Mục tiêu của bài viết không phải để thay thế video gốc, mà để giúp những ai chưa có điều kiện theo dõi toàn bộ nội dung bằng tiếng Anh vẫn có thể tiếp cận những kiến thức về thiết kế cần ghi nhớ.

Design không chỉ là thứ bạn nhìn thấy

Khi nói đến Design, có lẽ bạn sẽ nghĩ đến những hoa văn trên tường, những bức vẽ trong sách nghệ thuật, một logo, một chiếc ghế, hay một thứ gì đó được tạo ra để trông thật đẹp. Nhưng đó chỉ là một góc rất nhỏ của Design.

Design là hành động biến sự hỗn loạn thành một trật tự có mục đích. Và tất cả chúng ta đều đang làm điều đó.

• Một đứa trẻ thiết kế một lối đi tắt để với tới cái kệ.

• Một đầu bếp thiết kế thứ tự chuẩn bị món ăn.

• Một lập trình viên thiết kế luồng thông tin.

Khoa học có thể cho chúng ta biết điện hoạt động như thế nào. Nhưng Design là thứ sắp xếp hàng tỷ công tắc siêu nhỏ bên trong một con chip, khiến chúng hoạt động cùng nhau thay vì biến thành một khối silicon vô dụng.

Design là thứ sử dụng khí động học để biến kim loại, nhiên liệu, dây điện và toán học thành một chiếc máy bay có thể chở hàng trăm người bay trên bầu trời.

Design bắt đầu trước khi Object xuất hiện

Hãy tưởng tượng bạn đang đói.

Trước mặt bạn có:

• Rau

• Dầu

• Gia vị

• Nhiệt

• Dụng cụ nấu ăn

• 30 phút thời gian

Không thứ nào trong số đó tự nó là một bữa ăn.

Chúng chỉ trở thành một bữa ăn khi có người quyết định:

• Cái gì xảy ra trước?

• Cái gì xảy ra tiếp theo?

• Nguyên liệu nào kết hợp với nhau?

• Nguyên liệu nào phải được giữ riêng?

Cách chúng được sắp xếp chính là Design.

Bây giờ hãy thay:

• Rau → con người

• Nhà bếp → công ty

• Công thức nấu ăn → workflow

Nguyên tắc gần như vẫn hoàn toàn giống nhau.

Nhà kinh tế học và nhà khoa học nhận thức Herbert Simon từng đưa ra một trong những định nghĩa rộng nhất về Design.

Điều đó có nghĩa là: Design bắt đầu từ sự không hài lòng.

Một thứ đang tồn tại, nhưng bạn muốn nó tồn tại theo một cách khác.

Bạn đang ở dưới mặt đất, nhưng muốn lên mái nhà.

Thông tin ở khắp mọi nơi, nhưng sự hiểu biết thì không.

Con người đang ở những nơi khác nhau, nhưng họ vẫn phải phối hợp để hành động cùng nhau.

Âm thanh hỗn loạn ở khắp nơi, cho đến khi ai đó sắp xếp chúng thành âm nhạc.

Khoảng cách giữa “cái đang có” và “cái bạn muốn có” chính là Design Problem.

Design xảy ra liên tục, thường là chúng ta không nhận ra.

• Lên kế hoạch buổi sáng → Design một sequence

• Viết lại một câu → Design information

• Bố trí cửa hàng → Design movement

• Dàn dựng một cảnh phim → Design curiosity

Nguyên tắc luôn giống nhau: Goal + Limited Resources + Constraints. Và bạn phải sắp xếp những gì mình có để biến kết quả mong muốn thành khả thi.

Đó là lý do Constraints (những giới hạn/ràng buộc) rất quan trọng.

Ví dụ, nói: “Hãy xây một cây cầu.” thì chưa có nhiều ý nghĩa.

Bạn cần biết:

• Cầu dài bao nhiêu?

• Chịu được trọng lượng bao nhiêu?

• Chi phí bao nhiêu?

• Dùng vật liệu gì?

• Nền đất thế nào?

• Gió mạnh đến đâu?

• Những điểm nào có thể xảy ra sự cố?

Nếu không có Constraints, bạn chưa thực sự có một Design Problem. Bạn chỉ có một ý tưởng.

Cleverness (sự thông minh, khéo léo) chính là cách chúng ta tìm đường đi vòng qua những giới hạn đó.

Sự khéo léo sinh ra từ Constraint

Nhiều người thường nghĩ Engineering là những phép toán phức tạp.

Đúng, Engineering sử dụng rất nhiều toán học.

Nhưng Engineering không đơn giản là tính ra một đáp án đúng.

Trong thực tế, thường không tồn tại một đáp án hoàn hảo duy nhất.

Ví dụ:

• Máy bay chắc chắn hơn → có thể nặng hơn

• Pin nhẹ hơn → có thể chứa ít năng lượng hơn

• Tòa nhà an toàn hơn → có thể đắt hơn

NASA mô tả Systems Engineering như một nghệ thuật và khoa học của việc tạo ra một hệ thống có thể vận hành được, trong khi phải cân bằng những yêu cầu thường mâu thuẫn với nhau.

Các chuyên gia khác nhau cũng phải được cân bằng để một bộ phận của hệ thống không vô tình phá hỏng những bộ phận còn lại.

Đó chính là Design.

Và đôi khi, giải pháp thông minh nhất lại là: Loại bỏ những thứ không quan trọng.

Hãy nhìn vào bản đồ London Underground.

Một bản đồ địa lý chính xác của London sẽ cho bạn:

• Khoảng cách thật

• Đường cong thật

• Hướng đi thật của các tuyến tàu

Nghe có vẻ hữu ích. Nhưng với một hành khách đi tàu điện ngầm, phần lớn sự chính xác đó không quan trọng. Bạn không cần biết đường hầm thực tế cong bao nhiêu.

Bạn cần biết:

• Vào ở đâu?

• Đổi tuyến ở đâu?

• Còn bao nhiêu ga nữa đến điểm đích?

Năm 1931, Harry Beck tạo ra một bản đồ dạng sơ đồ, đơn giản hóa yếu tố địa lý và nhấn mạnh connections (sự kết nối).

• Các tuyến được làm thành những góc đều đặn.

• Các ga được phân bố nhất quán hơn.

Kết quả: Mạng lưới trở nên dễ đọc hơn.

Thiết kế này ban đầu khá khác thường, nhưng sau đó trở thành mô hình kinh điển cho bản đồ giao thông trên toàn thế giới.

Điều thú vị là: Beck làm bản đồ tốt hơn bằng cách làm nó kém chính xác về mặt địa lý.

Bởi vì ông hiểu rằng: Accuracy ≠ Usefulness. Chính xác không phải lúc nào cũng đồng nghĩa với hữu ích.

Một thiết kế tốt không cho bạn thấy mọi thứ. Nó cho bạn thấy:

Những gì quan trọng đối với nhiệm vụ đang thực hiện.

Từ bản đồ tàu điện đến CPU

Nguyên tắc này được đẩy lên một quy mô khó tưởng tượng trong các con chip máy tính.

Intel 4004, ra mắt năm 1971, có khoảng 2.300 transistor trên một bộ vi xử lý.

Những transistor đó được tổ chức thành:

• Registers

• Control Logic

• Arithmetic Unit

• Các đường truyền dữ liệu

Ngày nay, những bộ xử lý tiên tiến có hàng tỷ transistor. Nhưng một đống hàng tỷ transistor không phải là một chiếc máy tính. Giống như một đống gạch không phải là một thành phố.

Thành tựu thực sự nằm ở Kiến trúc.

• Transistor nào điều khiển tín hiệu nào?

• Hoạt động nào xảy ra trước?

• Bộ phận nào giao tiếp với bộ phận nào?

• Thông tin được lưu ở đâu?

• Điều gì xảy ra khi hai instruction cùng cần một resource?

Processor hoạt động được bởi vì một số lượng khổng lồ những công tắc siêu nhỏ đã được tổ chức thành các tầng trách nhiệm.

Có thể hình dung: Transistors → Logic Gates → Functional Units → Processes → Computers → Networks

Và Networks tạo nên một phần rất lớn của nền văn minh hiện đại. Ở mỗi tầng, Complexity được kiểm soát bằng cách: Ẩn những chi tiết không cần thiết khỏi tầng phía trên.

Bạn không cần hiểu electron di chuyển thế nào để chỉnh sửa video. Phần mềm chỉnh sửa video cũng không cần biết hình dạng của từng transistor. Mỗi tầng chỉ cần:

1. Làm đúng nhiệm vụ của mình.

2. Cung cấp một interface đơn giản hơn cho tầng tiếp theo.

Đây là một trong những nguyên tắc mạnh nhất của Design:

Và Design chính là: Biết nên chia ở đâu.

Architecture of Scale

Tạo ra một Object hoạt động được đã khó. Nhưng tạo ra một triệu Object có thể hoạt động cùng nhau lại là một bài toán hoàn toàn khác.

Ở quy mô nhỏ, con người có thể dựa vào improvisation (ứng biến).

5 người có thể nói chuyện trực tiếp với nhau. Nhưng khi hệ thống lớn lên, improvisation bắt đầu sụp đổ.

• 5 người → có thể chỉ cần trò chuyện.

• 5.000 người → cần roles, schedules, records, procedures và authority.

Scale đòi hỏi Organization.

Và một trong những công cụ mạnh nhất để tạo ra Scale là:

Standardization — tiêu chuẩn hóa.

Trước khi có container, hàng hóa đến cảng dưới đủ hình thức:

• Bao tải

• Thùng

• Hộp gỗ

• Những kiện hàng có kích thước bất kỳ

Mỗi món có thể cần được xử lý riêng.

Hàng hóa khác nhau → cách sắp xếp khác nhau.

Việc bốc dỡ đòi hỏi rất nhiều:

• Nhân công

• Thời gian

• Phối hợp

Container tiêu chuẩn đã thay đổi hoàn toàn bài toán.

Thay vì phải thiết kế lại toàn bộ quy trình vận chuyển cho từng loại sản phẩm, thế giới có thể thiết kế:

• Tàu

• Cần cẩu

• Xe tải

• Tàu hỏa

Đây chính là sức mạnh của Standardization.

Nhưng điều quan trọng nhất của Container không đơn giản là: Nó có thể chứa đồ. Một chiếc hộp carton cũng làm được điều đó.

Sức mạnh thật sự của Container nằm ở việc nó trở thành một: Giao diện kết nối giữa các hệ thống.

• Nhà máy không cần thiết kế lại sản phẩm cho từng loại tàu.

• Cần cẩu không cần biết bên trong container là gì.

Mỗi bộ phận của hệ thống chỉ cần hiểu: Chuẩn kết nối chung.

Và đó là cách Design giúp: Complexity có thể Scale.

Khi Design bắt đầu Design chính chúng ta

Hãy bước vào một tòa nhà.

Bạn sẽ đi về đâu?

Có lẽ là cửa ra vào.

Tại sao?

Bởi vì bản thân tòa nhà đã giới hạn những hướng mà bạn có thể di chuyển.

Đứng trong một hàng người.

Bạn sẽ đứng ở đâu?

Giữa những rào chắn mà ai đó đã đặt ở đó.

Mở một ứng dụng.

Bạn sẽ bấm nút nào?

Có lẽ là nút:

• Lớn nhất

• Sáng nhất

• Dễ nhìn nhất

• Dễ bấm nhất

Mọi môi trường được Design đều chứa những gợi ý về cách chúng ta nên hành động.

• Có những gợi ý rất nhẹ nhàng.

• Có những gợi ý gần như không thể tránh khỏi.

Điều này đôi khi được gọi là: Choice Architecture (kiến trúc lựa chọn).

Nghĩa là: Cách môi trường được cấu trúc để con người đưa ra quyết định.

Nghiên cứu trong Behavioral Economics cho thấy: Cách các lựa chọn được sắp xếp có thể ảnh hưởng đến lựa chọn của con người. Đặc biệt, lựa chọn mặc định có sức mạnh rất lớn. Bởi vì nhiều người sẽ giữ nguyên lựa chọn đã được chọn sẵn, trừ khi họ chủ động thay đổi nó. Đây là một phần quan trọng trong những đóng góp của Richard Thaler cho Behavioral Economics.

Hãy nhìn xung quanh:

• Menu nhà hàng Design cách bạn nhìn thấy món ăn.

• Siêu thị Design cách bạn tiếp cận sản phẩm.

• Con đường Design cách tài xế được khuyến khích di chuyển nhanh hay chậm.

• Social Platform Design hành động nào chỉ cần 1 click, và hành động nào phải qua 6 bước.

Điều đó có nghĩa: Design không bao giờ hoàn toàn trung lập.

Một chiếc cầu thang giúp một người có thể đi lên. Nhưng đồng thời có thể trở thành rào cản với người sử dụng xe lăn.

Một con đường cao tốc rộng có thể rút ngắn thời gian đi lại. Nhưng cũng có thể chia cắt một khu dân cư.

Vì vậy:

Bad Design không phải lúc nào cũng trông như một thứ bị lỗi.

Đôi khi nó đang hoạt động chính xác như cách nó được thiết kế.

Ví dụ:

Một quy trình hủy dịch vụ phức tạp có thể là Bad Design đối với khách hàng. Nhưng lại là Good Design đối với mục tiêu giữ doanh thu của công ty.

Và đó chính là Design. Nó ở khắp mọi nơi.

Bạn chỉ không nhận ra nó… bởi vì:

Đó chính là điều Design làm tốt nhất.

Nó âm thầm định hình cách chúng ta di chuyển, lựa chọn và hành động mà chúng ta thậm chí không nhận ra.

Thật ra, những bài viết An chia sẻ trên Substack chưa bao giờ được viết như một cuốn sách giáo khoa chuẩn chỉnh. Với An, đây giống như những mẩu ghi chú trong quá trình làm nghề — một ý nghĩ vừa lóe lên, một bài học rút ra sau một ngày làm việc, hay đôi khi chỉ là một cảm xúc rất nhỏ nhưng đáng nhớ. An chọn chia sẻ chúng đúng như cách mình trải qua: không đánh bóng, không “văn vẻ hóa”, chỉ là những câu chuyện thật từ người đang làm nghề.

Nếu có một điều gì đó khiến bạn dừng lại, gật đầu hay suy nghĩ thêm một chút, An rất muốn nghe. Để lại cho An một comment nhé — An tin rằng tụi mình có thể học được rất nhiều từ câu chuyện của nhau.

Nếu bạn đang là một designer mới vào nghề, một người đang muốn bước lên vai trò lead, hay một người đang học cách trở thành một người quản lý tốt hơn — biết đâu một vài điều trong bài viết này sẽ đến với bạn đúng lúc.

“Nếu chỉ được chia sẻ một điều nên làm và một điều không nên làm trong giao tiếp, các bạn sẽ chọn điều gì?”

Sau nhiều năm làm Product Designer và dẫn dắt các đội ngũ thiết kế, An đúc kết được một vài nguyên tắc mà đến hôm nay vẫn luôn tin là đúng.

Đừng khuyến khích người khác làm điều họ không có khả năng

An rất cẩn thận. An không bao giờ khuyến khích ai theo đuổi điều mà An tin rằng họ không có khả năng đạt được. An lấy ví như vầy:

Nếu An cần một người có thể nhảy cao 2 mét, thì việc tìm bảy người chỉ nhảy được 30 cm cũng không giúp ích gì.

Bạn không thể biến họ thành vận động viên nhảy cao chỉ bằng động lực hay lời cổ vũ.

Phát triển năng lực khác với ép người khác làm điều không phù hợp

An thích thách thức mọi người phát triển.

Nhưng có một ranh giới rất rõ:

Nếu ai đó đã có tố chất, An có thể giúp họ phát huy tối đa. Nhưng nếu họ không hề có năng lực cốt lõi, việc tiếp tục thúc ép chỉ khiến họ thất vọng.

Đó là lý do An hiếm khi nói về "tài năng". Thay vào đó, An luôn tìm kiếm những tố chất nền tảng — bởi đó mới là thứ quyết định một người có thể phát triển đến đâu.

Quy luật 1%

Khi bạn phát triển từ mức trung bình lên nhóm 10% giỏi nhất, cuộc sống đã thay đổi đáng kể. Nhưng nếu từ top 10% tiếp tục vươn lên top 1%, phần tiến bộ cuối cùng đó tạo ra giá trị lớn hơn rất nhiều.

Theo An, 9% cuối cùng mang lại giá trị gấp 8–10 lần so với 90% đầu tiên.

Nhưng có một sự thật khó nghe: Không phải ai cũng có thể trở thành top 1%.

Có những lĩnh vực đòi hỏi tài năng bẩm sinh. Nếu không có nền tảng đó, dù rất chăm chỉ, bạn vẫn khó đạt đến đỉnh cao.

Đừng bán cho người khác một giấc mơ không có thật

Có người từng nói: “An mà học piano thì chắc sẽ giỏi lắm.” Hay "An thử đi làm ca sĩ xem. Anh thấy giọng em hay đấy."

Nghe thì vui thật.

Nhưng An biết điều đó không phù hợp với mình.

Không phải vì An ngại cố gắng. Mà vì An hiểu, có những thứ chỉ cần thích là đủ. Không nhất thiết phải biến nó thành mục tiêu theo đuổi cả đời.

Có những giới hạn, nếu mình chấp nhận sớm, mình sẽ dành thời gian để phát triển đúng điểm mạnh của bản thân.

Một người sếp giỏi sẽ hiểu giới hạn của con người

Một câu chuyện An từng trải qua.

An có một bạn Product Designer trong team mà An rất quý.

Bạn ấy rất chăm chỉ.

Mọi người đều yêu mến.

Làm việc với PM và Engineer cũng rất hiệu quả.

Sau khoảng hai năm, em ấy đến gặp An và nói: “Em muốn trở thành Design Lead.” An không trả lời ngay. Thay vào đó, An giao cho em ấy một vài nhiệm vụ nhỏ.

Trong ba tháng tiếp theo, em ấy sẽ:

• Mentor một bạn Junior

• Review thiết kế

• Dẫn dắt Design Critique

• Chịu trách nhiệm điều phối một dự án nhỏ

Ba tháng sau, An ngồi lại với em ấy. An hỏi: “Em thấy ba tháng vừa rồi thế nào?”

Em ấy cười buồn đáp: “... em nhớ cảm giác được ngồi thiết kế.”

Em ấy kể mỗi ngày đều phải:

• Họp

• Giải quyết mâu thuẫn

• Coaching

• Theo dõi tiến độ

Đến cuối ngày... Hầu như không còn thời gian mở Figma.

Lúc đó An mới hỏi: “Điều gì khiến em hạnh phúc nhất khi đi làm?”

Em ấy trả lời ngay: “Là khi em giải quyết được một bài toán thiết kế khó.”

An nói tiếp. “Vậy có lẽ em không thực sự muốn trở thành Design Lead. Điều em muốn là trở thành một Product Designer giỏi hơn.”

Sau cuộc nói chuyện đó, em ấy quyết định tiếp tục phát triển theo lộ trình IC.

Hai năm sau... Em ấy trở thành Staff Product Designer. Mức thu nhập còn cao hơn nhiều Design Lead.

Quan trọng hơn... Em ấy vẫn được làm công việc mình yêu thích mỗi ngày.

Điều An thực sự muốn nói thông qua câu chuyện là: Không phải vì em đó lười. Cũng không phải vì thiếu cố gắng. Mà vì, em chưa có năng lực phù hợp với vai trò ấy.

Một người sếp phải đủ tỉnh táo để phân biệt giữa: Điều người khác muốn. Và điều họ thực sự có thể đảm nhận.

Đó cũng là lý do An rất hạn chế khuyến khích một ai đó theo đuổi những điều vượt quá năng lực cốt lõi của họ.

Đừng động viên sai người

Có một nguyên tắc mà An luôn ghi nhớ: Đừng động viên hay cổ vũ người khác theo đuổi một điều mà bạn biết sẽ không tốt cho họ.

Quan tâm đến ai đó không chỉ là nói điều họ muốn nghe. Mà còn là dám nói sự thật, theo cách đủ tử tế để họ có thể đón nhận.

Nếu thiếu một trong hai...

• Chỉ có sự thật mà thiếu sự tử tế, bạn sẽ làm tổn thương họ.

• Chỉ có sự tử tế mà thiếu sự thật, bạn sẽ vô tình cản họ trưởng thành.

Làm điều mình yêu thích có giúp giàu hơn không?

Một nghiên cứu của Ramsey Solutions trên hơn 10.000 triệu phú tự thân đã phát hiện một điều rất thú vị.

Những người thực sự yêu công việc mình đang làm có giá trị tài sản cao hơn khoảng 58% so với những người không yêu công việc của mình.

Tại sao lại như vậy?

Rất khó để trở thành người giỏi trong một công việc mà bạn ghét. Đơn giản vậy thôi.

Hầu như không ai từ bỏ một việc mà mình làm rất giỏi. Người ta thường bỏ cuộc vì họ không giỏi, chứ không phải vì họ quá giỏi. Và để trở nên giỏi, họ cần có đam mê.

Đam mê khiến:

• Muốn luyện tập nhiều hơn.

• Muốn cải thiện kỹ năng mỗi ngày.

• Muốn làm tốt hơn hôm qua.

Chính điều đó mới tạo nên sự xuất sắc.

Khi bạn thật sự thích một công việc, bạn sẽ dành rất nhiều thời gian để luyện tập.

Bạn liên tục:

• Học hỏi

• Thử nghiệm

• Sửa sai

• Mài giũa kỹ năng

Lấy ví dụ chính là An, người đang ngồi viết nội dung này.

An đã bắt đầu viết cách đây 3 năm. Nếu xem lại những bài viết đầu tiên, chắc chắn chúng không hay một chút nào. Nhưng vì An yêu công việc này nên An kiên trì cải thiện. Qua từng năm, An ngày càng viết tốt hơn.

An nghĩ điều đó đến từ một vòng lặp rất đơn giản:

Đam mê → Luyện tập nhiều hơn → Kỹ năng tốt hơn → Sáng tạo hơn → Thành công hơn.

An từng đọc một cuốn sách có tên:

“Hãy làm điều bạn yêu, tiền sẽ tự đến.”

Cuốn sách đó ảnh hưởng đến An rất nhiều.

Nó khiến An quyết định từ bỏ công việc mình đã chọn để bước sang một lĩnh vực hoàn toàn mới, cách đây khoảng 15 năm.

Ba mẹ An phản đối.

Nhưng An vẫn nói:

“Con phải làm điều mình thích.”

Đến bây giờ, An vẫn tin: Yêu công việc mình làm là một lợi thế rất lớn.

Nhưng...

An cũng nhận ra một điều. Lời khuyên: “Hãy theo đuổi đam mê.” đã bị thần thánh hóa quá mức.

Ví dụ như An rất thích chơi organ.

Thật sự rất thích.

Nhưng... An chơi không hay.

Thế là An dành rất nhiều thời gian để luyện. Nhưng rồi An nhận ra một sự thật khá phũ: Đam mê không đồng nghĩa với năng khiếu.

Có những người chỉ cần tập một thời gian đã chơi rất hay. Còn An, dù rất yêu thích, vẫn không thể đạt đến trình độ mà mình mong muốn.

Và lúc đó An có một bài học:

Yêu một điều không có nghĩa bạn sẽ giỏi điều đó.

Đừng biến mọi sở thích thành nghề nghiệp.

Nếu bạn rất thích một việc... Nhưng bạn không có năng lực với nó... Thì: Đừng biến nó thành nghề nghiệp.

Hãy để nó là một sở thích.

Việc cố biến sở thích thành nghề đôi khi còn khiến bạn mất luôn niềm vui ban đầu.

Điều bạn nên theo đuổi là kiểu công việc, không phải sở thích.

Nhiều bạn trẻ nói: “Em muốn làm Design.”

Nhưng thực ra...

Không phải.

Các bạn chỉ muốn:

Được người khác ngưỡng mộ và có mức lương cao.

Đó là hai chuyện hoàn toàn khác nhau.

Thay vì hỏi: “Mình thích làm gì?”

Hãy hỏi: “Mình thích làm kiểu công việc nào?”

Ví dụ:

Bạn thích:

• Nói chuyện với người khác

• Giải quyết vấn đề

• Dạy học

• Thiết kế

• Nấu ăn

Thì những hoạt động đó có thể xuất hiện trong rất nhiều nghề khác nhau. Đó mới là điều bạn nên theo đuổi.

You don’t need to spend your time trying to prove yourself to everyone. The moment you become more disciplined, earn a little more, or make progress in your life, someone will feel uncomfortable. People who don’t put in the work often criticize those who do. People who aren’t building anything tend to judge the ones who are. And those who aren’t succeeding may convince themselves that your success somehow came at their expense.

But your job isn’t to win everyone’s approval.

Your job is to stay focused on your own goals. Keep doing the work that helps you grow, create more value, improve your skills, and build a better life. Become someone who is capable, trustworthy, and someone others genuinely want to work with.

The truth is, even when you’re doing good work and creating real value, people may not recognize it right away. Recognition often comes much later—sometimes only after you’ve gone much further, or even after you’ve moved on.

So don’t let outside opinions steal your focus.

Everything else? If it isn’t helping you move forward, don’t let it hold you back.

Today, watching the cursor blink on my screen, I found myself thinking less about looming deadlines or launch plans. Instead, I kept coming back to the projects that quietly shaped who I’ve become as a designer.

People often ask me: “Which project has meant the most to you?”

The honest answer? It’s changed a lot over the years.

Early on, I would have immediately said Quick, Draw! It was one of those rare, lightning-in-a-bottle moments to help build something from the ground up—playful on the surface, but deeply ambitious underneath. We weren’t just making a game; we were exploring how humans and AI could learn from one another. Every sketch became a tiny lesson for a machine, and every smile from a user reminded us that technology doesn’t always have to feel “serious” to be meaningful. That project didn’t just bring recognition; it gave me the confidence to trust my own curiosity. It taught me that thoughtful design can turn complex tech into something simple, approachable, and even joyful.

A few years later, my perspective shifted again.

Working on AI-powered learning experiences for Skillshop introduced a completely different set of challenges. We stopped asking, “How can AI entertain?” and started asking, “How can it help people grow?”

• How do you build trust when the tech itself is evolving every single day?

• How do you personalize learning without it feeling mechanical?

• How do you provide guidance without stripping away a learner’s sense of ownership?

There wasn’t a manual for this. We learned by building, testing, listening, and repeating. Progress rarely came in giant, cinematic leaps; it arrived through hundreds of small, quiet decisions that eventually added up to better experiences for millions.

Then, there was the opportunity to work on Gemini.

By then, my relationship with AI had shifted once more. With Gemini, the question became much, much bigger: How do you design an AI that people can genuinely rely on every day?

The work feels fundamentally different now. We’re no longer designing isolated features or single-purpose tools. We’re shaping a new way for people to explore ideas, solve problems, create, and simply think alongside AI. That carries a different weight of responsibility. Every interaction has to balance capability with clarity, speed with trust, and intelligence with empathy.

Ultimately, the challenge isn’t just making AI more powerful. It’s making that power feel approachable and genuinely useful. AI has a way of humbling you—the moment you think you’ve designed the “perfect” interaction, someone halfway across the world uses it in a way you never imagined. Those moments taught me that great design isn’t about predicting behavior; it’s about making room for human creativity.

It’s measured by what it enables people to do.

Looking back, it’s clear how every chapter prepared me for the next. Quick, Draw! showed me AI could delight. Skillshop taught me it could empower. Gemini is teaching me that it can become a true partner—helping us think and solve problems in ways we could only have dreamed of a few years ago.

As this chapter closes, I find myself thinking less about the features we shipped and more about the people I had the privilege to build them with.

I think of the debates that strengthened our ideas. The late nights before a launch. The moments when user research completely shattered our assumptions. Those countless conversations reminded me that great products are never built by a lone genius. They’re created by teams that care—really care—about the people they’re building for.

I often come back to a simple phrase I grew up with: Vui vẻ là được rồi.

Being happy is enough.

Not because the work is ever finished. Not because every launch is perfect. But fulfilment has never really been about reaching the destination. It’s about caring deeply about the journey, the people walking beside you, and the chance to build something that might make someone else’s day just a little bit better.

I’m incredibly grateful for this chapter. And honestly? I’m even more excited for whatever comes next.

Some of the most valuable lessons I learned during my time in Big Tech had little to do with design—and everything to do with life.

• Focus isn’t about doing more. It’s about protecting what matters most.

• Great meetings start with a clear decision, not a long discussion.

• Progress begins when intentions become specific actions.

• Speed comes from reducing decision friction, not increasing effort.

• Reliability is invisible—until it’s not.

• Clear team boundaries reduce more friction than endless communication.

• Don’t just raise problems—bring options and a recommendation.

• Great teams build systems that don’t need heroes.

• If you can’t observe it, you can’t improve it.

• Small changes create faster progress than big launches.

• Scaling a team without reducing coordination costs rarely scales output.

• Successful migrations are organizational transformations, not technical projects.

• AI makes creation abundant. Judgment makes value scarce.

• Trust is the highest-leverage asset you can build.

Sitting here, I’m often reminded of how far we’ve come. They say that back in 2007, the team started at Collyer Quay with just 24 people. Today, I’m part of a community of 3,000. Standing in the atrium—that massive connector between our buildings—I don’t just see an office. I see a space designed for “accidental magic.” It’s built to make us bump into each other, and that’s where the best ideas actually happen.

Being part of the Gemini team feels like standing at the forefront of something truly transformative. Every day, we’re shaping how people interact with AI, pushing boundaries to make technology more intuitive and helpful. It’s fast-paced and challenging, but seeing the impact of what we build unfold in real-time is incredibly rewarding.

To me, this office isn’t just a workplace; it’s a space where I can just be human. When things get intense, I might head to my favourite Bali-inspired workspace to soak up some sunlight or find a quiet corner to reset. Some might call these perks, but I see them as a gentle permission to be balanced. After all, creativity doesn’t thrive under constant pressure; it thrives in balance.

But if I’m being honest, my favorite memory here isn’t a high-stakes meeting. It was the day I brought my dad to visit. Seeing the pride in his eyes as he walked through the halls, watching him beam as he took photos of every corner to share with his friends—that was my true achievement. Not the projects, not the code, but the fact that I’ve given him a reason to be proud of me.

I even caught myself at the Lego station today, mindlessly moving bricks around while trying to untangle a design challenge. It sounds a bit silly, but it works! And then there’s the hospitality—the chefs, the snacks, the way we’re taken care of. It’s those little things that make this place feel like a community rather than just a company.

I know that one day, I will move on to a different chapter. And when that day comes, I know it won’t just be the work I’ll miss—it’ll be this atmosphere. I’ll miss the “vui vẻ” hum of the corridors, the sanctuary of our quiet corners, and the intentional design that makes coming to work feel like coming home.

I’m grateful for this space—not for the fancy lights or the decor, but because it fosters curiosity. It’s a constant reminder that no matter how big the technology gets, the heart of it will always be the people.

Here are a few things that make this office more than just a place to work:

• There’s greenery everywhere you look, making the massive space feel incredibly alive. We even have a lush, open-air garden that stretches beautifully from the first floor down to the ground level.

• One of the sweetest touches is when you bring guests or family to visit—their names light up on the LED screen right in the main lobby. It always makes them feel so special.

• Every corner of the office is filled with creative, unique installations. Whether you’re looking for design inspiration or just a great spot for a quick selfie, you’ll never run out of backdrops.

• There’s a well-stocked pantry on every floor with free snacks and drinks. And for those moments that need a little extra pick-me-up, we even have professional bartenders on hand to craft the perfect beverage.

• Every level is equipped with bar counters, gaming rooms, a gym, and even nap rooms. It’s comforting to know that whether I need to focus deeply or fully recharge, the space is there to support me.

• The main canteen on the 32nd floor is a dream. With over 50 buffet dishes from around the world served daily, it’s a global culinary tour. And yes, there are even days when I get a craving for Phở—and I can actually get it right here! :D

Another day down, another day of building the future with Gemini. I think I’ll enjoy every bit of it while I’m still here.

I was only partially right.

As my career evolved—from designing mobile apps to enterprise platforms, from shipping MVPs to leading complex product ecosystems, and from being an individual contributor to leading design teams—I realized something surprising. The quality of a product is rarely limited by the quality of its interface. More often, it’s limited by the quality of decisions behind that interface.

A confusing onboarding flow usually isn’t a UI problem. It’s a product strategy problem. A feature nobody uses usually isn’t a visual design problem. It’s a prioritization problem. Poor collaboration between Design, Product, and Engineering eventually shows up in the user experience, regardless of how talented individual designers are.

Over time, I stopped thinking of design as screen-making. I started thinking of it as decision-making.

The further you grow in your career, the less your value comes from the artifacts you create. Instead, it comes from your ability to create clarity—clarity for users, clarity for your team, clarity for stakeholders, and clarity in moments where everyone else sees uncertainty.

That’s what design leadership has become for me. Not creating every solution, but helping teams discover the right one.

These lessons weren’t learned in a classroom. Some came from successful product launches. Others came from painful failures. Some were taught by brilliant designers, while others came from engineers, product managers, executives, and customers. Many took years to truly understand.

None of them depend on Figma, AI, or the latest design trend. Tools will continue to evolve, but the principles behind great products rarely do.

This book is my attempt to collect those principles.

If you’re early in your design career, I hope these lessons help you avoid some of the mistakes I made. If you’re already leading teams, I hope they remind you that leadership is less about having the answers and more about creating environments where great answers can emerge.

Let’s begin.

Great designers don’t design first. They understand first

One of the biggest misconceptions about product design is that our work begins inside a design tool. It doesn’t. It begins with curiosity.

Early in my career, I was eager to solve problems before I fully understood them. A stakeholder would describe an issue, and I’d immediately start sketching solutions. Sometimes they looked impressive. Many solved the wrong problem.

Over time, I learned that users rarely ask for what they actually need. They describe symptoms. Our responsibility is to discover the cause.

That means spending time with users before spending time with interfaces. Watch how they work. Listen to how they describe their frustrations. Pay attention to where they hesitate. Observe what they do—not just what they say.

The strongest designers I’ve worked with aren’t the fastest in Figma. They’re the most curious people in the room. They ask “Why?” repeatedly. Why is this frustrating? Why does this step exist? Why is this behavior happening? Why hasn’t anyone questioned this assumption before?

Eventually, the conversation stops being about screens. It becomes about human behavior. And once the problem becomes obvious, the interface often becomes surprisingly simple.

Great design is rarely the result of creative inspiration. It’s usually the outcome of deep understanding.

Never fall in love with your first solution. Fall in love with understanding the problem.

Alignment is a design deliverable

Many designers believe their responsibility ends after presenting a thoughtful solution. In reality, that’s often where the work begins.

Products are built by teams. A brilliant design that engineering cannot implement or product management doesn’t prioritize creates no value.

As Design Leads, we often think our job is to defend the design. I’ve learned it’s more important to align the team.

Alignment isn’t agreement on every detail. It’s a shared understanding about what problem we’re solving and why.

Some of the best meetings I’ve attended ended without a final decision, yet everyone left with the same understanding of the challenge. That clarity accelerated every decision afterwards.

Winning arguments is satisfying. Building alignment is transformative.

Design leadership isn’t about proving you’re right. It’s about helping everyone arrive at the right answer together.

Ship learning, not perfection

Perfection feels safe. Shipping feels risky. Ironically, the opposite is often true.

I’ve watched teams spend months refining experiences that users never asked for. I’ve also seen rough prototypes generate insights that completely changed a product’s direction.

Real learning begins the moment users interact with something real—a prototype, a clickable mockup, a beta release, or an MVP.

Every week spent debating hypothetical scenarios is a week not spent learning from reality.

The best product teams don’t optimize for perfect launches. They optimize for learning velocity.

Ship something. Observe. Learn. Improve. Then repeat.

Progress compounds through feedback. Perfection delays feedback. And delayed feedback is one of the most expensive mistakes a product team can make.

Clarity is the highest form of design leadership

Junior designers create deliverables. Senior designers create systems. Design leaders create clarity.

The longer I’ve worked in product organizations, the less time I’ve spent reviewing pixels. Instead, I’ve spent more time answering questions like: What problem are we actually solving? Why does this feature matter? How will we measure success? What principles should guide future decisions?

Clear principles eliminate countless debates.

When teams understand the “why,” they make better decisions without waiting for permission. That’s how organizations scale—not by adding more approvals, but by creating more clarity.

One of the most valuable skills a Design Lead can develop isn’t visual design. It’s simplifying complexity.

If your team depends on you to make every decision, you’ve created dependency. If your team understands how to make good decisions independently, you’ve created leadership.

Business metrics are ux metrics

Many designers separate business goals from user experience. I’ve learned they’re deeply connected.

Users don’t care about quarterly revenue. Businesses don’t care about beautiful interfaces alone. Both care about outcomes.

When a user completes onboarding faster, the business acquires customers more efficiently. When support requests decrease, operational costs decrease. When retention improves, the product becomes healthier.

Good UX creates measurable business value.

Great Product Designers understand both sides of the equation.

Design isn’t about making products prettier. It’s about making products more valuable.

Every design decision should answer two questions: How does this improve the user’s experience? How does this improve the product’s success?

When those answers reinforce each other, design becomes a strategic function instead of a service function.

The engineer who taught me more about leadership than any design manager

The person who changed my thinking wasn’t another designer. He was an engineering lead.

Every difficult project seemed to become easier when he joined—not because he wrote more code, but because people trusted him.

He rarely spoke first. He asked questions. He summarized disagreements fairly. He never tried to win arguments. Yet somehow the room almost always followed him.

One afternoon, I asked him why.

He laughed.

“People don’t follow certainty.”

“They follow someone who helps them think more clearly.”

I’ve never forgotten that sentence.

Leadership isn’t authority. It’s borrowed trust.

Good designers build interfaces. Great designers build trust

When people talk about design maturity, they often focus on design systems, research operations, or sophisticated workflows. Those things matter.

But underneath every successful product team lies something much simpler.

Trust.

Trust that engineering will deliver. Trust that product will prioritize responsibly. Trust that research represents users honestly. Trust that design considers business constraints.

Without trust, every decision becomes negotiation. Every meeting becomes debate. Every project moves slower.

Trust is built gradually through transparency, reliability, humility, and consistency.

Over twelve years, I’ve forgotten many design files. I’ve forgotten countless presentations. I’ve forgotten hundreds of screens. But I still remember the people who trusted me enough to build difficult products together.

In the end, products don’t scale because of better software alone. They scale because teams learn to trust each other enough to solve difficult problems together.

And perhaps that’s the biggest lesson of all.

Design has never really been about interfaces.

It’s always been about people.

Every design decision is a product decision

One of the biggest shifts in my career happened when I stopped asking, “How should we design this?” and started asking, “Should we build this at all?”

Many organizations mistake Product Design for interface design. They’re not the same.

Interface Design asks, “How can we make this feature easy to use?” Product Design asks, “Does this feature deserve to exist?” The difference is enormous.

I’ve seen teams spend months polishing experiences that created almost no value because nobody challenged the original assumption. The most valuable contribution a Design Lead can make isn’t creating another beautiful screen. It’s preventing the team from building the wrong product.

Every feature has a cost. Not only the development cost, but also maintenance, customer support, technical debt, documentation, future redesigns, and cognitive load. Every button you add competes for the user’s attention. Every workflow increases complexity. Every setting creates another decision someone has to make.

Great designers don’t measure success by how much they design. They measure success by how much unnecessary complexity they remove.

Sometimes the best design decision is to say, “I don’t think users need this.” That takes courage, especially in organizations where progress is measured by shipping features instead of solving problems.

Design leadership means protecting simplicity, even when complexity appears more impressive.

Research doesn’t end when discovery ends

Many teams treat research as the first phase of a project. They interview users, define personas, map journeys, and then move on.

The problem is that users continue changing after launch. Markets change. Competitors change. Technology changes. People adapt.

If research happens only before design, your understanding becomes outdated surprisingly quickly.

Some of the most valuable insights I’ve discovered happened months after a product launched. They came from watching support tickets, reading customer reviews, analyzing session recordings, talking to Customer Success, and observing how people hacked our intended workflows.

Research isn’t a deliverable. It’s a continuous conversation with reality.

The best product organizations never stop learning.

Discovery isn’t a phase. It’s a mindset.

Design Leaders create organizations that stay curious long after launch.

Design systems scale teams—not components

Early in my career, I thought Design Systems were simply libraries filled with buttons, typography, spacing, icons, and components.

Today, I see them differently.

A Design System is an agreement. It’s a shared language that allows hundreds of decisions to happen consistently without constant discussion.

The biggest value of a Design System isn’t visual consistency. It’s decision consistency.

When designers no longer debate basic UI patterns, they spend more energy solving user problems. When engineers reuse predictable components, they spend less time rebuilding identical functionality. When Product Managers understand established interaction patterns, planning becomes faster.

A mature Design System doesn’t limit creativity. It protects creativity from being wasted on repetitive decisions.

The goal isn’t standardization for its own sake. It’s reducing the cognitive load of collaboration.

Because the most expensive design inconsistency usually isn’t visual.

It’s organizational.

AI won’t replace designers. It will raise the bar for designers

Every technological shift changes what valuable work looks like.

Design is no exception.

Many people ask, “Will AI replace Product Designers?”

I think that’s the wrong question.

The better question is, “What parts of design should humans no longer spend time doing?”

Today, AI can summarize research, generate user flows, write UX copy, create wireframes, review interfaces, generate personas, analyze competitors, organize documentation, and even critique design decisions.

None of these eliminates the need for designers.

They eliminate repetitive execution.

Which means our value moves higher.

• Less production. More judgment.

• Less drawing. More decision-making.

• Less documentation. More strategy.

Design Leaders should embrace this shift—not because AI produces perfect work. It doesn’t. But because it gives teams more time to solve harder problems.

Technology has always automated execution.

The most valuable professionals moved closer to decisions.

Design will do the same.

Writing makes you a better designer

One habit transformed my career more than any design course.

Writing.

Design documents, decision logs, research summaries, workshop agendas, vision statements, design principles, and strategy memos all share one powerful characteristic.

Writing forces precision.

It’s impossible to hide vague thinking inside a well-written document. Every sentence exposes assumptions. Every paragraph reveals missing logic.

Many difficult product discussions become dramatically easier once someone writes the problem clearly.

I’ve watched hour-long debates disappear after a two-page document.

Not because everyone suddenly agreed.

Because everyone finally understood.

The ability to explain a complex product problem simply is one of the most underrated leadership skills in design.

If you want clearer thinking, write more.

Not for documentation.

For understanding.

Mentoring is designed at a human scale

As an Individual Contributor, your impact comes from the products you design.

As a Design Lead, your impact increasingly comes from the designers you help grow.

That transition isn’t easy.

Many new managers struggle because they continue solving every problem themselves.

It feels faster.

Sometimes it is.

But leadership isn’t about maximizing today’s output.

It’s about increasing tomorrow’s capability.

I’ve learned to replace answers with questions.

Instead of saying, “Here’s what I would do,” I ask, “What assumptions are you making?” “What evidence supports this?” “What alternatives did you consider?”

The goal isn’t to produce designers who think like me.

It’s producing designers who think independently.

Good mentoring creates confidence.

Great mentoring creates judgment.

Eventually, your team should solve problems you never could have solved alone.

That’s when leadership becomes multiplicative.

Your influence extends far beyond your own work.

The most valuable work is often invisible

Every organization depends on people who connect everything together. They organize workshops, improve onboarding, document processes, facilitate collaboration, resolve misunderstandings, share knowledge, build templates, coach teammates, and improve rituals.

Most of this work never appears in a portfolio. It rarely receives awards. It often goes unnoticed.

Yet organizations couldn’t function without it.

Early in my career, I treated this as “extra work.”

Today, I see it differently.

This is infrastructure.

Good infrastructure doesn’t draw attention.

It quietly enables everyone else to perform better.

The challenge is that invisible work easily becomes invisible value.

Design Leaders should make this work intentional. Document it. Measure its impact. Turn repeated effort into reusable systems. Replace recurring meetings with better documentation. Replace repeated explanations with shared principles. Replace tribal knowledge with organizational knowledge.

The goal isn’t to become indispensable.

The goal is to build systems that no longer depend on you.

That’s the highest form of leadership.

When your absence doesn’t slow the organization, you’ve successfully scaled yourself.

If everything is high priority, nothing is

One of the biggest mistakes product teams make isn’t building the wrong thing. It’s trying to build everything.

As designers, we’re natural optimists. We see opportunities everywhere. Improve onboarding. Redesign search. Create personalization. Build AI features. Refactor the Design System. Improve accessibility. Optimize performance. Every idea sounds valuable.

The challenge isn’t finding opportunities. It’s deciding what deserves attention today.

The longer I’ve worked in product organizations, the more I’ve realized that prioritization is one of the highest-leverage design skills.

Great Product Designers don’t just solve problems. They choose which problems are worth solving.

Every “yes” carries an invisible cost: time, focus, engineering effort, opportunity cost, and organizational attention.

Every roadmap reflects hundreds of decisions about what not to build.

Design Leaders help teams become comfortable saying no—not because ideas lack value, but because focus creates momentum.

A product succeeds because it does a few important things exceptionally well, not because it attempts everything.

The most mature teams I’ve worked with aren’t those that ship the most features. They’re the ones that know exactly what they refuse to build.

Data explains what. Research explains why

Modern product teams have access to more data than ever before. Funnels, heatmaps, retention curves, session recordings, A/B tests, engagement metrics—every click can be measured.

Yet many organizations still struggle to understand their users.

Because numbers rarely explain human behavior.

Analytics might tell you that 42% of users abandon onboarding. Research explains why.

Analytics tell you where people stop. Interviews reveal what they’re thinking.

Metrics identify symptoms. Research uncovers causes.

The strongest Product Designers combine both perspectives.

They avoid two common traps.

The first is designing purely from intuition.

The second is designing purely from dashboards.

Neither tells the full story.

Design isn’t statistics.

Neither is it guesswork.

It’s the practice of turning evidence into decisions.

The goal isn’t collecting more data.

The goal is to increase understanding.

When data and empathy reinforce each other, product decisions become remarkably clear.

Your career is built between projects

Most people remember successful launches, promotions, awards, and major redesigns.

Those moments matter.

But careers aren’t built during milestones.

They’re built between them.

In ordinary conversations. Helping a teammate. Giving thoughtful feedback. Mentoring someone new. Writing documentation. Leading difficult discussions. Building trust over years instead of weeks.

I’ve seen incredibly talented designers struggle because nobody knew how they worked. I’ve also seen solid designers become exceptional leaders because people trusted them.

Your portfolio opens doors.

Your reputation keeps them open.

Every interaction contributes to that reputation.

People remember how you respond under pressure, whether you share credit, whether you admit mistakes, and whether you make collaboration easier or harder.

Products come and go.

Relationships compound.

The strongest careers are rarely built on one remarkable project.

They’re built on hundreds of ordinary moments handled remarkably well.

The best ux is the feature you never built

Design culture often celebrates creation.

New flows.

New capabilities.

New interactions.

Innovation becomes synonymous with addition.

But maturity often looks different.

It looks like subtraction.

Removing a step from onboarding. Eliminating a settings page. Deleting unnecessary notifications. Combining three workflows into one. Reducing choices. Simplifying navigation.

Every feature introduced today becomes tomorrow’s maintenance cost.

Someone has to support it, test it, document it, explain it, and maintain it.

The cleanest interface isn’t empty.

It’s intentional.

One question has become increasingly valuable throughout my career:

“What happens if we simply don’t build this?”

Sometimes the answer is surprising.

Nothing.

If removing a feature creates no measurable loss for users, perhaps it never created value in the first place.

Great designers aren’t remembered for how much they created.

They’re remembered for how much unnecessary complexity they prevented.

Every process should earn its place

Design reviews. Approval workflows. Sprint rituals. Documentation. Templates. Governance.

Initially, these structures help.

Eventually, some become bureaucracy.

One principle has guided me for years.

Every process should answer one simple question:

“What uncertainty does this reduce?”

• If a meeting creates clarity, keep it.

• If documentation prevents repeated confusion, write it.

• If a review improves decision quality, continue it.

But if a process exists only because it has always existed, challenge it.

Good processes accelerate collaboration.

Bad processes slow intelligent people down.

The purpose of the process isn’t control.

It’s confidence.

Design Leaders shouldn’t protect the process.

They should protect outcomes.

Sometimes simplifying the process is the highest-impact design decision you can make—not for users, but for the organization itself.

Time eventually becomes more valuable than money

Early in our careers, we optimize for learning.

Then for salary.

Then for promotions.

Eventually, something changes.

You begin measuring success differently.

Not by compensation.

• By attention.

• By energy.

• By time.

I’ve met incredibly successful leaders who earned everything they once wanted, only to realize they had very little space left for the things that mattered most: health, family, curiosity, reading, teaching, and thinking deeply.

The irony is that Product Design isn’t a profession rewarded by constant busyness.

Thoughtful decisions require space.

Some of my best product ideas didn’t emerge during meetings.

They emerged while walking, reading, teaching, mentoring, and reflecting.

• Protect your calendar.

• Protect your focus.

• Protect your energy.

Because eventually those become your most valuable professional assets.

Time isn’t merely something we spend.

It’s the resource from which every meaningful contribution is created.

Compound learning always beats raw talent

People often ask what separates exceptional Product Designers from average ones.

Talent helps.

Curiosity matters more.

The strongest designers I’ve met weren’t necessarily the smartest people in the room.

They simply improved continuously.

• Every project became a lesson.

• Every failed usability test became knowledge.

• Every difficult stakeholder conversation improved their communication.

• Every product launch refines their judgment.

They documented what worked.

Shared what they learned.

Mentored others.

Built frameworks.

Created reusable thinking.

Learning compounds—not because knowledge accumulates, but because better knowledge creates better decisions. Better decisions create better opportunities. Better opportunities create faster growth.

Small improvements repeated consistently outperform occasional breakthroughs.

Don’t chase shortcuts.

Build habits.

Read widely.

Write regularly.

Teach frequently.

Seek feedback.

Question assumptions.

Stay curious.

The future belongs to designers who never stop learning.

Final thoughts

Design was never about screens.

When I look back over the last fifteen years, I don’t remember most of the interfaces I designed. Many no longer exist. Products were redesigned. Companies changed direction. Technologies evolved. Design trends came and went. AI transformed workflows. Entire industries shifted.

But the lessons remained.

Users still want products that solve real problems. Teams still need alignment more than certainty. Trust still moves organizations faster than authority. Curiosity still outperforms certainty. Clarity still beats complexity. Leadership still means helping others succeed.

Perhaps the biggest misconception about Product Design is believing that our work ends when the interface is complete.

In reality, that’s where the product begins.

Design influences strategy. Strategy shapes execution. Execution creates experience. Experience builds trust. Trust creates businesses people choose to return to.

That’s why Product Design has never been merely about aesthetics.

• It’s about improving decisions.

• Reducing uncertainty.

• Creating understanding.

• Helping people accomplish meaningful work with less effort.

Whether you’re designing your first mobile app or leading an international design organization, the responsibility remains remarkably similar.

• Understand deeply.

• Think systematically.

• Collaborate generously.

• Build intentionally.

• Learn continuously.

Because great designers don’t simply create products.

• They shape how organizations think.

• They shape how teams collaborate.

• They shape how users experience technology.

And over time, they help shape the future itself.

One last lesson

If there’s one idea I hope stays with you after reading these articles, it’s this:

Your career won’t be defined by the number of screens you design.

It will be defined by the number of people who make better decisions because you were there.

The best Product Designers don’t leave behind perfect interfaces.

They leave behind stronger teams.

Clearer thinking.

Better products.

And a culture that continues creating value long after they’ve moved on.

The first major turning point in my mindset didn’t come from a commercial product. It came from countless evenings dedicated to building and contributing to the UX community. Leading UX Space fundamentally changed how I thought about design. I discovered that teaching is one of the fastest ways to expose weaknesses in your own thinking. Every workshop, every mentoring session, every podcast discussion, and every article forced me to organize ideas that previously existed only as intuition. The moment you attempt to explain a complex concept to another designer, you immediately discover where your own mental models are incomplete.

Around that same period, I was fortunate enough to discover Object-Oriented UX, a framework that permanently changed the way I approached product design. Instead of immediately drawing user flows or jumping into wireframes, I learned to first identify entities, define their relationships, and construct information architecture before thinking about interfaces. That experience reinforced a philosophy that has guided nearly every decision I’ve made since: clarity is king, while unnecessary complexity is a liability. Creativity should be invested only where it creates unique value. Everywhere else, familiar and predictable experiences usually outperform cleverness.

That philosophy also reshaped my workflow. Design tools are invaluable for exploration, communication, and experimentation, but truly pixel-perfect experiences are often refined inside production code rather than static mockups. A Figma file can simulate interactions, but only real implementation reveals performance constraints, engineering realities, accessibility challenges, and countless micro-details that determine whether an experience genuinely feels polished.

Looking back, much of my professional growth didn’t come from high-profile product launches. It came from quiet relationships that accumulated over time. Collaborating with experienced product leaders, exchanging ideas with talented designers, and spending years mentoring through ADPList all taught me lessons that no design book could offer. Mentoring, in particular, introduced me to the importance of what many organizations call “glue work.” Writing documentation, improving collaboration, standardizing workflows, coaching teammates, and simply listening to someone’s challenges rarely produce portfolio-worthy visuals, yet these invisible contributions often determine whether an organization succeeds or struggles. They create the infrastructure that allows everyone else to perform better.

When I eventually decided to conclude my mentoring journey on ADPList and focus on new challenges, I realized something far more valuable than any individual project. Relationships built through generosity compound over time. Projects eventually end. Titles change. Companies evolve. Technology never stops moving. But trust continues to appreciate. No shortcut can replace years of consistently helping others.

Joining a Big Tech company in Singapore introduced me to an entirely different scale of product development. Designing AI-powered experiences for millions of users fundamentally changes your perspective. At that scale, even the smallest design decision can create significant ripple effects across an ecosystem. I quickly learned that legacy experiences are not simply outdated interfaces—they represent habits that users have developed over years. Improving those experiences requires far more than visual redesign. It demands empathy, careful migration strategies, and a deep understanding of behavioral change.

Working in AI also introduced an entirely new challenge. New models, capabilities, and technologies emerge almost weekly, making it incredibly tempting to chase innovation for its own sake. But leadership requires discipline. The responsibility of a Design Lead is not to pursue every technological breakthrough. It is to ensure that technology continues serving genuine human needs. AI has dramatically accelerated many aspects of the design process. It helps summarize research, generate concepts, create prototypes, and explore ideas faster than ever before. Yet none of those capabilities replace thoughtful judgment. Falling in love with technology instead of the problem remains one of the easiest mistakes any product team can make.

As my responsibilities expanded, I realized that leadership had very little to do with creating better interfaces. Success became increasingly dependent on alignment across Design, Product Management, and Engineering. The most productive meetings were rarely those where someone proved they were the smartest person in the room. Instead, they were the conversations where people openly admitted uncertainty, challenged assumptions respectfully, and worked together toward a shared understanding. Psychological safety became more valuable than certainty because clarity emerges when people feel comfortable questioning existing beliefs rather than defending them.

Looking back over fifteen years, I find that my philosophy has gradually become much simpler. In Vietnamese, there is a phrase I often remind myself of: “Vui vẻ là được rồi”—being happy is enough.

The technology industry constantly encourages people to chase the next promotion, the next product launch, the next innovation, or the next organizational milestone. It is remarkably easy to become consumed by metrics that constantly move beyond your control. Over time, I learned to invest my energy differently. I focus on the quality of my thinking, the sincerity with which I collaborate with others, and maintaining the curiosity that first brought me into design.

Eventually, every designer reaches a point where time becomes more valuable than recognition. Inner peace becomes more valuable than external validation. Knowing what you are willing to trade—and what you are not—becomes one of the most important professional decisions you will ever make.

If there is one lesson that connects every stage of my journey, from community building to global AI products, it is this: great design has never been about creating beautiful screens. It has always been about creating clarity, building trust, helping people make better decisions, and leaving every team stronger than you found it. The products we build will inevitably evolve. Technologies will continue changing. Entire industries will transform. But curiosity, humility, generosity, and continuous learning remain timeless advantages. Those are the experiences that truly compound over a lifetime.

And what I want to share isn’t the keynote, the new features, or the announcements that have dominated internet discourse over the past few days. I’m sure plenty of others will cover that ground extensively.

What I want to talk about is the place where it all happened.

Reflecting on my first time stepping inside, I wasn’t struck by awe.

I was struck by… the quiet!

It was an unexpected kind of stillness to encounter at the heart of one of the world’s most powerful tech giants.

No noise. No rush. No sense of a place racing to invent the future. It felt more like a park than a Big Tech headquarters. In a Silicon Valley obsessed with velocity, deadlines, and growth targets, Apple Park feels less like a corporate office and more like a sanctuary.

I’ve seen countless photos and videos of this place. But there is a massive difference between experiencing Apple Park through a screen and actually standing within it. As I walked beneath the trees, watched the light reflecting off the massive glass panes, or simply observed how people navigated the space, I began to understand why many call this more than just a campus. It is an idea manifested as architecture.

Perhaps what impressed me most wasn’t the sheer scale or the cost of construction. It was the feeling of standing inside the mindset of a person who fundamentally changed how billions of people interact with technology. I wasn’t just looking at a building; I was looking at how a rare, singular mind thought about humanity, technology, and the future.

Interestingly, Apple Park is no longer “new.” Steve Jobs announced the project in 2011. Construction began in 2013, and the first employees moved in during 2017. Nearly a decade has passed. In that time, the tech world has transformed almost entirely.

• AI has exploded.

• Hybrid work has become the norm.

• Many companies are questioning whether a physical office is even necessary anymore.

Yet, Apple Park doesn’t feel dated. That gave me pause.

Most tech HQs are built for current needs. This place feels like it was built for a much longer horizon. Perhaps the most telling indicator of that philosophy lies in a statistic that seems almost irrational: about 80% of the campus is dedicated to nature.

When I first heard that, my reaction was the same as many others: Why would a tech company dedicate so much land to trees?

But the more I walked the grounds, the more I realized this wasn’t just a landscaping decision. It was a manifesto. Apple Park isn’t trying to maximize floor space. It is creating room.

• Room for light.

• Room for nature.

• Room for space.

• Room to breathe.

• Room to walk.

• Room for human connection.

There is a beautiful paradox here. One of the most powerful tech companies on earth is putting immense effort into pulling people away from their screens.

The campus is filled with thousands of trees. Oak-lined paths. Orchards. Trails that compel you to slow down. As a Product Designer, I find this aspect more fascinating than the architecture itself. We talk about experience all the time:

• User journeys.

• Touchpoints.

• Emotion.

• Friction.

But Apple seems to view the physical environment as a product, too. An intentional experience. A system engineered to influence behavior. That explains why the building is a massive circle—not a collection of disconnected blocks or siloed offices, but a continuous structure designed to make people collide, see one another, and talk.

It’s a beautiful concept. Everything is constantly interconnected. Perhaps it’s just architecture, but it might also be how Apple wants people to perceive their organization.

However, Apple Park isn't perfect, and perhaps that is exactly why it is worth studying. The open-office plan was meant to foster collaboration, but not everyone performs best in an open environment.

• Some teams need quiet.

• Some need privacy.

• Sometimes you simply need to close a door to focus.

This got me thinking about design in general. We often fall in love with the pursuit of perfection:

• Pixel-perfect precision.

• Consistency.

• Systems.

• Flow.

But sometimes, the best outcome for the experience isn't perfection—it’s flexibility. Sometimes, compromise isn't a failure. It’s a sign of maturity.

People often call Apple Park a “spaceship.” To me, it feels more like a question.

If we had the chance to build a workplace from scratch today—in the age of AI, remote work, and constant change—how would we build it? Is the best workplace one that makes people more productive? Or is it one that makes them feel human, even when technology is present everywhere?

The area that struck me most wasn’t the ring itself, but the six-colored rainbow arch. In a campus defined by extreme minimalism—where every shape, material, and color is tightly controlled—the appearance of those colors felt distinct. It made me linger longer than I expected.

Something is fascinating about one of the world’s most future-oriented companies intentionally keeping an icon of its past in the center of its campus. I don’t view it as mere decoration. It feels like a reminder. That no matter how many times the company evolves, how many generations of products change, or how far technology advances, the story of where we came from is worth preserving.

And perhaps that is the detail I love most about Apple Park. Not because it’s more beautiful than the rest, but because amidst so much that has been optimized to the extreme, that rainbow section grounds the experience in humanity.

Branding, in this case, is no longer just on a screen or in a guideline. It has become a part of the physical space—something you can walk past, stop to look at, and naturally remember the history of a company. Years from now, the devices will change. Our workflows will be different. But I think people will still return to Apple Park. Đây không phải là một video hướng dẫn cách vẽ giao diện đẹp hơn, cũng không phải một danh sách các quy tắc thiết kế khô khan. Điều mình thích ở video này là cách Apple nói về thiết kế như một trách nhiệm đối với con người, chứ không đơn thuần là công việc tạo ra màn hình hay tính năng.

Tuy nhiên, mình cũng nhận thấy không phải ai cũng có đủ thời gian để xem hết video, và cũng không phải ai làm sản phẩm hay thiết kế đều cảm thấy thoải mái khi tiếp cận nội dung chuyên môn bằng tiếng Anh.

Vì vậy, mình dành thời gian xem lại, ghi chú, đối chiếu và biên soạn lại những ý chính trong video này bằng tiếng Việt.

Đây không phải bản dịch từng câu từng chữ. Thay vào đó, mình cố gắng diễn giải lại theo góc nhìn của một người đã làm sản phẩm nhiều năm, kết hợp với những trải nghiệm thực tế mình từng gặp trong quá trình nghiên cứu người dùng, thiết kế sản phẩm và làm việc cùng các đội ngũ phát triển.

Mục tiêu của bài viết không phải để thay thế video gốc, mà để giúp những ai chưa có điều kiện theo dõi toàn bộ nội dung bằng tiếng Anh vẫn có thể tiếp cận những tư duy thiết kế rất đáng suy ngẫm mà Apple đang chia sẻ.

Nếu bạn là Designer, Product Manager, Developer hoặc đơn giản là người quan tâm đến việc xây dựng những sản phẩm tốt hơn cho người dùng, mình hy vọng những ghi chép này sẽ giúp bạn tiết kiệm thời gian và mang lại thêm một vài góc nhìn hữu ích cho công việc hằng ngày.

Chúng ta bắt đầu nhé.

Một sản phẩm không thành công vì nó đẹp. Nó thành công vì giải quyết được điều mà người dùng thực sự quan tâm.

Mỗi tính năng chúng ta thêm vào đều lấy đi một thứ từ người dùng: thời gian để học, sự chú ý để hiểu và niềm tin để tiếp tục sử dụng. Đó là những tài sản rất đắt giá.

Vì vậy, thiết kế không chỉ là quyết định nên thêm gì. Quan trọng hơn, đó là quyết định điều gì không nên tồn tại.

Lần tới trước khi mở phần mềm thiết kế hay bắt đầu một sprint mới, hãy tự hỏi: “Nếu bỏ tính năng này đi, người dùng có thực sự thấy thiếu không?” Nếu câu trả lời là không, có lẽ nó chưa nên được xây dựng.

Thiết kế tốt luôn bắt đầu từ mục đích (Purpose)

Rất nhiều sản phẩm thất bại không phải vì đội ngũ thiếu năng lực. Họ thất bại vì quá bận giải quyết mọi thứ nên quên mất lý do ban đầu mình tồn tại.

Mỗi màn hình, mỗi luồng thao tác, mỗi tính năng đều cần trả lời được một câu hỏi rất đơn giản: “Nó đang giúp người dùng làm điều gì tốt hơn?”

Nếu không trả lời được câu hỏi đó, rất dễ rơi vào tình trạng làm cho sản phẩm ngày càng phức tạp nhưng giá trị mang lại ngày càng ít.

Người dùng không quan tâm bạn mất bao nhiêu tháng để xây dựng một tính năng. Họ chỉ quan tâm tính năng đó có giúp cuộc sống của họ dễ dàng hơn hay không.

Người dùng không muốn bị kiểm soát (Agency)

Không ai thích cảm giác bị ép phải đi theo một con đường duy nhất.

Trong sản phẩm cũng vậy.

Khi người dùng cảm thấy họ được lựa chọn, được chủ động và được quyền quyết định cách sử dụng sản phẩm theo cách riêng của mình, họ sẽ gắn bó hơn rất nhiều.

Nhưng tự do luôn đi kèm với sai sót. Người dùng sẽ bấm nhầm. Xóa nhầm. Gửi nhầm. Chọn nhầm. Đó không phải lỗi của họ. Đó là điều chắc chắn sẽ xảy ra.

Một sản phẩm trưởng thành không cố gắng ngăn mọi sai lầm. Nó giúp người dùng phục hồi sau sai lầm một cách dễ dàng.

Nút Undo đôi khi mang lại cảm giác an tâm hơn cả một tính năng phức tạp được đầu tư hàng tháng trời.

Niềm tin không đến từ những lời hứa (Responsibility)

Mình luôn thích một ví dụ rất đời thường.

Nếu một người lạ vừa gặp đã hỏi xin số điện thoại nhưng không giải thích lý do, đa phần chúng ta sẽ từ chối.

Thế nhưng rất nhiều ứng dụng lại làm điều tương tự. Vừa mở app đã xin quyền truy cập danh bạ. Xin vị trí. Xin camera. Xin thông báo.

Người dùng chưa hiểu ứng dụng làm gì nhưng đã bị yêu cầu trao đổi thông tin cá nhân. Niềm tin không được xây dựng bằng popup. Nó được xây dựng bằng sự minh bạch.

Hãy chỉ xin những gì thực sự cần. Hãy giải thích rõ tại sao cần nó. Và chỉ hỏi khi người dùng hiểu giá trị họ nhận lại.

Khi người dùng cảm thấy được tôn trọng, họ sẵn sàng chia sẻ nhiều hơn bạn nghĩ.

Đừng bắt người dùng học lại từ đầu (Familiarity)

Một trong những sai lầm phổ biến của designer là quá hào hứng với sự sáng tạo.

Sáng tạo là tốt.

Nhưng không phải lúc nào cũng cần phát minh lại bánh xe. Người dùng đã dành nhiều năm để học cách sử dụng các sản phẩm số. Họ hiểu biểu tượng thùng rác có nghĩa là xóa. Họ hiểu kính lúp là để tìm kiếm. Họ hiểu nút Play là để phát video.

Khi chúng ta thay đổi những quy ước quen thuộc chỉ để tạo sự khác biệt, chi phí học lại sẽ thuộc về người dùng.

Sự sáng tạo tốt nhất thường không phải là thứ khiến mọi người ngạc nhiên. Mà là thứ khiến họ cảm thấy quen thuộc đến mức gần như không cần suy nghĩ.

Một sản phẩm tốt phải thích nghi với cuộc sống thật (Flexibility)

Người dùng không sống bên trong wireframe.

Họ đang lái xe, đang chạy bộ, đang bế con, đang vội đến cuộc họp hoặc đang sử dụng điện thoại dưới trời nắng gắt.

Thiết kế chỉ thực sự tốt khi nó hiểu được những bối cảnh đó.

Cùng một người nhưng trong những hoàn cảnh khác nhau sẽ có nhu cầu khác nhau.

Đó là lý do tại sao thiết kế linh hoạt ngày càng trở nên quan trọng.

Cho người dùng tùy chỉnh giao diện.

Cho phép họ chọn cách làm việc phù hợp nhất.

Đừng cố gắng ép tất cả mọi người vào cùng một khuôn mẫu.

Bởi vì thực tế là không tồn tại một trải nghiệm hoàn hảo cho tất cả mọi người.

Đơn giản không có nghĩa là ít (Simplicity)

Đây có lẽ là hiểu lầm lớn nhất trong ngành thiết kế.

Nhiều người nghĩ đơn giản đồng nghĩa với tối giản.

Không phải.

Một giao diện chỉ có vài nút bấm nhưng khiến người dùng mất 5 phút để tìm ra cách sử dụng không hề đơn giản. Ngược lại, một giao diện có nhiều thông tin nhưng được tổ chức hợp lý vẫn có thể rất dễ hiểu.

Đơn giản là khi người dùng đạt được mục tiêu nhanh nhất với ít nỗ lực nhận thức nhất.

Nếu một thành phần không giúp họ hiểu hơn, quyết định tốt hơn hoặc hành động nhanh hơn, hãy cân nhắc loại bỏ nó.

Nhưng nếu một thành phần giúp họ tự tin hơn, dù giao diện có thêm một chút chi tiết, nó vẫn đáng để tồn tại.

Chi tiết nhỏ tạo nên cảm nhận lớn (Craft)

Người dùng có thể không nhận ra vì sao họ thích một sản phẩm. Nhưng họ luôn cảm nhận được.

• Một animation giật nhẹ.

• Một màn hình tải lâu hơn vài giây.

• Một icon bị lệch.

• Một layout vỡ khi xoay màn hình.

Tất cả đều gửi đi cùng một thông điệp: “Có vẻ như sản phẩm này chưa được chăm chút.”

Ngược lại, khi mọi thứ vận hành mượt mà, người dùng cảm thấy an tâm hơn. Họ tin tưởng hơn. Họ sẵn sàng gắn bó lâu hơn.

Đó là sức mạnh của sự tinh xảo. Không phải những thứ hào nhoáng. Mà là hàng trăm chi tiết nhỏ được làm đúng.

Điều người dùng nhớ không phải là giao diện (Delight)

Sau cùng, người dùng hiếm khi nhớ màu sắc hay bố cục chính xác của một sản phẩm.

Điều họ nhớ là cảm giác.

• Họ cảm thấy tự tin hay bối rối?

• Họ cảm thấy được giúp đỡ hay bị làm phiền?

• Họ cảm thấy thoải mái hay căng thẳng?

Đó mới là thứ quyết định liệu họ có quay lại hay không.

Sự thú vị trong thiết kế không đến từ animation lấp lánh hay hiệu ứng hào nhoáng. Nó xuất hiện khi mọi thứ hoạt động đúng cách, đúng thời điểm và đúng với mong đợi của con người.

Khi một sản phẩm được xây dựng bằng sự thấu hiểu, tôn trọng và chăm chút, niềm vui sẽ xuất hiện một cách tự nhiên.

Và đó mới là mục tiêu cuối cùng của thiết kế.

Thật ra, những bài viết An chia sẻ trên Substack chưa bao giờ được viết như một cuốn sách giáo khoa chuẩn chỉnh. Với An, đây giống như những mẩu ghi chú trong quá trình làm nghề — một ý nghĩ vừa lóe lên, một bài học rút ra sau một ngày làm việc, hay đôi khi chỉ là một cảm xúc rất nhỏ nhưng đáng nhớ. An chọn chia sẻ chúng đúng như cách mình trải qua: không đánh bóng, không “văn vẻ hóa”, chỉ là những câu chuyện thật từ người đang làm nghề.

Nếu có một điều gì đó khiến bạn dừng lại, gật đầu hay suy nghĩ thêm một chút, An rất muốn nghe. Để lại cho An một comment nhé — An tin rằng tụi mình có thể học được rất nhiều từ câu chuyện của nhau.

Tại một công ty Big Tech, vai trò này ngày càng quan trọng khi các đội ngũ sản phẩm muốn đưa AI vào trải nghiệm người dùng một cách thực tế, hiệu quả và có giá trị.

Vì sao cần AI Model Designer?

Có những lý do quan trọng khiến vị trí này trở nên cần thiết.

Mô hình AI mạnh, nhưng chưa tự hiểu ngữ cảnh sản phẩm

Dù các mô hình nền tảng hiện nay rất mạnh, chúng không tự động hiểu toàn bộ ngữ cảnh nội bộ của một công ty. Big Tech sở hữu nhiều hệ thống dữ liệu, workflow, sản phẩm và hành vi người dùng ở quy mô rất lớn — phần lớn trong số đó không tồn tại trong dữ liệu public. Điều đó dẫn đến một khoảng cách rõ ràng: Model tổng quát rất giỏi nhưng chưa tối ưu cho ngữ cảnh sản phẩm cụ thể. Output đôi khi đúng kỹ thuật nhưng chưa đúng trải nghiệm.

Vai trò của AI Model Designer là giúp thu hẹp khoảng cách đó: tìm cách khiến AI tạo ra kết quả hữu ích hơn, đúng mục tiêu hơn và phù hợp hơn với người dùng thực tế.

Xây dựng tư duy AI-first cho đội ngũ thiết kế

Big Tech có rất nhiều designer giỏi ở nhiều mảng sản phẩm khác nhau. Tuy nhiên, thiết kế trải nghiệm AI là một kỹ năng mới. Thiết kế cho AI khác xa thiết kế sản phẩm truyền thống.

Mô hình thiết kế truyền thống: designer tập trung vào thiết kế trải nghiệm và giao diện. Nhưng với AI product, điều quan trọng nhất lại nằm ở phần “trí thông minh” phía sau.

AI Model Designer như mình luôn phải làm việc để trả lời những câu hỏi:

• AI phản hồi thế nào?

• Có hiểu đúng ý người dùng không?

• Có ổn định không?

• Có nên góp ý với người dùng không?

• Có đang giúp người dùng tốt hơn hay đang khiến họ lười đi?

• Output có đáng tin không?

• Dữ liệu ngữ cảnh đã đúng chưa?

Và mỗi ngày, những yếu tố đó đều cần được kiểm chứng lại. Vì chính chúng giúp team design tạo ra những giải pháp không chỉ đẹp trên màn hình mà còn vận hành hiệu quả trong môi trường thực tế.

Một ngày làm việc của AI Model Designer

Bắt đầu bằng dữ liệu, không phải Figma

Ngày làm việc không nhất thiết bắt đầu bằng file thiết kế.

Thay vào đó, mình thường mở:

• Dashboard chất lượng AI responses

• User satisfaction metrics

• Query logs ẩn danh

• Failed prompts

• Tỷ lệ người dùng hỏi lại

• Tỷ lệ click vào source citations

Ví dụ với người dùng tìm: “Best laptop for architecture student”

AI trả lời chính xác, nhưng quá dài và khó so sánh.

AI Model Designer sẽ nhìn vấn đề dưới góc UX:

• User có đọc hết nổi không?

• Có thể chuyển thành comparison cards không?

• Có cần hỏi thêm budget trước không?

• Có cách nào giảm cognitive load?

Đây là điểm khác biệt lớn: họ đánh giá output như một trải nghiệm, không chỉ như một câu trả lời.

Làm việc với PM, Engineers và Researchers

Sau đó là các buổi họp/cập nhật để đồng bộ công việc cùng team liên chức năng:

• Product Manager

• ML Engineers

• UX Engineers

• User Researchers

• Trust & Safety

• Search ranking teams

Prototype hành vi AI

Đây là phần quan trọng nhất. Designer truyền thống prototype flow. AI Model Designer prototype behavior.

Ví dụ với travel planning. User hỏi: “5-day Tokyo trip under $1000”

Mình sẽ thử nhiều hướng:

Phiên bản A

Khi user hỏi, AI lập tức đưa lịch trình hoàn chỉnh luôn.

Ví dụ: “Plan trip Đà Nẵng 3 ngày” → AI trả ngay Day 1 / Day 2 / Day 3

Nhanh, tiện, ít bước.

Phiên bản B

AI chưa trả lời ngay, mà hỏi thêm để cá nhân hóa.

Ví dụ hỏi:

• Bạn đi mấy ngày?

• Ngân sách bao nhiêu?

• Thích nghỉ dưỡng hay khám phá?

Sau đó mới tạo lịch trình.

Chất lượng tốt hơn, cá nhân hóa hơn, nhưng mất thêm bước.

Phiên bản C

AI trình bày kết quả theo cấu trúc rõ ràng:

• Budget: chi phí dự kiến

• Lịch trình: đi đâu từng ngày

• Mẹo: giờ đẹp, tránh đông, món nên ăn

Dễ đọc, nhiều giá trị hơn.

Phiên bản D

Thay vì text dài, AI hiển thị kiểu visual timeline:

Day 1

• 08:00 Breakfast

• 10:00 Beach

• 14:00 Hotel check-in

• 18:00 Dinner

Trực quan, dễ scan, UX tốt hơn.

Have Lunch nhưng đôi khi vẫn nói chuyện về AI

Ở môi trường như công ty mình, bữa trưa thường cũng là nơi chia sẻ ý tưởng.

Chủ đề có thể là:

• Gemini mới có khả năng gì

• Multi-modal search sẽ thay đổi UX ra sao

• Tương lai của query box có còn tồn tại không

• Search result page sẽ biến thành assistant interface?

AI Model Designer thường là người rất tò mò vì AI thay đổi quá nhanh.

Thiết kế layout cho nội dung do AI sinh ra

AI output không cố định như web page truyền thống.

Có lúc là:

• List

• Summary

• Comparison

• Table

• Timeline

• Recommendation set

• Step-by-step plan

Vì vậy Model AI Designer phải xây dựng giao diện linh hoạt:

• Scanability: Người dùng nhìn 3 giây có hiểu không?

• Trust: Trích dẫn đặt ở đâu để đáng tin mà không rối?

• Continuation: Nút hỏi tiếp đặt ở đâu hợp lý?

• Mobile-first: Trên điện thoại có dễ dùng không?

• Dynamic layout system: Một hệ thống UI chịu được hàng triệu loại query khác nhau.

Đây là bài toán thiết kế ở cấp độ hệ thống, không chỉ một màn hình.

Review với Engineering để ship thực tế

Ý tưởng đẹp chưa đủ.

AI product phải:

• Nhanh

• Chính xác

• Build được

• Scale được

Designer và engineers tụi mình sẽ bàn:

1. Animation này có làm chậm render không?

Designer muốn thêm animation (fade in, loading motion, card slide...). Engineer sẽ xem animation đó có làm app/web render chậm không.

• Render = quá trình hiển thị UI lên màn hình

• Nếu animation nặng → lag, drop frame

Đây là sự cân bằng giữa đẹp và performance.

2. Streaming response nên hiện từng phần thế nào?

AI thường trả lời theo kiểu từng dòng xuất hiện dần (streaming), không đợi xong hết mới show.

Chúng tôi sẽ bàn:

• Hiện từng chữ?

• Từng câu?

• Từng block?

• Có typing indicator không?

• Có scroll auto không?

Đây là UX của AI chat.

3. Card động có ảnh hưởng đến latency không?

Card động = UI component thay đổi theo dữ liệu AI:

Ví dụ:

• Suggestion cards

• Product cards

• Expandable cards

Latency = độ trễ phản hồi. Nếu card phải load nhiều data / ảnh / animation → phản hồi chậm hơn.

Designer + Engineer phải tối ưu.

4. Citation expand kiểu nào mượt nhất?

Citation = nguồn tham khảo, link nguồn, footnote.

Expand = khi user bấm vào citation thì mở ra thế nào:

• Popup?

• Side panel?

• Accordion?

• Inline expand?

“Mượt nhất” = nhanh, dễ đọc, không giật lag, không làm mất flow đọc.

Rất quan trọng trong AI products như Gemini, etc.

Một truth rất rõ trong AI product: UX đẹp nhưng chậm = UX tệ.

Nên AI Model Designer phải cân bằng:

• Beauty

• Speed

• Accuracy

• Trust

• Feasibility

Lên chiến lược sản phẩm

Ở cấp Staff (như mình) trở lên, không chỉ thiết kế feature.

Chúng mình định hình tương lai của sản phẩm.

Ví dụ trình bày với cấp trên:

• Search nên là answer engine hay planning assistant?

• Query box tương lai có còn là ô tìm kiếm?

• Conversational memory có nên trở thành mặc định?

• Citation transparency có phải là lợi thế cạnh tranh?

Đây là nơi AI Model Designer ảnh hưởng đến roadmap, không chỉ mockup.

Tạo clarity từ vấn đề mơ hồ

Đây là kỹ năng mô tả rất rõ:

Take problems and create clarity through design and prototyping.

Ví dụ PM nói:

Chúng ta nên tận dụng khả năng reasoning mới của model.

Câu này rất mơ hồ.

AI Model Designer sẽ biến nó thành:

Opportunity

• Planning complex tasks

• Compare decisions

• Multi-step learning

• Research assistant

Prototype

• College Choser AI

• Budget planner AI

• Vacation builder AI

Metrics

• Completion rate

• Follow-up rate

• Satisfaction

• Return usage

Đó là biến sự mơ hồ thành hướng đi rõ ràng.

Kết thúc ngày, nhưng AI vẫn tiếp tục chạy

Khi mình kết thúc ngày làm việc, hệ thống vẫn tiếp tục:

• Thu thập query mới

• Sinh lỗi mới

• Tạo hành vi mới

• Bộc lộ vấn đề mới

Ngày mai sẽ có thêm insight mới để tiếp tục cải tiến.

Điều khiến công việc này thú vị

AI Model Designer không chỉ thiết kế:

• Screens

• Buttons

• Flows

Mà còn thiết kế:

• Hành vi của AI

• Cách AI giao tiếp

• Cách AI tạo niềm tin

• Cách AI sửa sai

• Cách AI giúp con người ra quyết định

Bạn muốn bước vào lĩnh vực này?

Nếu bạn là designer và muốn chuyển sang làm sản phẩm AI, hãy học ít nhất những điều sau:

• Prompt thực sự là gì?

• Context window ảnh hưởng thế nào?

• Tool calling hoạt động ra sao?

• RAG là gì?

• Eval Set là gì?

• Model fail theo Pattern nào?

• Latency ảnh hưởng đến UX ra sao?

Mình đã đi qua khá nhiều “làn sóng”: responsive web, mobile-first, design system, Lean UX, growth, data-driven… Mỗi lần công nghệ thay đổi, cách làm việc cũng thay đổi theo. Nhưng có một thứ gần như luôn giữ nguyên: mình vẫn hiểu và kiểm soát được cách hệ thống vận hành.

Dù sản phẩm có phức tạp thế nào, cuối cùng nó vẫn là logic rõ ràng. Người dùng bấm A thì hệ thống làm B. Data ở trạng thái X thì giao diện hiển thị Y.

Mình có thể vẽ flowchart. Có thể liệt kê edge case. Có thể bóc tách từng nhánh rẽ và kiểm soát gần như toàn bộ hành vi của sản phẩm.

Rồi AI xuất hiện.

Và lần đầu tiên trong quá trình làm nghề, mình cảm thấy mình đang thiết kế một thứ mà mình không thực sự kiểm soát được.

Lúc bắt đầu làm AI feature, mình tiếp cận nó giống hệt những dự án trước:

• Xác định use case

• Map user flow

Nghe rất quen.

Nhưng chỉ sau một thời gian ngắn, mình nhận ra có gì đó khác hẳn.

• Model không trả lời giống nhau mỗi lần.

• Output không cố định.

• Hệ thống có xu hướng hành xử theo một cách nào đó, chứ không còn chắc chắn tuyệt đối.

Điều này chạm vào một niềm tin mình mang suốt nhiều năm: Designer có thể thiết kế cách hệ thống hoạt động. Còn với AI, “cách nó hoạt động” phần lớn nằm trong model weights. Và đó không phải là vùng mà designer truyền thống được đào tạo để bước vào.

Mình nhận ra mình có hai lựa chọn:

1. Ở lại tầng UI, làm cho output của model trông đẹp và dễ dùng hơn

2. Hoặc đi sâu hơn: hiểu prompt, hiểu eval, hiểu giới hạn thực sự của model

Mình chọn cách thứ hai. Và từ đó, mình hiểu ra một điều: AI không chỉ thay đổi sản phẩm. Nó thay đổi vai trò của designer.

Có một buổi review mình vẫn nhớ rất rõ.

Team engineering demo một AI feature. Output nhìn rất ấn tượng. Cả team bắt đầu bàn xem nên thiết kế giao diện thế nào cho “xịn” hơn.

Nhưng khi mình tự ngồi test kỹ hơn, mình thấy một bức tranh khác: Model rất tốt trong kịch bản hoàn hảo. Nhưng khá mong manh khi người dùng lệch khỏi đường ray.

Nếu mình chỉ tập trung vào polish UI, mình có thể làm sản phẩm trông rất chuyên nghiệp. Nhưng nó không thực sự đáng tin.

Và mình nhận ra: Trong AI product, vấn đề không nằm ở việc nó có đẹp hay không. Vấn đề nằm ở stability, ở behavior, ở failure mode.

Từ thời điểm đó, mình bắt đầu dành nhiều thời gian hơn cho những thứ trước đây mình nghĩ là “việc của engineer”:

• Phân tích prompt structure

• Đẩy model tới giới hạn để xem nó gãy ở đâu

• Viết test case

• Thảo luận về failure rate chấp nhận được

Đó là một sự dịch chuyển khá lớn trong cách mình làm việc.

Trước đây mình tối ưu:

• Clarity

• Hierarchy

• Interaction

• Flow

Bây giờ mình tối ưu:

• Feedback loop có nhanh đủ không

• Hành vi có ổn định qua nhiều phiên bản không

• Có cơ chế phát hiện regression không

• Model này có nên làm việc này không

Trước đây mình hỏi: “UI này có trực quan không?”

Bây giờ mình hỏi:

• “Model có thực sự phù hợp với task này không?”

• “Failure rate bao nhiêu là chấp nhận được?”

• “Chúng ta có đang dùng giao diện đẹp để che giấu sự thiếu ổn định bên dưới không?”

Câu hỏi đã khác đi hoàn toàn.

Sau 15 năm, mình không nghĩ design đang chết.

Mình nghĩ design đang bị đẩy lên một tầng cao hơn và cũng khó hơn.

AI đang kéo phần “how it works” ra khỏi vùng kiểm soát truyền thống của designer. Và nó buộc chúng ta phải tự hỏi: Mình có sẵn sàng bước vào vùng mơ hồ đó không?
Hay mình sẽ ở lại lớp giao diện — nơi mọi thứ vẫn quen thuộc và an toàn?

Phần tiếp theo của hành trình này là những gì mình rút ra khi làm AI product — không phải như một người quan sát, mà như một designer buộc phải tiến hóa nếu không muốn bị bỏ lại phía sau.

* Trong AI product, “eval” là cách mình đo xem model đang hoạt động tốt hay không và có bị tệ đi sau mỗi lần thay đổi hay không.

Vì AI không deterministic (không phải bấm A ra đúng B 100%), nên mình không thể chỉ test 1–2 case rồi tin tưởng. Mình cần một hệ thống kiểm tra có cấu trúc.

An chọn chia sẻ chúng đúng như cách mình trải qua: không đánh bóng, không “văn vẻ hóa”, chỉ là những câu chuyện thật từ người đang làm nghề.

“Đàn anh” từng nói với mình: “Mentorship giống như việc bạn cầm một ngọn nến, rồi dùng nó để thắp sáng thêm những ngọn nến khác”. Nhưng sau một thời gian đồng hành cùng các bạn mentee trên ADPList, mình nhận ra một điều thú vị hơn thế: Chính những ngọn nến mà mình đi thắp ấy, đôi khi lại “sốc vác” ngược lại mình vào những ngày mệt mỏi và muốn dừng lại nhất.

Hôm nay, ngồi nhìn lại danh sách những buổi hẹn đã qua, mình thấy tràn ngập một sự biết ơn. Mình nhớ như in cái cảm giác háo hức ngày đầu tiên đến với ADPlist của Felix. Lúc đó, mình chỉ đơn giản nghĩ rằng mình sẽ là người dẫn đường. Nhưng không, các bạn – những Mentee dễ thương – mới chính là những người đã dẫn mình đi qua những cung bậc cảm xúc của nghề Design.

Những mảnh ghép lấp lánh...

Mình nhớ Anh Nguyen – một người làm Customer Experience nhưng lại mang trong mình ngọn lửa rực cháy với trải nghiệm người dùng. Buổi trò chuyện hôm ấy không chỉ là về UX, mà là về sự can đảm để bước ra khỏi vùng an toàn. Hay là Phuong Nguyen, cô gái nhỏ với năng lượng tích cực khiến mình phải tự mỉm cười suốt cả buổi. Nhìn thấy Phương “vỡ” ra được hướng đi mới cho sự nghiệp, mình cảm thấy niềm vui đó còn lớn hơn cả khi bản thân mình đạt được một cột mốc nào đó.

Rồi mình lại nghĩ về Vinh An. An nhắc mình nhớ về giá trị của việc “lắng nghe”. Giữa một thế giới luôn vội vã nói, An chọn cách lắng nghe sâu sắc để rồi tự mình gỡ bỏ những lớp sương mù của sự mơ hồ. Và không thể không nhắc đến Vy Vo – người “mở hàng” đầu tiên của mình trên nền tảng. Vy đến với những bài toán khó nhưng lại đón nhận lời giải bằng một sự cầu tiến và chân thành.

Mỗi bạn là một câu chuyện, một màu sắc riêng biệt. Các bạn khiến mình nhận ra rằng Design không chỉ là vẽ ra những giao diện đẹp, mà còn là cách chúng ta kết nối, thấu hiểu và cùng nhau tốt đẹp hơn mỗi ngày.

Một trạm dừng chân để “lớn” theo cách khác

Người ta hay nói “bận rộn” là một rào cản, nhưng với mình, sự bận rộn hiện tại là một dấu hiệu của sự trưởng thành. Mình nhận thấy bản thân đang bước vào một chương mới, nơi những dự án và mục tiêu cá nhân đòi hỏi sự tập trung trọn vẹn hơn. Và quan trọng hơn cả, mình cảm thấy “chiếc áo” ADPList hiện tại đã vừa vặn hoàn thành sứ mệnh của nó đối với mình. Đã đến lúc Annie cần một không gian khác, một cách kết nối khác — có thể là riêng tư hơn, sâu lắng hơn và mang tính “thủ công” hơn một chút.

Dừng lại không có nghĩa là ngừng chia sẻ. Chỉ là mình chọn cách tạm biệt chiếc nút “Book a session” để đổi lấy những cuộc trò chuyện ngẫu hứng ở nơi nào đó, hoặc những dòng tin nhắn tâm tình không bị giới hạn bởi thời gian của một nền tảng.

Mình khép lại hành trình tại đây với nụ cười thật tươi và lòng biết ơn sâu sắc. Thế giới này nhỏ lắm, chỉ cần chúng ta vẫn luôn nỗ lực và tử tế với nghề, chắc chắn sẽ còn gặp lại nhau ở những đỉnh núi khác cao hơn.

A senior once told me, “Mentorship is like using your candle to light others.” But after my time on ADPList, I realized something even better. Those same candles I tried to light were the ones that carried me through my most tired days. They kept me going when I felt like stopping.

Looking back at my session history today, my heart is full of gratitude. I still remember the excitement of joining the community built by Felix Lee. Back then, I simply thought I would be the guide. I was wrong. My mentees were the ones who led me through the true emotions of the Design world.

The bright sparks along the way...

I remember Anh Nguyen, a CX professional with a burning fire for UX. Our talk wasn’t just about design; it was about the courage to step out of one’s comfort zone.

Then there’s Phuong Nguyen, whose positive energy made me smile the whole time. Seeing her find a new direction for her career felt like a bigger win than any of my own milestones.

Vinh An reminded me of the power of “listening.” In a world that is always in a hurry to speak, An chose to listen deeply to clear away the fog of confusion.

And I can’t forget Vy Vo, my very first mentee on the platform. She brought me tough problems, but faced them with such honesty and a strong will to learn.

Each of you is a unique story. You made me realize that Design is not just about drawing beautiful interfaces. It is about how we connect, understand, and grow better together every day.

A stop to “grow” in a different way

People often say being “busy” is a barrier. But to me, my current busyness is a sign of growth. I am entering a new chapter that requires my full focus. I feel like my “ADPList shirt” fits perfectly, and it has completed its mission for now. It is time for me to find a different way to connect — perhaps something more personal, quiet, and “handmade.”

Saying goodbye to the “Book a session” button doesn’t mean I will stop sharing. I am simply trading it for spontaneous coffee chats or heartfelt messages that aren’t limited by a platform’s timer.
