The crowd roared, Quentin looked toward the bench, Elio was on his feet. His expression held fear. Quentin raised one hand to show he was fine, Elio sat slowly.

The gesture belonged only to them. By the final minutes, the university team led comfortably. Quentin could have eased his pace. Instead, he continued until the whistle ended the game. His body burned.

The compression shirt adhered to him from collar to waistband. Sweat had gathered beneath every layer of clothing. His hair was wet. Salt touched his lips.

As he walked toward the locker room, he passed Elio.

Their shoulders nearly brushed. Quentin smelled soap on him. Elio inhaled as Quentin moved past.

The sound was small. Quentin heard it anyway.

The locker room erupted in celebration. The players stripped, showered, shouted, and dressed for the night. Quentin remained among them, but his attention never left Elio’s movements.

Elio collected clothing.He avoided Quentin’s locker. That avoidance was more revealing than approach.

Quentin showered quickly, then returned with a towel around his waist. His skin remained hot despite the water. Steam moved behind him as he crossed toward his locker.

Elio glanced at him. His gaze fell for a fraction of a second toward Quentin’s chest.

Quentin opened the locker. The decision had already been made.

He dressed in clean clothes, leaving the used uniform on the bench. The jersey. The shorts. The soaked compression shirt. And beneath them, hidden until the other players had gone, the black jockstrap he had worn throughout the match.

Quentin waited.

One by one, the others left, Mathieu asked whether he was coming to the bar.

“Later.”

“You said that last time.”

“My hip hurts.”

Mathieu looked toward the showers. “Get Elio to kiss it better.” A few players laughed.

Elio stood near the laundry bag, his face blank, Quentin’s body went still. “Enough,” he said.

The word was not loud.

It did not need to be. The room quieted. Mathieu raised both hands. “Relax.” “I said enough.” Something in Quentin’s voice ended the joke.

Mathieu looked away first. The others finished dressing and left with him.

The door closed.

Silence expanded through the locker room. Elio continued gathering towels.

“You didn’t have to do that,” he said.

“Yes, I did.”

“They’ll think it means something.”

Quentin looked at him.

“Maybe it does.”

Elio froze.

Quentin could see the question rise, but fear held it back. He picked up his bag.

“My hip is fine.”

Elio stared at him. Quentin walked toward the exit, then stopped near the door.

“Don’t stay too late.”

Elio swallowed. “I won’t.”

Quentin left. He did not go far.

Beyond the locker room, the corridor turned toward the equipment office. A recessed doorway offered shadow and a clear view of anyone leaving.

Quentin stood there and waited.

His heart beat harder than it had during the final quarter. Inside the locker room, Elio began his routine.

The familiar sounds reached Quentin through the door. Bottles collected into plastic. Benches wiped. Locker doors checked. Laundry bags opened.

Quentin imagined each movement. He knew the moment Elio reached his clothes because the room fell silent. No fabric shifted. No cart rolled. Nothing. Quentin closed his eyes.

This was the threshold.

Until now, his clothing had been forgotten, or allowed to appear forgotten. Elio could preserve the illusion of chance. Quentin could preserve it too.

Tonight would change that. The jockstrap had been placed too carefully.

The evidence on it was too intimate.

Elio would understand that someone had chosen the garment, chosen its condition, and chosen exactly where he would find it.

The question was whether he would accept it.

Elio stood over Quentin’s clothes without touching them.

The jersey lay on top of the pile, number twelve visible beneath the fluorescent light. The fabric was almost black with sweat along the chest. The shorts beneath it were damp and twisted, one leg turned partially inside out.

This alone would have been enough.

Quentin’s scent had already filled the air around the bench.

Elio could recognize it now.

The knowledge frightened him.

He had begun to distinguish Quentin from the others through fabric alone. The warmer mineral note of his sweat. The deep musk left in compression material after a demanding game. The faint trace of the soap he used, clean and almost woody beneath everything rawer.

Elio’s body responded before he allowed himself to move. His pulse thickened. Heat gathered beneath his clothes. He looked toward the locker room door.

Nobody entered.

He reached for the jersey. It was still warm. The sensation moved through his fingertips and into his chest. He lifted it carefully, holding the shoulders as though Quentin might somehow remain inside it.

The collar rose toward his face. Elio stopped. Quentin had spoken to him differently that week.

Elio lowered the jersey.

He no longer trusted the privacy of the room.

Perhaps Quentin knew.

Perhaps the shirt that vanished had not gone unnoticed. Perhaps every later garment had been a test.

Fear entered him so sharply that he placed the jersey inside the laundry bag at once.

He should finish his work.

He should wash everything.

He should return the missing compression shirt, folded and clean, and let the secret die before it destroyed the small place he had built within the team.

Elio reached for the shorts.

Something beneath them caught against the fabric.

He pulled them free.

The jockstrap fell onto the bench.

Elio stopped breathing.

Black elastic.

Dark fabric.

Quentin’s number printed in small white characters along the waistband.

It had not been discarded carelessly.

The straps had been arranged flat. The pouch faced upward. One side of the waistband had been folded inward, as though marked for attention.

Elio stared.

The garment carried the whole match in it. Sweat had darkened the material. Heat still lingered in the elastic. Along the front, near the center, a pale dried mark interrupted the black fabric.

Elio’s knees weakened. He gripped the bench.
