Today, I want to highlight three mothers who played a significant role in raising sons who would benefit the Islamic ummah and leave a lasting impact on it.

I want to share their lives and journeys, not only as a source of inspiration, but as a reminder to keep striving and never give up. They were not perfect mothers. They were mothers who did their best, carried their responsibilities, persevered through challenges, and understood the importance of investing in their children.

When I give lectures, I often meet mothers who openly share their concerns, mothers who want to see their children grow into righteous individuals.

I know it isn’t easy. Raising children requires patience and strength. It requires you to keep trying, over and over again, even on the days you feel exhausted and wonder whether your efforts are actually making a difference.

But remember that seeds do not grow overnight. What you plant today may take time to show results, but with patience and consistency, it will grow and, one day, bear fruit.

The time and energy you invest in your children today will leave a lasting impact on them and shape their future. Your role as a mother is significant, and it is one of the best investments you can make. Never let anyone make you feel otherwise.

Before turning to the journeys of these mothers, I want to offer one piece of advice. I could give you an entire list, but I don’t think that would be meaningful. Instead, I will just focus on this one, which I hope stays with you.

Always have the right intention when raising your children

Let your intention behind every effort you make be for the sake of Allah.

Raising children already requires so much of our time and effort. Why not correct our intention and seek Allah’s reward for it? The very same effort becomes something entirely different when it is accompanied by the right intention.

You teach them Tawhid. You teach them to become strong, independent individuals. You teach them to speak the truth, to be grateful, to have good character, to treat others well. You will be rewarded for all of it in sha Allah. You teach your child how to recite al-Fatiḥah, every time they recite it, you receive a reward. You teach them how to pray, every time they do that, you have a share in that reward.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«مَنْ دَلَّ عَلَى خَيْرٍ فَلَهُ مِثْلُ أَجْرِ فَاعِلِهِ أَوْ قَالَ عَامِلِهِ» “Whoever leads to good, then for him is the same reward as the one who does it — or — who acts upon it.” [Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 2671]

The same principle applies to the everyday responsibilities of raising children. Making sure they have a clean home, clean clothes, and food on the table takes much of our time, so why not seek Allah’s reward for that same effort?

The scholars have a principle:

المُباحُ إذا قُصِدَ به وجهُ اللهِ صارَ طاعةً

“When a permissible act is done with the intention of seeking Allah’s pleasure, it becomes an act of obedience.” ((فتح الباري)) لابن حجر (5/368)))

The very same things you would have done regardless can, with the right intention, become something you are rewarded for. It is a matter of changing the intention behind what you were already doing.

The same applies to showing kindness to our children. Do not let them receive only the version of you that remains when everything else on your list is done. We carry so many responsibilities that, sometimes without even realizing it, we fall into a routine of moving from one task to the next, forgetting to slow down and give our children the time and attention they deserve.

Do not become so consumed by your responsibilities that you begin to interact with your children on autopilot. Be present with them, give them your attention, engage with them, and make them feel seen and valued.

We can be so present and engaged in the company of other people. Think about how we are when we’re with friends. We laugh, joke and show the best side of ourselves.

Let your children experience that too. Let them see the best version of you. Talk to them. Laugh with them. Ask them how their day was. Play with them. Listen to what they have to say. Take them to activities they enjoy. They do not need a perfect parent. But they do need a parent who is present, who sees them, hears them, and makes them feel that they matter.

Everything we do in this dunyah should have Allah as our ultimate goal. We are good to our family, our spouses, our children, and others for the sake of Allah. We treat them well for the sake of Allah. We show them patience for the sake of Allah. We support them in what is good, for the sake of Allah.

When the intention is right, even the most ordinary things become acts of worship. And in the end, that is the only thing that truly matters: that Allah is pleased with us.

We expect our reward from Allah for everything we do in life. That is where our focus should be. When our intention is for Allah, it does not matter how people respond to the good we do. Our goal is not their appreciation, but Allah’s reward and His pleasure.

﴿إِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُكُمْ لِوَجْهِ اللَّهِ لَا نُرِيدُ مِنكُمْ جَزَاءً وَلَا شُكُورًا﴾

“We feed you for the sake of Allah alone: no reward do we desire from you, nor thanks.” [Al-Insān: 9]

Now I will turn to the three mothers. I’ll keep it brief, so it doesn’t become too long to read.

The Mother of Imām Mālik ibn Anas

The mother of Imām Mālik ibn Anas played a role in guiding her son, advising him, and directing him toward the path of the scholars and their way from his early years. She was a righteous mother who raised her son well and clothed him in the garment of knowledge.

Let Imām Mālik tell of his mother himself. He said: I grew up as a boy, and I was taken with learning from the singers. My mother said: “My son, if a singer is ugly of face, no attention is paid to his singing. So leave singing and seek fiqh.” So I left the singers and followed the fuqahāʾ, and Allāh brought me to what you see.

She dressed her son in the clothing of scholars, a proper thobe and turban, and sent him to study with Rabiʿah ibn Abi ʿAbd al-Rahman, one of Madinah’s most respected teachers.

And then she said words that echo across centuries:

“Learn from his manners before his knowledge.” [Tartīb al-Madārik 1/130]

His name still shines among the great figures of fiqh. He is the second of the four imāms and the founder of the Mālikī school. He also authored the celebrated الموطأ- Al-Muwatta’, one of the most influential and beneficial books ever written, and among the earliest works of prophetic ḥadīth in the field.

The Mother of Imām al-Shāfiʿī

Muḥammad b. Idrīs al-Shāfiʿī was born in Gaza, in the land of al-Shām, in the year 150 AH. He was not yet two years old when his father died, and he was left in the care of his mother, Fāṭimah bint ʿAbdillāh al-Azdiyyah, who never ceased striving in raising him and educating him.

She carried him to Makkah, and she had her reasons. Makkah in that day was the land of knowledge and the descending-place of the scholars: there was an abundance of Tābiʿīn there, the surviving traces of the Ṣaḥābah, and their enduring sciences.

She bound him to the memorization of the Qurʾān, and he completed it at seven. Then he turned to the spring of the Sunnah and drank from it, memorizing the Muwaṭṭaʾ at ten. Then he sought knowledge in Makkah until he was granted permission to give fatwā before he was twenty.

He grew up poor, so poor that he memorized the Qurʾān in the kuttāb without paying his teacher a wage. Later, when he sat in the circles of the people of knowledge, he would go to the government office and ask the clerks for the papers they had no need of, so that he could write on their backs what he received in the lessons.

Al-Shāfiʿī said:

I was an orphan in my mother’s care, and she placed me in the kuttāb, and she had nothing to give the teacher. The teacher was content that I stand in for him when he rose. When I completed the Qurʾān I entered the masjid, and I would sit with the scholars and hear a ḥadīth or a masʾalah and memorize it. My mother never had anything to give me to buy paper with, so whenever I saw a bone gleaming I would take it and write on it, and when it was full I would throw it into an old jar we had.

Tāj al-Dīn al-Subkī said:

The mother of al-Shāfiʿī was, by the agreement of the transmitters, among the devoutly obedient worshippers, and among the most naturally intelligent of creation.

She confined her life to him and did not remarry. She laid out for his upbringing a single clear path and kept walking it with a resolve that did not tire, and she chose for him the highest of great matters and the noblest of stations.

The Mother of Imām al-Bukhārī

Al-Bukhārī grew up an orphan in his mother’s care, and she devoted herself to raising him upon the love of knowledge whatever it cost her. It is reported from al-Ḥākim that blindness struck him as a child, and that his mother kept supplicating to Allāh عز وجل until He returned his sight to him.

He travelled to Makkah with his mother and his brother Aḥmad for Ḥajj. His mother and brother returned to Bukhārā, and he remained behind in the city of worship and of scholars, at the source of knowledge and in its Arabic tongue. She preferred to give up his companionship and his nearness to her so that he might become what he became.

Then he travelled the lands, Iraq, al-Shām and Egypt. He said of himself that he wrote from one thousand and eighty men. His brilliance emerged, he distinguished himself above his peers, his name flew across the horizons, and he composed magnificent works, foremost among them Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, which was said to be the most authentic book after the Book of Allah. He also composed al-Adab al-Mufrad, which no Muslim who wishes to be cultivated by the manners of Islam can do without.

He continued to rise through the ranks of knowledge until his very presence became an adornment for the ummah and his days a season of good. Lands celebrated his arrival, and scholars wished to see him. Yaḥyā b. Jaʿfar al-Bīkandī said:

If I were able to add from my own lifespan to the life of Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl, I would do it; for my death is the death of one man, and the death of Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl is the passing away of knowledge.

Some time ago, something small happened that stayed with me and left me reflecting.

Whenever I visit the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ, I usually bring with me a few snacks for my toddler, especially if we plan to stay there for a while.

One day, we were sitting in the courtyard of the mosque, and my little one was eating, leaving crumbs on the carpet. An elderly man walked past, stopped, and told us to pick up the crumbs because there was a risk that someone might step on Allah’s blessing (meaning the crumbs). Then he continued on his way.

It was only a few words, but they stayed with me long after he had left. What struck me most was that his concern was not the carpet. Anyone who has visited the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ knows how much care is taken to keep it clean. His concern was the crumbs, because they were part of Allah’s provision and should not be stepped on.

That simple reminder changed the way I looked at something so ordinary. It made me realize how easily we become accustomed to Allah’s blessings until we hardly notice them anymore. What we dismiss as “just a few crumbs” is, in reality, part of the rizq Allah has provided for us. And when we learn to honour even the smallest blessings, we naturally become more appreciative of the greater ones as well.

And the same applies to everything else.

The few drops of water left in the bottle don’t have to go to waste, they can be poured into the kettle or used for something beneficial.

The bit of food left on the plate doesn’t have to end up in the bin, it can be finished, or saved for later.

The leftovers in the pot don’t have to be thrown out, they can be saved for the next day or frozen, they’ll keep for weeks.

It is about valuing every blessing Allah has given us, no matter how small it may seem.

Gratitude is not only expressed with our tongues. It is also something seen in our actions. It is reflected in how we treat what Allah has entrusted to us.

It is reflected in the way we care for our clothes, our health, our homes, and our time, because every one of these is a blessing from Allah.

It is reflected in using Allah’s blessings in ways that please Him, and staying away from what He has forbidden, especially when it comes to our phones.

We wake up healthy, often taking the blessing of good health for granted.

We drink clean water without thinking about those who have no access to it.

We open our refrigerators without realizing that there are people who do not know what their next meal will be.

May Allah make us among those who are truly grateful. Amin.

That moment also made me reflect on something else: the importance of sincerely advising one another.

Sometimes it feels as though we have become afraid to give advice. We worry that someone might feel offended or criticized, or that our intentions might be misunderstood. Yet when we look at many of our elders, we often see a natural sense of care in the way they advise others.

It reminds me of another moment, when I was in Sharjah and Maghrib was approaching. I entered a mosque and sat down straight away, completely forgetting to pray Tahiyyat al-Masjid. Not even a few seconds had passed before an elderly woman told me to pray two rak’ahs before sitting down next time I entered a mosque. To this day I remember her words every time I enter a mosque, may Allah reward her.

Of course, advice should always be given with wisdom, gentleness, and sincere intention. But we should never let the fear of people’s reactions stop us from reviving a Sunnah that may be the very reason someone draws closer to Allah.

At the same time, we also need to learn how to receive advice with humility. Not every reminder is a personal attack, and not every correction means someone is looking down on us. Often it means the exact opposite, a sign of love, that someone cared enough to remind us of something that could benefit us in this life and the next.

We should all strive to give advice with sincerity, receive it with humility, encourage one another towards what is good, and strengthen the bonds between us.

And this is part of what makes this Ummah unique. Allah described this Ummah as the best nation brought forth for mankind because it enjoins what is right and forbids what is wrong. Every time we remind one another and genuinely want good for one another, we are living up to that description.

Allah says:

﴾كُنتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ وَتُؤْمِنُون بِاللَّهِ﴿

“You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allāh” (Āl ʿImrān 3:110)

May Allah unite our hearts upon the truth, make us a means of goodness for one another, and accept from us. Amin.

I realised I’ve never really given you the chance to know me, especially since many of you have found my page recently. So I thought I’d introduce myself briefly. I hope that one day, in shaa Allah, I’ll be able to share my journey in more detail.

I’ll be honest, I don’t really enjoy talking about myself. I see myself as an imperfect servant of Allah, not someone worthy of much mention. May Allah forgive me my shortcomings.

I am a young mother of three, born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. I was raised by my mother, a truly amazing woman. She was our sole provider and worked long, exhausting days. Yet despite the weight of that responsibility, she raised us tirelessly and was always deeply concerned with our well-being, in matters of both deen and dunya.

She placed great emphasis on giving us an Islamic upbringing, taking us to the masjid and Islamic lectures, sending us to Qur’an school, and teaching us the fundamentals of Islam. These were a central part of our upbringing. One of my strongest memories of her is seeing her often making du’a for us, especially after finishing her salah. May Allah reward her abundantly, forgive her, and grant her Jannatul Firdaws.

My interest in seeking Islamic knowledge began during my secondary school years. Alongside my regular schooling, I attended Arabic classes where I studied Arabic grammar. I also took Qur’an lessons, focusing on tajweed, memorisation, and recitation, and attended Islamic lectures where I studied Aqeedah, Hadith, Tafsir, Fiqh, and other Islamic sciences. May Allah reward all of my teachers.

At home, I spent much time memorising classical texts studied by students of knowledge, such as Usool ath-Thalaathah, Al-Qawaa’id Al-Arba’ah, and other foundational works, following their traditional order of study.

Time passed, and I graduated from high school a year earlier than my peers.

That same summer I graduated, I applied to an Islamic program I had heard about, held at the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ. Admissions opened only once every three or four years, I can’t remember exactly, and by the qadr of Allah, they opened that very summer. It truly felt as if everything had fallen into place at exactly the right time, and indeed, Allah is the Best of Planners.

I then travelled to Madinah that same summer, in August, having just turned eighteen. I met the program director for an interview and sat the entrance exam, and alhamdulilah, I was accepted. The program has since been discontinued, but at that time admission was highly competitive due to the educational standards and requirements. Very few applicants were accepted.

In the program I studied under both male and female scholars and teachers, covering a wide range of Islamic sciences, including Aqeedah, Fiqh, Usool al-Fiqh, Hadith, Mustalah al-Hadith, Tafsir, Usool at-Tafsir, Tajweed, Arabic grammar, and more. Alongside our classes, we memorised Islamic texts and attended regular Qur’an sessions. With each passing year, we studied more advanced texts and went deeper into every subject.

Our classes took place in the mornings. Afterwards, I would often return to the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ after Asr to attend the Qur’an circles held there. After Maghrib, I would stay on and listen to the lessons of the scholars. I practically lived in the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ lol.

This went on for several years until, by Allah’s grace, I completed my studies and graduated. I had also finished memorising the Qur’an before graduating, alhamdulilah.

Those years were among the most beneficial of my life, yet they were also filled with challenges. I can truly say that these challenges carried lessons that shaped me. I hope to share more of what they taught me one day, in shaa Allah.

Above all, what I’m most grateful for is that Allah allowed me to study in the very place where the Prophet ﷺ, his Companions, and the great Imams after them taught Islam, and where the Companions themselves sat and sought knowledge from him ﷺ.

After graduating, I returned to Sweden.

Soon after, I enrolled in a university teacher education program specialising in lower secondary education, with English and History as my main subjects. It was actually my husband, may Allah bless and preserve him, who encouraged me on this path. He believed higher education would benefit me, and he was right. Those years taught me a great deal that still benefits me today.

It was also during that period, while I was still at university, that I began actively engaging in dawah, teaching classes, delivering lectures in masajid, and teaching the Qur’an, Arabic, and other Islamic subjects. I continued doing so for several years until I graduated. I then returned to Madinah, where I have lived ever since.

For the past seven to eight years, I’ve been involved in dawah in various capacities, giving lectures at masajid and for Islamic organisations across Sweden, which I visit regularly, and teaching courses both in person and online.

I don’t really see myself as having achieved anything extraordinary. I say this with all sincerity. If I have accomplished anything beneficial, or if any good has come through me, it is only because Allah allowed it to happen. I don’t attribute any success to myself.

I still have a long way to go, and I continue to learn and grow. A Muslim is never truly “finished” learning. Seeking knowledge is a lifelong journey, and we should always remain open to learning, improving, and benefiting from others.

I ask Allah to reward every person I have met along this journey, those who taught me, guided me, supported me, and had a hand in shaping who I am today.

I’ll end with a line from Imam ash-Shafi’i:

أحب الصالحين ولست منهم

“I love the righteous, though I am not of them.”

These words stay with me. I love the righteous, yet I know how far I am from being among them.

May Allah grant all of us success, make our deeds sincere for His sake alone, and allow us to seek only His pleasure. Ameen.

När jag kom till Medina första gången 2015 lärde jag känna några äldre systrar från UK som hade bott i Medina i flera år. De första åren i Medina var väldigt utmanande för mig. Jag hade svårt med språket, kulturen, miljön etc. Dessa systrar hjälpte mig att navigera genom alla dessa utmaningar och tog emot mig med öppna armar. De var alltid där, även när det var som svårast. Må Allah belöna dem rikligt.

Det här fick mig att reflektera över när Profeten ﷺ gjorde muhajirun och ansar till bröder. Muhajiron är de som utvandrade med Profeten ﷺ från Mecka till Medina, och ansar är de som tog emot och hjälpte dem i Medina.

Muhajiron hade lämnat sina familjer, hem och ägodelar i Mekka och anlände till Medina, helt försvagade.

Ansar tog emot dem med öppna armar, delade med sig av sina tillgångar och sina hem, och gav dem stöd. Detta skapade samhörighet mellan deras hjärtan, tog bort känslan av främlingskap och ersatte den med trygghet.

Det fick mig att tänka på hur viktigt det är med ett starkt supportsystem, något som är ovärderligt, inte bara när man flyttar till ett nytt land, utan i livets alla skeden. Det gör otroligt mycket för ens mående.

Hur som helst har jag haft kontakt med dessa systrar sedan dess. Vi har träffats regelbundet och besökt varandra genom åren. Igår gifte sig en av systrarnas döttrar, och vi samlades för att fira henne.

Må Allah välsigna deras äktenskap och skänka dem all lycka ❤️

It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that: the Messenger of Allah said: “There is nothing like marriage, for two who love one another.” [Sunan Ibn Majah 1847].

Det var här det allra första slaget i islam ägde rum, det första öppna slaget mellan Profetenﷺ och Quraysh. Trots att muslimerna var färre i antal, tog de hem segern i detta slag.

Slaget tog plats den 17 Ramadan, år 2 efter Hijra. En dag som för alltid skulle förändra historien. Allah kallade det Själv"Yawm al-Furqan". Dagen då sanning och falskhet möttes ansikte mot ansikte.

Muslimerna var 319 män, 100 från Muhajirin och resten från Ansar. De hade bara två hästar med sig och endast 70 kameler, som två eller tre män delade på. Sträckan mellan Medina och Badr var över 160 km.

Profeten ﷺ själv, delade kamel med Ali ibn Abi Talib och Abu Lubaba. När det blev Profetens ﷺ tur att gå till fots erbjöd sig Ali och Abu Lubaba: "Vi går för din skull, vila du." Men Profeten ﷺ svarade: "Ni är inte starkare än mig, och jag behöver Allahs belöning lika mycket som ni." [Ahmad, 3901]

(Det här tyder på sann ledarskap och profetens ‎ﷺ ödmjukhet. Han vägrade ta några privilegier)

Natten innan striden:

Den 17 Ramadan lägrade sig muslimerna vid Badr med Quraysh läger framför sig.

Ali ibn Abi Talib berättar i Musnad Ahmad med en autentisk kedja: "Den natten sov varenda man bland oss, utom Profeten ﷺ. Han stod i bön vid ett träd och bad ända till gryningen. På natten föll också lite regn över oss och vi sökte skydd under träden och sköldarna. Profeten ﷺ fortsatte hela natten att be till sin Herre: 'Ya Allah, om denna lilla skara förgörs, kommer Du inte längre att dyrkas på denna jord.'"

Han bad så intensivt att kappan föll från hans axlar. Abu Bakr lade den tillbaka och sa: "Det räcker, ya Rasulallah, Allah kommer att uppfylla Sitt löfte till dig."

Striden:

Striden började med en duell. Utba ibn Rabi'a trädde fram med sin son al-Walid och sin bror Shayba [alla från Quraysh] och ropade:"Vem vågar möta oss?" Några unga män från Ansar trädde fram, men Utba sa: "Vi vill inte ha er – vi vill ha våra kusiner."

Då sa Profeten ﷺ: "Res dig, Hamza. Res dig, Ali. Res dig, Ubayda ibn al-Harith."

Ali berättar: Hamza gick mot Utba, jag gick mot Shayba, och mellan Ubayda och al-Walid utväxlades hårda slag tills båda sårades svårt. Sedan rusade Hamza och jag till och dräpte al-Walid, och vi bar bort Ubayda.

Slaget bröt ut och Ibn al-Qayyim beskriver det som: "Krigshjulet snurrade, elden blossade och striden hårdnade. (Zad Al-Ma’ad (3/ 180-181))

Änglarna vid Badr:

Det som gör Badr unikt är att Allah inte lät muslimerna strida ensamma. Allah sände ner änglar som stred med muslimerna. I Koranen säger Allah: "När ni ropade till er Herre och Han svarade er: 'Jag ska förstärka er med tusen änglar i rad efter rad.'" [Al-Anfal: 9]

Och i Sahih al-Bukhari berättar Ibn Abbas att Profeten ﷺ pekade ut under striden och sa: "Där är Jibril – han håller i sin hästs huvud, iklädd krigsutrustning." [3995]

Och Ibn Abbas berättar att en muslimsk man jagade en av de otrogna framför sig, då hörde han ett piskrapp ovanför sig och en röst: "Framåt, Hayzum!" Han såg hur den otrogna framför honom föll ner på rygg – hans näsa och ansikte bar märken som av ett piskrapp och hade blivit gröna. Han berättade detta för Profeten ﷺ som svarade: "Du talar sant – det var hjälp från den tredje himlen." [Muslim 1763].

70 män från Quraysh dödades och 70 togs till fånga, medan 14 av följeslagarna dog som martyrer.

Vi lär oss mycket av det här slaget:

Trots att muslimerna var färre i antal, tog de hem segern i detta slag. 319 muslimer mot 1 000 välbeväpnade krigare. Ändå var det muslimerna som segrade. Badr är det tydligaste beviset på att seger inte avgörs av styrka eller antal, den kommer från Allah.

Bönen är det kraftfullaste vapnet. Hela natten innan striden stod Profeten ﷺ i bön medan alla andra sov. Hans vädjan till Allah var så intensiv att kappan föll från hans axlar. Det var den bönen som öppnade himlens portar och fick änglarna att stiga ner.

﴾ وَلَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ بِبَدْرٍ وَأَنْتُمْ أَذِلَّةٌ فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ ﴿ "Allah gav er seger vid Badr, när ni var få och svaga – frukta då Allah, så att ni kan vara tacksamma." [Al Imran: 123].
