looking, an old pothole on her own road.

Fifth period. She worked the altos on one chord until the seams closed and forty voices went down into one animal, and Erin stood in the middle of it where she lived.

Blend was the whole religion in that room.

*Nobody’s a hero in a chorus.*

*If I can hear you, I can find you.*

Mrs. Ledwell said these things like scripture, and Erin loved her for it—the one adult whose rules happened to be a shelter. In chorus, a person could disappear without leaving. Erin had spent four years perfecting that disappearance. She knew exactly how much of herself to give the room and exactly how much to keep.

There was a benefit on the marquee.

Mrs. Ledwell had come back in January with an inch of hair under a ball cap the dress code had quit applying to, and a left hand that sometimes landed beside the note it meant to touch. Nobody talked about it in front of her. The county was raising money the way it did for a wreck or a house fire—through casseroles, raffles, folded bills, and language broad enough to stand inside without naming the thing.

They called it a fight.

They called her brave.

They called it anything but dying.

Erin had been careful not to decide which word was true.

Mrs. Ledwell cut the chord off with her fist.

“Friday. Program order.”

She read from a yellow legal pad. Two chorus numbers, the middle-school band, a quartet from Mountain View Baptist.

Then she said, “Erin. Come get this.”

Forty heads turned.

Erin knew the turn. It had been finding her since kindergarten—the half second where the county ran its quiet arithmetic on her face and carried the one. She had built her whole life in this room to be exempt, and Mrs. Ledwell had just spent that exemption with two words.

She went down the risers.

The sheet music was already out of the folder, waiting on the piano. Her name was penciled across the top.

Never a question.

“I don’t—” Erin said.

“I know,” Mrs. Ledwell said.

It could have meant *I know you’re nervous.*

It could have meant *I know what they see when they look at you.*

It could have meant *I know you have been hiding from me too.*

Mrs. Ledwell set her left hand flat on the piano lid, as if to quiet it. Then she sang the opening line.

Full, and low, and plain, with everything scraped off it that a voice puts on to be liked.

The room quit.

Erin had heard Mrs. Ledwell sing before—scales, demonstrations, jokes in the hallway—but not like this. The voice came out of her body carrying damage and no apology for it. For one second Erin could hear the illness inside the sound, not as weakness but as a room the song had passed through.

“You’ll want to hide in it Friday,” Mrs. Ledwell said, only to her. “Everybody’s scared of a microphone the first time. That’s all that is.”

She tapped the pages.

“I’ll bet you a Bojangles’ biscuit you sing it full. Sausage. My treat.”

Scared was the wrong word.

Erin knew it the way you know your own name said wrong.

She was not afraid of the microphone. She was afraid of being correctly heard. She was afraid the county would take whatever came out of her and make it mean something she had not given permission for it to mean.

And beneath that was another fear, small and mean and impossible to confess: that Mrs. Ledwell would die before Friday and leave Erin holding the song.

The thought arrived whole.

Erin hated herself for having it.

The woman holding out the pages was wrong about her in the exact moment of choosing her. Erin wanted to correct her. She wanted to refuse. She wanted to ask whether the benefit was a promise or a goodbye.

Instead, she took the wrong word because it came with the sheet music.

“Don’t let them flatten you,” Mrs. Ledwell said, turning back to the room.

The chord started behind Erin, forty voices closing over the hole she had left.

She looked down at her name at the top of the page, written in a hand that had begun to slant.

For the first time, she wondered how much pain it had cost Mrs. Ledwell to write it.

The driveway was the only room Erin owned.

Her mama’s Corolla sat nose-to-carport, engine off, the cooling metal ticking beneath her. The sheet music rode the passenger seat the way a person would. Erin had not looked at it since Tuesday and had not stopped looking at it since Tuesday.

Eleven plays.

She counted things.

Every time, she sang half a beat behind the recorded voice, borrowing its certainty. Present and unfindable—the best trick she knew, built herself the way you build anything you cannot afford to buy.

The plan for the solo was the same plan she used for everything else.

Sing it small.

Give them the shape.

Keep the rest.

She started that way from memory. The song had been playing in some room of her life since before she could reach the counter, usually from her granddaddy’s truck radio, where all old songs sounded like they had already survived something.

Her voice went pretty.

Went smooth.

Sat down in the back pew of itself.

She stopped the track.

Mrs. Ledwell hated pretty when pretty was hiding.

Again.

Erin came in even softer.

But you could not sing this song at a whisper without the whisper turning around and looking at you. Its quiet was a fist not yet a fist. Hers was a coat. Hers was a locked car in a driveway.

Third time through, the words got in.

A thousand plays, and Erin had never once heard them.

Waiting.

Lines.

People standing in lines.

Her body knew lines.

Nine years old at the county building with her grandmother, papers held against her chest. The plastic chair pinching the backs of her legs. A television bolted high in a corner with the sound turned off. Her grandmother saying, *Don’t give them a reason,* though nobody had explained what reason or what they might give.

Erin had learned that the trick to a line was to make your face a closed door and keep it closed.

She had been so good at it.

She still was.

The song knew.

She stopped the recording and sat in the sudden quiet. A mockingbird worked through several borrowed voices in the pecan tree. Somewhere inside the house, her mama dropped a pan into the sink.

Erin looked at Mrs. Ledwell’s handwriting.

The song had been marked in pencil. *Breathe here. Don’t rush. Open vowel.* On the last page, beside the final refrain, Mrs. Ledwell had written:

*Tell it true.*

Erin rubbed her thumb across the words.

Some graphite came off on her skin.

That was the first thing that frightened her enough to cry.

Not the hospital rumors. Not the ball cap. Not the hand missing notes.

The pencil.

The fact that a person could touch paper and leave less of herself there than before.

Erin pressed her thumb harder, trying to put the gray back.

Then she took a breath from the floor of herself and let one line out at true volume.

The car could not hold it.

The sound hit the windshield and came back into her chest, hers returning to her, too large and exactly the right size. Her eyes went hot.

She sang another line.

Then another.

By the end of the verse, she was angry.

Angry at Mrs. Ledwell for hearing her.

Angry at the county for making dying into an event with a cash box.

Angry at the song for knowing anything.

Most of all, angry that somewhere beneath every note was the thought she would not let herself say:

*Do not leave me with this.*

She started over from the top.

Just her own voice coming up from under, in a parked car in Catawba County—quiet at first, the way it asks.

[DIVIDER]

The announcements came on at 8:04, the way they came on at 8:04.

Pledge first.

Then the assistant principal, who read everything in the same key—picture money, bus changes, chicken fajitas Thursday.

Third item.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Mrs. Lori Ledwell after a courageous battle with cancer. Our thoughts are with her family.”

Erin waited for the sentence to change.

For someone to say there had been a mistake. For the assistant principal to clear his throat and read the correct announcement. For Mrs. Ledwell to appear in the chorus-room doorway irritated by the whole production, ball cap crooked, saying, *Again from measure twelve.*

Fourth item.

“JV softball at Bandys. Bus departs at three-thirty.”

The hallway filled as if nothing had happened.

By the trophy case, chorus girls held on to each other, making the sound you make. Teachers stood in doorways with their arms crossed low, the way men stand at a wreck.

Erin’s body walked past all of it.

Her face did what her face did.

Closed like a door.

She had not asked it to close.

Nine years old in a plastic chair, she had built that door with her own hands, and it worked, and it worked.

She had never once wanted to be worse at something.

A girl from the soprano section touched her elbow.

“Are you okay?”

Erin almost laughed.

The question was so small and clean. It wanted an answer shaped like yes or no.

She nodded because nodding was not lying exactly.

The girl hugged her anyway. Erin held her arms straight at her sides until the girl let go.

The posters were still up in the front lobby.

Card stock, taped to the cinder block.

**A NIGHT OF SONG FOR MRS. LEDWELL.**

Friday, seven o’clock. The gymnasium. Five dollars at the door.

Across the bottom, in the biggest letters the page allowed:

**FUND HER FIGHT.**

The photograph showed Mrs. Ledwell at the upright, caught mid-phrase, one hand lifted from the keys like she was pulling something out of the floor.

Nobody had taken the posters down.

There was a lady you called about the marquee and a man you called about the scoreboard and no one you called about this.

The paper had not heard.

One corner had curled away from the wall, the tape gone gray.

Erin pressed it flat with her thumb.

She held it there until the glue took.

Then she noticed a small crescent of pencil still beneath her thumbnail.

Mrs. Ledwell’s pencil.

*Tell it true.*

Erin dug at the graphite with the nail of her other hand until the skin went red.

The bell went off above her.

She went where the building told her to go.

They held the benefit in the gym because the auditorium sat two-fifty, and by Wednesday the whole county was coming.

Nobody called it a benefit anymore, but nobody called it a funeral either.

The school had printed a new line beneath the old program title:

**IN LOVING MEMORY.**

Still, the poster stood beside the entrance.

**FUND HER FIGHT.**

Nobody had changed it—nobody whose job it was, or nobody who could stand to be the one.

Folding chairs covered the game floor. A cash box sat on a card table because money had already been collected and grief did not know how to issue refunds.

Four hundred people.

Mrs. Ledwell’s husband sat down front, a big man holding his own hands as though they belonged to someone he had been asked to keep safe.

Fourth row, a boy in a clip-on tie. Six years old. Church shoes hanging six inches off the floor.

Erin knew all of it the way you know the water is cold.

She did not let herself look twice.

The chorus went first, two numbers with a substitute teacher who counted too visibly. The altos came in late on the second piece. The F above middle C stuck, and the substitute struck it again, surprised.

Erin looked at the empty piano bench.

For half a second, grief became ridiculous.

Mrs. Ledwell was dead, and the key was still stuck.

The thought made anger rise so fast Erin nearly choked on it. The world should have been altered down to its machinery. The gym lights should have failed. The piano should have split its wooden body open. Every clock in the county should have stopped at 8:04.

Instead, the substitute lowered his hands.

The audience clapped.

Then he looked at Erin, because Mrs. Ledwell had left a program with Erin’s name on it.

Eleven steps to the microphone.

Erin counted things.

The microphone stood at the height Mrs. Ledwell had set it Tuesday of last week. No one had touched it since.

Erin made herself not understand that.

The track began.

She came in under her breath, the way it asks.

The first verse held.

Her voice went out low and did not go pretty. It went out with the paint scraped off, and the gym grew still the way a field grows still before weather.

The lines.

The waiting.

She sang what she knew, and it turned out she knew it.

She knew how to sit without moving.

She knew how to make a face into a door.

She knew what happened when a room held power over you and called your silence good behavior.

The sound rose into the dark overhead, and the void was bearable.

She had practiced for the void.

Then, coming up on the turn, Erin’s eyes did what she had ordered them not to do.

Fourth row.

The boy’s clip-on tie sat crooked against his throat. He was watching her with his mouth a little open, the way you watch weather.

And all at once the song had somewhere to go.

An address.

It was his mother’s song now.

Everything in the gym was his mother’s now—the piano, the stuck key, the legal pad, the ball cap, the handwriting, Erin’s name penciled across the top of a page.

Her voice was on its way to him and could not be called back.

The last thing Mrs. Ledwell had given Erin was moving toward the person she had left.

Erin tried to take a breath.

Instead, her knees quit.

Not a faint.

Just the body’s vote, cast without her.

She went down on both knees, hard enough to hear, the microphone still in her fist.

The gym held its breath.

Pain flashed white through her legs.

For one second she considered staying silent.

Letting the track go on without her.

Letting the whole county watch the song fail.

Part of her wanted to punish them for coming. For filling the chairs. For calling Mrs. Ledwell brave so they would not have to call her gone.

Then Erin saw the boy’s feet swing once beneath the chair.

He looked frightened.

Not of her.

For her.

She sat back on her heels on the floor of a county that had never once asked to hear her.

She lifted the microphone.

And finished the song sitting down.

Not louder.

Not triumphant.

She put her eyes on the boy’s shoes because his shoes could hold what his face could not.

The verse about the tables.

The verse that starts over.

Her voice cracked once, and she let it crack.

Another breath came ragged.

She let that stay too.

There would be no clean version now. No performance untouched by what had happened. No way to give them only the shape and keep the rest.

The grief moved through her voice without becoming beautiful.

And part of Erin—she felt it happen mid-line—climbed into the bleachers of herself and began taking notes.

*The girl who went to her knees and finished anyway.*

*The brave girl.*

*The louder girl.*

She hated the teller.

Hated how quickly pain learned to pose for its picture.

But beneath that voice was another one, quieter and more difficult, saying:

*She chose you anyway.*

Erin nearly lost the next line.

The last one went out under its own breath, the way it had come in.

Then the gym came down on her like weather.

Four hundred people rose.

Erin sat with the microphone in her lap, twelve feet from a poster still promising to fund a fight that was over.

She did not feel brave.

She felt abandoned.

She felt chosen.

The house lights came up, and the gym went back to being a gym.

The applause was twenty minutes gone, and the building had already forgotten it.

Erin stayed because her mama was coming at nine-thirty and because her hands needed a job. She folded chairs beside a custodian who said nothing except which rack.

Mrs. Ledwell’s husband stood near the free-throw line, thanking the county two people at a time in a voice with nothing left in it but manners.

The boy had taken off his shoes.

Past whatever bedtime was now, he had worked the church shoes loose under his chair. While his father thanked the county, the boy took a running start in his sock feet and slid the length of the paint.

He stood.

Ran back.

Slid again, arms out.

Nobody stopped him.

Nobody whose job that might have been, not anymore.

Every grown person arrived at the same understanding—*not going to be the one*—and looked away and let him slide.

Erin stood with a folded chair against her chest.

Three seconds of a boy crossing the gym floor in his socks.

For those three seconds he was not the dead woman’s son. He was only a boy learning what the floor would let him do.

He slid a third time and laughed.

The sound struck Erin harder than crying would have.

She had thought grief would erase everything around it. Swallow hunger, boredom, laughter, the need to move.

Instead, it made room beside itself.

That seemed crueler.

That seemed like mercy.

Then his father’s hand found his collar, gentle, and steered him toward the doors. The church shoes hung from two fingers of the other hand.

By the exit, the custodian took the poster off the easel.

He hesitated.

Then he turned it face-to-the-wall against the pads.

Erin imagined the words still there in the dark.

**FUND HER FIGHT.**

A sentence could remain wrong after everyone knew better.

In the Corolla, everything smelled the way it always smelled—the peppermint gum in the console, old french fries beneath the seat, the coconut lotion her mama used on her hands.

Her mama looked at Erin’s face.

Then at her knees.

She did not ask.

She pulled out of the lot, and her hand moved toward the radio from habit.

“Leave it off,” Erin said.

Softly.

It was the first thing she had said since the last line of the song.

They rode out into the county with the window down two inches, the dark coming in cold off the fields.

Erin’s knees ached where the floor had caught them.

She placed both palms over the bruises and felt the heat gathering beneath the skin.

Her mama drove with both hands on the wheel.

After a mile, Erin said, “She wrote my name.”

Her mama glanced over, then back at the road.

“I know, baby.”

“No,” Erin said.

Her throat tightened.

She looked out the window at the unlit fields, the fence posts appearing and disappearing in the headlights.

“She wrote it before.”

Her mama did not ask before what.

Maybe she understood.

Maybe she did not.

Erin pressed her palms harder against her knees.

The tears came without drama. No sound at first. Just heat leaving her eyes and cooling along her jaw.

She did not wipe them away.

Her mama reached across the console and laid one hand open between them.

Erin looked at it.

For several seconds, she did nothing.

Then she placed her graphite-marked thumb in her mother’s palm.

Somewhere far up in the dark of herself, the bleachers waited.

Not empty.

Not full.

Holding the shape of whoever had been there.

Outside, the county kept passing—church sign, water tower, field, field, field.

*This is fiction. Those prophets with ash on their tongues and one good curse left warm in their mouth.

Earshel died this morning, June heat on hospice glass, ninety-fucking-four years old. One short sleep past.

Sleep took him without siren, without argument, without jerking up out of the dark with one more startled wheezing, "What?"

The man who could say, "Boys, if you're gonna pull your pecker out, you better cover it up," and somehow make it scripture and county law in the same breath.

It was ninth grade, Gurley Stadium under Friday night lights, Red Devils against Blue, Jinnings and I hybrid devils of sorts. A brotherhood built at the edge of the village, Starmount out in Startown, where the first dip on the Shady Lane let you know that you made it.

Jinnings, four months older and one inch taller, Earshel's boy by blood, mine because of the long ride home. We squeezed in the second row like contraband, still young enough to think that trouble was somewhere you drove to, and not the thing riding shotgun the whole way there.

Earshel drove us home through the dark, Mavisdale blood running through his veins, Buchanan County coal country. Half of people he never had time to name, a bolo tied his throat like a man who knew exactly who he was and owed you zero proof.

The AM dial cranked Friday night football scores crackling in from every field in the region, cranked because Earshel couldn't hear. Even with an ear buried in his name, one glass eye too, but that's another story.

He taught us by respecting oncoming traffic, clicking the pedal on the floor to drop the brights, giving the other man his share of the dark.

While Red Devil sex ed was a carousel slide of gonorrhea and engorged nut sacks, the body runs and always pays. Earshel taught us that the body was a matchbook, that boys were born dragging it across brick until something caught fire, and the catch always had a catch, and the catch has bars.

Where have all the old men gone?

Grandpa Dick went first, June 22, 19 and 93, months before that falls game, and left a chair we learned to step around without admitting that it was there. Then Earshel stood near it, not in it, never tried to be blood, just close enough to keep the rain off a boy's back.

Maybe the old men didn't always have at the time the faculty, the patience (selah)

A boy needs to grow the way only safe things grow, and that's slowly. Maybe Jinnings never felt safe because his father never felt safe either. Born where he was born, raised by men, the mountains had already worn down to flint.

We stepped there anyway. We stepped there singing, setting farts on fire, driving the mower like a monster truck around the village. Where have all the old men gone?

Addiction eats the table legs. Don't dress it up in choir robes. It pawns the wedding ring, misses birthdays, sells the socket set. It lies to its mother, bleeds the sister dry, teaches the children to flinch at keys in the door.

It thins the town. It leaves the county jail lit up all night like a Waffle House for grief.

And still beneath the foil, beneath the orange bottle, beneath the court date and the tired judge reading names like headstones, there is a boy who never found safety, so he chased it. He chased anything that felt like a locked door from the inside, a vein, a pipe, a pill, a woman's soul, fool's gold, a false god, a crawl space where morning for once does not come swinging.

Where have all the old men gone?

Before the cuffs, before the charges, before the county opened its iron mouth, Jinnings sat with his daddy. I'm glad Jinnings got to see his dad, and I imagine Earshel saw it in him. Six months of breath coming back into the boy that had grown into a man. Six months of a voice not scraped down to gravel. A father knows even under morphine light, even with death folding towels at the foot of the bed, he knows his son had been held without being handled.

Then the old man took the phone and there I was, a little run, his son's accomplice, a former pastor, a heathen, a Startown boy with ash in my doctrine. And I heard the old seer say, "A man who read country the way his people read it, who knew that ground by more than its road names."

He said, "Take care of my son. Not preach to him, not save him, not fix him, not drag him clean by the hair. Take care of my son as if care were a machete you keep sharp for the dark."

And my last words to Earshel were these, "You know we're Startown boys." He grinned through the phone. You could hear it. Old men can grin without teeth, without lungs, without leaving the room. And I said, "You know what that means, don't you?" "What?" That long Southern drawl stretched out slow because trouble deserved the time it gave us to look at what we had done.

And I told him, "Startown boys won't start a fight, but we'll sure as fuck finish one." He laughed, and I became convinced that there are sacraments the church never named. A hospice laugh is one of them. Where have all the old men gone? Maybe nowhere, maybe just hangs there over Startown, not a halo, not a cure, just smoke above a struck match, just the truck idling in the dark, just enough room for two boys to squeeze in and ride home.

newsletter.jackstallings.com is a reader-supported publication. Birds stitching light through the blinds. Two days before April 15. Taxes due. Thirty days on a month-to-month to get the hell out.

Us. Harold. Latifah. Jesus. Twelve years for them. Three for us. A duplex learning how to forget our names.

I will miss the walk to camp. Miss my youngest studying that busted community watch sign, its one blind eye blurred with grit, saying, Watch out for falling meteors, Dad.

And maybe he was right.

The eye did look like a meteor. A small fire aimed at the poor in spirit.

Back inside.

So here I sit, in a country of wolves with flag pins and soft hands, chewing the cud, chewing the cud, asking the old question:

What is a man supposed to eat when even his fear has been itemized?

Outside, America keeps its altars warm. Moloch still hungry. Still taking boys who used to be boys like me— boots green as fresh bruises, heads shaved down to render obedience, sent off as an offering to smoke and diesel. A stranger.

And the VA, somewhere under fluorescent hum, still deliberates whether the body keeps what the Army gave it.

As if thunder leaves no residue. As if the body still reports for duty in the dark. As if night is not a battlefield that keeps what it kills.

Still— the birds this morning. Still the birds.

Little throats in the branches making a racket against the ledger, against the notice taped to the door, against the slow machinery of removal.

And my son, with his meteor gospel, teaching a worn-out sign to burn again. That may be all the mercy we get:

one child, one wrong name for a thing, and suddenly the world remembers it is falling.

— Jack Stallings, April 13, famous there.
Because that’s what the sky was.

And when the mills shut down, the lights went with them.
What came back wasn’t prosperity.

It was darkness.
The old kind.
The kind that lets you see.

There are things you learn early in a place like that.

Not because anyone sits you down and teaches you.
Because no one does.

You learn how to listen for what isn’t being said.
You learn how to read a room before you ever learn how to leave one.
You learn which parts of yourself make people comfortable
and which parts get quiet real fast.

I don’t remember anyone saying it out loud.

I just remember understanding.

At night, the sky opened up like it had something to prove.

More stars than one county had any right to hold.
The kind of sky that makes you feel small
and seen
at the same time.

I used to stand out there longer than I needed to.
Long enough for the noise of the house to fade behind me.
Long enough to feel like whatever I was becoming
might have somewhere else to go.

I didn’t have the language for it then.

Just the feeling that there was more
and the suspicion that I wasn’t going to find it by staying still.

Some places name you before you’re old enough to refuse the name.

Startown gave me mine early.

Quiet.
Watchful.
Careful with what I said and even more careful with what I didn’t.

The kind of boy who could feel the shift in a room
before anyone else noticed it.

The kind of boy who learned how to carry things
without asking where they came from.

I left when I could.

Or at least, I thought I did.

I’ve gone back more times than I expected to.
Not always in person.
But in the ways memory doesn’t ask permission.

In the way certain silences still feel familiar.
In the way I still catch myself choosing the version of me
that makes the room easier to hold.

I’ve spent most of my life trying to decide
which parts of that place were mine
and which parts were just handed to me
before I knew I could say no.

And I’m still not convinced the Sam Taylor opened one eye. The midday sun sliced through the warped blinds of his bedroom, hitting the uncorked bourbon bottle on the nightstand before searing into his retina. It was a blaring, clinical whiteness—the kind that demands an accounting of the night before. He didn’t need to look at the calendar to know the date. He could feel the tilt of the earth in the headache pulsing behind his eyes. The Winter Solstice was over, but the darkness hadn’t left the room.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

The sound was sharp, confident, and rhythmic. It wasn’t the hesitant scratch of his mother; it was the percussion of someone who had nothing to hide.

“I know you’re in there, Samuel. I can smell the regret from the hallway.”

Sam groaned, swinging his legs over the edge of the mattress. The floorboards were cold. He rubbed his face, his palms scraping against twenty‑four hours of stubble. He felt like a crime scene—evidence of a disaster left unsecured.

He opened the door.

Ava stood there. She looked infuriatingly healthy. It was her forty‑third birthday, and she wore her three years of sobriety like a tailored suit—clean lines, clear eyes, no static. She held a travel mug of black coffee in one hand and a set of car keys in the other.

“You look like shit,” she said. She didn’t say it with judgment; she said it with the cheeky affection of a sister who had already survived her own wreckage. She was the Porch Light—the one who kept the light on so you didn’t have to knock to come home.

“Happy Birthday, Ava,” Sam croaked. His voice sounded like gravel and ash.

“Shower,” she commanded, handing him the coffee. “Mom is expecting us. And I’m not driving a distillery to her house.”

An hour later, the kitchen at their mother’s house smelled of cinnamon, nutmeg, and the humid, heavy warmth of an oven that had been running all morning. It was a Red Clay warmth—domestic, suffocating, and old.

June Taylor sat at the head of the table, a glass of Chardonnay already poured near her hand. She looked frail, her edges softened by the same avoidance that had defined her life since 1999—the year the system finally finished chewing up the men in this house.

In the center of the table sat the pumpkin pie.

It was the Taylor family liturgy. Not cake. Pie. It was the tradition Caleb had loved most, the only thing that tasted the same in 2025 as it had in 1995.

Sam took a bite. The texture was dense, sweet, and cloying. It stuck to the roof of his mouth. He swallowed hard, trying to push down the nausea that hovered at the back of his throat—not just from the hangover, but from the physics of the room.

There were four sides to the table. Only three were occupied.

The fourth chair, to Sam’s right, was empty. It had been empty for twenty‑four years, but today, the space felt wider. It was the space Caleb used to fill with noise, with Whitman quotes, with the chaotic energy of a boy who refused to be heavy. Caleb was a Summer Solstice child—one of the “brothers” who burned too bright for a world built on “blood making the green grass grow.”

At the other end, the ghost of their father hovered—the man who worked until his back broke, then drank until his heart stopped. A casualty of layoffs and cheap pine, a man who loved the changing seasons but couldn’t survive the winter.

“It’s good, Mom,” Ava said, breaking the silence. She tapped her fork against the plate, a metronome of the living. “Forty‑three. Can you believe it? The days are supposed to be getting longer now, right?”

“Winter Solstice was yesterday,” June murmured, staring into her wine. “The darkest day is over.”

Sam gripped his fork until his knuckles turned white. The darkest day wasn’t over. The summer children were gone, chewed up by the machinery, and only the winter children—the ones who knew how to freeze—were left at the table.

He could still feel the phantom weight of the medical bag he didn’t have. He could feel the vibration of the text message hidden in his pocket—the one he hadn’t read, the one Ava already knew about.

The bag. The Quiet Room. The boy with the tattoo.

“Sam?” Ava’s voice was softer now. She wasn’t looking at him with the humor of the morning. She was looking at him with the devastatingly real gaze of a woman who knows that sobriety is just a fancy word for looking at the things that hurt. “You okay?”

Sam looked at the empty chair. He looked at the pie. He took a breath—an intake.

“I’m fine,” he lied. “Just tired.”

The lie hung in the air, heavy and sweet, masking the tremor that was already starting in his hands.

CONSTRICTION

Sunday, December 21, 2025

The memory didn’t come in a straight line. It came in flashes, strobe‑lit by the red emergency lights of the rig.

Sixteen hours before the pumpkin pie, Sam was on his knees in the back of Unit 4. The world was a vibrating box of steel and diesel fumes. Maria Martinez was driving like she was running from g-d, throwing the ambulance around the curves of Old 321.

On the stretcher lay Emmett “Jake” Flynn. Seventeen years old. Blue lips. Pinpoint pupils. The classic, tragic architecture of an opioid overdose.

“Sam! We’re two minutes out!” Maria yelled from the front. Her voice was tight. She couldn’t see what Sam saw, but she could feel it. The air in the back was too heavy. It was pressurized.

Sam wasn’t alone with the boy.

The Whisperer was there.

It wasn’t a ghost in a white sheet. It was a frequency. A high‑pitched, grinding static that sat at the base of Sam’s skull. It was the voice of the Effective Person demanding a miracle. It was the voice of his father, sober enough to judge but too drunk to help.

Push, Sam. Be the Ghost. Fix it.

Sam locked his elbows. He threw his weight down. One. Two. Three. Four.

The boy’s chest had no resistance. It was spongy, hollow. Sam was pumping oxygen into a system that had already shut down the factory.

He looks like him, the Whisperer hissed. It sounded like a truck door slamming. Look at the hair. Look at the jaw. It’s Caleb. You dropped him. Pick him up.

“Shut up,” Sam grunted, sweat stinging his eyes.

He pressed harder. He was trying to manually force the heart to beat, trying to bully the biology into submission. This was his Ministry of Control. If he pumped hard enough, if he was competent enough, he could reverse the entropy. He could make the Winter Solstice turn into summer.

Sam reached for the boy’s wrist to check for a rhythm.

He froze.

There, on the inside of the pale forearm, right over the radial artery where the life should have been fluttering, was a tattoo. It was crude, black ink. A paper airplane.

The sight of it constricted Sam’s throat like a physical hand. The air left the ambulance. It was the same symbol. The symbol of the boy who fell. The symbol of the gravity Sam couldn’t defeat.

Don’t look at it, the Whisperer screamed. Save him! Be the hero!

Sam looked at the boy’s face. He didn’t see a patient. He saw a mirror. He saw the cost of twenty years of trying to be a “Savior” to avoid being a brother. He saw that saving Jake wouldn’t save Caleb. It would just be another performance. Another magic trick to hide the rot.

Push! the Whisperer commanded. Don’t you dare stop.

Sam leaned forward, driven by the compulsion, the “sprint mode” of trauma. He thrust his palms down with everything he had left—the desperation, the shame, the fear.

CRACK.

The sound was wet and sharp. A rib gave way under the force. It felt like wet drywall.

It wasn’t the sound of life returning. It was the sound of something breaking that couldn’t be fixed.

Sam stopped. His hands hovered over the boy’s chest. The constriction in his own chest was absolute. His heart hammered against his ribs—an erratic, terrified bird.

“Sam?” Maria called out. The siren wailed, a long, dying note. “Do you have a pulse?”

Sam looked at the paper airplane. It wasn’t flying. It was grounded. He looked at the boy. He looked at the empty space where the miracle was supposed to be.

The Whisperer screamed a final, violent obscenity, then went eerily silent.

Sam sat back on his heels. He wiped his mouth. “No,” Sam whispered. “He’s gone.”

The rig hit a pothole, but Sam didn’t brace himself. The Ghost had finally failed. The cracks were no longer quiet.

SURGE

Sunday, December 21, 2025 (23:45)

The Quiet Room was meant for families to receive bad news, not for this.

Sam didn’t ask Vivienne. He didn’t seduce her. He steered her by the elbow, his grip tight enough to bruise, moving her down the hallway away from the blaring lights of the trauma bay. The door had barely latched behind them before he was on her.

This wasn’t intimacy. It was an extraction.

The Whisperer was a roar now, drowning out the beep of the cardiac monitors down the hall. Numb it, Sam. Burn it out. Use the friction to kill the picture of the boy.

He pressed her against the wall. His hands were frantic, trembling with a volatile energy that felt less like desire and more like a seizure. He reached for the drawstring of her scrubs. He pulled hard—too hard. The sound of the fabric snapping tight against her waist was sharp, violent.

“Sam, wait—” Vivienne’s voice was breathless, but not in the way he wanted.

He didn’t wait. He couldn’t. He needed the dopamine hit. He needed to override the brakes of his grief with the gas of aggression. He needed to bury himself in her until he forgot the sound of Jake’s ribs cracking. He was trying to apply the theology of friction without the sanctuary.

He yanked her scrub bottoms down, his breathing ragged, his eyes squeezed shut against the reality of the room.

“Sam! Stop.”

Vivienne didn’t shove him. She caught his wrists. Her grip was shocking—not because it was strong, but because it was absolute.

Sam stumbled, his eyes snapping open. The room spun. “What? Viv, come on, I just need—”

“Look at me.”

She held his wrists against the wall. She wasn’t trembling. She stood in the center of his chaos like a stone in a stream. Her scrubs were a deep, earthy brown—Umber—not the clinical blue of the rest of the staff. She smelled of ozone and antiseptic, the scent of a storm that had already passed.

She stared into his face, searching for the man she called The Ghost—the partner who understood the difference between friction and fire. The man who knew how to turn pain into a safe harbor.

She didn’t find him.

“Your eyes,” she whispered. She didn’t look scared; she looked disappointed. “My g-d, Sam. Look at your eyes.”

Sam blinked, confused, the adrenaline vibrating in his teeth. “What about them?”

“They’re hollow,” she said, the judgment landing like a physical blow. “Selfish. You aren’t even here. You’re just… feeding.”

She released his wrists and stepped back, pulling her scrubs up with a dignity that made him feel small.

“You aren’t trying to feel me, Sam. You’re trying to fuck the silence away. And I am not your drug.”

She saw it. She saw the predator. She saw the Effective Person trying to use her body to fix his failure. She saw the unhinged reality of a man who had no Emotional Autonomy left.

“Vivienne, please,” Sam said, reaching for her. The Competent Protector collapsed instantly into the anxious child. He was terrified of the silence she was about to leave him in.

She didn’t flinch. She just looked at his outstretched hand like it was a weapon he didn’t know how to unload.

“You’re dangerous, Sam,” she said. “Not because you’re strong. But because you’re empty.”

She opened the door. The hospital sounds rushed in—sterile, indifferent, loud.

She walked out.

Sam stood alone in the center of the room. The surge of adrenaline had nowhere to go. It curdled inside him, turning into a toxic, vibrating panic. He looked at the empty vinyl recliner. He looked at his hands.

The friction hadn’t worked. The fire hadn’t started. All that was left was the ash.

BREAK

Sunday, December 21, 2025 (Midnight)

The door to the Quiet Room clicked shut. The sound was small, mechanical, final.

Sam stood in the center of the room, his chest heaving, the air still thick with the violence of his own need. Vivienne was gone. She hadn’t run; she had retreated, stepping back from him as if he were a contagion. Her words hung in the silence, not angry, just clinical—a diagnosis he couldn’t intubate his way out of.

Hollow. Selfish.

He looked down. His hands were shaking. Not the adrenaline tremor of a code blue, but the weakness of a man whose sugar had bottomed out.

On the vinyl recliner sat his medical bag.

It was heavy cordura, bright red, packed with the tools of his priesthood: Narcan, laryngoscopes, gauze, epinephrine. For twenty years, that bag had been his vestment. When he held it, he wasn’t Sam Taylor, the boy who hid under headphones while his father drank. He was The Ghost. He was the man who cheated death. He was the Competent Protector.

Now, looking at it, he saw only a prop.

The Whisperer’s voice rose in his ear, no longer seductive, just tired. Pick it up, Sam. Fix it. Go find her. Explain. Don’t let them see you bleed.

Sam reached for the handle. His fingers hovered inches from the nylon strap.

He couldn’t touch it. If he picked up the bag, he had to be The Ghost. He had to go back out there and perform the miracle. He had to pretend that saving Jake Flynn’s life would have somehow paid the debt for Caleb’s death. But Jake was dead. The tattoo on the boy’s wrist was zipped inside a black bag. And Vivienne had seen the monster behind the paramedic’s mask.

Sam pulled his hand back.

He turned to the door. He didn’t walk; he bolted.

He left the bag on the chair.

He burst through the double doors of the Emergency Room entrance, ignoring the startled look of the triage nurse. The automatic glass sliders hissed open, and the night hit him like a shovel.

It was the Winter Solstice. The longest night. The air was frigid, tasting of dry ice and diesel.

Sam ran.

He didn’t head for his truck. He ran toward the perimeter of the parking lot, past the ambulance bay where his rig sat cooling, past the smoking area where families bargained with g-d. He hit the pavement of the service road and didn’t stop.

This was the old reflex. The deep‑seated muscle memory from 1999. When the shouting started in the kitchen, when his father’s voice turned into glass breaking, Sam ran. He and Caleb used to run until their lungs burned, thinking they could outpace the genealogy of anger.

Run until you fix it. Run until you feel clean.

He sprinted into the dark, his breath tearing at his throat. He ran until the lights of the hospital were a blurred smear of red and white behind him. He ran until the “lightning in his legs” fired—the lactic acid building up, screaming for oxygen.

But the cold was relentless. It bit through his thin uniform shirt, finding the sweat on his back, turning it to ice.

His boot caught a patch of black ice near the edge of the access road. Sam went down hard. His knees slammed into the asphalt. The impact jarred his teeth, biting his tongue. Copper filled his mouth.

He stayed there. On his hands and knees in the dark.

He waited for the instinct to rise. The instinct to assess the injury, to stand up, to brush off the grit, to organize the chaos.

It didn’t come.

He looked at his empty hands. No bag. No gloves. No brother.

For the first time in twenty‑four years, the silence wasn’t waiting to be filled by his competence or his failure. It stretched out in all directions, indifferent and wide. Somewhere beyond the sodium glow of the hospital, a freight train moaned low and long, the sound of leaving that never finished leaving.

Sam wiped the grit from his palms. He didn’t stand up. He just bled into the snow.

FLATLINE

December 25, 2025 – January 5, 2026

The days did not get longer.

Technically, the Winter Solstice was past, but inside the house on Keswick Avenue, the light seemed to have stalled. It was the “Twelve Days of Christmas”—a suspended animation between the birth of a savior and the arrival of the Epiphany.

For Sam, it was a flatline.

There were no tones dropping. No pager beeping. No red bag. The Ghost was dead, left behind on a vinyl chair in the Quiet Room. Without the adrenaline of the “Sprint Mode” to sustain him, Sam fell into the wilderness.

The silence of the house was absolute. It wasn’t the peaceful silence of rest; it was the heavy, pressurized silence of a library or a tomb. It was the sound of a man finally sitting still enough to hear his own blood.

Sam sat at the kitchen table. Spread out before him was the artifact he had retrieved from his mother’s nightstand: Caleb’s Journal.

It was a composition notebook, the cardboard cover peeling, the pages yellowed by twenty‑four years of grief. The texture of the paper felt brittle under Sam’s fingertips, like dried leaves.

He read.

He didn’t read to solve a mystery. He read to survive the silence.

Page after page, Caleb’s handwriting—jagged, energetic, alive—dismantled Sam’s history.

For two decades, Sam had believed The Whisperer was a superpower. He believed it was a dark gift that made him the Competent Protector. But as he read Caleb’s account of August 28, 1999—the day their father died—the clarity was unwanted and devastating.

Dad came home drunk… Sam hid. He put on his headphones. I went down to fight him.

Sam stopped reading. The realization hit him in the gut. The Whisperer wasn’t a ghost. It wasn’t magic. It was just his father’s voice. It was his mother’s anxiety disguised as love. It was the small town’s demand for control.

Sam hadn’t been “saving” people for twenty years. He had been apologizing for hiding in his room while Caleb took the black eye. His entire career was a penance that no amount of CPR could pay.

He pushed the journal away. The “Effective Person” crumbled. He was just a forty‑three‑year‑old man sitting in a cold kitchen, broken, busted, and dry.

A splash of color on the table caught his eye.

It was a condolence card, postmarked three days ago. The handwriting on the envelope was an elegant, looped script that hadn’t changed since high school.

Ms. Eleanor Vance.

She hadn’t written a sermon. She hadn’t sent a Bible verse. Ms. Vance never provided answers; she only provided questions. Inside, there was a single line from Whitman, and a short personal note:

To the boy who stayed, and the boy who flew. Gravity is not the only law. – E.V.

Sam stared at the card. The boy who flew.

He pulled the journal back. He turned to the final entry. The date was June 20, 2002. The day before the fall.

The handwriting was different here—calmer, spaced out. Caleb wasn’t writing about fighting their dad or the noise of the town. He was writing about the tower.

I went up there alone this morning, Caleb wrote. The sun comes up differently when you aren’t afraid of the drop. I’m not going to slip, Sam. I’m going to launch. Like a paper airplane. Fathomless.

The room seemed to tilt. The “void” expanded.

Sam read the line again. I’m not going to slip.

All these years, Sam had carried the guilt of a tragic accident. He thought gravity had stolen his brother. But Caleb hadn’t fallen. He had climbed the tower to fly.

The silence of the house was no longer empty. It was vibrating with the truth Sam had been too busy performing to hear. The Ghost was gone, but for the first time, the brother was real.

Sam closed the journal. He looked at the window. The dark was finally starting to break.

Tomorrow was Epiphany. He knew where he had to go.

REVERB

Tuesday, January 6, 2026 (Epiphany Morning)

The old fire tower did not welcome visitors. It stood ninety feet above the tree line, a skeleton of galvanized steel and rot, vibrating in the January wind.

Sam parked his 1972 Chevy at the base. The engine ticked—a cooling metal heartbeat in the silence.

He stepped out. The cold was different here. It wasn’t the sterile, air‑conditioned cold of the hospital morgue. It was frigid, dry cold—wild, indifferent, and biting. It tasted of iron and ozone.

Sam looked up. The tower swayed slightly against the gray dawn.

He began to climb.

Clang. Clang. Clang.

His boots on the metal stairs created a rhythm that echoed through the valley. A reverb. With every step, the sound mimicked the timeline of his fracture.

Step 10: his father’s truck door slamming in 1999—the Red Devil anger of a man who worked until his back broke and drank until his heart stopped.

Step 30: the gavel-snap of his paramedic license, the day he decided competence could outrun grief.

Step 50: the wet crack of Jake Flynn’s ribs beneath his hands.

The higher he climbed, the louder the memories became. Not images—commands. Cadence. The kind that could make a boy feel safe because it told him exactly what to be.

His jaw tightened. His tongue wanted to form the words before his brain could stop it.

Blood makes the green grass grow.

The Whisperer didn’t need to shout. It just kept time inside his chest.

Kill the weakness, Sam. Be useful. Be hard. You’re too heavy to fly.

Rust flaked off the handrails, staining Sam’s palms. It was the color of dried blood—Red Clay and old iron.

He reached the platform.

The wind hit him full force, stripping away the warmth of the cab, the smell of the bourbon, the pretenses of his life. He was exposed. He walked to the eastern edge, the place where the sun would rise, the place where the drop was sheer.

He looked down at his hands. They were trembling, stained with rust. He remembered looking at Jake’s wrist. The pale skin. The blue veins. The black ink.

The Paper Airplane.

Sam gripped the wooden railing to steady himself. The wood was rough, grayed by twenty‑four years of winter. His thumb brushed against a groove in the timber. A texture that didn’t belong to the grain.

He looked down.

There, etched into the wood with the deep, jagged pressure of a pocketknife, was the echo.

CALEB.

And beside it, the twin of the tattoo on Jake’s wrist: a paper airplane.

The story snapped shut. The beginning and the end collided. Jake hadn’t just been a random overdose; he was a mirror. Caleb hadn’t slipped; he had stood right here.

The reverb deafened him. The symbol wasn’t about death. It was about flight. It was about the terrifying, fathomless choice to launch.

Sam traced the carving. The cold wood bit into his skin. He wasn’t the Ghost anymore.

He was just the brother who had taken twenty‑four years to climb the stairs.

FLICKER

Tuesday, January 6, 2026 (Sunrise)

The air at ninety feet was different. It didn’t smell like the earth or the pine needles below. It smelled like iron and ozone.

Sam stood on the metal grating of the fire tower, his knuckles white against the railing. It was the morning of Epiphany. The sun hadn’t broken the horizon yet; the world was trapped in that Velvet Dusk between the night and the day.

Below him, his Chevy pickup looked like a toy, a speck of red rust in the gray woods.

The wind kept talking.

Not in words at first. In cadence. In that old marching rhythm that lived behind his ribs—the one that made a boy feel safe because everyone else was moving the same direction.

Sam reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a torn rectangle of paper—EMS carbon copy, the corner ripped ragged where the clipboard had caught it. The kind of paper meant to live in a file drawer until somebody sued.

His fingers were numb, stupid with cold. He flattened it against the railing anyway. The metal shivered under his hands.

His jaw clenched so hard his molars hurt. He could taste copper from the Quiet Room, the cracked rib, the asphalt. He could feel his hands on a chest that wouldn’t take life, as if his palms had become a kind of prayer the world no longer honored.

He wrote anyway.

Three words. Block letters. A child’s handwriting trapped inside a forty‑three‑year‑old wrist.

I AM SORRY.

The ink bled, then stiffened—the cold turning confession into a bruise.

He capped the pen. His throat tightened with the old instinct: perform, fix, outrun.

Behind him, the ladder waited—rungs slick with frost, a way down that did not require faith. In front of him, the drop opened like a mouth.

Then he saw the groove again.

Not just the name. The pressure of it. How hard the knife had been driven into wood. As if the boy carving it was trying to leave a fingerprint deep enough to outlive gravity.

CALEB.

And beside it—the plane.

Sam stared until the tower stopped being a tower and became what it had always been: a place where the world asked a boy to choose between silence and flight.

He couldn’t have saved him.

Not because he failed.

Because it wasn’t an accident that needed a hero.

Sam looked at the paper in his hand. Looked at the words like they were a body he’d been trying to resuscitate for twenty‑four years.

Transform it, the memory of Ms. Vance whispered—not a command, a dare. Revision.

He folded the paper with the same precision he used to wrap gauze around someone else’s bleeding. Center crease. Corners aligned. Wings smoothed down until the thing had a spine.

The sun broke the ridge like a match struck in a cold room. Light hit the frost and made it glitter—rust turned briefly to gold, blood pretending to be holy.

Sam stepped to the edge.

The Whisperer rose, frantic now, wanting its old story back.

Jump. Prove you loved him. Pay it with your body.

Sam exhaled. A white cloud left his mouth. The simplest proof of all.

“Fly,” he said—not to the plane, but to the boy who’d carved the wood and left the world holding its breath.

He released it.

For a second it dropped—heavy with everything he’d written on it.

Then the updraft caught the wings.

The plane tipped once, as if reconsidering, and lifted—white against the bruise‑blue morning—spiraling out over the tree line toward the thin seam of sunrise.

Sam watched until it became a fleck. A flicker. A refusal.

His fingers hovered in the air where it had been, shaking—not from fear this time, but from the effort of not turning pain into performance.

He leaned forward until the balls of his feet kissed the edge.

Behind him: the ladder, the rungs, the life he knew how to live.

Ahead of him: the fathomless.

Sam closed his eyes.

And for one holy second, he did nothing at all—no fixing, no running—just breath in his lungs and wind on his face, learning the difference between gravity and law.

Thanks for reading Taste & See Jack! Chickasaw Squaw.

As years spun by, those cliffs whispered still,
like little league dreams—
bolts of lightning,
crashing horizons, shaken with fear, and the thrill of violence—

a live wire with reckless abandon,
running high on the gas of new dreams,
against dark crimson skies, colliding.

Rocky and Cinderella, in a world of desperate odds,
sacrificing themselves to gods and magicians—
preachers and politicians,
shaping the destiny of the damned,
promising provision to the poor.

Unwilling to see—we all
