Suno lost the GEMA lawsuit. and instead of doing what every other licensed platform does — paying a fair licensing fee, taking the L, and moving on — they quietly embedded invisible watermarks into every single track generated on the platform.

No warning to the paying subscribers who had already built entire workflows around this tool.

Just silence..... not only that...

...and then a watermark sitting inside your music that you didn’t ask for, didn’t agree to, and cannot remove without potentially violating their new terms.

Bro. Nobody asked for this. Okay so an 18 year old senior in high school dropped this question and the answers from working musicians are genuinely some of the most honest things I’ve read about the music industry in a while

They’ve put thousands of hours into guitar. would die for it. wondering whether to pursue it through college or whether they’re about to send themselves into a pit of poverty.

The answers did not sugarcoat it.

Someone who actually knows people making a living at it broke down what those people look like in real life. exceptional at their instruments and able to sight read very well. enjoy playing other people’s music and not super concerned about getting paid for original work. play a huge variety of genres. prepared to travel frequently and far. and not wealthy.

That last one sitting there alone is doing a lot of work lol

.A veteran who made their living as a player, guitar repairman, touring guitar tech, teacher, and audio engineer for decades said it straight. it’s a 24/7 365 hustle and the better you are at wearing many different hats the more work you get. you don’t have to be the best but you have to learn quickly, show up on time, and be kind to everyone. that’s 60+ hours a week for a mediocre income. after a couple of decades they got fed up and now work 40 hours for three times the money. their advice to their own musician son? get a job in an industry that pays so well you can afford to take weeks off to tour and make music a hobby.

Someone else put it even more plainly. even if you’re amazing you’re most likely broke or scraping by. social media makes it more doable than ever but also more saturated than ever. stay consistent if you love it but absolutely do not rely on it. it’s a massive stroke of luck combined with meeting the right people.

And the instrument you play matters more than people admit. bass players and drummers who are actually good can almost always find work. guitar players are everywhere. if you want to work as a musician your odds shift dramatically based on what you play and how in-demand that skill actually is.

The most honest framing of all? making a living in music isn’t “playing music.” it’s marketing your skillset until you have enough clients and gigs to piece together a full income. the romanticized version and the reality are two very different jobs.

Try it while you’re young. the older you get the worse it is to be broke. that’s not pessimism. that’s just the math.

why are we like this?

People that like the IDEA of being in a band but not actually being in a band.

You cannot unsee it once you read it. the one who shows up to one rehearsal, disappears for three weeks, comes back with zero excuses and maximum opinions about the setlist. we all know this person.

Someone pointed out it extends to partners too. dated someone who loved saying “my boyfriend is in a reasonably popular local band” but got mad every time there was an actual gig 😂 wanted the status. hated the reality.

One person quit playing in bands entirely because their spouse would lose it if rehearsal went longer than two hours. guess what that does to a musician long term.

Then there’s the ego thing. musicians are self-centered by nature and kind of have to be. Mainly because they are creators.. And they are thriving out of their own creations...

But the fairest take — everyone has different goals at different times. some people have 40 hour jobs and just want to make music with kind people. keeping a cohesive band together long term is practically an act of God. 🎵

The most concerning thing is this:

The “belief that outlasts every reasonable signal telling them to stop.”

No traction, proof, and guarantee right? — and they keep building anyway.

That’s not confidence in the normal sense. That’s delusion, in the best possible way.

and honestly? kind of heroic ngl.

The action never really comes from chasing money directly. It comes from an obsession with solving someone else’s actual problem. Money shows up as a byproduct of that obsession, almost as an afterthought once the problem gets solved well enough (funny how that works lol).

Failure gets treated completely differently in this world too. Employees are trained to avoid mistakes at all costs. Entrepreneurs need the opposite instinct

— normalize failure fast, fail cheap, fail early, and treat every miss as information instead of identity. The faster the failure, the faster the correction, the faster the next attempt gets sharper.

Then there’s the quiet reward almost nobody talks about: a long-term client who keeps coming back. That kind of loyalty means something got built right, consistently, over time. It’s proof the belief wasn’t misplaced. 🙏

Employment feels like a river. Steady, predictable, moving in one direction, rarely surprising anyone. Owning a business feels like the open sea. Some months bring calm water. Okay so this my observation... 🎸🍻

Every band ends up with someone who owns the PA. nobody plans it. one guy buys a mixer because the venue’s system kept cutting out mid set and five years later he’s the sound guy whether he signed up for that or not.

Lights are going the exact same direction. and most bands haven’t noticed yet.

Here’s the thing that actually gets me. bands will argue for a month about three hundred dollars of overdrive pedal that literally nobody in the audience could pick out of a lineup. then walk onto a stage lit by two work lights and whatever the bar has aimed at the dartboard.

The sound obsession is real. the lighting blindspot is even realer lol. 🤣

... And the bands getting called back for gigs consistently???

they have lights.

Because at some point one person in the band sat down with a manual, bought a few fixtures off local sale pages over two years, and just started building looks while everyone else stayed out of it entirely.

Nothing in the rig has to match either. two Betopper beams next to a pair of older Chauvet wash cans next to a par can that predates the band. doesn’t matter. what matters is that one person owns it and actually programs it before the show.

Because when it was a group decision nothing ever got programmed. they’d show up with four fixtures sitting in a case because none of them did the homework that week 💀

And here’s the LED era reality that makes this even more of a no-brainer now. stage lighting used to be a genuine nightmare. halogen fixtures that got so hot they’d literally sunburn you through a full set. cellophane color gels that somehow made it even hotter. one guy spent an entire decade putting on sunscreen before gigs until the band could finally afford something decent.

Now you can build a legitimate stage setup buying used LEDs off marketplace for a fraction of what anyone spent on their guitar rig. there’s actually no excuse anymore.

The bands with lights always get the calls. it’s part of the entertainment. it’s a show. the more memorable the better. and a solo artist doing a one person show especially needs this because lights make up for the physical presence a full band creates just by existing on stage.

This is one of those things that feels completely obvious the moment someone says it out loud and yet most bands are still out here walking into bars hoping the venue sorted it.

They didn’t. they never do 😂

Trying to get a client to choose your service — you’re selling.

Presenting an idea to your team — you’re selling.

Even getting someone to simply believe in you counts as selling! ~~

Sales..... the way I mentioned it, ranks among the most powerful skills anyone can develop. You can be talented, highly educated, creative, hardworking — but if the value can’t be communicated clearly, people may never see it (this trips up so many talented people lol). The marketplace rewards the person who can communicate why their solution matters, more than it automatically rewards raw talent.

There’s another layer underneath all of this. Good sales runs on understanding people, not manipulating them. What do they actually want? What are they afraid of? What problem are they really trying to solve? What would actually make them say yes? Reading the room, listening carefully, asking better questions, understanding motivations, and positioning value all matter more than any script. 💬

People rarely buy the thing itself. They buy what they believe that thing will do for them. A client buying audio editing is really buying better content. A business buying automation is really buying saved time. An employer promoting someone talented is really betting on someone they believe can create more value going forward.

A few things sales teaches that others miss:

1. Communication multiplies talent

Being great at something means little if nobody understands the value behind it.

2. Don’t focus on “I”, Focus on the Client.

The better someone’s needs are understood, the better a solution can be communicated.

3. Everything gets easier with persuasion

Careers, relationships, negotiations, business, leadership — all of it runs on the same underlying skill.

Build relationships, and get people to believe in a vision. Life is full of decisions, and the person who can communicate value holds an enormous advantage.

Music is the only Hobby Where People Expect you to be a “Pro” the Time you use an Instrument. 🎸

So..

this observation just hit ME about people and I cannot stop daydreaming about it because it’s so true and nobody talks about it well enough.

if you bike, nobody expects you to be in the Tour de France. if you draw, nobody expects gallery level work on day one. if you do woodworking, people are just happy you made something.

but the second someone finds out you play guitar?

“oh play something for me.” and not just anything. they want the full shred. they want the riff from their favorite song played perfectly. they want you to sound like the guy they’ve been listening to for 20 years who practices 8 hours a day.

and if you can’t do that immediately they’re somehow disappointed.

A professional bass player made the funniest point about this. been playing for years at a serious level. genuinely skilled. but when people at a gathering say “play something” — bass isn’t really what they’re looking for lol. so he pulls out an acoustic, strums through 4 or 5 chords on songs people recognize, sings a little, and suddenly everyone thinks he’s incredible.

same person. different reaction. Lols

.. the only variable was whether they recognized the song.

and that’s actually the whole secret that musicians forget after they get good.

Non-musicians literally cannot tell the difference between truly skilled and simply competent. they get amazed when something sounds recognizable from the record. that’s the entire bar. not technique. not theory. not years of practice. just — does this sound like the thing I know.

The bass player did basic rudimentary slapping in a hard rock band in the 2000s and blew peoples minds because half the crowd had never seen slapping before unless they were into Mudvayne or Korn.

it’s both humbling and hilarious when you think about it.

The bar that non-musicians are judging music against has always been recognition and feeling — not technical execution. which is exactly why robot music works so well for casual listeners.

It sounds like something they know.

it hits a familiar emotional note.

And 80% of them literally cannot tell it came from a prompt.

Stupidly enough...

It’s that same style on the data sets they used that they stole lol.

Which is obviously familiar.

Ilya Sutskever came from a deep research background.

on September 3, 2026, Suno introduced download limits. shortly after, every current model gets retired.

official framing: “new models, in partnership with the music industry, better than anything before.”

translation: the majors sued Suno hard enough to force them to the table. what comes out of that table isn’t built for us. it’s built for the people who wanted Suno dead.

anyone who’s used “safe” licensed models from competitors already knows what this looks like. “make a rock song” — blocked, too close to Band X. “make something classical” — blocked, some estate. the creative space gets walled in and the wall is called licensing fear.

the clearest tell that this isn’t an upgrade? all current models are being shut down. you only kill what’s legally exposed. this isn’t a product update. it’s evidence removal with a UI.

this has happened before. MP3.com was where independent artists proved they didn’t need labels. UMG bought it in 2000 and turned it unrecognizable overnight. someone in the thread was the number one ranked rapper in Cleveland on MP3.com until it got taken down 💀 same playbook. different decade. different tool.

and the economics make zero sense any other way. Pro users get thousands of credits. can generate hundreds of songs. but can only download 20. you can create. you just can’t own what you created.

wtff. Shh.

. that’s a settlement condition passed directly onto users who had nothing to do with the litigation.

Suno made the deal. Suno passed the cost onto paying customers. that’s on them. but the tools letting ordinary people make music are being systematically taken apart by the same industry that spent thirty years deciding what music is allowed to be.

and that’s bigger than any single platform.

Short-form content already burned people out once.

The next wave of distraction will be real-time VR, (augmented reality)

where phones eventually get replaced by glasses that layer augmented reality directly over daily life.

Attention stops being something people spend on a screen and starts being something fully occupied around them. 🥽

A few things worth thinking about now:

1. Authenticity becomes the scarce resource
When AI content is everywhere, proof of a real human becomes the actual premium.

2. Attention will migrate, not disappear
People won’t stop consuming content — they’ll just relocate to where it feels real.

3. New mediums create new addictions
Every “brain rot” era gets replaced by a more immersive one, not a healthier one.

The businesses and creators who protect what’s genuinely human, voice, presence, imperfection, are the ones people will actively seek out once everything else starts sounding the same.

You might think it’s crazy but it’s not .

. Like Suno just woke up one day and decided to limit how much music you can take off the platform.

on November 25, 2025, Warner Music Group and Suno announced a partnership that settled the litigation between them. and buried inside Warner’s own announcement was this detail — under the new arrangement, Suno’s paying users would have monthly download limits with the option to pay for additional downloads.

the download limit didn’t appear because some users were mass exporting too much. it’s a condition that came directly out of the Suno-Warner settlement. Suno told you it was about “combating mass-export and encouraging more intentional use.” but the real origin of this policy is a deal Suno made with a record label to settle its own legal problems.

and here’s where it gets actually infuriating.

we weren’t part of that litigation. we didn’t negotiate that deal. we didn’t cause Suno’s copyright disputes. and yet Suno is now passing the cost of that settlement directly onto its paying customers while keeping the exact same subscription price.

the economics are absurd for anyone on a Pro plan. you pay for thousands of credits a month. you can generate hundreds of songs. you can burn through every credit you bought.

but you can only download 20 of them.

what are we paying those credits for EXACTLY?.... HMM.

Suno artificially separated the ability to create from the ability to actually use what you paid to create. and the community is not happy about it. one comment called it the most self-destructive decision Suno has made so far.

but jokes aside the real question being asked in that thread is an important one.

can a company sell a subscription based on certain features, let customers build entire workflows around those features, and then substantially cut them while keeping the same price?

Suno chose to make the Warner deal. Suno chose how to implement it. Suno chose to pass the consequences onto users.
