Now think about the last time you took a medication. You probably checked the dosage. Maybe you read the side effects. You would not take a pill without at least a vague understanding of what it was doing to your body.

We hold a tablet to a higher standard than we hold the products we press into our skin every single morning. And the more you understand about how skin actually works, the stranger that becomes.

The skin is not a wall. This is perhaps the most important thing most people do not know about their own bodies. It is not a sealed surface that keeps the outside world out. It is a permeable, living, breathing organ, and it absorbs what we put on it. This is not a fringe theory or a cause for panic. It is the same mechanism that medicine has relied on for decades. This might have been a reasonable system when cosmetics meant lipstick and cold cream. It is a much harder position to defend now.

Modern cosmetic formulations are biochemically sophisticated in ways that would have been unrecognizable a generation ago. Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, is now a staple ingredient in drugstore serums. It works by increasing cell turnover and stimulating collagen production — the same mechanism as tretinoin, a prescription retinoid. In high doses, vitamin A derivatives are teratogenic, meaning they can cause birth defects. Retinol is sold freely, in varying concentrations, with no prescription required and no standardized guidance on safe usage. Certain chemical sunscreen filters, including oxybenzone and avobenzone, have been detected in the bloodstream after topical application, at concentrations that exceed the FDA’s threshold for waiving further safety studies. Peptides, acids, and growth factors that actively alter skin biology are formulated into products that sit beside shampoo on the same shelf, governed by the same regulatory framework as shampoo.

These are not just creams anymore. They are biochemically active products being sold with the oversight of a moisturizer.

I want to be clear about why I find this so important, and it is not because I am afraid of skincare. I am fascinated by it. Cosmetic chemistry is the field I want to spend my life in, developing products that are both effective and genuinely understood. That is exactly why the gap between what these formulations are capable of and how rigorously we study them matters to me. The science of what happens at the skin barrier, how ingredients interact, what gets absorbed and what doesn’t — it is genuinely extraordinary. It deserves to be treated that way. Not with fear, but with the same intellectual seriousness we give to any other field of chemistry that touches the human body.

Because that is what this is. Chemistry that touches the human body.

You do not have to throw out your moisturizer. You do not have to be afraid of your serum. But the next time you reach for something without reading the label, consider that the science exists. The research is there. The questions have answers. We have just collectively decided that skincare is not the kind of thing that requires us to ask them.

It is time we started disagreeing with that.

We are living through the death of the face.

The human face has 43 muscles, every single one of them designed to do something specific. To pull the corner of a mouth upward in genuine surprise. To crease the skin around the eyes when the laughter is real. To furrow, to tremble, to contort — to tell the truth about what is happening inside. Botox paralyzes these muscles deliberately. And we have arrived at a cultural moment where the people paid to emote for a living, the actors, the performers, the storytellers, have voluntarily surrendered the very instrument of their craft.

Nowhere is this more visible than in historical films and period pieces. A woman in a Victorian corset with pillow lips and a motionless brow. A warrior in ancient Rome with the jawline of someone who has recently visited a clinic in Beverly Hills. These faces do not belong to their worlds and the audience feels it, even when they cannot articulate why. The anachronism is not in the costume or the set design. It is in the face. A face that has been so thoroughly edited it can no longer pretend to belong to any time but right now, and barely even that.

And right now, every face is starting to look the same.

There is a term for it: the Instagram face. A specific arrangement of features that the algorithm rewards and the beauty industry supplies. High cheekbones. A small, refined nose. Full lips. A tight jawline. Enormous, luminous eyes. It does not belong to any single ethnicity or culture. It was assembled from filtered photographs and filler appointments and surgical procedures, and it is now reproduced endlessly across social media, red carpets, and reality television. A generation of women are reshaping themselves toward a face that was never real to begin with, chasing an ideal that exists nowhere in nature and everywhere online.

The question worth asking is where this face came from. Who built it and for whom.

Beauty standards have always been constructed, always been political, always served someone’s interests more than the women who were asked to meet them. But this particular standard demands something more specific than beauty. It demands youth. Not the vitality that comes with health, not the radiance that comes with joy, but the precise, unlined, unfinished features of early adolescence. Large eyes. A small nose. Plump lips. Skin without a single trace of experience. A face that has not aged because it has not yet lived. The filler epidemic did not create this preference. It simply made it purchasable.

Society has always rewarded women who look young and punished women who do not. But we rarely ask why youth is the standard, or whose desire it was originally designed to satisfy. The beauty industry sells these procedures as empowerment, as self expression, as taking control. And perhaps for some women that is genuinely true. But systems do not emerge from nothing. The insistence that women remain small faced and smooth skinned and perpetually unaged was not built by women for themselves. It was built around a male gaze that finds the features of girlhood more palatable than the features of a woman who has fully arrived.

The cost of all this is greater than we tend to acknowledge.

Botox does not only freeze the face. Research suggests it also dulls emotional experience from the inside. The brain uses feedback from facial muscles to help process feeling — when those muscles are paralyzed, the emotional signal weakens. We are not just changing how women look. We are potentially changing how they feel, how they connect, how they move through the world. Expression is not vanity. It is the oldest language we have. It is how humans recognize each other across a room, how we signal safety and sorrow and joy without a single word. And we are watching it be quietly, expensively erased.

So who told her she needed fixing?

Someone did. Someone always does. And until we start asking who, and why, and what they had to gain from the answer, we will keep watching faces disappear — one appointment at a time.

And that is exactly what makes it so hard to watch.

Somewhere in the last few years, something shifted. Sephora stores started filling up with girls who hadn’t yet reached high school, confidently loading baskets with products designed for women twice their age. Retinol. Glycolic acid. Eye creams targeting wrinkles they do not have. Peptide serums for skin that is still, biologically, at its peak. A new word entered the parenting vocabulary: the Sephora kid. And nobody quite knew how it happened.

But it didn’t come from nowhere.

Social media, particularly TikTok, created an entirely new category of influence: the skinfluencer. Teenagers and young women building audiences around elaborate routines, ingredient knowledge, and the quiet, persistent message that your skin is a problem to be solved. The algorithm, designed to keep eyes on screens as long as possible, fed this content to younger and younger viewers. A ten year old watching one skincare video would be served another, and another, until her entire feed was a tutorial in everything wrong with her face.

But it is worth pausing here, because not every little girl in Sephora is there because she hates her face. Some of them, especially the younger ones, are there because they are enchanted. Because skincare YouTube is colorful and satisfying and the girls in those videos seem glamorous and grown. Because little girls have always looked up to older ones, wanting to try on their world before it fully arrives. There is something almost tender about it — the same instinct that once had us playing with toy makeup sets and pretending to be our mothers. Now it just has a TikTok account and a Drunk Elephant budget.

The aspiration is innocent. The products are not.

Because somewhere between wanting to be like your favourite GRWM creator and actually using her routine, something goes wrong. The line between play and pressure blurs. And for older girls especially, the algorithm makes sure it blurs in one direction — toward the message that your skin, as it is, is not enough. This is where the language shifts from wonder to worry. From “I want to be like her” to “what is wrong with me.” And preteens are uniquely vulnerable to that shift. Psychologically, early adolescence is the most fragile period for identity formation. It is the age when belonging feels like survival, when the desperate need to fit in overrides almost everything else. Beauty has always been a language girls use to find their place in a group. Social media simply handed them a much louder, much more expensive version of that language. The industry didn’t invent insecurity in young girls. It just discovered it could be monetized earlier than anyone had tried before.

Here is where it stops being just a cultural issue and becomes a medical one.

Young skin does not need anti-aging products. It does not need them because it is not aging. Skin in early adolescence is still developing, its barrier still forming, its natural processes still regulating themselves. Retinol, one of the most popular ingredients in these routines, is a powerful compound that increases cell turnover and can cause significant irritation even in adult skin when used incorrectly. In a twelve year old, it can disrupt the skin barrier entirely, causing inflammation, sensitivity, and in some cases long term damage. Dermatologists are now regularly seeing preteen patients presenting with redness, peeling, and compromised skin, not from neglect, but from too many products, too strong, too soon. The irony is devastating: in trying to protect their skin, these girls are harming it.

And the brands know. They have always known. The marketing is not accidental, the influencer partnerships are not coincidental, and the packaging designed to look appealing to a young audience is not a mistake. There is no warning label that says this was not made for you. There is no age guidance on a retinol serum. There is just a pretty bottle and a glowing review from someone who looks young and perfect, which is precisely the point.

So let’s go back to the girl in Sephora.

She is not the problem. She is a twelve year old trying to navigate a world that has been telling her, through every screen and every algorithm and every carefully placed advertisement, that her face needs work. She is doing the only logical thing a child can do with that message: she is trying to fix it.

What she deserves is someone telling her the truth. That her skin, at twelve, is not something to be corrected. That the fine lines she is already afraid of do not exist. That the best thing she can do for her face right now is wash it gently, wear sunscreen, and go outside.

She deserves the freedom to just have skin.

And if I am being honest, so do I. I am in high school. I know what retinol is actually for. I know the difference between what my skin needs and what an algorithm decided I should want at eleven o’clock on a Tuesday night. And I still find myself adding things to my cart I do not need, chasing a version of my skin I saw on a screen. If it works on me, knowing what I know, imagine what it does to a twelve year old who doesn’t yet have the tools to question it.

That is not a personal failing. That is a very well built machine.

Now close your eyes and picture a Gothic cathedral. The way the stone reaches upward like it is trying to touch something. The colors fracturing through stained glass onto cold floors. Or an Ottoman mosque, its walls covered in tiles so intricate that craftsmen spent entire lifetimes on a single room. Or a Victorian dress, layered and structured and alive with detail. These were not just things. They were declarations. They said: this matters. We made this with intention.

Somewhere between then and now, we stopped saying that.

For most of human history, beauty was not considered a luxury. It was a responsibility. The Baroque era gave us ceilings so ornate they felt like a second sky. Art Nouveau wrapped iron staircases in vines and flowers, turning even subway stations into something worth looking at. The Renaissance treated fabric the way we now treat fine art. Every era, in its own way, believed that the world deserved to be adorned.

Then came the wars. After the devastation of two World Wars, cities needed to be rebuilt quickly and cheaply, and architects began prioritizing function over form. Ornament was expensive. Ornament was slow. And so a new philosophy emerged. Le Corbusier declared that a house was “a machine for living in.” Ludwig Mies van der Rohe insisted that “less is more.” What had once been a radical idea slowly became the only idea, and minimalism stopped being one aesthetic choice among many. It became a moral standard. Flat surfaces and neutral colors were no longer just design preferences. They were signs of sophistication.

And corporations noticed. Minimalism is cheaper to produce, easier to scale, and inoffensive enough to sell to everyone. Bland became a business strategy.

But here is what nobody talks about. Our brains were not designed for blank walls and empty corridors. Research shows that architectural design deeply impacts mood, physiology, and even creativity. The geometry of a room, its colors, its curves and textures, all of it registers in the brain whether we are aware of it or not. We do not just see our environments. We feel them. And when there is nothing to feel, something quietly dims inside us.

There is a word for what happens when a place has been drained of meaning: alienation. We move through spaces that were designed to be efficient, not human. We live in apartments that look like templates. We work in offices that look like each other. And we scroll through feeds full of the same beige interiors, the same sans-serif fonts, the same aesthetic that signals calm but somehow produces emptiness.

Beauty was once how humans said this matters. It was how they marked the sacred, the communal, the worth remembering.

So what are we saying now?

The science behind needing to fit in.

You’re standing in a crowded room, wearing what everyone else is wearing, laughing at what everyone else is laughing at, nodding along to opinions you’re not sure you actually hold. And the strange part? It feels comfortable. It feels safe. It feels almost like belonging.

But does it?

Somewhere between childhood, when we wore what our mothers picked out without a second thought, and now, we made a quiet, almost invisible decision. To sand down the edges. To shrink into the shape the room needed us to be. The question nobody asks is: why?

The answer, it turns out, is not weakness. It’s neuroscience.

In the 1950s, psychologist Solomon Asch ran a deceptively simple experiment. He showed participants two lines and asked which one was longer. The answer was obvious. But when actors in the room deliberately chose the wrong answer, 37% of real participants went along with them, denying what their own eyes could clearly see. Not because they were foolish. But because the brain, faced with social disagreement, does something extraordinary: it doubts itself.

And there’s a reward for going along. When we conform, our brains release oxytocin, the same chemical behind love, trust, and connection. Belonging doesn’t just feel good. It feels like relief. Like coming up for air. Our nervous systems were built in a world where exile from the group meant death, and somewhere deep in our biology, that fear never left.

So we perform. We curate. We consume the same things, speak the same language, adopt the same aesthetics and call it identity.

Think about Hailey Bieber. She eats sushi with a face mask on. Within hours, thousands of people are rushing to do the same thing. She applies a face mask with a comb and suddenly everybody is doing it. It doesn’t matter if it’s useful. It doesn’t matter if it makes sense. What matters is that she did it, and so now everyone does it.

Social media didn’t create this instinct. It just gave it a stage and a face. Scroll through any platform and you’ll find thousands of people performing individuality in identical ways. The same poses. The same fonts. The same carefully disheveled authenticity. We are, paradoxically, a generation of individuals who have never looked more alike.

And maybe that’s fine. Maybe belonging is worth the cost.

But here’s what nobody talks about: conformity has a price that doesn’t show up on the surface. It shows up in the quiet moments, when you hold back an opinion in a room full of nodding heads, when you buy something not because you love it but because everyone else does, when you look in the mirror and feel vaguely like a stranger.

The brain that rewards you for blending in is the same brain capable of thoughts nobody has ever thought before. Of art nobody has ever made. Of questions nobody has dared to ask out loud.

So the real question isn’t why we choose to be indistinguishable.

It’s what we’re giving up when we do.
