On Sunday, Sept. 6, the Kokomo Park Band will conclude its season-long celebration, “America at 250,” at Highland Park with a concert titled “America: Melting Pot—The Spirit of the Nation.” This special Labor Day weekend performance highlights the diverse cultural tapestries, immigration stories, and varied traditions that have shaped the American spirit over the last two and a half centuries.

Admission is completely free, thanks to sponsor Encompass Credit Union. The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. and features celebrated saxophonist Cecily Terhune and vocalist Sally Duke.

The program is hosted by the Kokomo Parks Department, with support from the Allen Whitehill Clowes Foundation, Center Township, the Community Foundation of Howard County, The Arts Federation, and the Indiana Arts Commission.

Much of the evening’s repertoire was originally planned for the June 10 concert, most of which was rained out. The music reflects the rich global influences that define the American experience. Audiences will enjoy Star Puzzle by Soichi Konagaya, Dublin Dances by Jan Van Der Roost, and Pierre La Plante’s nostalgic American Riversongs.

The band will also showcase the energetic rhythms of Scott Watson’s Balkan Seven, Floyd Werle’s lively Fandango, and evocative Symphonic Dances from Fiddler on the Roof (composed by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock, with symphonic scoring by Ira Hearshen and arrangement by Warren Barker).

A major centerpiece of the evening is Earl Hagen’s sultry classic Harlem Nocturne (arranged by the late Steve Rhodes, former KPB conductor), which spotlights saxophonist Cecily Terhune.

Terhune has appeared several times on baritone saxophone for KPB’s Big Band Night and was the KPB Student Solo Competition Winner in 2016. An Indianapolis native, she currently teaches private lessons at Carmel and Noblesville High Schools alongside managing her private studio. She performs regularly as a soloist and as a member of Audiodacity, the Sean Imboden Large Ensemble, the Urban Renewal Big Band, and the Hood/Terhune Duo.

Her recent highlights include a European tour with the Ball State Jazz Lab Ensemble across Poland and the Czech Republic, a solo recital at Mukogawa Women’s University in Osaka, Japan, two solo performances at the Chautauqua Institution in New York, and concerto appearances with both the Ball State Symphony Orchestra and the Kokomo Park Band. With Audiodacity, she has played major festivals including Summer Camp, Mile of Music, Resonance, Livestock, and Good People Good Times.

Terhune holds a Master’s degree in Music Performance from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, as well as a Bachelor’s degree and Artist Diploma from Ball State University, where she served as the jazz department assistant under director Mark Buselli. She is a recipient of the Brian Minor Memorial Saxophone Scholarship, the Tom Shah Memorial Jazz Scholarship, and the Presser Music Scholarship.

The stage will also welcome back acclaimed local vocalist Sally Duke, a Greentown resident and experienced tour escort. She will deliver a deeply moving performance of the iconic showstopper “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Misérables, featuring a lush arrangement by Michael Brown.

Duke brings a distinct blend of global adventure and deep local roots to the stage. An accomplished Christian vocalist, she has performed widely across national and international stages, and her voice is featured on nine recordings. Locally, she is a popular recurring performer in Greentown’s Music at the Fairgrounds concert series.

Every effort is made to hold concerts outdoors; however, in the event of inclement weather, the performance will relocate to the Northwestern School Auditorium. Rain-site decisions are generally made after 5:00 PM on concert day, with updates published on Facebook and available via a recorded line at 765-319-8554.

Swift Observatory discussed at IU Kokomo

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what is hiding beyond the stars?

Community members and students will have the chance to explore the universe during the IU Kokomo Observatory Open House beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday, September 13, hosted by Patrick Motl, professor of physics. The event will allow visitors to learn more about a NASA spacecraft to some of the most fascinating objects visible in the night sky.

The evening will begin with a presentation about NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. For more than 21 years, it has helped scientists observe some of the universe’s most powerful and mysterious events. Motl will discuss Swift’s mission, its possible future re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere and efforts to boost the spacecraft into a higher orbit.

The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory was originally designed to operate for only about two years, yet it has spent more than 21 years exploring some of the universe’s most extreme and mysterious events.

Swift was designed to quickly detect gamma-ray bursts, which are incredibly powerful explosions that can release enormous amounts of energy in a matter of seconds. These bursts can occur when massive stars collapse or when extremely dense objects collide in space. Over the course of its mission, Swift has helped scientists observe and better understand these distant cosmic events, proving that even a spacecraft expected to have a relatively short mission can continue making discoveries for decades.

After the presentation, visitors may have the opportunity to see Saturn and explore objects from the summer constellations, including the Ring Nebula and Albireo, a striking double star known for its contrasting colors.

The IU Kokomo Observatory is home to two impressive telescopes mounted together: a six-inch Takahashi refracting telescope and a 16-inch Meade reflecting telescope. The Takahashi provides a sharp view of planets, while the larger Meade telescope collects more light, allowing observers to see fainter and more distant objects in space.

Observation will continue through 10 p.m., weather permitting.

Additional open houses during the 2026-2027 academic year include from 8 to 10 p.m. October 11, March 14, April 11, and May 16; and from 7 to 9 p.m. November 8, December 13, January 10, and February 14.

The Observatory is at 2660 S. Washington Street. Free parking is available on campus.

Chariot to hold blood drives

This summer, the American Red Cross declared the second-ever national blood supply crisis. To help combat this crisis, Chariot Automotive Group (CAG) will host two blood drives in September and December at their Button Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership in Kokomo.

The blood drives will take place Thursday, Sept. 17, and Thursday, Dec. 17.

CAG has hosted seven community blood drives at the Button dealership over the past couple of years. These events bring community members together to help support local hospitals and patients in need through lifesaving blood donations.

Bernadette Ann “Bernie” Morris, aged 87, of Kokomo, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her devoted family, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Born on March 16, 1939, in South Bend, Indiana, Bernie was the cherished daughter of Lamiel and Martha (Weber) Kline. On April 22, 1995, she wed Thomas D. Morris and shared a loving marriage with him until his death on May 16, 2012.

A 1957 graduate of Stephenson High School in Michigan, Bernie spent the last 15 years of her career at American Tool and Party Rental in Kokomo, working as a seamstress and customer assistant, retiring in 2007. Before that she had worked at J.C. Penney in Kokomo. A faithful Catholic, she actively participated in St. Patrick Church’s community, contributing to the Prayer Shawl ministry, hospitality, Haiti Ministry, choir, and volunteering at the church library. She was also a proud member of the sewing guild.

Bernie leaves behind a loving family: her children Cecilia Dillman (Steve) of Sharpsville, Michelle LaCluyse (DJ) of Kokomo, Ted Goodman (Lawona) of Farmland, and Teresa “Teri” Nichols (Bob) of Tipton. Bernie’s grandchildren are Elizabeth Acord (Cole), Aaron Nichols (Vanessa), Tom Nichols (Robin), Dave Nichols (Marissa), Olivia Myers (Mike), Dakota Goodman (Destiny), and Sierra Hobbs (Tyler). She is also survived by several great-grandchildren. Her siblings include Joan Clark (Gerald) of Menominee, Michigan, and Geralyn Williams (Tom) of Menominee, Michigan.

Bernie was preceded in death by her husband Tom; a son Michael Morris; siblings Claudes Kline, Theresa Thoune, Celeste Kline, Rita Wery, and Marian Ruth; and a great-granddaughter Marian Nichols.

A Mass of Christian Burial to honor Bernie’s life will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Kokomo on Tuesday, September 8, at 12:00 noon, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at IOOF Cemetery in Rochester at 3:00 p.m.

Don Eugene Martin

Don Eugene Martin, 80, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away at 10:12 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born on August 24, 1946, in Kokomo, Indiana, to Carl and Mary (Thompson) Martin.

Don was a 1964 graduate of Western High School and attended Indiana University Kokomo, where he studied law enforcement. He served his country in the United States Army, achieving the rank of SP4.

Throughout his life, Don was known for his strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. He worked as a police officer, including service in Junction City, with the Kokomo Police Department as its first K-9 officer, and with the Howard County Sheriff’s Department (34-77). In the late 1970s, he founded Marmack Cabinets with his brother. He was also a Beretta dealer, operated a snow removal business, and served as Harrison Township Trustee for four years.

Don is survived by his children Stacey Martin, Brady (Star) Martin, and Kira (Dana) Crosby; grandchildren Braden Martin, Brooklyn Martin, Beau Crosby, and Maverick Crosby; many cousins whom he loved like brothers and sisters; and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Steve Martin.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E Main Street, Russiaville, IN. Ronald “Ron” Ray Frakes II

Ronald “Ron” Ray Frakes II, 47 years old, of Kokomo, passed away Monday, August 17, 2026, at his home. He was born in Kokomo, IN, on December 5, 1979, the son of Ronald Ray Frakes and Nancy (Byers) Pyke.

Ron attended Eastern School Corporation. He recently held employment with construction companies. He was skilled at fixing up cars and working with his hands. Ron had a heart of gold and would help anybody who was in need, no matter what. He was the most dependable guy. Ron liked spending time outdoors. He adored his German Shepherd named Loco. who he took everywhere with him.

He is survived by his dad Ron Frakes; sister Lisa (Jerry) McLay; nephews and niece Blake Greenway, Thomas Greenway, and Elizabeth McLay; great-nephew Shawn Greenway; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mom Nancy Pyke; his grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.

Justin Richard Parker

Justin Richard Parker, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away suddenly on August 29, 2026, while doing something he truly loved, riding his motorcycle. Born on November 6, 1985, Justin lived his life with passion, loyalty, strength, and a deep love for the people closest to him.

Justin proudly served his country in the United States Army for 12 years, completing four tours overseas. He served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and retired at the rank of Staff Sergeant. His years of service reflected the courage, determination, and commitment that were such a large part of who he was.

After retiring from the Army, Justin found freedom and happiness on the open road. He loved riding his motorcycle, riding with the Sundowners and touring the country with them. Whenever he had the chance, Justin would take his “Queen,” his fiancée Michelle, along for the ride. Michelle was the love of his life, and the adventures and memories they shared together meant the world to him.

In the last several years of his life, Justin dedicated himself to becoming a better man and reconnecting with family and friends. He valued those relationships deeply and worked hard to strengthen the bonds with the people he loved.

Justin enjoyed his retirement building custom snake and reptile enclosures, spending time with his seven dogs and four snakes, riding his motorcycle, and simply enjoying life with the people he loved. Whether it was his family, his animals, his work, or something he believed in, Justin never did anything halfway. He gave 110 percent to everyone and everything he loved and cared about.

Justin was preceded in death by his stepfather John Beck; his grandfather Scotty; his grandparents Linda and Joe Hosea; and his grandfather Carl Parker.

He is survived by his beloved fiancée Michelle Young; his mother Jody Marlow (Greg); his father Richard Parker (Maureen); his grandmother Marilyn Gilman; and his grandfather Butch Beck.

He is also survived by his children Rylee Parker of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Katelynn and Kylee Parker of Kokomo, Indiana; Madison Conradson, Lena Diorio, and Hayden Young of Columbia, South Carolina; Lucas Parker of Lexington, Kentucky; and Bella Flannergin of Germany.

Justin is further survived by his siblings Billie Oldenburg, Nichole Settle (Mike) of Camby, Indiana, Tara Dome (Casey) of New Carlisle, Indiana, Richard “Bub” Parker, Stephanie Beck (Ashley) of Whiting, Indiana, Kaisle Marlow of Carmel, IN, and Jackson Marlow of Elkhart, IN; along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends who loved him dearly.

Justin touched more lives than he may ever have realized. He will be remembered as a soldier, a fiancé, a son, a brother, a father, a friend, an uncle, and a man who loved fiercely. His strength, humor, loyalty, determination, and enormous heart left an imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Though his time here ended far too soon, the love he gave, the memories he created, and the lives he touched will remain.

Dennis Lee “Denny” Clem

Dennis Lee “Denny” Clem, age 68, passed away on August 20, 2026, in China Grove, North Carolina.

Denny was born on January 2, 1958, in Logansport, Indiana, to the late Fredrick Leroy and Lola Marie Clem. He grew up surrounded by family and lifelong memories in the community where he was raised. A 1976 graduate of Logansport High School, he carried the values of hard work, loyalty, and devotion with him throughout his life. Those who knew him best will remember him as a loving, friendly, and passionate man whose presence brought warmth and familiarity to every gathering.

Denny spent more than 30 years working at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where he became a familiar and respected part of the racing world. His long career reflected not only his strong work ethic, but also his deep connection to the sport he loved so much. Racing was an important part of his life, and he found great joy in being around the track and the people who shared his enthusiasm. He could often be found with his family at the racetrack, where some of his happiest memories were made.

In the 1980s, Denny raced at US 24 Speedway, an experience that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He had a special love for his 1965 Plymouth, and he took great pride in it. He also enjoyed attending hot rod shows, where he appreciated the craftsmanship, history, and excitement that came with classic cars and racing culture. Whether he was watching the action, talking about engines, or simply spending time among friends and family at the track, Denny was in his element when surrounded by the world of racing.

Denny is survived by his children Shawn Clem and his wife Michelle, Jennifer Huff, and Scott Vester and his wife Leslie. He was a proud grandfather to Gavin Clem, Gracie Clem, Berlyn Huff, Lanee Huff, and Weston Vester. He is also survived by his sister Marilyn Noble, as well as several nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his parents Fredrick Leroy and Lola Marie Clem, his brother Harold Clem, and his sister Carol Smith.

Denny’s life was defined by the love he had for his family and the passion he carried for the things that mattered most to him. He was a man who valued time spent with loved ones, and he made those moments count. His family and friends will remember his kind heart, his easy smile, and the steady, caring way he moved through life. He had a way of making people feel welcome, and his friendly nature left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Though he will be deeply missed, Denny’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. His family will remember him for the joy he brought, the stories he shared, and the strong example he set through his devotion to both family and racing. His legacy is one of love, friendship, and passion, and he will be forever remembered with gratitude and affection.

Jay D. Oyler

Jay D. Oyler, 68, of Kokomo, passed away at 8:42 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026.

Jay was born on October 21, 1957, in Mansfield, Ohio, the son of John Oyler and Judith (Lindsay) Davis. He graduated from Oak Hill High School in 1976. Jay married Nancy (Flatford) Oyler on May 26, 1995, in Sevierville, Tennessee. Together, they raised two kids and shared more than 31 years of marriage filled with many cherished memories.

Jay D. Oyler loved life even when it wasn’t easy, and it often wasn’t easy. He faced more than his fair share of struggles, but he never let it steal his joy. Instead, it made him kinder and wiser. He shared that wisdom with any who needed it. He was always ready to listen, offer guidance, or share a laugh or two. And he sure did love to laugh! Even in the darkest moments, and maybe especially in the darkest moments, he would make a joke or sarcastic comment and lighten the mood in the room. His strong sense of humor stayed with him to the very end.

He took great pride in his family and always put them first. He loved spending time with them, whether it was taking a young Kristen to “the candy store” (the local gas station) or driving Amanda to the mall with the doors off of the Jeep. He was a fun and devoted Papaw to Amelia and Zoe, always taking the time to play games with them or teach them to swim or how to ride a bike.

Beyond his family, Jay made friends with anyone he came across. He loved getting to know people, whether by trading stories (goodness knows Jay had stories) or just chatting about the weather. He could brighten up your day in just a couple of words and leave feeling richer himself.

He loved classic cars and could tell you all about any driving by, partly because he owned plenty of them in his day. His favorite movie was “The Wizard of Oz,” and he watched “A Christmas Story” on repeat every December. He loved the beach, swimming, and fishing. He loved figuring out how things worked and especially loved getting broken things working again. He believed he could fix anything with enough elbow grease, and he was usually right. He was a special kind of dad whom you could call for everything from a stalled car to a broken heart.

He loved deeply and was so deeply loved. He will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Every time they show kindness to others, choose to laugh in difficult times, or love life despite it all, he is still with us. Goodnight, love you, sweet dreams.

Survivors include his wife Nancy Oyler of Kokomo, IN; two daughters Amanda (Eric) Jamison of Huntington, IN, and Kristen (Victor Taylor) Oyler of Clarkston, GA; two granddaughters Amelia and Zoe Jamison of Huntington, IN; two brothers Jim (Pam) Oyler of Somerset, IN, and Wade Oyler of Marion, IN; two sisters Barb Kinzie of Marion, IN, and Deb Smith of LaFontaine, IN; as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father John Dalton Oyler, mother Judith Ann Davis, and brother Tom Oyler.

A celebration of life will be held at The Garden House in Marion, IN, on October 9, 2026, from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Amanda Elaine Morgan

Amanda Elaine Morgan, 49, Kokomo, passed away Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital. She was born July 14, 1977, in Kokomo, the daughter of Donald E. Smith and Deborah “Debbie” Osborne.

Amanda was a 1996 graduate of Kokomo High School. She worked as a sales representative for Lazarus Jewelry Store. Amanda enjoyed crafting, painting, and swimming.

Amanda is survived by her mother Deborah Osborne; father Donald (Dee) Smith; siblings Dawn Wright, Eric (Zola) Smith, Gary (April) Osborne Jr., Christina (JB) Linzey, and Thomas Offutt; nieces and nephews she considered her own children Allison Smith, Alexzander Castillo, Aliva Wright, Johnathon Smith, and Samantha Smith; and longtime friend Matthew (Wendy) Morgan.

Amanda was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents; stepfather Gary Osborne Sr.; siblings Teresa Osborne and Jeffery Osborne; and best friend Linda Offutt Paul.

Larry Carlyle Hurst

Larry Carlyle Hurst, who died August 25, 2026, was born at the Putnam County Hospital, Greencastle, on October 13, 1938, to Cecil Carlyle and Bessie Henry Hurst.

Larry graduated from Greencastle Schools in 1956. As a member of the GHS FFA Dairy Judging Team, he traveled to the nationals in 1955, where they placed second. In 1956, he won High Individual Judge and the National Championship with a three-man GHS team. He attended the Purdue Agricultural Short Course in Lafayette in 1957. As well as farming, Larry was employed by IBM before working more than 24 years for John Deere dealerships as parts manager. Before retiring, Larry carpentered with Bill Wallace of Wallace Construction in Reelsville.

A life-long faithful member of Deer Creek Primitive Baptist Church, he was ordained as an Elder in 1964. Larry served as pastor for more than 50 years at Deer Creek and Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Bedford, as well as filling various appointments around the Midwest. He was a caretaker of Deer Creek Church and Cemetery and member of the cemetery board.

He married Mary Frances Crodian on August 21, 1960, with whom he had Mark (Debbie) Hurst and Mary Ruth (Tim) Gould, both of Greencastle, Stephen (Julie) Hurst of Tennessee, and Paul (Dian) Hurst of Tipton. Mary Frances preceded him in death in 1985. He married Martha Gloe Craver on July 13, 1986. She survives.

After the family grew into the next generations, he enjoyed the adventures and antics of the grandchildren: Jennifer (Matt) Green of Marshall, Vanessa (Kirby) Boyd of Crawfordsville, Jake (Madison) Gould of Greencastle, Sam Gould (fiancé Kelli Durant) of Wisconsin, Samantha (Robert) Cross, Rebecca (Andrew) Spiegelman, and Matthew (fiancé Autumn Sanguinette), all of Tennessee, Nicole Hurst of Texas, and Larry Michael (Anna) Hurst of Sharpsville. Great-grandchildren include Everly Green, Bentley Chapman, Cole and Allison Boyd, Logan and Mallory Gould, Ivy Cross, and Eliza Jane and Henry Hurst. Also surviving area sister-in-law Marlene Hurst, nieces Samantha Duncan, Kay (Andrew) Genotte, Kate Hurst (Jordan Nichols), and Emily Hurst, nephew TJ Hurst, as well as other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jerry Hurst and Terry Hurst.

Besides his love of people and service to them, Larry enjoyed the lessons of nature through traveling, walking in the woods, gardening, tending and observing birds, and savoring the nighttime sky. He named Bryce Canyon as his favorite destination and after retiring enjoyed visiting with fellow travelers on several trips around the U.S.

To honor Larry’s wishes after cremation, a private, immediate family burial will take place at Deer Creek Cemetery. Anyone wishing to honor him may donate to Deer Creek Church at 1979 South County Road 450 East, Greencastle, IN 46135.

Clarence I. Ragan, 95, of Sweetser, passed away at 11:57 a.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Wesleyan Health Care & Rehabilitation Center in Marion. He was born north of West Middleton in Howard County, Indiana, on Tuesday, December 2, 1930, to Frank A. and Flora (Shirley) Ragan.

Mr. Ragan and his siblings were admitted to the Moose Lodge’s Children Home (Mooseheart, IL) where he attended school through his junior year, completing his high school education at Greentown (IN) High School, graduating in 1948.

Mr. Ragan married Barbara J. Hiatt of Greentown, July 22, 1949; they moved to Sweetser in 1956. They had two children: Mark A. (Chikako), of Brisbane, Australia, and Abby R. Molino, Frankton, IN. There are four grandchildren Alicia and Wesley (Vi) Ragan, of Brisbane, Australia, and Vincent and Victor Molino of Greentown, Indiana; and one great-grandchild born to Wesley and Vi Ragan, Niko Ragan.

His wife Barbara passed away in June 2008. He was also preceded in death by his nine siblings: four brothers, Ernest F., Lester E., Clyde E., and Louis S.; and five sisters Esther Watson, Helen Carlisle, Marianna Hunt Ewing, and twin sisters Kathleen Schopp Buckley and Katherine Kucharski.

Clarence maintained a membership in the Moose Lodge as an expression of his gratitude for the Moose Lodge’s care for him and his siblings during the Depression years of the 1930s through the early 1940s. For the majority of his working career, he was employed as a printer, working at several printing firms throughout central and north-central Indiana. He was a long-time member of the International Typographical Union, working under union jurisdiction in Kokomo, Indianapolis, and Marion. After retirement, he became the proprietor of the Backburner Press in Sweetser, a working printing museum dedicated to the preservation of letterpress printing technology.

He was his wife’s “go-fer” during her ownership of The Etcetera Gift Shop and The Sweetser Antiques, Etc., 1978 through 2008.

A Protestant, in his doctrinal preference he was a committed Calvinist; arriving at this conclusion through study of the Bible, theology, and church history.

There will be no visitation or funeral services. Mr. Ragan said, “There have been enough lies told about me already.” Burial will at Maple Grove Cemetery in Sweetser, Indiana.

A Gospel explosion is coming to Kokomo. On Sept. 14-15, Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church will host renowned minister Tony Evans for a two-day service open to the entire community. According to Mt. Pisgah’s pastor Rev. Dr. Lonnie Anderson Jr., the event is intended as a revival not only of his church congregation, but for all who attend.

“We’re excited!” exclaimed Anderson. “I love the way (Evans) simplifies the gospel. He makes it so easy for people to understand the grace of God, the finished work of Jesus.

“This will be revival style. We’re going to have worship. We’re going to praise God. We’re going to lift His holy name. We’re going to definitely give God praise. We’re calling it a Gospel Explosion.”

Tony Evans is one of the most prominent pastors in the U.S., guiding the Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas from its founding in 1976 until 2024. He is the founder of The Urban Alternative, an organization that helps Evans spread his teachings via radio across the globe.

Evans is also the first African American to write and publish a full commentary of the Bible and a study Bible. He has authored more than 100 books over the course of his career.

As for the Sept. 14-15 event, Anderson explained it will be a “good, down-home worship service in the African American tradition.” And while he characterized it as a revival, the pastor sees the Gospel Explosion as something that cannot be limited to his church and congregation.

“It’s a city revival,” said Anderson. “Really, we want the gospel to explode inside of us, so we can, in turn, take it out of these walls. I’m grateful for a church that definitely believes in evangelism.”

One might think convincing Evans, a pastor of such prominence, would be difficult, if not impossible. Anderson admitted that he was uncertain how this special revival would come together. It turns out that there wasn’t an opportunity to worry.

“It was just prayer,” said Anderson. “I really wanted someone who would challenge the Christian community to be who God has called her to be. I wanted someone who can rightfully divide the Word of God and speak with passion, boldness, and simplicity. I desired someone who could be a unifier.

“So, the Lord placed (Evans) on my mind, and we sent out the invitation, not quite knowing what that would look like or what that would be. The Lord just opened up doors for it. He’s coming because the Lord opened up doors for it.”

The two-day event will take place at Mt. Pisgah, 1599 E. Sycamore St., each evening at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m., and if the early interest is any indication, people should plan to get there as early as possible.

“We’ve been getting people calling from Chicago, from Gary, Indianapolis, Muncie, all the surrounding cities,” said Anderson. “I know some people coming from North Carolina. I know some people are coming each night from Cincinnati. I know one particular group that’s coming from Nashville.

“It’s going to be interesting. Our church sits 850 on the floor, and another 50 in the choir stand. I’m not sure what it’s going to look like, but we’ve been we’ve been preparing this for this for over a year.”

That preparation started with a lot of prayer and a lot of planning. In addition to Evans, the two nights will feature plenty of music from the Mount Pisgah Sanctuary Choir, and there will be featured vocal soloists each evening. And Mayor Tyler Moore will be present on Sept. 14 to officially welcome Evans to Kokomo.

“We just really want God to have His way,” said Anderson. “When he leaves the city, I don’t want it to be said that Tony Evans came to Kokomo. I want it to be said revival came to Kokomo. Evans is a noted theologian, but more than that, he is a man who can bring God’s word to life.

“To the community, I say, be our special guests. Come and witness what God is trying to do, not only in this church, but in this community, in this city, in this state, in this nation, in this world. Come and worship with us and enjoy what God wants to say to this city in a time like this.”

In July 2026, the Howard County Sheriff’s Office hosted a week-long, multi-agency undercover online chat operation, targeting individuals seeking to sexually exploit minors through internet-based communications. Participating agencies included the Howard County Sheriff’s Office Task Force Unit, the Kokomo Police Department, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, the Indiana State Police, and the Department of Homeland Security.

During the operation, investigators utilized undercover online personas portraying underage individuals to identify persons attempting to engage in criminal activity involving minors. Throughout the operation, numerous online conversations were initiated with individuals who believed they were communicating with juveniles.

As a direct result of this operation, two individuals traveled to a predetermined meeting location with the intent to engage in sexual acts with individuals they believed to be under the age of 18. Upon arrival, both individuals were taken into custody without incident.

Appeals on Wheels comes to IUK

IU Kokomo’s Havens Auditorium will host Appeals on Wheels, a live Indiana Court of Appeals presentation of an actual appeals case on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

The program, according to IU Kokomo Senior Lecturer in Philosophy Scott Blackwell, is a traveling presentation that has visited all 92 Indiana counties. The justices will be trying an active appeals case on the Havens stage.

The award-winning civics program helps Hoosiers to learn about how Indiana’s judiciary works and also provides opportunities for justices to meet and talk with citizens across the state outside of a formal courtroom setting. Blackwell noted that the format used is what really goes on in an appellate courtroom

“Twenty minutes for each lawyer to present his case,” said Blackwell. “The judges might speak for a bit after, but then the judges will take questions from the audience; not about this case though.”

Blackwell indicated questions can be about court procedures and the justices’ reasoning behind them.

Community First hits 20 on Dixon

Community First Bank of Indiana (CFB) is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Dixon Road branch, recognizing two decades of growth, community partnership, and customer relationships that have helped shape the bank’s story.

Just three years after Community First Bank was founded in 2003, the bank expanded with the opening of its Dixon Road location in Kokomo. Education is KEY at Indiana University Kokomo.

That is NOT the reason for a moratorium. A one-year moratorium will allow the council to study the effects data centers are having on communities that already have data centers.

This is what a responsible government entity should do, not run head-long into the unknown.

One council person told me that “the administration does not want” a moratorium. I thought the city council was independent of the administration and was answerable to the people who elected them, not the “administration.”

The County Commissioners have put a one-year moratorium on data centers in the county. The Kokomo Common Council should do the same.

Kathy D. McBee, 72, of Kokomo, passed away on August, 30, 2026, at Aperion Care in Peru, IN. She was born on July 30, 1954, the daughter of Cloman O. and Margaret B. (Lytle) McBee.

Kathy was a 1974 graduate of Kokomo High School. She worked as an in-home nurse and at the cafeteria at General Motors. Kathy enjoyed listening to Country and Gospel music. She also liked cooking and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Kathy had a big heart for helping others and would support Riley Children’s Hospital and caring for children by providing stuffed animals. She supported her son’s motorcycle rides to support Riley Children’s Hospital as well.

She is survived by her son Nathan H. (Kelley) McBee; grandsons Nathaniel J. McBee and Noah E. McBee; and mother of her grandsons Melissa McBee.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers David McBee, Dale McBee, Delmar McBee, and Timothy McBee.

Sandra Sue Griffin

Sandra Sue Griffin, 85, of Lafayette, passed away at 1:00 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026, at Milner Nursing Home in Rossville, Indiana. Sandra was born on December 23, 1940, in Tipton, Indiana, the daughter of Arthur and Maxine Ogle.

As a young woman, Sandra worked at Western Union Telegraph Company in Chicago. She married Robert Griffin, and the couple moved to Lafayette, Indiana, in 1966. They divorced years later. Sandra then worked as the Office Manager at Pay Less Super Market on Elmwood Avenue in Lafayette, where she remained until her retirement. Sandra loved taking big vacations and traveling to places such as California, Hawaii, Washington state, and Florida.

Sandra and Robert had three children: Kelly Studebaker, Michael Griffin, and Kathie Foster. Kathie sadly passed away on February 26, 2021.

Sandra’s grandchildren are Jenny Garst, April Cook, Alex Studebaker, Maxwell Griffin, Josephine Griffin, Benjamin Griffin, Justin Robbins, and Heather McKinney. Sandra also had many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Maxine Ogle and her daughter Kathie Foster.

Patricia Ann Boyd

On August 25, 2026, Jesus sent an angel to Muncie, Indiana, to come and take our beloved wife and mother Patricia Ann Boyd home to glory. Patricia was born on August 27, 1966, to William and Jeanette Dean in Marion, Indiana. She accepted Christ at an early age at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Michigan City, Indiana, under the leadership of Pastor DT Taylor. She married Donald Boyd on July 13, 1991, in Marion, IN. To this union, two children were born.

In her early years, Patricia joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend CL Adams. She remained a member of the House of Worship for All People in Marion, IN, under the leadership of Reverend Perkins, Elder Nukes, and, until her death, Elder Damion Jackson.

Patricia was a devoted wife and mother who loved her entire family and was not afraid to show it. She graduated from Marion High School and went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Indiana University. She worked in various nursing positions and loved being a travel nurse. She retired from the Marion VA hospital and went on to enjoy various hobbies, such as watching her son play high school tennis and hip-hop performances, as well as traveling to watch her daughter play college tennis. In her spare time, she also enjoyed decorating for events and hosting musical events with her husband.

She leaves to cherish her memories: husband Donald, a son Deray (Brianna) of Kokomo, IN; a daughter Jasmine of Slidell, LA; one sister Lisa of Indianapolis, IN; two brothers William Jr. of Anderson, IN, and Bruce Michael of Indianapolis, IN; other relatives, church family, and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Jeanette Dean and two brothers Ronald and Bryant Dean.

Estelle A. Clark

Estelle A. Clark, 96, of Kokomo, passed away at 9:29 a.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at her home. She was born May 15, 1930, in Richmond, North Carolina, to Alexander J. and Florence Camellia (Brown) Dunn. On September 2, 1950, she married Herbert Junior Clark, at the Fairlawn United Brethren Church in Kokomo, and he preceded her in death on June 5, 2019.

Estelle graduated from West End High School, in West End, North Carolina, in 1949 and later attended beauty college. She was proud to say that she was a worker all of her life, having worked in her teens on jobs such as sorting tobacco leaves, picking cotton, pairing socks, etc. She worked at Delco for several years, and after beauty college, worked as a beautician for many years with her sister Frances, eventually becoming owner of the Magic Touch Beauty Salon and retiring in 1994. Estelle enjoyed line dancing, playing cards, and was always a well-dressed and fashionable lady. She was a former member of Fairlawn United Brethren Church and Beamer United Methodist Church, and when Beamer closed, she became a member of Kokomo Zion Church.

Survivors include her sons Terry (Juanita) Clark and Tim (Julie) Clark; grandson Mike Clark; seven step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and siblings James Curtis Dunn, Clyde Rufus Dunn, Edward A. Dunn, Mary Frances Miller, Monnie M. Conrad, and Pearl Dunn.

Harbans Singh Sr.

Harbans Singh Sr., 69, Kokomo, passed away at 5:02 a.m. on Sunday August 30, 2026, at Community Howard Regional Health. He was born in Gobindpur, India, on April 6, 1957, the son of the late Didar and Ratan (Kaur) Singh. He married Kulwinder Kaur, and she survives.

Harbans enjoyed gardening, cooking, and listening to the radio.

Along with his wife Kulwinder, Harbans is survived by his children Baljinder Kaur (Sukwinder) Singh, Avtar Nijjar (Karamdeep), and Hardip Basraon (Darshan); grandchildren Lovedeep Kaur, Tejasvi Basraon, Hardarsh Basraon, Gurnoor Nijjar, Manroop Nijjar, Ikjot Nijjar, Amreet Basraon, and Jiwan Sohal.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ronnie Drue Sedberry

Ronnie Drue Sedberry, 86, of Phoenix, Arizona, went home to Heaven unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 9:18 p.m. at Banner Hospital in Glendale, Arizona. He was born June 17, 1940, in Abilene, Texas, to the late Alton Elois Sedberry and Dorothy Bell (Hutchins) Sedberry. Following his mother’s death, he and his siblings were raised in the Hendricks Home for Children in Abilene, Texas. He was a 1958 graduate of Abilene High School. He was married to the love of his life Sondra Ann Sedberry on June 17, 1967, in Kokomo, and she preceded him in death on November 26, 2021.

Ronnie Sedberry retired from Daimler Chrysler in 2007 after many years of service and was a proud member of UAW Local 685. He was also self-employed as a roofer for many years. Ronnie & Sondra were Realtors in Tucson following their move to Arizona.

A devout Christian, Ronnie Sedberry enjoyed a life filled with faith, family, music, and simple pleasures. He loved reading his Bible and learning in his faith, playing BINGO, being outdoors, singing karaoke, and cheering for the Dallas Cowboys. He was especially fond of Elvis Presley and collected Elvis memorabilia; his collection and Elvis room were even featured in the news.

Ronnie Sedberry is survived by his daughters Julie (Joe) Ishmael and Melissa (Richard) Doucette; grandchildren Dustin, Hydie (Jerrico), Brittney, Cody, Cory (LeeAnn), Taylor, Shawn (Madison), Michelene, Selina, Jimi (Kourtney), Brandi, Kathryn, Michael, Jacob, Alton, Jayden, Kelli, Becky, and Michelle; many beloved great-grandchildren; and his sister Connie Weddle.

Ronnie Sedberry was preceded into Heaven by his parents; his wife of 54 years Sondra Ann Sedberry; children Vicki, Paige, Sonja and Shane; grandson Tyler; and brothers Larry Sedberry and Donnie Sedberry.

Ronnie Sedberry will be remembered for his love of family, his joyful spirit, his appreciation for music, and the many memories he created with those who knew and loved him.

Virgil “Mark” Goebel

Virgil “Mark” Goebel, 78, of St. Anthony, passed away peacefully at his home on August 31, 2026. Mark was born December 12, 1947, in Paris, IL, to Virgil and Virginia (Ware) Goebel. Mark is survived by his son Dorian Goebel of Petersburg IN, and daughter Marni (Justin) Vonderheide, along with his grandchildren who he adored Anstin and Amrin Vondehreide St.Anthony, his former wife Joan (Gariepy) Goebel of Petersburg IN, sister Diane Klueh of Kokomo, brother Danny Goebel of Vincennes IN, and nieces and nephews.

Mark worked in Information Technology and was a self-proclaimed “computer geek.” Mark was a Vietnam veteran who served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. St. Paul. He loved motocross and grilling. Mark was a talented cook and loved entering BBQ contests. He loved music and was very talented. He wrote music and played many instruments, especially guitar, until his passing. Mark was also a member of the St. Anthony V.F.W.

Mark is preceded in death by his parents and sister Camilla Fleck of Vincennes, IN. There will be a Celebration of Life and a later date; no services have been announced. Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand has been entrusted with final arrangements.

Rafael Johnson

Rafael Johnson, 43 years old, of Michigantown, IN, passed away Friday, August 28, 2026. He was born on October 11, 1982, in Toledo, OH, the son of Dorothy Meyer. On August 24, 2008, he married Courtney Ann McClaran in Nashville, IN, and she survives.

Rafael was employed at Stellantis in Kokomo where he worked on the production line. He had the best jokes to pair with his goofy personality. Rafael always found ways to serve and love people before himself. He had a strong faith in Jesus after being saved and baptized. He liked reading the Bible, listening to worship music, and attending church. He found joy in bringing people to a personal relationship with the Lord. He liked any activities that helped him enjoy the outdoors, especially hiking, golfing, and swimming with his kids. His favorite vacations were spent in Panama City Beach, FL. Rafael was fascinated by drawing pictures, playing video games, and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife Courtney, Rafael is survived by his children Natalie Johnson, Nathaniel Johnson, and Naylee Johnson; mom Dorothy Meyer; father and mother-in-law Joe and Tami McClaran; sister and brother-in-law Kristin and Weston Wagoner; grandmother Shirley Smith; nephew and niece Emily and Collin Wheeler; brother Gordo; siblings Melody (Steve) Harris, Becky (Tim) Herrera, Crystal (Matt) Stout, Monica (Nick) Martin, and Katie Garza; nephews Julian, Alex, Michael, Devon, Collin, and Grant; and nieces Jillian, Kadance, and Abbie.

He was preceded in death by his grandpa Gary Smith.

Rita M. Overdorf

Rita May McTaggart Overdorf was born January 5, 1938, to Charles J. and Rose E. Jenkins McTaggart in Tipton, Indiana. Rita joined the burgeoning family, including her eldest sister Sharlene, later welcoming the youngest, Ilene.

Rita attended and graduated from Tipton County High School. At the young age of 17, a young Richard Lee Overdorf spotted her in a bowling alley. After finally finding her walking through town, he recognized her to be “the one,” and their epic romance began, enjoying nuptials on December 18, 1955. Their love and adventures lasted until his passing on October 17, 2024, culminating in 68 years of marriage. They celebrated the birth of the sons Bret A. and Scot W. Overdorf, enjoying weekend antiquing trips to supply the family business Buena Vista Antiques, run by Richard’s father Eugene in Atlanta, Indiana. The four also traveled the globe, exploring European lands and multiple cruises.

Rita worked as the office manager for Dr. Ferguson in Anderson, Indiana. She retained her medical knowledge and would correct you on the proper pronunciation of any medicine. Once Richard opened his own insurance agency, Rita was the office manager and continued until her retirement. She always focused on organization and efficiency and ran a tight ship. People would marvel at her typing ability. Her typewriter of choice was the IBM Selectric and on more than one occasion, her sons swear smoke was coming from the keys. She was often asked to perform her “typing magic” after hours for school papers for her sons. She never complained.

Rita was a Christ follower and attended Madison Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, in Frankton, Indiana. She was actively involved in the church. She was kind and compassionate and had a servant’s heart. She also extended her ministries and gifts to Beauty for Ashes Transitional Home in Alexandria, Indiana, providing Christ-centered housing and support programs for women and their children to overcome homelessness.

Rita was a collector of many things. She enjoyed the pursuit of Heisey glassware from Newark, Ohio, as well as collecting vintage items such as Evening in Paris perfume bottles, eyecups and Flow Blue China. The more modern collections included Department 56 Snow Babies and Longaberger baskets. Rita was a gifted crafter and made baskets for the annual auction to benefit her church. She hand-wrapped all gifts and made bows to match that were works of art. She loved shopping for the grandchildren, ensuring that each child had numerous gifts for Christmas, all uniquely decorated, and equally distributed. This skill was ironic as she often said she only repaired items that could be glued, stapled, or pinned.

Rita and Richard were fishing enthusiasts, which would serve them well in their 50-year love of fishing in a little-known body of water in Mine Centre, Ontario, Canada, named Turtle Lake. They would make annual excursions in May and September, having missed only once in more than 50 years. Nobody would out-fish Rita. She would sit quietly on the back seat of the boat, her legs extended on top of the motor, and work her magic. She had “people” (mainly Richard) to bait her hook and take off her fish. All obliged if they wanted to eat fish for dinner. She fished for walleye, nothing else. Unfortunately, she was a fish magnet, often hooking small mouth bass, northern pike, and sturgeon. If she hooked one of these “scrub fish” she would hand the pole to someone else in the boat. For more than 20 years they would go to Little Turtle Resort, where they would often catch enough walleye to feed the whole camp. Later, when the lodge closed, they bought a lake home with boat access only. At first, the lake home only had an outhouse and no other amenities. Soon, with Rita’s insistence, the cabin had a full bathroom, washer and dryer, generator shed, and many other comforts. Richard and Rita brought their children, grandchildren, and friends to “the lake.” It was her favorite place.

If there was one word to describe Rita it would be “generous.” She was generous to all. Coming from a modest upbringing, she was always willing to improve the life of others. Rita’s currency of choice was $100 bills, which she called “hunnies.” If you went to visit Rita, odds are you would leave with a hunnie. Rita was initially shy when meeting people. However, she had a deep love and concern for everyone, which people discovered upon getting to know her on an individual level. Upon her passing, many people from Meadow Brook Senior Living recalled to the family of her quiet, sweet manner and making their day better by providing a brief moment of respite in her apartment … served with a side of candy.

She loved shopping … long shopping for hours. Often, she would drag Richard along as they frequented the Potpourri Store in Zionsville (until it closed, much to her dismay) and Hofmeister’s Jewelry. Many times, Richard would sit in the car, reading his Kindle, knowing she would return on “her time.” They later frequented Saks Fifth Avenue, where she knew everyone in the high-end skin care department, which might have assisted in maintaining her beautiful complexion into her senior years. After a hard day of shopping, they would frequent their favorite restaurant, Sullivan’s, where they were known on a first-name basis and were always seated immediately, no matter how crowded the restaurant (the hunnies came in handy!)

Rita May McTaggart Overdorf passed peacefully on Saturday, August 22, 2026, surrounded by family. She is survived by her sons Bret A. (Kelli) and Scot (Tanya) Overdorf, grandchildren Jordan (Merry), Victoria (Jordan), Allison (Joshua), and Rachael (Jon); great-grandchildren Lucas, Quinn, Elijah, Theodore (Teddy), Lee, Scarlett (Scottie), Ruthie, Isaiah, Wade Montgomery (Kic), and Lilly Mae; sister Sharlene; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her elderly years were blessed by the care of Kim Langdon, Season Lewis, and George Broomfield, who treated her with much love and compassion.

Well done good and faithful servant.

Chariot Automotive Group (CAG) recently started the fourth year of Automotive Technician Education Pathway (ATEP), its educational program for high school students. This year’s cohort consists of 45 students, and the program offers three classes, including two first year classes, one second year class at Academy and one second year class at Ivy Tech Kokomo.

“Over the past four years, we have seen 150 students from 13 different schools through the ATEP program,” said Rex Gingerich, CEO of Chariot Automotive Group. “We are excited to expand the program by offering another class at Button, creating more opportunities to give students a sense of direction and purpose for what’s next in their career journey.”

The ATEP program allows high school juniors and seniors to participate in hands-on training while earning college credit – at no cost to them – toward an Associate Degree in Automotive Technology at Ivy Tech Community College. During the course, students spend the first hour in the classroom learning concepts crucial for effective automotive technicians, followed by two hours in the lab implementing teachings through hands-on training.

Employment of automotive technicians and mechanics is projected to grow by 70,000 openings each year on average over the next decade, making the ATEP program critical to local workforce growth. Through the program, graduates are able to build careers that last long beyond a first job.

“The most valuable part of the program is learning inside an active dealership,” said Owen Montgomery, current ATEP student and service advisor at Chariot Automotive Group. “Being surrounded by employees and seeing the workflow firsthand provides a real-world experience that a traditional classroom simply can’t replicate.”

After completing the program, students may be offered a full-time automotive technician position at one of CAG’s four dealership locations. Additionally, the high school curriculum credits can be applied toward the Chariot Automotive Institute apprenticeship program, which is the only Indiana Department of Labor-accredited automotive technician program in the state. Chariot Automotive Institute has also collaborated with Snap-On to increase the value of ATEP program students’ annual tool voucher.

Duke offers heat-related tips

High temperatures return to Indiana this week, and Duke Energy is reminding customers about tools that can help them stay informed about their energy use and connect them with assistance programs if they need help.

High temperatures mean higher energy use. This reminder comes as stretches of extreme heat this summer have driven higher electricity use. As an example, July’s hotter-than-normal weather drove higher cooling needs across Indiana.

Federal data shows “cooling degree days” in July were nearly 20 percent above normal, indicating air conditioners had to run more often and for longer periods to keep homes comfortable.

Cooling degree days are a measure of how much air conditioning is needed for a typical home. Higher cooling degree day totals generally mean hotter weather and greater cooling demand.

Duke Energy offers several tools that can help customers monitor and better understand their energy use. Usage Alerts help customers stay on top of their energy use by providing a text or email alert mid-way through their billing cycle showing how much electricity they have used so far, and a projected bill estimate if usage continues at the same rate through the end of their billing cycle.

By receiving this information before the billing cycle ends, customers have time to adjust their energy usage and potentially reduce costs before their bill arrives.

The Smart Usage Option can help customers save money by shifting some household tasks such as laundry or running a dishwasher to lower-cost times of day, when demand for power is lower.

Free home energy assessments provide expert advice and personalized recommendations to help customers use energy more efficiently and reduce energy costs.

Customers who need help paying their bill are encouraged to contact Duke Energy to learn about payment arrangements and assistance programs. Resources include:

• The shareholder-funded Summer Energy Assistance Credit Program, through which qualifying Duke Energy customers can receive up to a $250 account credit annually.

Duke Foundation awards grant to DSI

Duke Energy has expanded on its already significant commitment to Hoosiers served by DSI Together with Bona Vista, the Kokomo nonprofit that serves adults, children, and families with disabilities.

Bona Vista has received a $5,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation for its “Arts for All Abilities” programming.

“We’re here to help our clients live fuller and more independent lives,” said Bona Vista’s Miriam O’Malley-Long. “And we definitely can’t do that without the support of the business community. Duke Energy has consistently shared their time and talents with us and the families we serve are better for it.”

Put the “Petal to the Metal” with Flowers Feed Folks and the UAW Local 685 Women’s Committee as they offer an evening of bouquet making and community engagement. On Wed., Sept. 2, from 6-8 p.m., participants will get the opportunity to put together their own attractive bouquets while helping out a good cause.

For just $5, participants will receive a bud vase, which they can use at the “bar” to create something beautiful. The vase can be refilled with attractive flowers at a later date for just $3. Arrangements also are available at the regular Bouquet Bar, where small and large arrangements can be purchased, either in a vase provided at the event or by bringing your own vase to fill.

There also will be a silent auction of various items. Door prizes will be awarded, and the UAW 685 Women’s Committee will be selling slushies.

Proceeds from this event will benefit Flowers Feed Folks, a local nonprofit working to “sow the seeds of community and establish the roots of food sovereignty for Howard County.” The group sells flowers to raise funds for community gardens. The produce from those gardens then is donated to local food pantries.

The UAW Local 685 Women’s Committee long has stood as an active community partner promoting events, organizations, and people who are devoted to improving and strengthening the community.

Center Township changes pantry hours

The Center Township Trustee’s Office recently adjusted its food pantry hours, and the public should be made aware. The new hours went into effect Mon., Aug. 31, 2026.

The new food pantry hours are: Mondays from 9:00–11:30 a.m. and 1:30–3:30 p.m.; Tuesdays from 1:30–3:30 p.m.; Wednesdays 9:00–11:30 a.m. and 1:30–3:30 p.m.; Thursdays 9:00–11:30 a.m. and 1:30–3:30 p.m.; and closed on Fridays.

No appointments are necessary to utilize the pantry. The public is welcome to visit the pantry during the allotted times.

Labor Day Roll Call, Sept. 5

The United Auto Workers, the UAW Community Action Committee, and the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists will host a Labor Day Roll Call on Mon., Sept. 5, from noon until 4 p.m. The event is entitled, “United We Rise: Stronger Together for Working Families” and will take place at the UAW Local 685 Union Hall, 929 E. Hoffer St.

This collaboration of labor organizations is designed to honor the labor movement and to recognize the positive impact unions have on the community. The event will feature several guest speakers, including UAW International President Shawn Fain, UAW Region 2B Director Dave Green, UAW Local 685 President Denny Butler, UAW Local 685 Vice President Bill Guinan, Stephanie Graf-Gilliland of the Indiana Federation of Democratic Women, and more.

There will be many family activities offered, include a bounce house for the kids, raffles and giveaways, music from DJ Ambrose Freeman, a Kokomo Fire Department truck, and ice cream.

Unitedopoly rolls into Bel Air

The United Way of Howard and Tipton Counties will hold its 2026 campaign kickoff on Tue., Sept. 22, from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Bel Air Events, 3014 S. Webster St. The public is welcome to attend, and a free lunch will be provided.

The event will feature “Unitedopoly,” a Monopoly-inspired game show featuring more than a few surprises and plenty of fun. This will serve as the start of United Way’s 2026 annual campaign, raising funds for programs such as Buddy Bags, Imagination Library, tax preparation services, and United Way’s Information and Referral services.

The campaign also funds United Way’s annual grant programs. During this event, the organization will award $100,000 in grants to local nonprofits. And the 2026 fundraising goal will be announced during the festivities.

Mary Lynn Dale, age 80, passed peacefully into the loving arms of her Savior on Friday, August 28, 2026, surrounded by family.

She was born on January 13, 1946, in Kokomo, Indiana, to Charles and Goldie Kinzel.

Mary was a hard-working single mom of two sons James and John Pruitt. She raised and provided for them with much love and dedication. She always joked about her “little boys” who were both over 6 feet tall. She worked hard as a transmission technician at Chrysler Corporation, located in Kokomo, Indiana, for 27 years.

The greatest accomplishment in her life, besides her sons, was her love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She came to know the Lord later in life, but she gave Him her complete devotion every day since she made the commitment to follow Him. Through her love for Christ, she was dedicated in teaching Sunday School and helping in Vacation Bible School at her local church. She had a true love for children, and each one she taught brought her great joy.

Mary also loved birds and butterflies, and her family made sure her room was surrounded with both. They even provided a birdfeeder outside her window at the nursing home for her to enjoy watching the birds, which she took great pleasure in for many hours each day.

Mary is preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, siblings, and her loving husband Kent Dale. Mary is survived by her sons James (Tree) Pruitt and John (Rebecca) Pruitt, stepson Brian Dale, and stepdaughters, Lori (Paul) Oaks and Tammy (Terry) Ray, along with countless grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she adored.

A private family service will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in the Quitman Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband; forever in the arms of her Heavenly Father.

Janet “Sue” Copas Logan

Janet “Sue” Copas Logan, 89, of San Angelo, passed away on August 22, 2026.

She was born on March 30, 1937, to Lee Copas and Myrtle Sturgeon in Walton, Indiana.

Sue married the love of her life Don Logan on March 2, 1958, in Lafayette, Indiana. Her husband joined the Air Force, and together they traveled many places.

After graduating from Montmorenci High School in 1955, Sue began working for Sears and Robuck. She again worked for Sears while stationed in Alaska with Don.

Later, in 1968, she began working for the civil service as a clerk and retired while in San Angelo, Texas, in 1993.

Sue enjoyed a great game of cards, sharing her much loved memories of Alaska and Germany and enjoying a good glass of wine.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Don Richard Logan; her parents; and 11 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her loving sister-in-law Dina Gifford of Galveston, IN, and numerous friends and relatives.

A graveside service will be held at Walton Cemetery in Walton, Indiana on Wednesday, September 2, at 11 a.m.

Roger L. Clark

Roger L. Clark, 74, of Claypool, passed away at 8:07 p.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2026. He was born October 24, 1950, in Kokomo, the son of Marshall and Phyllis (Napolitano) Clark.

Roger was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, where he also attended school through the eighth grade. His freshman year was spent at Lafayette Park School, and he graduated from Kokomo High School in 1968. Roger was a supervisor at Delphi Delco Electronics, where he retired in 1999 with 30 years of service. After retirement, Roger spent his summers at his lake home on Yellow Creek Lake in Claypool, IN, and he wintered at his condo in North Port, Florida. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Loyal Order of Moose, and Elks Lodge. Roger will forever be missed; his quick-witted humor was like no other. You could always count on him for a good laugh or much-needed advice.

Roger is survived by his sons Matthew Clark and Joshua (Amy) Clark; grandchildren Aaron Clark, Adam (Shaylee) Clark, Dylan (Keyton) Clark, Olivia Clark, and Abby Evans; and great-grandchildren Calypso (Sharky) Clark, Carmine Clark, Hudson Evans, and Hartley Evans. He also leaves behind his sisters Pam McCrumb and Paula Herr; and nieces and nephew Destiny Herr, Julie Williamson, and Scott McCrumb.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and multiple aunts and uncles.

Nila Jean Utterback

Nila Jean Utterback, 91 of Anderson, and formerly of Tipton, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2026, in Anderson. Nila Jean was born in Paulding, Ohio, and raised in Payne, Ohio. She also lived in Willshire, Lakeview, and Gallipolis, all in Ohio, Highland, Indiana, and then to Tipton while moving her family as her husband John’s pastoral assignments changed. Nila Jean’s parents were Lewis H. and Bernice A. (Gebhart) Shaffer. She married John E. Utterback on September 5, 1953, and he preceded her in death on March 14, 2016.

Nila Jean had several different jobs throughout her life, including working as a model for L.S. Ayres, a retail display manager, restaurant hostess, high school supervisor aide, and she worked at the Emanuel Lutheran Church child care. She was a longtime member of the First Church of the Nazarene and a graduate of the Helen Wells Modeling Agency. Nila Jean enjoyed floral arranging and decorating. Nila also enjoyed collecting and restoring dolls. She loved watching Westerns on TV, especially John Wayne! But her No. 1 activity was shopping!

Survivors include her three children Jackie Greene and husband Eric of Alexandria, Jay Utterback and wife Karen of Indianapolis, and Amy Roberts and husband Wade of Anderson. Nila Jean has six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister and brother-in-law Betty and David Barkley.

Nila Jean’s funeral will be held in Payne, Ohio. Her funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, at the Dooley Funeral Home, 5761 State Route 500, Payne, Ohio, 45880 with Rev. David Stout presiding. Burial will follow in Wiltsie Cemetery, also in Payne. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Nina Jean Ehrman

Nina Jean Ehrman, 101, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully at 7:42 a.m. Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at IU West Hospital in Avon.

Nina was born on August 18, 1925, in Ervin Township, Kokomo, Indiana, the daughter of Homer and Mabel (Harmon) Morrison. On April 14, 1946, she married J. Frank Ehrman in Burlington, Indiana. He preceded her in death on April 22, 2013.

Nina was a 1943 graduate of Burlington High School. Throughout her life, she worked in a variety of roles, including as a switchboard operator in Burlington, in production at Delco Radio, as a secretary for the Employment Security Division, a teller at AFNB, a secretary for Lincoln Life Insurance, and a sales representative at L.S. Ayres.

Nina’s greatest joy, however, was her family. She cared deeply for those she loved and treasured the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild. Her family was at the center of her life, and she will be remembered for the love, care, and presence she gave to the generations that followed her. The memories she created with them will remain a lasting part of her family’s story.

Nina was a member of Ben Davis Christian Church, where she sang in the choir. Her faith, her love of family, and her commitment to those around her were important parts of her life.

She is survived by her son Mark E. Ehrman (Gayanna) of Brownsburg; daughter Jan C. Kamplain (Bruce) of Carmel; grandchildren Stacy Hutson, Todd Ehrman (Ann Marie), Sarah West (Bryan), and Lauren Griffith (Patrick); great-grandchildren Paige Holder (Clayton), Cody Sampson (Cheyenne), Keegan Ehrman, Greyson West, Sloane West, Hollis Griffith, Harper Griffith, and Hazel Griffith; great-great-grandchild Iris Holder; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband J. Frank Ehrman; and her brothers and sisters.

A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Ben Davis Christian Church, 701 S. High School Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46241. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Burlington Cemetery.

Rosanne Kemp Reed

Rosanne Kemp Reed, 75, of Indianapolis and Kempton, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2026, at Community North Hospital in Indianapolis, with her husband at her side.

For more than two decades, Rosanne lived with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic disease that slowly narrowed her world, first through worsening COPD, later through liver cirrhosis. She never let it define her. Rosanne founded Hoosier Alphas, an Indianapolis support group affiliated with the Alpha-1 Foundation, and led it for years, showing up for other families navigating the same rare diagnosis long before most people had ever heard the words “alpha-1.” It was only the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic that finally kept her home.

Rosanne was born December 20, 1950, in Tipton, Indiana, to Col. Joseph A. Kemp and Canadian-born Gloria Cressey Kemp of Kempton, Indiana. Kempton in Tipton County was named after her Kemp ancestors, who donated much of the land on which the town was built. She was one of the first born in the Tipton hospital that opened in 1950.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Marvin Kemp. Surviving are three brothers Jay (Becky) Kemp of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Joe (Pearl) Kemp of Castaic, California, and Karl (Susie) Kemp of Reelsville, Indiana; husband Michael E. Reed; sons Jade Howard of Port Ste. Lucie, Florida, Paul LeRoy of Paris, France, and Will (Andrea) Watson of Thomasville, North Carolina; stepsons Eli (Natalie) Reed of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Chris (Tish) Reed and Kyle (Sierra) Reed of Carmel, Indiana, 13 grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Grandchildren include Monty James, Cali Rose, Lydia Thomas, Gemma Watson, Rory Watson, Kai Watson, Caleb Reed, Aidan Reed, Scarlett Reed, Anaya Reed, Ari Reed, Kyla Reed, and Evangeline June Hart. Her great-grandchild is Lux Kyoko Rose.

Rosanne grew up as an Army brat, daughter of a veteran of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. She lived on U.S. bases in Okinawa, France, Germany, and multiple bases in the U.S. She returned to Kempton regularly to stay with her grandmother Charlotte (Lottie) Kemp when her family could not join her father on assignments in Korea and Vietnam. Her high school years started in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where she sang in a local teen club band and showed off her Motown dance moves with her brother Marvin. She lived in Detroit in the early 1960s.

She finished her high school years in Fort Riley, Kansas, living in the officers’ circle that was once home of generals George Custer and George Patton. In 1968, she graduated from Junction City High School and enrolled in Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. After a year at IU, Rosanne transferred to Bauder College in Miami, Florida, to complete a merchandising degree.

Rosanne’s employment included wide variety from the Garden of the Gods Country Club in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to various jobs in Eagle Creek, Alaska, Huntington Beach, California, Phoenix, Arizona, and Montreal, Canada, returning to Indiana in 1986. She became Human Resources Manager for Exide Corporation in Frankfort, Indiana, where she met her future husband of 33 years Michael Reed, marrying at the Kemp Methodist Church in Tipton on December 5, 1992. The Reeds moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Rosanne became Director of Human Resources for the Grand Milwaukee Hotel. The Reeds moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil, Texas, and Connecticut with employment, then returned to Indiana to own and operate three Midas Auto Repair shops in Indianapolis and Lafayette. The Reeds sold their Midas shops and retired in 2024.

Rosanne was influenced by her cousin Gretchen Kemp, a distinguished Indiana University journalism professor. Along her journey, Rosanne drafted articles for Protect Yourself, a consumer magazine in Montreal, Canada, (as Rosanne LeRoy), and the Ozaukee County News Graphic and Inside Magazine in Cedarburg, Wisconsin (as Rosanne Reed).

Rosanne was a strong partner and maintained many lifelong friendships. She was an adventurer, a spiritual believer with a pure heart, a dreamer and devoted lover of people, and a born negotiator.

Visitation and a Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 19, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Kemp United Methodist Church, 228 N. Main Street, Tipton, Indiana, 46072. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Kemp United Methodist Church would be appreciated.

Roberta Taylor

Roberta Taylor, 95, of South Bend, Indiana, formerly of Greentown, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. She was born on January 15, 1931, in Kentucky, the daughter of Ezekiel Thomas Payne and Gertie Ann (Spicer) Payne. On January 10, 1948, she married Paskel J. Taylor in Williamsburg, Kentucky, and he preceded her in death on February 3, 2000.

Roberta and her husband owned and operated the fruit stand near the fairgrounds in Greentown for many years. She enjoyed attending church, caring for her grandchildren, and writing poetry.

She is survived by her son-in-law Phillip Johnson; grandchildren Callie Riggs, Mary (Billy) McLaurine, Ashleigh Davis, Eli Riggs, Josh (Meredith) Riggs, and Brant Johnson; brother Lester (Lena) Payne; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Roberta was preceded in death by two daughters Cindy Taylor and Barbara Johnson and several siblings.

Ronald Major Shearer

Ronald Major Shearer, known to many as Ron, passed away on August 23, 2026, in Kokomo, Indiana, at the age of 75.

Ron was born on June 28, 1951, in Frankfort, Indiana, to Lee and Pearl Shearer. He was raised with the values of hard work, honesty, and perseverance that would guide him throughout his life. A Christian by faith, Ron lived with quiet strength, a generous spirit, and a steady devotion to the people and work he loved.

Ron graduated from Frankfort High School with the Class of 1969 and went on to complete the Purdue University Engineering program with honors. His education reflected both his natural intelligence and his determination to excel. He had a lifelong curiosity and a remarkable ability to understand how things worked. If something was broken, Ron made it his mission to figure out how to fix it, and he was rarely satisfied until he had learned something new in the process.

He built a distinguished career in engineering and held many patents throughout his professional life. Ron worked for GM/Delco for many years, where his skill, creativity, and problem-solving ability were deeply valued. It was there where he developed many friendships with coworkers that he continued to enjoy through retirement. He was known for approaching complex engineering challenges with patience and precision. His mind was always active, and he enjoyed working with computer programs, researching ideas, and finding practical solutions to difficult problems. His work reflected both his talent and his dedication, and he took great pride in the contributions he made over the years.

Ron grew up as a farmer on his family farm, and that early life shaped much of who he became. He loved working outdoors and found satisfaction in staying busy with meaningful tasks. He also enjoyed carpentry, music, and learning new skills. In recent years, he found great enjoyment in 3D printing, which gave him another way to explore his creativity and technical interests. He especially loved beach vacations, bowling, and golfing, and he took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and the life he shared with his wife.

Ron was a friendly, funny, and intelligent man who made an impression on those around him. He had a warm presence, a quick wit, and a genuine way of connecting with others. He was devoted to his family and especially cherished his wife Sharon Ward Shearer, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. Their life together was built on love, loyalty, and companionship. He is also survived by his daughter Kristie Raine Shearer, his son Ronald William Ty Shearer, and his grandson Kyler William Ty Shearer.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lee and Pearl Shearer. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff at Compassus Hospice and Wellbrooke of Kokomo, as well as Dr. Hayek in Oncology and the nurses in the Cancer Center for their compassionate care and support.

Ron will be remembered for his intelligence, his humor, his friendliness, and the many ways he used his gifts to help others. His life was marked by hard work, curiosity, and love for his family, and his memory will remain a lasting blessing to all who knew him.

He is missed but will never be forgotten.

The skies opened up and poured rain like it would never end on the afternoon of Aug. 26. With just 30 minutes before the first Dan’s Variety Bakery Donut Eating Contest to benefit Relay for Life, it seemed as if the contest would be a wash-out.

But organizer Jeff Haworth was unfazed.

“It’s going to stop raining,” he said with the confidence of a veteran meteorologist.

Though Haworth spent his career as a truck driver for the City of Kokomo, his weather prognostication came to pass. With just moments before the 6 p.m. start of the event, the clouds moved east, and the sun shone down on the Dan’s parking lot. It was time to eat some donuts.

The contest was held in conjunction with Team Knotty Mama, the Relay for Life squad Haworth and his wife, Sheila, founded after she fought off cancer. Twice. She was first diagnosed six years ago, and treatment put it into remission, only to have it return a short time later.

The affliction has been absent for three years. Two more years, and Sheila will be considered a survivor. But she and Jeff are 100-percent warriors in the fight against cancer. They formed a relay team and set about raising funds any way they could.

“We wanted to help our first year, so we just asked friends for donations,” said Jeff. “In our second and third years, we had a couple different fundraisers, but we decided to do something different this year.

“I thought, let’s have a donut eating contest, especially since my family has owned Dan’s for 51 years. Sheila gives me strength every day, seeing what she’s been through and where she’s at now.”

Carrie Haworth, who owns the bakery along with her husband Brian, explained that they were more than happy to help.

“We’re just trying to help continue their legacy and help this community,” said Carrie. “We’re just so thankful that everyone came to participate in this. It’s just really nice to see the community come together.”

As more than 100 people filled the parking lot, Haworth thanked his former co-workers from the City of Kokomo Street Department, as well as his family, for helping make the event happen. He also gave thanks to local businesses that played a role in promoting and supporting the effort.

With the preamble completed, Carrie explained the rules to the competitors. They had eight minutes to pound down as many glazed donuts as they could. Once time expired, they were required to sit for two minutes before the contest was concluded, as regurgitating the pastries before that time would result in a disqualification.

With the rules clearly explained, the nine contestants in the women’s division took their seats at the table. The competition was close, though the winner, Abbey, walked away with the $500 prize after downing 14 donuts. Second place finished off seven donuts, and third place was split between two competitors, who ate six donuts each.

The men’s division was much more robust, with 19 competitors entering the competition. This required the eating to take place in two heats, with the top three amounts eaten taking the prizes, regardless of when they competed.

The first heat was dominated by Teddy, a native of the Chicago area. He consumed 23 donuts and appeared to be the odds-on favorite.

“I’m not going to win,” said Teddy after his round. “I’m used to doing these, but I needed to eat more. It’s not going to be enough.”

As he said this, Teddy pointed to a tall young man who was walking to the table for the second heat.

“He and I do a lot of these things,” said Teddy. “He doesn’t know me. I don’t know him, but I knew he would be here. But I’ll win something because there are multiple prizes.”

Teddy certainly made perhaps the easiest prophecy ever uttered, as his eating rival, Jack Legath of Cleveland, Ohio, demolished the competition in his heat. Seemingly unfazed by the obscene number of donuts, he tore through 24 donuts with more than two minutes to spare.

Checking with the counter to ensure the win was secured, Legath leisurely added another four donuts to his tally before time was called. After the competition, he explained that he learned about the contest from a friend who lives on the Indiana/Ohio border.

“And then I saw it on Facebook,” said Legath. “I look for hidden gems like donut shops that do this, and sometimes people tag me.”

He demurred slightly when asked if eating contests are things he does professionally.

“Professionally is a loose term,” said Legath. “I would say I’m the guy to beat, typically.”

This was the first time Legath had tried a donut eating contest, previously competing in a donut hole contest, “but that’s not the same,” he said.

Most importantly, however, is that hundreds of dollars were raised for Relay for Life. The annual walk takes place Sat., Sept. 12, around the Howard County Courthouse, 104 N. Buckeye St.

The event, which runs from noon until 10 p.m., will feature live music from Hunter Wainscott, Jason Wells, and Elvis, along with food from Mama Karen’s, Tacos Toluca, Tasty Dawg, and Chapman’s BBQ. There will be craft vendors as well. Of course, the event involves walking laps around the courthouse in a fundraising effort to support the American Cancer Society. Ruth Marie “Goat” Jordan, 96, was granted her final birthday wish on August 28, 2026, just three days shy of her 97th birthday.

Born on August 31, 1929, in Centreville, Michigan, Ruth was the last surviving of seven children born to Eva and John Elmo Ford.

On February 17, 1948, Ruth married Glen A. Jordan. He preceded her in death exactly 14 years earlier, on August 28, 2012, after 64 wonderful years of marriage.

Ruth retired from Delco Electronics after 30 years, where she worked alongside many of her most cherished friends. Following her retirement, she volunteered for many years at St. Joseph and Howard Community hospitals. She enjoyed reading and watching Wheel of Fortune until her vision was taken by macular degeneration. Above all, Ruth cherished spending time with her family, who brought her the greatest joy.

Those left to carry on Ruth’s legacy include her daughter Teckla (Rick) Willoughby of Russiaville; grandchildren Tristy Wheeler of Lapel, Julie Willoughby and Amy Bortman of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Brian (Julie Smith) Glandon of Syracuse, Shawn (Rashelle) Bolinger of Fort Myers, Florida, Angel Knecht of Jonestown, Pennsylvania, and Jeremy Maikrzek of Houghton Lake, Michigan. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Carol Ford of Carnesville, Georgia; son-in-law Gary Maikrzek of Houghton Lake, Michigan; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings; her husband Glen; her daughters Tina Bolinger and Beckie Maikrzek; her granddaughters Erica Vollmers and Jessica Clements; and countless dear friends.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Compassus Hospice, especially “Preacher Man” Alan Rollins, for guiding Ruth through her final journey. Special thanks are also extended to the staff at The Crossings at Kokomo for the compassionate care they provided during Ruth’s time with them.

Linda S. Crail

Linda S. Crail, 82, of Russiaville, Indiana, passed away at 2:50 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo. Born April 11, 1944, in Indianapolis, Linda was the daughter of J. Robert Ogle and Margaret (Rawlings) Ogle. She married Gerald Crail on June 1, 1962. He preceded her in death on April 8, 2008.

Linda worked for General Motors in Kokomo retiring in 1998 after 32 years of service.

She is survived by her son Keith (Jeanette Gordon) Crail; grandchildren Thomas (Jennifer) Crail, Victoria (Kyle) Bernard, and Nicholas (Amanda) Crail; great grandson Coltin Crail; and sister Leah Rains.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald; parents; brothers Robert Ogle and John Ogle; and a sister Mary Crawford.

Martha Kay Armstrong

Martha Kay Armstrong, 89, of Greentown, passed away Tuesday August 25, 2026, at Century Fields. She was born March 27, 1937, in Moss, Tennessee, the daughter of Guy Harpe and Ida (Moss) Harpe. On January 8, 1955, Martha married Robert Thomas Armstrong in Tipton, Indiana. He preceded her in death on April 24, 2009.

A devoted homemaker and a godly woman, Martha treasured her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and board games, and cheering for the Indiana Pacers.

Survivors include her children David Armstrong, Donald (Jodie) Armstrong, and Kim (Todd Mayfield) Land; grandchildren Zachary (Kristin) Armstrong, Matt (Jan) Armstrong, Danielle (Drew) Botteron, Kyle Land, and Jimmy (Kelley) Land; eight great-grandchildren; and siblings James (Susan) Harpe and Mary Barker.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and siblings Benny Boles, Vallie Harpe, Alice Johnson, Lillian Karnes, Azalea Harpe, Robert Harpe, and Hilry Harpe.

Ruth Virginua (Slagle) Huckeby

Ruth Virginua (Slagle) Huckeby, 88, of New Castle, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loved ones, on the evening of Thursday, August 27, 2026.

She was born on December 10, 1937, in Monticello, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Robert Vincent Slagle and Edna (Dobbs) Turner.

Ruth attended Lewisville High School. She was a devoted homemaker, wife, and mother who lovingly raised her three children. She found joy in the simple things that made a house a home. Ruth loved shopping and collecting vintage dolls, along with a variety of other antique treasures. She enjoyed embroidery and stitch work and took great pride in her homemaking. She had a deep love for home economics and cooking and was happiest when caring for her family.

Ruth had an exceptional green thumb and loved planting and tending to her flowers and plants. She adored her dogs Gypsy and Cody, who brought her much happiness and companionship.

Ruth also took great pride in her appearance. She loved doing her hair and makeup and had a wonderful sense of style and fashion. It was important to her that everything matched perfectly, reflecting the care and attention to detail she brought to so many aspects of her life.

She married the love of her life Hurlen Dean Huckeby, and together they shared 67 wonderful years of marriage. They enjoyed traveling together, and Ruth especially loved exploring the West. Some of her happiest memories were made while traveling with Hurlen to spend time with family and visit their grandchildren. Above all, Ruth treasured the time she spent with the people she loved, creating memories that will be cherished for generations.

Those left to cherish Ruth’s memory include her daughter Kim Cox of New Castle; son David Huckeby of New Castle; six grandchildren Matt Schetgen of New Castle, Charissa (Casey) Robison of Las Vegas, NV, Kelli (Scott) Bradley of Whiteland, IN, Doug (Zoe) Huckeby of New Castle, Brandon Huckeby of Pensacola, FL and Shannon (Ashley) Huckeby of Kokomo, IN; 13 great-grandchildren Alyssa, Stevie, BJ and Bekkam Robison of Las Vegas, NV, Jalyn, Meghan, and Allyson Turlo of Whiteland, IN, Rees Schetgen of New Castle, Kennedy and Kenzie Huckeby of Kokomo, and Haven, Jaelynn, and Braxton Huckeby of Clearwater, FL; one great-great-grandson Bryson of Las Vegas; her brother Don (Saundra) Slagle of Colorado Springs, CO; a special niece Sonni Cross; and several other nieces, nephews.

Amanda Lynn Skeans, 41, of Andrews, Indiana, passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at University Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. She was born on October 12, 1984, to Malissa Jane Timmons in Monticello, Indiana.

Amanda married Khrystopher J. Skeans on August 5, 2020. She enjoyed doing a multitude of crafts and watching true crime documentaries. Amanda loved spending time with her family and her beloved dog Athena.

Amanda is survived by her husband Khrystopher Skeans of Andrews, Indiana; two daughters Kylie Finton of Muncie, Indiana, and Kiara Finton of Andrews, Indiana; one son Gauge Finton of Huntington, Indiana; her mother Malissa Timmons of Picayune, Mississippi; stepdaughter Ryleigh-Ann Skeans of Columbia City, Indiana; two brothers Bradley Lawrence of LaFontaine, Indiana, and John Lawrence of Kokomo, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her father Scott Lawrence, who passed away on August 11, 2014.

Eric Glen Rody

Eric Glen Rody, 55, of Kokomo, passed away at 2:35 p.m., on August 19, 2026, surrounded by family at IU Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana.

He was born February 5, 1971, the son of the late Ora Glen Rody, Jr., and Fannie Rody, who survives.

Eric attended Northwestern High School and Ball State University. He went on to work in the financial field and later worked for Marsh, General Motors, and Wabash International. He enjoyed coin and gun collecting, classic cars, marching bands, and working out. He really loved metal and experimental electronic music.

On March 2, 2007, he married Kristen Michelle Rody (Dawson) and spent 16 wonderful years with her until her passing on June 14, 2023.

Eric was an active member of the Connexion Church (formerly known as St. Luke’s United Methodist Church). Eric loved the outdoors, cooking, and spending time with family. He had a tremendous sense of humor, warm laughter, generous spirit, and deep love for his family, friends, and church. He was an amazing father and an even better man who changed the lives of those around him.

Eric is survived by his son Liam Rody and stepson Tyler Born; his mother Fannie Rody, who through her love, guidance, strength, and kindness, shaped Eric into the extraordinary person who everyone came to love and admire. He also leaves behind sisters Cindy (Tom) Hazelgrove and Denise (Greg) Seiter; brothers Scot Rody, Bret (Julie) Rody, and Brian Rody; uncle Sandy (Marilyn) Lowe; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Eric was preceded in death by his wife of 16 years Kristen Rody (Dawson); his father Ora Glen Rody, Jr.; and his grandparents.

Tracy T. Talbert

Tracy T. Talbert, 62, of Fairmount, Indiana, passed away on August 27, 2026, in Fairmount. He was born on November 22, 1963, in Kokomo, Indiana.

Tracy was a union electrician with IBEW #873 in Kokomo, Indiana. He was a hardworking man who also found great enjoyment in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed playing golf and liked being outdoors, working in the yard. He loved being with family and friends, and his playful spirit showed in the fun he had throwing golf balls into the pool and then diving in after them. He also enjoyed riding his Harley.

At the heart of Tracy’s life were the people and companions he loved. He is survived by his sisters Terra Dickman and Tina Baldwin, and by his niece Ciera Brooks. He is also survived by his beloved puppy Sally, who went everywhere with him and was a constant source of companionship.

He was preceded in death by his wife Theresa Talbert; his father Rex Talbert; his mother Marilyn Talbert; his brother Tony Talbert; and his sister Tammy Closser. Their memories remained an important part of his life.

Cremation will take place through Raven Choate Robinson Funeral Home, 1202 West Kem Road, Marion, Indiana 46952.

Tracy will be remembered for his love of family and friends, his enjoyment of the outdoors, and the spirited way he lived his life.

Hand Up Pantry

The Center Township Trustee’s Office holds its Hand Up Food Pantry at the township office, 213 E. Jefferson St., every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9-11 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. The goal is to serve those experiencing food insecurity. Participants must make an appointment by calling 765-452-8259. A photo ID or proof of address is required. The township is accepting donations of canned vegetables, fruit, and beans, instant potatoes, soup, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, rice, cereal, oatmeal, boxed macaroni and cheese, and shelf-stable milk. Drone Certification

Ivy Tech Community College will offer an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification Pre Course on Sept. 4 and Sept. 11. The cost of this two-day course is $317, and lunch will be provided each day. Participants will receive a test preparation guide and will be instructed on how to read charts, check weather conditions, and plan safe flights. They also will learn pre-flight procedures, how to operate aircraft systems, risk management, and more. Greentown Farmers Market

“The Oldest People in Howard County Cemeteries” was presented Aug. 12, 2026, at Indiana University Kokomo in the lovely Kresge auditorium. This was a part of the “America at 250 Howard County and Beyond” Lecture Series organized by the Howard County Historical Society.

The event was well attended by community members, and it was engaging. Citizens, which included family members of some of the historical figures mentioned in the presentation, were intrigued by the information.

When the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, the area that would become Howard County, Indiana, was home to Native peoples along the Wildcat Creek in the Great Miami Reserve. For America 250 events, Howard County Historian Gil Porter has been working with the Howard County Historical Society to help look at that shared history and commemorate national and local history right here in Kokomo.

On Aug. 12 at Indiana University Kokomo, Porter shared information about people born in the American colonies before or during the Revolution, who later came to Howard County, allowing us to explore colonial history through their life stories. “The Oldest People in Howard County Cemeteries” was the third part of the series in “America at 250: Howard County and Beyond.” This event was organized by Alyssa Witter-Pier and Anne Shaw at the Historical Society.

During the lecture, Porter emphasized that the history of Kokomo, a Miami-Illinois language word of unknown meaning, is a shared history.

“Our stories do not begin in 1844 when the county was organized, or even in 1776,” he said. “Native people have raised their families and honored their ancestors here along the Wildcat Creek for at least 10,000 years. They are still here.”

As part of that shared history connection to America at 250, Porter explained how federal, state, and county land records help us discover details about the lives and livelihoods of people born before 1780 who came to live and work in the county.

“We have two Revolutionary War veterans, the widow of a member of the Kentucky Militia of George Rogers Clark, and a formerly enslaved free woman of color from Virginia named Aliff Henley, who was the first Black American to buy land here,” Porter said.

The cemetery with the most people from that era, Porter noted, is the Friends cemetery at New London, Indiana.

“America at 250 [years old] is a great time to collect and preserve the stories about people who have lived here for centuries,” Porter said. “It is a unique opportunity to connect to the past with present-tense conversations as we commemorate this time in American history.”

Communications Specialist, Indiana University Kokomo

Nearly 70 students wore the red scrubs that mark them as Indiana University Kokomo nursing students for the first time during the School of Nursing and Allied Health Professions’ traditional induction ceremony on Wednesday (August 19).

The new students, selected through a rigorous acceptance process, each crossed the Havens Auditorium stage, receiving a certificate of accomplishment, and recited the Nursing Pledge, a promise to uphold the ethics of the nursing profession. The Indiana Nurse Honor Guard also participated in the ceremony.

Assistant Dean Stephanie Pratt welcomed students, faculty, staff, and family and friends to the ceremony, calling it “the start of a wonderful journey.” She said acceptance into nursing school is a gift they will use to make a difference.

“On this journey, you will have the opportunity to give a gift with the gift you have been given, and isn’t that splendid,” she said. “We are given the opportunity to serve, to share in life’s journey with others. There truly is nothing small about this wonderful privilege that you have been given, to become a nurse.”

Julie Saam, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, also offered congratulations.

“Nurses hold vital jobs in our communities, and thus they are held to high standards,” Saam said. “Not just anyone can become a nurse, and we have high standards for our nursing students. I am certain that the journey that brought you to our program today required your significant talent, effort, sacrifice, and perseverance, and I commend you for all that you have done to get where you are today.”

Dean Angela Opsahl said nursing requires a high level of proficiency, skill, ethical responsibility, and heartfelt dedication, and that nursing is a calling that blends clinical expertise with compassion and empathy. The school’s rigorous curriculum, hands-on clinical training, and access to outstanding faculty, along with opportunities to work in the nursing foundations skills lab, the simulation center, and community clinical practice sites will prepare them to meet the challenges of a dynamic healthcare landscape, Opsahl said, and encouraged them to take part in student life, to build relationships, and grow personally.

“Remember, you are not alone,” she said. “Our faculty and staff are here to guide and support you. Lean on and embrace your classmates, respect your differences, and build a community rooted in care and collaboration.”

Brian Arwood, assistant professor of nursing, encouraged family members to provide support behind the scenes.

“You are the foundation that will hold them steady when the weight of this journey feels heavy,” he said. “Nursing is not just a career, it’s a calling that demands resilience, compassion, and courage. And while our students will learn the science and the skills here, the strength to keep going often comes from home. From you.”

Sarah Elizabeth Smith, 49, passed away on August 22, 2026, with her family by her side. She was born September 11, 1976, in Kokomo, Indiana, to Dorothy “Dottie” Salsbery and Troy Smith Jr.

On June 2, 2010, Sarah married Kevin Little. Their marriage marked a cherished chapter of companionship and shared life, held close by those who knew and loved them.

For 10 years, Sarah served as a cook at the Sheriff’s Department, a role that reflected her steady dedication and the quiet, meaningful ways she cared for others through daily work. Whether preparing meals or offering a familiar presence, she brought reliability and purpose to those around her.

Sarah found joy in sewing, cooking and baking, singing, and watching anything about the royal family.

She is survived by her children Cameron (Maria) Smith, Jaquail Smith, Kearah (Cory) Holiday, Kevin (Tonnette) Gilbert-Little, Michael (Adrienne) Little, Tonika Milan, Erika (John) Cunningham, Ernest (Brittany) Little, Keisha Little, Flonicia (Cameron) Fletcher, and Victor Little, parents Dorothy “Dottie” Salsbery (Dakota Gee) and Troy Smith Jr. (Renee), siblings Virginia Nix, Troy (Michelle) Smith, Paris Smith, Gloria Jean Holman, Ernest Little, Wendall Little, and Angela Lewis; 18 grandchildren; one aunt; one uncle; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Sarah was preceded in death by her husband Kevin Little, brother-in-law Christopher Nix, and her grandparents.

Visitation will be held at Ellers Mortuary & Crematory Center, 3400 S. Webster Street, Kokomo, Indiana 46902, on August 28, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will follow at 12:00 p.m. Sarah will be laid to rest at Albright Cemetery.

Sonja Lavonne Hanawalt

Sonja Lavonne Hanawalt, 88, Logansport, Indiana, went to be with Jesus Tuesday evening, August 25, 2026. Her passing was peaceful, something she had longed for as kidney disease made life harder. She missed her husband and her parents deeply and looked forward to the day she could be with them again.

Born April 22, 1938, in Howard County, Sonja adored her parents Denzel S. “Holly” and Ida (Lynas) Hollingsworth.

A 1956 graduate of Logansport High School, Sonja was active in swing band, orchestra, marching band, music club and Hi Tri. She continued her education at Indiana University for a year and a half before returning home.

On February 12, 1961, in Cass County, she married Eugene Perry “Sam” Hanawalt. Sam and Sonja were one of those couples people remember - kind, always smiling and inseparable. Sam passed away February 23, 2015, and Sonja counted the days until their reunion in Heaven.

Gifted with numbers, Sonja worked many years for the United Methodist Ministers Credit Union. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, now the Church of the Good Shepherd, where she served as financial secretary. Music was her passion. She rang bells in the bell choir, sang in the choir, and her baby grand piano was the heart of her home.

For more than 40 years, Sonja belonged to Delta Theta Chi sorority and treasured the friendships she made there. As a young girl, she was part of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls and later joined the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid reader and a skilled seamstress who could make anything she set her mind to.

Sonja is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Doug and Karen Hanawalt of Indianapolis; her daughter and son-in-law Susan and Jason Peters of Kokomo; two grandchildren Jake and Sara Hanawalt; four step-grandchildren Nathan, Luke, Elizabeth, and Amelia Peters; 10 step-great-grandchildren; two sisters Joyce Timler of Pendleton, IN, and Judith (husband Gary) Price of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Sonja dearly missed her granddaughter Lauren Hanawalt, gone too soon in 2021 at the age of 19, after courageously battling a rare form of cancer for five years. Also preceding in death were her sister Patricia Cottrell and two brothers-in-law John Fewell and John Cottrell.

A Memorial Service celebrating Sonja’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 30, in Fisher Funeral Chapel. Chaplain Allen Wright will be officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Joyce Mae (Mount) Fields

Joyce Mae (Mount) Fields, age 89, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2026, after a short illness. Joyce was born in Linton, Indiana, on July 17, 1937.

She grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana, where she graduated from Wiley High School in the Class of 1955. It was in Terre Haute where Joyce met her next-door neighbor Harold Leroy Fields, who would become her senior prom date and the love of her life. The high school sweethearts married on August 10, 1956, and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

While Joyce worked professionally as a bookkeeper, she dedicated much of her life to her family as a homemaker and by volunteering in her church and community. When her children were young, Joyce was involved in their activities, serving as a PTO president and a 4-H Club leader. As her children grew into teenagers, she continued her involvement as a youth group counselor at Main Street United Methodist Church, where she was a dedicated member for over 50 years. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Kokomo Kiwanis Club.

Joyce along with her husband Harold were ballroom dancers and founding members of the Delco Dance Club. They also volunteered for the Kokomo Community Concerts, where Joyce routinely took the top honor of selling the most season tickets. The couple loved traveling and were members of the Community First Bank’s travel club. For more than 20 years, they spent winters in their Sebring, Florida, home. Joyce loved gardening, playing cards, decorating her home, shopping, and dining out.

She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas Mount and Edna Steele; stepfather Robert Steele; stepmother Jean Mount; brother Rickie Steele; sister-in-law Judith Susie Steele; and her dear aunts Marian Fiscus and Sondra Love.

Joyce’s legacy of love lives on through her surviving family. She leaves behind her beloved husband Harold; two children Thomas Fields and Deneice Jarrett (Robin); brother Steve Mount (Ann); granddaughters Rachel Day (Danny) and Hannah Freiherr (Greg); and step-granddaughters Alexis Jarrett (Jon Kuhn), Amanda Jarrett, and Abigail Jarrett (Quoc Duong). She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Monday, August 31, at Main Street United Methodist Church, 830 South Main Street, Kokomo, Indiana. Funeral services immediately following. Guests are invited to join the family for a celebration meal at the church after the funeral. Interment will be at Sunset Memory Gardens.

Martha A. “Marty” Meng

Martha A. “Marty” Meng, 91, of Tipton, was born in Conception Junction, Missouri, on August 29, 1934. Her parents were Leo Joseph and Catherine Leota (Van Vactor) Protzman. Marty married James L. Meng on September 14, 1957, and after 61 years of marriage, Jim passed away on November 18, 2018. Marty passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at IU Health – Tipton Hospital (formerly Tipton County Memorial Hospital), where she had dedicated her career as a nurse for many years, retiring in 1991.

Marty graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Delaware, Ohio, and then from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Altar/Rosary Society.

Marty is survived by her four children Timothy J. Meng and husband Mike Goldschlag of Ft. White, Florida, Mark D. Meng of Tipton, Mary A. Meng of Clive, Iowa, and Emma L. Teyema of Tipton; and three grandchildren Madison Gruel, Natalie Teyema, and Darian (Dakota) Brock.

She is survived by her siblings Catherine (Paul) Schieber of Maryville, Missouri, Alicia (Harold) Lewis of Graham, Missouri, Emma Kennedy of Bethany, Missouri, F. Herbert (Arla) Protzman of Midwest City, Oklahoma, and James (Terry) Protzman of Conception Junction, Missouri. Marty was preceded in death by her siblings Leo and Paul Protzman, Mary Runde, and Patricia Johnson.

A funeral mass for Marty will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 335 Mill Street, Tipton, Indiana, 46072, with Rev. Adam Mauman presiding. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Tipton. Visitation will be from 4:00–8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 31, at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, with a Wake and Rosary service starting at 4:00 p.m.

Larry Joe Hight

Larry Joe Hight, 81, of Tipton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of his dear family. He was born on March 12, 1945, in Kokomo, Indiana, to Joe and Betty (Hoff) Hight.

Larry attended Oak Hill High School and then proudly served his country in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Specialist Four (SP4). Following his military service, Larry built a long career with Chrysler Corporation, where he worked for 31 years before retiring from the casting plant.

On March 31, 1964, Larry married the love of his life Linda Lou (Bowland) Hight. Linda preceded Larry in death on August 13, 2012. The two shared 48 wonderful years together, filled with love, laughter, family, and the simple moments that meant the most.

If you knew Larry, chances are he made you laugh. He was sassy, playful, rarely serious, and almost never angry. He had a gift for bringing happiness wherever he went, and making sure the people around him were happy was incredibly important to him. Whether he was telling a joke, sneaking up to give someone a good jump scare, or flashing that familiar smile, Larry knew how to make life a little more fun. He never knew a stranger and seemed to make friends everywhere he went.

Even the smallest things became part of what made Larry unforgettable. He was rarely without Werther’s candy tucked into his pocket, ready to hand one to someone who crossed his path. Even during his time in the hospital, the candy remained close by, because Larry was always thinking about how he could brighten someone else’s day.

Larry loved being outdoors and could happily spend his time fishing, hunting, or searching for arrowheads. He had a special appreciation for old cars and enjoyed restoring them, attending car shows, and spending time with the Tipton Car Club. His beloved 1940 Pontiac Silver Streak was a particular source of pride. And, of course, there was always time for a good cup of coffee and a nice meal from Crazy Omelette.

Music was another important part of Larry’s life. He played guitar and sang with his family in a band, creating memories that will continue to bring smiles for years to come.

Above all else, Larry was a family man. His family meant everything to him, and he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He loved deeply, laughed often, and made certain the people he loved knew how important they were to him. His faith was an important foundation in his life. He attended First Church of the Nazarene and made it a priority to take his family to church, passing along the faith that guided him throughout his life.

Larry carried his joy with him all the way through his final days. Even in his last moments, his smile remained, a fitting reflection of the way he lived his life: finding happiness, sharing laughter, loving his family, and wanting those around him to smile right along with him.

Left to carry on Larry’s legacy of love and laughter are his daughters Mindy Moore, Lisa Walden (Jake), and Jessica Hughes (Kyle); grandchildren Kayla Hein (Jamison), Tyler Clark, Ally Byerly (Tim), Hope Ayers (Dawson), Alyssa Moore, Alex Geiger (Grace), Logan Brumfiel, Selena Brumfiel, Abygail Hill, Axl Hughes, Hendrix Hughes, and Elijah Hughes; great-grandchildren Beckett Ayers and Fletcher Ayers; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends he gathered along the way.

Larry was welcomed into Heaven by his parents Joe and Betty Hight; his beloved wife Linda Hight; daughter Tammy Edens; siblings Bruce Hight, Tracy Hight, and Terri Hight; and grandson Samuel Clark.

A visitation for Larry will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Taylor & Cowan Funeral Home, with an additional time of visitation on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. His funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, with Pastor Josh Nichols officiating. Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 46.

Larry’s favorite daughter? Still to be determined!

Alberta Lee Meadors

Alberta Lee Meadors, 69, of Kokomo, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo. She was born October 11, 1956, in Tipton, Indiana, to John Cass and Lavada (Acord) Gist. She married Rick A. Meadors on July 14, 1984, and he survives.

Alberta loved life and all of her family. She is survived by her spouse Rick A. Meadors of Kokomo and her children Joseph Cass, Lacy Cass, and Shalee Meadors. Surviving grandchildren include Lavada Koon, Kolton Koon, Bela Cass, Isaiah Cass, and Caden Cass. She is also survived by one brother, two sisters, and her grandpup Lucy. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Rebecca Maroney

Becky passed away on Friday, August 21, 2026, at her residence. She was born on October 4, 1942, to Joe H. and Reba (Engleman) Mullins at St. Joseph Hospital, Kokomo, Ind. She attended Lincoln Elementary in Kokomo until her family moved to the country, and she attended Howard Elementary starting in the 5th grade. Becky graduated from Northwestern High in 1960. She spent four years in band, choir, girls’ barbershop quartet, and cheerleading; and was a member of Honor Society and other clubs and activities.

After high school, Becky attended Ball State Teachers’ College (now University). She earned an associate business degree so she would have skills to work while her husband-to-be finished veterinary school at Purdue University. He had completed three years but still had another three years to finish. Becky married her high school sweetheart Mike Maroney, July 7, 1962, at Grace Methodist Church, Kokomo. She then worked at West Lafayette Jr. High School/Kingston Elementary as secretary to both principals. Mike graduated with his DVM from Purdue in 1965.

When her sons were both in grade school in 1973, Becky returned to college at IUK to pursue nursing. She had to attend part-time, but did finish the Associate Degree and passed the boards and became a Registered Nurse in 1977. Becky worked at two nursing homes in Kokomo. Then, in her last 10 years, she worked at Sycamore Primary Care for Dr. Jim Whitfield. She retired from there in 1997 to stay home to care for Mike, who had a terminal disease. He died on April 10, 1999.

Both Mike and Becky were long-time members of First Baptist Church, Kokomo, and were active in various offices and committees in the church.

Becky served on the Northwestern School Board for one term (four years). She was honored to present both sons their diplomas at graduation: Tim ‘85 and Tom ‘88.

Becky loved being with her two sons and their families. Her most favorite hobby was taking photographs at various family gatherings. Placing all the photos in albums provided a pictorial history of the Maroney family: 35 albums.

Becky is survived by her two sons: Timothy Scott (Melissa) and Thomas Michael (Heather); grandchildren Austin W. Maroney, Meghan L. and Kaden Smith, “TJ” and Brittany Maroney, and Mike and Tayler Wyrick, all of Kokomo; great-grandchildren Zaylee Maroney, Cyrus Scott Smith, Madalynn Maroney, Weston Maroney, Natalie Wyrick, Declan Wyrick, and Wrenley Quinn Wyrick; brother-in-law David Maroney and Judy of Ladoga, Ind.; nephews Ryun and Andrea Cook, A.J. and Aiden of North Carolina, and Casey and Rachel Cook and Jack of Michigan (Ryun and Casey are Becky’s sister Marlene’s sons); and nephews from David’s first marriage Chris Maroney and Susan of Carmel, Ind., and Mike Maroney and Peggy of Zionsville, Ind.

Preceding Becky in death were her husband Mike; her sister Marlene Russell; her parents Joe and Reba Mullins, and her in-laws Gerald and Alice Maroney.

Ellers is assisting the family with burial arrangements. At Becky’s request there will be no visitation. Her family will attend Becky’s burial beside her husband Mike at Zion Church Cemetery, which is just a few miles from the Maroney farm.

The City of Kokomo crept closer this week to establishing some development standards for a potential data center. But the efforts of the administration of Mayor Tyler Moore and the Kokomo Common Council have gone greatly unappreciated to date.

The council held a first hearing on an ordinance to set limits on data centers at its Aug. 24 meeting, and the chambers filled with angry citizens ready to resume their months-long fight. The hearing began with ground rules from council president Greg Davis: sign up to speak; two-minute time limit; stay on topic.

Bryan Stumpf, PLA, AICP, Studio Lead for Community Development with HWC Engineering, which assisted in developing the ordinance, was then called to the microphone to explain the process that resulted in the ordinance under consideration. He explained that the legislation was developed with a steering committee, though the members of that committee were not disclosed.

Stumpf identified the three areas affected by the proposed ordinance. One is compliance with changes in state law, which allows schools to be placed in any zoning district, indoor shooting ranges to occupy agricultural, commercial, and industrial districts, and retail sporting goods stores in more commercial districts.

The second area involves adjusting heights and setbacks for medium and heavy industrial zones, allowing small residential units in certain residential zoning, addressing lot coverage, residential use in downtown as it pertains to parking, fence and wall standards, expanded greenspace requirements in parking lots, encouraging electric vehicle charging stations, and expanded “grandfather” exemptions to certain buildings.

But the crowd and the concern is focused on the proposed ordinance’s third area of effect: data centers.

“Currently they are permitted by right, and with the ordinance that exists today, they can be built 35 feet from the property line next to a residential home, with only a five-foot fence,” said Stumpf. “So, the concern is no one wants to see that happen. We’ve looked at the information that was provided, the meetings you had over the past several months, and have created a new section 6.75 with standards specific to data centers.”

Stumpf explained that the changes will establish a 200-foot setback from a property line with a residential use, including a 300-foot minimum setback from an existing home. It also would require power lines to be setback at least 100 feet from the property line. There are restrictions on equipment testing and demands for a landscaping buffer between the data center and the rest of the world.

“Right now, you could do it with just a five-foot fence,” said Stumpf. “In here, we’re specifying that you have to install a five-foot berm with evergreens planted no more than 12 feet apart, all the way through to create a solid buffer.”

The proposed changes also would require a data center developer to fully disclose any phased expansion plans.

Knowing of the criticisms that have arisen in Kokomo regarding the proposed changes, Stumpf tried to address them before they were raised again.

“Many of the recommendations we saw come through, such as decommissioning plans, roadway maintenance agreements, first responder training, things like that, those are operations issues, not land use issues,” said Stumpf. “It’s not appropriate for them to be in the land use ordinance. They more appropriately belong in a development agreement.

“Some of these things aren’t in here (because) they’re already addressed in your ordinance. Right now, your ordinance identifies that sustained noise cannot exceed 50 decibels adjacent to a residential use. That’s actually a lower number than what we’re seeing in other communities and ordinances we help with their data centers.

“Your ordinance already addresses building size, so the LI district, your light industrial district, is capped at a maximum of total building area 400 square feet. Your MI district caps the total square footage at 1,200 square feet. A hyperscale data center would have to be in the HI district.”

Stumpf added that some utility requirements already exist in the zoning ordinance as well, though it only requires that the needed utilities are present. He then warned that land uses of similar scale and intensity must be treated equally or risk legal challenges.

“We have a 200-foot setback that has a logical connection between the concerns about the scale of the building and the noise level to that distance,” said Stumpf. “It would be inappropriate to say, ‘Well, 200 feet is good; 2,000 feet is great.’ You lose that connection open yourself up to potential legal challenges.”

With no questions from the council concerning the content of the ordinance or how it came about, the floor was opened to the public. Immediately, there were calls for water usage studies, increased setbacks, construction timeframes, and increased limits on light and noise pollution. Resident Brooke Walsh cautioned the council that inaction on community concerns will have political consequences.

“The people are growing more and more restless every day, and we’re losing respect for the people for which they once voted,” said Walsh. “Every decision you make seems to go against the people of Kokomo, and trust me, we notice.”

Resident Linda Kendall resurrected the idea of a moratorium on data center development so that the council could examine things like water usage, energy consumption, and noise pollution. Davis chose to respond to the suggestion.

“There was conversation about moratorium, and the council at that time did not have a majority who would support a moratorium,” said Davis.

Davis then read a communique he received from Councilman Jeff Plough, who was unsuccessful in finding support on the council for a moratorium.

“… As additional time was devoted to research and evaluation, it became evident that a data center moratorium alone would not adequately address the broader issues due to the inherent limitations of such a measure,” Plough wrote. “Further analysis also demonstrated that moratoriums are of temporary nature and do not provide a permanent solution. Additionally, a moratorium focused solely on data centers would not apply to other industrial-scale developments that could potentially locate within the industrial park.”

Seeing no path forward with a moratorium, Plough relayed to Davis a desire to strengthen “development standards, requirements, and expectations” for potential industrial investments.

“There’s been a collaborative effort with Councilman Plough’s committee, with the director of development for the City of Kokomo, with Director Greg Sheline from Plan Commission, and also HWC,” said Davis. “All these people came together. They took into consideration all the things that people have talked about and brought up as concerns …

“A moratorium was just kicking the can down the road as far as we were concerned. We wanted to address the real problems.”

Davis then took shelter from responding to specific details concerning data centers because the council doesn’t have a data center proposal in front of them.

“We’re simply talking about updating our zoning ordinances for anything that would come into that industrial park,” said Davis.

Resident Wendy Selley took a different approach. Instead of opposing what is being considered, she asked how public commentary might prompt changes to the proposed ordinance.

“As people have recommendations for changes in this document, how do they submit those changes, and what will be the process to potentially get those changes included in the next reading,” Selley asked.

Councilman Matt Grecu encouraged residents to email him with changes to consider. Davis said he was writing down the concerns raised.

“It’s not falling on deaf ears,” said Davis. “I’m writing those down to consider over the next few weeks.”

Following public comment, the council called for the vote. The ordinance passed 6-2 on first reading, with Plough and Councilman Bob Stephenson voting against the measure. Councilwoman Crystal Sanburn was not in attendance. Stephenson’s reasoning for voting no was explained on Facebook and in a letter to the editor published in the Kokomo Lantern.

The council will consider the ordinance again on its second reading, which will take place Mon., Sept. 14, at 6 p.m., in the council chambers at City Hall. An informational meeting will precede the hearing at 5:30 p.m.

Janet “Sue” Martin, 87, of Russiaville, passed away at 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at Bloom at Kokomo. She was born November 7, 1938, in Kokomo, Indiana, the daughter of Hubert G. and Marjorie E. (Richardson) Hightower. On August 11, 1957, she married Earl Robert “Bob” Martin at Courtland Avenue Friends Church in Kokomo, and he preceded her in death on October 10, 2016.

Sue was a 1957 graduate of Kokomo High School. She was a devoted homemaker who loved caring for her family and spending time with those she loved. She was a member of New London Friends Church and the Kokomo Shrine Club Women’s Guild. Sue enjoyed playing BINGO and dominoes and cherished the fellowship and friendships she built throughout her life.

Sue is survived by her children Deborah Martin, Jeff (Rose) Martin, Kim (Don) Markham, and Polly (Mark) Sowers; grandchildren Joshua (Cayla) Markham, Sarah (Josh) White, Adam (Staci) Sowers, Brandi Sowers, Andrew (Rebekah) Martin, Alexandra Martin, Eric (Johnna) Markham, Annalyssa (Drew) Overley, and Anastasia Martin; 12 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Jo Hightower; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bob Martin; sister Carolyn Tunison and husband Gary; brother Thomas Hightower; and nieces Lynn and Carol.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo, with Pastor Jason Grant officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Garden. Friends are invited to visit with the family from noon until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Norma Jean Cochran

Norma Jean Cochran, 93, of Kokomo, Indiana, passed away on August 24, 2026, at her home. She was born on September 20, 1932, to Harry and Clara (Liston) Cochran in Tipton County, Indiana. Jean worked at General Motors for 35 years before retiring.

Jean loved volunteering at the Kokomo Rescue Mission Toy Donation Center for many years. Her volunteer work was a very important part of her life. She also volunteered at St. Joe and as a school bus driver for many years. Traveling was also important to Jean. Her adventures included Germany and Hawaii.

Left to cherish her memory are her nephews John Hale of Ft. Wayne and Chuck Cochran of Lafayette; niece Marlene Hale of Kokomo; great-nephew Mike Hale; friends Beverly Suddarth and Julie (Phil) Good of Kokomo; and honorary nieces and nephews Brian (Judy) Good, William Good, Rebecca (Andrew) Virnich, Beverly (Bill) Hapner, and Phillip Good.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings Gladys and Bill.

Jacqueline “Jackie” S. Kelly

Jacqueline “Jackie” S. Kelly, 78, of Kokomo, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, August 15, 2026, at Northwoods Village Nursing Home in Kokomo. She was born January 18, 1948, in Elwood, Indiana, to Chester and Thelma (DeWitt) Quick. On January 21, 1967, she married the love of her life David A. Kelly, and he preceded her in death on March 1, 2020.

Jacqueline worked as a bookkeeper in the welding/fabricating industry. She enjoyed all kinds of crafts, bowling, playing euchre, and catering. She was a member of Cassville United Methodist Church and the Northwestern Alumni Association. Jacqueline and David were heavily involved in the student foreign exchange program for many years. Jacqueline was an “honorary mom” for many students from several foreign countries throughout the world.

Surviving family include her children Lynette (Larry Deon) Wilson of Kokomo, Jennifer (Shannon) Mabry of Kokomo, and Scott Kelly of Kokomo. Surviving grandchildren include Jordan (Abby) Wilson, Courtney (Tyler) Howe, Hannah (Brandon) Carden, Cierra Wilson, Chelsea (Brayden) Nutter, Caleb Mabry, Tommy (Sequoyha) Lunsford, Bryson Mabry, Zachary DeFabritis, Susan Kelly, and David Kelly. Surviving great-grandchildren include Kristianna Bowman, Elliana Wilson, Abram Wilson, Eamon Bowman, Leah Howe, Blake Howe, Kimber Carden, Zedekiah Lunsford, Lunaria Wilson, Asher Howe, Briar Carden, and Beau Nutter. One sister also survives, Rhonda Tschudy of Kokomo. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband David.

Richard V. Bradley

When a fine person dies, we celebrate a life well-lived.

A brilliant mind has been dimmed. An outspoken man is now quiet.

The bones of his story; his parents Edward and Helen, his sisters Delores and Gloria, and his brother Ken helped create the man he became.

He grew up in Northwest Indiana and graduated from I.U. medical school. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He was a member of the AMA and the Indiana State Medical Association. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Reserves.

Brad practiced medicine in Kokomo and later started the first full-time ER at Community Howard.

During his years of practice, he especially enjoyed delivering babies.

Brad loved his family with all his heart. He cherished his wife Janet and daughters Janet (Jim), Carol, and Laura (Doc). He was proud of his grandchildren Nicki (Arthur), Melissa, Vanessa (Alex), Mitchell (Ellen), and Haley (Neil); also, his great-granddaughters Sierra, Sophia, Anna, Hazel, Vera, Tilly, Etta, and Ruth.

He wished for them all much success and happiness.

He enjoyed fishing and gardening. He liked walking his dogs Mr. Fonz and Max. He looked forward each year to feeding the hummingbirds and watching eaglets hatch.

Brad treasured his trips to the Canadian north woods with Janet.

He had a life-long love of learning and was curious about most everything.

Brad would watch complicated programs on business or science and then laugh out loud at Eric, Stan, and Kyle on South Park.

He was a long-suffering Chicago White Sox fan. He enjoyed Notre Dame football, I.U. basketball and NASCAR. During the Winter Olympics, he developed a fascination with curling.

He had a deep belief in God about which he was very private.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law Joan.

Brad was an exceptional person who will be missed.

Purple and white balloons filled the skies over Kokomo on Mon., Aug. 24, at the Overdose Awareness Night of Hope was held in Foster Park. Hundreds were in attendance to remember those who lost their fights against addiction and to celebrate those who are still in the battle.

Dozens of local organizations committed to assisting in the recovery from addiction were on hand to share information and resources for those seeking freedom from drugs and alcohol. And a free hot dog meal was offered to all in attendance. There also was a raffle held to reward a lucky participant.

The performing arts stage in the park was occupied by various speakers who shared encouragement, an accounting of efforts made to fight addiction over the previous year, and personal accounts of the struggle.

Jane Pauley Community Health Center CEO Marc Hackett, JPCHC Board Member Paul Wyman, Turning Point System of Care Director Jackie Lewis, and Mayor Tyler Moore all spoke on the importance of the event and on recovery efforts in the community. To close, a Turning Point System of Care patient, Janelle, spoke about her experience of recovery and offered words of encouragement to the crowd.

Following the presentations, the crowd was invited to come to the stage and write the names of those lost to addiction ones on a banner to commemorate the event. And they were given balloons to later release in remembrance.

Dozens of those in attendance came forward to announce the length of their recovery, receiving applause and encouragement. And then the balloons were launched, reminding the community that the fight against addiction is not over and that there no longer needs to be a stigma surrounding the affliction.
