I would become convinced that something was true about me, trust it completely, and then watch it fall apart within weeks.

I have rebuilt my entire operating system, inner and outer, more times than I can count.

This is the story of one of those rebuilds, and the method it left behind.

The Reverse Engineering

At one point, I decided I wanted to become a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Manager.

I was working as a Product Specialist at the time, and I was nowhere near the room I wanted to be in.

So I did what I always do when I want something: I reverse-engineered the path.

I was already teaching myself everything I could about DEI, and I loved talking about it, talking about it, so now it was just doing something about it.

So I turned the learning into a conversation. That is how the VIBE podcast began, a show built around asking people about their experience of corporate life.

Its purpose was simple: to open up conversations that mattered, from diversity and inclusion to what it really takes to hold a growth mindset inside a corporate structure that often resists both.

We talked about passion, growth mindset, discrimination at work, and the experience of changing your name to land the job you actually wanted.

It was by placing myself in the room.

What started as a way to learn became something else: a real education in what people actually live through.

I became the leader of internal community groups for women and Black employees, and I started sitting in on C-suite conversations about how to make the workplace better.

I knew what I wanted, so I placed myself wherever the conversation was happening.

Not because it was strategic, but because I cared.

And then, suddenly, the job existed. It had been created for me. I held the contract.

I had manifested the reality I wanted, not by forcing it, but by stepping into it and letting myself be shaped by it.

Six months in, the company was acquired.

What I thought I had signed up for, building programs, shaping culture from the inside, became something much bigger and much harder.

For the next two years, I led DEI through the acquisition itself: retention, uncertainty, and people wondering daily whether they would have a job.

Then the war in Ukraine broke out.

Conflict escalated in the Middle East.

None of that stayed outside the walls of the company.

It all became part of what I was responsible for holding for people who were frightened and looking for someone to make sense of the ground shifting under them.

Eventually, I was let go. Not because of me, but due to the tec worlds second largest aquasition.

The strategy from above had stopped aligning with the work on the ground. It was not the job I had planned when I first set out to reverse-engineer my way toward it.

It looked, instead, like the work I was actually meant to do.

What Manifestation Does Not Tell You

Here is the part almost nobody talks about: getting what you want does not automatically mean you are aligned with it.

Once the creation became real, a different problem appeared.

The impostor feeling.

I remember a new VP came in with a new DEI strategy and wanted to change it every three months.

But the acquisition had only just been announced, and uncertainty was at its peak.

People were still absorbing the possibility that their jobs could be lost.

My instinct was that the organization needed stabilization first, not another layer of movement. At that scale, with 30,000 people to bring along, a new strategy needed time to be integrated before it could be changed again.

I said that, but I said it too strongly.

He was well-liked by the team, and my words sounded less like concern for the people than criticism of him.

I meant it as care.

It landed as opposition.

I had not yet learned to be at peace with my own strength.

It came out of me like an uncontrolled current.

I could see the whole picture clearly, but I couldn’t always manage how I presented it.

And so the way some people perceived me stopped matching who I actually was.

You can want something with your whole self and still have to do the slower work of growing into it once it is yours.

That gap, between what I knew and what I was actually able to embody, is the reason I do what I do now.

I work as an interpretive strategist for people who are sensitive, ambitious, and quietly stuck in exactly this place: they have built the thing, landed the role, made the leap, and now have to close the distance between who they have become on paper and who they actually trust themselves to be out loud.

The Methodology

That experience of wanting something, getting it, and then discovering that the internal work had barely started is what led me to build a methodology I now use with the people I work with. I call it Name the Mismatch.

It has five moves:

1. Name the Mismatch — locate the place where your inner yes and your outer behavior have stopped matching.

2. Identify the Need — get underneath the hesitation and find what is actually driving it.

3. Redesign the Decision — instead of waiting for certainty, make the next move smaller and truer.

4. Take One Visible Step — turn the insight into something the world can actually see.

5. Observe What Changes — notice what settles once your actions finally match what you already know.

The Real Gap

Because here is what I have come to understand, working through this with myself and with others:

They already know the number they should be charging.

They already know the post they are too scared to publish.

They already know the relationship that has been over for a while.

They just have not let themselves act as they know it.

That gap, between what you feel is true and what you are actually doing about it, is the whole game.

Not confidence.

No more information.

Not a better plan.

Just that gap.

Closed.

When Self-Trust Becomes the Real Visibility Problem

Self-trust is often treated like a private issue.

Laila Azhar

Self-trust is often treated like a private issue.
But it isn’t.

It’s one of the main reasons visibility feels harder than it should.

When your inner yes and your outer behavior don’t match, every decision about being seen carries extra weight. I know this from experience.

For a long time, I couldn’t fully access my own power because I didn’t trust it. I would wake up ready to move, create, meet the day, and then, somewhere between intention and action, I would start negotiating with myself.

All the “buts,” the “hows,” the “whys,” the “later.”

By the end of the day, it wasn’t just that I had delayed the work. I had let down the version of me who woke up believing she would follow through.

That’s what self-trust really is.

Not a mood.
Not a personality trait.
It’s the evidence that you stand behind your own decisions.

This is also the foundation of how I think about visibility.

I don’t see it as a matter of pushing harder or doing more. I look at the gap between what someone knows internally and what they’re able to do externally.

That gap is where the real work is.

So I start by naming the mismatch.

Where is the inner yes getting lost?

In overthinking?
In the fear of being misunderstood?
In environments that pull you away from yourself?
Or in standards you keep lowering just to stay legible to others?

Once that’s clear, I look at what’s underneath the hesitation.

It’s not always a lack of confidence.

Sometimes it’s a need for safety.
Sometimes it’s clarity.
Sometimes it’s permission to stop performing and start telling the truth.
And sometimes it’s structure, so you’re no longer relying on your mood to act on what already matters to you.

From there, the decision gets redesigned.

Smaller. Cleaner. More honest.

Not easier in a way that avoids the truth, but clearer in a way that removes unnecessary friction.

The goal is simple: reduce the distance between what you know and what you do.

Then comes the visible step.

One move.

One sentence published instead of endlessly edited.
One boundary held without over-explaining.
One piece of work shared before every feeling is resolved.

That’s where self-trust becomes real.

And then you observe what actually changes.

Not just externally, but internally.

Does your nervous system settle?
Does your voice feel steadier?
Do you feel more coherent after acting, not because the outcome was perfect, but because the action matched what you knew?

This is the split most people live inside.

You know what you want to say, but you hesitate.
You know the kind of work you want to make, but you dilute it.
You know your standards, but you don’t always act in alignment with them.

That’s when visibility starts to feel heavy.

For me, it often looked like waking up ready, then slowly talking myself out of the day. A few hours later, the momentum was gone, and the negotiation had won.

That’s a costly pattern.

Every time you override yourself, you teach your nervous system that your clarity is optional.

That’s not a confidence problem.

It’s a self-trust problem.

And until that shifts, visibility will keep feeling expensive.

You’ll hesitate.
Over-explain.
Soften what you mean.
Wait for one more sign before acting.

And because you’re capable, you can make that hesitation sound reasonable.

You can call it strategy.
You can call it discernment.
You can call it timing.

But sometimes, it’s simply a refusal to fully back your own point of view.

The move isn’t to force more confidence.

It’s to practice cleaner self-reliance.

Reduce the distance between what you know and what you do.
Make smaller decisions on purpose.
Stand by them.
Act before every feeling is resolved.

Start with one thing:

One decision you’ve been postponing.
One sentence you keep editing.
One boundary you keep explaining.
One small public move that reflects what you actually think—not what feels safest.

What’s true.

That’s how self-trust starts to show up in your visibility.

Not as performance, but as alignment.

Your voice becomes less strained.
Your decisions get cleaner.
Visibility stops feeling like exposure and starts feeling like expression.

You don’t need to become louder.
You need to become more consistent with yourself.

That’s what makes people trust your work.

Not perfection.
Not polish.
Not constant certainty.

Coherence.

The more your outer actions match your inner knowing, the less expensive visibility becomes.

And the more you prove to yourself that you act on what you know, the stronger your self-trust gets.

That’s the shift.

Not more confidence.
More self-trust.

Not more performance.
More alignment.

The moment you stop negotiating with your own yes, visibility becomes much easier to carry.

If you wish to do the work?

I built the thing I actually needed

For the last few months, almost every conversation I’ve had, with clients, with friends, in my own head at 2 am, has had the same shape underneath it.

Someone already knows.

They know the number they should be charging.

They know the post they’re too scared to publish.

They know the relationship that’s been over for a while.

They just haven’t let themselves act as they know it.

That gap, between what you feel is true and what you’re actually doing about it, is the whole game.

Not confidence.

Not more information.

Not a better plan. Just that gap, closed.

So I built something to close it.

The Self-Trust Journal

It’s a 60-prompt guided journal, split into five moves:

Name the Mismatch — where your inner yes and your outer behavior have stopped matching

Identify the Need — what’s actually underneath the hesitation

Redesign the Decision — make the move smaller and truer instead of waiting for certainty

Take One Visible Step — turn the insight into something observable

Observe What Changes — notice what settles once action matches knowing

It’s not specific to money, or visibility, or relationships. look at a room, a sentence, a day, or a life and think: this would be better if it were clearer, or sometimes you don’t see it.

Most people try to fix “unclear” by adding.

You already know that your work gets stronger when you subtract.

Notice the mismatch

You know a lot.

You’ve collected ideas, tools, frameworks, and advice.

You can see possibilities everywhere.

But if you’re honest, you might also notice a mismatch between how much you know and how cleanly you use it.

Your calendar is full.

Your mind is crowded.

Your drafts are long.

Your standards are high.

And yet the thing you are trying to build, the brand, the career, the life, doesn’t always feel as sharp as your taste.

That is not a talent problem.

It is a refusal-to-edit problem.

Name the truth

Good taste is not just “liking nice things.”

It is the ability to recognize what does not belong in the final version.

It is the moment you realize that saying everything you know makes the work less trustworthy, not more.

In practice, that looks like:

Deleting the clever paragraph that distracts from the point.

Cutting the extra offer that muddies your value.

Saying no to the project that doesn’t fit your actual axis.

Removing the detail that exists only to prove you did your homework.

Bad taste throws everything in and hopes something lands.

Good taste chooses what deserves to stay.

Decide on the move

The move is simple and difficult:

You stop proving.

You start curating.

You decide what you are actually saying, and you let the rest go.

That means asking, in every context:

What is the job of this sentence?

What is the job of this product?

What is the job of this relationship, this meeting, this launch, this post?

If a detail, task, or obligation does not serve that job, good taste removes it.

Not because it is “bad.”

Because it is extra.

Take the action

Start with one place where your taste lives visibly: your writing.

Cut one paragraph that is pretty but unnecessary.

Remove one metaphor that exists only to show that you can write.

Delete one disclaimer that weakens the line that should carry your point.

Then translate the same decision into money and offers:

Strip one add-on from an offer that makes your value harder to understand.

Narrow the promise so it is clear what someone is actually paying for.

And into visibility and self-trust:

Stop sharing a part of your story that no longer represents who you are.

Let your public presence show your current standard, not an old performance.

You are not becoming minimal for aesthetics.

You are strengthening the signal.

Review the result

When you begin to leave things out deliberately, a few things change quickly:

Your work feels more decisive.

Your voice reads clearer.

Your days feel less performative.

Your offers feel more coherent.

You trust your own eye more.

Because good taste is not an inventory of everything you could do.

It is the discipline of choosing what is essential for this reader, this move, this moment — and letting everything else stay off the page.

The Alignment-to-Action Loop (Taste Edition)

You can use your method here:

Notice the mismatch: Where is there more than this moment actually needs?

Name the truth: Is this clutter about fear, proving, or lack of focus?

Decide the move: What gets cut, simplified, or removed?

Take the action: Delete, cancel, or narrow one thing now.

Review the result: Does the signal feel stronger? Does the work feel more like you?

Good taste is not just knowing what you like.

It is knowing what to leave out.

And the more often you act from that standard, the more your life, your writing, your offers, and your visibility start to look like the version of you you’ve been trying to become.

Where do you feel the biggest “too much” right now — in your writing, your offers, or how you’re showing up publicly?

If this pattern feels familiar, keep going here:

<a on.

That gap explains far more than most people realize.

It shows up in money, visibility, work, relationships, and the quiet sense that life is functioning, but not fully aligned.

Notice the mismatch

You often know exactly what is wrong.

You can name the pattern, trace the wound, and articulate the tension.

What you do not always do is sustain that truth long enough to reorganize your behavior around it.

You may be capable, insightful, and highly disciplined in the visible parts of life.

Internally, though, you may be split between identities: the competent one, the generous one, the ambitious one, the one who stays easy to be around, the one who never asks for too much.

That split creates drag.

What looks like procrastination is often something more exact: a mismatch between identity and action.

Name the truth

You are not uninformed.

You have done the reading.

Taken the courses.

Developed the language for your patterns.

You understand yourself well enough to describe what hurts.

What you may lack is not awareness, but a channel!

That is why insight alone can become a trap.

It creates clarity without movement, language without momentum, self-understanding without change.

This is also why success can coexist with stagnation.

Outwardly, things look functional.

Inwardly, there is constant negotiation: make money, remain likable, be visible, stay humble, stay ahead, do not disrupt the room, do not disappoint anyone.

That is not a strategy.

It is survival, refined.

The deeper pain is rarely “I do not know what to do.” It is “I know enough to sense that something is wrong, but not enough to identify the exact point of fracture.”

Is it the role?

The relationship?

The pace?

The brand?

The decision-making pattern?

The way you keep betraying your own timing in the name of coherence?

When self-awareness multiplies without a unifying framework, every signal begins to feel urgent.

That is where people become exhausted.

It is also why a strong framework feels like relief.

It reduces static.

It restores the sequence.

Decide on the move

You do not need more discipline rhetoric.

You need precision.

You need a way to separate signal from performance, and a method that converts inner truth into a decision you can stand behind.

What you are really after is not simply success. You want power without hardness, visibility without exposure, wealth without self-abandonment, influence without performance.

Most advice forces these desires into false choices.

Soft or ambitious. Intuitive or structured. Authentic or profitable.

The better message is more elegant: these are not contradictions. They are elements of a coherent system.

That is the promise of a cleaner framework.

It does not ask you to become someone else.

It asks you to become more exact about who you already are.

The process is straightforward: recognize the pattern, define the meaning, choose cleanly, and act immediately.

First: identify what repeats. What keeps getting delayed, diluted, or avoided?

Second: name what it means. Is this a confidence issue, a boundary issue, a visibility issue, a values mismatch, or a timing problem?

Third: choose without drama. One honest decision can do more than ten vague intentions.

You know this!

Take the action

A practical example: you keep starting projects and not finishing it.

On the surface, it may read as an inconsistency.

In reality, it may be a response pattern: building from pressure instead of desire, saying yes before clarity, trying to force identity before readiness.

The issue is not laziness.

The issue is misalignment.

And that is ok!

The cleaner move may be to narrow the offer, adjust the workflow, or wait for a clearer internal yes before committing.

The point is not to do more.

It is to act from a truer center.

Now translate that into action:

Write the pattern in one sentence…

Separate fact from fear…

Identify the real meaning…

Choose one action that reduces fragmentation…

Move before analysis multiplies….

That is what changes the system.

Not more insight.

Not more self-interrogation.

One clear move.

Review the result

The goal is not to become less sensitive or less ambitious.

The goal is to stop letting divided identities make decisions for you.

The more honest you become about the pattern, the less control it has.

And the moment honesty becomes action, you stop circling your life and start directing it.

That is the shift:

Not more insight, but more alignment.

Not more effort, but more direction.

Not more fragments, but one clear self at the center of the choice.

This is how the method works:

Notice the mismatch.

Name the truth.

Decide on the move.

Take the action.

Review the result.

Remind yourself again: the shift is not insight, but alignment.

Read the full framework - Join for weekly strategy - Subscribe for clarity and direction

Read next

If this pattern feels familiar, keep going here:

<div class="digest-post-embed" data-attrs="{"nodeId":"9cba4a33-42dd-4e43-884c-5902b5c4d0bd","caption":"“Money flows. Money comes to me easily. Money loves me.”

That sounds simple.

But for a lot of people, it is not.

I used to think my money problem was about money. It was not. It was about the story I had learned to tell myself about what I deserved, what I could hold, and what would happen if life got too good.

I know the pattern well: wanting more, then feeling guilty for wanting more. Having something good, then immediately looking for what might go wrong. Receiving ease, then feeling tense instead of comfortable.

That is not a money issue alone.

It is a decision-making issue, a boundary issue, and an identity issue.

One of the clearest examples for me happened in Mykonos, sitting by a pool at a five-star hotel.

On paper, everything looked perfect.

But I did not feel present.

I felt self-conscious.

I felt like I was waiting to be exposed for not belonging there. Instead of being in the moment, I was auditing my right to be there.

That was the mismatch.

The problem was not the hotel, or the money, or the setting.

The problem was the internal rule I was operating under: if something feels too good, I should not trust it.

That rule did not appear out of nowhere. Money was unstable when I was growing up. There were periods of enough, periods of not enough, and periods where everything looked fine from the outside but felt uncertain underneath. I learned early that money could change quickly. I also learned that wanting more could create tension. So even when life expanded, part of me was still waiting for it to collapse.

That is where the work starts.

<a class="image-link image2"
