business.

There’s more value to having a solid TALK ready to go than most business owners realize.

Because most people don’t think of themselves as speakers. They think:

*I’m a real estate agent.

*I’m a coach.

*I’m a consultant.

*I’m a tax accountant.

*I’m an author.

*I’m a business owner.

So while they’re busy thinking about sales funnels, social media, email marketing, networking, lead generation and ALL the other ways to grow their business… they completely overlook speaking.

Except speaking can make nearly ALL of those things easier. Ask me how I know!

This has been my experience over and over again -- One great talk can put you in front of 20 ideal clients. Or 50, or 500.

One great talk can lead to a client, a referral, a podcast invitation. Another stage. A partnership. A media opportunity. A room you didn’t even know you needed to be in.And sometimes it happens in an instant.

You stand up, you share an idea, you tell a piece of your story. Then, someone in that audience thinks: I need to know her.

That’s the power of speaking.

But there’s a problem.

You have to have something READY when the opportunity shows up... and most business owners don’t.

WHY? Because they never took the time to turn what they know into a TALK.

So when someone says:

“Would you like to speak at our conference?”

“Could you come talk to our association?”

“We’d love for you to teach something at our next meeting.”

“Would you be interested in being on our podcast?”

Instead of saying HELL YES, they start scrambling. And nasty thoughts start running through their head that sound something like this:

“What would I talk about? Can I make it interesting enough? Do I know how to build a talk? Do I even have time to do this????”

And then they let the opportunity pass altogether-- because they weren’t ready.

Here’s the shift I want more of you to make:

Stop thinking about speaking as a separate career. Speaking doesn’t have to BE your business. Speaking can be a door INTO your business.

It builds trust faster. It builds authority faster. It creates relationships faster.

And yes — it can make sales and marketing a whole lot easier. And frankly, a whole lot more fun.

But you have to build the talk BEFORE you need the talk.

You need something you can stand up and deliver when somebody taps you on the shoulder and says:

“We’d love to have you speak.”

Those opportunities are closer than you think.

So my question for you today is:
If someone asked you to speak six weeks from today, would you be ready?

Tell me below

READY — I have a talk I could give.

or

NOT READY — I know I have something to say, but I haven’t built the talk yet.

I’m curious how many of you are sitting on the second answer.

I write The Unmuted Woman with a hope to inspire you and SPARK you to take bigger action with your story! I just knew what I’d witnessed during my many years as a television and video journalist.

I knew Storytelling was a centrifugal force behind every successful brand that audiences felt connected to. And, I knew I could somehow teach women how to share their story to help them build magnetic brands.

Along the way, storytelling also gave me a voice.

The journey of helping others tell their story, and getting radically visible telling my own, opened up doors of opportunity I never saw coming. The more visible I became, the more I experienced the unexpected.

Connections with people I would never have met otherwise grew.

Programs were born, and the teacher inside of me emerged (who knew?!?)

One workshop after another, free challenges that invited people into my courses, and the most dreamy private clients filled my roster.

Our private community grew from the initial 20 women I invited in at the start to over 6000 women.

My client roster grew from my first-ever client to thousands spanning across more than 20 different countries.

Speaking engagements turned into coaching programs. Coaching programs turned into retreats. Retreats turned into communities. Somewhere along the way, I found myself standing on stages, behind podcast microphones, inside Zoom rooms, and around dinner tables with women who all carried the same quiet question:

“Is my story enough?”

For eleven years, I’ve answered that question the same way.

Yes. Absolutely YES! Forever, the answer is YES.

But over the last year, something shifted in me. I realized storytelling was never actually the destination. It was the doorway.

What women are really searching for

The longer I’ve done this work, the more I’ve realized that women don’t struggle telling their story because they don’t know how. I’ve been teaching them how for more than a decade.

Nobody lacks information – there are more courses than ever. We have AI. We have Amazon. We have Spotify and YouTube. We have more $27 courses than we can shake a stick at, and most of them include easy templates, formulas, and frameworks. Have at it – it’s out there!

But what we DON’T have is all the women leaders sharing their story yet. Why??

Because many still feel stuck.

I believe it’s because they don’t have a safe place to flesh out their becoming.

Year after year, I’ve watched women consume incredible content... and still hesitate to press “publish.”

I’ve watched talented speakers write amazing talks... and still avoid pitching themselves, never landing the stages that would give them a return on their investment.

I’ve watched gifted writers fill notebooks with words... but never share them with the world.

Knowledge isn’t usually the missing piece.

Practice is.
Encouragement is.
Community is.

You simply need a ROOM where those things are unfolding.

The rooms changed everything

Some of my favorite moments from the last eleven years didn’t happen on stages. They happened in rooms.

*A woman finally sharing a story she’s carried for decades.

*Someone reading their writing aloud for the first time.

*A new speaker delivering her message to a small peer group before taking the bigger stage.

*The conversations that happen after the official meeting ends.

Those moments have reminded me again and again that transformation doesn’t happen because someone watched another training video.

It happens because someone showed up.

It happens because someone was witnessed.

It happens because someone found the courage to use their voice while other people quietly cheered them on.

That’s the kind of work I’ve fallen in love with. The kind that helps women UNMUTE themselves!

This is what has changed for me...

I no longer want to build courses. I want to build rooms.

Rooms where women can explore their writing, practice their speaking, get access to podcasts and other media outlets.

Rooms where you can listen, contribute, experiment, and grow!

Rooms where you can live out your becoming.

Authors don’t become authors because they publish, nor do speakers become speakers because they step on a stage. Those titles are earned during the process. During your becoming, when you unmute yourself and get into the arena.

I’m not making this shift because some coach told me to, or because I watched an online armchair expert espouse their own success doing it this way.

I’m making this change because my soul is craving it, which I suspect means yours is, too!

Maybe this is what becoming an Unmuted Woman really looks like

When I first started talking about becoming an Unmuted Woman, I thought I was talking mostly about speaking up.

Now I think it’s even bigger than that.

An Unmuted Woman doesn’t just find her voice. She uses it regularly even when there are only a few people in the room, no one in the room, or perhaps everyone is in the room.

The Unmuted Woman doesn’t wait to feel more confident. She shows up in the room because she knows showing up and putting in the reps is what it takes. That’s where confidence is brewed.

The next 11 years…

As I celebrate eleven years of LIGHTbeamers, I find myself feeling less interested in asking, “What should I teach next?”

Instead, I’m asking,

“Who do I want to be around next?”

I believe this stage is not about what we know but who we know. And who we are rallying around. And who we are listening to.

Because I believe the future belongs to communities that help people practice, not just learn. Implement, not just consume. Take steps forward, not stay stuck!

Places where women can bring unfinished ideas, messy first drafts, rough concepts, and stories still unfolding.

That’s the kind of community I want to build.

Actually...

It’s the kind of community I think I’ve been building all along; I just didn’t have the language for it yet.

Next week, we’re opening the doors to something I think you’ll love if anything I’ve said here resonates with you.

For one week only, I’m hosting a special “Open House” with LIVE Rooms every day so you can experience what this community is all about.

If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to grow your voice alongside women who genuinely want to see you succeed, I hope you’ll join us.

You can RSVP and see the full OPEN HOUSE schedule here:
www.lightbeamers.com/rooms

I’d love to welcome you into the room.

The Unmuted Woman is a reader-supported publication. really have a story.”

Every time someone says those words, I pause. Not because I’m surprised by their words (I’ve talked to many women who think this), but because I know what they mean.

They aren’t saying they haven’t lived through anything meaningful.

They don’t mean their life has been ordinary.

What they really mean is – they’ve convinced themselves that what they’ve experienced isn’t important enough to share.

And somewhere along the way, we’ve taught women to believe exactly that.

We’ve created this invisible hierarchy of stories.

The dramatic stories.
The bestselling stories.
The viral stories.
The comeback stories.

The stories that seem worthy of stages, books, and microphones.

Everything else? We deem unimportant. Not meaningful enough to be useful. We minimize it. So, we tuck it away.

We tell ourselves,
That wasn’t a big deal.

Other people have survived worse.

I’m still figuring it out.

Who would want to hear my story anyway?

I’ve heard every version of this.

And after spending more than three decades in storytelling and visibility —first as a television producer and journalist, and now helping entrepreneurs, authors, and leaders use their voices—I can tell you something with complete confidence:

The issue has never been that women don’t have stories.

The issue is that too many women have muted themselves.

We’ve mistaken visibility for performance.

Somewhere along the way, visibility became another thing to perfect.

Post more.

Build your platform.

Grow your audience.

Improve your personal brand.

Be more polished.

More strategic.

More optimized.

None of those things are inherently bad, but they miss something fundamental. Visibility isn’t about becoming louder. It’s about becoming more honest because the version of you that people connect with is rarely the most polished one. It’s the most human one.

The story you almost didn’t tell.

The lesson you learned the hard way.

The failure that reshaped you.

The season that humbled you.

The question you’re still wrestling with.

Those are the stories that make people stop scrolling.

Why? Because the listener/ reader sees themselves in it. Your story has a piece of their story included. It’s recognizable and relatable.

Now, we’ve entered the phase of content creation that is all about ‘yapping’. It seems social media got the message and now even relatability is on display. Now, you gotta talk on video, in your most casual, relatable scene, and scrunch your message into a minute-thirty video. You gotta be real so your reel gets reach.

STOP! What game are we playing?

This is why playing just the content game will never produce the results you truly desire.

The storytelling game allows you to go deeper. To put realness in front of people, not for engagement, but for connection.

Someone reads your words and quietly thinks,

“I thought I was the only one.”

That’s the moment connection begins.

Stories don’t just connect us, they transfer courage.

I’ve watched this happen hundreds of times in rooms I’ve facilitated.

One woman decides to tell the truth. She shares the story she’s carried for years—the one she’s edited, minimized, or buried because she wasn’t sure it mattered. When she’s finished, something remarkable happens. Another woman raises her hand and says, “I’ve never shared this before...” then another untold story comes to light.

Then another.

And another.

Before long, the room feels different.

Because someone was brave enough to go first – they unmuted themselves – and gave everyone else permission to do the same.

That’s the real power of storytelling.

Stories don’t simply communicate information; they create permission.

Permission to heal.

Permission to dream bigger.

Permission to ask for more.

Permission to leave.

Permission to begin again.

Permission to speak.

Courage is contagious. And stories are often how it’s transmitted.

This is why I believe the world doesn’t need more content.

It needs more women who are willing to stop muting themselves.

We’re living in a time where it’s easier than ever to publish something.

Every day, millions of posts, videos, podcasts, and newsletters compete for our attention. Despite all that content, genuine connection feels increasingly rare.

Why?

Because so much of what we share has been filtered through the question,

“How will this perform?”

Instead of,

“How will this connect?”

Performance builds vanity metrics. Honesty builds trust. And trust changes lives.

Becoming an Unmuted Woman

This is the idea I’ve been returning to over and over lately. It’s the very reason I wanted to start my Substack.

To me, becoming an Unmuted Woman isn’t about becoming famous.

It isn’t about building a massive platform.

It isn’t about having all the answers before you speak.

It’s about becoming fully expressed.

It’s choosing to stop apologizing for your voice.

It’s recognizing that your lived experience carries wisdom someone else may desperately need.

It’s refusing to keep editing yourself just to make everyone else comfortable.

Because every time you mute yourself, your children lose the example of a woman who speaks with conviction. Your community loses your perspective. Your industry loses your leadership. And somewhere, someone who needed to hear your story keeps believing they are alone.

Your voice has consequences.

So does your silence.

This is where we begin.

You don’t have to become an expert, or write a bestselling book, or land the biggest stage to share your voice.

It starts by asking a question:

Instead of thinking, “I don’t have a story,” what if you asked yourself, “Who do I get to become by telling it?”

I don’t think the world changes because a handful of people become louder.

I think it changes because ordinary women decide to stop muting the extraordinary wisdom they’ve collected through living.

That’s the invitation — To tell the story. To write the article. To raise your hand. To speak into the microphone. To finally have the conversation you’ve been rehearsing in your head for years.

Because your voice matters, and it has the potential to make a real impact on someone else.

A Seat at the Table

If you’re reading this and something inside you is whispering, I’m ready...— Welcome!!

This is what The Unmuted Woman is all about.

Every week, I write about storytelling, speaking, visibility, leadership, and the often messy work of becoming more fully ourselves. Sometimes I’ll share practical strategies I use every day as a professional storyteller and the tools I share with my clients to help them become more visible with their story. Sometimes I’ll tell stories from my own life. Sometimes I’ll offer words I hope find you at exactly the right moment.

If these ideas resonate with you, I’d love for you to subscribe. Whether you’re here as a free reader or choose to become a paid member, I hope this publication becomes a place where you feel seen, challenged, and encouraged.

And if you’re ready to move from reading into practicing, my paid subscribers are also invited into The Story Studio—our live gathering place where women write, speak, share stories, and grow alongside one another. We meet weekly inside live “rooms” focused on Speaking, Writing, Podcasting, and Storytelling. As a paid subscriber, you can attend as many of these rooms as you like! They are standalone events because the magic of the room is created by those who attend live that day. If you miss one, it doesn’t keep you from stepping into the next one. You aren’t behind or late. The rooms are created for you whenever you’d like to attend. With multiple rooms offered throughout the month, I think you’ll find The Story Studio a refreshing place to land!

Consider joining our paid subscription, and join our next Room.

Voices don’t grow in isolation. They grow in rooms.

I’ll keep building those rooms until every woman who has spent years whispering finally remembers what it feels like to speak in her full voice.

Welcome to The Unmuted Woman. Most people don’t struggle with visibility because they lack information. They struggle because they feel alone.

They wonder:

Who am I to share this?

Will anyone care?

What if I fail?

What if I get it wrong?

What if nobody listens?

The women I’ve watched grow the fastest weren’t always the most talented.
They were the most connected.

They had people around them. People cheering them on. People holding them accountable. People reminding them who they were when they forgot.

In other words... They had a room.

And maybe that’s what visibility really is. Not standing on a stage by yourself.
But finding a room where you’re brave enough to become visible. And from that place of connectedness, you DO become much more visible.

You no longer fear stepping on stages.
You are eager to go share your story.
Sitting down to write the book becomes the obvious next step!!
You see a fruits of your labor with more people being magnetized to you as a result!
And… your business grows!

You want to know what grew my business?? The Lightbeamers Community did.
In the beginning, for two solid years, I focused on building community. It was from inside that community my own sense of belonging took root and I became so clear & confident about how I could help women tell their story that programs were born.

It’s not:
1. Get visible.
2. Share your offers.
3. Grow community.

It’s:

Get in the room (community).

Share your offers.

Grow your Business and become more visible in the process.

I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately and realizing the secret sauce all along has been Community.

As a result, I’m excited to be opening more “rooms” this summer where members of our Community can experience this for themselves.

The Rooms will help you get visible, and we’ll definitely be talking about the things I mentioned above: Your story, speaking, writing, podcasting, media, etc.
But we’ll do it in a community environment. More conversational than “buy a course”. You’ll simply learn by being in the room. Wisdom will be shared, ideas sparked, resources given.

As I build these, some rooms will be made available immediately while others will require a purchase, to keep the integrity of the rooms in tact.

The first community room I’m opening is a Writing Room on June 16th at 1pm CST. For this first experience in the Writing Room, I’m going to share a few writing tools and give some fun writing exercises. You do NOT need to be an established writer to attend. All you need is your own curiosity and willingness to explore writing as a form of expression. No one will be judging your writing. This is just for you!

Join me in the Writing Room on June 16th at 1pm CST

Add to Your Calendar

There’s a bigger room I’m building for Speakers. It’s called Keynote Camp. This is a 90-day working room for women who know they have a bigger message to share with more people. Inside the 90-day room, I’ll help you crystalize your message and wrap it up in a legitimate thought-leadership-style talk. shakes. Where you walk into the room already certain. Where fear has been fully, permanently defeated — and then you finally start.

I used to believe that version. And honestly? I think it’s kept more talented women silent than almost anything else I know.

Because we keep waiting for confidence to arrive before we allow ourselves to begin.

This is the kind of stuff I hear from women regularly:

“Once I feel more ready, I’ll share my story.”
“I’m just too nervous to put myself out there.”
“I just don’t know what to say or what to talk about.”

But confidence doesn’t work that way. It was never supposed to.

What mastery actually looks like.

Mastery and confidence come with reps.

Keep in mind that the glamorous stuff you see online is the result of the reps you didn’t see that person put in.

I think about the first podcast interviews I did. The first stages I stood on. The first videos I hit record on. None of it felt natural. I was doubting and second-guessing many things in those early days. But I didn’t let that stop me. I showed up. I shared my story. I shared my ideas and expertise to help others.

Did you catch that last part? …to help others!

Along the way, I got better. I become more confident. The more I heard my own voice, watched my own videos, and reread my own words, the more my mastery took shape.

Not because fear disappeared. But because repetition built familiarity. The reps changed me.

And by putting in the reps, it paved the way for me to publish 3 bestselling books (with a fourth one on its way), become a sought-after women’s empowerment speaker, and be in the top 1.5% of global podcasts.

I didn’t get there because I was confident in the beginning. I got there because I started.

Master is built in private. Quietly. Behind the scenes. Way before that good-looking Instagram post or polished speaker reel.

One imperfect attempt at a time.

I’m applying this teaching even as I write this as I build out my Substack presence. I wasn’t here two weeks ago.

One article. One note. One live video. One brave moment after another.

The thing about discomfort

Here’s what I watch happen constantly with women who are trying to become better communicators and speakers:

They take their first few reps. It feels uncomfortable. And then they decide that discomfort is a sign they shouldn’t continue.

But discomfort isn’t a stop sign.

It’s evidence you’re stretching into something new.

The first rep is awkward. The tenth rep is still uncomfortable. The hundredth rep starts to feel familiar. And eventually — without realizing exactly when it happened — what once felt impossible becomes part of who you are.

What this actually means for you

I don’t know what your “reps” look like right now.

Maybe it’s writing. Maybe it’s speaking on camera. Maybe it’s sharing your story with an audience that actually matters to you. Maybe it’s learning to structure what you say so it lands the way it deserves to.

But here’s what I know: you don’t have to feel confident to begin.

You just have to take the next rep.

And if you want help figuring out what those reps should look like — and how to make every one of them count — that’s exactly what we work on inside our paid community, The Spark Club.

Each month, we go deep on the storytelling and speaking skills that actually move the needle for people. I host monthly live calls, deliver exclusive trainings, and create a space to practice alongside women who are taking their reps seriously.

Join us in our Paid Community, The Spark Club for $59/year:

Subscribe now

Because the confidence you’ve been waiting for was never going to show up first. It was always being built — rep by rep — by the woman who decided to start anyway.

Surround yourself with other action takers!

One thing is for sure: I’m cheering for you!!

XO,
APRIL

Find your Light as a Fiddle Fig

If you aren't growing, you're dying. I’ve named her Barbara. She’s a Fiddle Fig — a famously difficult plant to keep alive. I had no business buying her to begin with, as my keeping-plants-alive record is abysmal. They must have misspoken when they named this particular breed of plants, as they should be called “Fickle” Figs, in my opinion.

She first let me know she was in distress when she started dropping her leaves. One by one, she became nothing more than a tall, skinny stalk with just a few leaves hanging on for dear life. But there was hope in the signs of new growth sprouting from the bottom, so I got busy figuring out ways to encourage her to thrive once again.

I’ve talked to her, watered her, fed her, moved her around to different sun spots in the house — all the while trying to decode her happy place. I believe I’ve finally hit the jackpot as she currently sits in the window by my dining room table, continuing to sprout new leaves and grow.

While it’s been a little frustrating to figure her out, I recognize I’m a lot like Barbara. We all are.

We have to keep moving around to find the places where we can truly thrive. Where we feel most at home. Where we can sprout our own new leaves and activate our voices.

I’ve spent the past 10 years working with women leaders, helping them find their voice through storytelling. We’ve launched speakers, authors, podcasters, and changemakers onto bigger visibility platforms by teaching them how to harness the power of their own personal story.

The process has been a lot like Barbara’s. While some women seemed inherently ready, others have needed more cajoling. Ultimately, when they found their own ‘happy place’, I watched them thrive. Whether it’s writing a book, speaking on stages, or launching a podcast — the process is a bit like moving around until the light shines just in the right spot.

If I’m being honest, I’ve been like Barbara, too. Feeling my own voice constrict, I’ve held myself back at times, opting for safety and comfort rather than pushing myself past fear to say what it is I really wanted to say. Societal and Feminine conditioning is a bitch.

In 2026, as I entered my 11th year in business, I kept sensing this message from God saying, “What got you here won’t get you there.” And for much of 2026, I have felt myself pulling back from the many things that “got me here” — an active presence on social media, loads of online marketing, hosting many webinars and challenges, and plenty of speaking engagements in other people’s communities and organizations.

As I moved Barbara around my house and poured water over her with encouraging words, I felt a deepening kinship with this creature whose mystery of ‘happy place’ I’ve dared to unlock.

Where I once thrived no longer feels interesting to me. I didn’t become a business owner so that I could spend my days becoming a marketing guru. Following online trends and the advice of every other internet gazillionaire promising me results if I just enrolled in their 40K program has left me disenchanted, unengaged, and honestly, a little (a lot!) disgusted.

What got me here won’t get me there, and I’m okay with that if it means what will get me there is something that feels more authentic, aligned, and aspirational.

Don’t get me wrong! I’m still here to activate women’s voices and support them on the journey to landing bigger visibility through their writing and speaking.

But first, we gotta move things around a little bit.

If you aren’t growing, you’re dying. I’ve come to realize that where I have planted myself for the past 10 years is no longer producing the best LIGHT for me to grow.

Social media feels toxic
Email marketing feels crowded (my own inbox is sitting at 63,158 unread emails)
Even my own Community is quiet. Not because people have gone away, but because the algorithms on Facebook have stopped encouraging participation. I no longer want to play that game. I am completely done.

I refuse to accept the status quo. And my voice is feeling antsy. It’s time to move, take action, and speak up. I will not remain mute.

Hence, here I am. I’m officially adopting Substack as my new home. Returning to my roots as a writer feels exciting and fresh. Taking up space on a platform that encourages long-form content and community-building feels authentic, aligned, and aspirational.

Here, I will write under the publication “The Unmuted Woman” and I am writing for the woman who knows her message and story belong in rooms, stages, podcasts, books, and more. It’s for the authors and speakers who recognize the LIGHT you need to thrive is found in your own voice.

Substack is where I intend to build Community. I’ve done it before, but I’m planning to remove my Community from Facebook. I desire a platform that encourages honest communication, content that isn’t AI-produced, and voices that know they have something to say. People like me want to be surrounded by people like you.

No more 30-second reels, meaningless social media posts, engagement tools.

Just my words — unmuted.

I think I found my happy spot. I’m excited to plant myself here for a while and discover how I can bloom, and how I can help you bloom, too. I’ll be offering a paid tier for subscriptions that will house much of my developed training and support. It is also where I see Community developing the most, and I’m excited about it!

Subscribe now

If you believe in the power of storytelling and using your own story to shine a LIGHT in the world, The Unmuted Women is ready to shine some light on you!

If you are here reading this, one of my very first articles, thank you! I’m eager to get busy writing more for you and to see where our voices take us!

You’ll hear me say this a lot, but I truly mean it — I’m cheering for you!

XO
APRIL

**A Note from the Author:
I use a crapton of em dashes— .
This does NOT mean I’ve used AI to help me write. What I promise here is my unfiltered words, thoughts, ideas, and best storytelling teaching I can give to help you become the most unmuted version of yourself. I plan to do it the hard way: by writing every word myself and allowing my ideas to shine.
