Cursed Daughters actually opened me to a reading spree and I just finished my 10th book of the yearrr (The goal is 50💃)

Let’s get into the review👇

Cursed daughters is a book about the Falodun family curse beginning with the matriarch; Feranmi Falodun. This curse has prevented generations of Falodun women from staying in their matrimonial home after marriage and has continued to be a strong hold over the family. I think Cursed Daughters is a mix of speculative and contemporary fiction as we see the curse coming to pass over and over again in the Falodun women. It also got me thinking a lot about reincarnation and possibility of it being real.

The start of the book introduces readers to Ebun; a Falodun whose mother was affected by the curse and so she grew up without her Dad. We’re also introduced to Monife; another Falodun whose mother was also affected by the curse. Though she grew up with her dad, her parents got separated eventually.

Ebun and Monife were cousins (their mothers were sisters) who lived together after Monife’s mom relocated back to Nigeria after her failed marriage. Ebun was the guarded Falodun who seemed not to care about the curse at all while Monife was the carefree one who worried about the curse.

As the book progresses, we see Monife falling in love with someone she was willing to fight the curse for- Golden boy. I liked that through Monife’s character, we get to see what masked depression looks like. Everyone in her immediate family had an outlet for their father’s desertion. Her mother buried herself in African spirituality and traditional herbs, her brother was always calling their dad whereas her only outlet was her relationship with Golden boy which was unhealthy.

He made her forget her father’s shunning and she made him the centre of her universe. I like to think that this dynamic points to the importance of healthy ways to get over pain. It’s healthier for someone to help you get over tough moments by being there for you when you need someone to talk to and to reassure you that this tough period would not last forever. Using a person as a distraction from dealing with hurt doesn't help healing. In Monife’s world, the sun rises and sets with Golden boy.

Ebun on the other hand was a stubborn character who frustrated me a lottt😭😭 How she hid the identity of Eniiyi’s father till the end of the book annoyed me so much. I’d have love to read how the relationship between Ebun and Eniiyi’s father deepened so much that Ebun was willing to bear his child (or maybe she didn’t think she was going to get pregnant😅).

Reading the part that showed the main reason for Monife’s death got me emotional and I was really mad at Ebun but I read a post by Ameenat Adebadejo that said Ebun was an example of a parentified daughter who had to quickly mature, take charge of her life and free herself from the curse. This doesn’t justify her betrayal to Monife as she was the one person Monife considered to be her ally, but it gives explanation to some of the decisions she took in the book.

And in all fairness, Ebun also suffered as Eniiyi having an uncanny resemblance to Monife felt like the curse was laughing in Ebun’s face. Karma is what again???

I liked the family tree at the start of the book as it was a big tool in understanding the generations of Falodun women and their respective stories. I also liked that the book started with Monife’s funeral before telling us about her life (I’m a sucker for books that begin like this).

Oyinkan Braithwaite writing style in Cursed Daughters reminded me so much of Francesca Ekwuyasi’s writing style in Butter Honey Pig Bread; another book I really love and think you should read btw. If you agree with me or not on this point, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

By and large, Cursed Daughters is a great book and I think you should read it as soon as you can. Written in 1977, Petals of Blood is Ngugi Wa Thiong’o fourth novel set in recent post-independent Kenya. I’ve had this book for over a decade but never cared about reading it because for a long time, I had no idea how big of a writer Ngugi Wa Thiong’o was and now in retrospect, I wished I read it earlier. This is a book I think every Kenyan and by extension every African should read.

Petals of Blood is a powerful political novel that gives voice to the consequences of British colonization, the greediness of the early Kenyan political elites and the fight for freedom and justice through the lives of four prominent characters; Munira, a schoolteacher and headmaster who feels he has been a spectator all his life and has fallen short of the expectations his wealthy family had for him. I liked the upward trajectory of his character from being a mere observer in the events of his life to being an action player, Wanja, a complex barmaid who has been exploited since her adolescent years and has used the attraction men always had for her to her benefit, Abdulla, a crippled shopkeeper who was involved in the Mau Mau uprising and in search for a quiet life and Karega, a secondary school dropout who had always questioned social injustice.

The story opens with the arrest of these four characters as suspected culprits in the murder of three notable Kenyan political figures; Kimeria (a businessman), Chui (Munira’s classmate who later became the headmaster of their secondary school) and Mzigo (a Commissioner of Education).

About 80% of this book was set in Ilmorog, a fictional village in Kenya where the residents experienced famine due to the lack of rains in the farming season. After a few years of drought, the villagers decided to go to the city and speak with their Member of Parliament to enlighten him about their situation and seek his help.

Due to this visit, Ilmorog gathered a lot of media attention and the drought-stricken village became a centre for modern infrastructure brought about by the political elites who got murdered. And yes, they were murdered by one of the main characters (an absolutely surprising reveal btw😭😭

Through the characters’ lives, we see how villagers were cheated out of their lands, houses and businesses by their own people who had benefitted from British colonization. Some joined Christian missionaries using the message of salvation as a tool of deceit and brainwashing encouraging poor converts to slave away for their masters with little pay and terrible working conditions. These people would twist the law to enable them buy lands from lords and clans who needed money to pay dues to the new government (colonizers).

And others became politicians turning into the oppressors they claimed to have fought independence from (for instance Chui becoming a worse headmaster than Fraudsham). This agrees to the school of thought that says a lot of people who speak against corruption in political offices tend to become the very people they criticize when elected.

Petals of Blood is one of those stories that should be told. Stories that might not make it to history textbooks in classrooms (they don’t even teach history anymore in Nigerian schools), stories that do not make it to mainstream media or get watered down by those who had benefitted from the oppression of indigenous people by the British. Although, colonization brought with it Western education, technology and development, it is important to tell the full story.

Reading this book made me appreciate how great of a storyteller Ngugi Wa Thiong’o was. It was really nice to read about ordinary people taking up the courage to fight for a better life for their kinsmen and refusing accept corruption as the norm. This is also the first book I’ve read where my favourite character at the beginning of the book became my least favourite at the end (this shows the complexity of human life and validates the constant phenomenon called change) and another character who I did not care for at the start of the book became my ultimate favourite.

Through Abdulla character, I learnt about the Mau Mau uprising which was a militant Kenyan naturalist group composed primarily of fighters from Kikuyu, Embu and Meru ethnic groups. Their rebellion was countered by the British military and Kenyan militias who were loyal to and equipped by Britain. More than 20,000 Kenyans were said to have been killed.

Furthermore, Ilmorog’s Member of Parliament had a political group known as KCO which I believe Ngugi Wa Thiong’o used as a tool to discuss contemporary political groups. The KCO, though not explicitly explained in the book but from what I could gather, was a fraternity group that gathers peasants and elites alike with the promise of a better country but its main purpose was to serve the interests of the wealthy locals and foreign partners to create an economy where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Average citizens were coerced to join through an initiation rite sold to them as a Tea party.

I particularly liked that Wanja’s character showed female representation (though not in the best of ways) in the struggle and fight for freedom. I also enjoyed how Karega and Munira stories were intertwined showing us a glimpse into the early Kenyan elite secondary schools.

All in all, Petals of Blood is a great African story that uses fiction to share real life events. If you enjoy books like Half of a Yellow Sun and Pachinko, you should read this.

The first time I heard about Han Kang was when she won The Noble Prize for Literature in 2024. She is the first South Korean writer and the first Asian writer to win the prize. The Vegetarian was originally written in Korean and was translated to English in 2015 by Deborah Smith. It is an unconventional story and has been described as an unsettling work of art, which I agree with.

Before reading the book, I saw an Instagram reel which explained that the book was more than someone refusing to eat meat (same case with how The Fishermen was more than just about a couple of guys fishing). The book follows the story of Yeong-hye, a middle-aged Korean woman who wakes up one day and decided to be a Vegetarian. This was due to a couple of dreams she kept having where she sees herself eating raw animal flesh soaked in blood and as a result of this, she couldn’t bring herself to eat meat in the real world.

The Vegetarian is divided into three parts- The Vegetarian, Mongolian Mark and Flaming Trees. Each part discusses Yeong-hye’s decision to stop eating meat through the lens of her husband, brother-in-law and elder sister.

In the first part, Yeong-hye’s husband didn’t understand why his wife would make such a decision when she has eaten meat all her life. He thought it was just a phase that would eventually pass and we get to see the shallow love he has for his wife which fizzled out a few months after she turned vegetarian. There were couple of times, he wished he married her sister instead...

Mongolian Mark was the weirdest part for me. It follows Yeong-hye’s brother-in-law (her elder sister’s husband) obsession with her Mongolian mark and him wanting to paint flowers all over her. Rather than helping her, he used her to fulfill his fantasies which unfortunately landed her in a mental institution.

The last part, Flaming Trees was quite emotional. We’re drawn into the life of the seemingly steady In-hye, Yeong-hye elder sister. As any other elder sister, she grew up protective of Yeong-hye and didn’t understand why her sister would suddenly turn vegetarian. In her story, we see the struggles of motherhood, the burden of trying to be the perfect wife and daughter and the pain of seeing your husband take advantage of your mentally unstable sister. I liked the honesty that was shown in her character as she came close to having a mental breakdown while caring for her sister. Does this show the familial connection of psychiatric conditions👀

I think The Vegetarian also shows how a human life can be controlled by family as we see this where Yeong-hye decison was met with anger and she hardly had a say in the subsequent events that happened in her life. A review I read said Yeong-hye’s family were not interested in helping her but rather were angry that she became non-conforming. And I agree because instead of forcing her to keep eating meat, why not try and understand why she stopped in the first place? Maybe if they did, her condition wouldn’t have deteriorated like it did..

Towards the end of the book, I had a niggling fear that Yeong-hye was going to die but thank goodness, she didn’t though I’m not sure if I consider that sort of life as living. When I finished The Vegetarian, I was worried I might have failed to understand the message Han Kang wanted to pass but reading other reviews and writing mine has made me understand the book better.

Han Kang has said her novels explore human suffering and she has been described by The Conventional Magazine as one who writes with empathy for vulnerable lives.

If you’re yet to read The Vegetarian, I think you should as it is important to read stories that deviate from popular themes.

2. My next read is the African classic, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and I’m looking forward to having a great time reading. I read it for the first time in my early teens and I would like to read it again as an adult.

Imagine a random person telling your kids that one of them would kill another or someone ‘prophesying’ that one of your siblings would kill another…

I have a conspiracy theory that this book is not entirely fiction. Something tells me that some of the events that were written happened in real life. I’m still healing from everything I experienced while reading this book so maybe it’s my PTSD speaking😭

I’ve heard a lot about The Fishermen for a long time but I was never spurred to read it. Then around May last year, I came across a review by Melanin Terra on Instagram and I was intrigued by the whole ‘mad man prophesied that one of the brothers would kill another’ thing and decided to start reading. Halfway into the book, I was asking myself; Who sent me??? Because what in the world is this tragedy???

The Fishermen is a book about four brothers who decided to take up fishing as a way to make money without having any idea the amount of tragedy that would befall them as a result of this cause. It was set in the late 90s to early 2000s in Akure, South-Western Nigeria. It was lovely to see a map at the beginning of the book. Three gbosas for Chigozie Obioma🙌🏽

One of the things that struck me about this book was how vivid the characters and the events that took place felt to me. It was as if I was inside the book literally watching the characters live their lives. I feel like I would recognize Ikenna, Boja, Obembe, Ben and even Abulu if I see them.

The Fishermen is a book that shows what happens when parents are not totally present in their children lives. Though, I understand their father’s need to make a living which was what took him to another state faraway from Akure but you don’t leave your wife to cater for six kids without any help and assistance. From the day the madman made the ‘prophesy’, everything started going downhill and it was sad reading what the kids had to go through. The boys lacked a present parent (though I think their Mom tried her best) and this made them easy targets for a madman’s foolery.

The major lesson I learnt from reading this book is that parents should try harder to protect their kids. There’s so much wickedness in this world and there’s great need for you to be present in your children lives as much as possible. You should know who they talk to, what they do and where they go to.

I would like to ask Chigozie Obioma what inspired The Fishermen. The last book that gave me this inner turmoil was Her Daughter’s Dream by Francine Rivers. I haven’t recovered from reading The Fishermen and I don’t think I will in a long while.

All in all, The Fishermen is a spectacular book. Give it a read if you’re looking for something entirely different from the regular.

1. Happy New Year guysssss😂😂🤣🤣😭😭

   This sounds somehow but I mean this is my first post of the year and it’s mandatory to greet people where I come from. So Eku Odun Tuntun tawa yiii🥳🎉

   I hope you’re having a great 2026 so far wherever you are🥰

2. Earlier this year. I was appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of my department’s association (The Ilorin University Medical Students Association) and it’s been a wonderful experience so far. What I love most about my position is that my creative mind is constantly stimulated. It’s like working as a Content Strategist without being paid😅 (hire me if you need one btw). This is not to say that the position doesn’t have its cons but I’m working alongside committed individuals and I’m grateful for that.

3. I completed my four-week posting in Family Medicine and Dental Surgery and it was a great relief to learn something that’s not Path or Pharm. This is ironic because I’m starting my last posting in Pathology tomorrow😭😭 (it’s the last one so that counts for something). I like the concept to patient care in Family Medicine and it’s a specialty I admire. Dental Surgery was quite chaotic but I learnt a lot on oral hygiene and oral habits. It was also cool observing and understanding the process of fixing braces (quite pricey btw)

   

4. I’m currently reading The Vegetarian by Han Kang and I’m still understanding Young-Hye’s decision to stop eating meat and the dreams she keeps having about animals. I’m curious about how her story progresses and if her family finally comes to terms with her decision.

I finished reading Dream Count last week and it took me a while to finish because of schoolwork. Though, I know I’m late to the party because it seems the whole world has read Dream Count alreadyyy😂 but please indulge me, I just finished reading mine😪

Dream Count introduces us to the lives of four women: Chiamaka, Zikora, Kadiatou and Omelogor. It was set few months before and after the lockdown and it starts with Chiamaka’s story which made so much sense because she’s the one connecting all other three women together. Chiamaka is this soft-spoken, posh and gentle Nigerian girl who moves abroad after completing her secondary school in Nigeria. She’s a travel writer and I love how realistic her background correlated with her lifestyle because only a rich or wealthy Nigerian can afford to travel without sponsorship or brand deals, right???

Chiamaka’s dream is to be fully known and cherished by someone of the opposite sex and she feels her life isn’t complete till she gets that and this hopeless desire is seen her relationships with different men in the book. There were many times I’d be like Yeeee!!! Chiamaka oo🙆🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️

Towards the end of the book, Zikora describes Chiamaka as a milk-butter and this perfectly describes her meek nature. I loved Chia but she’s too eager to please people who don’t even matter.

Zikora on the other hand is more self-assured and I think she can be a bit mean and sanctimonious sometimes. If Zikora had Chia’s kind of money, she’d be a different person which is normal tbh. Zikora is this cool, intelligent lawyer babe whose family story I found the most emotional and as if that was not even enough, she had to face another sad incident which made her quite bitter and gave her a biting humour. I’m so glad she was able to repair her relationship with her Mom and they were back on good terms.

Now my favouriteeeee character; Kadiatou🥰

Kadiatou’s story was inspired by Nafissatou Diallo, a Guinean immigrant who was in the news May 2011 for accusing Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the Head of the International Monetary Fund at that time of sexual assault. Kadiatou is the typical African immigrant who comes to America and is grateful for the opportunities America affords them. I love that Chimamanda shed so much light on the intricacies of the African Immigrant experience which is not so popular with mainstream media.

While reading Omelogor’s story, I shook my head so many times in awe of her confidence. Omelogor is this big, bold and brash successful Nigerian woman who says whatever she wants to say and does whatever she wants to do without any fear of whose ox is being gored. I also really loved that Omelogor loves her Chia, it was really nice to see their bond despite their personalities being mirror opposites.

Now with these four women interacting, there’s bound to be misunderstanding and friction and Chimamanda did good justice to that through various conversations and dialogue we had in the book. For instance, there were a lot of rage-baiting between Omelogor and Zikora and it felt like they were simply tolerating each other because of Chia😭😭and it was quite amusing that Chia feels about Hauwa the same way Omelogor feels about Zikora which showed that many of us do not like to share our friends😅

I think the title is gotten from the conversation Zikora had with Chia where she told Chia that Chia spent the lockdown looking up her exes and reviewing her body count and Chia said they were her dream count instead (this further reiterate what I said was Chia’s dream earlier). There are so many excerpts in Dream Count I’d have loved to share but as at the time of writing this review, I do not have the book with me.

I totally enjoyed reading Dream Count and it’s my second favourite CNA book after Half of a Yellow Sun. What made me love Dream Count was how well the characters were written and if there’s one thing all my favourite books have in common, it’d be well-written characters.

I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews about Dream Count and while everyone is entitled to their opinion, we should also know that not all books would contain crazy plot twists and thrillers, some books would be about regular experiences of people which is totally fine.

It doesn’t help too that 400-level is a very jealous class in medical school and it seems like I’ve been in a stressful cycle since March; Resume a posting, start preparing for the posting exams, write the exam, resume another posting the following week, start prepping for the exam, write it, resume another posting, start preparing for the exams, write it and it goes on and on and on. There are 12 postings in this class and I’m on my 6th one meaning 6 more to go. Somebody helpppp😭😭

For my own sanity, I need a safe space outside the craziness of medical school and my Substack and Instagram page are the two things I’ve decided not to give up no matter how crazy it gets. If 400-level no wan gree for me, me sef go hold am for neck🙄🙄💀

During my first week of resumption, I remember a doctor advising me to hold on tight to my writing and I wish I took his advice more seriously. But anyways, we move. This is not a regret-ranting post😪😪

On the flip side of the coin, actively pursuing other interests can get scary because as an undergraduate, doing well in school still remains your primary responsibility but my God has given me the spirit of excellence to flourish in everything I do.

So, what has happened since my last blog post?

As much as I don’t like school, it’s great to be on the other side (clinicals>>>>preclinicals) and in the past few months, I’ve had my highs and lows but we thank God for survival. A part of me wanted to keep this blog post light, beat around the bush and wrap it up but I refuse to romanticize my struggles. I’ve been through so much since I started fourth year and posterity must know. I apologize in advance if this post reaches 10k words😂😂

Since my current life is 90% dependent on medical school shenanigans, I’ve decided to divide this blog post into the postings I’ve done so far and talk about how they went.

If you’re active on social media, you see that path and pharm medical students rant about? That’s what I’m currently doing. Pathology and Pharmacology. Two fun besties💀💀

Nursing Posting

This is aka Introduction to Clinical Clerkship and I can’t remember anything significant happening in this six-week posting. I don’t even know what I learnt in this posting.

I just coasted through preparing for a different exam and before I knew it, the posting ended. In fact, I wish I attended more classes (just because I don’t know who’d end up reading this and free speech is a myth in this country). The usual thing was to have Introduction to Pathology and Pharmacology posting next but there was a change in my class academic calendar and we were made to do Junior Medical and Surgical posting which was a big, bad and bizarre idea in my opinion.

I’d give this posting a 6.5 because till now, I don’t understand it.

Junior Medical Posting, M1

This is definitely my favourite so far. M1 was a really good posting. The class was divided into two so half of the class started with M1 while the remaining half were in Junior Surgical posting, S1. We were divided into six firms, Cardiology, Gastroenterology and Dermatology, Pulmonology, Nephrology, Neurology and Endocrinology. I was in firm 3- pulmonology and it was my first exposure to clinics, the accident and emergency unit, ward rounds, ground rounds, morning reviews and it was really eye-opening. Healthcare remains underfunded in Nigeria and so many sad stories in the hospital are a result of the broken healthcare system. The heroes who aren’t wearing capes in Nigeria are doctors and other healthcare workers.

When I was still in preclinicals, I didn’t get it when my seniors in clinicals talked about the long standing hours in clinics and theatres, difficult clerkings, percussions during ward rounds and clerking presentations😭😭but now, ladies and gents, I get them like madddd. And what about the stuff in Internal Medicine??? IM doctors are the hospital geniuses in my opinion.

I think the fact that my class didn’t get to do the basics of path and pharm before starting clinical postings affected me because there were so many times I was lost in Internal Medicine stuff.

But all in all, it was a great posting. I’d rate it 8/10

Junior Surgical posting, S1

If there’s a sentence I’d use to describe this posting, it would be Affliction shall not rise up the second time. Somebody say a big Amen!!!

I didn’t enjoy this posting at all. Going from Internal Medicine to Surgery was as if I was in a boat with someone then the person dumped me into the river without me knowing how to swim. S1 stressed me sooo much. While I was in M1, I wasn’t that fascinated with clinical setting and I remember thinking “Hmmm, maybe I’d find surgery more interesting which is a weird thought because there has been no point in my life where the thought of being a surgeon excites me.

Looking back, I think what made this posting a bad one was the mindset I carried. I didn’t have enough positive outlook on my lectures, clinical activities, and personal diligence. I don’t think I’ve ever battled fear as much as I did in this posting and I lost the battle unfortunately because I failed my exams. My first official low in 400-level.

But I thank God I’ve healed and I’m in a much better place mentally. For anyone currently battling with fear, I recommend listening to The Supernatural Student playlist by Pastor Tara Akinkuade. It’s currently available on Spotify and his messages really helped me. Big shout out to Winners Campus Fellowship too for the academic program organized in September.

Special mention to S1 log book iykyk (I get PTSD if I see that book anywhere). I didn’t think I would encounter a posting worse than Neuro but S1 takes the cake🎂🎂 2.5/10

Introduction to Pathology

Hmmm, Intropath….

This posting started with my phone packing up in the first week and I was just thinking, God, why meee?? I just finished S1 and I was in a new posting, new me phase. You know that feeling where anytime you think about something happening to your phone, you’ll feel like you cannot survive it. I promise you, you will….

Intropath was just full of materials haunting me every day. I wake up thinking of how to cover the day materials and the one I’m owing and I go to bed thinking of how many materials I have left and how I can finish them before they get too many. There are four sub courses in pathology; Haematology, Medical Microbiology, Morbid Anatomy and Chemical Pathology and each one has its own wahala

I also didn’t like the fact that we had to write two exams in a day. After the first paper, I just wanted to go home, check my answers (yes, I’m part of the people who do this, I need that closure abeg😂😂) and sleep but I had to prepare for the next paper. And the timinggg, 45 mins each for essay and mcqs but in two days, it was all over.

I’d give Intropath a 6.5/10. It would have been a better experience if I was able to finish reading all my materials early and revised multiple times because there were some things I couldn’t recall in the exam hall due to poor revision.

Introduction to Pharmacology A

This is not even a real posting🙄 you finish your Intropath exams and the next thing, you’re writing your first pharmacology exams the next week. The exam was simply an hour of making serious decisions on 100 questions.

Anyways, I watched Afamefuna recently and I was greatly impressed with the storytelling and attention to detail. And while I know I’m late to Afamefuna’s party (it’s been released since 2023), I had a great time regardless.

To be honest, after reading a review about Afamefuna titled Gender, Afamefuna and the Nwa Boi system written by N.F Kenure and published by The Republic, I was skeptical about posting my review because I felt it was going to be so substandard.

But I reminded myself that 2025 is the year I plan to become a better writer putting out great opinion pieces and personal essays and I wanted my Substack to reflect that. So, instead of suppressing myself, I can acknowledge the great review written by N.F Kenure, discuss some of the points she made and still share my opinion.

I found it a big deal that Afamefuna impressed me because I’m not really a movies person. In fact for the past year, I can count the number of movies I’ve seen on one hand, Nollywood and Hollywood combined. I’m more of a TV series person.

Though I’ve heard about Afamefuna when it trended online, I was spurred to watch it after reading Blessings by Chukwuebuka Ibeh. I was drawn to Aboy’s story and though he had a brief run in the book, his story gave a glimpse into the Nwa Boi Apprenticeship system practiced by the Nigerian Igbos.

The protagonist in the movie- Afamefuna was born and bred in Onitsha, Anambra State and he moves to Lagos to work for a family friend- Chief Odogwu who is into the sales of tiles and other businesses. The story began with Afamefuna’s father remembrance party where he got arrested by a detective for having a hand in Paul (a fellow Nwa Boi) death. Then we watch the movie play out what led up to that scene.

I liked that Igbo language was spoken most of the time because language plays a huge part in storytelling, our language is part of our story. It was also nice to see real life play on TV. The mannerisms of the young Igbo boys I see in Ikotun, Yaba, Oshodi, Ojuelegba, Post Office (Ilorin) matched that of the boys working in Odogwu shop. Even majority of the Igbo people selling foodstuff around where I live are into the Nwa Boi Apprenticeship system.

There were few sayings in the book that really stuck with me. They include- An Igbo man doesn’t beg. The Igbos are arguably the most hardworking tribe in Nigeria, a lot of them are in most commercial cities in the country and that’s part of the reason why these cities are thriving. In Lagos, go to Alaba International market, Oyingbo, Ladipo market, Oke-Arin in Balogun market, Oshodi, Mushin, Aswani and Yaba to mention a few and you’ll understand what I’m saying.

It was also said that if you go to a place and you don’t see an Igbo man, leave because nothing is there and I hundred percent agree. There’s this saying that you can always find a Nigerian in every country in the world, I think that instead it should be that you’d always find an Igbo man in every country in the world. I mean there are a lot of mixed-race Nigerians in the world whose paternity are majorly traced to the Eastern part of Nigeria.

The Nigerian-Biafran war which was a terrible period for the Igbos was also mentioned and I think any Igbo-centered movie or book that doesn’t mention this war has done a great injustice. Kanayo O. Kanayo who played Mr. Odogwu mentioned that regardless of the amount you had in your bank before the war, everyone was given 20 pounds to start their life again. That brought about a sense of community and brotherhood among the Igbos which still plays out today.

There was also this scene where a Northern businessman wanted to collaborate with Mr. Odogwu and he refused saying his heart wasn’t in the deal. The Northern man asked if he was sure and he replied saying his mind has been made up long before now. I think this meant that Mr. Odogwu found it hard to see the Northerner in a good light as a result of the Nigerian-Biafran war which is totally understandable. Sometimes, your predecessors have created a stereotype for you.

As the story progresses, Afamefuna gets his freedom from his boss much to the displeasure of Paul. Paul was already working for Mr. Odogwu before Afamefuna came and he was the one to show him the ropes of what it entails being an Nwa Boi. I understand Paul’s jealousy and anger but such is life, some things are out of our control, we can only do our part and hope for the best. Afamefuna goes on to become a successful entrepreneur running his own business.

As if there wasn’t enough strife already with both men, Afamefuna has had a big crush on Odogwu’s daughter ever since he came to Lagos and unfortunately for him, Amaka (Odogwu’s daughter) has been in a relationship with Paul from her teenage years into adulthood. Amaka ended up leaving Paul for Afamefuna and this doubled Paul’s hate as he felt Afamefuna was living the life that should have been his. Paul ended up getting himself in deep waters which eventually killed him. I have a conspiracy theory that Mr. Odogwu probably knew about his daughter’s relationship with Paul and he granted Afamefuna freedom before Paul to spite him.

N.F Kenure made some great points about the femininization of education by the Igbos as seen in Afamefuna where the girls are encouraged to go to school and the boys are sent to be Nwa Bois. She also mentioned that the movie made the female gender be seen as something that should be desired and acquired after being successful and I totally agree with her. As she said, this point is seen when Mr. Odogwu warned Afamefuna about Lagos women when he started working for him, only for him to encourage Afamefuna to get married to his daughter when he became successful. Big lol.

Overall, I’m impressed with the cast and crew of Afamefuna. If you like Nollywood, I think you should watch if you haven’t already.

Life Update

1. I’m starting Clinicals in a few days’ time. I thought the regular holiday between preclinicals and clinicals would be longer but surprises happen. At first, I thought the news of resumption were just rumours, but alas, ladies and gentlemen, I’m back to the life of lecturers’ materials and class schedules. The break was great and even though I wasn’t able to do all the things I had set out to do but when there’s life, there’s hope.

2. If you’re yet to follow me on the gram (Instagram), you’re missing a lot. I’ve been channeling my inner Viola Davis over there and its been so much fun😂😂

3. I’m currently watching the kdrama Twenty five, Twenty One and I’m enjoying it so far though I already know it has a shitty ending. That was why I didn't watch it all this time.

4. I’m counting on myself to put out more posts this year, it may not be like what I’ve been doing so far as I’ve gotten quite bored with that. But I’m hoping to write more.

I find it easier to write about my struggles when I’m no longer going through them and that’s exactly what I'm doing now. I wrote the least this year because I didn’t have the courage to write during my problems and maybe I’m not there yet.

2024 was an emotional rollercoaster for me and it went downhill so fast. About 80 percent of my time was spent in school (me going through my third year and def my worst year of medical school). I’ve divided 2024 into three parts- The Great, The Not-So-Great and The Ugly. Let’s start with The Great (good news first👌).

THE GREAT

The greatest news I have to share this year is me passing my First Professional MBBS Examinations and getting promoted to the clinical side of medical school😎 Anyone who has written their first MB knows the amount of work that goes into preparing for it and writing it. I’m so happy to be done with Preclinicals and I’m enjoying my well-deserved break.

I also had my first distinction in medical school this year- Neurobiochemistry. There were other great moments like COBES (If you haven’t watched any of my COBES videos, you should. It’s an highlight on my Instagram), and CMDA’s WZPMC which added a lot of colour to my otherwise drab third year (there’s a video on it too).

THE NOT-SO-GREAT

300-level was the class I struggled the most and I think most of it cams from the mental stress of being in school for too long. I didn’t go home throughout and looking back now, I should have been more intentional about going out to have fun.

I had my first fail in medical school this year- a 49.1 in Extremities and I do not wish the whole mental gymnastics that comes with failing an exam on anyone. The results came in a few days to our Neuro exams and I had this mentality of ‘moving on, not dwelling on it’ and all of that craziness which made things worse.

Now, I think the best way to address failing an exam is to look at it objectively- what went wrong and what can I do to prevent it from happening again. But there’s this ‘culture’ or ‘way of thinking’ (although not everyone does this) in medical school that doesn’t seem to promote it.

We’re encouraged to move on to the next posting, the next incourse, and the next exam and when you do this without addressing the real issue (which is what exactly made you fail), you make the same mistake over and over again. And your results don’t get better.

I blocked out the result from my mind and I moved on to the next exam which was Neuroanatomy and that turned out to be the worst exam I’ve written so far. There was this voice that kept on telling me I could fail it just like Extremities for a moment in the hall, I had to pray for help because my mind kept on playing different scenarios. After that exam I’ve never prayed more for a 50 in my entire life😅😅😭😭

Neuro posting this year was my worst and final posting in Preclinicals and I just disliked everything about it before we started and that probably made matters worse. The University started having electricity and water issues, school stress was increasing and then I had to change my place of accommodation about 3 weeks to my Neuro exams. By September, I had mentally clocked out of school.

And even though my first distinction was in Neuro posting, I also had my first set of 50s in the same posting and at that point, I couldn’t care less. I just knew I tried my best and if that gave me a 50-something, then so be it. Someone made a statement to me while I was ranting during one of my low moments and it was- your scores don’t define you and I’m saying this to someone who thinks they do, they absolutely do not!

2024 was also the year I faced the most rejections and some were really painful but sometimes, I may not be good enough yet and that’s okay. Also, I’d like to believe time and chance happens to us all.

What made me get through this not-so-great part was being honest about my struggles and I totally recommend it to anyone having a hard time in medical school. Now, honesty isn’t always going to be comfortable because it requires being vulnerable but it is necessary. Especially to the people who are above you and have gone through your present class. They know exactly how you feel and are well experienced to give you the best advices.

THE UGLY

I lost so many people this year that I’m still in disbelief as to how life can be so unpredictable. The first one to break me was the death of the friend who gave me the name LamLam and then a family friend who was really instrumental in me studying Medicine. I'd like to believe they are all in a better place❤️

All in all, third year was a crazy school year and there were plenty times I almost lost it. Big shout out to my family, friends, senior colleagues and everyone else who held my hand throughout Preclinicals. It’s a privilege to cross to the other side where I hope brighter days await.

I got Lucky Girl last year at Ake Festival after listening to a book discussion by it's author- Irene Muchemi-Ndiritu. I was interested in reading more African non-Nigerian books and my choice was worth it (lucky dancee💃🏽💃🏽)

Lucky girl follows the life of Soila- a Kenyan girl who was raised by a stern and unyielding mother. Soila grew up with her aunties living a very sheltered life. After a sexual assault by a close family friend, her stance on studying abroad became stronger. New York offered her an escape from her mother’s overbearing parenting, the emotional trauma of sexual assault and the overwhelming presence of her aunties.

In America, Soila is shocked by the vast differences between Nairobi and New York. She struggles to understand racism and hostility to black people. At first, she feels racism is the last thing an African would complain about when there are better opportunities in America as opposed to their home country. The roads are better, the government is better, the system is working so why do you have to complain just because someone touches your natural hair without permission? Or someone holds their purse a little tighter when you get on the bus because you’re black? Or someone insists on speaking to your white boss at the store? Just focus on making it and everything else would be fine.

And while I get where she is coming from as a NIGERIAN living in NIGERIA, racism should never be excused. Anyways, Soila learns about racism and let me say her eyes of understanding were opened by Leticia, her African-American best friend and Alex, her Kenyan-American boyfriend. To be real, I really liked Alex and Soila’s relationship, it was cute and enjoyable to read (young love>>>), but there was a plot twist in her love life which I’m not going to say because I want you to read the book😉

Soila and her mother’s difficult relationship worsen as the book progresses. Her mum wants her to pursue a career in economics so she can take over the family business but photography tugs at Soila’s heart. It was really nice to see Irene Muchemi-Ndiritu highlight careers a lot of African parents would want their kids to pursue in the university either home or abroad and the necessity of children breaking away from the shackles of their parents. Lucky Girl shows the average African boomer reasoning and it’s quite interesting that a lot of the sentences written in the book were things people around me would say.

Thankfully, mother and daughter relationship got better albeit it took an unfortunate incident for that to happen💔 Lucky Girl is a book on family, love, hurt, parenting and adulthood. I really enjoyed reading this one.

So, what have I been up to since my last post in January👀

1. Omo, a lot has happened oo and a lot is still happening lol. I’m currently in my last posting in preclinicals (lucky danceee💃🏽💃🏽😂) which is Neuro and I can see the finishing line on this side of medical school. I look back to 100 level and I thank God for how far he has brought me and where he’s taking me.

2. I’ve written a couple of exams. The first one being my COBES posting exam (COBES stands for Community Based Experience and Service). It was a very fun posting, catch all the highlights of my COBES posting here. The last exams I wrote were my Git/Ugs/Endo/Extremities exams. It was a lot but I’m trusting God for excellent results.

3. I’ve decided to start reading fiction again. Well, it’s not as if I took a break but I think I got carried away by the shenanigans of medical school and I didn’t know when I stopped doing the things I enjoyed. As a result of this, I got weary but thanks to God, I’ve moved on from that phase and I’ve decided to make more important use of my study breaks (which tbh is me logging off Twitter more 🙈🙈).

Happy New Year!!! This sounds so late😂😂 but it’s the first post of the yearrrr

It’s the MB class guysss💃(tbh, I don’t think I’m as excited as that emoji😂😂 but I couldn’t find a better one to convey my emotions). Sometimes, it feels surreal because I remember when I posted my 35 days in medical school article and now, this is me in the last phase of pre-clinicals.

There’s a lot of work to do and the stakes are higher but that’s what happens as you move up classes in medical school, the workload becomes larger but you get tougher.

So in 300-level, the first posting is the Gastrointestinal system posting which runs for four weeks, the second posting is the Urogenital system runs for four weeks too, then the Endocrine system posting for physiology and biochemistry which runs for four weeks too and during this posting we’d be doing Extremities in Anatomy. The first exam in third year is on these four postings. Then, we’d have our Head and Neck and Neuro postings and exams before we write the famous MB exam.

As someone who is really passionate about writing and publishing, literary events are functions I look forward to being a part of. Within the past year, I’ve been privileged to attend Ake Arts and Book Festival twice, Narrative Landscape Open House, Rovingheights 2022 Book swap event, How to Write about Africa workshop organized by Wale Lawal and The Dawn Project literary prize giving and award ceremony.

Literary events help me connect with writers, storytellers, authors (it’s really nice to get your books signed), publishers, book lovers and people who love to read in general. Meeting people who are already doing what you want to do and getting advice from them saves time and energy.

I attended How to Write about Africa workshop back in school (it was organized by UCJ, Unilorin) and I learnt more about storytelling and writing creative non-fiction. Many thanks to Wale Lawal for teaching and UCJ Unilorin for hosting.

At Narrative Landscape Open House Event, Eghosa Imasuen, the executive director and also the author of Fine Boys was kind enough to chat with us and he explained the process that went into republishing Chimamanda’s collection and other books. He also talked about other areas of publishing like the business side and books cover art which has to convey what the book is about. It was a wonderful event. Watch my Instagram reel about it here

At Ake Festival, I enjoyed great panel discussions about topics like Using film to drive narrative change in Africa, Impact of artificial intelligence on Africa (where people shared honest opinions about chatGPT😅), Building a sustainable publishing industry in Africa, Nigeria’s gender wars (this panel was the hottest🔥great respect to Aisha Salaudeen🙌), etc. We also had book chats with Wole Talabi, DK Nuoro, Bolu Babalola, Petina Gappah, Abubakar Adam Ibrahim, Dipo Faloyin, Olusegun Aganga, Stephen Buoro, Omolola Ijeoma Ogunyemi and many other brilliant authors.

On the second day, we had an African book quiz which was interesting and very chaotic😂😂 Ake Festival was a very fulfilling and great experience, it’s fast becoming a yearly tradition and I loveeet. I met Made Kuti too❤ All my pictures from Ake are here

The Dawn project was a prize-giving and award ceremony which had the likes of Iretiola Doyle, Prof Akin Abayomi, Mrs Folasade Ogunsola (the Vice-Chancellor University of Lagos) among other dignitaries present. The event rewarded people who had participated in the competition and I liked that it included creatives from junior secondary school to university level and it had categories like music, essays, poems and art.

Going to all these events has made me more exposed to the literary space and has improved my social skills to an extent. If you’re someone who enjoys reading and writing (fiction or non-fiction), I think it’s important to attend literary events if you can. It expands your knowledge and you get to meet people with common interests. If you don’t know where to start, or you don’t know when these events happen, you can follow accounts like Rovingheights, Ake Festival, Narrative landscape, Republic Journal and Lola Shoneyin and from there you can curate your timeline to see book-related events.

What do you do you find out your only child died in a shocking way?

Mojisola and Titus were living a quiet and boring life in Cape Town when the news came in that Yinka had died in Gauteng, Johannesburg. The story tells us the unusual way Mojisola grieves for her daughter, hence the title and I loved that the title of the book matches the general theme of the story. 

Unusual grief showed me that people grieve differently and you can end up knowing more about someone when they're dead than when they were alive.

The book was set in Ile-Ife, Cape Town and Johannesburg and I liked that the author described the places as she told the story. The book also explored issues like parenting, post-partum depression, motherhood, BDSM, loneliness and self-discovery.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading and I intend to read more books written by Yewande Omotoso. You should pick up Unusual Grief too🤗

If you're familiar with Chimeka Garricks pen game, you would know that he is one of the best Nigerian writers out there.

I've had this book on my to-be-read list for a long while so I was really looking forward to reading it. The title may sound weird but reading the book would help you understand it better (people's future could end before it even began).

The book follows the lives of four friends who grew up in Asiama Town, Niger Delta. Fearless but reckless Doye, Innocent but sanctimonious Amaibi, Industrious Kaniye (I'll take not finding a less positive word to describe Kaniye as my personal bias) and friendly but cowardly Tubo.

My favourite character started out to be Tubo but ended up being Kaniye. This is interesting because in the author's note, Chimeka Garricks wrote and I quote "Kaniye appeal to the female readers of the manuscript was better than expected"

The book was set in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s of Niger Delta and it addressed issues like Niger Delta militants, Nigeria's military regime, Oil bunkering and kidnapping of expatriates. It also addressed bad governance and greedy leaders. Having read A Broken People's Playlist also written by Chimeka Garricks, Tomorrow died Yesterday increased my interest in Port-Harcourt (there were plenty times I craved Port-Harcourt's bole and fish😅😅). Also note that Deola and Kaniye were mentioned in the last story of A Broken People's Playlist.

I'm a believer of great friendships and Tomorrow died Yesterday showed how friendships change over the years. I also learnt that life is not just black and white, there are a lot of grey areas. I did not expect the book to end the way it did but I'd always admire authors who write tragedy so well.

Tomorrow died yesterday is a solid 10/10. I totally recommend. If you've read the book, I'd like to know your thoughts about it below.

P.S. I’m done with second year of medical school and I've been at home for a while now. I haven't done anything really special and sometimes I worry if I've become too comfortable but I've also realised that breaks are important and they help us recharge and think of new ideas. Anyone in medical school knows exams are regular events, it’s either you’re writing one or preparing for one. So far, I’ve written two exams and I talked about the first one on this space.

One of my aims when I started this blog was not only to talk about my experiences in medical school but other people experiences too, majorly to give other students most especially aspirants an insight into the realities of medical school.

And while I’m about to wrap up my second year, I wanted to share the experiences of other students in my class. I reached out to some of my friends to talk about how their exam preparations went, the examination period and their results so far. Thankfully, they humoured me. God bless you guys❤

Note- We write two exams in 200 level, the CBD/IBS exams and the comprehensive promotional exam. I explained the two exams in the comment section of the 35 Days in Medical School article. Let’s get into ittt💃💃💃              

DEDE                                                   

Well, I had started reading way before resumption so there was no pressure when we started our 200 level posting. While I still read, I also flexed. For my CBD/IBS results, anatomy came out really niceeee, biochemistry was fairly okay while physiology didn’t go well. My expectations were to get 60s and 70s but only anatomy did. During comprehensive exam preparations, I was more intense (with what my eyes saw during CBD/IBS, dem no dey tell pesin twice😂). I moved with friends and classmates to collect stuff as this medical school is not an alone something. Well, the exams went well except biochemistry which broke my heart. I expect to see progress when the results are released.

Coming into 200 level, I got a lot of OTs from seniors about how to plan and read during the posting. Man, it was a lot. I remember the fear, anxiety and nerves as I went to class day after day to finish the course outline that seemed unending. As the exams got closer, one thing I did was pray. I just trusted God, cried and read what I could with guidance and past questions. CBD/IBS results were lesser than what I hoped for but better than what I expected after the exams. Comprehensive is definitely my most challenging exam of all time and this was evident in the mistakes I made during the course of the exam.

I was involved in a lot of extracurricular activities so I could not cover most of the course outline before the exams (normally it’s always the reverse). Well, I crash read for both CBD/IBS and comprehensive. Preparing for CBD/IBS was more enjoyable and interesting because of the smaller workload and I was able to cover all topics before the exam. I had my highest score in physiology which I thought would be my lowest and my lowest score in anatomy which I thought would be highest. For comprehensive, I got scared because two weeks to the exam, I still had a lot to read but I put myself together and I formed the most important outlines. Exam week came and I was burnt out, I selected topics to actively and passively read. I’m happy I was able to put in my best and I hope for great results.

Having written comprehensive, CBD/IBS feels like a test lol. For CBD/IBS, I started reading the day we resumed and I made sure to read every day during the posting. The exams were okay. Physiology was my best paper and I had my highest score there, I think almost everybody did too. All my scores were two to three marks away from each other. Preparing for comprehensive was tougher because of the larger workload but God came through. Physiology didn’t go as well as I wanted, but I’m hoping and praying all my results come out well.

For me, I prepared better for CBD/IBS exams than for comprehensive. Resuming 200 level, the energy was high and a lot of senior students advised us to start reading seriously because our time in college has started counting. However, I didn’t prepare enough during the RS/CVS posting so I had a lot of work to do during the exam period. It was really stressful, I took energy drink on some days in order not to sleep. My CBD/IBS results were great. Alhamdulillah, I was really surprised at my scores and I hope comprehensive comes out well.

I wrote the first part of this blog post in January and I feel it’s a good thing I’m writing the second part in July. That’s a six month difference so if you were a passive aggressive person at the beginning of the year, you don’t have to stay so till the end of the year. Isn’t that wonderful??😇😇 If you didn’t get to read my post in January, you can do so after reading this❤

I’d be using PG to denote either passive aggression, passive aggressive or passive aggressiveness. In the first part of this post, I talked about signs of PG and how to deal with someone being PG. Today, I’ll be talking about how to stop being PG. Let’s get into itttt💃💃

1.     If you feel a negative emotion come over you, give yourself time to think before you act. You can attempt to calm yourself down with a few deep breaths. Try to be aware of your behavior and opt to express your emotions in an honest and healthy way. Always remember that you can have difficult conversations respectfully.

2.     Use your words carefully and don’t let your emotions control you. If you say something you didn’t mean in anger, there’s no way to ‘unsay’ it or take it back.

3.     Know what triggers you. Everyone has a pet peeve, knowing yours would help you to prepare in handling a triggering situation when it comes. (Everyone that has that controversial topic that stimulates their adrenaline and makes them ready for a fight).

4.     Learn to be open- say what you feel. Don’t bottle up your emotions. Be assertive, problems are solved through confrontations because both parties reach an understanding. Nobody can read your mind🌚

5.     Find the root- find out the things that make you passive aggressive.

6.     Be patient- change takes time and effort. Overcoming habits is a process.

At the end of the day, PG is neither beneficial nor helpful. It is not a solution as it makes things even worse. Get rid of the fear of confrontation and release your aggression in an assertive way. And please if you want to have a difficult conversation with someone, speaking with the person physically or making a phone call is way better than texting.

A lot of PG people have learnt that anger is bad so they prefer to give the angry smile.

1.     Two of my results have been released and I bless the name of the Lord for my scores. I’m very grateful to Baba God and I hope they get better in subsequent exams.

2.     Academically, I’m in a critical place and I hope I pull through. The workload is more and my exams are getting closer. Medical school can be a tough place but my Jesus is greater.

Hi there🤗 welcome to another blog post from LamLam, I hope this meets you well. In today’s post, I’ll be ranting about my concluded exams in medical school. Honestly, I didn’t plan on talking about my exams and how they went here but I kept having a nudge to talk about it. So, how did my exams go?

We thank God!!! I know this is not a precise answer but I thank the name of the Lord that I’m still alive and breathing after writing my CBD/IBS exams😂😂 (though I’ve rested properly now, we finished 27^th of April).

For me, the exams weren’t great and they weren’t bad too. Just in the middle. The way the exams went was very different from how I had thought it was going to be. Well, our CBD/IBS exams were not regular and the school used a different approach in some areas.

So back to my exams….

I wrote my Anatomy exam first- MCQs and theory. And after the exam, I felt bad myself. It was as if I was feeling bad for the person that wrote that exam (this was me btw), like LamLam the storyteller was feeling bad for Olamide the student. But thankfully, they got better- I preferred my Biochemistry to my Anatomy and I preferred my Physiology to my Biochemistry.

Then we wrote practicals- steeplechase for Anatomy. For non-medical students, steeplechase is when students are asked to identify microscopic slides, bones, practical equipment, micrographs and the likes.

The students are expected to answer questions asked about the object placed in front of them and a bell is rung every 30 seconds where the students are mandated to move to the next question either in front or behind them. Then for Physiology and Medical Biochemistry, we wrote alternative to practicals.

I remember cramming some last minute stuff few minutes before my Physiology practical and I saw questions on what I crammed but guess what- I totally forgot😭😭😂😂😂 (if you have any tips on cramming effectively at the last minute, please share it in the comments, help a sister😭😭).

I was telling a friend that after the CBD/IBS exam, they should just give me my certificate because God knows I went through a lot!!! And I still have a long way to go, our Comprehensive exams which is a promotional exam would be written at the end of 200 level and they’re still a lot of exams I would write as long as I’m medical school so I might as well just get used to it.

Anyways, what have I been up to since my last paper?

1.     I’ve been restingggggg!!! A lot actually😂😂 and I have things to read. Most days I’m like God, when would my suffering end??

2.     For a month now I started using Spotify premium for students and I’m enjoying my experience so far. A friend and I were arguing on Twitter about which is better between Spotify and Apple music. I was Team Spotify and he was Team Apple music. The main thing I like about is its playlist feature. I’m a person that gets bored of songs easily and Spotify helps in bringing different songs under the same genre together.

3.     I think I’m turning into a Yoruba aunty😂 I started listening to Yinka Ayefele, King Sunny Ade and a lot of Gospel Tungba songs lately and I’m glad that as a Yoruba girl, I understand the language and I can groove to Yoruba songs. When I was younger, I wondered why they played those songs at Owanbes but now I get it.

4.     May is my favourite month of the year and I’ll be turning 21 on the 31^st😛😝😝💃💃It’s really paining me that I’d have to wait 10 more years to do ‘31^st on the 31^st😭😭’ but at least I can do she’s 21 and sexyyy💃💃🥂 but then, I have lectures that day😭😭

Author of book- Chimeka Garricks

Hello everyone, welcome back to another blog post💃💃💃 I also wrote a book summary and it’s just below this review because I can’t have an entire book summary just sitting in my folders doing nothing. If you’re a lover of spoilers like me, you can go ahead and read the summary but if you’re not, just read the review and pass😅😅 This book consists of 12 stories which were inspired by songs and like the title suggests the songs and the stories were actually for broken people.

Some of the stories were written in a guy’s point of view and it was eye-opening seeing how some men think. In most of the books I’ve read, the protagonist is always a female so this was a breath of fresh air.

The stories were emotional and my favourite story would be the first, second and ninth one. I liked that the stories were set in Port-Harcourt, as it made me know more about the city and its people. I love Lagos but it was nice to read a story that wasn’t set in Lagos.

I’ll recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something new, emotional and engaging. If you’re a lover of books with short stories like Nearly all men in Lagos Are Mad by Damilare Kuku and The Thing Around your Neck by Chimamanda Adichie, you’d enjoy reading A Broken People’s Playlist🥰🥰 If you feel like knowing more about the book, just read my book summary. Deep down, I think I love reading sad and emotional stories and I really admire authors who write them❤. This book is a solid 9/10 for me. Well done Chimeka Garricks, thank you for choosing to write this.

P.S- I met Chimeka Garricks at the Ake Arts and Book Festival and I was really excited😅😅 It’s always nice seeing the authors of books you enjoyed reading.

Here’s a short piece about each story👇

1.     This story is about two lovebirds who never got the chance to properly be together. I did not see the ending of this story coming at all. I love how the story depicts how life can be sometimes- some things just don’t work the way we think it would.

2.     This story follows the life of a young boy who had a cheating father and a mother with a very hot temper. The protagonist is a music lover who creates playlists and works as a DJ. He got his love for music from his dad much to the displeasure of his mom. I loved the raw honesty in this story and I admire the author’s play with words.

3.      It tells us about an elder brother's love for his younger brother. Despite all what Dami did, Priye still loved him. It also reminds us that siblings can be so close yet so far, but as they say, Blood is thicker than water. This story was a bit sad as I wished Dami didn't end like that.

4. The story follows Ukela, a young woman with a late mom and an absentee father who was slowly returning to her life. Her daddy issues made it hard for her to be vulnerable emotionally to other men and as a result of this, she prefers being in a sexual relationship than an emotional one. She finally meets someone who likes her for who she is.

5. It follows the life of a military man and a young gay boy in Port-Harcourt. The boy was unfortunately at the wrong place at the wrong time. This is an honest narration of what really happens in Nigerian Military. The innocent ones are killed and the ones responsible don't face the necessary consequences. And thinking about it, it made me realise that a lot of young people have died for nothing in this country and would continue to die for nothing unless something changes. This was a really sad one though.

6. This is a very funny one. It's about the life of four friends where two out of the four wives decided to put a concoction in their food in order to allow their husbands stay faithful in their marriage. One of them won't have sexual arousal with any woman except his wife, the other one's mistress would start smelling like chicken dung to him. This story was so funny and I really liked some of the Igbo phrases. Cheating is not restricted to Lagos men, Port-Harcourt men are good at it too. Damilare Kuku would like this story👀👀 Just sayinnn😂😂

7. This is an emotional story about a waiting couple. The main protagonist thinks God is punishing him because he forced his teenage girlfriend to abort a pregnancy for him when she was four months gone. Eventually his wife gives birth to a son and the doctor who births his son is someone he least expects.

8. This is a somewhat painful story about a man who cheats on his wife and lived to regret that one decision for the rest of life. Though his wife never divorced him, she couldn’t love him the way she used to and that made him realise that he would never get her old self back. This story makes me ask these questions again, Is cheating actually a deal breaker in all relationships?? And can spouses still stay married to each other even after one of them has cheated?? Guess different people would have different answers. Tell me yours in the comment section

9. This is an emotional story on brotherhood. It talks about the bromance between two guys in which one of them later dies. This story really explains how those in a confraternity see the group as opposed to how those on the outside think it is. It also honestly explains the different types of grief experienced by people who have lost someone.

10. This is a short story about a boy who found out when he was sixteen that the man he had called Dad all his life is not his biological father. The main protagonist wants to be a footballer but was scammed by a man who claims to be a FIFA agent. The sad but funny thing about this story was that he had to steal money from his parents to pay this "so-called" FIFA agent. His biological father tried reconnecting back with him, but he was dead by the time JJ got to know about him. This story shows that every choice made by man has a consequence- good or bad. And life is too short to make stupid decisions.

11. This is a heart-wrenching story about a man who was raped at the age of seven by his family house-help. He is an alcoholic, has gone for rehab 13 times, wrecked his marriage and all his attempts at being sober failed till he met someone new. His outlook on life and how he lives is based on this unfortunate incident that happened in his childhood. The ending of this story was obscure but I really felt bad for him.

12. This is a sad story about a man who lost his wife to a ruptured brain aneurysm and a doctor who really loved and admired the couple. This story reminds us that death is inevitable and even though the doctor and the man's children tried to fill up his life after his wife's death, he had lost a part of himself.

Hello everyone, welcome back to another post on the blog💃I know it’s been a while since I posted last🥰 and life has really been in the way (honestly, it has just been medical school showing me shege😭)

As most of you know, I started medical school officially more than a month ago and I’ve had less time to spend on the blog compared to when I was at home. Also, my last post on passive aggression wasn’t opening on the Substack mobile app and I wanted the team to resolve that before putting out another blog post.

Also, in as much as I love blogging and creating content, I have to strike a balance between my school work and my blog. Medical school sits pretty at the top of my list of priorities but at the same time this blog also has to be kept alive for my mental health because writing is an outlet for me- it keeps me sane❤ Please subscribe if you haven’t🤗

So, back to medical school. During my first two weeks here- I was always stressed. Every. Single. Day. Sometimes when I wake up in the mornings, I’m tired for the whole day alreadyyy and can’t wait for it to end. Even though, I’ve always known medical school would be tough- I didn’t prep myself😂😂😭 Here’s a couple of my tweets when shege level was very high😂😂😭😭

The first thing that threw me off  balance was our class schedules- we have classes every day from Mondays to Fridays. Coming from 100 level where most of our classes were via Zoom to attending classes every day in corporate wears and flat shoes, I had to adjust fast in order not to be left behind.

Here in Unilorin medical school, second year medical students write their first medical school exam in the 10^th week after classes officially begin- I’ll explain more in the comments. We are been taught three courses Anatomy (which is divided into Embryology, Histology and Genetics), Physiology and Medical Biochemistry.

The more I spend time in medical school, the more I realize that Hmmm- this is students in upper levels talked about. Right now, I think I’ve adjusted to the system to an extent and if you’re a medical school aspirant reading this- I’d advise you to ask other medical students for their experience and decide if that is what you want for yourself. I’d also be releasing more posts about medical school as time goes on.

For me, I think I’ve always loved the prestige associated with Doctors (This prestige has reduced so much now😭😭😂) and for a long time, I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. Also, I wrote JAMBs and I begged God that I cannot come and suffer all these Jamb registrations and not enter university for Medicine and Surgery oo. It has to work out plsss😂

All in all, I’d say I’m quite enjoying the experience. In as much as it’s a tough place- there are so many things that gives me joy. Weirdly, I’m enjoying my second year in university way better than my very chilled first year.

This is the first post of the year and I’m really looking forward to my Substack experience with you this year. If I would describe 2022 in a word- I’ll use amazing. I finally started my blog and that’d be the best decision I made last year. Even though I wasn’t able to do all I hoped to during the strike, I’d say I had a pretty great year.

While entertaining the idea of writing on this topic, I was also debating if I was ready to be vulnerable as I was on this table.

This is funny because I realized I was a passive aggressive person during a misunderstanding I had with someone last year and I really disliked how I handled the situation. And just like I did when I noticed I was taking things too personally back then, I decided to find out ways on how to stop.

Now, because passive-aggressiveness is a long word, I’ll be using PG to denote either passive aggression, passive aggressive or passive aggressiveness, the context in the sentence would tell you which one.

According to Psych2Go channel on YouTube, the term ‘passive-aggression’ originated in the American military during World War II. It was used to describe soldiers who refused to comply with orders in a particular way. Rather than refusing outright, they sulked, procrastinated and were deliberately inefficient. This attitude displayed by the soldiers is an indication of being passive aggressive.

So, how do you know if you or someone you know is a passive aggressive person? Here are more signs below👇

1.     You hate direct confrontations- You tend to avoid conflicts in all the best ways possible. If it has to do with challenging someone who offended you face-to-face, you’re out.

2.     Using indirect communication that has to be analyzed to know their meaning. Examples include; giving the silent treatment or unhelpful responses like Whatever, leave me alone, Okay, Do you, etc. to people you’re angry with, procrastinating on purpose, withdrawing rather than expressing hostility or being hostile with a smile.

3.     Giving subtle jabs and insults instead of talking about your feelings. Or giving people backhanded compliments (serious thinking is required to know if it’s a compliment or an insult).

4.     Keeping scores- you like keeping track of all the favours you did for someone.

5.     You tend to sabotage- you take your anger out by deliberately messing things up for the person who made you feel angry.

If after reading these signs you figure out that you’re a passive aggressive person, don’t beat yourself up about it🤗 The fact that you recognize these behaviours as part of your actions is a good step in the right direction❤

A lot of people are being PG because it’s easier than being assertive and others are PG due to their background or upbringing. They’ve been taught that expressing anger is a bad thing. We should note that PG is also ‘aggression’ but in a subtle way and according to Dr Marie Fang, PG is the space between anger and silence.

Now, what if someone you know is giving you PG energy? You’ve tried to get them talk about their feelings but they’re aren’t budging. The first thing you should do is to send them this blog post😅😅 (just kidding but if you’re really close to them, you can try. 2023 is the year of growth🥂).

Here are some tips on how to be immune to PG and how to handle a situation with a PG person. Continue reading

1.     One thing you should always know is that PG people want you to be defensive so you already think you’re wrong- Don’t accept the blame yet, check if you’re really wrong.

2.     Remember that you only have control over your own behavior- you can’t change people.

3.     Try calling them out genuinely. Ask them what they want from the situation and what they hope to achieve by giving out that energy.

4.     People who are PG are likely to stay away from you if they know you know about it. They are afraid you might expose them when they see that their PG doesn’t work on you.

5.     To figure out if someone is giving you PG energy, you must be able to read non-verbal communication- it’s more powerful than verbal communication (open your eyezzzzzz👀👀)

On reading non-verbal communication, I have a personal story which I would share in the part two of this blog post (look forward to it!!!). Here’s a little catch up since Christmas day👇

1.     I finished reading After Lives by Abdulrazak Gurnah (2021 Noble prize winner) and it was an amazing read. This book reminded me of my love for historical fiction- I’ll always love books like The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, And the Mountains Echoed and Pachinko.

2.     I’ll be going back to school this week and my enthusiasm to resume is around 70 percent. It’s as if I’ve been dreading school work.😅😭😭 Lmao.

3.     I’m really enjoying songs by Bidemi Olaoba, Laolu Gbenjo and Bisi Immanuel (It’s everywhere on Tiktok and I’m enjoying the melody💃💃)

I know many of us know the essence of Christmas which includes telling the whole world about the birth of our Saviour and Messiah- Jesus Christ who is the reason for the season. 1.     December 25 was announced the official celebration day of Christmas in 350 A.D by the Bishop of Rome, Pope Julius I.

2.     The traditional three colours of Christmas are green, red and gold. Green represents life and rebirth, Red represents the blood of Christ and gold represents wealth and royalty. This fact explains a lot regarding colours used in Christmas celebrations.

3.     Sacrifice is the main theme of Christmas, it means the spirit of giving. Also, the reason we give presents at Christmas is to symbolize the gifts given to baby Jesus by the three wise men. I totally agree and can relate to this fact because during Christmas, we would always receive gifts from family and friends, food and other necessities are given to the needy. Just as God gave his only begotten son to die for us and save us.

4.     Contrary to what some may think about others saying Merry Xmas in place of Merry Christmas, people say Xmas because the ‘X’ is the first letter in the Greek word for Christ.

5.     The Christmas trees symbolizes the Garden of Eden and the apples hung on it (tree in the Garden of Eden) may be the origin of Christmas decorations.

6.     The Holly wreath symbolizes Christ crown of thorns while the red berries are drops of his blood. There are actually different beliefs concerning the wreath. Some say it represents an unending circle of life, with no beginning and no end, a school of thought says wreaths are hung on the door to invite the spirit of Christmas to enter the home and bring good luck. Others say it embodies eternal life.

7.     We all know the 12 days of Christmas song. Well, December 25 to January 5 is actually referred to as ‘Christmastide’ or ’12 holy days’

8.     There are two islands in the world that are named Christmas. One is in the Indian Ocean and it’s close to Australia and Indonesia while the other is in the Pacific Ocean and is part of the Republic of Kiritimati.

9.      One thousand copies of the first Christmas card was sold in 1843. Wow!!! That’s a lot.😮😮 Even till today, Christmas remains the largest card sending holiday in the world.

10.     One in every three people worldwide celebrate Christmas, including 2.4 billion Christians. That’s a lot of people!!!
