Nearly all of my football shirts have a job…

They’re worn, washed, worn again and then slowly decimated by a washing machine that’s never respected a care label. However, there’s a separate section of the wardrobe (an unofficial quiet wing of the collection) reserved for shirts that were never meant to touch skin.

I bought them knowing full well they’d go straight onto a hanger and stay there for eternity…let’s say they’re more artefact, than garment or more evidence, than clothing.

I appreciate others find this confusing. They say “a shirt exists to be worn” as if that’s the end of the conversation (or that I’ll listen). However, the truth is that some shirts aren’t bought to wear on a match day; they’re bought because the design did something to us the moment we saw them and buying them felt less like a purchase and more like acknowledging a higher calling. Essentially, we’re not dressing ourselves in these moments, we’re preserving a feeling before it fades.

Take the Venezia 2021/22 away kit, the one that looks like it was designed by someone who’d just discovered baroque architecture and refuses to shut up about it. I’ve never worn it and I never will. But what I did do is buy it, look at it properly for about four minutes and then put it away like I’d just handled a relic at the British Museum. The idea of wearing it feels almost disrespectful, like turning an ancient tapestry into a tablecloth.

Example number 2, the Mexico 1998 home kit, the one that looks like an Aztec calendar, it’s design is thick with symbolism that I only half understand and wouldn’t dare to dishonour by spilling a pint of beer down it. I don’t want it creased on my back, I want it flat, ideally framed and located somewhere at home where I can point at it and say “look what football shirt design used to let itself do” while shaking my fist angrily like ‘Groundskeeper Willie’ from the Simpsons .

That’s the part that non-collectors never quite understand: Owning isn’t the same as supporting and it definitely isn’t the same as wearing.

Somewhere along the way, some of my shirt collection stopped being about the team and started being about the object itself. The crest, the cut, or the specific year it took someone at a kit manufacturer to be brave enough to put the pattern into production. If this statement even slightly resonates with you, then you’re not a fan of the club anymore, you’re a fan of the design choice.

There’s a version of the football shirt-collecting hobby where we chase shirts linked to players, games, goals and seasons, which is all very noble. However, there’s amother version, where we hunt shirts in the same way that other people hunt vinyl for example.

The Nigeria 2018 home kit falls into this camp for me; I own it, but I’ve never once worn it outside and that’s mainly because I still think it’s one of the most on-point design decisions Nike has ever made. For me, this means that some things deserve to exist in life even if their only function is existing.

If I’m honest, I used to feel a bit sheepish about not wearing my most prized shirts. A shirt never worn can feel like a waste; like buying a nice pan and never cooking with it. However, whenever this thought enters my mind, I think about Cameroon and Puma’s 2002 sleeveless kit (the one FIFA banned for having the audacity to be different) and I remember that some shirts were never really about practicality or staying within the rules in the first place.

For this exact reason, my personal motto is that some shirts are for Saturdays and some shirts are for the shelf. However, let’s be clear that the ones on the shelf aren’t failures of the hobby, they’re the purest version of it. It’s the moment collecting finally admits what it was always secretly about:

We don’t buy every shirt to wear it, sometimes we buy it just to treasure it.

Football and wine have long been two of my biggest obsessions.

Not in the performative sense that modern culture often packages passion, but in the quieter, more dangerous way, where hobbies slowly become languages through which you understand the world.

Football has given me some of the happiest, maddest and most transcendent moments of my life. Wine, on the other hand, has taught me to slow down long enough to notice why those moments even matter in the first place.

Over time, it dawned on me that the conversations surrounding both worlds are strangely similar. Wine folk speak endlessly about soil, climate, texture, balance and identity; the football crowd speak about systems, structures, intensity and profiles.

However, beneath the jargon, both are essentially asking the same question:

Why do certain things flourish in certain places, and why can’t greatness simply be ‘copied-and-pasted’ elsewhere?

This essay for The Black Book is an attempt to build a bridge between those two worlds; to borrow the language of terroir from wine and use it to better understand tactics, culture and identity in football.

Understanding Terroir

There’s a tendency, particularly in the modern game, to treat tactics as something clean, abstract and transferable; a set of instructions that can be lifted from one place and imposed seamlessly onto another, like old software installed on new hardware.

But football has never worked like that.

Tactics aren’t just ideas, they’re environments. They’re histories, moments, people, and more than anything else, they’re shaped by place.

In wine, they call this terroir; the ‘total natural environment’ in which a wine is produced; soil, climate, topography, elevation and a element of human touch. A unique fingerprint that influences a wine’s flavour aroma and character. It’s the reason the same grape grown in two different regions produces two entirely different wines.

Believe it or not, football has its own terroir, and if ignored, ideas and tactics will fail, no matter how sophisticated they look on paper.

The Myth of the Universal System

Modern football discourse is obsessed with universality. We speak about systems as if they exist independently of context:

• The 4-3-3 and the 3-2-5 in possession.

• The inverted full-back.

• The high press and the low block.

These are treated like tools in a toolbox; available to anyone, anywhere, at any time. But this way of thinking misunderstands the nature of tactical success, because tactics don’t live on whiteboards or analysis software, they live in bodies, in instincts and in cultural rhythms that can’t be downloaded or installed overnight:

• A pressing system isn’t just about distances and triggers, it’s about collective aggression, trust, and the willingness to suffer together.

• A positional play system isn’t just about occupying zones, it’s about patience, spatial awareness, and a cultural acceptance of control over chaos.

You can import the shape of a system, but you can’t import the soul of it…and without soul, the system collapses.

Soil: The Ground Beneath the Game

Every football culture is built on a foundation, a kind of tactical soil that determines what grows easily or what struggles.

In some countries, the soil is rich in improvisation. Players grow up solving problems in tight spaces, developing a relationship with the ball that’s intimate and expressive. In other places, the soil prioritises structure, discipline and organisation. This isn’t accidental; it’s shaped by decades, sometimes centuries of footballing evolution.

Consider what happens when a coach attempts to impose a rigid positional system in an environment where players have been raised on instinct and improvisation. The movements may be learned, the patterns may be rehearsed, but under pressure, players revert to what the soil has taught them, because instinct always wins.

The reverse is equally true; place a highly expressive, improvisational system into an environment conditioned by structure and hierarchy, and the result is hesitation, overthinking and a loss of clarity.

The players aren’t wrong; the system simply isn’t rooted in the soil they were grown in. Thus it fails, not because the idea is flawed, but because it’s misplaced.

Climate: The Tempo of a Nation

If soil determines what can grow, then climate determines how it grows.

Climate in football isn’t just weather (though weather matters more than we admit)…it’s tempo. The emotional temperature and the speed at which the game is expected to be played and felt.

Some football cultures are fast by nature. The game moves quickly, transitions are embraced, and risk is tolerated. Others are slower and more deliberate, valuing control and rhythm over chaos.

These preferences aren’t tactical choices, they’re cultural defaults.

You can see it in how players receive the ball, how quickly they look forward or how comfortable they are recycling possession, versus forcing progression.

A coach who ignores this climate will constantly feel like they are pushing against the wind. Demanding slow, positional control in a culture wired for verticality creates frustration, both on the pitch and in the stands. Conversely, trying to accelerate a naturally patient football culture can lead to chaos disguised as ambition.

The best coaches don’t fight the climate, they work with it. They understand that tempo isn’t just a tactical parameter, it’s a cultural heartbeat.

Terrain: Space, Structure, and Constraint

In wine, terrain, or topography refers to the physical landscape or terrain where the vines grow: the hills, valleys, slopes and so on.

In football, it’s about the environments in which players are formed. Small pitches produce different players than large ones. Street football produces different instincts than academy football. For example, indoor spaces, uneven surfaces and crowded conditions all leave a permanent imprint on how players perceive space.

A player raised in tight, chaotic environments likely develops better decision-making and close control. Whereas, a player raised in structured, spacious environments likely develops better scanning habits and positional discipline.

Neither is superior, they’re simply different expressions of football intelligence. However, when these players are placed into systems that don’t align with their topographical upbringing, friction can emerge.

You can see it in the half-second delays, the slightly mistimed runs, and the hesitation between options. Tactics demand certain types of spatial awareness, and if that awareness has not been shaped by the right topography, the system may feel slightly out of tune.

Tradition: The Human Touch

Terroir isn’t just nature, it’s also human intervention.

In wine, this is where the winemaker and winemaking techniques make a difference.

In football, this is where coaching, history, and identity converge. Every football culture carries stories, legends and archetypes of what a “proper” player looks like, or what the “correct” way of playing feels like.

These stories matter more than tactics, because they shape expectations:

• A defender raised in a culture that glorifies last-ditch tackles will approach the game differently to one raised in a culture that values anticipation and positioning.

• A midfielder taught to dominate physically will interpret space differently to one taught to control rhythm.

These aren’t just stylistic differences, they are philosophical ones, and when a tactical system clashes with these deeply ingrained beliefs, resistance emerges. Sometimes consciously, but often subconsciously.

The players may follow instructions, but they won’t embody them; and football, at its highest level, isn’t about following instructions.

It’s about embodying ideas.

Case Studies in Terroir

To understand terroir in football, you don’t need to look at systems, you need to look at how systems change when they’re moved.

The same tactical blueprint, when transplanted into a new environment, rarely looks the same, but this isn’t failure, it’s adaptation.

A possession-based system introduced into a high-tempo environment often becomes more vertical, more direct, more willing to break its own rules. A pressing system introduced into a more patient culture becomes more selective, more measured, and less impactful.

The system bends to the environment…or it breaks.

The most successful tactical evolutions in football history haven’t been acts of pure invention, they’ve been acts of translation; taking an idea and reshaping it to fit the terroir in which it’s being applied.

This is why imitation is so dangerous, because what’s being copied is not just a system, it’s the product of a specific environment, and unless you understand that environment, you’re only copying the surface.

The Illusion of Control

Modern coaching is obsessed with control:

Control of space.

Control of tempo.

Control of outcomes.

The theory of terroir reminds us of a simple truth: football can’t be fully controlled, because players are not programmable. They’re products of environments that extend far beyond the training ground.

You can design the perfect tactical structure, but once the game begins, that structure is filtered through the instincts, habits, and cultural conditioning of the players executing it, and those things aren’t easily changed. This isn’t a limitation, it’s the essence of football.

The game isn’t beautiful because it’s controlled, it’s beautiful because it’s interpreted.

Coaching as Cultivation, Not Imposition

If tactics are shaped by terroir, then coaching must be reimagined.

Not as imposition, but as cultivation, or viticulture in wine-growing.

The role of the coach isn’t to impose an external idea onto a group of players, it’s to understand the environment those players come from, and to shape an idea that grows naturally within it.

This requires humility.

It also requires letting go of the belief that your ‘system’ is universally applicable. It requires listening not only to what players say, but to how they play, how they move, and how they instinctively solve problems.

The best coaches aren’t the ones with the most complex ideas, they’re the ones who understand their environment deeply.

They’re translators, gardeners and architects, who build with the materials available to them, rather than trying to import materials that don’t belong.

Recruitment: Buying for Terroir

Modern football often treats recruitment as a search for talent in isolation, but talent is contextual. A player who thrives in one environment may struggle in another; not because they lack ability, but because their attributes are misaligned with the new terroir.

This is why some transfers feel inevitable from the moment they are announced, whereas others feel wrong before a ball has even been kicked.

Clubs that understand the idea of terroir recruit differently:

• They don’t just ask: Is this player good or not?

• They ask: Is this player right for us? Do their instincts align with our culture? Does their tempo match our environment? Do their habits complement the way we want to play?

These questions are harder to answer and require deeper understanding, but they’re the difference between cohesion and confusion.

Football is more global than ever.

Ideas travel instantly. Matches are analysed in real time across continents. Tactical trends spread with a speed that would have been unimaginable a generation ago.

But terroir hasn’t disappeared.

If anything, it’s become more important; because in a world where everyone has access to the same ideas, the difference is no longer what you know, it’s how you apply it.

And that application is always local.

The teams that stand out aren’t the ones that copy best, they’re the ones that adapt best. They take global ideas and root them in local soil. They create something that feels both modern and authentic.

When Terroir is Ignored

When terroir is ignored, the symptoms are always the same.

The team looks uncomfortable. Not necessarily bad, just slightly off. Movements lack conviction, patterns feel forced and players hesitate in moments that should be instinctive.

Results may fluctuate, performances may show flashes of coherence, but there’s a persistent sense that something isn’t quite aligned.

This is often misdiagnosed as a need for more time, more training or repetition, but time can’t fix a fundamental misalignment between system and environment, because the issue isn’t familiarity, it’s compatibility.

To think about tactics without thinking about terroir is to misunderstand football. Football isn’t played in a vacuum, it’s played in places.

Places with histories, climates and cultures. Ways of moving, thinking and feeling that can’t be reduced to formations and diagrams.

The game’s greatest teams aren’t just tactically sophisticated, they’re environmentally aligned. They feel right, and that feeling, that sense of coherence between idea and environment, is what turns a system into something more. Something alive, and something that belongs.

In the end, footballing ideas only truly come alive when they fit the culture and environment around them. Just like wine, every style of play carries the imprint of where it was born.

I’m almost certain that there’s a football shirt in your life that no longer fits you…

Not “a bit snug”

Not “maybe after a good stretch”

No, this is a shirt that, if you tried to put it on now, would turn into a public health incident…

But yet…you’ve never thrown it away.

Before it became something you kept, it was something you lived in. This wasn’t a rotation piece and there was no ‘outfit planning’ - this shirt was worn with the kind of commitment usually reserved for professional athletes and people who refuse to do laundry.

The shirt was probably worn to one or all of the following places: to school (strategically, under a hoodie), to the park (inevitably grass-stained), or to bed (because why not). Because back then, a football shirt wasn’t clothing, it was identity. You didn’t wear it, you became it, and crucially, it fit you. Or at least, it fit in that generous childhood way where sizes were more of a suggestion than a science.

No one tells you this, but football shirts betray us slowly...

At first, it’s nothing; the sleeves feel…shorter, or the fabric sits a bit tighter. You start pulling it down slightly more often than usual, like you’re negotiating with it.

“It’s fine” you tell yourself. “It still fits”.

Let me be clear…it doesn’t still fit, but this is your shirt, so you persist. You wear it longer than you should, stretching both the fabric and the definition of ‘acceptable fit’ to its limit. At some point, the shirt stops fitting, but at another point (slightly later) you stop denying it.

Every football shirt has a final appearance, but the problem is you never realise it at the time. You just wear it one day, nothing dramatic happens, no music swells, no narrator steps in to mark the moment…and then, you don’t wear it ever again.

Maybe it felt too tight, maybe you chose another shirt without thinking or maybe you caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and thought “this is becoming a situation”.

Whatever the reason, that was it. Career over. No testimonial match.

Refer a friend

This is where most clothes get cut; they get thrown out, donated, repurposed into something unrecognisable. They leave quietly, without ceremony. However, football shirts don’t subscribe to this…they get ‘archived’.

The shirt moves into a drawer, a box, or that specific part of your wardrobe where things go when you’re not ready to make a decision. You tell yourself it’s temporary, but it’s not temporary.

Every now and then, you attempt a clear-out. You approach it with discipline, ruthlessness and the mindset of someone who has watched at least one minimalist documentary.

“This time” you think, “I’ll be honest with myself”.

You pick up old t-shirts. Easy. Gone. Random jumpers. Gone. Things you forgot you owned. Definitely gone.

Then you find it…the shirt, and suddenly, the process slows down. You hold it up; it looks smaller than you remember. Almost suspiciously small, like it’s been shrinking in secret. You consider the facts: you can’t wear it, you won’t wear it, it serves no practical purpose.

And yet…back into the drawer it goes. Minimalism has limits.

Here’s the truth: you’re not keeping the shirt, you’re keeping what happened in it:

The matches you watched.

The goals you celebrated.

The very serious, and very real belief that your outfit had a direct impact on the result.

This shirt carries a version of football that felt bigger, simpler, or more personal, and for reasons that are hard to explain, it feels wrong to throw that away.

There’s something quietly humbling about holding a shirt you’ve grown out of. It’s physical proof that time has passed. Not in a dramatic, life-changing way, just… steadily.

The shirt hasn’t changed, you have, which is fine. Growth is good. Evolution, maturity, all that jazz. But still, there’s a moment (usually in front of a mirror) where you briefly consider trying it on again.

Just to check…you shouldn’t…you know you shouldn’t…but you try it anyway.

It starts optimistically; one arm in. Fine. Second arm in. Manageable. Then the moment of truth. The shirt stops halfway down your torso and refuses to continue, like it’s made the decision for you.

You adjust, you pull and you negotiate…nothing.

At best, you achieve a look best described as ‘compressed nostalgia’, but at worst you realise circulation may become an issue.

You take it off immediately. Some things are better left as memories.

Over time, the shirt changes role. It’s no longer something you wear, it becomes something you revisit. Occasionally, you’ll come across it again, maybe while looking for something else or maybe deliberately…

You hold it and look at the badge, then the sponsor, and all of the small details you stopped noticing years ago. Suddenly, you remember things; not highlights, not famous matches, but the small things:

Where you were sitting.

Who you were watching with.

How much it all seemed to matter.

Football shirts are strange like that; they don’t just represent clubs or seasons, they represent you, at a specific point in time. Your routines, your habits, and your version of fandom…and this one, this shirt, represents an earlier version. One that didn’t overthink things, one that wore the same shirt three days in a row without concern and one that believed, very seriously, that wearing it might influence the outcome of a match.

You tell yourself you’re keeping it for sentimental reasons, which is technically true, but not the whole truth. You’re keeping it because it connects you to something that newer shirts can’t quite replicate. Not better, not worse…just different.

New shirts belong to who you are now, this one belongs to who you were then, and it turns out, that’s harder to part with than you expected.

There will always be new shirts, better designs and better fits. Or shirts that actually allow you to breathe properly…but they won’t replace this one, because this one isn’t really about football anymore, it’s about time and the strange, slightly emotional decision to keep a piece of it…

…even when it clearly, objectively, and absolutely no longer fits you.

In the opening moments of The Matrix, the audience is introduced to a radical idea: the world you think you understand is only a surface layer. Beneath it lies a system; patterns, structures, rules, and invisible forces governing everything.

For football supporters, this premise feels strangely familiar.

To the casual viewer, football is simple: twenty-two players, a ball, ninety minutes. However, anyone who has truly watched the game (we mean really watched it) knows that what unfolds on the pitch is something deeper. Patterns repeat, movements trigger reactions, and space appears and disappears like code flickering across a screen.

Sometimes, very occasionally, a player emerges who seems to see that system more clearly than everyone else. The film calls such a figure Neo, played by Keanu Reeves.

Football has had a few (Pele, Maradona, Zidane to name a few), but to understand why, we need to imagine something slightly absurd yet oddly revealing:

What if football itself were the Matrix?

If so, who would play the roles of the characters who populate that strange digital world? Who would be the ones bending its rules, designing its systems, or attempting to control it?

Step inside the simulation to see…

Neo: The One Who Sees The Game Differently

Every myth needs a central figure, and football’s closest equivalent to Neo is Lionel Messi.

Neo’s defining trait isn’t strength, speed, or even bravery, it’s perception. At some point in the story, he begins to see the Matrix not as a world, but as a system or a set of rules that can be bent once they are understood.

Messi has spent almost two decades doing something similar to football. Watch him closely and you notice something unusual…he rarely appears rushed. Defenders sprint, slide, and scramble around him, but Messi seems to move according to a different tempo.

This isn’t simply technical brilliance; plenty of players possess extraordinary technique. What separates Messi is his relationship with space and time, because sees what’s going to happen, before it actually happens.

Opponents often describe the experience of defending against him in strangely metaphysical terms. They know what he wants to do, they can even predict it, yet when the moment arrives, their bodies simply can’t react quickly enough. It’s as if Messi is operating half a second ahead of the game’s clock.

In The Matrix, Neo eventually reaches the point where bullets slow around him, allowing him to lean casually out of their path. Messi has produced footballing equivalents of that moment countless times:

A defender lunges.

The ball disappears.

Messi’s body shape shifts.

The defender slides past empty air.

Football analysts often describe this quality as “vision” but vision alone doesn’t explain the phenomenon. Messi’s genius lies not just in spotting possibilities, but in manipulating the system that creates them.

In other words, he doesn’t simply play the game, he bends it.

Morpheus: The Man Who Believed

Neo doesn’t discover his powers alone, someone first recognises them. In the world of The Matrix, that figure is Morpheus, the man who believes Neo is “The One” long before the evidence appears.

Football’s Morpheus is Pep Guardiola.

When Guardiola became manager of Barcelona in 2008, Messi was already recognised as a prodigious talent, but Guardiola saw something more profound: a player capable of redefining how a team functioned. His most famous decision was deceptively simple: he moved Messi into the centre of the pitch.

The false nine role (originally created in the 1950s by the Hungarian ‘Mighty Magyars’) Guardiola devised for him was not merely tactical innovation, it was a structural revolution. By removing the traditional striker from the defensive line, Guardiola introduced a paradox into the opposition’s defensive system.

Should the centre-backs follow Messi into midfield? Or should they hold their positions and allow him space?

Every decision opened a new vulnerability. Suddenly, defenders were no longer responding to the ball, they were responding to Messi’s movement within the entire architecture of the game.

Guardiola didn’t just coach Messi, he built a world in which Messi’s abilities could become inevitable. Like Morpheus guiding Neo through the simulation, Guardiola’s greatest achievement was helping Messi realise what he was capable of.

Trinity: The Silent Partner

No mythic hero operates entirely alone. In The Matrix, Neo’s closest ally is Trinity, a character defined by precision, intelligence and absolute reliability.

Football’s Trinity is Andrés Iniesta. If Messi represented football’s capacity for chaos and invention, Iniesta represented its opposite: harmony. He rarely dominated headlines, yet he appeared constantly in the game’s most delicate moments. Tight spaces that suffocated other players became gentle puzzles for Iniesta to solve.

Opponents tried to trap him between two defenders.

He turned.

They closed the passing lane.

He slipped through.

Watching Iniesta play often felt like watching a ghost move through crowded rooms. His understanding with Messi was particularly remarkable. The two seemed to operate on the same invisible frequency, exchanging passes in spaces so tight they appeared to defy geometry.

If Messi bent the rules of football’s system, Iniesta understood them perfectly, and together they created something rare in sport: a partnership where genius and balance existed in the same breath.

Agent Smith: The Rival Who Refused To Disappear

Every story about Neo requires an antagonist, and The Matrix found its perfect villain in Agent Smith.

In the movie, Smith is relentless; he adapts, evolves, and refuses to vanish no matter how many times he is defeated. Football’s Agent Smith is Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Messi–Ronaldo rivalry defined an era not because the two players were identical, but because they represented opposite approaches to greatness. Messi’s genius appears natural, almost inevitable, whereas Ronaldo’s greatness feels engineered.

Every season at the height of the rivalry, Ronaldo returned stronger, faster and sharper. When Messi produced moments of surreal creativity, Ronaldo answered with ruthless productivity.

If Messi was intuition, Ronaldo was determination. If Messi bent the system, Ronaldo attacked it head-on.

For more than a decade, the two players pushed each other to heights football hadn’t previously witnessed and between them, they produced scoring records that seemed almost mathematically impossible.

In narrative terms, Ronaldo’s role in football history mirrors Agent Smith perfectly: not the villain of the story, but the force that makes the hero’s story necessary.

The Architect: The Man Who Designed The World

Every system has a creator. In The Matrix, that role belongs to The Architect, the calm and analytical mind responsible for designing the structure of the simulation itself.

Football’s closest equivalent is Johan Cruyff, who didn’t just influence the game, but rewired it. His philosophy, rooted in the principles of Total Football, treated football as a dynamic system rather than a collection of individual positions. Space, movement, and intelligence became the central currencies of the game.

Every system also requires someone capable of interpreting it. In The Matrix, that role belongs to The Oracle, the mysterious figure who understands the deeper currents shaping the simulation.

What makes The Matrix such a powerful metaphor for football is the sense that the game itself contains layers.

Football offers supporters a similar decision; you can watch the game simply for its goals and victories, or you can look deeper, into the patterns, systems, and invisible relationships that shape every movement on the pitch.

Once you begin to see those patterns, the game changes forever:

You start to notice the moments when a midfielder moves five metres to create space for a teammate.

You recognise the tactical traps teams set for each other.

You understand why certain players appear to bend reality itself.

At that point, you have taken football’s red pill, and once you have seen the code of the game…there is no going back.

Before the False Nine: The Tyranny of Position

To understand the false nine, you need to understand what came before it.

For much of football’s early history, formations were rigid. Systems like the 2-3-5 and later the WM formation assigned players clear zones and responsibilities. The centre-forward, the “number nine” was expected to stay high, occupy defenders, and finish attacks.

The logic was straightforward and deeply ingrained: defenders marked attackers, attackers stayed in their lanes, and space was something to be fought over rather than shaped. Of course, movement existed, but it rarely broke the underlying structure of the system.

The striker’s role was not to confuse the defence, but to confront it directly. That rigidity created stability, but it also created predictability, and predictability, in football, is an invitation to find loopholes.

The First Cracks: G.O. Smith & Nándor Hidegkuti

It’s said that the false nine was first used by Corinthians in the late 1890s, where English centre-forward G.O. Smith preferred to supply the wingers with through balls and create, rather than stay as high up as possible on the pitch, which, att the time, was a revolutionary tactical shift.

However, the first true glimpse of the false nine came in the 1950s, through the revolutionary Hungarian national team aka the Mighty Magyars. At the centre of that innovation was Nándor Hidegkuti, a player who quietly dismantled one of football’s most fundamental assumptions.

Hidegkuti refused to behave like a striker. Rather than occupying the defensive line, he repeatedly dropped into midfield, pulling defenders with him and distorting the opposition’s structure.

This created a dilemma that defenders of the time weren’t equipped to solve. If they followed him, they left space behind, but if they held their position, they allowed him time and freedom between the lines.

England encountered this problem brutally in 1953, when Hungary defeated them 6–3 at Wembley. Hidegkuti scored a hat-trick, but the real significance of the performance lay in the confusion he created. England’s defenders were not just beaten; they were disoriented.

By vacating the forward line, Hidegkuti did something radical: he turned absence into a weapon.

Total Football: Johan Cruyff

If Hungary exposed the weakness in football’s structure, the Netherlands national football team expanded it into a philosophy.

In the 1970s, Johan Cruyff became the face of Total Football, a system developed by Rinus Michaels that rejected fixed positions in favour of constant movement and interchange. Players were no longer defined by where they started, but by how they interpreted space.

Within this framework, the traditional number nine began to dissolve. Cruyff himself often operated as a kind of roaming forward, dropping into midfield, drifting wide, and appearing wherever the game required him, but more importantly, his movement was part of a collective understanding shared across the team.

Total Football was not about one player disrupting the system, it was about the system itself becoming fluid. In that environment, the false nine ceased to be a role and became something more abstract; a principle embedded within the game itself. Positions were no longer fixed, space was no longer owned, and movement became the dominant language of football.

Cruyff did not invent the false nine, but he made it unavoidable.

The Italian Interpretation: Francesco Totti

For many years, Italian football was associated with defensive structure and tactical discipline. Yet in the early 2000s, a quieter evolution took place in Rome.

Under Luciano Spalletti at AS Roma, Francesco Totti was reimagined.

No longer a conventional forward, Totti began to operate deeper, acting as both creator and focal point. He drifted into midfield, dictated play, and allowed runners from wide and deeper positions to attack the space he left behind.

This was not improvisation, it was deliberate. By removing the striker from the defensive line, Roma forced opponents into a series of uncomfortable decisions. Defensive structures built on clarity suddenly had to deal with ambiguity.

Totti did not overwhelm opponents with pace or movement, he dismantled them with intelligence. In doing so, he demonstrated that the false nine could function not just as an idea, but as a repeatable tactical system.

The Modern Evolution: Lionel Messi

If the false nine had been evolving quietly for decades, it exploded into global consciousness with Lionel Messi at Barcelona under Pep Guardiola. This was the moment the concept reached its purest and most devastating form.

Guardiola’s decision to move Messi centrally, but not as a traditional striker, fundamentally altered how opponents defended Barcelona. When Messi dropped into midfield, defenders were forced into hesitation. If they followed him, they broke their own structure. If they stayed, they gave him time on the ball in the most dangerous areas of the pitch.

Around him, Barcelona’s system amplified the chaos. Wide players attacked the space behind the defence, midfielders controlled possession, and Messi himself became both creator and finisher.

Football shirts don’t arrive quietly anymore, they’re launched, judged, and dissected within minutes (yes that literally part of our schtick on our Instagram) by football fans across the world. Screenshots fly, opinions harden quickly, and consensus forms before most people have even seen the shirt in real life:

“Awful”

“Worst kit in years”

“The sponsor logo ruins it”

Usually, that’s where the story ends.

However, every now and then, something interesting happens; you look at the same shirt everyone is criticising…and feel the opposite.

No uncertainty or hesitation, just a strange recognition that you are one of few who actually like it.

Every era has its “ugly” shirts, the ones that become shorthand for failure. But the truth is, very few shirts are universally hated, they just don’t have enough people willing to say they love them.

Take the grey away kit worn by Manchester United in the 1995/96 season. Blamed rightly (or not) for a disastrous half against Southampton, it became one of the most infamous kits in English football history.

According to Sir Alex Ferguson, the players couldn’t see each other, which lead to the short being abandoned mid-game. The narrative literally wrote itself.

But when you strip away the story, what remains is something quietly interesting; the shirt was minimal, muted and almost modern in a way that feels ahead of its time.

Not a disaster, just misunderstood.

Or look at Arsenal’s bold, chaotic ‘Bruised Banana’ away shirt worn between 1991–93. People described as “Too loud, too strange and too much” at the time.

Now? It’s iconic.

Which tells you everything you need to know about how reliable first impressions really are.

Then there are the shirts that didn’t just divide opinion, they almost dared you to defend them.

There was a time when “almost” was enough.

Not enough to celebrate publicly, not enough to print on a CV, or not enough to anchor adult identity, but enough to preserve something fragile.

In 2000s London, and in football across London, an entire generation of boys grew up orbiting elite sport without ever entering it. We weren’t academy graduates or professionals. We weren’t even semi-professionals, but we were close. Or so we said.

“I was at Arsenal when I was younger”

“I had a trial at Spurs”

“I was in Fulham’s system for a bit”

The phrasing mattered. It was always vague, but confident. Specific, but unverifiable. Detailed enough to suggest legitimacy. Ambiguous enough to avoid interrogation.

These stories were rarely aggressive lies. Often, they contained a grain of truth: a trial, a development session, maybe a pre-academy camp, or a scout’s interest. But they expanded. A week became a season. A session became “being in the system”. A rejection became “club politics”.

The question isn’t whether these stories were technically accurate, the question is why they were so necessary; because the ‘almost-made-it’ generation was not performing deception, it was performing masculinity and protecting identity.

Football as a Developmental Crucible

To understand the ‘almost-made-it’ phenomenon, we must begin with developmental psychology. Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development places adolescence at the centre of identity formation. The stage he termed “identity vs. role confusion” describes the period in which young people consolidate who they are in relation to the world. Success at this stage yields a coherent sense of self, and failure yields instability.

Football, for many boys, becomes the primary identity scaffold during this stage. Before careers, before relationships, and before social capital, football offers hierarchy. It’s measurable, visible, and socially validated:

You’re selected, or you’re not.

You start, or you sit on the bench.

You score, or you disappear.

Selection into elite football structures; academies, development centres, trials and so on, confers not just opportunity, but symbolic capital. Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic capital is useful here: prestige, recognition, and honour that convert into social power.

So, to be “in the system” of elite football is to acquire symbolic capital. To be released is to lose it, and loss, particularly during adolescence, destabilises identity.

The Meritocracy Illusion

Youth football presents itself as meritocratic: “If you’re good enough, you’ll be picked”. However, meritocracy is rarely pure. Selection is influenced by a host of variables such as maturation rates, physical development, coaching bias, access, geography, and chance. Yet young boys internalise the system as absolute. When selected, they interpret it as proof of intrinsic worth. When rejected, the psychological cost is heavier.

Carol Dweck’s work on mindset is instructive here: young athletes often adopt performance-oriented identities rather than mastery-oriented ones and their self-worth becomes tethered to outcome rather than process. Rejection therefore threatens not just opportunity, but identity.

The ‘almost-made-it’ narrative emerges as cognitive insulation, and says:

I was good enough, but something else intervened.

In psychology, this is known as self-serving bias, the tendency to attribute success internally and failure externally. However, it’s not inherently pathological, it’s protective.

And particularly for adolescent boys negotiating fragile self-esteem, it’s adaptive.

There are football shirts you remember because of the goals scored in them. There are shirts you remember because of who wore them. There are shirts you remember because of what they represented.

And then there is a different category entirely:

The first shirt you bought with your own money.

Not the one your parents gave you, not the one you received for a birthday or a holiday, and not the one that arrived folded, already chosen, and already paid for.

This one was different. This one was yours.

Before that moment, football shirts existed in a slightly distant way.

As a child, shirts arrived like events; you didn’t question how they got there, didn’t have to think about price, or timing, or whether this was the right moment to buy…they simply appeared.

A new season would begin, and somehow, through the quiet logistics of parenthood, you would find yourself holding your club’s latest home shirt. Or sometimes not the latest, sometimes last season’s, or one from a sale rack, or even one chosen more for practicality than aesthetic perfection.

However, it didn’t matter, because back then, a football shirt wasn’t a decision, it was a gift: a token of belonging handed to you before you fully understood what belonging even meant.

You wore it everywhere:

To school even when it wasn’t allowed, to bed even when it was slightly too big, to the garden, to the park, and to a myriad of places where the shirt would inevitably pick up grass stains and damage that told their own stories.

You didn’t think about ownership, you just wore the badge with pride.

At some point, something shifts. It may have happened in a shop, maybe while scrolling online, or when you saw a new shirt launch, but on that fateful day, you realised quietly that this time no-one is going to buy it for you.

You look at the price, and for the first time, the shirt becomes something else. Not just an object of desire, but a choice.

Earlier this month, we had the honour of watching Alfa Mist perform an intimate concert at Nalen, a venue in Stockholm that has the proud history to being the stage for some of history’s jazz greats.

The performance was an amazing experience, watching insanely talented musicians at their best. During the set, the piano didn’t rush to fill space. The drummer didn’t dictate urgency. The bassline held everything together without demanding attention. You could feel the structure beneath it all, but you couldn’t see it.

It was freedom inside frame.

And somewhere between a suspended chord and a perfectly timed silence, a thought crystallised:

Eberechi Eze at Arsenal is jazz inside architecture.

The question isn’t whether he can improvise, but whether Arsenal are ready to let him.

Jazz Theory 101

To understand the comparison, we have to be clear about something:

Jazz is not musical chaos.

At its most complex, in Bebop, modal experimentation, or post-bop abstraction, jazz is theory-heavy, harmonically dense and rhythmically disciplined. So, the idea that jazz is simply musicians “doing whatever they feel” is frankly lazy. Improvisation in jazz depends on an intimate understanding of harmony, chord tones, passing tones, substitutions, modal frameworks, and so much more.

For example, Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue didn’t abandon structure. It simplified harmonic progression to create room for modal exploration. Instead of racing through complex chord changes, Davis slowed harmonic movement, and gave space for phrasing to breathe, and that shift changed everything.

Instead of sprinting through harmonic traffic, musicians could explore a scale deeply, via Dorian mode, Mixolydian mode and sustained tonal centres.

Eze plays in Dorian. Not literally, but philosophically. He doesn’t rush transitions. He stays inside moments longer than expected. He explores the same space repeatedly, but slightly differently each time.

That’s modal football - he doesn't overwhelm the game with notes, he stretches it.

It settles over the capital, St George’s in the early evening, when the harbour reflects the sky and conversation drifts without urgency. It sits in the hills above the capital, in villages where music travels softly between houses. It exists in the way people greet you, not hurried, not rehearsed, but open.

That calm is not the absence of history. It is what remains after history.

This is the third and final postcard from Grenada. The first explored diaspora and footballing renewal. The second looked at absurdity and resilience through a match that should never have unfolded the way it did. This last piece steps further back.

Because to understand Grenada’s football, you have to understand the forces that tried to shape the island before it shaped itself, and to understand how Grenada shapes itself now, you only have to walk into a rum distillery and listen.

Between Flags

Grenada did not begin under its own flag. The island moved between French and British control in the 17th and 18th centuries, valued for its land, its crops, and its location. Sugar plantations carved economic structures that would define the island for generations. Enslaved Africans carried knowledge, culture, and spiritual resilience that would outlast the empires.

French influence remains in names and architecture. British rule left language, legal systems, parliamentary structures. Grenada absorbed both, but did not become either.

When independence from Britain arrived on 7 February 1974, it was not a reset button. It was a beginning layered over centuries of inheritance.

Independence gives a nation a flag, but it does not immediately give it clarity.

Revolution in Close Quarters

In March 1979, Grenada experienced revolution. The New JEWEL Movement overthrew Prime Minister Sir Eric Gairy in a bloodless coup, and Maurice Bishop, a charismatic leader declared himself Prime Minister, promising reform, literacy, health care, dignity.

For many Grenadians, the revolution was hope in motion. For others, it was uncertainty in disguise.

Small nations experience political upheaval differently. There is no distance between ideology and neighbour, or between policy and family. So, when divisions deepen, they do so intimately.

By 1983, internal tensions fractured the revolutionary government. Bishop was executed following a power struggle, and on 25 October 1983, with concerns about Cuban influence on the island, the United States launched Operation Urgent Fury, invading Grenada under the banner of restoring stability and protecting American nationals.

From the outside, the invasion lasted days. From within, it altered the trajectory of a nation not yet ten years independent.

Grenada had lived under empire. It had experimented with revolution. It had experienced foreign intervention. All within a generation, and yet, it did not fracture.

Rum as Memory

During my travels in Grenada, I visited Clarke’s Court Rum Distillery, one of the island’s most historic distilleries.

Rum in Grenada isn’t simply drink. It’s continuity. It traces back to plantation economies and forced labour. It speaks to sugar cane fields and export routes. It holds memory in oak barrels.

The distillery air carries sweetness and heat. Fermentation tanks hum quietly. Ageing barrels rest patiently. Nothing rushed. Nothing forced.

We were welcomed by Margaret Allette Neckles, who I later discovered is a former Grenadian politician whose family runs Clarke’s Court. Her career spans governance and enterprise, public life and stewardship of one of Grenada’s proudest products.

She greeted us with a warmth that felt instinctive rather than curated. She spoke of their rum-making tradition without nostalgia. Of resilience without theatrics. There was pride, but not performance.

The tour of the distillery (taken by a wonderful employee named MJ) was generous. Questions invited. Stories layered. History acknowledged without becoming hostage to it.

It felt unmistakably Grenadian.

Warmth Without Fragility

Grenadian hospitality isn’t softness. It’s steadiness.

There’s confidence in welcoming strangers into your story when you are not ashamed of it. When you do not feel the need to simplify it.

Margaret’s career arc from politics to distillery leadership reflects something deeper about the island. Identity here is not rigid, it evolves and absorbs.

That same balance appears in football. The Grenadian national team, the Spice Boys, do not play with theatrical bravado. They do not posture beyond their scale.

They compete.

There is physical strength in their game. Directness in transition, but also patience. A willingness to sit inside pressure before releasing forward.

Rum teaches something similar. Heat must be managed. Timing respected. Over-distill and you lose character. Rush the ageing and you lose depth.

It wasn’t just a strange match. It was a case study in who writes the rules, and who lives with the consequences.

Let’s face it, you can’t come to Grenada in 2026 and not think about football.

Because as well as celebrating 50 years of independence, 2024 quietly marked 100 years of organised football on the island. A century of pitches carved into hillsides, of community leagues, of red, green, and gold stitched into fabric and meaning.

100 hundred years of turning up.

An Island That Carries Its History Lightly

Grenada’s history is layered. Indigenous Kalinago presence. French settlement. British colonial rule. Rinse. Repeat. Independence in 1974. Revolution. Intervention. Recovery.

However, the island carries its history lightly. Not dismissively. Just without allowing it to dominate daily life.
