Think about how much of your actual life is spent in that dress you bought for your mate's 40th. An evening. Maybe six hours if you include getting ready and the taxi home. Now think about how much of your life is spent in the school run outfit. The supermarket outfit. The "just popping to the cafe" outfit. The working from home outfit that somehow became the working from home, cooking dinner, and falling asleep on the sofa outfit.

That is the version of you the world actually sees. Not the Saturday night version. Not the wedding version. The Tuesday afternoon version.

And yet most of us treat casual clothes like they don't count. Like style only kicks in when there's a reservation or a dress code. We'll spend £80 on a top we wear once and then rotate the same three pairs of leggings for months, wondering why we feel a bit rubbish every time we catch our reflection in a shop window.

Here's what I've learned after two decades in this industry: confidence doesn't come from the occasional outfit that makes you feel incredible for one night. It comes from the daily baseline. The thing you throw on without thinking. If that thing makes you feel like you've given up, you carry that energy into every room you walk into. And if it makes you feel like yourself, like the version of yourself you actually like, that changes everything. Not just how you look. How you move. How you talk to people. How you stand in a queue at Tesco without pulling your coat closed.

The good news is that fixing it doesn't require a budget, a clear out, or a Pinterest board full of outfits you'll never recreate. It just requires thinking about your everyday clothes with the same intention you give the special occasion stuff.

When I made my first reel about this, the response genuinely floored me. Thousands of women saying the same thing: "I didn't realise how much my casual clothes were dragging my confidence down until you pointed it out." And the reason it resonated wasn't because I was showing people expensive alternatives. It was because every single swap was the same price bracket, the same comfort level, just a different choice.

That's the bit people miss. This isn't about spending more. It's about choosing differently.

Take the gym leggings situation. I will die on this hill. Gym leggings are for the gym. For everything else, a wide leg jersey trouser gives you the exact same stretch and softness but tells a completely different story. You're not sacrificing comfort. You're just choosing the version of comfort that doesn't look like you're about to do a 5K. And the moment you make that swap, everything you put on top suddenly looks more intentional, because the foundation changed.

It's the same principle with the giant oversized tee that's become a uniform for half the women I know. I love a graphic tee. But when it's hanging off you with no shape, it's not giving cool. It's giving laundry day. A boxy cropped tee or a knit polo does the same relaxed thing but gives your body somewhere to exist inside the outfit. You still look casual. You just look like you meant it.

People assume that because you work in fashion you’re surrounded by beautiful clothes and glamorous people, so you must feel amazing about yourself. The reality was quite the opposite.

I started my career in the late 90s, when “fashionable” was basically synonymous with being as thin as possible. Sample sizes were tiny, conversations about calories happened over lunch, and there was this underlying feeling that if you wanted to succeed, you needed to look a certain way.

Looking back now, it was completely unhealthy, but at the time it just felt… normal.

And if I’m honest, I feel like we’re edging back towards it.

I’m seeing more body checking, more obsession with being tiny, more people openly talking about weight-loss injections and “getting skinny” as though we’ve learnt nothing from the last twenty years.

This isn’t about judging anyone’s decisions. What someone chooses to do with their own body is entirely up to them.

But I do think we need to be careful about the message we’re sending, especially to younger women.

Because here’s what I’ve learnt…

I’ve been different sizes throughout my life, and being smaller never magically made me confident.

Confidence came from changing how I thought about myself, not how much I weighed.

These are the five things that genuinely made the biggest difference.

1. I stopped dressing for the body I hoped I’d have.

I think this is something so many women do.

You buy the jeans that are a size too small because they’ll fit “once I’ve lost a few pounds.” You leave your favourite dress hanging in the wardrobe because you’re saving it for a holiday, or Christmas, or when you’ve dropped a dress size.

I did it for years.

Now I buy clothes that fit me today.

Not the version of me I might be in six months’ time.

And honestly? I look better because of it.

Clothes that skim your body properly, fit your shoulders, sit on your waist in the right place and don’t dig in will always make you look more put together than forcing yourself into something because you like the number on the label.

Try this: Go through your wardrobe and be honest. If something makes you feel rubbish every single time you put it on, ask yourself why you’re keeping it. If it’s only there for your “future body”, it’s probably time to let it go. Fill your wardrobe with clothes that make getting dressed feel easy, not like a daily reminder that you need to change.

I’ve always been a bit of a perfume girl, but this week I’ve completely fallen for the new M&S Studio Fragrance Collection.

I can absolutely understand why Dark Vanilla keeps flying off the shelves. It smells far more luxurious than its price tag suggests. Warm, creamy and just the right amount of sweet without being overpowering. It’s the kind of scent that lingers beautifully and somehow feels perfect for a warm summer evening.

The whole Studio collection feels like Marks & Spencer has really raised the bar. Modern, sophisticated fragrances that smell genuinely high-end, but without the three-figure price tag.

If you’re looking for a new perfume, I’d start there.

Come summer, my romantic boho side comes out in full force.

H&M has absolutely nailed its latest collection. It’s giving serious Chloé energy with a little Zimmermann thrown in for good measure, and I genuinely don’t think they’ve looked this good in years.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll spend all winter looking like you’ve been stored in a cupboard. Underneath my summer dresses, I’m honestly as blue as a Smurf.

But somewhere in my forties, my priorities shifted. Years ago, I’d have chased a tan. Now, I’m much more interested in looking after my skin because SPF really is your BFF.

One product I’ve been reaching for every morning is the Allies of Skin Sunless Tan SPF 50 Daily Self-Tanner. It gives me SPF 50 protection while gradually building a really natural-looking glow, so I don’t have to choose between protecting my skin and looking a little less… translucent.

What really sold it to me is that it’s packed with vitamin C too. Alongside protecting your skin from UV rays, vitamin C helps brighten dullness, supports collagen production and gives your skin that healthy, fresh look that becomes even more important as we head into our forties.

What I’m Watching

Our television has basically become a sports channel.

We’ve gone from Wimbledon straight into football and I’m completely hooked.

The World Cup has been gripping from start to finish and the fact England have made it through to this week’s semi-final has me completely invested. I genuinely hold my breath for the last ten minutes of every game.

Of course I’m cheering England on, but there’s also a tiny part of me rooting for Spain. Being 20% Spanish, I’ve fully embraced my Mediterranean alter ego this summer. In my head, I’m living somewhere with linen dresses, late dinners and a glass of Rioja in my hand.

And can we just talk about Wonderwall?

Every England win seems to end with Oasis ringing around the stadium and I absolutely love it. Whether it’s because the reunion has had us all in a chokehold or it’s just become the soundtrack to this tournament, there’s something wonderfully nostalgic about hearing thousands of people singing it together.

Come on England…

“I need a whole new summer wardrobe.”

I’ve thought it too.

The weather changes, Instagram fills up with “must-have” summer edits, and suddenly the linen trousers you loved last year don’t feel quite right anymore. Apparently there’s a new colour we should all be wearing. A new sandal. A new bag. A new aesthetic.

Before you know it, you’re halfway through an online basket wondering how on earth you got there.

But after 20 years working in fashion, I don’t actually think most of us need a whole new wardrobe every summer.

I think we’ve just been shopping in the wrong way.

For twenty years, fashion was my career. As a buyer, my job was literally to predict what women would want to wear before they knew it themselves. I loved every minute of it. Looking at the catwalks, spotting emerging trends, analysing colour, fabric and shape… it never stopped fascinating me.

But alongside all of that, I noticed something.

The women whose style I always admired weren’t the ones wearing every new trend.

In fact, they were often wearing the same sort of things year after year.

Not exactly the same outfit, obviously.

But the same feeling.

The same colours. The same shapes.

The same fabrics.

They weren’t constantly reinventing themselves.

They were just becoming a better version of themselves.

I’ve been thinking about this for years, and I think I’ve finally found the words for it.

I call it your Style DNA.

I’ll admit it, I was sceptical. Tallow skincare has been everywhere recently and, like most things that explode on social media, I assumed it was another trend that would disappear as quickly as it arrived.

It didn’t.

I’ve been using the whipped tallow balm from Balmy Cow, and my skin has absolutely loved it.

If you’re perimenopausal, you’ll know your skin suddenly starts playing by completely different rules. Mine has become drier, more sensitive and somehow dehydrated all at the same time. Because tallow has a fatty acid profile that’s remarkably similar to our skin’s own natural oils, it helps support your skin barrier rather than stripping it away.

The result? My skin feels calmer, softer and far less thirsty.

It’s become one of those products that I genuinely look forward to putting on every evening.

What I’m Wearing

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know I don’t believe you need a whole new wardrobe every season. Nine times out of ten, it’s the accessories that make an outfit feel current and give it contrast.

My latest obsession is parfois.

The Portuguese brand started with a single accessories shop in Porto back in 1994 and has quietly become one of those hidden gems I always check before looking anywhere else.

My Style DNA always leans a little more romantic and bohemian during summer, and Parfois just gets it. Think colourful tassel earrings, woven bags, raffia textures, fringe detailing and all those finishing touches that make a simple linen dress feel intentional rather than just thrown on.

If you’re trying to inject a little personality into your summer wardrobe without buying loads of new clothes, I’d start there.

What I’m Watching

I’m always drawn to anything set in 1960s or 70s Britain. There’s something about the music, the tailoring, the old pubs and London streets that instantly transports me somewhere familiar.

This week, that’s been Legends.

It reminds me of the stories my dad used to tell, and there’s something incredibly comforting about escaping into another era for an hour.

Not every recommendation has to change your life. Sometimes you just need something brilliantly made that lets you switch off for an evening.

This was that for me.

I was lucky enough to get hold of the recipe, so naturally we’ve been making them on repeat at home ever since. And dare I say it… they’re pretty close to the real thing.

If you’re having friends over, fancy a Friday night cocktail, or just want to feel like you’re sat on the French Riviera for an hour, this one’s for you.

You’ll need:

• 50ml premium vodka

• 100g very ripe Campari tomatoes (or the sweetest vine tomatoes you can get your hands on)

• 10ml white balsamic vinegar

• 5ml simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water)

• A pinch of flaky sea salt

• Freshly cracked black pepper

• Ice

To garnish:

• 1 cherry tomato

• A little salt and pepper for dipping

Method

Chop your tomatoes into quarters and throw them into a cocktail shaker. Give them a really good muddle—you want to get as much of that beautiful tomato juice out as possible.

Add the vodka, white balsamic, simple syrup, a pinch of flaky sea salt and a good crack of black pepper.

Fill the shaker with ice and shake it like you mean it for around 20 seconds. The colder, the better.

Double strain into a chilled martini glass so it’s lovely and smooth with none of the tomato bits.

Finish with another twist of black pepper over the top.

If you’re feeling fancy, dip a cherry tomato into a little salt and pepper and pop it on the side of the glass.

My little tip: If you want to get even closer to the LPM version, add one tiny drop of really good extra virgin olive oil before you shake it. It sounds a bit rogue, but it gives the cocktail this incredible silky, almost savoury finish that just works.

It came from one of the most respected fashion editors I worked with during my years in the industry.

She said, “The most stylish person in the room is the one who looks effortlessly stylish off duty.”

That sentence has stayed with me ever since.

Because after years working in fashion, surrounded by impeccably dressed editors, stylists and creatives, I realised something. The women whose style I admired most weren’t saving their best outfits for events or fashion week. They looked just as good grabbing a coffee, running errands or dashing across London between meetings as they did sitting front row.

Not because they had bigger wardrobes, it was because they understood how to make everyday dressing feel intentional.

Ironically, that’s the hardest type of dressing.

These days, my life looks very different.

I’m no longer racing between fashion appointments. I’m juggling work around two children, remembering who’s got PE, trying to get everyone out of the house on time, carrying approximately six bags at once and wondering whether I’ve remembered to take something out of the freezer for dinner, this is my real life.

And if I’m not careful, I’m just as guilty as anyone else of falling into the grab-and-go trap.

The old tracksuit. The gym leggings (despite having absolutely no intention of stepping foot in a gym).

The oversized T-shirt that’s seen better days.

Because when life gets busy, style is usually the first thing to disappear. You tell yourself you’ll get changed later, but let’s be honest… you won’t.

Before you know it, you’ve spent another day not quite feeling like yourself.

And I don’t think that’s because you’re wearing the “wrong” clothes. I think it’s because when we stop making an effort with how we dress, we stop feeling like ourselves too.

Somewhere along the line we’ve convinced ourselves that comfort and style can’t exist in the same outfit. I completely disagree.

In fact, I think sportswear has a lot to answer for.

We’ve normalised dressing as though we’re permanently on our way to Pilates, when actually most of us are on our way to Tesco, a coffee shop, the school gates or a lunch meeting.

I’ve worked in fashion long enough to know this:

-Style isn’t about having somewhere special to go. It’s about deciding that your ordinary days deserve the same attention as the exciting ones.

Because, let’s face it, most of life happens in the ordinary.

So if you feel good in what you’re wearing on a random Tuesday, you’ll feel good far more often than if you’re saving your favourite version of yourself for special occasions.

Looking stylish doesn’t mean dressing up.

It doesn’t mean buying a whole new wardrobe.

It certainly doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort.

It simply means making a few better decisions.

Five extra minutes in front of the mirror can completely change how you feel for the rest of the day.

These are the upgrades I come back to time and time again.

1. Throw on a blazer, cropped jacket or trench.

I know exactly what you’re thinking.

“But it’s too hot.”

Fine. Don’t wear it. Carry it. Throw it over your shoulders. Tie it around your waist.

I honestly can’t tell you how many times I’ve grabbed a linen blazer as I’m leaving the house because I know it’ll pull everything together. Half the time I’m not even wearing it—it’s just coming with me because I know I’ll be glad I brought it.

A blazer, cropped jacket or lightweight trench instantly gives an outfit structure. It balances out softer pieces and gives even denim shorts or a cotton dress that effortless “she’s got great style” feeling.

I love that contrast of something masculine over something feminine. It’s one of the easiest styling tricks you’ll ever use. A neutral blazer or soft black linen blazer are timeless classic pieces that won’t date and I’d start here.
