Every August, my inbox gets… very specific (and I LOVE it!).

Not “What does the research say about learning environments?”

But things like…

“I have 32 children and approximately six inches of available floor space - help!”

“My art room is chaotic. What do I do?”

“Wait. When when you said 60% neutral, did you mean WHITE?”

And honestly, these are my favorite types of questions to answer because this is where all of the research and theory and beautiful photographs of thoughtfully-designed learning environments have to collide with actual life.

This is the whole reason there is a “Research Made Reasonable” section in every one of my posts. Research and applying research in an actual classroom are two very, very different things:

• Your room might have fluorescent lights you didn’t choose

• Your cabinets might be purple (yes, I’ve seen it)

• You have 32 children in a room that’s made for 25 (yes, I’ve lived it)

• The furniture was purchased in 2007 and apparently must remain in the building until approximately 2087 (tell me I’m wrong)

My work sits in the intersection of what should be and what actually can be in a real space.

Over the past several weeks, I’ve saved some of the questions you’ve sent me while setting up classrooms and beginning a new school year. So, instead of moving on to our regularly scheduled Field Notes this week, I thought we might do something different.

Welcome to Ask Kirsten: Back-to-School Edition.

I’m answering six of your real questions, and showing you what I would look at first.

First of all, I believe you. Sometimes it’s not that our classrooms are too small, it’s that our population grows too big. This is especially true in public schools where there is no ability to cap class size.

One thing I want to acknowledge is that sometimes classroom-design advice unintentionally communicates that every problem can be solved if the teacher is just creative enough. That’s not true.

Frustration over class size is not teacher failure or simply a “complaint” about the job; it is a legitimate issue that teachers face. However, systemic change is slow and it doesn’t help us today, so let's focus on the problem we can solve in front of us.

For this specific problem, I’d like to begin with the opposite question: What can leave?

When square footage is your greatest constraint, you have to make every single thing in that room serve a purpose. I often tell my playroom clients, you have to make things “earn their place in your space.”

If something serves a function, good. If it serves two functions, even better. We are looking for furniture and materials that can be used multiple times a day for multiple functions. Think writable surfaces, multi-use manipulatives, and furniture that can be reconfigured throughout the day.

Next, look at circulation. Can 32 children get from the door to their seats easily? Can they reach their most-used materials in the least-disruptive way possible? Are there ways you can cut down on unnecessary traffic across the room? Where do backpacks, coats, and personal belongings go? Is there ANY furniture occupying precious floor space that could be replaced with something that has a smaller footprint or, better yet, removed entirely? In a tight space, less is more.

Then, I’d go vertical. How can you utilize walls, cabinet doors, magnetic surfaces, hooks, or hanging systems? I’m always so inspired by the design of tight spaces: IKEA showrooms, ship cabins, dorm rooms. Even though these won’t translate to your space directly, simply looking through images of how space is maximized in tight spaces will inspire your brain to think differently about the space you have.

Finally, be realistic about what the room can do. Yes, research says that the best classroom library has 20 books per child, covers facing forward, and soft seating. But if that’s not the world you’re living in with your classroom, ask yourself how/what you need to trim to get as close to that as possible while still living in reality. Research made reasonable.

Teachers are decision makers. Think about how you can’t possibly teach every lesson at the length that the curriculum company suggests. Your classroom is the same way.

Ooooh. I love this one!

And the first thing I’ll tell you might sound strange:

I don’t necessarily want your art room to be calm. (at least not all the time)

16 children making art should create some energy. They’re moving, talking, experimenting, retrieving materials, changing their minds, making messes. We don’t want to design the life out of a creative space in the pursuit of “calm.”

At the same time, I want you to love your job! And, as teachers, we can’t be surrounded by chaos all the time. It’s simply not sustainable for our nervous systems. So let’s focus on creating a space that is developmentally-appropriate while still giving you the order and calmness that the human brain craves.

First of all, I want to know whether the energy is productive or frictional, because those are different.

I’d walk the room and look for the moments where energy turns into friction:

• Are children crossing the room repeatedly for materials?

• Do five students converge in the same supply area?

• Can they tell what they’re allowed to use independently?

• Are high-use materials located closest to the places where they’re actually used?

• Is every single material visible at once?

• Where does wet work go?

• Where does finished work go?

• What happens during cleanup?

If you haven’t read the Every Classroom Has a Traffic Pattern, that’s a great place to start with an exercise like this.

Next, I’d look at sensory load, particularly visual complexity and noise.

Research on classroom visual environments has found that highly decorated environments can compete for children’s attention. That doesn’t mean that beige walls and empty shelves are the answer, especially in an art room! It means that visual information needs hierarchy.

One mistake that I often see in art rooms is the amount of decor on the walls.

Let the children’s art be the interesting thing. Create really beautiful, intentional displays of their artwork. And remember multifunctional from the first question? Student displays serve two purposes: decorating the space and building confidence and pride in your students. Minimize and rotate anchor charts, famous artist work, and examples. This seems counterintuitive, but students are actually more likely to focus on those things if there are less of them and they are switched out frequently.

Store paints, markers, etc. that create visual clutter.

Similar to a toy rotation, introduce an art medium rotation so it doesn’t feel like all things are available at all times. Opaque bins that are easy for you to switch out. Students should only have access to what they are actively working with. Everything else is just adding to the chaos.

Ok, YES. Fair question :)

This is where I want to clarify something from Instagram.

When I talk about a 60/30/10 approach to color, I’m giving you a design lens, not a mathematical formula requiring you to walk around your room and count it explicitly.

Natural also does not necessarily mean white or beige…

Flooring can function as a neutral. So can natural wood or large stretches of cabinetry, walls, or even windows. By the time you get down to the surfaces you can actually control if your classroom, you’ve likely already hit your neutral quota. Just be sure to leave some negative space so that children’s eyes (and yours!) have somewhere to rest.

The percentages are about the overall visual weight of the room. And this is particularly important in children’s environments because children themeslves bring enormous visual into a space!

Their books are colorful, their backpacks and artwork and legos are colorful. Oftentimes, even their clothing is colorful, so take into account all that they will bring into your space as you’re designing it.

Harness it. Seriously!

Before buying another lamp or changing another paint color, look at what your windows are already giving you.

Natural light has been studied in relation to academic performance, alertness, circadian regulation, wellbeing, eye health, and overall mood. In every single one of these categories, it affects people positively.

But keep in mind that a window isn’t useful simply because it exists. Is it covered by furniture? Are the blinds closed? Does direct afternoon sun make one child’s desk miserable? Is the brightest part of the room being used for something that doesn’t benefit anyone? This is where designing from a photograph and designing from lived experience overlap - this is why I want to teach you design skills; so that you can design for the real spaces you’re living in!

So, we’re not just asking, Does this room have good natural light? We’re asking, What happens to the light in this room over the course of an actual day?

Watch it at 8:00, at 12:00, at 2:30… the room changes and your design should change with it.

My first reaction? I like the principal of this idea more than I like trying to make every classroom have meandering paths.

One strong belief I have is that environments can make appropriate behavior easier. A child should be able to look around a classroom and understand something about what is possible there. For example, “I can read here,” “These materials are available to me,” “I know where this work goes when I’m finished.”

That environmental legibility, and I love it! But, at the same time, I don’t want a classroom to be so rigid that it feels sterile. The special thing about IKEA is that the path creates a feeling of discovery… the environment should provide cues without diluting joy and wonder.

YES. And homes, and preschools, and libraries, and museums… and honestly anywhere we’re asking the human brain to learn, participate, regulate themselves, find things, move through space, or understand what they’re supposed to do. The principles don’t disappear as children get older. However, the expression of them changes.

A 5-year-old might need a photograph of a toy on a bin, whereas a 13-year-old probably doesn’t. However, that 13-year-old still benefits from knowing where the materials live without asking a teacher.

A kindergartener needs spaces that communicate, you can do this yourself. A middl schooler needs spaces that communicate you belong here, your work matters, and you have some agency over how you learn.

And this is one reason I’ve slowly stopped thinking of my work as “classroom design.” I’m actually interested in something much bigger:

Think Like a Designer

Here’s what I want you to try this week:

1. Choose one moment of friction: It could be the way kids crowd around the pencil sharpener, a time in the day when kids wander around asking where finished work goes, that cleanup takes 11 minutes when it should take 2, your child leaves their toys laying across the playroom floor and then bounces to play in a cleaner space, students ask for permission to use materials you’ve already told them they can use… you see where I’m going with this!

2. Then run it through the Environment Review:

   1. LOOK - what is actually happening?

   2. NOTICE - where does the friction occur?

   3. INTERPRET - what is the environment currently asking people to do?

   4. PRIORITIZE - what is the smallest environmental change you can test first?

3. Then change one thing (not 12!). These small tweaks are how designers learn from a space.

Keep the questions coming.

I mean that. These are some of my favorite conversations to have, and your questions often make me notice something I want to explore more deeply here.

A few nights ago, my sweet husband and I were sitting on our front porch when he asked me what time our kids’ Back-to-School Night started.

And I said, “I literally have no idea.”

He was, for good reason, completely puzzled by this response considering I work at the school our children attend. But a) my husband has a brain that easily holds information (he calls it the “steel trap”). However, I was not blessed with a steel trap, and therefore have absolutely no idea what time Back-to-School Night is.

I knew it was coming. I knew we were going. I knew everything that needed to happen around it.

But whether it started at 6:00 or 6:30?

No clue.

Because that information does not live in my brain; it lives on the big Emily Ley calendar hanging in our kitchen. And that is very intentional.

After sixteen years in education (and now raising two school-aged children with another educator) I have become increasingly protective of what I ask my brain to hold.

I want to remember that one of my children has been excited to show me something he built. I want to remember the name of the new mom I met at school. I want to remember that a friend has a special anniversary coming up, or that one of my boys mentioned something three days ago that I need to circle back and ask him about.

I do not particularly care to remember that Back-to-School Night is from 6:00–7:30 on a Tuesday, August 25.

After Tuesday, August 25, that information is completely useless.

So I let the environment remember it for me.

And y’all, this is one of my favorite teacher tricks to bring home!

I call it the Command Center

When I was teaching, my classroom had one place where almost everything my students and I needed to know lived.

It was our single source of truth.

• The daily schedule was there.

• A clock and timer were there.

• Our workshop groups and rotations were there.

• If an OT, speech therapist, tutor, or reading specialist was coming to pull a child that day, that information was there too.

When I taught very young children, I would even put up the adult’s photograph so they knew when to expect an unfamiliar coming into the room.

Because imagine being five. You’re working happily at a table and suddenly an adult you don’t really know appears in your classroom and says your name. The teacher knows it’s Miss Ford from Speech. The child may simply be thinking, Who is this person and why am I leaving with her? A tiny photograph beside the schedule made the day more predictable before the interruption ever happened.

I also used the Command Center for directions during transitions. If I needed children to:

1. Put away their backpacks.

2. Get out their homework folders.

3. Choose a center.

I said those directions.

But I also posted them. Cute, simple little graphic cards next to 1, 2, 3 up on the board. If a child completed one thing but needed help remembering steps 2 and 3, they just looked at the board.

(I recently made a Think Like a Designer reel about my classroom’s Command Center.

Because we all know how well saying something one time to twenty-five children works. (Bless us.) Instead of repeating myself over and over, I could point. The information existed somewhere besides me, which freed me up to hear students’ stories from the night before, comfort them when their parents were traveling, and actually remember to take attendance (most days).

I now know that distinction matters more than I realized at the time:

The best systems don’t help you remember more. They give you less to remember.

There is actually research behind this

Researchers have a name for what we’re doing when we put something on a calendar, set a reminder, write a list, or strategically place something where we’ll see it later: cognitive offloading.

Rather than asking our brains to retain every intention internally, we transfer some of that work into the environment.

And it works.

A major review of research on what scientists call intention offloading found that external reminders can substantially improve our ability to follow through on things we intend to do. The authors describe calendars, diaries, alerts, and even objects deliberately placed in our path as ways we store intentions in the physical world rather than solely in our minds.

There’s developmental research here too. Children are still developing the ability to remember that something needs to happen later, and research on prospective memory has found that external reminders, particularly visual ones, can support that developing capacity.

Visual activity schedules have been studied especially extensively for children with autism, where research has found benefits for following schedules, independent transitions, and other appropriate behaviors. However, a visual schedule is something that helps all children (and adults) in the room because it answers the question: what comes next?

The larger principle is beautifully simple:

Human beings use environments to help us think.

Adults do this constantly.

• We put a meeting on Outlook.

• We set an alarm.

• We leave the library book beside the front door.

• We put the grocery list on the refrigerator.

• We use GPS even when we basically know where we’re going because we’d rather let the little blue line remember which exit we’re supposed to take.

And then sometimes we turn around and expect a six-year-old to remember twelve verbal instructions and that our morning routine is different every Tuesday.

Why?

Let the room help.

The same system works at home

Our home Command Center is not particularly complicated.

There’s a large wall calendar and three clips beside it. The clips hold the things we actually need for reference: school calendars, football schedules, rotation schedules, invitations or flyers that contain information we still need.

Anything that requires an action gets dealt with as quickly as possible.

A permission slip?

I sign it and put it straight back in the folder.

An invitation?

RSVP, add the party to the calendar, and then decide whether I actually need the paper anymore.

A football schedule?

The dates go onto the calendar, and the schedule stays clipped nearby if it contains details we’ll need later.

I’m a big believer in touching something once whenever possible. If it takes two minutes to deal with now, I would much rather do that than to open a new tab in my brain that says, remember to deal with this later.

Because that’s how a three-inch piece of paper somehow becomes weighs on your brain for six days. But the calendar holds more than appointments

This is the part that has probably helped me most as a working parent. At the beginning of the school year, I reverse-engineer as much of the year as I reasonably can:

• Teacher birthdays.

• Family photos.

• Order Christmas cards.

• Teacher gifts.

• Valentines.

• School events.

• Football games.

• Trips.

• Days off.

Anything that has the potential to become one of those OH MY GOODNESS, THAT’S TOMORROW?! moments gets moved out of my brain and into the environment.

Because so much of the mental load of parenting isn’t doing the thing.

It’s remembering that the thing is coming.

And when the environment holds that information, I can use my brain for something else.

A 2025 review in Nature Reviews Psychology describes cognitive offloading as using physical actions (like writing something down) to reduce internal memory demands. Research generally finds performance benefits, although researchers also point out that offloading can have tradeoffs depending on what we’re trying to learn and remember, which is an important distinction. Remember people. Offload logistics.

I’m not trying to outsource everything I know. I’m outsourcing temporary logistics.

• Tuesday at 5:00.

• Bring sneakers Thursday.

• Cash has football Saturday morning.

• Jack needs his library book tomorrow.

Those facts need to be available.

They do not need to become part of my long-term memory.

Logistics are temporary. Relationships aren’t.

I’d rather save the good brain space for people I know and love :)

A Command Center also teaches expectations

This is another classroom practice I’ve successfully carried into our home. In my classroom, I kept our rules visible. We only had five rules and they were broad enough to cover almost anything that might happen during a school year.

The expectations were not something I invented every time behavior went sideways. They were already there, posted where children could see them. They knew the rules, the why behind them, and the consequences. When they broke a rule, they weren’t surprised by the consequence because it was there for them to see all day every day.

As a mom, I’ve realized that children benefit from that same clarity at home. So, beside our dining table, we have our expectations for dinner.

• Stay in your seat.

• One person talks at a time.

• Ask to be excused when you’re finished.

None of it’s groundbreaking, but the fact that those expectations exist outside of me changes the interaction. Instead of me spending my entire dinner saying, “stay in your seat,” “wait for your brother to finish his story,” or (my personal favorite) “where are you going? Dinner’s not over yet.” the expectation was established before anyone sat down. I can point back to something we’ve already agreed upon, talked about, and modeled.

Again: the environment carries some of the work.

And I think this is where the Command Center becomes more than an organization system.

It becomes a tool for independence.

Let’s walk through it together…

Here’s where I want you to resist Pinterest for just a minute. Please don’t begin by ordering matching acrylic wall calendars, label makers, wooden file boxes, and six adorable baskets. Fun? Absolutely. Effective? TBD.

You know I love a beautiful room, but beauty always, always, always needs to come after function when kids are involved.

Start by asking:

What information are people constantly coming to me to get? That’s the information your environment may need to hold.

In a classroom, that might be:

• Today’s schedule and upcoming transitions

• A clock or visual timer

• Workshop groups and rotations

• Sequenced directions

• Who is leaving for speech, OT, tutoring, or another service

• Carpool or dismissal information

• The week’s most useful anchor charts

• Classroom expectations

• What to do when finished

• What materials are needed now

At home, it might be the family calendar, activity schedules, school rotation days, weekly commitments, meal information, papers that genuinely require reference, or expectations around a routine that keeps causing friction.

Not all of it, just the right information. Because if it contains too much, it won’t be updated regularly and will eventually become white noise.

Try This This Week

Don’t build a Command Center yet. For three days, simply collect the questions.

Every time someone in your classroom or family asks you for a piece of logistical information, make a tiny tally somewhere.

Then look for repetition.

What information are you functioning as the keeper of?

Choose one recurring question and move its answer out of your brain and into the environment.

Maybe that’s a visual schedule. Maybe it’s a timer. Maybe it’s three photographs showing the morning sequence. Maybe it’s a family calendar. Maybe it’s simply putting Tuesday’s gymnastics bag beside the door on Monday night.

Start there and then watch.

• Does anyone use it?

• Does the question decrease?

• Does a child begin checking it without you?

• Does your brain feel just a tiny bit quieter?

That last probably counts the most. And resist the urge to answer, even if you know the answer. In all leadership scenarios (and yes, being a teacher and/or parent is definitely leadership), there is a training period where you slowly teach your people not to rely on you for everything. Feel free to say, “where could you find that information?”

Eventually, they will start there instead of starting with you.

The Permission

You do not need to become better at remembering everything.

I actually think many of us (especially teachers and parents) have spent years trying to become increasingly impressive containers for an absurd amount of information.

Who’s bringing snack? What time does practice start? Who goes to reading support at 10:20?Which child needs support with his pencil grip during writing time? When is the field-trip form due? What day does her class need to wear green?

At some point, the answer cannot be try harder to remember.

Let the environment remember some of it.

Because every piece of logistical information you move out of your brain creates a little more room for noticing, listening, teaching, and being present. That is truly the reason to create a Command Center. It isn’t there so we can run perfectly organized homes or classrooms. It’s so the people inside them don’t have to spend quite so much energy figuring out what happens next.

Predictability is one of the best ways an environment can say: You’re safe.

And I think our homes (and our classrooms) could say that a little more often.

Think Like a Designer

A designer doesn’t ask:

How can I display all of this information?

A designer asks:

What does this person need to know, at the moment they need to know it, in order to act successfully without unnecessary help?

That is a completely different question.

So stand in your kitchen… or your classroom… or your homeschool room, and notice where the questions happen:

• What are we doing next?

• What do I need?

• When are we leaving?

• Where am I supposed to go?

• What happens when I’m finished?

• Is today PE?

• Who’s picking me up?

Then notice which of those questions actually require you. Some do… Your child should absolutely come to you when they are worried, confused, hurt, lonely, curious, or seeking connection. Your student asking for help is not evidence that your system has failed.

But Is today library day? The wall can handle that one. Save yourself for the questions that need a person.

I’ve been in education for 16 years, and every August looks and feels exactly the same, regardless of where I am.

The room is beautiful. Orderly. Clean.

The pencils are sharp and in their neat little “Sharp” bucket, next to a completely empty “Needs to Be Sharpened” bucket. The student folders are crisp, with absolutely no bends or creases in them. The nametags hang proudly on the door, “Amelia,” “Lula,” “Bennett,” but don’t conjure up many feelings yet because the teachers don’t know (or barely know) their kids.

And then they arrive.

The kids do.

And it is so wonderful.

It’s early. The room is chilly. They are nervous. There are hugs and parent questions and last-minute supply drop-offs. Children group together in different parts of the room, absorbed in their various activities until that part ends.

And once the first hour of the first day of school ends, the school year is officially up and running.

This is where the questions begin.

“Where do I put my sweater?”

“Can I get some water?”

“Where do I put this when I’m finished?”

“What do I do next?”

“Where are the pencils?”

“Can I go to the bathroom?”

And y’all, of course they have questions. Everything is new.

But over the course of my career, I’ve come to encourage teachers to think differently about some of them: a classroom isn’t truly organized if the teacher is the only one who knows where things are and what students are supposed to do.

Of course, the goal is not to create a classroom where children stop asking their teacher for help.

There are developmentally appropriate times and reasons when children will naturally need help. They need to know that their teacher is a safe person to turn to when they’re confused, worried, stuck, or simply unsure. We want those questions. We want that trust. We want children to know that there is a caring adult in the room who will help them when they need it.

The questions I’m talking about are the ones that don’t need to occupy a teacher’s brain, so that she has more capacity for connection, building community, noticing children, teaching well, and responding to the things that actually require her judgment.

Where does my finished work go?

Where can I get another pencil?

What do I do when I’m finished?

Where does my water bottle belong?

Because every time the teacher has to answer one of those questions, she is carrying a tiny piece of information that might be able to live somewhere else.

In the environment.

And that’s where I want us to start this week.

Not by asking children to remember more.

Not by asking teachers to explain things one more time.

By looking around the room and asking:

What could this environment communicate without me?

The questions your room could answer

This is where I want you to start paying attention to the questions you answer all day long.

Not because you shouldn’t answer them. Not because your students should already know. And definitely not because we’re trying to create a room full of tiny, completely self-sufficient people who never need us.

But because your attention is one of the most valuable resources in your classroom.

Every repeated logistical question requires you to stop what you’re doing, retrieve the answer, communicate it, and then shift your attention back to whatever you were doing before.

Where does this go?

You answer.

Back to your small group.

Can I get another piece of paper?

You answer.

Back to the child whose reading you’re trying to listen to.

What do I do when I’m finished?

You answer.

And back again.

One question is nothing.

Twenty-two children asking dozens of tiny logistical questions across a seven-hour school day is something entirely different.

Researchers call this cognitive load, essentially, the amount of mental effort we’re asking the brain to manage at one time. And teachers already carry an extraordinary amount of it.

You’re delivering a lesson while noticing that someone looks unusually quiet today, remembering that another child needs to leave for speech at 10:15, watching the clock, monitoring behavior, thinking about the email you need to send a parent, and realizing that the copier jammed halfway through the math pages you need after lunch.

(And someone needs a Band-Aid. There is always someone who needs a Band-Aid.)

So if the room can remember where the pencils go for you?

Let it.

If the room can tell children what happens after they finish their work?

Let it.

If the room can show a six-year-old where to return the scissors without requiring another piece of your attention?

Let it.

This isn’t about becoming less available to children.

Let the environment carry the information it can carry, so you have more capacity for the things only you can do.

Repeated questions are data, not discipline problems

This is the part I really want you to sit with, because it genuinely changes everything.

When five different children ask you where the pencils go in the same morning, that is not evidence that your students aren’t listening.

That is your room giving you information.

The repeated question is data. And data is useful.

Here’s a simple practice that will transform your first two weeks, and honestly, it’s kind of fun once you start doing it:

Tomorrow, keep a notebook or Post-It note beside you. Every time a child asks you a logistical question… where does this go, what do I do next, can I get a, where is the… write it down, then make a tally mark for every time that question is essentially asked again throughout the day.

Don’t fix anything yet.

Don’t redirect anyone.

Just collect.

At the end of the day, look for the question you answered most.

Then ask yourself just one thing:

Could the room answer this instead of me?

That single question is the beginning of environmental design. And I promise, once you start asking it, you cannot stop.

A quick and important note about what’s developmentally appropriate

Before we go further, I want to say something clearly, because I think it matters.

Some questions are supposed to happen.

A child asking can I go to the bathroom? is not an environmental design failure. A child coming to you because they’re confused, worried, stuck, or simply unsure needs to know that their teacher is a safe person to ask for help.

And I don’t want a five-year-old thinking, I should already know this.

I certainly don’t want a teacher hesitating to help because the room was somehow supposed to have done her job for her.

Young children are still developing the executive-function skills that allow them to hold sequences, remember locations, and navigate systems independently. A five-year-old who asks where the pencils go every morning for three weeks isn’t failing to listen. Their brain is still learning how to hold that information automatically.

Grace first. Every time.

What we’re looking for are the places where the environment can appropriately carry a little more of the load.

If twenty children have to ask you where to put their finished work, that’s different from a child asking you to help her figure out what to do when she feels stuck.

One is a relationship we want to protect.

The other may be a system we can improve.

And when we improve those systems, everybody gets something back. The teacher carries fewer tiny logistical decisions in her head all day. Children get more opportunities to practice doing things for themselves.

The goal isn’t less connection with the teacher. It’s less unnecessary dependence on the teacher, so that there is more capacity for the connection that actually matters.

Let the room answer

Here’s a principle I love: a thoughtfully designed space has this quality: a stranger could walk in and understand something about how it works.

Not everything.

But some things.

The flow of the room, the logic of the shelves, the sequence of the morning; it should be legible to someone who has never been there before.

Because if it isn’t legible to a stranger, it almost certainly isn’t legible to a seven-year-old navigating it on day 3 of school.

So what does environmental legibility actually look like?

Here’s what I’d tell a teacher I worked with (let’s call her Sarah):

1. Labels with photographs, not just words.

For early readers especially, a photograph of the object that belongs in a container removes the reading requirement entirely. The child doesn’t need to decode the word crayons to know where the crayons live.

They need to see a picture of crayons.

Simple. Immediate. Answerable by the room.

2. Consistent homes for everything.

The pencil caddy lives in the same spot every single day. The turn-in basket does not move. The morning supplies are in the same location on Monday as they were on Friday.

Consistency is the environment doing the remembering so the child doesn’t have to.

(And so Sarah doesn’t have to either.)

3. Visual sequences where the sequence actually happens.

If you want children to know what to do when they finish their work, post the steps beside the turn-in basket… not on the front board, not across the room, but exactly where the decision gets made.

Finished? Check your work. Add your name. Place it here. Choose a book from the library basket.

Four steps.

Accessible AT the point of need.

Done.

4. A clear answer to “What do I do when I’m finished?”

Y’all, this is the question that derails more classrooms than almost any other.

Because when twenty-two children finish at twenty-two different times and none of them know what to do next, what you get is not necessarily a management problem.

It may be an environmental design problem.

Build the answer into the room before the first child finishes their first assignment.

5. Materials at child height, accessible without permission.

If a child has to ask before they can get a piece of paper, you have designed a dependency.

Ask yourself honestly: What could they access independently?

Then design for that access.

The answer is almost always more than you think.

But here’s what this is really about

I want to go one level deeper, because I think this is the most important part.

Every time the environment successfully answers a question for a child: every time a seven-year-old looks at the label, finds the basket, reads the sequence, gets their own paper without asking, something accumulates inside them.

I know what to do.

I can find what I need.

I can figure this out.

I don’t have to wait.

These are not small moments, friend.

These are the raw material of independence becoming identity.

And they happen dozens of times a day in a well-designed room, or they don’t happen at all in a room where the teacher is the only one who knows where anything goes.

A room that needs you to explain everything tells children, quietly and constantly:

You cannot navigate this without help.

A room that answers the questions it reasonably can tells children something entirely different:

You can do this.

And that is the argument for environmental design that I don’t think gets made loudly enough.

It is not about beautiful baskets or matching labels or an Instagram-worthy classroom reveal.

It is about who children get to be in the room you build for them.

The room is teaching.

Make sure it’s teaching capability.

Think Like a Designer

1. Pick the one question you answered most today.

2. Just one, and write it down.

3. Now stand in the spot where children ask it most often. Look around from that position; not from your height, but from theirs. Actually get down if you need to.

See what they see.

Ask yourself:

What is the room currently saying at this moment?

And:

What would it need to say instead?

Then change one thing…

• One label.

• One location.

• One visual sequence posted at the point of need.

Not the whole room. One thing.

The Permission

You are not failing because your students keep asking.

You are simply carrying information that the room could be holding for you, and maybe nobody taught you that was possible.

Teacher preparation programs spend thousands of hours on lesson planning, classroom management strategies, and curriculum design. Almost none of that time goes toward teaching educators how to intentionally design the physical environment where all of it happens.

That is not your oversight.

That is the gap in our country’s teacher education programs.

And I have spent sixteen years watching teachers close it individually and independently, one label, one bin, one visual sequence at a time.

You were never supposed to carry every piece of logistical information yourself.

Some of it can live in the room.

And when it does, you have more of yourself left for the parts of teaching that no basket, label, shelf, or visual sequence could ever replace.

The child who needs reassurance.

The reader who finally gets it.

The student who needs you to sit beside him for a minute.

The relationship.

That’s what we’re making room for.

Alone in my classroom on an August morning, overhead lights out, sunlight pouring in, air conditioner cranked on high while I’m in there in shorts and a tank top, but I literally don’t care because my brain and body are going a million miles a minute: one of the last things I used to do before school started was walk the schedule and sit in every child’s seat.

I didn’t just sit in a chair; I walked their entire day:

Arrival → backpack → seat → carpet → supplies → bathroom → small group → lunch/line → library → dismissal.

Through each transition and new activity, I asked myself:

• What will they see?

• What will they be asked to do?

• How might they feel in each scenario?

This is such an important exercise for any educator, and here’s why: it shifts your perspective from the person with the most control in the room to the person with the least.

We all feel more comfortable when we’re in control and we know what’s coming.

I once heard it explained in a leadership meeting like this: When you’re in the driver’s seat going 80 mph down the highway, you might feel perfectly confident and calm because you know where you’re going and what you’re doing. Sit in the passenger seat of that same car, though, and you might be having a completely different experience.

(I don’t know about you, but this is completely true of me and my husband every time we hit I-40!)

The speed didn’t change.

Your position did.

And that’s what I want you to do in your classroom.

Sit where your students will sit and imagine, for a moment, that you aren’t the person who designed the room. You’re the person being asked to navigate it.

Can I see my teacher when she’s teaching?

Can I see the board clearly?

What else do I see when I look around that might compete for my attention?

Can I see my teacher from the classroom library? (Which, of course, also means she can see me in the classroom library. Wink wink.)

Can I clearly see where to put my finished work, and is it labeled in a way I understand?

If I need a new pencil, can I tell where to get one?

If I need help, do I know what to do?

The classroom looks completely different when you stop looking at it as the person who designed it.

Through my work helping dozens of teachers over the years, one of the things I’ve noticed we most often miss is that every child in the room is experiencing a slightly different version of the space.

Yes, these students have the same teacher, the same furniture, the same walls with the same décor. However, the child sitting beside the pencil sharpener experiences a different classroom than the child beside the window. The child facing the hallway is having a different experience than the child facing the whiteboard. The child who sits directly on the path to the classroom library has a completely different experience than the child tucked into a protected corner.

Once you begin looking at the room this way, some of the small shifts you could make become surprisingly obvious.

Before you get disheartened by that, keep in mind that there are only a small number of “Goldilocks” seats in any classroom and, depending on the size of your class, children will have to occupy some of the less desirable places at different points in the year.

Johnny moves to the seat by the door and is suddenly more distracted. Margaret has been irritable lately, and then you notice her desk sits along the route with the highest traffic flow. Isla seems anxious, and you realize she has been sitting with her back to the door for seven hours a day.

None of those observations automatically explains the child’s behavior. But they give you another question to ask.

Could the environment be contributing to what I’m seeing?

That’s why I like to revisit seating charts regularly; not simply to move children for the sake of moving them, but to pay attention to what each location is asking of the child who sits there. Sometimes a tiny shift gives a child a break from a particularly demanding spot. And sometimes the child who struggled there is replaced by one who barely notices it.

We intuitively understand this in restaurants. There are tables where we happily sit so long that the server finally stops refilling the water, and there are tables we immediately ask to change.

Same restaurant. Two different experiences.

This is the gap I’ve noticed in my research: teachers are taught to think instructionally, while designers are trained to ask a different kind of question: What will the person using this environment actually experience?

As you move through your classroom, taking it in from your students’ perspectives, I want you to keep coming back to one central question:

Start with what you can see.

Sit down in one of your students’ chairs and look around.

Can you see where your teacher will be teaching? Can you see the board without turning your body or looking around another child? What is directly in your line of sight?

And then, maybe more importantly, what else is competing for your attention?

Is there a hallway full of people moving outside the door? A window overlooking the playground? A brightly colored bulletin board directly behind the teacher? A shelf filled with materials? The classroom library? Twenty-seven posters, anchor charts, labels, photographs, borders, and signs?

None of those things are necessarily bad. I love a beautiful classroom, and I certainly love a classroom that tells the story of the people who spend their days there. But attention is limited, especially for children. If we are asking them to focus on us, it is worth noticing what else we have asked their brains to process at the same time.

I would do this from several seats, too, because again, there is no single view of your classroom.

Sit in the front.

Sit in the back.

Sit beside the window.

Sit beside the door.

And if you have one seat you’re already thinking, Ohhh, I know exactly which one I need to sit in, start there.

You probably already know something.

Now, listen.

This one is harder to do in an empty classroom in August because your room is probably wonderfully, blissfully quiet.

Enjoy that while it lasts. :)

But think ahead to January.

What will this seat sound like when twenty children are in the room?

Is it beside the pencil sharpener? The sink? The classroom door? The HVAC system? The supply station? The place where children turn in their work?

If you’re sitting in your small-group area, what will you hear while you’re trying to work with five children who need your full attention? Will another group be working directly beside you? Will children have to walk behind you to get supplies? Is the classroom library close enough that you’re going to hear every whispered debate over who gets the next Dog Man book?

This is one of those places where I think we can unintentionally ask so much of children.

We might look at a child who is struggling to pay attention and think, Johnny, focus.

But Johnny may be sitting beside a hallway where people pass by fourteen times during the lesson.

That doesn’t mean we never teach Johnny how to focus despite distraction. Of course we do. Learning how to direct our attention is an important skill.

It just means that before I ask Johnny’s brain to work harder, I want to know whether the room could work a little harder for him.

Pay attention to what happens around your body.

This is the one I think adults tend to miss.

We know where we’re going. We’re taller than almost everything in the classroom. We can step around a chair, reach over a table, grab something from a shelf, or take a shortcut without thinking very much about it.

Children experience the room differently.

Sit in the chair and notice what happens around your body.

• Will people regularly walk behind you?

• Will someone have to squeeze between your chair and another table?

• Are you sitting in the path between the carpet and the cubbies?

• Will children reach over you to get supplies?

• If you push your chair back, is there actually room to stand up?

This is where I come back to the restaurant example. Part of what makes that table beside the kitchen uncomfortable is not necessarily anything we can point to when we first sit down. We just become constantly aware of movement around our bodies.

Someone brushes behind your chair.

A server walks past carrying a tray.

You scoot in to let someone through.

The kitchen door swings open.

Your attention keeps getting pulled away from the conversation in front of you.

Children experience that same kind of low-level interruption in classrooms all day long.

And sometimes we don’t notice it until we sit where they sit.

What can I reach?

Now I want you to walk through your day.

If I’m a child in this classroom and I need a pencil, where do I go?

If I finish my work, what do I do with it?

If I need paper, scissors, a glue stick, a math manipulative, or a book, can I get it myself?

If I spill something, can I help clean it up?

If I’m finished early, do I know what I’m allowed to do next?

If I need something and cannot reach it, what happens?

This is where classroom design starts affecting independence in ways that are so easy to miss.

We sometimes say that we want children to be independent while designing a room that requires them to ask an adult for help fifteen times a day.

And then, of course, by January, we’re tired of answering those questions.

Where are the pencils?

What do I do with this?

Can I get another piece of paper?

What do I do when I’m finished?

Where does this go?

If you’re answering the same question over and over again, I don’t think the first conclusion needs to be, They aren’t listening.

I think it’s worth looking around.

Could the environment answer any of these questions for us?

What am I expected to remember?

This may be my favorite part of the exercise because it gets to something I care about so deeply.

Children already have a tremendous amount to remember at school.

Remember your lunch number. Remember your folder. Remember which day you have PE. Remember to bring your library book. Remember where your homework goes. Remember what to do when you’re finished. Remember which materials you need. Remember where you put your water bottle. Remember that today is Tuesday, so the routine is slightly different.

And somewhere in there, please also use self-control, follow the rules, navigate social-emotional frustrations, and learn to read. :)

That’s a lot.

One of the most generous things we can do with an environment is allow it to carry some of that cognitive load for us.

A clearly labeled basket remembers where the finished work goes.

A visual schedule remembers what happens next.

A consistent place for pencils remembers where to find one.

A hook at child height remembers where the headphones belong.

A thoughtfully arranged shelf can communicate what is available without requiring the teacher to explain it every time.

And every small thing the environment remembers is one less thing the child (and often the teacher) has to hold in their head all day.

Think Like a Designer

Before students come back, I want you to try this once.

You don’t need to rearrange your entire classroom. Please don’t read this at 9:00 p.m. and decide that I have instructed you to move every piece of furniture before tomorrow morning. :)

Just choose one part of the day (Arrival is a great place to start):

1. Walk through the door as if you’re one of your students.

2. Where do you go first?

3. What are you carrying?

4. Where does your backpack go?

5. What do you do with your water bottle?

6. Where do you put your folder?

7. Where are you supposed to go next?

8. Can you tell?

9. Then actually sit down.

10. Look around.

11. Listen.

12. Notice what is happening around your body.

13. Notice what you can reach.

14. Notice what you are expected to remember.

And pay particular attention to any moment when you find yourself thinking, Well, they know they’re supposed to…

Maybe they do.

But that’s exactly where I want you to get curious.

Could the room help them know?

Could the room make the desired behavior a little more intuitive?

Could the room make independence a little easier?

Could the room carry any of this responsibility for you?

You may discover that the answer is moving a basket six feet… or turning a desk… or swapping two students’ seats… or moving the pencil sharpener away from your small-group table… or lowering a supply so children can reach it themselves.

Nothing Instagram-worthy. No classroom makeover required.

Just a room that works a little better for the people inside it.

Then try it somewhere else.

Once you start doing this, it’s very difficult to stop (I do it everywhere)!

At home, sit at your child’s homework spot and look around… Sit on the floor of the playroom…

Stand where your child stands when they come home from school hungry and sweaty, carrying a backpack, lunch box, water bottle, artwork, and three pieces of paper you’re apparently supposed to sign before tomorrow morning.

Lie down in their bed.

Sit in their favorite reading spot.

Walk from your front door to wherever everyone is supposed to put their shoes.

And ask the same question:

What is this environment asking this person to do?

• Is the behavior you want easy?

• Can they tell what to do without asking you?

• Can they reach what they need?

• What is competing for their attention?

• How much are you asking them to remember?

• How does the space feel from there?

You don’t have to become an interior designer to do any of this. You just have to become curious about the experience of the person who has less control over the environment than you do.

I think that’s ultimately why I used to walk the schedule before my students arrived.

By August, I had spent hours in that classroom. I knew where everything was because I was the person who put it there. I understood every basket, every shelf, every routine, and every decision. Every system lived fully in my brain, but sometimes only made it partially out and into the room.

Of course the room made sense to me.

I designed it.

The better question was whether it would make sense to the children who were about to walk through the door.

So before you call your classroom finished this August, sit down.

Sit in their chairs. Sit on the carpet. Sit in the cozy corner. Walk to the pencil sharpener. Get a book. Put away a backpack. Pretend you don’t already know where everything belongs and let the room guide you.

You may notice something you couldn’t see while standing at the front of the room.

And once you do, don’t feel like you need to fix everything at once.

Change one thing, then watch what happens.

Sit down.

Not in your chair, but in theirs.

Look around. Notice what catches your attention. Notice what you can reach. Notice what you can’t. Walk the path they’ll walk when they need a pencil or want to choose a book or aren’t sure what to do next.

And then change one thing.

You don’t need a perfectly designed classroom before the first day of school. You need a room you’re willing to keep noticing.

Because once the children arrive, they’ll show you what the room needs next.

And that’s when the real designing begins.

Every August, my husband and I spread two school calendars across our kitchen table.

Mine belongs to a PK-12 independent school.

His belongs to our county’s public school system.

By the time we’re finished, there are sticky notes, coffee mugs, Flair pens, mechanical pencils, and enough logistics to make anyone wonder if school is really worth all of this.

People sometimes ask how we stay organized with two full-time education careers, two boys, football practices, writing projects, family trips, school events, and a twelve-month admissions calendar.

The honest answer?

We don’t start by organizing our time.

We start by protecting what matters most.

We don’t organize our time. We protect what matters most.

The older I get, the less interested I become in productivity for productivity’s sake.

I’m interested in creating enough margin that when my boys ask me to throw a football in the backyard or a family sits down in my office needing reassurance, I have the mental space to be fully present.

Organization, at its best, isn’t about getting more done.

It’s about making more room for the people you love.

We Plan the Whole Year Before We Plan a Single Week

Most people plan one week at a time, but we start with the entire school year.

Before we think about football practice or birthday parties, we compare our school calendars.

• Where are our breaks?

• Which teacher workdays don’t overlap?

• Where will we need childcare?

• Which days will I use PTO?

• Where can we realistically travel?

• Where are the potential pressure points before they become problems?

Only after we’ve answered those questions do we begin filling in everything else.

Our goal isn’t to control the year: it’s simply to remove as many unnecessary surprises as possible. (Well, at least the un-fun surprises!)

This is where my calendar system comes in.

• Anything that is absolutely confirmed gets written in black Flair pen.

• Anything tentative stays in mechanical pencil until it’s finalized.

• When an event is about a week away, I highlight it in yellow so it rises to the top of my attention.

• When it’s finished, I highlight over it in pink.

• Over time, completed events turn orange.

I’ve been using this exact system since graduate school over a decade ago.

It isn’t fancy, but it simply works.

We Organize Around People, Not Tasks

Once the calendar is mapped, we shift to a different question.

Not:

“What has to get done?”

But:

“In what seasons can we prioritize which things?”

For me, the answer is surprisingly consistent every year.

1. Fall: “Hospitality Season” - This looks like putting my full focus on back-to-school, getting my family’s rhythms up and running, and welcoming new families into our school community.

2. Winter: “Deep Dive Season” - This looks like my Admissions busy season and cozy winter weekends spend deep in research and writing.

3. Spring: “Refresh Season” - This looks like setting rhythms for outdoor walks, editing our home, and realigning finances after the holiday season.

4. Summer: “Social Season” - This looks like more date nights, more dinner dates with friends, vacations, and all the fun events that come with warm weather!

What I love about these seasonal rhythms is that, once I get the season’s priorities up and running, all I have to do is maintain it for the rest of the year. Then when I get back to the season, I reflect and adjust what could be better. Those priorities become the filter for every decision that follows.

I don’t feel the need to edit my closet organization system in December because I know that’s a spring activity. I don’t feel guilty about not having more on my social calendar in the spring, because I know so much time is coming in summer!

This cyclical system reminds me that my daily routine in one season is often not sustainable in another system. Thinking of my year in “seasons” allows me to give myself grace and plan for the life we are actually living season-to-season.

Writing deserves its own paragraph because it’s the easiest place for me to lose track of time. I genuinely love this work. If I let myself, I could happily spend fourteen hours a day researching, writing, and thinking. That’s exactly why I set hard boundaries around it.

I rely on timers, alarms, and defined hours. Not because I don’t enjoy writing, but because I love my family more.

The purpose of a schedule isn’t to squeeze more into your life. It’s to protect what matters most from everything that doesn’t.

Here’s the realization that changed everything for me:

Every decision I make in August frees up cognitive load on a busy Tuesday in October and allows me to be the wife, mom, colleague, and friend I want to be.

We Turn Routines Into Rituals

I love naming parts of the day:

• Creative Hour (5-6 am)

• Ready Hour (7-8 am)

• Golden Hour (6-7 pm)

• Sunday Refresh (all laundry put away cleanly, kitchen stocked, calendars updated)

Naming events in our lives matter more than most people realize. Sure, they sound fancy and help us romanticize our life, which is fun. But they also transform ordinary routines into familiar rhythms our family recognizes…

• I know I write during before the boys wake up every morning, therefore I don’t feel tension to try to fit it in anywhere else

• The boys know their shoes come off and go in the shoe closet as soon as we arrive home

• We know we sign permission slips around dinner time and put them in folders, therefore we don’t even think or talk about them until then

These aren’t big systems.

They’re tiny agreements we’ve made with ourselves that quietly reduce friction every single day.

One of my favorite examples is our shoe closet. Every August, each boy gets new “school shoes” and new “church shoes.” Last year’s school shoes become “play shoes.”

Again, naming helps us here - when we name things based on the activity, it cuts down on friction and decision-making. The boys know which shoes to wear for which activities, so they don’t have to ask me or risk “getting it wrong.”

Pre-decided, they execute without help, we all keep moving forward.

I love learning environments, but it’s important to remember that homes teach independence every day, too.

We Automate Mundane Tasks

There are some things that are simply not worth using mental energy on when we’re in our peak busy season.

“We’re out of toothpaste” is the exact kind of friction I try to cut out of our daily lives. So we set up subscriptions for everything from paper towels to hair care products. If not having it might slow us down in the mornings, it arrives automatically.

The same is true for much of my wardrobe. Yes, I love putting together cute outfits, but my mornings are also very compressed and easily the most high-stress part of my day. So I created a formula to make that part of the day easier.

Here’s how my closet is organized:

• Solid pants & skirts

• Printed tops & dresses

• Solid tops & dresses

• Printed pants & skirts

Then I just pair a solid item with a printed item, and since everything is in the “deep autumn” palette, it usually all goes together without too much deliberation. I rent seasonal clothing through Nuuly because it allows me to add a little flare without having to store too many out-of-season pieces throughout the year.

My jewelry is always gold, my shoes are almost always brown, and my makeup routine is the same every day (also all on subscription). The fewer decisions I make getting dressed, the more attention I have for the people I’ll meet that day.

Every decision I make once is one fewer decision I have to make on a Tuesday morning in October.

Think Like a Designer

Designers don’t ask,

“How can I become more organized?”

They ask,

“How do the people who live and work in this space need it to function?”

That’s a completely different question. It shifts your attention away from working harder and toward designing better systems. Whether you’re organizing a classroom, a family calendar, or your kitchen counter, the principle is the same.

The environment should quietly support the life you’re trying to live.

I don’t organize because I love organization.

I organize because I love people.

I want more afternoons throwing footballs in the boys, or evenings lingering at the dinner table with my husband, more attention for the families who trust me with their children, more margin to write, more space to notice the people right in front of me.

For me, that’s what every planner, calendar, timer, and checklist is really trying to create: not a perfectly organized life, but a more present one.
