Hay un instante que no figura en los calendarios, pero que marca el verdadero nacimiento del ser humano. No es el alboroto del parto ni la primera palabra balbuceada. Es un silencio abrupto, una pausa en la corriente incesante del monólogo interior. Es el día en que, por primera vez, te percatas de que no eres la voz que narra tu vida, sino el espacio vacío donde esa voz resuena. Ese día, el mundo se parte en dos mitades que siempre habían estado ahí, superpuestas como transparentes, el hablante y el oyente, el actor y el testigo. Y al descubrir esa fisura primordial, ya no puedes volver atrás. Lo que sucede después es una aventura tan sutil como total, una geografía interior que se repliega sobre sí misma y que, sin embargo, abarca todos los paisajes del alma.

Antes de ese día, eras tu voz. Cada pensamiento era una orden, cada emoción una identidad. La ira te poseía, el miedo te encogía, la alegría te elevaba. Creías ser el río de la conciencia, con sus rápidos y sus remansos. Pero en el momento del despertar, te conviertes en la orilla. Ves el río pasar, pero no te mojas. Oyes el parlamento interno, pero ya no firmas sus decretos. Ese "tú" que observa no es un sujeto más entre objetos; es el espacio mismo que permite que los objetos aparezcan. Es el gobernante interior del que hablaban los Estoicos, el emperador que no gobierna con leyes, sino con la mirada serena sobre el tumulto de las provincias del alma. Es el testigo de los herméticos, que sabe que el universo visible es un pergamino donde se escribe la obra del pensamiento divino, y que el observador es el único capaz de leer esa escritura sin confundirla con el ruido de la tinta.

Ese testigo no juzga, no clasifica, no se apega. Simplemente atestigua. Es el "que mira" de los indios, el drashta que permanece inmaculado tras el velo de maya. Y su primer acto de gobierno es la constatación de una dualidad radical... en ti hay dos, y siempre los ha habido. Uno es el que habla, el que teje historias, el que se lamenta o se jacta. El otro es el que escucha, el que no necesita hablar porque ya lo comprende todo sin palabras. El que habla es tiempo, es biografía, es el eco de condicionamientos milenarios. El que escucha es eternidad, es presencia pura, es el instante que no se pliega al pasado ni al futuro.

¿Qué sucede después de ese día? En principio, un extraño vértigo. El monarca que creías ser, ese yo autobiográfico, con su nombre y su historia, es destronado sin violencia. Simplemente, ya no te identificas con él. Ves sus ansiedades como se ven las nubes... pasajeras, sin sustancia. Ves sus triunfos y sus fracasos como se ven las olas en el mar... movimientos superficiales de una profundidad que nunca se agita. Pero este destronamiento no es nihilismo; es, por el contrario, una liberación inaudita. Porque al no ser la voz, dejas de defenderla. Al no ser el pensamiento, dejas de perseguirlo. Al no ser la emoción, dejas de huir de ella. Y entonces, por primera vez, puedes escuchar realmente.

Esa escucha no es pasiva. Es una atención sin esfuerzo, un wu wei del oído interior. Es la acción no-acción que permite que las cosas sean lo que son sin que el yo las distorsione con sus filtros. Es el silencio alquímico donde la plomo del ego se transmuta en el oro de la percepción directa. El sufí, en su danza, gira para alcanzar ese centro inmóvil; el budista, en su vipassana, observa la aparición y desaparición de los fenómenos sin apegarse a ellos. Todos señalan lo mismo... que el testigo no es un espectador indiferente, sino el horno donde se funden las escorias de la identidad.

Pero he aquí el giro más sutil, ese testigo que descubres, ese gobernante interior, tampoco es un yo definitivo. Es una función, no una entidad. Si lo miras con atención, verás que también él se desvanece cuando intentas atraparlo. Es la luz que ilumina la habitación, pero no un objeto dentro de la habitación. Los Upanishad lo llaman Atman, pero advierten que Atman es, en última instancia, Brahman, la totalidad sin atributos. Los gnósticos primitivos susurraban que el verdadero conocedor es aquel que conoce que no conoce. Y Gurdjieff, con su cuarto camino, hablaba del "yo real" como un cristal que solo se forma tras la fricción consciente entre el observador y lo observado.

Así, después de ese día, comienza una danza de espejos. Observas que el que observa es, a su vez, observado por una presencia más profunda. Y esa presencia, a su vez, se disuelve en otra. Hasta que el que habla y el que escucha se reconcilian en un abrazo que no es dualidad ni unidad, sino la simple respiración del ser. Ya no hay dos, pero tampoco hay uno. Hay un flujo sin centro, un río que es orilla y agua a la vez.

Este descubrimiento no te arranca del mundo; te devuelve a él con una nitidez insospechada. La taza de té tiene un sabor que nunca habías probado, porque antes lo saboreaba tu voz, no tu lengua. El rostro del otro lo ves sin los anteojos de tus proyecciones. El dolor sigue doliendo, pero ya no hay un "yo" que sufra; hay solo sensación, pura e incontaminada. Y esa sensación, paradójicamente, se vuelve más vívida, más real. Como dice el estoico: el gobernante interior no suprime las pasiones, las preside; las convierte en materiales para la virtud, que es armonía con la naturaleza.

Las relaciones cambian. Ya no buscas en el otro un espejo que refleje tu identidad, sino un compañero en el misterio. El amor se vuelve menos posesivo y más celebratorio. La muerte, esa sombra que el hablante teme, se transforma en una compañera de viaje, en el horizonte que da forma al paisaje. Porque si no eres la voz, si no eres el pensamiento ni la emoción, ¿qué es lo que muere? Solo el disfraz. El testigo, ese que escucha, ya estaba presente antes de tu nacimiento y seguirá después de tu muerte, como el espacio que contiene las nubes.

Y aquí llegamos al umbral más alto. Después de ese día, tras años de practicar la observación, llega un instante en que el testigo mismo se desvanece. No porque se oscurezca, sino porque se vuelve tan evidente que deja de ser un "algo" para ser el "todo". Ya no hay un adentro y un afuera, un que mira y un que es mirado. Hay solo la mirada, pura y simple. Advaita Vedanta llama a esto nirvikalpa samadhi; el budismo, sunyata; el alquimista, la nigredo que precede a la piedra filosofal. No es un estado excepcional, sino la textura misma de lo real cuando se despoja de todos los nombres.

Entonces, lo que sucede después de ese día es que dejas de preguntar qué sucede. El río de la vida sigue fluyendo, pero ya no necesitas orillas para saber que eres agua. El que habla y el que escucha se funden en un silencio que no es ausencia de sonido, sino la música de fondo del universo. Y esa música no tiene compositor, ni intérprete, ni oyente. Es simplemente la danza de la existencia, en la que cada átomo y cada galaxia son notas de una misma partitura sin principio ni fin.

El día que descubres que no eres tu voz, el mundo se vuelve transparente. Ya no vives en el tiempo, sino que el tiempo vive en ti. Ya no eres el actor, sino el teatro; ya no eres el sueño, sino el soñador que despierta dentro del sueño. Y ese despertar no es un logro, sino un reconocimiento, siempre has sido el testigo, el gobernante, el que mira. Solo que la voz, con su parloteo incesante, te había hecho creer que eras ella. Pero ahora lo sabes. Y ese saber no es intelectual, es un sabor en la lengua del alma, una calma que no depende de las circunstancias, una luz que no necesita fuente porque ella misma es la fuente.

Después de ese día, cada instante es una iniciación. Cada respiración, un mantra. Cada encuentro, un espejo. Y al final, cuando la muerte cierre el telón, el testigo sabrá que el telón no cierra nada, porque el teatro es infinito y la obra nunca termina. Solo cambia de escenario. Y en ese cambio, sin dejar de ser tú, descubrirás que eres todo lo que has observado, todo lo que has escuchado, todo lo que has amado. Porque el que mira y el que es mirado son, desde siempre... la misma luz.

Welcome back to Fun Facts in Spanish!

For this fifth edition, I wanted to do something a little different. No vocabulary list. No grammar lesson. No “memorize these 10 words.”

Instead, let’s talk about some little things about Spanish and Spanish-speaking cultures that you might not expect. 👀

Because sometimes the most interesting part of learning a language is discovering what happens between the words.

🇨🇴 1. In Colombia, “¿Quiubo?” can be a greeting

If you ever visit Colombia, you might hear:

“¿Quiubo?”

And no, it’s not a strange new Spanish verb you forgot to study. 😂

It’s a very informal greeting commonly understood as a shortened form of:

“¿Qué hubo?”

Depending on the situation, it can be similar to:

“What’s up?”
“How are you?”
“Hey!”

❤️ 2. Sometimes Spanish expresses emotion without saying “I love you”

Spanish has many ways to show affection.

You can say:

mi amor
cariño
mi vida
corazón
querido / querida

And here’s something interesting:

These expressions aren’t always romantic.

Depending on the person, relationship, country, and tone, they can be used between family members, friends, couples, or even in everyday interactions.

That’s why learning Spanish isn’t simply:

Word = translation

It’s more like:

Word + context + culture + tone = meaning

And THAT is where things get interesting. ✨

🌎 The real fun fact about Spanish…

Spanish isn’t one single experience.

Spanish in Colombia can sound different from Spanish in Mexico.

Spanish in Argentina can sound different from Spanish in Spain.

People have different expressions, accents, rhythms, slang, humor, and ways of showing affection.

And that’s one of the reasons I love teaching it.

You don’t just learn a language.

You discover people.

Cuando vivimos durante mucho tiempo en alerta, preocupados, enojados, asustados o sosteniendo emociones que no sabemos cómo expresar, nuestro sistema nervioso puede permanecer activado más tiempo del necesario.

Y el cuerpo termina cargando parte de aquello que emocionalmente no hemos podido procesar.

No significa que toda enfermedad tenga un origen emocional. Tampoco que expresar una emoción sea suficiente para resolver un problema físico. Significa reconocer algo más profundo: somos un todo.

Por eso sanar no consiste únicamente en pensar diferente. También implica aprender a escuchar el cuerpo, reconocer nuestras necesidades, poner límites, hablar de lo que sentimos, permitirnos llorar, descansar cuando necesitamos descanso y dejar de exigirnos estar bien todo el tiempo.

Una emoción reprimida no desaparece simplemente porque decidimos ignorarla. Puede quedarse esperando ser mirada, comprendida y atravesada.

Tu cuerpo no está en tu contra.

Está intentando decirte algo que llevas demasiado tiempo sin escuchar.

Literally, it translates to "Kiss me a lot." But let’s be honest: in English, "kiss me a lot" sounds almost like a request on a checklist. In Spanish, however, it feels like poetry.

The Grammar of Romance

To truly understand why this phrase melts hearts, we have to look at how it’s built:

• Bésame (Kiss me): This combines the command form of the verb besar (to kiss) with the pronoun me (me). In Spanish, attaching the object pronoun directly to the end of an imperative verb creates a seamless, intimate connection.

• Mucho (Much / A lot): While "much" describes quantity, in romantic contexts, it expresses depth, passion, and intensity.

When put together, bésame mucho doesn't mean "give me 50 kisses." It means kiss me deeply, kiss me passionately, kiss me as if time is running out.

The Cultural Soul Behind the Song

You can’t talk about this phrase without mentioning the iconic 1940 song Bésame Mucho, written by Mexican songwriter Consuelo Velázquez. Legend has it she wrote this timeless bolero before she had ever been kissed herself.

The most famous line of the song reveals the true emotion behind the words:

"Bésame, bésame mucho, como si fuera esta noche la última vez."

(Kiss me, kiss me deeply, as if tonight were the last time.)

This captures the core essence of Spanish romance: living and loving passionately in the present moment.

How to Use It in Real Life

While it’s a staple in romantic lyrics, it’s also a sweet, affectionate phrase you can use with someone special:

• When saying goodbye: "Dame un abrazo y bésame mucho." (Give me a hug and kiss me tenderly.)

• In a romantic message: "Te extraño, bésame mucho cuando llegues." (I miss you, kiss me deeply when you get here.)

Learning Spanish isn't just about memorizing vocabulary; it’s about feeling the emotion behind every word. Next time you hear or say bésame mucho, forget the literal translation and let the romance of the language take over.

El Principito (The Little Prince) by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is one of those books.

At first, it looks like a simple story about a little boy who travels from planet to planet. But underneath that simple story are questions about friendship, love, loneliness, growing up, and what really matters in life.

And if you’re learning Spanish, El Principito is also a beautiful way to discover vocabulary through a story instead of a dictionary.

So today, let’s travel to the little prince’s world. 🌎✨

🌹 First… What is

El Principito

about?

The story follows el Principito, a young prince who lives on a tiny asteroid and decides to travel through the universe.

During his journey, he meets unusual characters: a king, a businessman, a lamplighter, a geographer, and eventually a zorro — a fox — on Earth.

Each encounter teaches him something.

But perhaps the most important lessons are about love and friendship.

His relationship with la rosa (the rose) is especially important. The rose isn’t simply a flower. It represents something he loves and feels responsible for.

And then there is the fox, who teaches him that relationships become meaningful when we dedicate tiempo and care to them.

That is one of the reasons this little book has stayed in readers’ hearts for generations. ❤️

🦊 One of my favorite ideas from the book

One of the most memorable lessons comes from the fox.

He explains the idea of becoming connected to someone — creating a relationship that makes that person special to you.

The Spanish word “domesticar” appears in this context.

Literally, it can mean “to tame.”

But in the world of El Principito, it carries a much deeper idea: to create a bond, to become important to one another.

And suddenly, you’re not just learning vocabulary.

You’re learning how Spanish can express an idea.

This is exactly why I love learning languages.

A word can have a translation.

But sometimes, a word has a story behind it.

El Principito reminds us that language isn’t only about knowing whether rosa means “rose” or zorro means “fox.”

It’s about understanding the emotions, relationships, culture, and ideas that live behind the words.

And maybe that’s the best reason to learn Spanish:

Not just to understand what someone says…
but to understand what they mean. ✨

What exactly is chévere? 🤔

Well, that’s the fun part.

There isn’t one perfect English translation.

Depending on the situation, chévere can mean cool, great, nice, awesome, lovely, or simply something you like.

And in Colombia, you’ll hear it a lot. 🇨🇴

☕ So… what does “chévere” mean?

Imagine your friend tells you:

“Me compré un carro nuevo.”
I bought a new car.

You could answer:

“¡Qué chévere!” 😍

Here, it means:

“That’s awesome!”

Someone invites you to a beautiful place:

“Vamos a conocer este restaurante nuevo.”

You might say:

“¡Chévere!”

Basically:

“Sounds great!”

🇨🇴 But Colombians use it for more than things

You can describe a person as chévere too.

“Laura es muy chévere.”

This doesn’t necessarily mean Laura is cool in the teenage sense.

It can mean:

Laura is nice.
Laura is pleasant.
Laura is easy to talk to.
Laura is a great person to be around.

It’s one of those words that carries a feeling, not just a dictionary definition.

Colombians can make chévere work in many situations.

¿Cómo estuvo el viaje?
— ¡Chévere!

¿Te gustó la película?
— Sí, estuvo chévere.

¿Quieres ir por un café?
— ¡Chévere!

¿Cómo es tu nuevo jefe?
— Es chévere.

One word.

So many possibilities.

This is exactly why I love teaching Spanish.

Sometimes, learning a language isn’t about memorizing another 20 vocabulary words.

It’s about understanding how people actually talk.

Because if you only learn:

chévere = cool

you’ve learned the translation.

But when you understand how a Colombian uses chévere, you’re learning a little piece of Colombian culture.

And that’s where Spanish goes beyond words. ✨

For me, coffee has become one of them.

Hot coffee doesn’t always make me feel good. Sometimes, after drinking it, I feel anxious, overstimulated, and I can feel that uncomfortable burning sensation in my stomach.

So, naturally, I started wondering:

Is it the coffee… or is it the way I drink it?

Then something unexpected happened.

I ordered an iced vanilla latte.

And surprisingly, I felt completely fine.

No uncomfortable feeling. No sensation that my body was saying “please stop.”

And now I’m genuinely curious:

Was it because it was cold?
Was it the milk?
Was it the amount of coffee?
Was it because I drank it differently?

Or maybe my body simply has a very specific opinion about coffee. 😂

I’m not trying to give medical advice here. I’m just sharing something I’ve noticed about myself and wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.

Let me tell you something as a Spanish teacher:

If you are learning Spanish and you have ever said something that made a native speaker look at you for a second and then smile…

Don’t panic.

I’ve been there with my students many times.

And honestly? Some of the funniest moments in language learning happen because we make mistakes.

After years of teaching languages, I’ve learned that beginners don’t usually struggle because they aren’t smart enough.

They struggle because Spanish doesn’t always work the way English does.

So today, I want to share five mistakes I see again and again—and show you how to sound a little more natural.

Let’s learn from them together.

1. “I have 20 years.”

This is one of the first mistakes English speakers make.

❌ I have 20 years.

It makes sense if you’re translating directly from English:

“I have 20 years.”

But Spanish doesn’t express age that way.

In Spanish, we use tener — to have.

✅ Tengo 20 años.
I am 20 years old.

Literally, Spanish says:

“I have 20 years.”

And here’s something interesting: Spanish also uses tener for many things that English expresses differently.

Tengo hambre. → I’m hungry.
Tengo sueño. → I’m sleepy.
Tengo frío. → I’m cold.
Tengo miedo. → I’m afraid.

So when learning Spanish, don’t always translate word by word.

Learn the expression as a whole.

2. “Estoy embarazada” when you mean “I’m embarrassed.”

This one deserves a warning sign. 😂

❌ Estoy embarazada.

If you mean:

“I’m embarrassed.”

Please don’t use this sentence.

Embarazada means:

🤰 pregnant

The word you’re looking for is:

✅ Estoy avergonzada.
I’m embarrassed.

Or in everyday conversation:

Me da vergüenza.
I’m embarrassed / I feel embarrassed.

One tiny mistake can completely change the meaning.

And that’s one of the reasons I love teaching Spanish.

Words have stories, personalities, and sometimes surprises.

3. Saying “actualmente” means “actually”

This one is a classic false friend.

❌ Actualmente does NOT mean actually.

Actualmente = currently / nowadays

Actualmente vivo en Colombia.
I currently live in Colombia.

If you want to say actually, you can use:

✅ En realidad
✅ De hecho

For example:

En realidad, no me gusta el café.
Actually, I don’t like coffee.

These little words can be confusing because they look so similar.

But don’t worry.

False friends are part of the journey.

4. Saying “Estoy caliente” when you mean “I’m hot.”

Okay… let’s talk about this one.

😅

If you are learning Spanish, you might think:

I’m hot → Estoy caliente.

But be careful.

Estoy caliente can have a sexual meaning, depending on the context.

If you’re simply saying that the weather is making you feel hot, a more natural expression is:

✅ Tengo calor.
I’m hot.

Notice the pattern again:

Tengo calor.
Tengo frío.

Spanish uses tener here, not estar.

So remember:

🌡️ Tengo calor. → I’m hot.
❄️ Tengo frío. → I’m cold.

This is one of those things you probably won’t remember from a grammar chart.

You’ll remember it because someone warned you.

5. Translating everything literally

This might actually be the biggest mistake of all.

When you’re learning a new language, your brain naturally tries to build sentences using the language you already know.

That’s normal.

But Spanish has its own logic.

For example:

🇺🇸 I’m hungry.
🇪🇸 Tengo hambre.

🇺🇸 I’m 30 years old.
🇪🇸 Tengo 30 años.

🇺🇸 I’m cold.
🇪🇸 Tengo frío.

If you translate every word individually, Spanish can feel strange.

But if you learn chunks and expressions, everything starts to make more sense.

That’s when you stop translating in your head…

…and start thinking in Spanish.

The truth about making mistakes

After teaching Spanish and languages for years, there’s something I want every language learner to remember:

Making mistakes doesn’t mean you’re bad at Spanish.

It means you’re using it.

The student who never makes a mistake is probably not speaking enough.

So say the sentence.

Get it wrong.

Laugh about it.

Let someone correct you.

Try again.

And keep going.

Because fluency doesn’t happen when you stop making mistakes.

It happens when you’re no longer afraid of making them.

Another year of lesson plans, early mornings, busy classrooms, unexpected questions, challenging days, laughter, hugs, and those little moments that somehow make everything worth it.

And as I begin this new chapter, I’ve been thinking about something:

After six years of teaching, what have I actually learned?

The answer is much bigger than I expected.

Teaching is not just about teaching.

I’m a bilingual teacher, a Modern Languages professional from EAN University in Colombia, and I have a Diploma in Education, international ELE training Spanish as a Foreign Language, and a certification in Yoga for Children.

I teach languages.

I teach yoga.

I work with Character & Personal Growth (CPG).

I plan lessons, assess students, communicate with families, and try to create a classroom where children feel safe enough to learn and be themselves.

But none of my qualifications fully prepared me for the human part of teaching.

They didn’t prepare me for the child who walks into your classroom carrying something you cannot see.

They didn’t prepare me for the student who needs a completely different approach from everyone else.

They didn’t prepare me for navigating different diagnoses, different personalities, different learning needs, and different ways of communicating.

And they definitely didn’t prepare me for the conversations with parents.

Some conversations are easy.

Others are not.

Sometimes you have to explain something that is difficult to hear. Sometimes you have to listen. Sometimes you have to find a solution together.

And sometimes, you simply have to remember that everyone in the room wants the best for the child—even when they see the situation differently.

Some days are really hard.

I wish people talked about this more.

Teaching can be beautiful, but it can also be exhausting.

There are days when you give everything you have and still wonder if you did enough.

Days when your lesson doesn’t go as planned.

Days when one situation follows you home.

Days when you question your decisions.

Days when you think:

“Maybe I could have handled that differently.”

And then you come back the next morning and try again.

Because that’s part of being a teacher.

You don’t have to be perfect.

You just have to keep showing up.

And then… there are the moments you never forget.

A student runs toward you and gives you a hug.

Someone says, “Teacher, I missed you.”

A child who once struggled suddenly raises their hand.

A student remembers something you taught months ago.

Someone looks at you with that little smile that says, “I feel safe here.”

Those moments don’t appear on a report card.

They don’t show up in your résumé.

But they stay with you.

Those are the moments that remind me why I chose this profession.

I teach children, but children have taught me too.

They have taught me that progress doesn’t always look the way we expect.

That some children need more time.

That some need more encouragement.

That sometimes a five-minute conversation is more important than finishing the lesson.

That listening can be just as powerful as speaking.

And that a classroom is not simply a place where children learn from a teacher.

It is a place where everyone learns from everyone.

Six years later, I am not the same teacher.

And I’m grateful for that.

I’ve made mistakes.

I’ve had incredible days.

I’ve had difficult days.

I’ve learned new strategies.

I’ve changed the way I communicate.

I’ve become more patient.

I’ve learned to listen more carefully.

I’ve learned that every student doesn’t need the same thing from me.

And perhaps most importantly, I’ve learned that being a good teacher doesn’t mean having all the answers.

Sometimes it means being willing to say:

“Let’s figure this out together.”

So, here I go again.

A new school year.

New students.

New challenges.

New stories waiting to happen.

I don’t know exactly what this year will bring.

But I know I’ll walk into my classroom with everything these six years have taught me—and with enough humility to keep learning.

Because maybe that’s the real privilege of being a teacher:

You get to watch children grow while you are still growing yourself.

Here’s to another year.

To the hard days.

To the hilarious ones.

To the unexpected hugs.

To the lessons that don’t go according to plan.

To the children who will leave a little piece of themselves in my heart.

And to another year of becoming the teacher—and the person—I want to be.

Rafael Pombo (1833–1912) was a Colombian poet, writer and translator, especially remembered for his literature for children.

For many Colombians, his poems are part of childhood. Characters such as La pobre viejecita, El renacuajo paseador, Mirringa Mirronga and Simón el Bobito have been passed from generation to generation. The Colombian Ministry of Culture includes these works among his best-known children’s classics.

But Pombo was more than a children’s writer. His work was full of humor, rhythm, imagination and irony, which is part of what makes his writing so memorable.

Érase una viejecita
sin nadita que comer
sino carnes, frutas, dulces,
tortas, huevos, pan y pez.

Bebía caldo, chocolate,

The Poor Little Old Lady

Once there was a little old lady

with absolutely nothing to eat—

yet the poor woman could never find

anything to eat or drink.

And this old woman had no home,

not even a little hut to live in,

except for a great big house

with her own garden and orchard.

No one, no one took care of her,

except Andrés, Juan, and Gil,

eight maids and two pages,

all dressed in fine uniforms.

She never had a place to sit

except chairs and sofas,

with little stools and cushions

The moral of The Poor Little Old Lady is that having many things does not necessarily mean feeling satisfied or happy. The old woman had food, a huge house, servants, and every comfort, yet she always saw herself as poor. The poem reminds us to appreciate what we have and not let dissatisfaction keep us from enjoying life.

Here are four words I think every Spanish learner should know. ✨

🌿 1. Madrugar

Madrugar means to wake up very early, usually earlier than you would like.

Mañana tengo que madrugar.
Tomorrow I have to get up very early.

In English, we normally need several words to express the idea. In Spanish, we have one verb for it.

And yes… Spanish speakers have a word for that 5 a.m. feeling. 😴

☀️ 2. Estrenar

This is one of my favorite Spanish verbs.

Estrenar means to use, wear, or experience something for the first time.

Hoy voy a estrenar mi vestido.
Today I’m wearing my new dress for the first time.

You can estrenar clothes, shoes, a car, a house—and even something you’ve created.

Hoy estrené mi nuevo proyecto.
Today I launched/used my new project for the first time.

One word, but a very specific moment: the first time.

💭 3. Antojo

Have you ever suddenly wanted chocolate?

Or pizza?

Or maybe that Colombian arepa you haven’t had in months?

That’s an antojo.

Antojo = a sudden craving or strong desire for something.

Tengo antojo de chocolate.
I’m craving chocolate.

And sometimes an antojo isn’t about food at all.

Tengo antojo de viajar.
I have a sudden desire to travel.

It’s that little feeling of “I really want this right now.”

🤗 4. Apapachar

This is such a beautiful word.

Apapachar means to show affection through tenderness, affection, a hug, or a loving gesture.

Necesito que me apapachen.
I need someone to comfort me / give me some love.

The beautiful thing about apapachar is that it isn’t simply “to hug.”

It carries the idea of comforting someone and making them feel loved and cared for. ❤️

✨ Spanish Beyond Words

Maybe that’s what makes learning Spanish so beautiful.

Sometimes you aren’t just learning a new word.

You’re learning a feeling, a habit, a cultural idea, or a tiny piece of how another language sees the world.

And that’s why I believe Spanish goes beyond words.

I’m okay.

But I have to admit, I was very worried about my mom.

I was at work when the earthquake happened, and she wasn’t with me. As soon as I could, I called her to make sure she was okay.

I felt a lot of dizziness. My body was shaking along with the ground, and for a moment, it was difficult to understand what was happening.

Even now, I still have a little bit of a headache.

Today reminded me how quickly everything can change.

One moment, you’re at work, going through your normal day… and the next, you’re standing still, feeling the ground move beneath your feet and wondering if the people you love are safe.

My mom was the first person I thought about.

And I know many people in Colombia had that same feeling today: Are my parents okay? Is my family safe? What about my friends?

That is why, before talking about numbers, cities, or buildings, I wanted to share my own experience.

I am okay. My mom is okay. And I am grateful. ❤️

Today, Colombia shook.

On August 10, 2026, a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia. The epicenter was in San José del Palmar, Chocó, but the earthquake was felt across a much wider area.

Several cities have been affected, buildings have collapsed, and emergency teams are working to rescue and help those affected. The situation is still developing, so information may change as authorities continue assessing the damage.

Sadly, this earthquake has already taken lives. At least 150 people have died and many others have been injured. Rescue teams and local communities are working tirelessly to search through collapsed buildings, where people may still be trapped beneath the rubble. The situation is still developing, and every minute matters as rescuers continue their efforts to find and help those who are missing.

I want to talk about language, empathy, and what we say when someone asks: “Are you okay?”

Words we use when the earth shakes:

• Earthquake — terremoto / sismo

• Aftershock — réplica

• Damage — daños

• Collapsed building — edificio colapsado

• Rescue — rescate

• Emergency — emergencia

• Shelter — refugio

• Help — ayudar / ayuda

• Stay safe — mantente a salvo

• Are you okay? — ¿Estás bien?

Sometimes, four simple words are enough to show someone that you care.

Colombia is more than a country on a map. It is people, families, cities, mountains, coffee regions, stories and communities.

When the ground shakes, we are reminded of how connected we really are.

And I thought: Why not use this day to learn some Spanish?

We often learn Spanish through food, travel, music, and everyday conversations. But language is also about something deeply human: our bodies, emotions, relationships, boundaries, and pleasure.

So today, let’s talk about a topic that isn’t always easy to discuss—and learn some Spanish along the way.

🌸 First, what is an orgasm?

An orgasm is the peak of sexual arousal and is generally experienced as intense physical pleasure. During orgasm, the body goes through several physiological changes, including rhythmic muscle contractions and the release of chemicals such as dopamine and oxytocin.

And here’s something important:

Everyone experiences pleasure differently.

There isn’t one “right” way to experience it, and not everyone experiences an orgasm. That’s completely okay.

Meaning: Pleasure

El placer también puede estar en las cosas pequeñas.

Pleasure can also be found in the little things.

Meaning: Desire

Meaning: Intimacy

Intimacy isn’t only physical. It can also mean emotional closeness, trust, and vulnerability.

Meaning: Affection

This is one of those beautiful Spanish words that can express warmth, affection, and love.

Me gusta demostrar cariño a las personas que quiero.

I like showing affection to the people I love.

Consentimiento 🇪🇸

Meaning: Consent

This is perhaps the most important word on today’s list.

El consentimiento es fundamental en cualquier relación.

Consent is essential in any relationship.

Talking about pleasure also means talking about respect, communication, boundaries, and mutual consent.

Orgasmo 🇪🇸

Meaning: Orgasm

And finally, the word that inspired today’s article.

Orgasmo refers to the physical climax of sexual pleasure.

Simple vocabulary—but an important reminder that Spanish gives us words to talk about every part of the human experience.

🌿 Are there any benefits?

Research suggests that orgasm can be associated with relaxation, stress reduction, improved sleep, mood benefits, and temporary relief from some types of pain. During orgasm, the body releases substances including oxytocin, dopamine and endorphins.

But let’s not turn pleasure into another thing we feel pressured to “achieve.”

There is no health requirement to have an orgasm, and everyone’s sexual experience is different.

The important things are feeling comfortable with your body, communicating openly, respecting boundaries, and making choices that are right for you.

And if someone experiences repeated or intense pain during orgasm, that’s something worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

💭 What can language teach us about pleasure?

Maybe more than we think.

Learning a language isn’t just about memorizing vocabulary.

It’s about learning how to express:

what we feel,
what we want,
what we don’t want,
what makes us comfortable,
and where our boundaries are.

Sometimes, having the right word gives us the confidence to have an important conversation.

And that’s one of the things I love most about language.

Words give us a voice.

As a teacher, I spend my days surrounded by people.

Not just students, but colleagues.

Many colleagues.

In my workplace, there are more than 70 of us. That means sharing hallways, meetings, conversations, celebrations, disagreements, and everyday moments from Monday to Friday.

And honestly…

Sometimes, it’s wonderful.

Sometimes, it’s exhausting.

Workplaces are made up of people, and wherever people come together, there will be different personalities, opinions, and emotions.

Not because teaching is different.

Why does social pressure at work affect me more than I’d like to admit?

Maybe it’s because, as humans, we all want to feel accepted.

We want to belong.

But I’ve realized something important.

I don’t need everyone to understand me.

I don’t need everyone to like me.

I just need to be respectful, kind, and true to who I am.

That is enough.

Some days, I leave work feeling inspired.
