I am back in the city after a booked and busy 20 days in the Portland! It wasn’t really supposed to be a 3 week trip but one of my very best friends was getting married at the start and 2 of my other besties had a concert on the tail end, so an impromptu PNW summer extravaganza it was!

I went to college in Portland and nearly all (seriously like 99.8%) of my friends stayed in the city after we graduated. Making it very convenient to see them all in one swoop but also incredibly annoying to have so many of your favorite people across the country. The joy of living far away from friends is that the time together is SO special and everyone moves their life around (ILY) to make room for as much time together as possible. I am the luckiest girl in the world.

It really feels like summer camp. Especially when it’s a sunny Portland summer and I’m having slumber parties at all of my friend’s houses.

Normally on my longer trips I’ll opt for an airbnb but honestly I was sooo behind after a crazy spring that it was crashing territory not airbnb this time. Since it was a bit longer than my typical guest stay, I gave my dear friends the gift of shared custody, meaning I never spent longer than ~5 days or so at each house. While I’m sure they would have happily hosted me for as long as I wanted, hosting is a lot, even when it’s your bestie.

My sweet friend Sam pointed out how fun it was that I got to take a peek into my friend’s lives and homes in such close quarters. It got me noticing all the little things that everyone does differently, the morning routines, the mindless habits, the early birds and the night owls, the quirks, the way they fold their towels, the little luxuries etc… As I get ready to move into my new, very big-girl apartment I was taking notes and there were a few things I want to steal/take with me into this next space. Some can be linked some are real life things!

Sammy and I were college roommates and have been friends since the first week of freshman year so she is more like family at this point which means staying with her is easy and cozy (it doesn’t hurt that her husband is also one of my very close college friends). They are new homeowners, dog parents to my sweetie girl June and my most adult, okay and by adult I mean married, friends! A couple things I’ll be bringing home with me:

A Cup of Meadow Tea Before Bed

“Do you want tea?” is a regular nightly occurrence at the Joyce house. We didn’t partake as much on this trip because it was so toasty and we had packed evenings but it’s such a nice little evening ritual I’m excited to implement since my “nighttime routine” is pretty nonexistent lately. Their fave, Meadow, is the perfect nightcap from Portland’s own Smith Tea-it’s like a classic chamomile tea with a little extra something something (aka they added lots of other flowers and botanicals so it is a little more complex than chamomile but still so soothing, lightly sweet and floral).

Popcorn bowls & Chopsticks

When you’ve known people for so long time together is so easy, no need to “host” or “entertain.” My favorite time visiting them is always just time chilling at home. This trip was a little go go go but last trip the three of us (plus June who tucked herself on my shoulder like a lap dog) got cozy on the couch to watch a movie and Sean brought us individual bowls of popcorn with chopsticks “we do personal bowls here” we had a few little chocolates in each this time too (Cadbury eggs to be exact). I have already adopted this and it was such a silly but fun little touch.

Glow Getter Naturium Body Wash & Body Scrub

Something about Sammy & I is that despite being 6 feet and just over 5 feet we have always been able to share everything (except pants) somehow the proportions just work-it’s a decade long mystery that we don’t question. It goes for clothes of course but also for our pantries, jewelry and all of our skincare products. Skincare and getting all the good stuff has been her hobby forever, she put me onto Prequel a couple years ago and this trim got me hooked on the Naturium Body Wash & Body Scrub. 10/10 will be stocking in the new bathroom.

& also might have to go back and kidnap June, I miss her.

Ash has her sh*t together. That in-unit washer dryer is working overtime, crumbs fear her. But truly, as a nurse (an angel oncology nurse aka the only one who can actual complain about a bad day at work!) she runs a tight ship and every inch of her space is thought out and optimized. Her apartment before was a studio so she got used to maximizing her space and making the most of her footprint but still has the most HER apartment ever. We are always influencing each other on something to buy that actually makes life better, like K18 dry shampoo or a new gentle cleanser. A couple things I’ll be bringing home with me:

Maison Louis Marie No. 04 Bois de Balincourt

I love a good fragrance and literally went “oooo” when Ash spritzed this on. I proceeded to use it almost every day I stayed there. I have a handful of perfumes I rotate through and I’m hoping that in the move as I declutter and organize I can find some space to add this one to the collection!

Friends in Frames

AKA proof of life! Ash’s apartment is SO her. Every glass, blanket, art piece is 100% Ashley and the one thing I love so much about her little home is how you could know nothing about her and leave knowing so much and knowing the faces of so many of her most important people. From collages on her walls to pictures in frames and Photo Booth strips, it was such a good reminder to me to print and frame some of my people. I think a lot of us got away from that to opt for ~aesthetic~ pieces and I love my art but my besties are masterpieces too and I want the people I love to have a place in my space too!

Side Sleeper Neck Pillow

I fear I might need this one… I’m not sure if it’s just I’m sleeping wonky or as I enter my upper mid twenties (that’s what we’re going with) but I have been feeeelllinngg the consequences of my side sleeping actions lately. Ash chucked this pillow at me and it looks ridiculous but it actually really helped. I think it takes a few nights to find the perfect spot for it to rest but it’s a game changer.

**bonus points for the produce drawer of crispy diet cokes, I’m a full-fat coke kinda gal but the vibes are immaculate as was her salad dressing selection-this one in particular.

From Lauren’s

Lauren (my Lulu!) is lovingly referred to by my sister as my “trendy friendy.” She does not abide by crunchy-gorp-girl-Portlandy fashion standards and is a fashiony girlie girl at heart and her home is no different. It’s just her and her pup Pepper so it’s a perfect little princess apartment! Lauren also is very into food and cooking, she’s a CSA, Farmer’s Market GIRL and her kitchen is 100% the focal point of her house.

Tap Water Perfectly Chilled

Blame it on Pepper (her particular pup and my little buddy), who will only drink chilled water but Lauren always has a glass bottle of water in the fridge door. Nothing fancy just tap water in the type of bottle you usually see at restaurants. I am an ice water girl but it was so nice to be able to just pour and go and it felt a little fancier than going to the sink. I have so many glass bottles hanging around I’m going to have to implement this! Maybe with cold brewed tea at the ready too like my bestie does!

Silicone Baking Sheets

Okay. I have had many many silpats over the years but somewhere along the way I started thinking they were messy or more work or just an extra step that I wasn’t willing to take on. Lauren used them regularly and they weren’t greasy and made clean up so so much easier. I found a few (literally brand new) when I was packing and I’m determined to use them more regularly and to get minis for my quarter sheets to make clean up feel easier.

Ceramic Olive Oil Bottle

Move aside giant Kirkland bottle we have pretty olive oil bottles now! Since the counter-worthy-ification of pantry staples, having your gorgeous bottle of (insert indie or mega-trying-to-look-indie EVOO brand here) sitting out has become the norm. The days of decanting your ugly olive oil into a cuter vessel are over. But as much as I love my gorg olive oils sometimes you just want to be brand-free. Lauren had this gorgeous ceramic olive oil bottle from Spain next to her stove and I’m on the hunt for a version that feels ME & can happily sit on my counter filled with whatever oil I want to put in it. (editors note: she has informed me that it leaks like crazy but I am still on the hunt lol)

As an f&b publicist and food person at large, if there is a fun/indie/novelty snack or pantry brand on the shelf, the likelihood that I’ve tried it is pretty high. When it comes to spreads, that likelihood goes up by a lot. There was a point a couple years ago where I repped 3 different spread brands at a time! I was the publicist for the entire nut butter aisle it seemed. I became entrenched in that category, I was emailed from editors for spread specific stories and even landed a juicy Wall Street Journal piece for a client all about non-nut spreads! It was a time! Since then, I’ve worked with multiple other spread brands in a variety of ways but my roster has become more differentiated, however I am still very opinionated and well-researched on the best spreads out there.

In honor of one of my favorite limited edition spreads being restocked and doing a big clean out of my pantry, I wanted to share my Spreadify Top Charts.

Now, when I was drafting this list, things like fudge, caramel sauce, pesto, etc… entered the chat. For the sake of this post and to make sure it doesn’t become a mile long, the characteristics are as follows:

• Must be in a jar (glass, plastic etc…)

• Must sit on an aisle with the likes of PB, Jams etc… no refrigerated spreads or dips for this one (sorry toum and zhoug I love you)

• Must be something I’ve re-purchased or gifted multiple times, not just a taste at an event or trade show

Okay, now that we know the rules, let’s dig in!

Kate’s Ice Cream x Ground Up

The spread that inspired this post! I interviewed Kate from Kate’s Ice Cream for a class project my senior year of college. At that time she had just launched her micro ice cream brand in Portland and now has shops all over the city-I was and am such a fan of what she’s built. I even ordered a giant box of ice cream to be shipped to my house over covid-I was committed. To my absolute delight back in 2020, an iconic Portland brand, Ground Up, that I love launched an LTO with Kate, Waffle Cone Butter! I was not really a nut butter aficionado at the time but ordered and became obsessed and ordered multiple jars when it was rereleased. It’s back again and it’s genuinely so so good. You need this.

One Trick Pony Crunchy PB

Flipping the PB aisle upside down one jar at a time! My pals and former clients at OTP really are the cream of the crop when it comes to PB-all have a time and place (unsalted for the pups, smooth for the dressings, crunchy for snacking IMO) but I’ve been on a crunchy kick lately! A little texture never hurt! Just Argentinian Peanuts and Patagonian Sea Salt but it really does taste like there is so much more in there-in a good way. A PB pantry staple.

Jamagansett Raspberry Chocolate (Also love the Raspberry Vanilla)

Wow wow wow.

Soom Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Tahini

Bring a jar and a spoon pls. Soom was one of my early clients and let me tell you, getting people excited about this specific jar was not a heavy lift. It’s everything you want from Nutella but better. Crunchy sea salt, super chocolatey with a light nutty tahini flavor (but no nuts!) It’s perfect for a late night snack on toast with butter, a hyper fixation for a while, I love it with berries and on ice cream. It’s definitely more drippy than a Nutella or traditional PB but with a good stir and shake (really get in there) it’s perfect to spread, drizzle and dip on almost anything. I always have a jar in my pantry.

Marmelade Grove Pixie Tangerine

I have to admit something. I am all about citrus but I don’t always love citrus in desserts. I’ve never loved an orange creamsicle or a lemon bar or even a key lime pie, It’s just never been my thing. Because of that I’ve steered away from citrus jams/marmalades etc… but when I tried this Marmalade at a client event, I was blown away. So much so that I even had it at my company’s 5 year birthday party for guests to bring home. The packaging is stunning and so giftable but it’s also so good you’ll want to use it every day.

Big Spoon Roasters Fiji Ginger Almond Butter & Lum Lum Thai Curry Peanut and Cashew Butter

I have tried many Big Spoon Roasters Nut Butters in the past and all are fantastic but none have stopped me in my tracks like these two. I just tried both at the Summer Fancy Food Show and I can’t pick a favorite but I needed both (in fact I added them to my cart immediately after getting home from the show). Lum Lum tastes like the best peanut satay sauce but would be equally at home with some apples as it would in a dressing or as a spring roll dip. Fiji Ginger similarly blew my socks off. The ginger leans fresh and spicy like real ginger instead of warm and cozy like a lot of more autumn-focused ginger/spiced flavors. The little chunks of crystalized ginger bring it over the top.

The best sunscreen is one you’ll actually wear.

Let’s kick the elephant out of the room—my grandpa died when I was 5 from skin cancer that metastasized, he was a pilot before planes had UV protection and most of his life was before sunscreen was popularized. Needless to say, the power of the sun has always been something I’ve understood. But even with that family history, annual derm appointments and sunscreen I don’t think I really started taking sun safety seriously or wearing sunscreen every day until recently.

I was blessed with “grandma genes” aka both of my grandmothers have olive skin and tan easily while my sister has “grandpa genes” aka both of our grandfathers had fair and freckly skin (ginger-adjacent!) and burn easily. Because I “never burn” I was a little more laissez-faire with the sunscreen. I still am not perfect but whether it’s skin cancer or a youthful glow, we all should be protecting our skin!

I can help with that!

As a very picky product gal, I know that if it’s not easy, it won’t be part of my routine so finding products that make it effortless and feel good are a must. And throw some sensory issues in there for good measure—I will not be sticky. I alternate my sunscreens so I’ve tried a bunch and these are the ones I will happily use again and again. With a hot hot hot, outside-heavy weekend coming up, no better time to lather up and protect yourself out there.

Face:

Vacation Spritz

The perfect toss-in-your-purse, touch-up, sunscreen. I wouldn’t use this as my only sunscreen throughout the day—since it is just a mist it doesn’t feel like it’s doing as much as a traditional lotion—but throughout the day it’s perfect and feels like a refreshing mist when it’s toasty. It also smells AMAZING and feels more spa-like than SPF.

Dr. Loretta

I’m picky about a tinted sunscreen but the Dr. Loretta one is great. My esthetician put me onto the Dr. Loretta moisturizer and I love the texture of their tinted one. It’s just enough to even out my skin and have a bit of a blur effect without adding any real color.

Round Labs Birch

One of my besties (hi ) dragged me, willingly, to Senti Senti, a beauty store in Chinatown, a couple years ago and introduced me to Round Labs and the world of K Beauty! It’s super lightweight and dewy without being oily and is just the perfect everyday sunscreen.

Biore

I love a Costco haul and have been loving their beauty section lately. Last trip I split a 3-pack of this spf with my sister and one of our besties. This sunscreen is really thin and goes on smooth and feels really hydrating as well. It has a bright lightly floral fragrance to it which is nice to wake yourself up a bit. (One note, I’m not sure if it’s my eyes being sensitive or my mascara but I wouldn't wear this on a heavy sweat day since it did sting a little in my eyes on a particularly hot walk to my pilates class! Maybe use another one on your sporty girl day!)

Kosas

This little cutie has been in my cosmetic bag for a while! I’ve gone through multiple and especially as a non-makeup makeup girlie, I often opt for this + concealer + blush and call it a day. It doesn’t have a ton of coverage but evens things out and gives you a nice glow! It comes in two shades, I use the original one which I love, I find the other a little too shiny/dark for me.

Sonni Sun Serum

Sun Serum peaked my interest! While, unfortunately, it isn’t a double duty active like a vitamin c, it has a serum-like texture that makes it feel like a natural part of your skincare routine. It is really light and has a satin finish, not super dewey. Because it’s mineral it does have a bit of a white cast so you have to work it in or use as a base—nothing crazy but if you have a darker complexion I’d go for one of the other ones.

Ultraviolette

A new addition to the collection. I picked up this one from Sephora in Palm Springs and loved it. It’s super compact so it’s easy to toss in a bag. And it’s so cute. I use the Future Screen!

**If I could only use one or was starting from scratch I’d go with Round Labs for everyday and Dr. Loretta for tinted!

Body:

Kopari Spray

If you want to GLOW, this is for you. I really like this for legs or a finishing mist for my arms/décolletage before going out. It’s more of a spritzy oil so I so spritz it on myself in the shower/tub just in case (this one has a little shimmer too). I’d say this one probably should be a topper to a tradish lotion sunscreen if you’re going to be out for a while.

Arizona Sun

Before there was Vacation (love) there was Arizona Sun. We had a gallon pump of this in our house after discovering it on a vacation. It is the best smelling sunscreen and feels great too, no sticky-ickiness.

Vacation Lotion

You know her, you love her. Cool for a reason. But I opt for the classic lotion over the whip or gelée!

After Sun:

KORRES Greek Yoghurt Cooling After-Sun Gel

From the greek gods themselves! My parents lathered my sister and I in this after a long day in the California sunshine and it’s been a medicine cabinet staple since. More of a lotion or light gel than a goopy aloe and super light on your skin. It is especially great if you get some color on your face since it’s gentle and can help heal you up without crazy peeling.

Fruit of the Earth Pure Aloe Vera Gel

I read an article last year that said many French women use aloe as body moisturizer, not just for burns, so of course I picked this one up from the local pharmacy. This one is really simple, no added color or fragrance and while it is a bit “tacky” at first it goes away quickly and doesn’t have that sticky I-can-feel-my-pjs-sticking-to-me feeling that a lot of aloe does.

It’s hard to remember a time when my clients weren’t only food people but before the snacks and cookbooks, my work was accidentally in the coaching and personal branding space (more on that side quest coming soon). Let’s just say I learned a lot and a good chunk of that was learning what I never wanted to do in my business. From questionable marketing practices to padded resumes, there was some dubious work happening to say the least. One of the trends I saw in that world has been becoming more visible in my current space-referral fees/commission/kickbacks.

My business has been built off of referrals from the start. Word of mouth is the way to go. There is nothing better than a text from a friend “Are you taking on new clients? I have someone for you!” I love doing the same, I have about a dozen freelance and agency friends from photographers to web designers from recipe developers to lawyers that I am constantly connecting with potential new biz. I genuinely love to play matchmaker and connect great people. It’s meant to be a symbiotic ecosystem of nice people doing good work and getting put up for new opportunities because of it.

Monetizing community, monetizing mutual support and monetizing referrals is icky.

I’ve always felt that way. I don’t think I knew the right words to explain it but I always felt this skin crawling feeling when I would hear people talking about “kickbacks” or “referral incentives.” In my opinion, the incentive to refer someone should be that a) they are a good fit and b) it’s a win for all of us when good people get good opportunities, not that you will get a paycheck when all is said and done.

Over the last few years I’ve had multiple people tell me they wanted to refer new biz to me or wanted me to refer new biz to them. They asked me to "opt in” to their referral network, aka sign a contract. One said they’d take 20% in perpetuity for any client they brought me, another said they would give me a one time bonus of $1000 for any clients I sent their way, the list went on. I made it a principle years ago to not accept these type of arrangements so I politely decline or simply say “I don’t do commission referral structures.”

I want people to refer me because they enjoy working with me or because they think I am the best fit for the job, not because I give them the highest percentage kickback if a client signs. I want to refer people for roles that I truly think they’d excel at, not because I’m looking for a payout.

Getting a check from my friends and colleagues for something that cost me nothing except a quick email introduction is just not how I care to make my money. That’s not the business I’m in. I want good people to work with good people on cool projects for good companies doing good work, that’s it.

I have been seeing this more and more (and also seeing people referring the same people over and over again even if they aren’t the best one for the job because of it) and think it’s an important conversation and we need to take a hard look at it.

**One more little note here: There is also no disclosure for this like there are with #ad so transparency is no where to be found. You may be getting recommended someone that more or less is paying for that endorsement-if I was a founder I would be asking the questions to find out if that’s the case. Always follow the money!

When it comes to referrals, here is what I think matters:

• Always close the loop.

If I had a quarter for every time I referred someone for a project and then never heard another word I’d probably have at least 2 bucks. Two of those times I didn’t even know things worked out until I saw the freelancer posting about the brand on their social weeks later. Life gets busy, I’m guilty of it too, but making sure your connector knows where things landed is so important. If it wasn’t a fit tell them why so they know for future, if something weird happened they should know, if you signed the deal let them know so they celebrate the win with you.

• Send a thank you.

It does not have to be lavish but a nice thank you note and/or thank you gift to show your appreciation and nicely close the loop is a good move! Whether it’s over email or snail mail a simple thank you note is a must! If it’s a constant referrer it doesn’t need to be a gift every time but if someone refers you for a large project, especially if they went to bat for you, a thoughtful gift can go along way! I am a gift giver at heart and take a lot of pride in being a really good gift giver. I have a couple go-tos for referral thank you gifts but often go off script for something that is perfect for the giftee that they wouldn’t buy themselves (for $$$ it is up to personal preference and I don’t have any sort of calculation of % of project fee or anything like that I just pick something that feels appropriate for the relationship and meaningful or thoughtful-I can round some favorites up if people want them).

• Put your best foot forward.

When you refer someone for a project or position that acts as your stamp of approval on both sides of the coin. While we don’t always have the full picture if you are asking someone for a referral or accepting a referral from a friend, make sure you act in a way that represents you well too. It has only happened a couple times but I’ve referred people for projects that have ghosted people on email (not referred again) or for brands that totally treated them poorly (not recommended again). It is awkward, unprofessional and puts everyone in a bad spot. Sometimes things aren’t a fit, that’s okay but if you can keep it nice, professional and above board please do.

• Pay it forward.

Talk about your favorite people to work with in rooms they are not in. Continue to support and lift up your network and make it feel mutually supportive vs one-sided. This also means staying in touch and looped in so you know the type of work they are looking for, their capacity, what they like/don’t like and also any cool projects they are working on that might spark other ideas of things to refer them for in the future!

• Confirm before you connect.

Things are moving quickly, sometimes there isn’t time to do a lot of due diligence and a referral is already a favor but when that referral is not wanted, not vetted or not the right fit it can end up being a hinderance more than a help and becomes the problem of the other person. Lately I’ve noticed a lot of people just sending a cold intro email vs shooting off a quick text or email first to ask if there is interest, this means that more often than not I either have to be the “bad guy” and decline awkwardly with the potential of making the connector look bad or take the call as a make good and then declining after. It saves everyone time and awkwardness if you can get the go-ahead first.

I have spent the last 6 years working primarily with food and bev cpg brands on PR, parties and partnerships but really I’ve spent the last 26 years obsessed with food in every way with a deep love and appreciation for cooking and most importantly cookbooks. If you had told little Delaney she’d be part of the process of bringing a cookbook to life she would have been giddy, the girl who would opt for Food Network instead of Disney Channel, who asked for cookbooks for her birthday since she was 7 (if not earlier) and who forced her friends and little sister to play “Iron Chef” and “Chopped” whenever possible, filmed on the iPad of course.

Adding cookbook publicist and cookbook tour producer to my resume has been a full circle moment and feels like the culmination of years of work and a lifetime of wanting to be closer to this world. I just know that little Delaney would be so proud of me.

A little over 2 years ago I found myself working a lot with talent and cookbook authors from the brand side, whether it was gifting product for book photoshoots, pitching them to have my brands included in their launch party or sponsoring parts of their tour, I was finding myself adjacent to the publishing space often. I always understood the power of cookbook launches to elevate my brand clients so it was a no brainer and selfishly so fun for me. I started thinking about how fun it would be to work on the cookbook side too, to help bring those author’s dreams to life and to bring the brand and the talent side together. It was a passing thought I didn’t share because “how would I even get my foot in the door,” I had no clue. Then, with almost spooky timing, 3 different people over the course of a month asked me if I thought about doing PR for cookbooks or told me I’d be good at it. It was the reassurance and green light I needed. Once that happened I started seeing more and more the need for something different in the book publicity space.

Cookbook author friends were being met with huge retainers they could barely afford with results that fell flat or big agencies with big promises and big excuses to match. I saw the need for support beyond media relations, the need for the events and brand partnerships that really make tours pop and for collaborations and press that actually moves the needle for them. I knew that there was an opportunity here to support authors where it matters and to really be their right hand when it came to their book. It’s a huge investment, the biggest moment in their careers and they needed someone who could help guide them through this time. 2+ years of work deserves to be celebrated loudly not just crawling across the pub day finish line. I started casually mentioning to industry friends I was wanting to work in cookbooks and soon enough I was getting on new biz calls with authors and their managers to talk shop, hoping that I’d find the right fit to trust me to bring their vision to life.

Enter, Cookie Club! My first cookbook baby. is a superstar and the sweetest human ever, I truly lucked out. My love of all things sweet treats and our shared Utah roots made it a perfect match. So grateful for Mallory and her team for trusting me with her big moment and for being the best client turned friend and I am so proud of the work we did (and continue to do) to bring Cookie Club into kitchen’s everywhere. If you don’t have a copy yet you need one asap.

But because one wouldn’t be enough I decided that I would help launch not one but two cookbooks this spring, not just the same season, or same month but launching the same day. When my sweet Lucie was sent my way bringing Cake From Lucie to the people was a no-brainer, well actually about 20 discussions later. I hemmed and hawed about how I could pull this off, I talked to friends, fellow publicists, talent manager friends and most importantly my client Mallory before saying YES. It was fast and furious to pull off but we did it and I’m so proud of the noise we made and for Lucie rolling with the punches and trusting me when it mattered most.

I can’t say I am clamoring to take on that same-pub-day challenge again (I felt very Hannah Montana throwing on and taking off my wig running back and forth between events to show up for my girls) and my brain and belly are still filled to the brim with cookies and cake but I am so filled with gratitude for my cookbook girls who trusted me to launch their books and celebrate this huge accomplishment with them. Seeing the response to their books, the people who drove hours to come to a signing, the brand partners who said yes without hesitation and their families show up for them day in and day out was so moving and really solidified that this is the type of meaningful work I want to do more of.

I can’t wait to welcome more cookbook authors into my world with my cpg brand babies and help them make their cookbook rollout dreams come true (there are some coming soon that I cannot wait to share with you!!)

It’s so easy when you work for yourself to skate through to the next project and forget to acknowledge the milestone so I wanted to take a minute to reflect on what my last few month have been made of and most importantly celebrate Mallory & Lucie, some highlights below (don’t worry dedicated posts for both coming to IG soon-don’t forget to snag your copies!).

Anyone who knows me well knows I feel things and care about things VERY deeply (it’s cool to care!). Good, bad, all the in between stuff. I know many of you reading can relate to that, especially now. The news for the last few weeks, months, years etc… has felt 99% spooky, scary, sad and disappointing all wrapped into one. I know that there are people out in my little Substack or social media sphere that don’t agree with me politically (and if you don’t know where I stand or what my values are by now… where have you been?! This has been on the bottom of my website since the day I hit publish and never changed—you gotta read the fine print people!) but regardless of how blue, red, purple wherever you stand, I hope that everyone reading this can share my humanity here!

I was planning some fun lighthearted food guides for this month but it feels like there is a giant elephant in the room and a horse in the hospital these days, so doing a bright and sunshiney guide on jams would feel very wonky to me. So salt it is because one thing about me is I love a list, love a little cheeky jab and more importantly LOVE my neighbors!

Anyyyywayy, I don’t think I need to tell anyone what atrocities have been happening across the country, the insane propaganda being displayed to distract us and the real suffering going on in our neighborhoods. There are already great resources out there with places to donate, numbers to call and brands to support but more attention is always good so consider this one of the many ways I’m hoping to show my support and advocate for those that can’t advocate for themselves or who need a little extra boost—I’m a publicist by day after all, making noise is my job!

This one is an unserious post about a very serious issue, because I think all of it helps!

Any good midwestern girl knows the best way to melt ice is with a shit ton of salt so without further ado, here is a very serious guide to salt!

My sidekick // Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt

If you could only have ONE salt in your kitchen, this is the one. The gold standard in salt and with a fresh new(ish) look to match.

PNW Princess // San Juan Island Sea Salt

We all love Jacobsen but how about a more niche salty Northwest brand from one of the world’s most stunning places? If I was going to run away from city life, you better believe I’d be hightailing it to the islands off of the Washington Coast. I discovered San Juan Sea Salt at the chicest shop on Bainbridge Island off of Seattle and have been obsessed since—it’s family owned and operated and just delightful (they make great salted caramels too!).

By the bucket // Maldon Sea Salt

Picking up one of these bad boys at Costco (an iconic brand if you didn’t know—renew that membership & buy from them!) will make you feel so so stupid and also so so smart—it’s a deal and it’s in a bucket! I remember when I saw one of my OG faves with one of these Maldon buckets years ago I just knew that 1.25 pounds of sea salt flakes was in my future. Don’t skimp on the salt on top of your cookies, there is plenty to go around.

Crunchy Crunchy // Jacobsen Flaky Sea Salt

You cannot go to college in Portland, Oregon without getting a little salty. Some family members could argue that Portland is where my salty side began but I think being a freshman in college in 2016 anywhere would have made me pretty salty! The other thing about living in Portland is an affinity for niche food culture and artisans galore, including Ben Jacobsen—the salt guy! The Jacobsen team is genuinely lovely and their salt is incredible too. Also, if you cannot be bothered with spilled salt, their pasta salt discs are a fun moment and quite a cute gift with a jar of fancy tomato sauce and a box of good pasta—molto bene!

Okay fancy // Lange Sea Salt

Who needs a little blue box of metal and gems when you could have a little blue bag of different kinds of crystals but these ones you can eat! I met this lovely founder in Charleston and was awestruck by the amount of work, intention and care that goes into every tiny box. The packaging is stunning and makes a fantastic gift but also is pretty enough to keep on your counter to sprinkle as you go.

Salt me like one of those French chickens // Le Saunier De Camargue Fleur De Sel

A couple years ago I spent the month of December in a mountain town in France! It was obviously dreamy (and cold and covid times!) but my highlight was grocery shopping and this very common French sea salt is one of the souvenirs I brought back, gifted and reached for over and over again. Tiny little crunchy flakes that are almost soft?! It’s easy to find in the US now and perfect for finishing anything and everything and makes you feel like Julia Child.

Ina would approve // Amagansett Sea Salt

I met the Amagansett founder at a pop-up last year and genuinely could not walk away from the booth without buying salt—sucker! But it has such a gorgeous texture, more like a fleur de sel than a flaky and has such a beautiful natural briny flavor. It’s also sun-evaporated which is so cool and better for the planet too (no boiling/heating etc…) truly a lost art and hand-cultivated just a couple hours from my little NYC apartment—so wild.

One Ingredient Wonder // Wood Stove Kitchen Rosemary Sea Salt

I got a few jars of this for an event a couple years ago and it is the perfect one ingredient to boost whatever you are making. Add a pinch to salad dressings, popcorn, or tossing with oil and roasting some veg. I normally hate making my life easier but in this case, you should! I also gifted a few jars to family and my aunt texted me weeks later that she finished it and needed to try to recreate it (hint: it’s rosemary and salt!) but it is the perfect ratio.

Salty Ice Cream Perhaps? // Oishii Strawberry Salt

Swalty is one of my favorite flavor subgroups! Salted Caramel, Salted Maple, Chicago Style Popcorn, etc… And this little vibrant superstar combines a trendy branded strawberry with the cool girl’s salt for a sweet and salty bite. It’s so cute on ice cream, cookies, etc…. and makes such a fun niche gift too.

Dreaming of the fjords // Saltverk Lava Salt

Blue Lagoon, frolicking in fields, plunging in the fjords? Well, for now, we have Icelandic salt to tide us over. I tried this stunning salt at a trade show a couple years ago and was sent home with the cutest little mini salt tin. I used it up so quickly and I haven’t even scratched the surface of all their flavors.

I have a cookbook problem.

I have been collecting them since I was in middle school and for every Christmas or Birthday since, there is a cookbook on my list (and subsequently at least one under the tree). I was the college kid with a shelf full of cookbooks and still have maybe a few too many (and several I severely underutilize!)

When it comes to gifting I am so conscious of junk and want things to be fun or functional and cookbooks are both! If you have a home cook in your life that you need a gift for, let this guide your indie bookstore shopping.

I have had the pleasure of having a Natasha baked good or two at her incredible Bake Sale and they do not disappoint. Neither does her book. Natasha is a true recipe developer, every detail is thoroughly thought through and tested so it’s actually perfect every time. A must for any bakers or wannabe bakers in your life.

For the one with the coolest apartment // Cook This Book by Molly Baz

Saying you like Cook This Book feels a little bit like saying you like butter, like obviously-it’s delish! But so many people love it for good reasons, A)for Molly being delightful and B) for recipes that are equally as attainable as they are aspirational. What I love about Molly’s style of recipe dev is that she isn’t always reinventing the wheel but she’s taking something you know and can do like roasted sweet potato wedges and adding her Molly twist for flavors for dishes that are closer to the ones you get in restaurants vs a Tuesday at home.

It’s almost more of a coffee table book than cookbook because it’s so stunning making it the perfect gift whether someone cooks or just looks.

I also am bias since Carolina lives in my grandma’s tiny hometown which feels like such a IYKYK sort of thing!

Growing up, so many of the recipes my parents would make were from one of Ina’s books, from the peanut noodles that became a staple for having people over, to her pizza dough that was the only recipe we used to the famous 4th of July cake (to even more I’m sure I never even realized were hers!). Barefoot in Paris gives the home cook French recipes that don’t feel too fussy and feel VERY Ina.

Recipes are inspiring but adaptable to your taste and whatever you’re eating these days, omnivores welcome in this veggie-heavy book from one of my favorite pescatarian friends.

When I was writing the homebody guide the one thing I intentionally did not add was PJs-the ultimate cozy necessity. I had too many thoughts and realized it should be its own list!

Every Christmas Eve since I was a bebe, the “elves” have given me and my sister new Christmas jammies. That collection and a lifelong commitment to the matching set or nightie (I’ve never been much of a big tee girl), has made me quite the PJ obsessed gal. Jammie Drawer IS Overflowing! I am so glad that the rest of the world is on board for a PJ renaissance. From the tried and true brands to new ones popping up all the time, I have built up quite the collection of comfy, cozy, light and airy and most importantly very cute pajamas over the years. For those new to fun pajama land or looking to upgrade their collection or for a perfect gift, get cozy and let’s dig in.

Cozyland

The PJ platonic ideal and the newest cool girl PJ on the scene. I have a few pairs (long pants and shorts and different tops too!) and the short tee set is my very favorite. So soft and comfy and a really cute and flattering cut. If you want the shorts to have a little more coverage size up and if you want the shirt to be less cropped you can do the same. I have to hold myself back from getting more in their new patterns. They are just all so good (and lots of foodie prints too—eyeing the brunch ones!)

Roller Rabbit

When I was in line for RR’s NYC pop-up, there were at least two girls in line with boyfriends who said something along the lines of “why are we in line for children’s PJs?” Their playful designs and super soft fabric is why kids and adults love them (and getting a cheery “Hi cutie monkeys!” every morning when I walked downstairs in my classic Roller Rabbit jammies on a girls trip was an adorable way to start each day). I started with their OG but just got a one of their lounge sets and it’s light and linen-y and sooo cozy. Currently waiting on their collab line with Lilly Sisto to drop—adore the Sisto sisters!

The Sleep Code

If you are a classic PJ girl this is your stop! I discovered The Sleep Code a couple years ago when I was looking for something with a Liberty pattern and stumbled upon their site full of PJs! They have other brands on the site as well but I have a couple pieces from their line that I really love, a washable silk short set and a pair of Liberty boxers and both are in the regular rotation (obviously if they are on this list!). TSC is not trendy or cutesy it’s very very classic so also a great spot for gifts for your mom, grandma etc…. tip: I’d recommend sizing up in their shorts they are a bit narrow in the thigh!

Dairy Boy

Okay, I’ll admit I was skeptical of Dairy Boy, creator-led fashion brands can be hit or miss on quality and while I can’t speak for all of it, over the last 2 years I’ve accumulated 2 different styles of their PJs and both are frequently in the rotation, the Elizabeth that’s light, classic, very “proper jammie” vibes and their new produce collection that is stretchy, long and super soft. I got the Striped Broccoli set at their latest NYC pop-up and promptly got knocked out with a nasty cold right after, prompting a few too many days rotting in these—perfect timing for a new super cozy and cute set that helped me feel a little less miserable.

Djerf Avenue

Something about Djerf is that Matilda’s designs just fit so well. Everything I have from her, from skirts to dresses, are favorites and the pjs are no different. I got a pair for Christmas a couple years ago from the Sofia Richie collection and they are ultra soft and comfy and cute (note-they are pretty sheer!) They constantly are releasing new patterns too so you can find one you like.

Lake

I learned about Lake first from their light striped robes that all my favorite bloggers wore in like 2016 and quickly their PJs were in the morning routine of every preppy gal I followed (I grew up in a Midwest suburb, The College Prepster (Carly Riordan), The Golden Girl (Jess Keyes) and Sarah KJP were my muses lol). I did not opt in for years until last summer I was planning a girls trip with one of my college besties around her birthday and thought a matching jammie moment would be the cutest gift. Lake was having their annual sale so I snagged a set for each of us (mine: floral, hers: striped) and it turned out the stripes on hers perfectly matched the colors that her and her boyfriend (now fiancé!) were wearing when he proposed the week before—CUTE! Anyway they are soft and breathable, perfect for toasty sleepers and make a great gift too.

A classic for a reason, always great! The TENCEL modal fabric is my favorite, softy & stretchy and breathable. Eberjey always has sales so I’d recommend waiting for one of those—they (like all of these) are annoyingly pricy. But if you wait for the right time you can get a pretty decent deal and live your cozy dreams. I’ve owned their PJs for years and they still as soft as they were when I first got them. These would make for such a thoughtful gift being that they’re a little luxurious addition to anyone’s PJ collection.

Bonus: Brands on my “want to try list” and why I haven’t opted in yet: Negative Whipped Lounge-their ads are convincing and the ultra soft, body hugging material looks amazing and I’ve heard nothing but great things. But it is a VERY very sheer fabric meaning not something you could wear downstairs to breakfast on a family trip or even on a FaceTime if you want to be “decent” from waist up. Lunya Washable Silk PJs-these are so stunning but I don’t tend to gravitate towards a silk PJ because I’m worried about more precious fabrics and the NYC laundry situation is not the most ideal.

Any faves in your rotation that aren’t here?!

I have always struggled with changing seasons. Whether it’s the marker of time passing faster than I would like, disappointment in things I didn’t complete or accomplish or just anticipatory anxiety of what that season or the one after would bring, I feel like I get into my groove right when that season is ending.

The urgency and pressure to have the most summery summer or most autumnal fall while it’s barreling by is something I am often thinking about. The mental and sometimes physical, seasonal bucket list evades me annually, but this year I’m trying my best not to let that stress me out and embrace the season we’re in without putting unneeded pressure on it, especially since fall and winter are busier than ever.

As I was cleaning up my apartment a couple gloomy weekends ago, my neighbor was playing jazz that I could hear through the walls (okay, cute!). I was stacking, packing, tidying and cleaning so many of my favorite home goods and little treasures. Inspired by the tunes and the weather, and since my last gift ideas ‘stack went a little bonkers on here (seems like everyone is looking for ideas these days), I thought I would share a few favorites for the homebodies on your list!

Brooklinen Robe

I got a Barefoot Dreams robe before my freshman year of college and it has been my robe ever since. My friends loved to steal it in college and its stretchy cozy vibe is still great, but I find that it gets TOO hot sometimes for this temperature-sensitive girlie. I needed to upgrade my comforter and splurged on a Brooklinen one a few weeks ago and couldn’t leave without the new stripe ultra plush robe. It’s SO soft without being too hot, perfect for lounging in or loafing around. Huge fan.

Seda Japanese Quince Candle

I cannot overstate how incredible this candle is. If you’ve been to Coming Soon in NYC, one of my fave home stores, this is their signature store scent! I became so obsessed, I bought the big 3-wick one (although I did find out Coming Soon has an even larger one now...) The candle itself is unbranded glass, so it’s not going to bring any design into the space, but it’s nice that it can go wherever. I have become quite the candle connoisseur over the last few years and this is one of my absolute favorites. It’s getting low, so I’ve been rationing it, but will have to replenish this winter. It’s not too sweet, not too floral or fruity, it’s warm but fresh, if that makes any sense.

Japanese Gansai Watercolor Set

I went to London last August with one of my best college friends and stumbled upon the cutest stationery store, Choosing Keeping. I think we spent a good 45+ browsing the shelves of perfect pens, cards for every occasion and the most beautiful bound notebooks in every Liberty London-esque pattern. What can I say, my grandma and aunt owned a stationery store when I was growing up, so a love of paper goods, pens and accessories is genetic, I fear. Right before checking out, I spotted the cutest little stack of boxes, each a different color and filled with little pots of Japanese watercolors. I scooped up one for me and one for my sister. Admittedly, it sat in my desk drawer for almost a year until this summer. Seeking something to do that wasn’t on a screen, I started doing some evening watercolors to wind down—it is so so lovely! They make a perfect gift and are great as days get shorter and a cozy, creative outlet is so needed.

Brunch Slippers

I’ve become a slipper girl. I used to never ever wear them, but the past few years, my tootsies tend to get super chilly, I would find myself tucking them under pillows or making them fall asleep at my desk by tucking them under my legs while I worked. I have a couple of pairs I alternate between but the newest members of the collection are my Brunch Slippers. They have a bunch of cutie pairs—I have the L’appartement 4f collab they did. The sole is more of a shoe-sole which I like when I’m walking around the apartment in them. I don’t wear them outside, but if you needed to run to take the trash out etc… you could and then wipe them off!

Brodo Bone Broth

I am not usually a warm drink girl and honestly, not the biggest soup girl either (I know, I know,) which I think is part of the reason that I don’t love fall and winter food as much as spring and summer. I’m a fresh & bright girl, not a warm & hearty girl! But, last winter, Brodo was a little cozy lifesaver; they have a shop in the city, too! So many friends are already getting sick (flu shot season, let’s go!), I’m mentally preparing and Brodo is so good you don’t need to be sicko to enjoy. I’m not a regular bone broth sipper, but their flavors are yummy and it would be SUCH a good gift for a friend who is sick, just had a baby etc, too! You can get it at WF or order online and keep in your freezer, I like the Tom Yum one a lot.

Hawkins New York Mug

Last year, one of my friends got me this oversized, cartoonish, butter yellow mug as a thank you gift and I use it ALL the time. I have quite the mug collection—you can’t live in Portland for 4 years and not leave with a truckload of ceramics from small local makers—but find myself reaching for this one for more than a cuppa. Because of its size, it’s perfect for a couple scoops of ice cream, cereal, some snacks at my desk or a breakfast yogurt bowl. It feels sturdy without being too heavy and it is just so cute. They have a bunch of colors but it’s the perfect cozy mug to round out your collection.

Soft Services Theraplush

I have never been a hand lotion gal, blessed by the not-dry-skin gods (I give credit to growing up in the high desert mountains!) But I love everything Soft Services makes and their Theraplush actually makes me want to put hand cream on, especially before bed. I got it as a gift last year and love it! It’s a pretty vessel and you can use the top as a ring dish and just leave it on your bedside table or bathroom counter. It feels like a little luxury moment and smells great without being overwhelming with fragrance.

Land Downunder Mohair Throw

This might be my most embarrassing but very beloved purchase. Do not click if you aren’t looking for a splurge (or to make some irresponsible purchases). I popped into one of the many cute stores on Atlantic Ave. and saw baskets full of these gorgeous, supremely soft mohair throw blankets in PERFECT colors. I assumed they would be super expensive so I didn’t even look at first, but after doing a full browse of the store, I decided to check. To my very pleasant surprise, it had “$125” scribbled on the tag. I expected much, much worse, so I sort of Trojan-horsed myself into picking up the stunning yellow mohair throw—softest thing I’d ever felt—and walking confidently up to the counter to check out. You can imagine my surprise when I handed them my card, only to see $425 (plus tax) when they flipped the iPad back to me to sign. I had mistakenly read the 4 as a 1—nightmare. I know I probably could have returned it, but I was so embarrassed (anxious girls get it) and do really love it, I’m just extremely careful with it now—a precious heirloom! If you are looking to splurge or add something to a registry, this one is for you. If not, please don’t judge me and please keep scrolling.

Dansk Butter Warmer

I became deeply infatuated with Dansk cookware a couple of years ago and have been slowly collecting more and more. From vintage fondue pots to new pieces, I love them. But probably my most used and loved piece of the collection is my butter warmer. I don’t have a microwave and find myself using this adorable little sauce pot for so many tasks, beyond melting butter, although it has browned a lot of butter! I use it to warm up individual portions or leftovers from curry to soups, making simple syrup or a quick sauce, to warm up caramel, fudge or melt chocolate. It’s so cute and so functional!

Laurel & Ash Maple Syrup

Okay, hang with me, there is nothing cozier than a morning in jammies (speaking of, as a matching pj girl, I might need to do a guide to jammies next—I have thoughts) making pancakes. No pancakes are complete without syrup! With this syrup, a little goes a long way. I also love adding a drizzle of this to salad dressings, roasted veg, whipped cream or you can add this directly to your coffee or matcha too! What’s more fall than maple?

In the last year, I’ve spent close to 2k on newsletter subscriptions (the majority being Substack with a couple stand alone paid newsletters through other platforms). Currently, after some purging and one-offs throughout the year, my annual total on Substack alone is over $1400 in annual subscription fees with the current collection of subscriptions (that amounts to 24 paid Substacks at the time I’m writing this).

That might seem excessive (it is) but I think it showcases how quickly subscription-based content adds up and how unsustainable it is for everyday people. I subscribe to many more than I would if I didn’t work in the field I do but as someone who has always been a magazine girl, a blog follower and a newsletter reader, I do wonder what the bill would rack up to if I was just subscribing for “fun.”

I am a firm believer (and have been for years) that Substack is THE place to be right now. It’s in the conversations I have with clients, part of their paid partnership strategy, part of my client research, who I pitch and makes up a healthy portion of my media diet. There is no longer time to be an early adopter/user/writer, if you’re new, you are right on time, if not a few steps behind but now or never!

There are writers on here bringing in hundreds of thousands from Substack alone (yes), it’s helping people land cookbook deals, allowing journalists to leave traditional media etc... Let’s just say there’s a lot of money to be made and paid here. But I’ve also seen (from all my paid subscriptions and beyond) that not all ‘stacks are created equal and honestly a lot are not worth the $5 a month baseline Substack has on paid subscriptions-and that is being polite.

Before diving into some favorites, a few little notes here:

What I think makes a Substack worth paying for (what makes me pay and keep paying)

1. A strong POV

2. Consistency and accountability

3. Offers something new/of value

4. Tangible takeaways (this is a little harder to define but I gravitate towards long form reported articles or storytelling/essays, recipes or recommendations from people whose taste I appreciate/admire.)

Why I’ve unsubscribed from paid subscriptions

1. Mean-spirited or TMI

   1. No meanies allowed. There have been a couple newsletters that initially caught my eye and then became pretty off-putting. Ex: One just felt like mean girl gossip for the sake of it (I don’t like funding mean girls) and another became so deeply personal it felt icky, voyeuristic and uncomfortable to read-it went beyond vulnerability especially when it was sharing private details about another person (It’s human nature to be a little nosey but it felt distasteful).

2. The content direction changed

   1. People grow and evolve and so will their content! Nothing wrong with that but sometimes we outgrow as readers or are just in different places. Ex: a writer I really liked ended up making her paid subscriptions all wedding planning and budgeting related, while I do like wedding content, paying extra for it when the content I was actually there for was all on the free tier felt a little silly.

3. Felt phoned in

   1. Many times when I am choosing to upgrade to or right-off-the-bat choose a paid tier of a Substack, I am investing in that specific writer and the potential I see. Sometimes it becomes clear a few issues in that either the writer lost steam or maybe just doesn’t want to do this as much as they thought they did/maybe were told it would be a good income channel by their team. You can tell in content when it was a box to be checked and it’s just not a fun read especially when you know that you paid for that.

4. Here for a good time, not a long time

   1. Sometimes I just really want access to one issue-sue me! Whether it’s a specific article a client is featured in or a topic I’m really interested in, I am definitely guilty of subscribing for a month or two to read it and then cancelling later when there isn’t additional content that sparks interest. It’s okay to not commit for a year if you aren’t sure.

Now onto the fun stuff (I’m not going to call out the ones that I’ve unsubscribed from or don’t like, just highlighting a few (paid) faves that I think are worth the subscription!)

earlybird

I have followed Maggie on Instagram for years, her perspective on social media, mental health, tips and recs have always been so refreshing and thoughtful. Her recommendations are always top tier and well researched and her healthy relationship with social is something to strive for! She also is a really wonderful example of being a mom online, respecting her little one’s privacy and still sharing that side of her life. She also makes me feel a little homesick for the Pacific Northwest (in a good way) and I love seeing all her outdoorsy adventures and coffee shop adventures alike. I want to be like Maggie when I grow up!

Side Dish

Alexis is one of my fave recipe developers, her stunning property in the Hudson Valley and hundreds of baby chicks don’t hurt either. The best way I can describe her recipes are “highly cook-able.” So many recipes are gorgeous and impressible but few I actually would picture making on an average weeknight. I love that Alexis has a combo of simple recipes with more elevated options for entertaining with lifestyle and personal anecdotes peppered in.

Link in Bio

I have been a fan of Rachel since her Bon Appétit days and ever since she started, Link in Bio has been one of the BEST, most valuable newsletters (and resources) around social and marketing as a whole. Link in Bio is also a great example of the newsletter itself only being the tip of the iceberg. Rachel has done a great job of being an advocate for social media pros and making Link in Bio an invaluable resource-from IRL events to a job board, best practices and a discord channel, it’s clear that Rachel actually wants to help people and educate, she easily could be charging a few grand like those business coach scammers to share all of this but you can get it all for *enter every substacker’s favorite phrase to justify charging* “less a month than your daily iced latte.”

Feed Me

If you are in any marketing adjacent field or into *culture* you probably know Emily Sundberg. Put lightly, Feed Me is a business. It’s not blog-like, it’s editorial, reported and researched as well as having a clear POV and plenty of hot takes. I think of Feed Me as Substack’s The Cut with a business-y twist. Feed Me has a pulse on the zeitgeist and what’s culturally cool at the moment. If you are cool girl, or want to be one, you read Feed Me (positive connotation). With topics that range from tariffs to GLP1s from MAGA parties to gatekept facialists, don’t worry, you’ll be fed.

Thyme is Honey

Dani does not put herself into a box. If I were to try to explain the writing and perspective of Dani in one sentence I’d probably struggle to encapsulate it all. She’s an expat in Copenhagen, a dog mom navigating grief, a productivity and organization pro, a progressive activist, loves good food and is obsessed with hydration. Somehow it all connects and feels authentic and engaging no matter what the topic is. The underlying theme to all of Dani’s work is research! Tried and true methods, systems and storytelling all backed by science and highly functional. Whether you are trying to feel more organized in life or your business or your digital space, I’d highly highly recommend following along. Dani also has lots of downloads and tools that support and supplement her writing and processes.

Hot Side

A new addition to my lineup, food content fatigue is a real thing. When you consume food content all day every day, sometimes it can feel like you are seeing a lot of the same thing. While Max isn’t doing anything crazy or “new,” his style of cooking is exactly what I want I’m craving right now-that crispy chipotle trout with apple and kohlrabi salad-YUM! Also shoutout to Max for being the token man in this lineup (very curious what the data is on % of Substacks written by men bc it definitely seems like the girls are leading the charge).

Night Shade

Who knew I’d be looking to the founder of a beverage brand for shopping and style inspo but here we are. There is some very real cognitive dissonance that comes from the life Glossier alum and Ghia founder, Mélanie, depicts online. On one hand she is discussing fundraising, keeping a lean team, the always-on life of being a founder, on the other? The curated (incredibly chic and incredible expensive) wardrobe she styles, galavanting from her epic NYC loft to her newly renovated Parisian apartment to Costa Rica surf trips and other glamorous vacations peppered in. There are a lot of CPG founders envious of her lifestyle but is it part of her job as a founder to present this lifestyle? Is her life inspiring enough to think “I want to life like this, I’ll drink a Ghia!” I don’t know about that but I do know she has impeccable taste and I do read every issue (with my wallet in the other room and a lot of self restraint). More thoughts on founder substacks and personal brands later….

Morning Person

I would be remiss to not include the lovely Leslie in this post-my very first Substack subscription! Morning Person has amassed over 46k subscribers that follow along each week for Leslie’s Tuesday issue that covers everything from books she’s reading, her separation from her husband, Costco shopping lists, expert interviews, social media addiction and her relationship with alcohol. I feel like In many ways I feel like I’ve grown up with Leslie! 5 years ago I did an informational interview (call) with her a couple weeks after Covid started, not long before she left Cupcakes & Cashmere, starting Morning Person and moved to Portland, right as I was leaving the city. As a loyal C&C reader since middle school, following Leslie to where she landed next was a no-brainer. Substack was VERY new but I decided that the $60 a year to continue to keep up with one of my fave writers was worth it-4 years later I would still recommend it! A couple extra notes: Leslie is CONSISTENT. From the jump her style, format and design was solid. Also Leslie’s newsletter is ad and affiliate free-a rarity these days that I find incredible refreshing.

Gift-giving (and list-making) is my love language. I LOVE giving gifts. It is one thing I really feel like I’m good at. It could be from my encyclopedic knowledge of cute brands or my very specific memory that is normally useless information storage, but sometimes comes in handy. Like when I remember the favorite cookie my friend told me about freshman year and make a dupe of them for her birthday years later, or the first movie my bestie and her now-fiancé watched together and can incorporate that into their wedding gift (if you are reading this A+A keep scrolling).

BUT gift giving when you don’t know someone well or just need a little something thoughtful can be tough-no more bottles or wine or re-gifted candles.

A couple weeks ago, one of my favorite Substack gals and internet pals, , was crowdsourcing recs for “surprise and delight gifts” and it felt like my Super Bowl question, I’d just been waiting for someone to ask. SO I compiled the ideas I listed in that thread with a few more goodies in case you are in a gifting rut, need to send a thoughtful thank you or want to treat yourself to a little luxury too (you deserve it!)

Here is the general gifting criteria I live by in case it helps: They have to fit in at least one of these bullets (this is for non-sentimental gifts—think host, thank you, get well soon, client gift, just because etc….)

• Consumable or Highly Functional

  • I don’t know if it’s become heightened since moving to NY and the space dilemma that comes with that, but I am so conscious of giving people more stuff. That’s why 99% of the time I lean on consumable gifts—something that will get used up and then recycled/tossed.

• A little luxury or elevated version of something they may already have/use

  • Who doesn’t love feeling spoiled! Gifting something that’s a little fancy, a little indulgent or elevated is a treat. Fancy hand soap, a spa-like cleaning spray, elevated essentials that people wouldn’t buy themselves but will enjoy!

• An introduction to a favorite

  • This may be controversial. Of course, the best gifts are the ones tailored to the receiver, but there is something special about getting something from someone that says, “this is my favorite and I want you to try it because I think you’ll love it too!”

• It should be fun!

  • Gifts should not add burden to people, they should add joy! Gifts that require significant effort should be given sparingly.

• Experiential

  • Not listed below, but this is always going to be one of the best things! A massage, a facial, a class, a great meal together etc…

Four of the most precious petite jam jars with fruit from farms in the Hamptons. They are gorgeous AND delish. If you want to go with a full jar or two, the Chocolate Raspberry is unreal but you can’t go wrong.

These are by farrrrrrr my favorite kitchen towels. They are super absorbent, easy to clean and come in so many cute patterns for every decor style. I was given one as a gift and ordered dozens for holiday gifts last year—if you see this and might get a holiday gift from me this year… maybe don’t buy these for yourself…

A Cosmetic Pouch They’ll Actually Use

Hill House, Roller Rabbit and Weezie cosmetic bags come in a variety of patterns for anyone in your life. I am partial to a coated fabric pouch in case of potential spillage, but it’s also so nice to have for containing cords or organizing large totes to have essentials handy (and they are so cute).

Bougie Gougies Gift Box

Okay, I have to shoutout oneee of my own clients here! These ready-to-bake gougeres are easy-to-bake crowdpleasers—the perfect gift for your hosting friend. They make the house smell amazing and make you seem very impressive.

The Best Frozen Cookie Dough

I love to make cookies from scratch as much as the next gal but there are a few store-bought options that really do taste homemade. My faves are Something Sweet & Hot Take—both have the sweetest founders too! Great gift for the sweet tooth to keep in their freezer, they’ll think of you every time they pop one in the oven.

Marmelade Grove Citrus & Marmalades

I discovered Marmelade Grove a few years ago and have been obsessed since. Their branding is amazing and they have the most beautiful, fresh fruits and marmalades from Ojai! Like giving a box of sunshine.

Flamingo Estate Hand & Dish Soap

Flamingo Estate is the epitome of luxurious—a little Goopy and known for their less-than-affordable price points. If you need a host gift or thank you for someone and don’t want to deal with allergies or dietary preferences etc… their dish and hand soaps and cleaning sprays are a good bet! They are gorgeous and a little luxury someone might not buy themselves.

Osea Body Wash

I got a free travel-size of this body wash a couple months ago and I have been blown away. For the amount of care I put into the cleansers and shampoos I use, I am not very loyal to body washes—they all are normally just fine, but this is THE body wash. I love the smell and it’s hydrating without being oily, I could go on but it really does have that spa-vibe that’s perfect for someone who needs some r&r.

Alter:Bio Elevated Home Cleaning

I was gifted some of these STUNNING cleaning products by their lovely founder, Lauren, and I am so obsessed. Just from the pictures I was breathless, but the scents (and efficacy) are wonderful too—a win-win truly.

Really good butter & fresh bread

Last but not least, this might be one of my fave gifts. Don’t worry if you don’t have the energy for a sourdough starter (I have never really tried) it can be as simple as picking up a loaf from your fave bakery (my neighborhood faves are L’appartement 4f, Bicyclette and Laurel) and wrapping it in a bow or basket with some really good butter—go for a French one like Beurre Bordier, Isigny-Sainte-Mère, my favorite is Grand Fermage but can be hard to find in the US OR go for a domestic cultured option like Ploughgate or Kate’s. If you can’t find any bougie butter, grab some unsalted sticks, take to room temp and whip with honey, maple, roasted garlic, rosemary, flaky salt etc… whatever flavored butter you want, and put it in a cute weck jar that can be reused, for a DIY fancy butter moment.

Part of the deal is that this industry isn’t the most stable in the money department. There are many industries that would be more lucrative (I don’t want to talk about what my tech PR friends charge) but I love food and food people. I’ve been enamored with all things edible since I was little so in many ways getting to think and write about food and the lovely people behind it is little Delaney’s dream come true.

It feels exciting and natural to spend all day evangelizing brands that I love, I don’t know if I could do that (or at least not as well) with a random gadget or app.

I really hate take down culture and being negative on here but this is a sticky topic that I think needs addressing. After a few too many disappointing experiences, writing email replies that make me nauseous and hearing similar stories from fellow self-employed friends, it’s time to unpack so this a) doesn’t happen to others and b) we can all be better collaborators to each other.

I’ve had clients back out last minute before but recently in a span of 2 weeks I had 2 brands that were slated to kickoff with me back out just days before we were supposed to start work together, back to back. Talk about a gut punch and then getting hit while you’re down. I had planned on those retainers, turned potential brands down since my capacity was going to be filled with them, starting hyping them up to media and industry pals because I was excited and wanted to hit the ground running… Only to receive the most casual emails backing out at the last minute to no fault of my own.

There was little if any acknowledgment of the impact this would have on me and my business, if anything they apologized for the “inconvenience” and said they’d “circle back.” Both cited money related situations, one had some unexpected hold ups and the other just decided they actually didn’t want to spend that $$$ yet (would have been awesome to know before I put all the onboarding materials together & more but alas). The communication made it seem like no big deal, as if they were rescheduling a coffee meeting not thousands of dollars of labor.

I am a human, I get it but I am also a business and those “no biggie” changes or rain-checks are big to a one-person team like me. There’s no cushy 9-5 salary or trust fund here to buoy those kind of fluctuations, it’s really up to me to make sure I’m hitting the marks I need to. Those two 6 month retainers combined would make up half of my revenue for the rest of the year. That’s a major loss for any company. Especially considering all of my roster was supposed to be filled, I was not in active conversations with potential clients at the time so it wasn’t like I could just “pull” someone from a waitlist somewhere. I’ve spent 5 years figuring out how to weather the storms of monthly income fluctuations and all that jazz so I am in a really lucky position that these didn’t put me in a really bad spot but not all freelancers have built up that cushion and regardless it just sucks.

Plans change, things come up, money runs out, emergencies happen. I get it. I am very lucky to have several longterm clients in the DVC pantry but sometimes people gotta go for one reason or another and I never hold it against them. Funding didn’t come through as expected, team resources are not where they need to be to support PR, supply issues, unexpected expenses or maybe we just aren’t a fit. I’d be lying if I said these don’t sting (though sometimes whether I’m the one to pull the ripcord or not, it’s for the best). There is a very uncomfortable pattern I and many of my freelance/consultant/contractor friends have run into over the past few years of brands “forgetting” that we are running businesses too.

If I had a dollar for every time a new brand reached out to me, told me they didn’t have a budget in mind (this can be another substack!) and then upon getting the quote haggled, guilt tripped and asked for exceptions under the reasoning of “we’re just a small business” I would at least be able to buy a really nice olive oil from Big Night ;)

I have watched talented and kind friends get taken advantage of left and right. Invoices unpaid for months with lots of false promises, crossed boundaries, early termination and blatant disrespect. It feels like a lot more than the normal “cost of doing business.”

If a product-based brand had a huge order from a retailer and went into overtime on production to get it ready, took out a loan etc… and then at the last second the retailer pulled it (I know it’s happened before) that would be hugely impactful for the brand and they would not take it sitting down. And you’d certainly see a Linkedin post about it.

Why do we think doing that to service providers is so different?

We’re not talking giant agency conglomerates that won’t “feel” you leave, we’re talking 1-5 person teams that are counting on that retainer, planning capacity around that retainer, hours and hours of initial calls, prep time, proposals, contracts, legal fees etc…

I think brands often forget that service providers are small businesses too. That we have expenses and goals just like they do. Many of us do so much to support small brands whether it’s pro bono offerings, consulting services, making pricing exceptions for tiny brands we believe in, reducing scopes etc… so getting taken advantage of or being disrespected hurts big time and it’s time for a change.

As a very smart friend and mentor told me recently, her mantra for the year is “I can no longer sacrifice my business’s success for someone else’s.” It really has stuck with me. It does not mean we don’t care about other people/brands or being selfish, it’s the business equivalent of putting your oxygen mask on first.

This is not about just one brand, one person or one situation, this is an industry-wide problem that we need to talk about.

Here are some things to keep in mind if you are a brand looking to engage with a service provider to make sure it’s a positive/equitable/fun experience for all parties:

1. No free lunch. If you are a for-profit business you should not expect work for free (and please don’t try to guilt trip us into it) or extremely discounted. If someone is doing work that will help you make money, yes even if you aren’t profitable right now, they deserve to be compensated fairly. It’s 2025, no one running a for-profit business should expect any work that could help them make money free of charge, this includes unpaid interns-pay people!

2. Flakey is for croissants. Backing out last minute or dipping out early can cost us a lot in lost revenue, communicate early and often if something is changing we can make a plan together (and do your best to do right by your partners-effort, care and kindness goes a long way!)

3. Know your budget and be upfront. If you can’t afford someone/something that’s okay! You can be honest and decline or go into those conversations clear headed on what you can afford ahead of time (or give them a heads up that you are just looking for initial quotes to gauge-so appreciated). If someone is out of reach, ask if they have a referral for a friend or colleague who may be more in line or if they would suggest you wait it out.

4. “Cool” doesn’t pay the bills. We might not have money in inventory but service providers have expenses too both in life and in the business. Everyone’s brand is revolutionary to them, don’t count on your cool factor to get treated differently/special deals.

5. If you can’t commit, please don’t. No one is pressuring you, the decision is yours if it doesn’t feel right, wait it out. If signing a 6 month contract freaks you out, talk it through and maybe revisit when that commitment feels more manageable. Anyone making you feel like it’s now or never is probably not a great fit anyway.

6. Buy nice or pay twice. I saw this quote recently about buying quality clothing and it rings true for services too. I’ve talked to many brands that went with the cheapest option and didn’t get what they wanted and had to find a different (typically more expensive option) to fix/clean up the mess. More often than not you get what you pay for (that doesn’t mean the most expensive option is always right either). I’ve been on the other side too so I get how tempting it is to bargain hunt but the right fit and a partner that gets you is invaluable.

7. A fit goes both ways. Ask them questions about how they work, their style etc… but also open up the space for them to understand your company dynamic and needs.

8. Let them be the filter. In my opinion more information is always better. Over communicate your needs, information they may need to do their job well and let them filter out the useful with the less helpful

9. Duckies in a row. Make sure you have the resources and infrastructure (not just the cash) to have a successful business partnership. If you aren’t sure what that commitment is or they didn’t outline it, ask them what they would need from you to be successful.

10. Stand up for them. If you want your brand partners to treat the brand like their own and be part of the team, treat them that way. If someone on the team is disrespecting them or undermining them, call it out and make it right. If someone is questioning the spend, take the time to explain the value or help facilitate an open dialogue.

11. Golden rule. Treat people the way you want to be treated. Brands and points of contact that are kind and fun to work with only make the work better and create warmth and brand affinity that compounds!

12. Be their cheerleader too. At the end of the day, it’s business but business is way more fun if things feel like a two way street. Show that you value them, share your wins with them and celebrate their success outside of your work together too. It just makes it all feel more human and kinder.

13. Reputation is everything. This industry is sooo small. Be nice to work with, pay on time and just be a good human. It will take you far!

Service providers ARE small business owners too. Your success and theirs can be tied together but one is not more important than the other.

This Substack comes from a point of frustration, yes, but really I want this to be a call to action for founders and marketers (not my clients though, you’re the best) to communicate respectfully and to treat your vendors, service providers and consultants like people, not like line items to be slashed. Callous cuts, backing out of agreements, taking advantage of kindness, scope creep and not respecting their value and boundaries are all real problems for great service providers. I have many past clients that no longer are on retainer but who I still run to hug at trade shows, cheer for in the comments and buy at the store-all because they were a joy to work with, respected me and valued my work. That goodwill doesn’t disappear when a contract is over.

Make your team and your brand easy to love & easy to cheer for. In a small industry (and world) having people rooting for you on and off your payroll is an invaluable commodity and burning bridges will not light your way to success.

This is also a call to action to my fellow freelance friends and self-employed pals to know your worth, stick to it and stand up for yourself-no one else is going to!

Since I was a little baby student journalist, I’ve been pretty aware of the importance of crafting your “media diet.” While the state of the world, work obligations and ~anxiety~ took away my diligent daily practice of digging into WSJ, NYT, The Skimm etc… (don’t worry I still stay tuned in, I just give myself a little more grace), Substack has become a welcome addition to my routine.

I often read them in my inbox but on days/weeks when my inbox is trying to end me, sometimes logging onto the app helps separate work reading from leisure reading (even though as a food gal the lines get a bit fuzzy).

With more people starting on Substack and people migrating here to avoid Zuck and TikTok drama, I wanted to dig into 5 of my favorites that I think everyone should subscribe to. Let me know if I should highlight some other faves!

No one does consistency and value quite like Rachel. Whether you opt for paid or not, Rachel (ex: Bon Appetit social pro) brings tangible, helpful, transparent content from interviews to trend reports and more all about the world of social and social adjacent. If you work in marketing, run your brand’s social or are obsessed with TikTok, this is a must read. p.s. I am almost as obsessed with this newsletter as I am with Rachel’s incredible wedding cake.

What to Cook When You Don’t Feel Like Cooking by Caro Chambers

An OG on Substack and now a cookbook author, Caro just gets it. Her recipe index makes things so easy (only pet peeve is the recipe pdf downloads don’t have pics haha). I got her cookbook for Christmas but have been a subscriber for nearly a year and often save her recipes and love reading her lifestyle/shopping picks too!

Thyme is Honey by Dani Brufoldt

I stumbled upon Dani’s instagram early on in my freelance career. She was a Midwestern Copenhagen expat that shared a couple mutual pals. I followed for her refreshing productivity tips (not in a toxic girl bossy way) and stayed for her authentic commitment to social justice, her Copenhagen life and her sweet late dog Walter who the internet fell in love with. I was lucky enough to get to meet up with Dani in person when I was working from Copenhagen a couple summers ago. It just so happened that my airbnb was directly across the street from her apartment, she was so warm and helpful and her Substack is no different. SO many helpful templates, tools and actionable tips always.

Scraps by Carolina Gelen

I’m sure many of you follow Carolina on IG or TT for her vibrant recipe videos, Scraps is where the real recipes live! Carolina is a lovely food pal of mine (and fellow Utah gal-lives in the same town my Grandma is in!) and one of the kindest content creators out there. Her new cookbook is lovely and her newsletter is really an extension of that, I love that they are fun and all have twists but are very approachable and doable. Perfect for food ruts!

PIGPEN by Heather Hurst

Heather is one of my favorite fashion follows! She has a really thoughtful perspective on personal style and dressing that has resonated with me. While a lot of fashion/styling content can feel out of touch, I find that Heather’s leans more inspirational than aspirational! Especially in the post-college 20’s figuring out how to dress like YOU can feel so hard and I always find myself excited to think differently about what’s already in my closet, unexpected combinations, the art of a bag charm and more. Her Substack is an extension of her social presence but allows her to deep dive into her thoughts, and her dog Pig is one of my favorite internet pups ever!

I’ve always been a pretty trusting and optimistic person. I normally see/expect the best in people and it takes a lot for me to get actually angry (as my friend’s say: cartoon clenched fists angry). I went back and forth on if I should share this story but now that the rage has subsided (mostly) I think there are some good lessons to be learned here. If this can help another freelancer protect themselves and remind people that being upfront and honest is always the right answer (aka don’t be a sh*tty human).

A couple years ago I had someone reach out about hiring me for PR services for her brand, a consumer product. Let’s call her “N” for the sake of ease here. It wasn’t a food brand and not really a fit for me but we had some mutual connections so I asked if she would want to hop on a call. Lesson number one it’s okay to say no thank you from the jump! N replied that she didn’t want to waste my time if I wasn’t in their budget and asked I could just send her my pricing and services (at the time I thought “how considerate”). I sent over some information on my pricing and scope options. Normally I would share those details on a call after asking some questions, maybe give a starting point over email but use the call as a way to gauge scope since things can vary so much based on goals. N said that retainer was out of her budget but would I be able to “just write pitches” for her instead. The answer was no (for many reasons too long for this note) but I told her I could do a paid consulting session with her if she wanted to get my eyes on the pitches she was sending as she attempted DIY’d her media efforts. I hadn’t done many of these so I wasn’t entirely set in how I priced and structured them. For $250 she got a one hour Zoom call with me to answer all her questions, it seemed like a fair deal at the time. She said that was perfect and we scheduled the call-easy.

N paid her invoice, woo, and we had a really productive session. I felt great about it and was excited to offer that service more so I could have a way to work with people/brands that weren’t quite ready for a retainer. She asked a ton of questions and took notes like how to find the right media contacts, we brainstormed angles, workshopped her pitches and I gave her a quick run through of PR 101, best practices, the current landscape and the value of press etc... In addition to her product-based business, N was a marketing & sales consultant, I knew that but her niche was definitely more on the sales side, she didn’t have any comms experience so we were really starting from the ground floor. After the session, I wanted to be helpful so I followed up with a recap of our call, some additional ideas, as well as some spreadsheet templates to help her out. N’s product was not one I would work with and not competitive with my clients so it just seemed like the nice and helpful thing to do and I love being a helper!

Not even a week after our session, I see some eerily familiar language on my Instagram feed, wouldn’t you know it, N is starting to offer PR services as someone with no PR experience other than a one hour call with me! Who knew I was such a great teacher ;) I scrolled through her Instagram stories, reading her talk about the value of PR, why brands should invest in it and more. All items regurgitated almost (if not completely) word for word from our session-it was beyond shocking. While a lot of what I said was not necessarily groundbreaking in the PR space, the timing felt spooky to say the least.

I let it sit for a few days and then saw more and more posts on her feed about this new offering and positioning herself as a “PR expert”. I really could not believe it. After stewing on it I decided to try to get ahead of it and email her. I reminded her of the terms of our contract and pointed out that I was surprised to see she was now offering PR services (I just re-read the email and was way too nice-like I included a smiley face nice-my PR friends now would scold me, current me would scold me!) She replied that launching PR services had always been the plan and wasn’t taking anything from our sessions…sure.

Lesson here: Your expertise is valuable, clients pay a lot for it, you worked hard for it, don’t let people take advantage of you to obtain it.

I wish I had done more due diligence and I wish I had called her out in a bigger way 1:1 at the time. People shouldn’t be able to get away with bad behavior and taking advantage of other women growing their business? Major yuck. Don’t be the reason someone has to put their guard up.

The truth is, if she had been upfront and told me she was thinking about offering PR services and wanted to connect I probably would have said yes. At least then I would have been armored with the knowledge that once I share, I can’t take it back so to only share what I was comfortable with. This has happened multiple times with me thinking people want to connect as friends or to network and then halfway through the convo I learn their motive is different. It’s about intention. Is your intention to connect, become friends, learn, glean or take everything you can for free and run out the door without as much as a “thanks for your help!” It always stings when you feel taken advantage of but I don’t think it means we stop trusting and sharing, it just means maybe we ask a few more questions, trust our gut and honor our boundaries.

For those who just wanted some lessons on what not to do, you can stop reading here. For those who want to feel just a little bit cranky with me and get filled in on the twisted way the world works sometimes, buckle up.

Fast forward a few years, it’s 2024 and I have not seen or heard anything from N since I got her reply to that email. I unfollowed her on all platforms pretty quickly so I wouldn’t fall into rage scrolling etc… Unless someone was dealing with a similar situation, I almost forgot that it ever happened…

Until I was sitting on a PR friend’s patio co-working and saw that someone had viewed my LinkedIn and sent me a connection request. I didn’t recognize the name so I asked my friend. She didn’t either. The industry is small so normally I have some kind of mutual so I always look. I went to her LinkedIn activity to figure out how we may be connected and saw she was working with the brand that got away, aka a brand I LOVED that 2 months earlier after many conversations and hitting it off told me they were going with another team (that one was a heartbreaker-maybe a story for another time). My initial thought was ugh why is this person trying to connect with me? Does she know I also talked to that brand? Is she trying to poach my other clients? Gah-overthinking overload. My friend pulled up the agency the woman worked at on her computer, “It’s weird, I’ve never heard of them,” she said as she scrolled through this PR agency’s website.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw a familiar face, “wait stop,” she stopped scrolling on the team page and as luck/misfortune would have it, the founder was no other than N herself. I didn’t recognize the agency name or website because in the 2 years and some change that had passed, it had transitioned to only PR services from the sales/marketing consulting and education services she offered previously. I don’t think my poor PR pal had seen me spiral like that. Fists were clenched, had to pace around and could not believe that this brand was working with this for lack of a better word, fraud (probably a bit extreme but I’m getting crankier as I type so give me this one ha).

I felt protective over them because I loved the brand long before I talked to them about PR and was a true brand evangelist. I considered writing them a long email about N’s shadiness and what happened but I didn’t. It wasn’t worth my relationship with them and I knew it would not come across the way I wanted. They’d likely see it as an effort to regain their business, I meant it as feeling angry that someone who took advantage of me, might be taking advantage of them.

There’s no real end to this story other than a reminder to stand up for yourself, take a breather and learn to do better next time. I’m not going to let this experience make me jaded or closed off to new connections or sharing my expertise when appropriate, but it can be a reminder that not everyone has good intentions. If you feel like something is off, it’s okay to say no, no more or not again. Everyone has their self-employed nightmares, this is far from my worst-should I share more?

Happy Friday!

I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and lots of great good, I made Alison Roman’s caramelized maple tart and YUM, perfect for the gals who don’t like pumpkin pie but want the ~vibes~.

Last week I had friends in town visiting and between walking 20+ miles a day, incredible meals and lots of much-needed quality time I spent a good chunk of time giving them tours of my pantry and fridge and every shoppy shop in the city. From client products to favorite goodies (and my hot takes on some of the trendy brands) there were a lot of opinions shared and bites and sips to be had.

During one of our food chats, a friend asked what I thought were the next up-and-coming brands and the ones that would be perfect for gifting this year (actual real thing that happened not in an influencer “so many of you have been asking” kind of way ha). While my mental list of next superstar brands is long, I do have some favorites that I think make perfect gifts that are beautiful, functional and delicious - my gifting trifecta! And made by good people ❤️

You probably have a zillion gift guides all over your feed and in your inbox so if you aren’t looking to buy gifts right now flag this for later when you are hunting for something new. A lot of these brands are doing BFCM sales right now too so if any catch your eye it’s a great time to snag them. This list is only the edible goodies, maybe I’ll have to make one for all the food-inspired gifts you can’t eat too. Gift-giving is my love language so I hope these are helpful, it was so much fun for me to put together.

For the friend who loves to host or has a sweet tooth but mayyybbee sets off the smoke alarm too often, these elevate basic boxed mix and make you look like a pastry chef. Grab a box or two and tie with a bow, add a whisk, fun sprinkles, cake knife or nice rubber spatula if you want to add a little something extra.

Olive oil olympics

A certain olive oil brand has dominated gift guides and Instagram feeds for the last two years and no hate to them but there are so many incredible brands with gorgeous olive oil worthy of your counter and pantry space too. These are perfect for the person who cooks a lot but also cares about their kitchen aesthetics (I also love that they come in tin (Olea comes in glass too) it just feels so fun and can help protect it from light.

There are so many brands doing incredible work when it comes to transparent sourcing of spices. No more crusty dusty jars taking up space in your pantry, give them the gift of flavor with a few jars of incredible spices. Nice spices are something a lot of people won’t buy themselves because prices can add up but a jar of two comes out under $30 and is a gift that keeps on giving. If you want to go the extra mile gift them with a favorite cookbook and dog-ear a recipe that uses the spices you chose or have a cute recipe card printed and tie on them with a bow.

The most important meal of the day

People are out here spending $50 on tinned fish and pasta and while I love a pantry item renaissance, breakfast hasn’t received the same love! The room between farmer’s market brown paper bags and name-brand grocery store boxes seems small but there are a few small brands bringing artisan flavors and beautiful packaging together that deserve a spot in your pantry and your morning routine.

I’m a hot sauce girl through and through, I love spicy food and often find myself thinking every meal could use more heat. While I love Sriracha and Tabasco and all the classic players, I also love a specialty brand that uses flavors you don’t often see in the category. I have different hot sauces, chili oils and crisps that all have their unique place in my cooking but I selected just two of my current favorites. They aren’t too too spicy so if you can handle a bit of heat you’ll be fine with a few drops!

I don’t drink coffee but I’ve seen the pile of coffee bags my coffee-loving dad has been gifted year after year. While it’s a sweet, and often useful gift there is such a thing as too many beans. Especially when it comes to gifting people you may not know as well and in turn, don’t know their coffee set up (Nespresso, cold brew, French press, Chemex) opt for a coffee-adjacent gift that is as thoughtful as it is delicious - don’t worry it’s not another mug. For those of you longtime lurkers and friends, you know the drill but for anyone new or in need of a refresh-let’s dig in!

I’m Delaney, a 20-something Copywriter, Recipe Developer and PR Strategist primarily helping food and beverage brands find, tell and share their story (and snacking a lot along the way). For the last 3 years I’ve been growing my business, living that lovely but complicated self-employed life and have had the opportunity to work with some pretty incredible brands. While I’ve always been obsessed with food, my client roster didn’t always reflect that, mostly because I fell into all of this somewhat by accident (a story for another substack).

Back in 2021, I was in the midst of pivoting my client roster to food brands and was feeling super burned out by the work I was doing with brands that weren’t super aligned with my interests and values. I had one food client I had just started working with and felt like I needed a creative outlet and more opportunities to think and write about food. Carving out space to write just for me, with my byline attached was something I was craving.

From there “Let’s Dig In” was created as a monthly newsletter interview series where I sat down over Zoom with women in food that I thought were doing something different or were personally inspiring to me. The goal was to get myself out of a creative rut and to give these founders space to share their story. To my very pleasant surprise, people loved the series, I was so proud of every issue and so grateful for every founder’s time and honesty. I spent hours laying everything out and designing them and got the sweetest love notes from friends and strangers who enjoyed reading along.

It wasn’t all Shirley Temples and sundaes though…

I had interviewees no-show their scheduled times (more than once), companies go under before I was able to hit “publish” and one interview that was unusable. With a demanding client load, dedicating that amount of time and energy to a project that I wasn’t getting paid for, and wasn’t really a client acquisition tool just wasn't in the cards at that time.

I beat myself up for not being able to keep up with the monthly schedule and carve out time for this project I loved so much. I haven’t published an issue in over a year (and still paying that monthly Flodesk fee-whoops) and while it wasn’t a decision to stop all together, I think it was time to pivot to make it something that works a bit better for me where I’m at now and also something that will be more fun and functional for readers.

I’m still determining what exactly this space will be but some things you can expect: stories about my work, musings on food business and food culture (I have a lot of thoughts), recipes, some personal essays maybe, favorite foodie finds from snacks to dips to best restaurant meals and hopefully some interviews too, (and let me know what you’d like to see/know!) I’m not committing to any set publishing schedule quite yet but hope to get on one soon so stay tuned on that.
