The 60th Annual Polish American Family Festival returns with traditional music, dancing, carnival rides, and plenty of Polish and American festival food.

One of Philadelphia’s biggest cycling events is BACK.

After a 10-year hiatus, the Philadelphia Cycling Classic returns for the first time since 2016 as part of the city’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

The race features both men’s and women’s competitions along a 14.4-mile circuit through Philadelphia, including the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Lemon Hill, and the famous Manayunk Wall, which includes a whopping 17% grade.

But you definitely don’t have to be a cycling family to enjoy this event.

FREE Philadelphia Cycling Classic Fan Fest

The weekend-long Fan Fest is completely FREE to attend and includes plenty of activities for kids and families.

Expect:

• Mini bike courses

• Bike demonstrations

From apple picking in New York’s Hudson Valley to mountain adventures in the Poconos and even fall beach days in Cape May and Virginia Beach, here are 7 fall weekend trips from Philly that families will actually enjoy.

Hudson Valley, New York

🚗 About 2.5–3.5 hours from Philadelphia

I grew up in the Hudson Valley, so this one will always have a special place on my list. But fall here really is hard to beat.

Think apple orchards, mountains covered in fall colors, cute little towns, cider donuts, pumpkins and some of the BEST Halloween experiences.

Things to do with kids:

🎃 The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze
If you’re visiting during spooky season, put this on your list. Walk through incredible displays created with thousands of illuminated pumpkins. Pair it with a day exploring Westchester and Sleepy Hollow for the ultimate October weekend.

🧱 LEGOLAND New York
Spend a day at LEGOLAND New York in Goshen and use the rest of your weekend to explore the farms, orchards and small towns nearby.

🐐 All One One All Farm
AOOA Farm in Goshen is a regenerative farm with animals, food and family-friendly programming. Check their calendar for seasonal events.

🍎 Go apple picking
You can’t do a Hudson Valley fall weekend without an orchard! Look into Masker Orchards, Apple Dave’s Orchards, Pennings Orchard, Fishkill Farms and Lawrence Farms Orchards, depending on where you’re staying.

🥧 Jones Farm
If you’re near Cornwall, Jones Farm is one of my favorite stops. Grab baked goods and treats and browse the shop. It’s the perfect cozy fall stop.

🥾 Bear Mountain State Park
Head to Bear Mountain for fall foliage, take the kids on a hike and check the calendar for Oktoberfest and other fall festivities.

Don’t skip the small towns!

Cornwall-on-Hudson is adorable, Sugar Loaf is a tiny arts village that’s fun to wander, and if you’re heading toward Westchester, make time for Sleepy Hollow.

KFP TIP: The Hudson Valley is HUGE. Choose where you want to stay first and then plan activities nearby so you don’t spend your entire getaway driving.

The Poconos, Pennsylvania

🚗 About 1.5–2.5 hours from Philadelphia

The Poconos are one of the easiest fall weekend getaways from Philly because you can make the trip whatever your family wants it to be.

Mountain adventures? Yep.

Fall foliage? Obviously.

Wine while your kids play on a playground? Now we’re talking.

Things to do with kids:

🎢 Camelback Mountain Adventures
Head to Camelback for mountain activities and ride the mountain coaster. It’s such a fun way to experience the mountains during fall.

🍇 Mountain View Vineyard
Parents, SAVE THIS ONE. Mountain View Vineyard has wine, food, gorgeous outdoor space AND a playground for the kids.

Grab a glass of wine or something to eat while the kids get some playground time. This is exactly the type of family-friendly winery I want to know about when we’re traveling.

🍺 Barley Creek Brewing Company
A great casual stop for food and drinks during your Pocono weekend.

🌳 Mountain View Park
Need to let the kids RUN? Add some playground time at Mountain View Park.

🌮 Zack’s Taco Shack
Grab takeout from Zack’s and bring it back to your hotel, resort or rental for an easy dinner.

🛍️ The Crossings Premium Outlets
There are tons of stores here, but I have one extremely important piece of information:

There is a lululemon outlet.

Look into Serenité Private Residence Club if you’re interested in more of a long-term mountain stay option rather than a traditional hotel weekend.

KFP TIP: Book somewhere with activities or amenities on-site. Fall weather can be unpredictable, and having a backup plan built into your accommodations makes everything easier

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

🚗 About 1.5 hours from Philadelphia

Lancaster is SUCH an easy fall getaway with younger kids.

You get farms, trains, amusement parks, playgrounds, shopping and a ridiculous amount of good food without spending half the weekend in the car.

Things to do with kids:

☕ Speckled Hen Coffee
One of my favorite family finds! Grab coffee and food while the kids enjoy the cutest indoor play area.

Coffee + indoor play area = vacation math I can support.

🍽️ Shady Maple Smorgasbord
Shady Maple isn’t just somewhere to eat. It’s an EXPERIENCE.

The buffet is enormous, so come hungry.

🚂 Strasburg Rail Road
Take a scenic train ride through Lancaster County and leave time to check out the play area and nearby railroad museum.

🍦 Fireside Cafe
Ice cream, coffee AND a playground. Add this one to the list.

🎢 Dutch Wonderland
Dutch Wonderland is so much fun for younger kids and can easily fill an entire day. During fall, check out their seasonal Halloween events too.

🛍️ Kitchen Kettle Village
Spend a few hours wandering the shops, grabbing treats and exploring.

⛺ Go glamping
Want to make the weekend even more fun? Look into Sun Retreats for family-friendly camping and glamping options.

KFP TIP: Don’t overbook Lancaster. Pick one big attraction each day and add one or two smaller stops around it.

Wilmington & the Brandywine Valley, Delaware

🚗 About 45–60 minutes from Philadelphia

Wilmington might be the most underrated family getaway on this list.

It’s close enough for an easy fall day trip from Philadelphia, but there’s more than enough to do to justify staying overnight.

Things to do with kids:

🎃 Ramsey’s Farm
Add Ramsey’s Farm for pumpkins and classic fall farm fun.

🌺 Longwood Gardens
Longwood is gorgeous in the fall. Walk the gardens, see the changing foliage and check their calendar for seasonal events.

🏡 Winterthur
Explore the gardens and grounds and make sure to find the kid-friendly areas while you’re there.

🧒 Delaware Children’s Museum
Perfect for younger kids and one of my favorite options to keep in your back pocket for a rainy fall day.

🌿 Mt. Cuba Center
Head here for gardens, outdoor exploring and more time in nature.

🍻 Constitution Yards
Add a casual food and drink stop to your Wilmington weekend.

KFP TIP: This is my pick when you really want to GO somewhere but don’t want to spend hours in the car. You can leave Philly in the morning and be doing your first activity before lunch.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

🚗 About 5 hours from Philadelphia

Who says fall has to mean mountains?

Virginia Beach is one of my favorite unexpected fall family getaways because you can enjoy the ocean without peak summer crowds.

This is for the family that’s simply not ready to let beach season go.

Where to stay:

🏨 Hilton Garden Inn Virginia Beach Oceanfront

Stay right by the ocean so you can easily work beach walks, sunsets and spontaneous sand time into your weekend.

Things to do with kids:

🏖️ Oceanfront Beach
Bring sweatshirts, let the kids run, collect shells and enjoy a much quieter version of Virginia Beach.

🌿 Owl Creek Landing
Add Owl Creek Landing for some outdoor family time away from the boardwalk.

🎃 Hunt Club Farm
A great fall stop with seasonal family activities. Check their calendar for what’s happening during your visit.

🍽️ Sage Kitchen
Add Sage Kitchen to your food list for the weekend.

🐬 Rudee Tours
Get out on the water with Rudee Tours. Their offerings vary by season, so check what’s available during your trip.

KFP TIP: Virginia Beach is the farthest drive on this list, so I would make this at least a two-night getaway.

Cape May, New Jersey

🚗 About 1.5–2 hours from Philadelphia

Cape May is NOT just for summer.

Fall in Cape May means beach days without the summer crowds, outdoor adventures, farms, shopping and an excuse to spend an entire weekend down the shore.

Things to do with kids:

🚲 Revolution Rail
Try a railbike adventure for a completely different way to get outside with the kids.

🌾 Beach Plum Farm
Walk around the farm, eat, explore and enjoy a slow fall afternoon.

🏖️ Have a fall beach day
You don’t need bathing suits to enjoy the beach. Bring layers, hunt for shells and let the kids run.

🍔 Mad Viking
Add Mad Viking to your Cape May food list.

🍺 Cape May Brewing Company
A fun adult-friendly stop to work into your family weekend.

🦁 Cape May County Park & Zoo
One of the best family attractions in the area is also FREE. Spend a few hours at the zoo before heading into Cape May.

🛍️ Washington Street Mall
Walk around downtown, browse the shops and grab something to eat.

And while we’re discussing important shopping information, Cape May also has a GREAT TJ Maxx/HomeGoods.

Bucks County, Pennsylvania

🚗 About 45–90 minutes from Philadelphia

If you want pumpkins, scarecrows and classic fall activities without committing to a big road trip, Bucks County is one of the best fall day trips from Philadelphia with kids.

You can easily visit for the day or stay overnight and turn it into a full fall weekend.

Things to do with kids:

🍂 Peddler’s Village
Fall at Peddler’s Village is adorable. Walk around to see the annual scarecrow displays, shop and grab something to eat.

🎃 Hellerick’s Family Farm

America 250 Weekend on the Philly Waterfront

The Delaware River Waterfront is celebrating America 250 with a full weekend of family-friendly fun at Cherry Street Pier, Independence Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest, and Spruce Street Harbor Park.

Families can enjoy roller skating, boardwalk rides, arcade games, hammocks, waterfront food and drinks, live entertainment, and a big fireworks moment over the river. The fireworks are scheduled for Saturday, June 27 at 9:30 PM, with an America 250 Concert & Fireworks event at Summerfest from 8–10 PM.

This is a great free evening option if you want a festive summer night without leaving the city. I’d plan to arrive early, especially if you want to skate, grab food, or find a good fireworks viewing spot.

Tips for Outdoor Movie Nights with Kids in Philly

Outdoor movie nights are one of the easiest free summer activities for families in Philadelphia. A little planning makes the night so much smoother.

Bring a blanket or low chairs, bug spray, water bottles, and snacks. For later movie nights, pajamas are always a good idea for kids, especially if you’re heading home after bedtime. I also recommend arriving early so you can find a good spot before the movie starts.

Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival Returns to Franklin Square

1. Mt. Cuba Center’s Bluey’s Woods

Winterthur’s Enchanted Woods may be one of the most magical children’s gardens near Philadelphia. This three-acre fairy-tale garden is designed to feel like it was created by fairies, and it truly delivers on the whimsy.

Also note this trip involves A LOT of walking, so bring comfy shoes and a stroller if your kids are the “PICK ME UP” type.

Can You Visit All Three in One Day?

Technically, yes, but with young kids, I would not try to squeeze all three into one day unless you are moving fast. Each garden is special enough to be its own outing, and children will want time to explore.

A better plan would be:

Easy half-day trip: Pick one garden and pair it with lunch nearby!
Full-day adventure: Choose two gardens and keep the schedule flexible + pack a picnic to enjoy at one of them.
Best magical garden day: Winterthur’s Enchanted Woods plus Mt. Cuba Center, since both are in Delaware / only 10 min apart from each other.
Best rainy day option: Longwood Gardens Children’s Garden, since it is indoors - this can be enjoyed all year round, unlike the other two!

What to Bring Along on these Garden Adventures:

For the easiest visit, pack:

• Comfortable walking shoes

• Water bottles

• Snacks

• Sunscreen

• Bug spray

• A change of clothes for Longwood’s water features!

• A baby carrier or all-terrain stroller for all three of these ESP if your kiddos don’t love walking a lot.
