But historians since consider this claim a stunt to draw in more visitors as well as a political statement to lower the spirits of the Welsh who considered Arthur to rise again and come to aid them in their fight for independence.

In a literary context Geoffrey of Monmouth names insula Avallonis in his Historia Regum Britanniae around 1136 as the island where Arthur’s sword was forged and where he is carried to be healed after the battle of Camlan. And in his Vita Merlini, around 1150, Geoffrey describes the same place as the insula pomorum quae fortunata vocatur, the Isle of Apples called Fortunate, ruled by nine sisters, the first of whom is Morgen: healer, shape-shifter, one who can fly.

But this is not a new account of islands inhabited by magical women.

Let’s go back a further eleven hundred years, to the Roman geographer Pomponius Mela, writing his De Chorographia around AD 43. He describes an island called Sena, in the Britannic Sea, off the coast of the Osismi, that is Finistère, the western tip of Brittany.

On it, an oracle of a Gaulish deity, served by nine priestesses called the Gallizenae, who could rouse the sea and the winds with their chanting, turn themselves into whatever animal they chose, heal what elsewhere was incurable, and know and speak the future.

So why is nobody booking flights to Finistère instead of Glastonbury?

There are two problems with placing Glastonbury on an Avalon shaped pedestal:

The first is that it makes you believe the place will do the work for you and magically solve all your problems. It has you place your sovereign power onto a place that as soon as you step out of the coach, you find yourself suddenly inside an abundance portal or meet your prince charming. Or that by visiting its sacred sites you are now officially allowed to call yourself a priestess.

But this fosters illusion rather than genuine initiation and can easily turn into delusion if you fall into the second trap which has you neglect your responsibilities at home, thinking live is better elsewhere, more magical and powerful. When truly your transformation does not automatically happen by resenting your origin but by igniting the magic at home or wherever you are in the world.

Whilst Glastonbury certainly can be considered a portal to Avalon, it is not the only one nor is it a prerequisite to discover its mysteries and integrate its teachings.

The most important thing you can do at this time is find Avalon within and anchor it through your heart-led being in the world. Well then, is Avalon a real place?

It depends entirely which Avalon you mean. Mythology doesn’t acknowledge Avalon as a real place at all but an otherworldly realm.

There is the literary Avalon, invented and reinvented by writers according to their own cultural and societal context over centuries.

There is the political and historical Avalon, presenting us with rational legitimisation but leaving us with more distortion and righteousness.

And there is the spiritual Avalon, which requires devotion, a faith older than Christianity and is more accessible than you think. But it will ask of you to drop the masks you have been conditioned to wear, find the essence under false identities and gather courage to take up the quest that will challenge the life you have lived so far.

So, how can we harness the power of a portal (because Glastonbury genuinely is one) without mistaking it for the only one?

What does it actually mean to be a priestess of Avalon in our contemporary culture, to be one of the nine, to bridge the worlds whilst whilst managing the mundane?

And how can you cross the metaphorical waters to the Sacred Isle from wherever you are in the world?

So I don’t feel like a witch going to be burned at stake anymore, it honestly healed a part within me I didn’t know needed healing, being included in a community without having to hide or change my true self. You can read about the process of going to church and bridging a century old rift here.

But what still lingered was an identity piece. I already felt conflicted to name myself a priestess despite having trained others in the Avalonian Tradition, trained 200+ Ceremonialists and facilitators of sacred spaces, in fact. In the spiritual scene I feel such a cringe to claim a title because it is often used by love-and-light-feminine-flow-business-coaches or self righteous narcissists thriving in a guru role.

Yet I also know me not naming my heart’s calling and the path that has restored my faith in life, in myself, in my sovereign choices and raising humans for the sake of a future I believe in belonging to - feels equally wrong. That would be giving the instagram-reputation of the word priestess too much power, it would mean to deny the millennia of history and weight of the sacred arts of priestesses, my ancestral ties to peace-weavers, seeresses and also those that have caused these ties to be burned and almost forgot. (If you know my writing, you know I am the last to outshine our rather shameful collective roots with those that give me identification with a more desired image. If you have conflicting ancestry, I highly recommend this workshop around exactly this dynamic, so you can move forward with clarity and fuelled purpose).

Back to the point: I struggled answering the question about what it is I am in a work context due to several mixed feelings.

And when I headed to this year’s park fest to pick up my boys from the playground and see old aquantances and say goodbye (for now) to some new friends as we are about to embark on our ext adventures - I found myself slightly worried about introducing myself should someone ask.

I just made my mind up to stand up for what I do and fully claim my devotion and externally express it (rather than just silently be the one in the background, only openly known to my trainees and colleagues). Because I realised that this is exactly the issue most of my students face: They know their calling, they follow it whole-heartedly and then they get stuck claiming it in their hometown, within their family and friend circles or at their “normal” job.

I always been for integration and not needing fancy titles to do the priestess work but recently I realised sometimes this longing for grounded realness and subtle integration can easily become an avoidance of a bigger issue.

That of letting our voice form the words of truth that will send a ripple effect of consequences into motion.

Some of which we fear: rejection, ridicule, judgment. But also the ripples of curiosity, love, connection, intrigue, conversation starters.

When we speak our truth and reveal out vulnerability, we step on a quest that we can’t turn back from. And not once did I want to turn back from mine since this auspicious dream in 2016. But that doesn’t shelter me from ongoing challenges and the subtle layers of subcoscious programming and age old suppression of our gifts.

So, as I finally decided to put my own judgment of people palying dress up whilst not being trained properly in facilitaion, and simply do my best to bring my expertise forward and allow myself to be a priestess even if that would mean others might perceive me as one of the new age trend hoppers that end up reborn christian (I wrote about this pattern here).

But going right into a Christian community with that? Felt conflicting in so many ways.

So I made a decision to surrender. To let fate decide. If I was being asked about my work, I would answer directly without my usually round about way of “teaching online courses and training people to facilitate personal transformation for others”. Or at least I would pause and gather my courage.

And oh the goddess has fabulous humour.

I arrived and immediately saw Neil, our local priest who greeted me with a hug and big smile, pointing to a man in the corner, saying empathetically: “Laura, I want to introduce you to a friend who is also from Germany!”

Everything happened so quick, and it dawned on me that this was exactly the moment I’ve been pondering in my head for several days prior. But I didn’t get a chance to speak as the priest said: “my friend, meet Laura, she is a Priestess of… Avalon?! Did i say that correctly?” With a look to me, he continued “Laura and me have fascinating conversations!”.

And there I was, being led into a chair next to a professor of Christian Theology, who was turning to me with curious openness and an immediate interest and shared passion for Scotland, our dream home.

There, I had it.

The confirmation I was writing about for weeks. That Faith unites, does not separate, does not exclude. That while beliefs might vary, our traditions and stories differ, our values, our humanness, our solution-oriented-faith in the future and hope for peace, brings us together.

I leave you with this and a smile from my heart. As I make my way back to the house that held us for the last year, that I birthed my second son, in only in the presence of my partner and sleeping toddler. The home we leave to make our way down to the spiritual hub that I loathed so much for its lack of wildness, waterfalls and grounded community. Because Glastonbury is where we have family and friends that we long to be closer to whilst our boys are so young.

Knowing we will return to the land that our eldest now calls home, that land that birthed a New Scot, the land that colours my dreams, both day and night. The land that had me unravel my internal conflicts and found me feeling like I belong no matter the label of community I was introduced in.

We are packing boxes and move down south for at least the coming winter, look for a contemporary home close to family. Until, well, until I get yet another of these intuitive inklings, these visions that has us direct our life northwards again. Goddess willing.

Please send me all your waterfall recommendations around Somerset, if you have any, will you? Because Avalon for me is alive most in the presence of water spirits, woodland nymphs and the glistening sunlight through birch trees. And despite moving back to what has been named in 1099 the Ancient Isle of Avalon, I know that Avalon is found within. Because here again, we have a claiming of title, and this one of the Isle of Avalon actually stemming from Christian monks, eager to bring some mythological proof for more pilgrims to visit and money to flow into the area, alongside political propaganda.

So whilst Glastonbury is not my forever home, it is the place my first born was birthed, our family and friends wait for us and the living memory of my faith practiced out in the open. Time for me to take my place there without the cringe, without the resistance, without the judgment this time.

I will write to you from there in the coming week with a special article I planned for a while, about what Avalon truly is and means. From a mythological, historical, political and spiritual lens.

My pet peeve is people going on about their problems without doing anything about it. I don’t (choose to) have capacity for someone playing the blame game. While I do have much compassion and patience for the subconscious pattern of self-sabotage. Which is why I write on mythopoetic alchemy, personal development and facilitation within the spiritual scene, and reclaiming responsibility when it comes to actively choosing our dreams as a roadmap to fulfil our destiny.

If you don’t actively choose your dreams, you forfeit the destined life you are meant to live.

This is not only a hill I’ll die on but also the belief I tend to every day and a core value every one of my students and readers and ceremony participants have or learn to develop. Because if transformation and self-ownership, purpose and actively living your calling (instead of living in the idea and dreaming stage without integrating it into your mundane life) are not something you truly want, you will either get triggered by my work or simply not get anything out of it. As I can’t heal or change you, only you can. But I know from my own experiences and a decade within teaching work that once you decide you are not only responsible for your destiny but also able to co-create your life, my work will land in the most powerful way.

I will help you to discern between your conditioning, your wants and needs, your calling versus your dependency on external validation, and your intuition and deep-rooted belonging to source wisdom and divine nature versus your voice of fear, ego and identity attachment.

Over the years I had to unravel the balance between surrender and control.

Self-responsibility and conscious action are crucial yet can quickly end up in control: trying to predict an outcome, prevent risks, control oneself through endless healing or others in order to deflect from one’s own emotional experience.

And surrender can become a way to spiritually bypass the reality you are meant to embrace and has you avoid making tricky decisions that you fear the consequences of. You notice this when people rely on “flow” only when things are easy but the actual flow arrives after facing the challenging times and devote to discipline.

Control vs surrender to me really is the differentiation between fate and destiny, faith and belief. I go into it in detail here, so you can examine these dynamics in your own life.

I personally nearly died from a mystery disease when I was 13 and lived with medication for a decade after, having developed a deeply philosophical and aware mind but a numb connection to my body, to the degree that I never thought I would be able to “listen” to it. Outright doubting any of my internal signs and putting my trust and life direction completely into the hands of professionals, authority figures and (fortunately also) life and its possibility. Because there was still one thing intact and that was a strong sense of courage and heart-led living, something that was always with me but most likely enhanced through my second chance in life.

There was no part of me that wanted to bypass the human experience, I didn’t close my heart off and was not interested in escaping through substances. When I eventually was able to engage in plant ceremonies, I would always intentionally partake in the experiences in order to bring me deeper into life, closer to my internal truth and to help me see blind spots in my thinking and behaviour that had me avoid my responsibility or ways to live my life.

But because of my open heart and a belonging wound that is rooted even in ancestral trauma and possible past lives, I developed an anxious attached dynamic in relationship, constantly seeking love and external safety and acknowledgement. Instead of asking what I truly wanted I excused my lack of boundaries and avoidance of rejection with a dedication to compromises, finding only good in any man instead of acknowledging incompatibilities. Because I’d rather be with someone than alone.

This to me now (a mother of so far two, with an incredible partner who is the best thing that ever happened to me and a relationship that only blossomed because I had to face my strongest fears and did what I never dared before, but that’s a story for another post) is a sign of initiation into true leadership. Because if you are anxiously attached or have been, your default is to think about others, love others, bend your life around others. This, of course, is as much of an unhealthy long-term dynamic as it is to be anxiously avoidant, but once you have mastered your awareness and shifted your default to return to yourself and tend to community from that space rather than from a space of running away from yourself, and face the fears of exile and rejection and can hold yourself through it, you will never lose the ability of still thinking about and even for others. You simply stop acting on it and put the responsibility back to those that should wield it in the first place. When you reclaim your sovereignty and remember that you are the one you have been looking for, you will inevitably reflect that back and pass on the torch. This is the sacred leadership I practise and train facilitators and ceremonialists in. The wolf pack leader who walks behind to ensure everyone is arriving together, rather than an ego-driven need for performance and displaying dominance to portray power and defend one’s position.

I am an initiated and public priestess of Avalon, studied in a lineage of Celtic scholarship and something I call sovereignty-faith, a faith in the goddess of life, creation and mythopoetic meaning-making that constantly reflects your own choices and self-ownership back to us instead of dictating the exact steps, because they are unique to every person, context and life circumstance. What my path of Avalon gives me is core values and guidelines that inform my everyday reality. Healing, Death and Rebirth, the constant cycle of life, is not only honoured but practised, ritualised and made visible even if our contemporary society tries everything to neglect or distort them. Just as healing has become outsourced to institutions and professionals who claim authority over our bodies, or death is kept equally feared and suppressed. So too is rebirth, by the lack of initiation rites and threshold crossings.

Avalon also provides me with the solution, which, simple as it is, will still vary in degrees of ease and challenge. It is reciprocity and respect, conflict resolution, magic and learning, and restoring the sacred through joy and courageous quests.

So as fantastical and performative as it might sound to name oneself a priestess, I am here to remind you that this awe coupled with cringe at claiming the term stems from millennia of suppression of feminine leadership and of women in oracular, prophetic and politically negotiating positions.

Our first impression is that of the intangible and mystical and the unmeasurable qualities of ceremonies and magic rituals, but truly being a priestess is being a bridge between the sacred and mundane, and that can have a different expression for each priestess. Mine is educating, training and helping people find meaning and belonging in their life by integrating the spiritual lessons and insights and visions from their heart into the way they show up in their life, relate to their family and community and resolve conflict within and without, for a world we no longer feel the need to dissociate or escape from but truly thrive in.

I studied the Arthurian myths before they became the foundation of my spiritual lineage and re-membrance of my indigenous Western roots. Yes, we have those! As much as we are descended from the colonisers and witch hunters and are children of the patriarchy and capitalism, we also have an inheritance of indigenous spirituality and the well maidens and humans living in harmony with the otherworld.

In the recent decades the term witch was reclaimed and a lot of work surfaced around the witch wound, a term coined by - a very important part of our journey as it helped us understand why we are often shying away from our innate gifts and feel a deep calling to the sacred, the mystery and magic. But if it is not embedded into also acknowledging the internalised dynamic of thousands of years of suppression and domination we will still run into the same patterns and lead our life through a conditioned way of thinking and being.

And whilst the identification with the witches as victims and light workers as heroes is glamourised in spiritual circles, it still lives within us in a compartmentalised dynamic of splitting ourselves off from our wholeness. Because through idealising, we ended up hiding the more shameful parts of ourselves or our conflicting ancestry and cultural conditioning. Whilst descending further and further into a self-help spiral and digging ourselves a subconscious grave that has us loop further away from our power instead of rooting into it.

This shows up in the spiritual scene as bypassing responsibility, performing rituals in order to feel special or claiming titles to prove worth. It still keeps us in looking for external recognition and the need to be seen as “more evolved” all the while we are sold endless healing and being forever “in process”. Aesthetic spirituality, curated altars, borrowed prayers all missing the point of the true return to Self and one’s essence. Rituals and ceremonies are a foundation for more connection not a nice wellness add on. But because they have been treated like that, more and more people abandon the practices that initially brought them so much joy and opened the portal to their calling.

A big contributing factor is that people are trained in modalities that leave out the de-conditioning work and faith and sovereignty work. So modalities simply become yet another thing to do instead of the transformative practices they are. When we just offer a ceremony or breathwork session (or whatever practice) without integrating the teachings and help people realise the responsibility they have to actively change their life after or between sessions, we end up with a perpetual cycle.

Which looks a bit like everyone wafting around a sage stick, feeling super spiritual and open minded (and maybe a bit more in tune with energy) but still work in the job that has them burn out, stay in relationships that keep their attachment wounds open, and having new language for their problems without working on a solution and new way forward.

The surface changes but underlying dynamics and patterns are still the same. Parties get exchanged for ecstatic dances and girl’s night out for women’s circle but it doesn’t change the world if we don’t address the foundation on which it was built and the illusion of security it still keeps us in.

If your spiritual practice doesn’t touch the ordinary way of relating with your loved ones and neighbours, does not inform your way of navigating conflict in the world and does not ignite change nor hold yourself through the emotional upheaval that change brings, you are not facilitating transformation but the idea of it.

The idea of ascending was never one I liked, the masculine linear striving for heaven, away from the “sinful” and dirty earth, into meticulously pastel-coloured aesthetics or pristine golden solar powers or god. But only descending without expanding won’t serve the earth either. Not if it is done without accountability and community witnessing of rebirth. Hence why the path to Avalon is so important for our times right now. It is not an island to escape to in order to avoid your mundane life. It can well be a healing island that you retreat to for a time, but it will ask you to emerge reborn, with an old identity or conditioning that has died as you find your footing on the shores of your inner court and sovereign rulership in your life.

The still traceable motifs in the Arthurian legends, Welsh and Irish and Scottish myths and also European folklore point to a creation story that speaks of a much older goddess tradition.

We are living through an epidemic of dissociation, and much of the spiritual world has become a symptom of it. Of course at the core it offers the cure but only when integrated. Our calling has to be kindled after the first spark dies down instead of abandoned because it now requires true devotion. The embers are still glowing.

Don’t fall into the trap of escaping. Often the spiritual calling was a way to further dissociate from reality when truly it is meant to help you change your life, enchant the filter of reality, deprogram from the illusion that had you needing escaping in the first place. By hopping to the next ebst shiny thing or big promise you will repeat that cycle.

This is why this publication exists. Myth is not escapism. Spirituality requires you to deepen your faith, practice trust and return to our sovereign life choices. It is the most practical technology I know for psychological and spiritual transformation. The fairytale is not a distraction from your life, it is a seed of your becoming. Your fantasies and dreams are signposts of the true essence you are here to embody and let life reflect back to you.

And the point of all of it, every ceremony and every archetype and every etymology I will ever trace for you, will not only leave this world more enchanted and help you to truly change your day-to-day to a life you love living; it will also support us to build a world we no longer feel the need to dissociate or escape from, but one we can actually thrive in.

That is what “back to the future” means to me.

The return to myth, to Avalon, to the matrifocal traditions and partnership societies of our ancestors, not as nostalgia nor regression. We do not go back to romanticise a lost golden age or the matriarchy as solution for every problem we have or to pretend we can return to it unchanged. Our DNA, our culture, our history have irrevocably altered us, and I would not undo that even if I could. Because that is how deep my faith in nature (which means also US as part of nature) is, I believe this evolution and the times we live in all serve the purpose for change and possibilities of a more harmonious world. We go back to re-member. To gather the threads that were cut and weave them forward into something that can hold a modern, culturally mingled life. The old wisdom as material to relate to and make meaning with, not as museum.

This is why mysticism, magic and myth truly bring us back to reality.

They help us see through the illusion of a conditioned society that has strayed from the right path and is now finding itself deep in the woods, like the descendants of the well maidens and their assaulters in the Elucidation, only having themselves to find their purpose and belonging.

So if you found your way here, know that I welcome you on this quest for you to find your way through the dark, learning all the lessons in order to emerge expanded, matured and anchored in your heart’s calling.

Don’t forget that the times of resistance, of heartache, of despair are truly the times of the Great Mystery making itself tangible in order for us to integrate our calling and create from our human nature.

I open with storytelling, guiding you into The Elucidation, a medieval poem that predates the Grail cycle and, to me, holds the clearest map I have found for the times we are living through right now.

From there we go into the witch-perpetrator wound: Not what was done to our line, which we have grieved rightly. But what was done by our line, and is still moving through us.

Then the drama triangle, and how to step out of it.

I take you through each point (victim, hero, perpetrator) and how to move into their matured versions: creator, witness and initiator. So that when the contraction, the flinch, or the shame arrives, you have recognition instead of reaction.

We come into presence with the four elements, and I guide you through an ancestral witnessing ritual, held in a safely contained space, where you witness with compassion. Nothing you are not trained for is asked of you.

Then the emotional alchemy.

I lead you through each of the emotions that surface in this work and how to transmute them into fuel: shame into reconnection and belonging, grief into expression, anger into purpose, fear into courage, and guilt into ownership and sovereignty.

So none of it stays stuck in the body, and all of it becomes usable for what you are actually here to do.

It’s performance at best but dissociation at worst.

All coming from an internalised missionary or colonising dynamic that is playing out subconsciously. Most people are not aware of it, hence why I write about it, share it in my ceremonies and train my students accordingly.

When we were severed from our ancestral spiritual lineages and forced to adopt an Abrahamic faith from a completely different environmental origin, healers got accused of witchcraft and sovereign individuals with property were killed, women with prophetic and oracular power who used to be revered as priestesses, seeresses and crucial strategists in battle and peace-bringers were made dependent on men…

War went on and slowly, over centuries, our bodies lost connection with the land, nature became labelled as something outside of us and our reality got shaped primarily by our mind.

We can be aware of all this, rationally comprehend it, but nothing will change within the mental state only. What made you sick won’t heal you. You need to bridge back to feeling and embodied states, to intuition, connection, the interdependency of all that is alive and dead. Yes, also the dead leave an imprint.

We mostly know this nowadays through the idea of the witch wound. Something I believe we all carry collectively, no matter if we remember a past life as a witch or have ancestral mothers who were midwives or magic women.

But, what I hear no one talk about is the other lineage we also descend from: the ones who judged, sold out and killed the witches. We are readily associating ourselves with the heroes and martyrs - and more profoundly with the victims - but ignore the perpetrator within ourselves.

You might have heard about the drama triangle (I give a bit of a jokingly framed but nonetheless very real and practical example of it here).

But as long as we identify with one (or even all!) of the three parts, we won’t be able to move forward or integrate properly.

We will stay stuck in a repeating cycle.

What is required of us is to step out of the drama triangle completely and stop telling ourselves stories that support the old narrative of our identity.

In order to do this you must recognise where your usual identification lies and how your confirmation bias tries to keep you stuck there.

Then it is about becoming aware of the other parts within yourself and integrating those with compassion and responsibility to respond differently to life, from a place of creator consciousness and a more fully reclaimed self.

Easier said than done but nevertheless doable. It’s an ongoing practice however and we all need our loved ones and community to point out our blindspots, because we all have them.

I noticed how the idea of being privileged as a white westerner holds back many women from not only stepping into sovereignty and following their dreams but also putting them off the exact calling that was meant to bring them and their communities change, courage and profound healing.

And hey, I am not negating external privilege, I simply want to shift the attention to the internal starvation that has you operate like a machine, following the tracks laid out for you instead of carving your own path.

Easy for the dominating systems that have you hold back because you think your are privileged or doesn’t want to be perceived as culturally appropritating or perpetuating a colonised spirituality.

When truly all these are clever ways that keep the conditioned dynamic at play without changing the world for the better. It actually just keeps us suck, small and disconnected not only from our dreams, but other cultures, underlying true faith, kindness, community and like minded souls.

I don’t call that privileged at all. I call that abused, exploited.

Just in an internal way that has become a pattern without even needing anyone else to keep it going. You do it to yourself, already expecting the blame and being called out as someone doing something wrong (doesn’t even matter anymore what, I know you’ll always find an excuse why you can’t do what you want to).

That doesn’t take away from others being externally exploited, it’s almost proof. As within so without!

So I want to propose the idea that you calling yourself privileged might actually be a way to deflect the responsibility you have to reclaim your sovereignty.

So how about we move beyond that narrative and finally co-create a world that we would like to see beyond the labels we give ourselves in the present?

I will introduce you to a Celtic/European creation myth rooted in reciprocity and sovereignty that has predicted the times we are living in right now and gives us a clear map forward. (Because I haven’t even touched on in this email about the spiritual lineage we as “white westerners” have even though we have been intentionally severed from it for so long).

Together we will name how it lives in our bodies right now: the confirmation bias, the silent competition with other women, the inheritance of internalised dynamics that keep you still under a plateau and how you can finally rise above it.

We are moving out of the beautiful house we waited so long to settle in. Out of our own choice and in absolute clarity of why but this does not mean it being an easy decision, far from it.

So as I am moving through all this, and literally preparing a move, including packing boxes and trying to navigate my children, my work, my relationship and my Self, it seems I lost found myself in exhaustion that has me struggle to put energy towards speaking about my offers.

And it is natural in so many ways, as of course when we are between identities and within big processes it is hard to present the work that is so intimately and beautifully woven with our own spiritual and human life in a way that is clear. Because life is nuanced and does not always fit into the business narrative that we as entrepreneurs are told to perform. And those of you who know me as a facilitator and writer, know that I never tried to perform for the sake of genuine integrity.
