The Detour: Cymru am byth

I’ve just arrived back from a whistle stop tour of North Wales — a strange mix of quarry karting adrenaline and sunset stillness.

There was personal weight to it too. It’s where my foster parents still live.

If you read my latest reflection, A Detour On The Road To Integrity, you’ll remember my premonition about returning. It didn’t feel straight-forward.

Some of you wondered why I’d return at all. The truth is: I wondered too.

Returning to a home that never really felt like yours always pulls a thread through past and present — one that’s been tugging quietly for years.

It surprised me. It felt lighter. I might even say I loved it.

Rest Stop: Sunday Scaries

Talking of preemptive fears, as I arrive back to Oxford this Sunday evening, I’m planning the next few months of life in motion. More returns, more trips and some life updates.

Planning ahead, I have an overarching sense of gratitude for the life I’m living now. After years of the 9-5, Monday-to-Friday “Sunday Scaries” I now can’t remember the last time I panicked at 5pm on a Sunday that:

I still hadn’t sent that email I was meant to 3pm on Friday.

Not everyone can (or would want to) live this kind of nomadic rhythm. So for those still in the grind: I feel you.

The week’s coming. The inbox is back. “Next week” has turned into six.

You’re building an empire, or just feeding the cat — but there’s laundry, emails, maybe even tears waiting.

Not every demon needs to be slayed tonight.

Some just need naming. That’s enough.

Whether you’re entering your week with 500 unread emails or not, tomorrow morning will be just fine. You’ve done plenty already.

It’s the last week of August, you’re probably on holiday anyway.

But, if you’re spiralling: drink water, light something expensive, and block your ex on IG (again).

Over The Horizon: The Great Ego Wars

Many of you saw Nothing. Some of you followed the breadcrumbs onto The Nothing. List.

It was never noise. It was intimacy.

If you missed it, you’re still wanted. The door will open again, quietly.

Before then, a new LIDD Report, my most popular series so far, will be out soon. Going back in time to when Freud, Adler and Jung were the influencers who declared a war in Vienna. A quarrel that still competes to define how we should live.

LIDD Report #3 won’t just do historical due diligence — it will meditate on the ego wars still shaping us today.

Social media is a behavioural ecosystem first — not just a tool for connection. Every platform converging their features into the same doom loop reshaping how we live:

attention > performance > monetisation > burnout.

I plead Guilty.

My personal IG has always been more Instagram than reality.

Featuring #travelgrams and some over-edited pout selfies. Hello, display picture.

A misplaced Mykonos selfie used as the face for my story-with-substance page — the only criticism my friend could muster when I asked for feedback on my writing.

When I was on burnout leave last year, I went on a hiatus from posting my usual curated lifestyle porn — really only posted for that guy anyway.

Performance was all I understood from the ‘gram. But I knew it was all fake.

Meta knows it too. The leaking of a 2021 Facebook study showed 91% of young people use social media, even as it increased their anxiety and depression levels.

Vulnerable populations too. Users from lower socioeconomic backgrounds have higher addiction scores, with a 3:11 daily usage ratio compared to higher-income users.

We’re all addicted to the doom loop that’s perpetuating our internalised shame.

Even at 33, I’m still posting over-edited pout selfies.

My show returned with a new act: lifestyle.integrity. Now branded with sincerity.

I came to Substack for the substance. A platform marketed as a calmer, slower alternative. An online space that should be able to embrace the nuance in our contradictions.

For the last two weeks, I’ve been watching a Substack growth guru share how he gained 24 subscribers on Substack without posting for 7 days — whilst unironically posting 4 times a day, every day.

But this clout-spaining isn’t an insightful contradiction; it’s another absurd performance.

He’s not alone. I was welcomed to the site with a feed flooded with viral posts of:

“Dear Substack algorithm…connect me with people with less than 500 subscribers”

against the purist propaganda of:

“I love Substack, it’s the anti-social media”.

The anti-social media, social media feeding the algorithm with “anti-algorithm” content.

A gamified growth tactic. Dressed in Helvetica.

Even the “free speech warriors” are just preaching to their cell mates — in Elon’s virtual prison. Every platform is another performance, for a new niche.

Curation is the new censorship. And we’re doing it ourselves.

Trying to talk about this with content creators is another absurdity.

I sarcastically shared the opening of Lifestyle Integrity’s subscriber chat with a thread created by a creator of some “masc” content. He replied with his thoughts about a cross-promotion — apparently, I wasn’t on brand.

Perhaps the connotations of a gay talking about burnout is too “fem” for his brand. Who knows.

Whilst back in the real world, as I was writing this in a gay pub in Oxford I met a local business owner.

A “traditional” straight man who frequented the LGBT venue — just because he enjoyed the welcoming vibe and meeting different people.

We had a pleasant conversation about local businesses and gay vs straight night culture, whilst he calmly enjoyed his pinot.

Lifestyle Integrity’s POV

This is not a demand to delete your socials as some ideological fantasy of digital purity.

The system is here. We’re in it.

It’s a call to stop letting our identities be flattened by engagement metrics, niche branding strategies or the notification dopamine surge.

I may no longer be chasing the hourly targets and promotions.

But, in swapping my suit for a hoodie, I still need to be careful not to fall into the burnout trap — performative hustling for views and subscribers.

This isn’t just about social media. It’s about the damage of always performing to the systems you’re in.

You can’t delete the system, but you can choose who you are within it.

The job isn’t the enemy. Neither is the platform.

It’s the way we relate to them that could turn us into someone we never meant to be.

This isn’t lifestyle curation. This is Lifestyle Integrity.

20 subscribers. 92 Instagram followers. A handful of interactions.

And I’m just left with the silence that screams: No One Cares.

For someone like me, that thought isn’t about delusions of going viral on the back of some short reflections. It’s a chant racing around my head since childhood. One beyond the whimsical shallowness of the online world.

That’s what childhood trauma does to you.

Especially in the foster care system. A rotation in a system of performative care.

Of course, those experiences shape you. Those thoughts become the stories you tell yourself. The stories that creep into every interaction you have with the world.

Your purpose becomes perpetually chasing the missing childhood validation by any means necessary. Just for a moment of approval.

It just feels normal. Like this is everyone’s driver. But it’s not. At least, it shouldn’t be.

You can get the validation. The job title. The guy you like. The perfect trip. Your aesthetic goals. But it’s just temporary. Just a hamster wheel of performative dopamine validation disguised as something else.

When it doesn’t fulfil you, you blame the world once again. How dare it keep neglecting you. Even if this time, it may not be the world’s fault.

This year pushed this cycle to its peak. I left the job I’d worked a decade for. I moved to Tokyo. Chased love and other dreams.

And long story short. The love chase ended in neglect. A disaster spiralling into self-hatred, Tokyo night escapism and self-abandonment. The same cycle.

In my initial “unmasking” pieces, I kept complaining how modern life is holding me back from my inner self. But this new life has become another mirror of those childhood stories.

Still asking myself:

What’s the point in a 6-figure salary when it’s all spent escaping the apathy of it all?

What’s the point in dating when the inevitable avoidant always disappears, just because you cared?

What’s the point in writing when no-one gives a shit?

What is the point in any of this?

Especially when facing the tumbleweed of attention, it’s all just fuelling the extremes you’re trying to leave behind.

But this was where the story begins to change. It pushed me past the need for anything external, to look inward and ask the real question:

Do I give a shit?

I did. The disillusionment allowed me to see that being whoever I wanted to be in the moment was what I was really looking for.

Escapism turned into true freedom. Being myself night after night in Tokyo’s gay bars, weirdly, gave me some self-esteem.

I wasn’t pretending to be something else. I was just existing and enjoying. Even if drunk and chaotic.

After leaving Tokyo, I’m sitting here, writing by the pool in a five-star hotel in Mykonos. The same place I escaped to when I was on sick leave burnt out last year. Where I dreamed up a version of this life.

It’s my fifth year here, it’s an island where life is a bubble for most. Last year I came here broken. Then I came back fuller.

In looking back through from the burnout escape to leaving the job and from Tokyo chaos back to a peace found in the bubble, the epiphany arrived.

This wasn’t about other people at all. Not yet.

It was first about facing myself.

This writing does that. I’ve already made the jump. Even if no-one reads right now.

In fact, immediately facing the fact it wasn’t getting the external approvals I wanted deep down gave added value to the purpose of it all. It made me reflect deeper. Ultimately, I realised that it’s the action of doing it that makes me feel better, not any reaction to it.

The real lesson is that it’s not the world that haunts you in adulthood. It’s the way you approach it.

The stories you keep telling yourself. The ones you learnt from a performative childhood.

Looking inward is the solution. Not trying to fix people’s reactions to it.

I could give it all up. Go back to an outwardly easier life and earn more money, hide away from this. But I refuse. I have always refused what doesn’t feel right. That’s my integrity.

My strength is in my tenacity. Every fall becoming a lesson and rising again. Rewriting my story, and the stories I tell myself, as face the challenges of each new day.

This won’t be a success overnight. Becoming a lawyer wasn’t either. I studied. Worked for free. Slowly built up. Eventually I made it. To the top.

It took time. No-one cared as much as I did then either. Nor should they. I was doing it for myself. To escape my desperate origin.

Now I’m evolving. Escaping my emotional desperation. That’s the point. Living with integrity to myself.

Lifestyle Integrity is the point.

Not chasing validation. Or likes and successes for the sake of it.

But to build a life worth living for myself.

Because that’s my story. I go in. Fully. Sometimes scared. Sometimes shy. But fully. Bravely. Boldly. Beautifully.

I entered rooms I wasn’t welcome in before. Demanded I was taken seriously. But that was only a half-hearted transformation that got stalled by the systems I sought to change.

I will do it again.

Because I have a story to share. A voice that’s worth listening to with something to say. A unique and interesting point of view. A willingness and determination to see it through with integrity, whatever comes.

That’s the point of Lifestyle Integrity.

Rewriting narratives to live better.

For me. Maybe for you too.

I believe we curate our lives more than we live them. We are taught to prioritise the versions of ourselves most rewarded by the systems around us rather than pursuing the more difficult path of becoming who we really are.

Lifestyle Integrity begins with the question:

“Who are you if you let go of the performance?”

And, for me? Well, here’s a short reflection on how I got here.

A Curated Life

I started life in desperation. Growing up in poverty is one thing. Growing up with no family is another. There’s a certain freedom in desperation. Nothing to lose and all to gain. Absolute clarity that the only way to go is up. A blank canvas to build a perfect life.

I built my own successes. Not for money’s sake. I did not want a rags to riches story arc. I wanted an absolute escape from the clichés of the working-class identity I was born with. A hope that writing chapters of success would bury the origin story.

From City offices lined with Oxbridge polish to the old-money places where status was assumed, I scripted myself into worlds where boys like me should not be found. If I was, my past could be rewritten.

But it never was. In every job and in every relationship, the past came back to haunt me. Still, I performed a life designed to conceal the chips on my shoulder. Just enough.

A performance I’d been living since childhood: “I’m doing fine. Just don’t look over there.” Performed so well, even I believed it.

I had no idea who I was beneath it all. I craved sincerity but the hollowness of my life was seeping through. The career was unfulfilling. The lifestyle around it, meaningless. My health suffered. My relationships became transactional. It was unsustainable.

The act cost me more than it gave me. It became a darkness beyond the desperation. The cage I assembled in the name of freedom that left me feeling like letting go was the only way out.

The walls were breaking. I was at a crossroads. One where I could continue letting the enclosures I built destroy me and call it a victory. Or I let this one-dimensional character die. But, if I did, who was left?

For too long, I was too afraid to answer this. Even if I’d tried, I wouldn’t have known how. So, I did the only thing I knew. I persisted. I adapted. I redefined myself.

Nevertheless, the illusion had already cracked. Through the cracks, I caught glimpses of something else. A multi-dimensional being who had never been given the space to breathe. Someone I didn’t know yet, but needed to.

It took the final realisation that my last resort to save him was to burn it all down. To let the illusion die and begin again.

I left my career. I sacrificed my relationships. I even moved countries. I stripped my life down to nothing again to rebuild it with my own integrity. No more chasing what is deemed desirable or impressive. No more performing life.

The show was over. The mask had to come off.

A Life with Integrity

I’ve begun a new journey. One that seeks fulfilment as its destination, built on the foundations of truth. But old coding remains. The tension between exposure and freedom is still as terrifying as it is liberating.

This space is my next step in facing these fears as I stumble forward and begin to unlearn the performances I once mistook for identity. It’s my commitment to myself to stop performing and start living in alignment with who I really am.

That’s what I’m calling Lifestyle Integrity.

Every week I’ll share my discoveries. From reflections on emotional healing to lessons learnt about how we live and present ourselves, this space will be grounded in the idea that achievement means nothing without sincerity. No more fantasies of a one-size-fits-all self-help programme.

It’s a commitment to growing a community that values deeper connection, authenticity in the way you live, and honesty in how we engage with the contradictions and complexities of the world.

This is not about easy answers. It’s about asking honest questions.

An interrogation of what life becomes when we stop performing and start living with integrity.
