This particular rabbit hole started because I was looking for tops to wear to Lollapalooza next weekend. I wanted a graphic tank that could carry an outfit, but not in the way a band tee carries an outfit. Something fitted and a little weird and colorful and ideally from another era of the internet, which is how I revisited a relic from my youth - Custo Barcelona. They’ve been sitting in the same part of my brain as Desigual and Save the Queen and all of those brands that made clothes before everything had to be beige, tasteful and easily understood from six feet away. Some of them are beautiful and some are arguably so fucking hideous, and most are both depending on which section of the shirt you’re currently looking at.

The colors, the patchworking, the slightly confusing imagery. Some of them are literal disasters (and I’m not joking borderline offensive lmao), but that’s what keeps sucking me into the vortex! The styling potential is unmatched, they function totally different than a classic graphic tee does. They want another print. They want a strange shoe. They want a confusing bag. And I want like 12 of them!

Anyways, we are back, here are 5 tops I loved on my deep dive and how I styled them!:

FIRST, THIS CUSTO BARCELONA TANK ON ETSY

Ya’ll know I love a print on stripe! It works because the top is already doing a navy and red thing, so the striped skirt reads like it belongs to the same story instead of fighting it. The blush bomber is the buffer, it's the only quiet piece in the whole look and it gives your eye somewhere to rest. Then the yellow wedge pulls that little bit of yellow out of the print and suddenly the whole thing looks planned. This is my favorite one so someone else should buy it so I do not. Thnx!!!

One of my go-to warm weather swaps for the last few years has been a mesh jersey instead of a basic tank, I usually find them for around $2 a pop from the boys section in the thrift store. I’m deciding they’re starting to feel a little too gym class pinny for me though, so lately I’ve been drawn to the older version from the days before mesh took over as the go-to textile of sportswear in the mid 1980s - the ringer style jerseys with appliqué letters and numbers & simple, classic color combinations.

I picked up one at Pickwick Vintage Show in Chicago this past weekend (from one of my favorite Chicago vintage sellers that I have been buying from for yearssss, X Vintage - follow her on IG she finds the coolest stuff), and have been browsing around all week. None of them are pristine, or honestly really in any condition above “good”, which I love. They all have some level of wear - faded color, softened fabric, natural distressing, they really all kind of look OLD, but mixed with new modern is where you get the depth to your fits!

They read sporty, obviously, but they contrast so well against something more tailored or modern, even for a casual lewk. They take something simple and give it a bit more charisma. Let me show you what I mean with these 5 I found -

FIRST, THIS VINTAGE 50s JERSEY ON EBAY

Starting off leaning into contrast here, the jersey keeps it casual, but the zebra + structured pant pulls it into something sharper - but STILL casual. It’s that mix of sporty and slightly wild that makes it feel intentional instead of thrown on. PS these are the Gap x Victoria Beckham pants that drop tomorrow (4/24) but I am a Gap cardholder so I did have access starting today and I did buy things 😬. There are some good pieces 😬😬.

This time around, they’re not so much the tight, aggressively flared, business casual in the club top we think of when we hear peplum tops. The proportions are softer, sometimes more subtle, sometimes more sculptural, but absolutely still a peplum. Here’s the thing though, the resale market is flooded with the ones we used to pair with a statement necklace 💅, and I actually think if you style them with something other than a neon colored skinny jean, there’s a way to make the “old” ones feel cool and modern.

FIRST, THIS 1980s GOLD METALLIC PEPLUM BLOUSE ON ETSY

Ok so this peplum top is before our time but the metallic texture and belt are so delightful I couldn’t resist. To bring back the millennial nostalgia, I styled it in a modern club going way (I think. Honestly the last time I was at a club was a few years ago for my friends DJ set and everyone was wearing lightwash jeans and sambas and I was in a 5 inch heel like WTF HAPPENED?). I do, however, think a top like this worn with a pair of jeans would be incredible too though.

Need a spring jacket but don’t want the same one everyone else is wearing? Vintage Caché is a goldmine. The brand was started in the mid 1970’s and was in 200+ malls all over the country by the 2000s (yes, that Cache, the store in the mall I used to associate with hot rich moms and homecoming dresses). The always had good shit in my teenage mall roaming days, but dig into some of the vintage, you’ll find they really did elevated statement outerwear long before my first Sbarro slice, and so much of it is what would be considering “trending” today: think stand collars, military buttons, sculptural tailoring, and bold texture. On resale, they’re mostly accessible (some of the REALLY good ones are unfortunately priced accordingly…), and many of the silhouettes feel right in line with what’s happening in fashion right now.

It’s not that I’ve been gatekeeping vintage Cache, it’s already a well-known secret amongst resellers and secondhand regulars: the vintage pieces are incredible. The brand leaned into drama, metallic fabrics, ornate buttons, rich textures, architectural collars, in a way that was very good then & maybe even more so now.

With the y2k style resurgence, the depop resellers really jack up the prices on Cache for the 2002 “going-out tops” (and there are many), but the jackets are where the real magic is. They have structure, personality, and the details that make an outfit feel finished before you’ve even added accessories.

Spring jackets are TRICKY. They need to be lightweight, interesting, and versatile enough to throw over whatever you’re already wearing. Cache somehow nailed that formula years ago. On resale, you’ll find everything from sharp military-inspired blazers to metallic wrap jackets to sculptural cropped styles that feel straight out of a runway archive.

Here are five I found online right now, and five ways I’d style them!!!

FIRST, THIS MILITARY JACKET ON ETSY

This jacket feels straight off the runway right now! I love pairing something this polished with slouchy denim to keep it from feeling too buttoned up ;). The mix of gold accents and relaxed proportions gives it that perfect “expensive but not trying too hard” balance.

I LOVE this so I really leaned into the drama with the styling. Funnel collars are another trend that’s everywhere right now, and this one feels especially striking in this iridescent fabric. I love pieces like this that are *almost* ugly, I think a lot of people might pass something like this up if they saw it on a thrift store rack because at a quick glance it might not seem like much - but it’s actually so so good. Because the jacket already carries so much visual weight, I like balancing it with playful contrasts to make it feel real modern - a bold printed skirt and a sparkly bag really brings it alive!

Start with the jackets, but don’t stop there. Vintage Cache is full of unexpectedly good pieces once you start digging. The deeper you dig, the better it gets… detailed tops, sculptural dresses, dramatic little evening pieces, etc etc. The jackets though… If you find a great one, the rest of the outfit almost styles itself!

Vintage men’s silk button-downs are my most sought after items on resale right now. They solve the “my outfits feel boring” problem instantly: unexpected print, fluid movement, built-in personality. The quality is better, the patterns are stranger, and the proportions are cooler than most modern versions. If you like your clothes to feel expressive but not trendy, this is your category to look into! They’re versatile enough where you can throw them on with really anything, dress them up or down, and wear them year round.

Of course, vintage women’s silk button-downs exist, but I always prefer the men’s. The collars are stronger (I hate the tiny weird collars on the women’s shirts), the proportions feel easier, and they don’t have that awkward tailoring or hyper-fitted silhouette that can makes them tricky to modernize. And silk is really the magic here, when a men’s shirt is oversized (even dramatically oversized), it doesn’t swallow you. The fabric collapses and drapes in a way that’s so easy to play with. You can fully tuck it into tailoring, throw a belt over it and wear it as a dress, or literally do nothing and let it flow. That flexibility is what makes them feel so cool.

And the prints are where it gets really good!! Abstract figures, odd little scenes, bold stripes, colors that feel slightly off and a little ugly but in a good way. I wish they could talk because I’m sure a lot of them have stories. But maybe I actually don’t want to know what was previously done in these shirts before I consider buying them 😂. ANYWAYS! I love a printed silk shirt paired with something of a similar fabric and pattern. Doesn’t this kind of look like they’re supposed to go together? The silk softens the structure of the red leather trench, too. When you mix bold pattern with a strong outer layer, the key is letting one lead. Here, the coat frames the print instead of competing with it.

At first glance, this is a classic business silhouette: tailored trouser, structured blazer, polished shoe. With a white button-down, it would read clean and expected. This is how you make novelty feel directional, the print is kooky but the outfit around it makes it work!

This shirt reminds me of something you’d see in a Dries van Noten collection with the moody, painterly abstracts. A lot of these 80s/90s silk prints sit in that same visual language. They’re expressive & almost “too much”, but when you style them with a Dries print in mind, they can look so cool. The key with prints like this is treating them like they are luxury instead of novelty. The warm camel and inky black tones mirror the palette of the leopard trousers, so instead of competing, they converse. When undertones align, bold-on-bold feels cohesive. And then the silk itself just elevates the whole thing, the fluid drape keeps the outfit from feeling heavy, which is what allows a print this rich to read sophisticated instead of ridiculous.

LAST, THIS CHEMISE ET CIE SHIRT ON EBAY

This one feels romantic in a way the others don’t. The muted sepia cityscape has a nostalgic, almost painterly quality, like a vintage postcard you’d find tucked into an old book in the very antique store also you’re looking for these shirts in. The softness of the print paired with structured pink stripes creates contrast in mood, there’s a classic, old-world feeling but then a playfulness at the same time. I love tucking an oversized silk shirt into a structured mini skirt. It gives you a waist, and the fluid fabric is forgiving; it collapses and shapes naturally, so you can get away with wearing a shirt thats 4x your size. Try that with stiff cotton and you’ll fight it all day and be afraid to lift your arms once you finally get your tuck right.

I recently got a nylon Tibi pencil skirt that I am loving, which sent me down a resale dive looking for more. Nylon is so often associated with outerwear or athletic pieces, but seeing it translated into skirts feels especially compelling. There’s something about bringing a performance fabric into a more styled or dressed-up context that creates a really cool, modern tension.

Pair a nylon skirt with heels, jewelry, or tailored layers and it instantly balances - sporty & refined, relaxed & intentional. It gives an outfit that “off-duty but thought-through” feeling. Texture plays a big role here, too. Nylon reflects light differently than cotton, denim, or wool, which gives even simple silhouettes a sense of dimension and movement.

Nylon skirts feel like an easy way to bring something unexpected into an outfit without overthinking it. They’re sporty, a little shiny, and make everything else feel more relaxed. Sometimes all an outfit needs is an unexpected piece, nylon usually gets the job done :)

There are vintage, handmade, and mass-produced versions, often made from woven tapestry blankets (or look-alikes). They genuinely feel like being WRAPPED IN A BLANKET, which is part of the appeal. The patterns are bold, quirky, and almost always a conversation starter.

At the end of the day, these are just really good wearable blankets. They’re warm, interesting, and do most of the styling for you. If you find one you love, you’ll reach for it more than you expect!

To go off track really quick, it also reminded me of how desperately I need the real gossip behind the Brad Goreski–Rachel split, and truthfully, any tea around how Rachel never seems to keep any relationships with her former styling assistants once they go on to build their solo careers (Taylor, Jordan, etc). Season 4 in particular, after the announcement of Brad’s departure, starts with tension around Brad “stealing” Demi Moore as a client from Rachel, which, btw, Brad is still styling Demi to this today!

Throughout the series, aside from the Chanel jackets and vintage kaftans, one item appears again and again on Rachel are fur vests. Vintage, faux, shaggy, statement-making. She was designing her own, buying them in bulk it seemed from Vintage stores, fur vests were everywhere, layered over dresses, tees, denim, anything. They’re deeply tied to that era, and unmistakably veryyy Rachel Zoe–coded.

Do fur vests feel a little 2010? Absolutely. But that’s why they’re worth revisiting. When something has fallen just far enough out of favor, it becomes interesting again, especially when styled with intention. Rather than recreating these looks verbatim, the focus is on finding versions that feel current while still nodding to their original context.

I’ve worn many faux fur vests in my day, and over the years I’ve parted ways with ones I wish I hadn’t (they were from Forever 21, but still). The rewatch has had me scrolling through resale listings to find ones that have nods to that era of fashion, but can be styled in ways that feel fresh and current. Below are five of my favorites I found, & how I’d style them now, with equal parts nostalgia and modern perspective!

That era of style was defined by individuality and an unapologetic embrace of excess, even the runway shows at NYFW featured throughout the seasons leaned bold, layered, and expressive. Somewhere along the way of the last 15+ years, we became so RESTRAINT! This Sui by Anna Sui vest captures that earlier sensibility perfectly. On its own, this vest borders on costume. But styled this way, it feels more like you pulled one piece from each of the Spice Girls’ closets and made it work. IIt’s loud, it clashes, but it’s also cool, unique, unexpected, the tension is what makes it interesting. I’m giggling the more I look at it because between the maxi denim, the t shirt, the boots, the glasses… I think I wear a version of this outfit on a weekly basis 😂

THIRD THIS ALICE + OLIVIA FAUX FUR VEST ON EBAY

This look is my nod to Brad Goreski’s early-era preppy streak in the show, filtered through something a little more relaxed. A traditionally glamorous animal print fur vest feels unexpectedly right when it’s dressed down with a rugby, a baseball cap, and a loafer. The contrast is what makes it work, the most interesting outfits often come from letting opposites coexist!

NEXT THIS DRIES VAN NOTEN VEST ON THE REALREAL

This Dries vest is (to borrow from the language of Rachel Zoe) BA-NANAS. It demands excess, so tripling down on print feels like the only honest response. The caged stiletto is a deliberate nod to the era, I had a similar pair of these from Charlotte Russe that I wore to homecoming in 2009 hehe.

LAST THIS VINTAGE 1970s CHAIN HOOK CLOSURE FUR VEST ON ETSY

The chain detail on this vest is (one more time in Rachel Zoe monotone) to die. It’s 1970s, so it feels like it was initially made for fancy fits, but once it’s paired with utility pants, flat shoes, something relaxed, it stops feeling precious and starts feeling cool. This look feels like 2010, all grown up!

Rewatching The Rachel Zoe Project reminded me that style not that long ago was messier, more personal, and less concerned with getting it right. I’m not even referring about the red carpet moments, but the day-to-day looks throughout the show. There was so much more individuality, character, and effort put into how people dressed. Yes, they were stylists, but the point still stands: Brad’s hyper-preppy uniforms, Taylor’s punk-leaning edge, Rachel’s boho glam, everyone was unapologetically themselves and uninterested in conforming (Brad did like to slip into a 6 inch heel every now and again, though).

The show becomes unbearable after season three, but it’s still striking to revisit the level of personal style on display a decade and a half ago and to be reminded of how many great pieces and trends came out of that era. These pieces aren’t meant to be resurrected exactly as they were, but reconsidered. The fun is in the editing: keeping the instinct, losing the excess, and trusting that individuality will always age better than trends!!!

I’ve been doing a lot of recon on 1980s cocktail dresses. I have nowhere to wear one, but I can’t stop looking at them. When people think of 80s cocktail attire, it feels costume-y and ridiculous. The more I look at them though, the more modern they start to feel. There’s a lot of currently trending silhouettes that are borrowed from this era (i.e., drop waists, oversized sleeves, exaggerated proportions). A lot of them actually feel surprisingly couture in 2025?

They’re structural and unapologetic, made in heavy fabrics that hold their shape. That density makes them especially right for winter, when dressing can carry weight, literally and visually.

If you’ve got a New Year’s Eve party, a winter wedding, or any formal event coming up and you’re bored of everything on Revolve, I’d strongly suggest looking to the resale market for one of these dresses!!! Leaning into minimal styling, like a simple strappy heel and a sculptural earring, lets the silhouette do the work and makes them feel dramatically modern.

FIRST, THIS VICTOR COSTA SCULPTURAL BOW DRESS ON ETSY

I really, really wish I had somewhere to wear this. The exaggerated silhouette of this skirt is to die for, I love how it reads like a simple black dress with a ridiculous skirt thrown on top. Pairing it with a simple black heel keeps the focus on the shape and makes the whole thing feel surprisingly modern.

This architecture of this dress! With the sharp angles, the exaggerated peplum, and the way it sits off the body, it almost feels like a weapon. It really doesn’t need much else but tis the season, so I gave it a statement clutch and earring :)

THIRD, THIS LAURENCE KAZAR SEQUIN DRESS ON EBAY

You know I love a graphic beaded moment! I mentioned in the intro that styling these dresses in a minimal way makes them feel modern, this one though I think you really need to lean into the sparkle all over to make it truly effective. Also, I love this Rabanne bag and wanted to pair it with this dress, and then I got sucked into NET-A-PORTER where I came across this $5,500 jacket from The Row & had to take myself back to Shopbop and Mango where I belong.

NEXT, THIS MORTON MILES ROSE PRINT DRESS ON ETSY

If I’ve lost you on the styling with this one, it’s ok. We’re just having fun. Why not try disrupting the formality of these dresses and going dress over pants mode with a pair of washed denim? I swear I had a Magda Butrym dress that looked exactly like this that I was never going to buy saved in my RealReal favorites for months.

I think this is my favorite, TBH. You might look at this dress and think it’s ridiculous, but imagine Khaite sending this down the runway. Context! Have little daydreams about these dresses, you’ll start to see the vision if I haven’t sold you yet.

I think part of why I’m so drawn to these is because they challenge how we talk about “wearability.” Not everything has to solve a problem or fit neatly into a category to be valuable. Sometimes it’s enough for a piece to expand your visual vocabulary a little. The most interesting clothes are the ones that shift your perspective before they even enter the shopping cart!

The technique comes from a small island in northern Scotland, where knitters worked with two colors at a time to create warm, structured sweaters built for rough weather. Those repeating geometric bands (the thing we immediately recognize as “Fair Isle”) started as a practical way to use limited yarn and add stability to the fabric.

It’s a pattern that’s been reinterpreted endlessly, but the vintage versions from the 70s–90s really stand out. They feel festive without being literal: the wool, the colors, the rhythm of the patterning… all of it fits naturally into December without drifting into “ugly Christmas sweater” territory. And most of these older knits are 100% natural fibers, which feels like a true rarity in 2025!!!

If you’re looking for a holiday sweater that doesn’t feel like a “holiday sweater,” this is the category that never misses. Here are five that I love, and a few different ways to style them:

Vintage fur accessories feel like stepping into another lifetime, the soft, dramatic layer women used to add when they wanted to be fancy pants. There’s something so powerful about a piece that’s survived 40–80 years of winters and is still so functional and beautiful. They are also the perfect accessory to style in the winter months. They modernize insanely well, are the perfect answer to bringing texture into an outfit, and give your look an element of luxury instantly.

There’s never a need to buy fur new, there is SO much in the resale market. Here are a few of my favs lately and ways I want to wear them:

FIRST, THIS VINTAGE FOX FUR HANDBAG ON ETSY

If you thought vintage fur accessories were just going to be reserved for scarves and shawls, think again! Vintage fur purses exist too! I can only imagine how this was styled in its day, which is why I love pairing it with a casual, androgynous base look - but throwing a current faux fur with it so it doesn’t feel too out of place.

NEXT, THIS MONGOLIAN FUR STOLE ON ETSY

People tend to associate vintage fur with one very specific aesthetic, but the truth is there are so many unexpected colors and textures out there. This hot-pink Mongolian scarf is such a dramatic, over-the-top piece on its own, which is why I love grounding it with a suede jacket and then leaning into romantic details underneath. This look has almost kind of got a 2000s Disney Channel teen star but in 2025 feel. If that makes sense? I feel like I’ve already one too many Lizzie McGuire references in RE:WORN.

We don’t have to only save fur for our fancy pants moments! I love the juxtaposition of it against everyday, even more athleisure leaning, layers. I haven’t been bold enough to show up to my yoga class in a fur, but I always think about how chic it’d be. Here is a way to wear fur to a workout that’s a little less over the top.

So that’s where I’m currently at with evaluating my winter accessories. I’m also trying to remind myself how annoyed I get when it’s 95 degrees and I have zero ability to layer or play with texture. Winter is the one season where you can really go for it, our time is now!

HI HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I want to start by saying thank you so much to anyone and everyone who supports what I do. Truly… I am SO GRATEFUL.

I’m by no means a big creator with a booming business (YET!!!), but since launching my personal styling business in September and working for myself full-time, I have a completely new level of respect for every small business owner, entrepreneur, artist, freelancer. ~Following your dreams~ is no joke. This shop has so much of what I love the most about vintage fashion. SPARKLES! COLORS! SHAPES! GLAMOUR! I purchased my Christmas ornament Nicole Miller silk dress from this shop a few years ago, and have followed ever since because they are constantly posting the most wonderful, over the top (but still very wearable!!), pieces. NEXT, FLYING APPLE VINTAGE

I’ve been purchasing from this shop for years. While they have many categories of great stuff, they’ve been one of my go-to’s for vintage tees/sweatshirts. I love them because not only do they find excellent vintage tees, but THEY PRICE THEM EXTREMELY REASONABLY!!! The price gauging on vintage tees over the years has gotten preposterous, and while I understand it for rare pieces — why do I constantly see moldy, insignificant t shirts being resold for $150? Anyways, shout out Flying Apple Vintage. I honestly think my Goodwill’s prices are higher than theirs!

THIRD, THE BUSY BAR CART

So this shop is not exactly fashion, however a great piece of glassware can be the best accessory to your outfit. I loooove a good set of vintage glassware, and I also think it makes for such special gifts, too. This shop finds the most elegant sets, and their product photo styling is always so damn thoughtful and cute 😩.

NEXT, PANDORA FASHION

I’ve been scrolling through this shop for years. They consistently carry an insane collection of vintage designer, and what I love is they have it separated by designer - so if you ever find yourself looking to scroll through an impeccable curation of Gianni Versace or Thierry Mugler for sale, here’s a great place to start.

LAST, OPTIK STUDIOS

SO MANY GOOD VINTAGE FRAMES. In every shape and color you can imagine. There are only so many ways you can redesign glasses. Scrolling through this shop of impeccable vintage frames, you can legitimately spot where luxury fashion houses find their inspo for their sunglass designs. I’ve collected a handful of these pieces over the years: a dress, a blazer, a vest, a scarf, and now a skirt suit. The prints are intricate, colorful, and cartoonish. There’s no rhyme or reason to them; they’re SO idiosyncratic and cool. Most of what I find online tends to be men’s shirts, blazers, and vests, but because they’re all made from slinky silk, they hang beautifully oversized and look great belted. Also, FYI, there are plenty of holiday-themed prints out there if you’re on the hunt for a unique festive fit. I LOVE this print for winter + the holidays. My favorite way to wear these silk blazers is by belting it and having it be the top. It’s slinky but a belt gives it structure and makes it easy to shape. I’d also love to see this dressed up. I can barely even sniff brown liquor without gagging so I’d feel like a fraud wearing this, but at $45 I am still very tempted.

Why Judith Ann Creations hits different

Here’s the thing: you can find a LOT of these online, but the pricing varies greatly.

• Etsy sellers will list a really good one for anywhere $600–$1,500!!!

• Meanwhile, the exact same silhouette might show up on Poshmark or Depop for $45.

This is my biggest tip: if you find one you’re obsessed with, screenshot it and do a Google Image Search. The markup differences are insane, and you can usually find a twin (or the actual same piece) for far less.

Even if you don’t plan on wearing sequins in your everyday life, I highly recommend just scrolling through these pieces for admiration. It’s like walking through a glittering archive of maximalist history. Pure dopamine!!!

I was sourcing a Dries jacquard lookalike jacket for a client last week and have been stuck on metallics, brocade, and tapestry fabrics ever since. I love how you can go full maximalist and pile on patterns with these pieces, or keep it simple and still end up with an outfit that has so much depth

Jacquard and brocade are often lumped together, but they’re technically not the same. Jacquard is the weaving method, when the patterns are weaved directly into fabric. So, lots of different fabrics can be jacquard: florals, geometrics, metallics, tone-on-tone textures. Brocade, on the other hand, is a type of jacquard, one that’s usually heavier and made to look embroidered, often with metallic threads or raised patterns.

For online resale shopping purposes, it’s smart to search both. Sellers use the words interchangeably, and you’ll get totally different results depending on which one you type in, “jacquard” might pull up more modern designer or subtle texture pieces, while “brocade” usually surfaces the old, gilded, vintage stuff. Both are worth the scroll.

Here are some of my favs I’ve found lately, and fun ways I’d style them -

FIRST, THIS 1960’S JACQUARD OVERCOAT ON ETSY

Here is an example of what I mean by going full maximalism in terms of pattern mixing with brocade. Animal print, embellishments, metallic are no prob for this jacket. Lizzie McGuire all grown up. Have I said that before? Is it obvious who my early style influences were?

NEXT, THIS DRIES VAN NOTEN BLAZER ON EBAY

On the opposite end, here is (well, my idea) of a more “simple” look, but the blazer brings in such an opulent feel. There was this pair of Dries platform boots in a very similar fabric that I tried on in Saks 2 years ago that I obviously did not buy because they were like $900 but I think about them often. Fun fact.

Speaking of Dries boots 😏, these aren’t the formerly mentioned but they are excellent, I have them styled here in a very rock and roll way, but I’d love them with a long, flowing, bohemian dress too.

NEXT, THIS 1970’S MAXI SKIRT ON ETSY

Another thing I love about these fabrics + wearing them is they always come with built-in palette inspiration. You can clash against them and it somehow still works, or just pull directly from the tones woven in. This skirt has that richness that makes everything around it feel more layered, even when the styling itself is simple.

LAST, THESE VALENTINO TROUSERS ON EBAY

I love a Jacquard pant so much. I’m obsessed with the color play here, the icy blue against the gold feels so regal but cool, and then the chocolate brown brings it back down to earth. The textures are what make it, though: the croc jacket, the brocade pant, the satin blouse, fur bag, rhinestone shoe. It’s maximalist in theory but somehow looks effortless.

In terms of what to search, try mixing and matching terms. You’ll get totally different results depending on what you use. Some good ones: “vintage brocade jacket,” “metallic jacquard,” “tapestry skirt,” “baroque pants,” “lamé,” “embossed fabric,” “ornate floral,” and “evening coat.” Search across categories too, upholstery-inspired pieces show up everywhere this time of year, from skirts to outerwear.

I mention J.Crew often, I consider myself a Stan. When Jenna Lyons left in 2017, I drifted away for a few years (to be fair, I was also 24 and no longer in a Midwest sorority). But I’ve been back on J.Crew for a while now, and I’ve found some truly great gems, both purchased in store and resale. The Jenna Lyons era J.Crew will always hold a special place in my heart. My admiration for her and her personal style started long before her underwhelming Real Housewives of New York stint. I search for pieces from that specific era on eBay and Poshmark all the time - especially this time of year. So many incredible embellished tops, sequin skirts, brooches, statement jewelry… it’s such a rich archive to dig through, and there is so much of it available, so it’s usually priced great. These are pieces I still regularly find in thrift stores, and maybe they’re even still in the back of your closet.

Here are some of the standout gems currently on my radar:

FIRST, THIS TARTAN RUFFLE SKIRT ON EBAY

I actually really want this skirt but I’m nervous I need a size up, but also I find J. Crew skirt sizing to be so random, like I have sizes 0-6. I LOVE this though, it’s totally meant for a holiday party, but I think dressing it down with a graphic tee and sneakers is so good. VERY JENNA!

NEXT, THIS RHINESTONE HOUNDSTOOTH BLAZER ON EBAY

It’s hard to see it here, but the embellished detail on the collar of this blazer is exquisite. This mix of prints is also so 2012 J. Crew Pinterest core - but this feels like a modern take. I think this is how the younger version of myself imagined the current version of myself would dress. Which I absolutely would - the person in this fit has their shit together but still knows how to have a lil fun.

THIRD, THIS EMBELLISHED SHIRT ON POSHMARK

I really like this example because 1. This shirt is on Poshmark for $30 and I’m sure it retailed for like $258, and 2. I feel like people hear J. Crew and think preppy, polished, classic - which it is, however when styled right, they can have such a different feeling. When some of their embellished pieces are styled in a way that has more of an edge, it gives me a Dries Van Noten vibe.

NEXT, THIS EMBELLISHED MIDI SKIRT ON EBAY

Ugh this skirt, I want it. You can’t tell from this image, but it has a slit up the middle front. Something about it gives me a 2000s vibe, maybe it’s the black and pink, so I think it’s fun to double down and mix in another iconic 2000s color combo - pink and brown. This is who the iconic hot pink animal print bedroom grew up to be!

LAST, THIS TAFFETA TARTAN DRESS ON POSHMARK

I just will always love this classic tartan print that J. Crew used for so many years. It screams Christmas to me. Everyone talking about their Ralph Lauren Christmas decor, how about the old J. Crew holiday collections? And this is a really exciting, modern way to wear it - go really graphic with it! You don’t have to pair it with a statement necklace (UNLESS YOU WANT….😏)

I’m telling you, if you are beginning to dreadfully looking at overpriced dresses for your holiday social schedule this year - STOP! There is a SEA of amazing J. Crew dresses, skirts, tops, sweaters, jewelry, you name it, for resale online that is absolutely perfect for the next 2 months. And it can be styled in cool, modern, edgier ways than the typical Americana polish that we’re used to seeing with J. Crew. Also, if you’ve always wanted an authentic J. Crew bubble necklace and never got one because they were $150… Your time has arrived.

Has anyone else noticed that clothes are all the same now? I have a Forever 21 sweatshirt from 2012 that I still wear and love, and a few months ago I saw the same exact one in Goodwill, but it had a Zara tag. Then, about a week later, I saw a pair of House of Harlow pants that were identical to a Zara pair I thrifted. I keep seeing people online say that restaurants now are just a competition to see which one can cook Sysco food the best, this feels adjacent to that.

All that to say: once I remembered my old Zara fringe skirt, I knew this was something I’d easily find in abundance on resale sites. It’s also was a great reminder of how cyclical fashion is, and trends moving faster than ever. Pretty much anything you see in Zara now is likely something they (+ many others) have sold in the past decade. Here is a five skirts + fun ways to wear them!

FIRST, THIS ALEXIS SKIRT ON THE REALREAL

An oversized blazer with a fringe skirt is such a good combo. I could really pair every skirt featured here with a blazer and call it a day but this Alexis skirt is the chosen one today. Seriously, what a great nighttime look! Admiring my own work.

NEXT, THIS VINTAGE 1980’S LEATHER FRINGE SKIRT ON EBAY

With fringe, in many instances if we’re dealing with leather or suede, it can feel very western - but in a good way. Pairing it with something like a rugby shirt gives the whole look this western, collegiate, sporty vibe. Threw in theses cowhide shoes to make the skirt feel a little more at home.

THIRD, THIS CEDARS SUEDE SKIRT ON ETSY

Exhibit B, for the western vibe in terms of suede and leather fringe. I really leaned into it here with the cowboy boots, this jacket gives the look a cool, downtown feel. If you took away the shirt & jacket and threw in a chambray top here, this would look like a cowgirl halloween costume, which is exactly why I love this balance.

Fringe can also be ladylike. The pale pink with the leopard trench is equally soft and flashy. This skirt, I want to say, is SS19 Jacquemus - I have a dress version of this but its black and white. It is one of my favorite things in my closet. I think I’m inspiring myself to try and wear a sweater over it so I can get this skirt look.

I’m kind of cheating here as this one is technically a belt but whatever. This is a classic outfit formula, but look how exciting it becomes when the leather fringe gets involved! Imagine walking behind someone in jeans and a trench coat and then black leather fringe starts peaking out of the bottom of the coat! I get happy thinking about that.

I actually started thrifting a few ponchos and capes last year, and it’s one of those outerwear categories I’d overlooked for years. Lately though, I’m ready to go all in. They’re dramatic, cozy, and slightly impractical, which happens to be a combination of all my favorite things when it comes to fashion.

They have this unbothered glamour to them, are perfect for transitional weather, and ideal if you want to make an outfit look more considered without actually trying harder. I found so many beautiful ones this week that it was impossible to narrow it down to five, but here’s what I came up with and how I’d style each.

FIRST, THIS VINTAGE SUEDE PATCHWORK PONCHO ON EBAY

I am still contemplating buying this!!! This patchwork suede poncho is wearable art. I love the mix of jewel tones with the brown suede skirt here, the palette feels warm, rich, and unexpected. The tall black boots give it a sleek feel, and the zebra bag ties back to the 70s energy. If I figure out how I can repair the damage, I’m putting a BID IN ON THIS ONE.

This one is ridiculous. How cute are the little crochet roses on the suede? Is cottagecore still a microtrend? Who cares. I love how it looks paired with a Gucci bag. Mixing patterns like this totally works when the scale and color story stay tight, it keeps the look playful but still intentional.

I want to drink a gin martini and then immediately Irish exit in this one. The texture, the fringe, the drama. The gold pleated skirt and patent green bag make it feel both a little ’60s, and a little disco. The more I look at it the more I think I should buy it.

I love the contrast here, the granny-square crochet poncho over a crisp blue shirt and trousers. It vaguely reminds me of when I’d have to dress “business casual” for my fake corporate jobs. If you’re an artist currently stuck selling medical devices, a vintage poncho is a great way to still feel a little like yourself whilst in your weekday trouser. You will one day be free!

If Studio 54 were in Aspen. The metallic pants and zebra mohair sweater balance the buttery faux fur poncho perfectly. It’s so much fun. Where’s Liza Minnelli.

So maybe this is your sign to venture into the poncho section, or at least stop scrolling past them. They’re dramatic without trying too hard, timeless but still weird in the best way, and they make even a simple outfit feel like so much more.

One of my favorites is a nearly floor-length mohair sweater by IB Diffusion. I found it at the thrift store a few years ago and didn’t even think twice on before I threw it in my cart. Every time I wear it on TikTok, the videos do 10x the usual views of my OOTDS, and I get why!

I have a few vintage mohair sweaters I’ve collected over the years - I love them all, and I’m always looking for more. That fuzzy, almost hazy texture makes every outfit more interesting, and it’s the coziest. With so much clothing being made from plastic these days, I’ve come to really appreciate sweaters made from real fibers. Plus, the vintage ones (especially from the ‘80s and ‘90s) come in the best colors and patterns. Some resellers know the gold mine they are sitting on and price accordingly, but there are still so many good ones out there for a steal. (Poshmark is especially good for this.)

It was hard to narrow it down to just five, but here are some of my favorite vintage mohair and chunky knit finds & how I’d style them -

FIRST, THIS 80s MOHAIR CARDIGAN ON ETSY

I love how the sweater here takes a timeless outfit formula (jeans, sweatshirt, sneakers) and elevates it into something colorful, interesting, and cool. You could also swap in a black turtleneck and loafers for a slightly less casual vibe. Or take it in the opposite direction entirely: think kooky grandma or English teacher who also subs in for the art class. It’s a versatile piece with personality, these kind of sweaters bring the outfit to life!

One of my favorite combos: deep texture with clean lines. The colors in this cardigan are so rich, and layering it over similar tones creates such a pulled-together feel. I love the subtle mix of golds and greens, and how the simple black column skirt balances the volume of the sweater.

THIRD, THIS METALLIC 80s APPLIQUE CARDIGAN ON ETSY

The boldness and texture in this sweater is sooo delightful. With pieces that are loud, colorful, and detailed like this, I sometimes like to pair them with other bold elements to balance things out. But this sweater is such a star, I wouldn’t want to take away too much of its shine!! Pulling colors from its palette and pairing it with clean, simple silhouettes is a great way to let it lead while still creating a thoughtful, styled look.

FOURTH, THIS IB DIFFUSION SWEATER COAT ON EBAY

This sweater is the same style and brand as the one I personally own and love, the quality is incredible, and honestly, it’s warm enough to double as your winter jacket. You can’t really tell from the pic, but the pants are corduroy, and the mix of mohair fuzz, corduroy, denim, and leather here makes for such a rich combination of textures. The color palette is pretty lovely too, if I do say so myself!!!

LASTLY, THIS 80s MOHAIR SWEATER COAT ON POSHMARK

Pilates princesses can wear big-ass mohair sweater jackets too! I don’t usually talk much about styling athleisure or what to wear to and from workout classes, but this is a pretty accurate glimpse into my Saturday morning walks to yoga (when there’s a chill in the air). Something vintage and colorful layered over your activewear with an interesting bag just makes you feel like a rom com 2000s gal in the big city.

While Chicago isn’t quite here yet weather-wise (so help me God), hopefully, in the next few weeks, we will be (it’s been 90 degrees for 6 months straight, I can wait another 2 weeks, but that is it). Vintage mohair is one of those things that makes getting dressed in the chilly mornings extra exciting! Whether you go oversized and dramatic or colorful and weird, a good sweater (with actual natural fibers) brings so much life to an outfit.
