Vespasian made a decision that carried enormous symbolic weight. Rather than preserving Nero’s private lake, he ordered it drained. On that very ground, construction began, probably between AD 70 and AD 72, on a massive public amphitheater.

Land that had belonged to one emperor would now belong to the people of Rome.

An inscription from the Colosseum records that it was built ex manubiis, meaning “from the spoils.” Most historians understand this as a reference to the wealth captured during the First Jewish Revolt, including the treasures taken after the fall of Jerusalem. Officially, the building was known as the Flavian Amphitheatre. The name Colosseum became common centuries later, probably because of the enormous bronze Colossus of Nero that stood nearby.

For nearly every collector, owning an authentic architectural Colosseum sestertius remains beyond reach. The series also includes extremely rare medallions depicting the amphitheater, but these were presentation pieces rather than ordinary circulating coins. No regular Roman silver denarius depicts the Colosseum.

Can You Own a Colosseum Coin?

Probably not, at least not the famous architectural sestertius. Fortunately, collectors interested in the monument have excellent alternatives. Coins of Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian were struck during the construction, dedication, and completion of the Flavian Amphitheatre.

When most people imagine Viking treasure, they picture silver piled inside a wooden chest: coins, arm rings, jewelry, and pieces of precious metal carried home after raids, trade, and voyages across Europe.

That image isn’t entirely wrong. But Viking money was much more complicated than simply having a single “Viking coin.”

For much of the Viking Age, conventionally dated from the late 8th through the 11th centuries, Scandinavian economies used silver both as coinage and as metal valued by weight. Coins could circulate as money, but they could also be cut apart, weighed, and treated simply as silver. This creates something unusual for collectors. A collection about the Vikings doesn’t have to consist only of coins struck by Viking rulers. It can include Islamic silver carried across enormous trade networks, Anglo-Saxon pennies from Viking England, coins of York and Dublin, early Scandinavian royal issues, and the later pennies of kings such as Cnut the Great.

It can even help tell the stories of famous Vikings like Ragnar Lothbrok, Rollo, Bjorn Ironside, and Ivar the Boneless, even when no coin can securely be attributed directly to that person. The coins reveal just how enormous the Viking world really was.

So What Is a Viking Coin?

There is no single denomination called a “Viking coin.” Collectors may use the term to describe coins struck by Scandinavian rulers during the Viking Age, coins produced in territories controlled by Scandinavian rulers, foreign money that circulated through Viking trade networks, coins discovered in Viking-Age hoards, or coins cut and modified for use in a weight-based silver economy.

Those distinctions matter. An Islamic dirham struck in Central Asia wasn’t minted by Vikings. But enormous quantities of Islamic silver traveled north through trade networks connecting the Islamic world, eastern Europe, Russia, the Baltic, and Scandinavia. Likewise, an Anglo-Saxon penny could have been struck by an English king and later entered Scandinavian hands through trade, tribute, warfare, or settlement.

A coin made by Vikings, a coin used by Vikings, and a coin merely made during the Viking Age are not necessarily the same thing.

Can You Own Coins of Ragnar, Rollo, Bjorn Ironside, or Ivar the Boneless?

This is one of the most interesting questions for people entering the hobby through Viking history. Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes the better answer is: you can own a coin from their world.

Ragnar Lothbrok

Ragnar Lothbrok occupies an unusual place between history and legend. Later medieval traditions describe Ragnar as a famous Viking warrior and king and connect him with several figures who have stronger historical foundations. Separating a historical Ragnar from the Ragnar of later sagas, however, is extremely difficult. There is no securely attributable personal coinage of Ragnar Lothbrok. That doesn’t mean you can’t build a collection around the world associated with his story. Ninth-century Anglo-Saxon and Frankish coins, along with silver circulating through Scandinavian trade networks, can represent the monetary world of the period in which the Ragnar traditions are set.

Bjorn Ironside

Bjorn Ironside presents a similar challenge. Contemporary sources record Viking leaders whose names may correspond with Bjorn, while later traditions identify Bjorn Ironside as a son of Ragnar and attribute extensive campaigns to him. Connecting all of those traditions confidently to one historical individual is difficult. There is no securely attributable personal coinage of Bjorn Ironside. For collectors, the better approach is to collect coins representing the 9th-century Scandinavian and European world associated with Viking expansion.

Ivar the Boneless

Ivar the Boneless has a stronger foundation in the historical record and is associated with Viking leadership in Britain and Ireland during the 9th century and with the era of the Great Heathen Army. But collectors should still be skeptical of something casually marketed as a “coin of Ivar the Boneless.” There is no normal, universally accepted personal coinage of Ivar comparable with the royal coinage of later rulers such as Cnut the Great. Instead, Anglo-Saxon, Anglo-Viking, and Irish coinage can provide physical connections to the world in which Ivar operated.

Rollo

Rollo offers an especially interesting collecting distinction. Rollo became the Scandinavian leader associated with the foundation of Normandy after reaching an agreement with the Frankish king Charles the Simple in the early 10th century. No known coin carries Rollo’s name as issuing ruler. However, numismatists have identified early Norman coinage that was probably struck during Rollo’s reign. That means a collector should distinguish between a “coin of Rollo” and a coin minted in Normandy under Rollo. The second description can be historically meaningful even though the first would overstate the evidence. Rollo’s story eventually leads to one of the most consequential Viking legacies in European history: the Normans and, generations later, William the Conqueror and the Norman conquest of England in 1066.

Harald Bluetooth: A Viking You Can Connect Directly to Coinage

Harald Bluetooth is where the story changes. Unlike Ragnar or Bjorn, Harald was a historical king of Denmark whose reign is directly connected with surviving coinage. Early Danish silver pennies attributed to Harald demonstrate an important transformation taking place within Scandinavia. Coinage wasn’t simply useful money. It was becoming a symbol of royal authority. A king who controlled coin production could place his authority into the hands of the people who used it.

Harald’s reign therefore helps bridge two different Viking monetary worlds: the older economy in which foreign silver and bullion circulated widely, and the emerging Scandinavian kingdoms that increasingly issued their own money.

Before Viking Kings Minted Their Own Coinage, Silver Was Money

One of the most important things to understand about Viking economics is that silver itself could function as money. Transactions did not always depend on the denomination or issuing authority of a coin. Silver could be weighed. Coins could be cut. Arm rings could be broken into pieces. Fragments of jewelry and ingots could be exchanged according to their weight and quality. These pieces of cut precious metal are commonly described as hacksilver.

This helps explain why Viking-Age hoards can look so unusual to modern collectors. Instead of containing only complete coins, they may contain whole coins, fragments, jewelry, ingots, and chopped silver. To us, cutting a medieval silver coin seems destructive. To someone using silver by weight, it could simply make change.

The Islamic Dirham: One of the Great Coins of the Viking World

One of the most fascinating coins associated with Viking history wasn’t Scandinavian at all. It was the Islamic silver dirham. During the 9th and 10th centuries, enormous quantities of Islamic silver traveled northward through eastern European trade routes. Coins struck throughout the Islamic world, including mints far into Central Asia, could eventually reach Russia, the Baltic, and Scandinavia.

Scandinavian traders traveled along major river systems connecting the Baltic with the Black Sea and Caspian regions. Through these networks, Islamic silver entered northern Europe in extraordinary quantities. Islamic dirhams have been discovered in Viking-Age hoards throughout Scandinavia. Some survive whole. Others were deliberately cut into pieces.

One coin can tell two histories: the civilization that minted it, and the Viking trade network that carried it north.

For collectors, these coins provide a remarkable reminder that the Viking world was not isolated. A silver coin covered in Arabic inscriptions could travel thousands of miles before entering a Scandinavian economy.

Why Were Viking-Age Coins Cut?

Collectors occasionally encounter Viking-associated coins that have been cut into halves, quarters, or irregular fragments. That does not necessarily mean the coin was accidentally damaged. In an economy where silver could be valued by weight, cutting a coin created a smaller amount of spendable silver. A merchant could weigh the fragment just as another piece of silver might be weighed. From a modern collecting perspective, a cut coin may look less desirable than a complete example. Historically, however, the cut can actually be part of the story. It may be evidence of the bullion economy in which that silver participated.

Were Vikings Using Ancient Roman Coins?

Roman coins have been found throughout northern Europe, but collectors should be cautious about assuming every ancient coin discovered in Scandinavia remained in normal monetary circulation during the Viking Age. Is there archaeological evidence connecting the type to Viking trade? Or was it merely produced during the same century? A knowledgeable seller should be able to distinguish between a coin made under Viking authority, a coin demonstrably associated with the Viking economy, and a coin that merely dates from the Viking Age. Those are not always the same thing.

Are Viking Coins Faked?

Anything rare, valuable, and historically famous can attract forgery. Early Scandinavian royal coins, Anglo-Viking issues, and other desirable medieval silver deserve careful authentication. Collectors should consider weight and diameter, metal, style, letter forms, die characteristics, surface appearance, provenance, and comparison with established examples. Be particularly skeptical of spectacular “Viking coins” offered cheaply through marketplaces where sellers provide little attribution or provenance. It is better to own a modest, correctly identified coin than a dramatic object with a questionable story attached to it.

Collecting Guide Alexander the Great Kinzer Coins

Few names in ancient history carry the weight of Alexander the Great.

Alexander III became king of Macedon in 336 BC. By the time he died in Babylon in 323 BC at only 32 years old, he had destroyed the Achaemenid Persian Empire and created a realm stretching from Greece and Egypt deep into Asia. His empire did not survive intact. His coinage did. In fact, Alexander’s monetary legacy survived him for generations.

Today you can own a silver tetradrachm carrying Alexander’s name. You can own a gold stater issued in his name. You can own drachms from numerous mints associated with his monetary system. And you can own genuine ancient coins bearing Alexander’s name and types that were struck long after Alexander himself was dead. That creates one of the most important questions in ancient coin collecting: what does a coin of Alexander the Great actually mean? The answer is more complicated, and much more interesting, than simply finding the name Alexander on a coin.

What Coins Did Alexander the Great Issue?

Alexander’s major royal precious-metal coinage included gold staters, silver tetradrachms, and silver drachms. Bronze coinage was also issued in a variety of types. The most famous Alexander silver design became one of the most successful coin types of the ancient world: on the obverse, Herakles wearing the skin of the Nemean lion; on the reverse, Zeus seated on a throne, holding an eagle and sceptre; and the legend ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, meaning “of Alexander.”

It looks straightforward. It isn’t. Because Alexander’s name and these designs continued to appear on coins for generations after his death.

Is That Alexander on the Front of the Tetradrachm?

Usually, no. This is probably the single most important misconception for a beginning Alexander collector to understand. The youthful head wearing the lion skin on the standard Alexander tetradrachm is conventionally and correctly identified as Herakles. The lion skin is that of the Nemean Lion, killed by Herakles during the first of his famous Labors. Alexander’s Argead dynasty claimed descent from Herakles, making the hero an appropriate dynastic symbol.

There has been scholarly discussion about whether the features of Herakles on some dies may have been influenced by Alexander’s appearance. But collectors should not simply describe the standard type as “Alexander the Great wearing a lion skin.” The correct identification is Herakles wearing the lion skin. That distinction becomes particularly important because there are other ancient coins that really do depict Alexander.

Which Ancient Coins Actually Show Alexander’s Face?

Some of the clearest portraits of Alexander appeared after his death. His successors understood the political power of his image. Two successor rulers are especially important.

Ptolemy I

Ptolemy was one of Alexander’s generals and eventually established his own dynasty in Egypt. Early Ptolemaic coinage used images of Alexander with divine attributes, including issues portraying him wearing an elephant scalp and other symbols connecting him with conquest and divinity.

Lysimachos

Lysimachos was another of Alexander’s successors. His later silver and gold coinage carries one of the most famous ancient portraits of Alexander. Alexander appears deified, most notably with the horn of Zeus-Ammon. These coins were not struck during Alexander’s lifetime. But if your collecting goal is specifically “I want an ancient coin showing the face of Alexander the Great,” a Lysimachos tetradrachm is one of the clearest and most famous choices. This gives collectors an important distinction: an Alexander lifetime tetradrachm usually shows Herakles, not Alexander, while later successor coinage may actually depict Alexander himself.

The Alexander Tetradrachm

For most collectors, the silver tetradrachm is the quintessential Alexander coin. Alexander’s major silver coinage followed the Attic weight standard. A full-weight tetradrachm was theoretically around 17.2 grams, though surviving examples naturally vary somewhat because of minting tolerances, wear, corrosion, and other factors.

On the obverse, Herakles faces right wearing the Nemean lion skin, the lion’s scalp covering his head while portions of the skin are visible around his neck. On the reverse, Zeus sits on a throne, usually facing left, holding an eagle in his extended right hand and a sceptre in his left. Alexander’s name appears beside him. But numerous other symbols, letters, and monograms may also appear. Those tiny details can be extremely important. They may help tell us where the coin was struck, which issue it belongs to, and approximately when it was produced.

Why Did Alexander Use Herakles?

Herakles was not simply decorative mythology. The Macedonian Argead dynasty claimed descent from the hero, which gave Herakles direct dynastic significance. Herakles was also one of the greatest heroic figures in Greek mythology, a mortal who completed seemingly impossible tasks and ultimately achieved divine status. For the royal coinage of a Macedonian king embarking on unprecedented conquest, the symbolism was powerful. The coin did not need to show Alexander’s literal face to communicate something about his dynasty and royal identity.

Why Zeus on the Reverse?

Zeus was king of the Olympian gods. On Alexander’s silver coinage he appears enthroned, holding the eagle and sceptre. The combination of Herakles and Zeus therefore created an extraordinarily powerful royal type: Herakles for heroic and dynastic ancestry, Zeus for supreme divine authority, and ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ for Alexander’s name. It became one of the most recognizable monetary designs of the Hellenistic world.

Alexander’s Gold Stater and Silver Drachms

Alexander’s principal gold coin used a different design: on the obverse, Athena wearing a crested Corinthian helmet; on the reverse, Nike, goddess of Victory, standing and holding a wreath and stylis; with the legend ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ. Alexander’s gold staters were struck to an Attic standard of approximately 8.6 grams. The imagery was particularly appropriate for a conquering king. Athena was associated with warfare and wisdom, and Nike embodied victory. Alexander spent almost his entire adult reign at war, so his principal gold coin paired two exceptionally powerful images: Athena and Victory.

The silver drachm offers another important way to collect Alexander. The standard drachm generally uses the same broad Herakles and Zeus design as the tetradrachm, but on a smaller coin. Under the Attic system, one tetradrachm equals four drachms, and the theoretical drachm weight was approximately 4.3 grams. Drachms became especially important at a number of mints in Asia Minor. For collectors, they can sometimes provide a less expensive route into Alexander’s royal silver coinage, but they also form a sophisticated collecting field of their own, with numerous mints, symbols, and issues.

Did Alexander Issue Bronze Coins?

Yes. Alexander’s monetary world was not limited to spectacular gold and silver; a substantial bronze coinage also existed. Collectors encounter several different bronze types featuring combinations of imagery such as Herakles, Zeus, an eagle, a club, a bow and bowcase, and various Macedonian symbols and control marks. The bronze system is more complicated than the great silver Herakles/Zeus series. The exact ancient names and tariff relationships of many bronze denominations are uncertain. For that reason, collectors should be cautious about assigning precise ancient denomination names to every Alexander bronze unless the attribution is well supported. Bronzes can nevertheless be an excellent entry point for collectors who want a genuine coin associated with Alexander’s monetary system without immediately buying a tetradrachm or gold stater.

What Does ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Mean?

One of the easiest ways to recognize Alexander’s major coinage is the inscription ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ. It is the genitive form of Alexandros and means essentially “of Alexander.” Some issues also use ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, meaning “of King Alexander.” That inscription is extremely useful. But it does not answer one of the most important questions: was the coin struck while Alexander was alive? ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ does not automatically mean lifetime Alexander.

Lifetime vs. Posthumous Alexander Coins

Alexander died in 323 BC. His coinage did not stop. Alexander types continued to be produced after his death because they had become widely recognized and useful currency. That means a genuine ancient tetradrachm bearing Alexander’s name could have been struck during his lifetime, or shortly after his death, or decades later, or, in some areas, well over a century later. These are all genuine ancient coins. But they are not all lifetime issues. That distinction matters enormously to collectors.

Why Did Alexander’s Coins Continue After His Death?

Alexander’s conquests had created an enormous new monetary environment. Large quantities of precious metal captured from the Persian Empire were monetized, and production of Alexander’s royal types expanded through an increasingly wide network of mints. After Alexander died, his successors inherited a fragmented empire, but they also inherited a currency that soldiers, merchants, and communities across a vast territory already recognized. Continuing Alexander’s types offered major advantages. The coins were familiar. They were produced on a widely understood weight standard. They were acceptable across broad regions. And Alexander’s name carried enormous prestige. His kingdom fractured. His currency survived it.

How Long Were Alexander Coins Minted?

Much longer than many beginning collectors realize. Large-scale posthumous production began immediately after Alexander’s death and continued through the Successor period. Some cities and kingdoms continued producing Alexander-type tetradrachms far later. By the Hellenistic period, the design had become something larger than one king’s personal currency. It had become an international monetary type. Eventually even peoples outside the original Macedonian kingdom imitated Alexander’s Herakles and Zeus designs. This produced a remarkable family tree: Alexander royal issues, then early posthumous Alexanders, then Successor and civic Alexanders, then regional issues, and finally ancient imitations. A coin can therefore be a completely genuine ancient Alexander-type tetradrachm without having been struck during Alexander’s lifetime.

How Can You Tell Whether an Alexander Coin Is Lifetime?

There is no universal visual shortcut. This point is critical. You may encounter claims online such as “Zeus’s legs are positioned this way, therefore the coin is lifetime,” or “this style of throne proves Alexander was alive when it was struck.” Features such as Zeus’s posture, throne style, lettering, and artistic style can be useful within particular mint sequences. But they are not universal dating tests for the entire Alexander series.

Reliable dating requires studying the complete issue. That can involve mint attribution, symbols, monograms, control marks, style, die studies, hoard evidence, archaeological evidence, historical mint activity, and modern numismatic research. Some mints operated during Alexander’s lifetime. Others began producing Alexander types only after his death. And some mints produced both lifetime and posthumous issues. The question is therefore not simply “what does the coin look like?” It is “which exact issue is this?”

Three Useful Dating Categories

Collectors often want every Alexander coin placed into one of two boxes, lifetime or posthumous. Reality can be more complicated. A better approach is to recognize three categories.

How to Date an Alexander Coin

• Definite lifetime. The issue is securely dated within Alexander’s reign, 336 to 323 BC.

• Possible lifetime or transitional. The accepted date range crosses Alexander’s death. For example, an issue dated 325 to 320 BC began while Alexander was alive but continued after he died. Without additional evidence, an individual specimen cannot automatically be guaranteed as lifetime.

• Posthumous. The issue is securely dated after 323 BC.

This distinction prevents collectors and dealers from claiming more certainty than the evidence allows.

What Does “Lifetime Issue” Actually Mean?

A genuine lifetime issue means that the particular mint and issue is dated to the period when Alexander was alive and reigning. It does not mean Alexander personally touched the coin. It does not mean the coin traveled with his army. It does not mean the coin paid a soldier at Gaugamela. Those possibilities may be romantic. They are normally impossible to prove. What a secure lifetime attribution can tell us is still extraordinary: the coin was struck while Alexander the Great was alive.

Alexander’s Network of Mints

Alexander’s coinage eventually became enormous in scale. As he conquered the Persian Empire, production expanded across a growing network of mints, often making use of existing minting centers. Alexander types were ultimately produced across regions including Macedonia, Thrace, Asia Minor, Phoenicia, Syria, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and territories farther east. After Alexander’s death, many mints continued producing coins in his name and types. This is why two tetradrachms that look almost identical can have completely different histories. One may have been struck in Macedonia during Alexander’s reign. Another might have been struck in Phoenicia, another in Mesopotamia, another generations later in Asia Minor. The large design tells you the Alexander type. The small details often tell you the rest of the story.

How Do You Identify an Alexander Mint?

Look carefully around Zeus on the reverse. Depending on the issue, you may find letters, monograms, objects, symbols, and control marks. They can appear beneath Zeus’s throne, in the left field, below or beside the throne, beside the legend, or elsewhere in the reverse field. To a beginner they may look like decoration. They often are not. They can help identify mint, issue, production sequence, and chronology. A helmet. A torch. A bee. A wreath. A monogram. A small letter combination. Something occupying only a few millimeters of the coin can completely change its attribution. That is one reason Alexander coinage becomes much deeper the more you study it.

What Is a Price Number?

Alexander collectors constantly encounter descriptions such as Price 14, Price 3599, or Price 3250. This does not refer to the monetary price of the coin. It refers to numismatist Martin Jessop Price and his monumental 1991 reference, The Coinage in the Name of Alexander the Great and Philip Arrhidaeus. Price organized thousands of Alexander and Philip III issues by their attributed mints, types, symbols, and monograms. A Price number therefore identifies a cataloged issue or variety. It does not simply function as a date code. The process is more like: identify the coin, find the appropriate Price attribution, determine the attributed mint and issue, consult the chronology for that issue, and then determine whether it is lifetime, transitional, or posthumous.

Does Price Always Have the Final Answer?

No. Price’s work remains foundational, but ancient numismatics did not stop in 1991. Since publication, new hoards have appeared, new varieties have been identified, die studies have expanded, mint attributions have been reconsidered, and chronologies have been refined. A Price number remains extremely useful. But collectors should also consult more recent specialized research when dealing with difficult or important issues. Numismatics is an active field, and attributions can change as evidence improves.

The Alexander Coin That Isn’t Alexander

Philip III Arrhidaeus

There is another complication collectors should know. After Alexander’s death, his half-brother Philip III Arrhidaeus became one of the nominal kings of the Macedonian empire. Coins were issued in Philip’s name using designs closely related to Alexander’s. A silver coin may therefore look immediately like an Alexander tetradrachm, with Herakles and Zeus, but the legend may name ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ, meaning “of Philip.” This is a good reminder: never identify an ancient coin solely from the picture. Read the inscription. Two coins with nearly identical designs can belong to different royal authorities.

Official Alexander or Ancient Imitation?

Alexander’s designs became so widespread that other peoples copied them. Ancient imitations of Alexander tetradrachms were produced in several regions. Celtic and other imitative issues can transform the familiar Herakles and Zeus designs into increasingly stylized forms. That creates another important distinction. An Alexander-looking coin might be an official lifetime Alexander issue, an official posthumous issue in Alexander’s name, a Successor or civic issue continuing Alexander’s types, an ancient imitation of Alexander’s coinage, or a modern forgery. Those categories are not interchangeable. And importantly, ancient imitation does not mean modern fake. An ancient imitation is itself a genuine ancient coin and can be an important collecting field.

Is a Posthumous Alexander Coin Less Real?

Absolutely not. A posthumous Alexander tetradrachm is still a genuine ancient coin. It may still be more than 2,200 years old. It may have circulated in the Hellenistic kingdoms created by Alexander’s conquests. It may have been struck by a city that deliberately chose Alexander’s types because people recognized and trusted them. What it is not is a coin struck while Alexander was alive. That distinction should be stated clearly without treating posthumous coins as inferior. In some cases, an exceptional posthumous issue can be far more valuable than an ordinary lifetime coin.

Are Lifetime Alexander Coins More Valuable?

Often they command a premium. Collectors naturally value the direct chronological connection with Alexander. But lifetime status is only one factor. Value can also depend on denomination, mint, rarity, condition, artistic style, centering, strike, surfaces, symbols, provenance, historical significance, and collector demand. A poorly preserved lifetime tetradrachm does not automatically outrank a spectacular posthumous rarity. Buy the coin, not simply the word lifetime.

How Many Alexander Coins Were Made?

No ancient mint records survive giving us a definitive production total. Modern scholars can, however, use surviving dies and other evidence to estimate the scale of production. Those studies suggest that Alexander and the early posthumous authorities produced tens of millions of silver coins, along with enormous quantities of gold and bronze. These are scholarly estimates, not exact surviving mint totals. But the basic conclusion is secure: Alexander’s coinage was produced on an extraordinary scale. That helps explain something that initially surprises new collectors. A genuine coin associated with one of history’s most famous conquerors does not necessarily have to be extremely rare. Alexander’s coins were money. They were made to circulate. And enormous quantities were required.

Can You Collect Alexander’s Conquests Through Coins?

Yes, and this is one of the most interesting ways to build an Alexander collection. Instead of buying twenty tetradrachms simply because they all say Alexander, build the collection geographically. A coin from Macedonia, Alexander’s homeland. A coin from a mint in Asia Minor incorporated into the Macedonian world during the conquest of Persia. A coin from Phoenicia after Alexander’s campaigns. A coin connected with Egypt, where Alexander founded Alexandria. A coin from Mesopotamia, the former heartland of Achaemenid power. And a later Alexander type from the eastern Hellenistic world, demonstrating how far his monetary influence traveled. Now the collection becomes a map, each coin representing a different part of the world transformed by Alexander’s campaigns.

What Should a Beginner Buy?

There is no single correct Alexander coin. It depends on what you want from the collection.

How to Buy an Alexander Coin Safely

Alexander coins are popular, which means they have also been forged for a very long time. When buying one, especially an expensive silver tetradrachm or gold stater, consider the attribution (does the seller identify the mint, approximate date, and reference?), the lifetime claim (if advertised as lifetime, is the attribution actually dated before 323 BC?), the weight and diameter (reasonable for the issue?), and the surfaces (any evidence of casting, modern tooling, or artificial smoothing?). Style varies enormously because Alexander coinage was struck at many mints, so strange style alone does not prove a coin is fake, but important coins deserve knowledgeable examination. Older documented provenance can add confidence, although its absence does not automatically make a coin suspicious. Above all, buy from an established ancient-coin dealer or reputable auction house that guarantees authenticity. The more expensive the coin, the more important these considerations become.

Roman Coins Tell a Story

Unlike many modern coins, Roman coins weren’t designed simply to show a ruler’s portrait. They also communicated the emperor’s titles, honors, authority, and political message.

The legends were an important part of that message. Every abbreviation had a purpose.

Start With the Portrait

The portrait tells you whose coin you’re holding. Even if you can’t read every letter, recognizing the portrait gives you a place to start. Remember that not every Roman coin depicts an emperor. Many feature empresses, Caesars, heirs to the throne, or other members of the imperial family.

Did the Romans Know What Year It Was?

Then a young man named Octavian, who would soon become Augustus, recognized something remarkable. Every Roman handled coins. Why Coins Were the Perfect Propaganda Tool

In 42 BC, the Roman Senate officially declared Julius Caesar a god, giving him the title Divus Julius (”the Divine Julius”). As Caesar’s adopted son and legal heir, Octavian could now call himself Divi Filius, “Son of the Divine One.” That title appeared prominently on countless early coins struck in his name.

This was an extraordinary piece of political messaging. Augustus wasn’t claiming to be a god himself. The good news is that you don’t have to memorize hundreds of abbreviations. Once you understand a few common patterns, Roman coins become surprisingly readable.

Learning to decode these legends is one of the biggest steps from simply owning an ancient coin to truly understanding it.

Roman Coins Tell a Story

Unlike many modern coins, Roman coins weren’t designed simply to show a ruler’s portrait. They also communicated the emperor’s titles, honors, authority, and political message.

The legends were an important part of that message. Every abbreviation had a purpose.

Start With the Portrait

The portrait tells you whose coin you’re holding. Even if you can’t read every letter, recognizing the portrait gives you a place to start. Remember that not every Roman coin depicts an emperor. Many feature empresses, Caesars, heirs to the throne, or other members of the imperial family.

Once you’ve identified the portrait, begin reading the surrounding legend. Most Roman legends are intended to be read clockwise, although worn or off-center coins can make this difficult. Don’t worry if some letters are missing. Experienced collectors identify coins from incomplete legends every day.

Don’t Try to Read Every Letter

The Rise of an Old Statesman
