It’s been happening quietly - on the subway, at the farmers market, at every dinner where someone shows up in a silk slip top and somehow looks more put-together than the rest of the table. Women aren’t bothering anymore. And the strange part is, they look better for it.

For a long time, going bra-free read as either a statement or an accident. You were either making a point or you’d simply run out of time that morning. There wasn’t much room in between. That gap has closed. The sheer top worn straight. The silk blouse with nothing underneath. The tank that doesn’t apologize for itself. None of it is rebellious anymore, and none of it is careless either. It’s just a cleaner line, chosen on purpose.

That word “chosen” is the whole edit. And it breaks down the same way everything in this newsletter breaks down: Base, Build, then Last Layer.

The Base is the garment itself - the top, the slip, the shirt that’s cut well enough to carry the outfit with nothing underneath. A silk slip needs almost nothing. A fine knit needs smoothing, not lifting. A structured blouse can often go completely bare underneath and be fine, because the fabric itself is doing the work a bra used to do. The base decides how much help you actually need, before you buy anything.

The Build is what goes underneath it, and this is where most people overcorrect. The instinct is to go looking for a bra substitute, something that mimics the shape and support of a real bra, and end up right back where they started, just less comfortable. Don’t build toward a substitute. Build toward what the specific base actually needs.

A few pieces worth knowing for the build:

Fleur du Mal - luxurious, barely-there, built for pieces where the layer underneath is meant to be part of the outfit rather than hidden from it.

Intimissimi - the Italian everyday. Basics that are better made than they have any right to be at that price, and that don’t announce themselves under clothing. I love this balconette I own.

Cakes Body - for the days you want coverage, not shape. Nipple covers done right, smoothing everything out under a satin cami or a knit top without adding anything that looks like a bra. I have these in multiples.

Olakh - a newer Indian label bringing artisanal lingerie to a global audience, built with the same care as the outerwear it sits under. Worth knowing before everyone else does.

The Last Layer is the one piece you add after the base and build are already settled - proof that the outfit was finished on purpose.

For this edit, that’s the Bangle Choker with baguette bar ends, a single clean line at the neck. It’s the one thing your eye catches after it’s already taken in everything else - the sheer top, the bare shoulder, the slip skirt. Modern, architectural, and deliberately quiet about it.

Not a costume-jewelry number, and it’s not meant to be. This is a piece you wear on rotation for a decade, not a piece you match to a season.

For a while, skipping the bra used to be the whole outfit, the thing people noticed first. Now it’s closer to editing than to statement-making - one more decision made in service of a cleaner result.

The Last Layer

Not because I didn’t have clothes. If anything, I had too many. But every morning felt like a small negotiation between versions of myself.

I wanted to feel polished - but not overdressed for school drop-off.
Comfortable - but not invisible.
Put together - but still like me.

And somewhere between the weather, the rushing, the snacks and water bottles and extra sweaters and tiny socks, I realized something:

the problem wasn’t that I needed more outfits.

I needed fewer decisions.

So I stopped building a wardrobe around “looks.” And started building it around anchors. Pieces that could absorb the rest of my life.

Right now, those anchors are a pair of black slacks and a pair of navy pleated shorts. Everything else rotates around them.

And here’s the formula I use to get dressed with them.

The base is the pant — always.

The build is the top, which shifts the mood.

And the last layer is the detail that makes it feel finished: the earring, the bag, the shoe.

You can keep the same base and build and completely change the outfit just by changing what you finish it with. That’s not ten outfits. That’s one system.

Same black slacks. Same fitted turtleneck. That’s it. That’s the whole base and build. Now watch what happens when the last layer changes.

The real point

The goal was never ten outfits.

It was waking up and feeling like myself again.

Not a version of myself performing “put together.”

The older I get, the less interested I am in owning separate wardrobes for separate lives.
