Today an incredibly special person has left this world, but her spirit and actions will live on for many years to come.

Dolly Parton, or better known as “Our Dolly” was a true angel walking amongst us.

Not only was she generous, in the true meaning of the word, but she was caring, witty, cheeky and wise.

I'm grateful for Dolly's example of kindness, inclusiveness, business acumen, philanthropy and daring to be a ground breaker, as I go through my own journey.

There are some important life lessons that we can learn from how Dolly lived:

She was empathetic to other’s situations and saw problems that needed solving, like children’s literacy.

She was supportive of others when they needed to know that somebody cared.

She turned her rhinestone persona into a thriving business, mixing philanthropy with shrewd investments and joy.

She kept trusted people close to her and protected them from unwanted outside scrutiny.

She used her talent as a singer and songwriter and entertainer to do good in the world.

Her groundbreaking actions served to pave the way for younger female entertainers, because what you see is what you believe you can do.

I know all this because I read Dolly’s autobiography some years ago and have kept her story close to my heart.

Dolly grew up dirt poor in the hills of Tennessee, USA.

She used her brains and her natural talents to build an empire.

Yes, she probably had doubts, big ones at that.

Yes, she probably cried with frustration when she met roadblocks.

Yes, she was probably hurt when people dismissed her as “just another good looking blonde”.

But did that stop her?

Did those negative thoughts and challenges change her overall trajectory?

No.

We will never know how many times Dolly had to pivot, give up on an approach, only to try something new.

But I’m so glad that she kept true to her vision.

She kept going.

With grace, good cheer, love and true human warmth.

Dolly taught us all how to keep going, with a smile on our face and a kind word for everyone.

Look to Dolly’s example.

Take heart that even in the depths of poverty, Dolly’s light shone brightly.

Know that you can be a leader who cares, who creates a safe space for people and who has integrity.

Know that your success is important for the world, because you too could be the next philanthropist who changes the world for the better.

Her journey reminds me of Marianne Williamson's famous poem:

Go forth today, feeling grateful for such a shining light as Dolly’s was, to guide you.

Apex Retail Solutions* is an online clothing boutique based in Sydney, Australia, run by a dedicated team of 25 people.

Last year, facing a massive surge in job applications, the founders integrated an Automated Decision-Making (ADM) tool into their AI recruitment pipeline. It was a lifesaver for their schedule: the software automatically scanned digital resumes, scored candidate profiles against keyword benchmarks, and filtered out applicants before human eyes ever saw them.

It streamlined their workflows beautifully. But it also created an unintended problem.

The Missing Piece: AI Privacy Policy Transparency

Apex didn’t update its public-facing privacy policy to reflect this new automated data flow. Because they use AI to make automated decisions that directly impact people (in this case, whether or not they get a job interview), changing laws require clear disclosure.

The team honestly assumed that because their annual turnover was under $3 million, they were fully covered by the Privacy Act small business exemption. They simply didn’t realise that using automated, algorithmic tools applies to any business bound by the Privacy Act as an entity.

What’s Changing at the 10 December 2026 Deadline?

Under the upcoming Australian Privacy Act reform automated decision-making is getting real attention and it’s going to have major implications for entities bound by the Privacy Act. Here’s the new wording:

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) is ensuring that everyday Australians know exactly when and how their personal information is being processed by algorithms, and how it might affect their lives.

The Australian Government has outlined clear timelines for these updates. If small businesses using automated tools haven’t updated their privacy disclosure documents and internal workflows by 10 December 2026, they could face significant regulatory actions.

For serious, ongoing non-compliance, maximum statutory penalties for corporate entities can theoretically reach up to $50 million AUD.

I’d just posted about women having shelved dreams, of writing, of expressing their thoughts and being seen.

I felt lonely in the big wide world of writing.

Creating new content and wishing that my “big break” would happen, soon.

Have you ever felt like that?

Like you’re a gerbil spinning the wheel constantly, with no end or reward in sight?

Sometimes it’s hard to keep positive, to give your all while wondering, “Am I good enough”?

Then a beautiful woman commented on my post, with words that lifted my spirits like a flower stretches to the sun’s warmth:

She said (and I’m paraphrasing here):

“We’ve finally have reached a time in life when we have freedom to stretch, grow, and dig deep into this lovely world of words.”

If she reads this, thank you for being so kind.

It meant the world to me.

It kept me moving forward.

It made me think about how important connection between people is.

How much generosity, kindness, understanding and helping each other means.

It means the earth.

Which reminds me of a young man years ago, who worked on my floor in corporate. He was soft spoken, well dressed and polite.

I talked to him about his weekend plans in the kitchen and he casually said “I’m not doing much”.

I walked back to my desk and kept working.

Didn’t feel any spider tingles on the nape of my neck, that something might be amiss.

I’m getting those tingles right now as I write this.

Because on the Monday morning after, our team lead told us that the young man had taken his life over the weekend.

I’ll never get over that.

I wish I had done more, been more aware, or something.

I didn’t see it coming.

I resolved to be more cognisant in the future.

To connect meaningfully with people.

To praise them, tell them how much I appreciate them and how they’re welcome to take some of my belief in them, to soldier on.

This being Memorial Day weekend for our American colleagues, a lot of memories about connections lost, hopes unfulfilled and shelved dreams rise to the top.

And to the serving (past and present) military, we appreciate your service and are here for you, if you need support.

The biggest thing I learnt out of the young man’s story and that Substack author’s kindness is that we need to support each other.

Whatever the outcome is, it will be.

But that shouldn’t stop us being good humans and there for each other in the meanwhile.

Last Tuesday night I sat in a slightly uncomfortable chair for two hours, with a group of 3,000 people I didn’t know, for an experience that I paid $210 for.

Professor Brian Cox is legendary in the field of cosmic physics, mathematics and the patterns of nature.

In his talk, Emergence, he examined the intricacy of the universe, from snowflakes to black holes, taking us inwards to the smallest building blocks of the universe and outwards to the largest structures.

One of my biggest takeaways was this:

The fact we exist at all is worth celebrating.

Our negative emotions: doubt, imposter syndrome, feelings of lack, fear of taking action, are generated within our minds.

And because they’re generated within us, we can change them.

Or we can choose to stay stuck, languishing and wondering “why me”, “why aren’t I rich, famous, thin, beautiful, in the C-Suite, a great creative…” and the list goes on.

Just think about this for a moment.

You contain all the essential building blocks of life.

Your being here is a miracle.

You’re not a single-cell organism.

You’re a complex, walking, talking, feeling container of potential.

Sometimes, to access that potential, you have to put yourself out.

You have to choose temporary discomfort to achieve long‑term expansion.

That two‑hour lecture cost me $210.

It was early in my career as a Business Analyst, and I was sitting at my desk trying to look busy while quietly spiraling inside.

Everyone around me seemed so fluent in the work. Confidently navigating systems, asking sharp questions, making decisions that felt impossibly obvious to them and impossibly complex to me.

Meanwhile, I was doing mental gymnastics just to keep up.

That day, the gap between how competent I wanted to feel and how competent I actually felt enormous. Like so many people early in their careers, I didn’t tell anyone. I just tried to hide it. Smile. Nod. Take notes. Hope no one noticed the panic simmering under the surface.

But someone did notice.

A senior BA, someone I respected deeply, stopped by my desk. He didn’t ask about my tasks or my progress. He simply asked how I was settling in. I must have given a vague, polite answer, because he paused, looked at me for a moment, and said:

“I hope you know that you’re already one of the strongest analysts on this team.”

I remember blinking at him, unsure whether I’d misheard. Strongest? Me? The person who had spent the entire morning convinced she was one question away from being exposed as a fraud?

He wasn’t joking. He wasn’t trying to make me feel better. He was telling me what he genuinely saw.

And something shifted in me.

Not instantly. Imposter syndrome doesn’t evaporate in a single conversation, but that moment became an anchor. A reference point. A quiet internal reminder that maybe the story I was telling myself wasn’t the whole truth.

His kindness didn’t just soothe my anxiety. It stabilised me. It helped me stop performing competence and start building it. It gave me the confidence to ask better questions, take on more responsibility, and eventually grow into a high‑performing member of the team.

Looking back, I realise that moment taught me something I now see over and over again in the people I work with:

Most of us aren’t struggling because we’re incapable.

We’re struggling because we’re feeling unsupported, unseen, or carrying a story about ourselves that isn’t accurate.

Sometimes all it takes is one person reflecting back a truer version of us, one we haven’t yet learned to believe.

Top Question #1. “How do the Creative Seasons affect my ability to perform at work?”

This one usually comes from professionals who are brilliant, capable, and quietly exhausted. People who’ve been taught to treat their creativity like a machine instead of a living system.

Here’s the simplest, gentlest way that I can answer:

Your performance isn’t just about skill. It’s about season.

A Restorer season will not give you the same output as an Expander season, and it’s not supposed to.

A Rebuilder season will ask for depth, structure, and recalibration.

An Explorer season will ask for curiosity, experimentation, and permission to not know.

When you understand your season, you stop fighting your natural rhythm.

You stop forcing productivity that isn’t available.

You stop judging yourself for not being in a season you’re simply not in.

And the wild thing is:
Performance improves the moment the pressure drops.

Because clarity is a form of energy.

Alignment is a form of efficiency.

And self‑honesty is a form of power.

Top Question #2. “Can the Creative Seasons help me make writing a sustainable income?”

This question usually comes from the writers, people who feel the calling to publish in their bones but can’t seem to turn it into something steady, grounded, or financially real.

My answer is always yes, but not in the way you’d expect.

Most writers try to build a writing career from an Expander mindset: “Be visible. Be consistent. Be everywhere.”

But sustainable writing rarely begins in Expander.

It begins in Restorer, where you reconnect with your voice.

It deepens in Rebuilder, where you create the systems, containers, and habits that make writing repeatable.

It evolves in Explorer, where you experiment with formats, platforms, and creative identity.

And only then does it move into Expander, where visibility becomes natural instead of forced.

The Creative Seasons Framework helps writers stop skipping steps.

Top Question #3. “I’m a coach trying to scale by business. How do the seasons apply to me?”

This one is my favourite because coaches often think scaling is purely a strategic problem.

But scaling is deeply seasonal.

A coach in Rebuilder will try to scale by refining their offer, tightening their boundaries, and strengthening their delivery.

A coach in Explorer will try to scale by expanding their identity, experimenting with new modalities, or shifting their niche.

A coach in Expander will scale through visibility, partnerships, and amplification.

And a coach in Restorer should not be scaling at all . They should really be recovering, integrating, and preparing for the next cycle.

The biggest mistake I see is this: You’re trying to scale from a season that cannot support it.

When you scale from Expander, it feels natural.

When you scale from Rebuilder, it feels grounded.

When you scale from Explorer, it feels creative.

When you scale from Restorer, it feels like self‑betrayal.

The Creative Seasons Framework gives coaches a way to scale without losing themselves, without forcing momentum that isn’t there, without collapsing under pressure, without building something that drains them.

Scaling becomes sustainable when it’s seasonal.

There’s a moment in the creative cycle that’s easy to miss.

Imagine a dense jungle with a clearing in the middle.

In the clearing a fattened goat is tethered to a post.

It’s bleating loudly and giving off a pungent smell.

To the parrots, monkeys and ants nearby, the goat is of little interest.

They might take a cursory sniff at the goat and wander off.

Not for me, they think.

The parrot wants flowers.

The monkey wants fruit.

The ants want seeds.

In this story, the goat is your irresistible offer,

The parrots, monkeys and ants are potential customers,

And the jungle is the online platform you’ve chosen to sell on.

Somewhere in this jungle, there are customers with a problem your offer can solve.

In this story, a hungry tiger is the perfect customer.

Its hunger is the number-one priority.

A problem that needs solving, today.

The tethered goat is bleating and its scent is wafting tantalisingly through the jungle.

That’s your offer messaging at work.

The tiger picks up the scent and starts to salivate.

Could this be the perfect solution to its problem?

The tiger consumes the goat and in the ensuing euphoria, also devours the extra pieces of meat that are nearby.

Buyers do the same.

When they find something that feels perfect, they enter a kind of “feeding frenzy”.

They buy the product, the upsells and even the bigger offers, because it all feels right.

And like the tiger, they return again and again because your offerings are perfect for them, and delicious!

Your offer connected because it spoke to their emotional state,

Just as Rory Sutherland explains in yesterday’s post Today I’m pondering about “buyer psychology”.

Buying is an emotional decision.

For the tiger, the emotion was hunger.

For your perfect customer, it might be the desire to save time, access steady support or stay motivated.

Do you have a problem that needs solving?

Every tiger has a moment when the scent cuts through the noise and everything becomes obvious.

I used to think that selling was like fishing…

You tie the shiniest lure you can find to the end of your fishing line.

Cast it out into the still blue water.

And hope that the perfect fish will swim by,

Be mesmerised by your lure (your product offer)

And “BAM”, there’s your fish (sale)!

The problem with this approach is that a lake, river or the ocean are huge bodies of water.

The fish could be anywhere.

You wouldn’t know.

The stress causes relentless fishing line casting.

After 15 minutes or so, in disgust,

Moving to a nearby spot on the bank, in the water or the beach,

Where you cast out again

Hoping for a different result.

Secretly I think that the fish are cleverer than we give them credit for.

They’re already waiting in the second location,

When we move there, they effortlessly glide over to our original location,

To resume their uninterrupted feeding on delicious weeds and water bugs.

What other answer could there possibly be?

Selling online seems a lot like fishing.

We create the “irresistible offer”

Following all the expert’s advice.

Launch our product, for example, into the Substack lake or FB ocean,

Hoping for the best.

When there aren’t any “nibbles”, aka sales,

We disappointedly move to another online site,

Try our luck there.

But the “fish” seem to have moved elsewhere.

How frustrating.

I’ve experienced this myself, many times.

I firmly believed

“I’m just no good at selling”.

That self-talk sabotaged me for years,

So much so that I would work 9-5 jobs

To sustain my family,

And procrastinate endlessly about trying to sell online.

Have you ever done that?

It sucks.

I know.

But those were my “bad old days”.

What did I do to turn this around?

Eventually I realised the problem wasn’t me, it was the way I understood selling.

I started watching Rory Sutherland’s talks on YouTube.

Rory is the Vice-Chairman of Ogilvy & Mather, a multi-national advertising agency.

He took over from David Ogilvy, who founded the business

And wrote: Confessions of an Advertising Man.

Well worth a read.

Rory refers to a wide range of case studies,

In every industry imaginable

Which all share one thread,

Buying is an emotional decision.

Even the hardest-core logical buyers,

Who demand to see the specifications,

The statistics and the guarantees,

Will eventually buy from the “gut feeling” they have.

Their minds justify the purchase through the presence of data,

But really it was their limbic system that pressed the “Buy” button.

Once I understood that buying is emotional, not logical, everything got easier.

How many times have you bought something,

Perhaps outrageously priced,

But justified the purchase with: “Oh, you only live once”?

I know I have.

It’s like we need a reason to give ourselves permission to buy.

“It’s the right thing to do.”

“It’s a high quality product.”

“I’ll make my money back in the long run.”

These are all emotional justifications we use to buy.

If you subscribe to Rory Sutherland’s way of thinking,

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with buying with emotion.

Here’s why this matters:

“The limbic system is one of the oldest structures of your brain. It produces natural instincts that your ancestors used to survive by triggering behaviors needed to:

• Eat and drink.

• Reproduce.

• Care for young.

• React to surroundings (fight or flight response).” [1]

Understanding this, I concur with Rory’s view…

Appealing to a buyer’s emotional side isn’t manipulative, it’s simply how humans make decisions.

And it’s the key to consistent sales.

Background

Sarah is a writer in her forties who has lived long enough to know the difference between a passing idea and a story with roots.

After 40 years as a Business Analyst, specialising in information technology,

And lecturing part-time in Strategic Management at the University of New South Wales for a couple of years,

I decided that I didn’t want to do the 40 hour week any more…

So I set up BALAB Australia as my own little, shiny solopreneur business.

I was so excited in the beginning.

I was prancing around like a baby goat!

Never made much money though.

Just as well I had savings to live off.

A couple of books under my belt,

That was admittedly a highlight.

I got lonely.

Once Upon A Time…

One of my clients, Maria*, sat at her desk long after the sun had set, her fingers flying across the keyboard.
