on about how its a “boy” sport (even though it was announced that the girls can join) . the statements they made showed me how close-minded they were and how society had already influenced their how they view life .

being a well-rounded and enthusiastic kid showed me that nothing should be labelled through gender or skin colour .

till today , im open to try new things even if its something that is only gonna last for a week . even if its something that makes me ruminate late at night , i’ll still go for it . i never enjoyed reading , i didnt even want to read in class but when i went on my little haitus , i bought a book just to expand my vocabulary and release some brain fog which was the best decision of my life .

the biggest risk you can take , is not taking a risk at all .

i was taking risks at the ripe age of 7 and im still doing it today . there is no such thing as “its a sport for white people” , “its a sport for boys” , “you can only join if you have the talent” . the best thing you can do for yourself is to just take the risk and go on with it .

i hope my little story inspires you to try out new things , even if you think you’re not good at it , trust me you’ll be amazed by the things you didn’t know you could do .
