This week begins the three day maintenance on our AC system! Due to the maintenance, the library will be experiencing higher temperatures than normal. As a result, the following programs have been postponed to Wednesday, September 9th:

Again, these programs will meet at their regularly scheduled times on Wednesday, September 9th. We apologize for any inconvenience but we are very excited to see you all for these programs next week! AC maintenance will be ongoing from Monday, August 31st to Wednesday, September 2nd; the library will experience higher temperatures than normal during this period.

Colin Gets Promoted and Dooms the World by Mark Waddell

What a cover (and title)! A deal with a mysterious entity goes wrong?! Who would have seen that coming? At least you’re the CEO’s executive assistant now which means you get to take revenge on the coworkers that wronged you! A fun read so far that has me wondering if poor Colin will get caught by Management for his deal with the mysterious entity. - Eric

I just started this one and am already getting major Studio Ghibli vibes (think Spirited Away). Twenty-seven-year-old Yeon-hwa inherits a neighborhood bakery and a large debt from her grandmother. Per the conditions of the will and in order for the debt to be mysteriously paid off, she must keep the shop open for another month and only open to customers between the hours of 10PM until midnight. Who will these late night customers be? I’m curious to find out! I think this will be a great read for any fans of Japanese and/or Korean cozy fiction. - Jade

In case you missed them, we’ve had two Library After Dark events in the year so far. In January, we had A Night with Susan Straight, featuring her latest book, Sacrament, and in February, we had our annual Book Fest celebrating the Romantasy genre this year. At Book Fest we featured Sara Hashem, author of The Jasad Heir, and Falon Ballard, author of Something Wicked.

AND in March, we’ll be featuring Paul Bradley Carr, author and co-owner of the Best Bookstore in Palm Springs, the man does it all! Join us for a reading, discussion, and signing of The Confessions! Set to occur during our annual Festival of Frights celebration, under the instruction of Linh Ho Young, a professional SFX makeup artist and instructor at COD, teens will have the chance to learn how to transform their appearances and enhance their costumes with special effects and cosmetics. Library After Dark!

Library After Dark makes a return this October with our first annual Tales of Terror, a celebration of the Horror genre, and A Night of Tarot.

Tales of Terror

We start off our Library After Dark programming with our first annual Tales of Terror on Friday, October 10th and Saturday, October 11th. That’s right, ghouls, Tales of Terror is a two night event. The scariest part? Registration is required! BUT, there is no need to worry as registration is free and we have friendly staff waiting to help you register, just call, click below, or visit us to register.

For our first night on Friday, October 10th at 4:30 PM, we begin with a Writing Workshop led by the featured author himself, Nicholas Belardes! Nicholas will walk us through the creation of our own monster character. All writing levels are welcome! Following the Writing Workshop, at 5:30 PM is the Book Club to discuss Nicholas’ latest novel, Ten Sleep. Yes, he will also be joining us for this one!

For Night Two, Nicholas joins us once again for Author Night at 5:30 PM where we interview him on his work, his latest novel Ten Sleep and more! Following the interview, we move into an audience Q&A and a book signing! Also joining us will be The Best Bookstore in Palm Springs selling Nicholas’ books.

A Night of Tarot

Join us on Saturday, October 25th at 5:00 PM, right after our Festival of Frights: Library 51 celebration, for A Night of Tarot! Ever since watching episode 7 of Agatha All Along last year, I have been wanting to learn more about tarot and with no new Agatha All Along this year, A Night of Tarot is perfect for me! Enough about me though, this event will also be perfect for you if you are into tarot! To make things more exciting, we will be joined by author and tarot reader, Melinda Lee Holm! Register to ask Melinda questions and get her books signed during this special night.

Jane Austen Fan Club

Set for its second meeting in October, the Jane Austen Fan Club continues! For the month of October, the club will be reading and discussing Mansfield Park. If you haven’t already, be sure to stop by the information desk to register and pick up your copy.

Do you believe in aliens? We do! For our Festival of Frights Walkthrough this year, we will be visited by some very special friends from out of this world! Maybe keep an eye out for the UFO dropping off our friends the night before the event?

Festival of Frights: Library 51

Saturday, October 25 @ 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM | All Ages

A day long extraterrestrial, fright event for all! Including crafts, activities, giveaways, photo ops, caricatures, our Library 51 Spooky and Non-Spooky Walkthrough Maze featuring friends from out of this world, and other entertainment!The Non-Spooky Maze is available from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and the Spooky Maze is available from 3:00 PM- to 5:30 PM. The Teen SFX Makeup Class runs from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM; registration is required for this class, please call or visit to register.
