Not the measured, textbook, “I hear that you’re frustrated” thing. The other thing. The sharp one. The one that came out of your mouth before your brain signed off on it.. louder than you meant, meaner than you meant, aimed at a person who is still learning how to regulate a nervous system you, an adult with three decades of practice, just failed to regulate yourself.

Your kid went quiet. Or cried harder. Or said “you’re scaring me.” And now you’re standing in the wreckage of your own morning, doing the math on how bad the damage is, and whether you’re a good parent who had a bad five minutes or a bad parent who’s been getting away with pretending otherwise.

Here’s what I want you to know before we go any further: losing your regulation is not a moral failure. It’s a nervous system event. You were flooded.. same as your kid gets flooded.. and flooded brains don’t have access to their best selves. That’s not an excuse. It’s a mechanism. And mechanisms can be worked with. Character flaws can’t.

But here’s the part most parenting advice skips straight past: knowing why it happened doesn’t repair the relationship. Feeling guilty about it doesn’t repair the relationship. Only repair repairs it.. and repair is a skill, same as any other. Most of us never got taught it, because the adults who raised us didn’t do it either. They apologized with silence, or with a treat that never named what happened, or they never mentioned it again and just expected you to forget.

Your kid isn’t going to forget. But they will learn.. from watching you do this.. that ruptures are survivable, that people who love each other can come back from a bad moment, and that accountability doesn’t equal weakness. That’s a bigger lesson than almost anything else you’ll teach them this year.

The one teachers describe as “a dream.” The one who says sorry before you’ve even finished explaining what happened. The one who says “I’m fine” so fast it’s almost reflexive.. before you’ve asked, sometimes before anything’s even gone wrong yet. The one who scans your face when they walk in the door, checking your mood before they’ve said hello.

Everyone tells you how lucky you are. She’s so easy. He’s never any trouble.

And you smile and say thank you, because what else do you say.. and somewhere underneath that, quietly, you’re not sure “easy” is the right word for what you’re actually watching.

You’re right not to be sure.

We’ve spent three installments now on the same nervous system reflex, showing up in different costumes. Freeze.. the shutdown, the going-somewhere-else. Flight.. the escape, the bolting, the refusal. Fight.. the hit, the shove, the fastest exit available. All three get noticed. All three get a name, a strategy, a “here’s what to do.” All three, eventually, get you looking for help.

The fourth branch doesn’t get any of that. It gets a compliment.

Fawn is the stress response that looks like good behavior. Instead of running, freezing, or fighting, the nervous system reaches for a different exit: make the threat go away by becoming whatever the room needs you to be. Agreeable. Compliant. Undemanding. Quiet. The nervous system has learned.. correctly, from its point of view.. that safety comes from not being a problem.

This is the one I most need you to take seriously, because it is dangerous in a way the other three aren’t: it doesn’t cost anything visible in the moment. A fawn response doesn’t interrupt dinner. It doesn’t get flagged in a parent-teacher conference. It gets praised. Which means the very thing that should worry you is the thing everyone around your child.. teachers, grandparents, sometimes you.. is quietly reinforcing.

You’ve read about restraint collapse before, in the after-school context.. the kid who holds it together for seven hours at school and falls apart the second they’re in the car with you. That’s not a coincidence sitting next to this topic. Restraint collapse is the fawn response’s invoice. Every hour spent monitoring the room, suppressing the real answer, performing “fine” ..it’s metabolically expensive. It has to be paid somewhere. And it almost always gets paid at home, with you, because you’re the only place it’s safe enough to stop performing.

So if your “easy” kid turns into your hardest kid the second the front door closes.. that’s not a switch flipping for no reason. That’s the bill coming due for a whole day of fawning somewhere else.

Here’s the part I want to sit with you in for a second: if this is your kid, there is very likely a moment.. maybe more than one.. where the fawning worked. Where being agreeable made an adult’s frustration disappear, made a scary moment pass faster, made them feel briefly, temporarily safe. Their nervous system learned that lesson honestly. It’s not manipulation. It’s not a personality trait. It’s a survival strategy that got reinforced because it’s the strategy that makes everyone else’s day easier.. which is exactly why it’s the one nobody thinks to interrupt.

Or it wasn’t your arm. It was your face. Or it was your glasses, knocked off and skidding across the floor. Or it was your other kid, the one who was just trying to walk past.

And underneath the sting.. because there is a sting, even when it doesn’t hurt.. is a thought you don’t say out loud to anyone. Not your partner. Not your mom. Maybe not even here.

What is wrong with my child.

I want to stop you right there, because that thought is doing something specific: it’s turning a behavior into an identity. And once a behavior becomes an identity, you stop looking for what caused it and start looking for what it means about who your kid is. That’s a much scarier place to live, and it’s also the wrong map for what’s actually happening.

Here’s the reframe.

Hitting is not a character trait. It’s a stress response. Specifically, it’s the “fight” branch of the same nervous system reflex we’ve been talking about for two installments now. You’ve read about shutdown — the freeze response, the kid who goes somewhere else internally when it gets to be too much. You’ve read about escape — the flight response, the bolting, the refusal, the “get me out of this.” Fight is the third branch of that same tree. Same root system. Different expression.

When a nervous system hits its ceiling, it doesn’t consult your parenting philosophy first. It picks the fastest available exit, and for some kids, in some moments, the fastest exit is force. Not because they’ve decided to be aggressive. Because their body found the quickest way to make an unbearable thing stop, and a hit is faster than a sentence.

This is the part most content skips, so I’m going to say it plainly: aggression is one of the most function-rich behaviors there is. It can be escape (”get this demand away from me”), it can be sensory (”my body needs impact and this is the fastest way to get it”), it can be attention (”this is the one thing that makes the room stop and look at me”), it can be access to something tangible (”give me back the thing you just took”), and — the one nobody tells you — it can be communication without the words to do it any other way. A three-year-old and a nonspeaking eight-year-old and a verbal eleven-year-old having a very bad day can all be hitting for entirely different reasons that happen to look identical from the outside.

That’s why “just tell him hitting is not okay” doesn’t work. He probably already knows. Knowing isn’t the missing piece. The missing piece is what to do instead, in the exact half-second his body used to reach for a hit — and that half-second is too fast for a lesson. It needs a plan that was already loaded before the moment arrived.

I also want to name something that doesn’t get said enough: you are allowed to be hurt. Neuroaffirming doesn’t mean pain-free. You can hold “my child’s nervous system is doing something involuntary” and “that actually hurt and I’m allowed to feel it” in the same hand. Compassion for your kid does not require erasing your own experience. If anyone has told you that a good parent doesn’t feel anger or flinch or need a minute — they were wrong, and I’d rather you hear that from me than keep carrying it alone.

Here’s what’s true on the other side of this: aggression is one of the most responsive behaviors to intervention, because it has a function you can find. It’s not a mystery. It’s a pattern, and patterns can be worked with.

The call always comes around the same time. Late morning, right after the hard part of the day has already happened.

“Hey, it’s just been a really rough morning. Would you be able to come get him a little early today?”

Nobody says the word suspension. Nobody hands you paperwork. There’s no meeting, no letter, no form with a box checked. You leave work, you feel like you failed somewhere you can’t name, and you drive to a building to collect your kid because today he was too much for it.

I need to tell you what that call actually is.

It’s a removal.

Not an informal favor. Not a flexible, compassionate accommodation between you and the school, though it will always be framed that way, and often the person making the call genuinely believes it is one. Legally, when a child is removed from their educational placement for behavior, that’s a removal. And removals are supposed to be counted.

Here’s the part that will make you angry, so I’ll say it plainly instead of softening it: I’ve made that call. I’ve watched a kid get walked to the office, coat already on, before the office ever logged it as anything.

And the reason it isn’t logged as anything is the entire point.

Under IDEA, once a child with an IEP or a 504 plan has been formally suspended or removed for more than ten cumulative school days in a year, it triggers real, binding protections. A manifestation determination review, where the team has to ask: was this behavior actually caused by the disability? A functional behavior assessment, if there isn’t one already. A hard look at whether the current placement is even appropriate anymore. Ten days is the tripwire. It’s not arbitrary. It exists because after ten days, a pattern isn’t a bad week anymore, it’s a signal that something in the plan is broken.

But that tripwire only counts formal, documented removals.

A shortened day isn’t formal. An early pickup isn’t formal. “Let’s have him do a cool-down period at home this afternoon” isn’t formal. None of it gets coded as a disciplinary removal in the system that’s tracking toward ten days, even though your child experienced the exact same thing a suspended child experiences: removed from instruction, removed from peers, sent home, because of behavior connected to their disability.

A kid can be informally removed thirty, forty, sixty times in a year and the official count can still read zero.

Which means the review that’s supposed to happen automatically, the one that forces the team to admit the plan isn’t working, never gets triggered. Not because your kid’s pattern isn’t real. Because the pattern was never allowed to exist on paper.

And the skill that separates kids who get through the words from kids who can actually use what they read afterward is metacognition.. thinking about their own thinking, in real time, while they read.

So, how do you build a skill that’s this invisible?

What metacognition actually means, and why it doesn’t develop on its own:

Metacognition, in the reading context, means a reader is silently monitoring their own understanding as they go.. and noticing the moment it breaks down.

It’s the internal voice that says “wait, I don’t actually know what just happened” or “who is ‘he’ in this sentence?” and knows what to do next: reread, slow down, ask a question, keep a mental placeholder and keep going.

Here’s the part that surprises most parents: this doesn’t develop automatically just from reading a lot.

A reader can be perfectly fluent, decode every word correctly, and still read straight through confusion without noticing it, because nobody ever taught them what noticing confusion feels like or what to do once they catch it.

This connects directly to executive function.. the same mental skill set involved in self-monitoring, working memory, and catching your own mistakes in any domain, not just reading.

For a lot of neurodivergent learners in particular, self-monitoring is a skill that needs to be made explicit and taught directly, not assumed to develop passively, the same way a lot of “soft skills” get assumed to just show up with age.

Why this determines whether reading turns into writing successfully:

Once reading shifts into an academic tool.. reading a chapter to write a paper, reading a source to take notes for research.. metacognition is the thing that makes that transfer possible.

A student who can catch “I lost the thread two paragraphs ago,” and go back has usable notes.

A student who reads straight through without that internal check ends up with pages read and nothing retained, which shows up as a blank page when it’s time to write.

How metacognition actually gets taught:

The core method is the think-aloud: you read a passage out loud and narrate your own thinking as you go, including your own confusion and how you resolve it.. “wait, who’s ‘he’ in this sentence? let me go back and check.”

This sounds almost too simple, but it’s doing something specific: kids borrow the internal monologue from watching an adult model it, before they’re able to run that monologue independently in their own head.

Skipping this step and just telling a kid to “pay attention while you read” doesn’t work, because self-monitoring isn’t a skill you can instruct directly.. it has to be demonstrated first.

Quick dos for this week of the challenge:

1. Do one think-aloud today, out loud, while reading something together.. narrate a moment of confusion and how you’d fix it, even if you have to manufacture one.

2. Introduce one annotation mark this week.. just one, like a question mark for “this confused me” ..and use it together on a single page.

3. Reinforce the catch, not the correctness. If your child notices they’re confused and says so, that’s the win.. not whether they were right the first time.

And just like that, that’s a wrap! Congratulations for pushing yourself and your child through the last four weeks to beat the dreaded summer slide! Tracking minutes, decoding, fluency, comprehension, and metacognition… Wow!

Most reading struggles trace back to a gap in one of these four layers, and once you know which layer it is, the fix gets a lot more specific than “read more.”

Eyes glaze. Body goes still. You ask a question and get nothing back.. not defiance, not a delayed answer, just silence, like the request went into a void. Maybe they stare at the wall. Maybe they curl smaller into the corner of the couch. Maybe they’re technically still standing there, shoes half on, but they’re not there anymore.

And here’s the part that gets you: because there’s no noise, no crisis, no scene in the grocery store.. nobody treats it like a real behavior. Not the teacher. Not the grandparent who says “well at least she’s not screaming.” Sometimes not even you, because you’ve spent so long braced for the loud version that the quiet version slides right under your radar until it’s been twenty minutes and you realize you’ve been talking to a kid who checked out ten minutes ago.

I want to name something plainly: shutdown is not calm. It is not compliance. It is not your child being “good” for once. It is a nervous system that hit its ceiling and, instead of fighting or fleeing, went dark.

If you’ve read anything here on tantrums versus meltdowns, you already know that a meltdown is what happens when a nervous system exceeds capacity and the fight response takes over.. big, loud, visible, unmistakable. Shutdown is the sibling response. Same overwhelmed nervous system. Same exceeded capacity. Different output. Instead of fight, it’s freeze.. sometimes fawn, where a kid goes eerily agreeable and unreadable at the same time. The body concluded that fighting or fleeing wasn’t going to work, so it powered things down instead.

This is still escape. I need you to sit with that, because it reframes everything. A kid who runs from a hard task is escaping. A kid who screams until the demand is dropped is escaping. And a kid who goes silent and unreachable the second a worksheet lands in front of them is also escaping.. they’ve just found an exit that doesn’t require moving a single muscle. The task stops being processed. The words stop landing. The system removes itself from the situation without removing the body from the room.

This is why shutdown gets so wildly misread. A loud escape behavior gets intervention, IEP goals, a whole behavior plan. A quiet one gets described as “she’s just shy,” “he shuts down when he doesn’t want to do something” …said like it’s a character flaw instead of exactly what it is: a nervous system doing the only thing it has left.

And here’s what it does to you, the parent, watching it happen. The helplessness of a meltdown is loud and awful, but at least you can see what you’re dealing with. Shutdown leaves you standing in a room with a kid who’s physically present and functionally gone, and no idea whether to wait, push, touch, leave, call their name again, or just sit down on the floor next to them and hope. You start second-guessing whether you’re overreacting to nothing, or underreacting to something serious. Both feel possible. Neither feels resolvable in the moment.

That not-knowing is its own kind of exhausting… maybe worse than the loud version, because there’s no adrenaline to carry you through it. Just quiet, and waiting, and a kid who isn’t answering.

Here’s what I want you to know before we go further: shutdown has a shape. It’s readable once you know what you’re looking for, and it’s responsive to the right kind of support… just not the kind that works for a meltdown, and not the kind that works for a tantrum. Pushing through it makes it worse. Ignoring it teaches the wrong lesson. There’s a specific way through.

So, how do you actually check if your child understands what they’re reading, without the pop quiz feeling?

Why comprehension looks completely different depending on where your reader is:

Comprehension isn’t a single skill that either exists or doesn’t.

It’s a ladder, and where your child needs to start depends entirely on their current level.. trying to teach strategy-based comprehension to a reader who isn’t there yet just creates frustration and shuts the whole thing down.

For emerging or nonverbal readers, comprehension starts with pictures, not words, and with recognition, not open-ended recall. Point to the picture that shows what happened. Put picture cards in the order the story happened. “Which one happened first.. this, or this?” This is a real, legitimate form of comprehension.. it demonstrates understanding of sequence and content without requiring verbal expression, which matters enormously for readers who are nonverbal or minimally verbal. Comprehension and verbal expression are two different skills, and conflating them means a lot of kids who genuinely understand what they read get mislabeled as not comprehending, simply because they can’t say it out loud on command.

For readers around 4th and 5th grade, comprehension becomes strategy-based. This is the age where texts stop being simple narratives and start requiring active work from the reader: predicting what happens next and why, questioning while reading (”wait, why did the character do that?”), summarizing paragraph by paragraph in their own words, and making connections between the text and their own life or other things they’ve read. These aren’t skills kids pick up automatically just by reading more.. they’re strategies that need to be explicitly named, modeled, and practiced until a reader starts doing them on their own, silently, without being prompted.

Why “what happened in the book?” backfires:

Open-ended recall questions right after reading are actually one of the harder comprehension tasks there is.. they require a reader to hold the entire text in memory and reconstruct it on demand, with no supports.

For a lot of kids, especially ones already on shaky footing with reading, this feels like a test they’re set up to fail, every single time they finish a book.

That association builds fast: reading ends in being tested.

A reader who feels tested every time they finish a book will, understandably, start avoiding finishing books.

Quick dos for this week of the challenge:

1. If your reader is early or nonverbal: after your read today, use two pictures from the story and ask “which one happened first?” No verbal answer required.. pointing counts.

2. If your reader is older: pick one comprehension strategy.. predicting is the easiest starting point.. and use it once today. Before turning the page: “what do you think happens next?”

3. Skip the recall quiz this week entirely. Just notice what your child naturally says or points to, unprompted, after reading. That’s more honest data than anything you could ask for.

By 4:17 they’re under the table. Or the pencil is “broken.” Or they suddenly, urgently, need to pee, get a snack, find their other shoe, tell you something very important about a video game.. anything, anything, that is not sitting down and starting.

You’ve tried patience. You’ve tried a timer. You’ve tried “just do five minutes and then you can stop.” You’ve tried raising your voice, which you hate, which makes you feel like a failure, and which also.. let’s be honest.. sometimes works, which makes you hate it more.

And on the nights you’re too tired to fight it? You say “fine, we’ll do it tomorrow.” And the second those words leave your mouth, you watch your kid’s whole body relax.

That relief you just saw.. that’s not you being a pushover. That’s data.

Here’s what I want you to sit with this week: the meltdown isn’t about the worksheet. It’s about the demand. Your kid isn’t refusing homework because they’re lazy or defiant or trying to manipulate you. They’re refusing because at some point, this exact sequence.. protest, escalate, get out of the task.. worked. And behavior that works gets repeated. Faster and bigger, every time.

This is what’s called an escape function. The behavior exists to get away from something: a task that’s too hard, too long, too boring, or attached to a history of failure. And every time the task disappears after the meltdown.. even once.. you’ve just taught your kid’s nervous system a rule: this is how I get out.

I need you to hear this without spiraling into guilt, because I’m not telling you this to blame you. I’m telling you this because it’s the only thing that actually explains why “just be firmer” and “just be more patient” both keep failing. You’re treating a communication problem like a compliance problem. And you can’t out-discipline a kid’s need to escape something genuinely aversive to them.

The fix isn’t “hold the line harder.” The fix is making the task survivable and making sure escape stops being the fastest way out.

That’s what we’re building below.. the actual mechanics of how you change this, not just why it’s happening.

So, here’s your protocol. This works for homework, but it works identically for chores, getting dressed, teeth-brushing.. any task your kid is escaping.

Below is the weekly minute reading report. Use it to help your child stay accountable with their weekly reading goal.

As written in Part I, use reinforcing strategies to keep your child motivated throughout the week. If you need a refresher, re-read Part I here.

This week’s challenge is all about fluency.

Because without it, your child will have a more difficult time learning how to actually understand (comprehend) what they are reading.

What fluency actually is and why it’s not about speed:

A lot of parents hear “fluency” and think it means fast reading.

It doesn’t.

Fluency is three things happening together: accuracy (reading the words correctly), rate (reading at a pace that isn’t laboriously slow), and prosody (reading with expression.. pausing at commas, raising your voice for a question mark, sounding like talking instead of a robot sounding out each word).

Here’s why this matters so much more than it seems like it should: there’s a concept in reading research called automaticity theory.

The idea is simple but has huge implications.. working memory has a limited capacity, and if a big chunk of that capacity is being spent on decoding (sounding out each individual word, one at a time, effortfully), there’s very little left over for comprehension (actually understanding and holding onto what the sentence means).

A kid who’s still effortfully decoding every third word isn’t being lazy or careless when they finish a page and can’t tell you what happened.

Their whole cognitive budget went to getting the words out.

There was nothing left to spend on meaning.

This is why fluency is called the bridge to comprehension.

It’s not a separate skill sitting between decoding and comprehension.. it’s what happens when decoding becomes automatic enough that comprehension finally has room to happen.

Skip building fluency, and you get kids who can technically read every word on the page and still walk away with nothing, because all their effort went into word-calling instead of meaning-making.

How fluency actually gets built:

The research-backed method here is repeated reading: the same short, appropriately-leveled passage, read multiple times across several days.

Not for pressure, and not as a punishment for reading slowly the first time.. for automaticity.

Each rereading, the words that took effort the first time start requiring less effort, until eventually they don’t require conscious effort at all.

That’s the whole mechanism: repetition is what moves decoding from the effortful, working-memory-draining zone into the instant, automatic zone.

Echo reading is the other core tool.. you read a line aloud with real expression, your child immediately repeats it back, matching your phrasing and tone.

This directly teaches prosody instead of hoping it develops on its own through passive exposure, which for a lot of kids, it simply doesn’t.

Quick dos for this week of the challenge:

1. Pick one short passage (a few sentences to a paragraph, depending on your reader’s level) and have them read it out loud once today. Don’t correct anything yet.. just listen for where they get stuck or slow down.

2. Reread that same passage tomorrow. And the next day. Notice if it gets smoother.. that’s the data point that matters, not a single read.

3. Try one round of echo reading tonight: you read a sentence with expression, they immediately repeat it back the same way.

That’s it. That’s the whole thing that happened. No more cookies before dinner. No, we’re not stopping at the toy aisle. No, the iPad doesn’t come back on right now.

And then the floor drops out.

Not “disappointed for a second and moves on.” Full collapse. Screaming, or hitting, or dropping to the ground in the middle of Target, or a door slamming so hard the frame shakes. You’re standing there thinking: it was one word. How is one word doing this much damage?

If you’re bracing yourself before you even open your mouth to say no.. rehearsing it, softening it, sometimes just not saying it because you don’t have the bandwidth for what’s coming.. you are not alone, and you are not doing this wrong.

Here’s what’s actually happening.

A “no” isn’t just information to your kid’s brain. It’s a loss. The thing they wanted.. the cookie, the toy, the extra ten minutes.. was, a half-second ago, available. In their mind, they had it. And then it was taken away. Developmentally, young kids and many neurodivergent kids of any age don’t yet have a fully built-out brake system for that kind of sudden loss. The part of the brain that says “this is annoying but survivable” is still under construction. So the reaction isn’t an overreaction to nothing.. it’s a full-strength reaction to what feels, in that moment, like something being taken from them.

For a lot of autistic kids specifically, this gets amplified. Transitions are already harder. Uncertainty is already harder. A “no” is both a loss and an unplanned transition and a break in the expected sequence of events, all at once. That’s three hard things stacked into one word.

And here’s the part that quietly makes it worse over time, in almost every house: the behavior that shows up after “no” is often working.

Not because you’re a pushover. Because it’s human. Your kid screams, you hold the line for four minutes, you’re exhausted, you’re in public, you’re late.. and you cave. “Fine. One cookie.” You just taught a lesson, and it wasn’t the one you meant to teach. You taught that “no” is negotiable if the reaction is big enough. And the cruelest part of that dynamic is that caving sometimes.. not every time, just sometimes.. is actually the thing most likely to make the behavior stick around. A brain that gets rewarded unpredictably will keep trying longer and harder than a brain that gets rewarded every time. That’s not a parenting failure. That’s how learning works, and almost nobody tells you that.

So if you feel stuck in a loop where “no” reliably turns into a battle, and you’re not sure if you’re supposed to hold firm no matter what or read the room and pick your moments.. that loop is exactly what we’re going to break down.

Saying no is not deprivation. It’s one of the most important regulation reps your kid gets. Every “no” you help them move through is a rehearsal for handling disappointment when you’re not there to manage it for them. That’s the actual goal here.. not a kid who never hears no, and not a kid who silently complies. A kid who can feel annoyed and still be okay.

But, just like the title… Pushing your child just to read for 20 minutes isn’t going to make them a better reader.

Or beat the dreaded summer slide.

So, use this minute tracker below to help your child stay accountable for each day of the week.

But, this tracker isn’t enough to keep your child motivated to read.

If it is, consider yourself blessed.

If it isn’t, I got your back.

Here’s the easiest way to keep your child motivated to read: work for something reinforcing.

First read for 20 minutes, then _____.

Give them at least two choices to pick something fun to do after they successfully accomplish their 20 minutes.

Every day.

They earn something, just like you earn a paycheck for going to work every day.

Nobody.. kid or adult.. sustains an effortful behavior for free, indefinitely, just because it’s “good for them.”

That’s not a character flaw.

That’s how motivation works for every human nervous system on earth.

But here’s the question that actually matters: if your child is “reading” for 20 minutes a day…

Do they actually know how to read what’s in front of them?

What’s really happening when a kid “reads” without decoding skills:

A lot of kids get through books without ever really decoding the words.

They memorize the shape of familiar words.

They guess from the picture.

They use the first letter and the general sentence topic to fill in the rest.

It works.. for a while.

It works right up until the books stop having pictures on every page, the vocabulary gets specific instead of predictable, and there’s no context clue big enough to guess “photosynthesis” or “reluctantly.”

That’s the wall a lot of kids hit around 3rd and 4th grade, and it’s not because they suddenly got worse at reading.

It’s because the guessing strategy ran out of runway, and true decoding was never actually built underneath it.

Reading researchers describe this with something called the Simple View of Reading: reading comprehension is the product of decoding skill and language comprehension.. not the sum, the product.

That means if decoding is close to zero, it doesn’t matter how strong a kid’s vocabulary or listening comprehension is.

Multiply anything by close to zero, and the result stays close to zero.

Decoding isn’t one input among many.

It’s the gate everything else has to pass through.

So the real question behind “how many minutes did they read today” is actually: how automatically can they decode what’s on the page?

And that comes down to a specific, teachable list of skills.. not vague exposure to books:

• Letter names and letter sounds

• Digraphs (two letters, one sound.. like sh, ch, th)

• Blends (two or three sounds blended together.. like st, bl, spl)

• Long vowel teams (ai, ea, oa)

• R-controlled vowels (ar, er, ir, or, ur)

• Affixes (prefixes and suffixes that change a word’s meaning or tense)

• Silent letters and less-common spelling patterns

Here’s how to know where your child actually stands:

How decoding actually gets built.. not guessed at:

Explicit, systematic phonics instruction.. teaching sound-symbol relationships directly, in a planned sequence, instead of hoping kids absorb them from exposure to books.. is what closes this gap.

This is the “science of reading” piece: decades of research on how the brain actually learns to map sounds to print, called orthographic mapping.

Every time a child sounds out a word correctly and connects it to its spelling, that word gets a little more automatic.

Do that enough times, with enough words, and decoding stops being effortful.. it becomes instant recognition.

That’s the whole goal: get decoding out of working memory so there’s room left over to actually understand what’s being read.

Quick dos for this week of the challenge:

1. Pick 3 skills from the list above and do a 2-minute check with your child today.. can they tell you the sound, not just recite the alphabet song?

2. Make simple flashcards pairing a picture with each sound you’re targeting. Apple for short a. Ship for the digraph sh. Visuals give early readers something concrete to anchor an abstract sound to.

   

3. During your 20 minutes today, notice.. does your child sound out unfamiliar words, or guess and move on? Don’t correct yet. Just notice. That’s your starting data point for the week.

You ask him to turn it right-side up. He does, opens to page one, reads maybe four words, and then: “I need water.” You get him water. He drinks it standing at the counter for way longer than water requires. Back at the couch, he reads another sentence, then his leg starts bouncing, then “this book is stupid,” then “can I just tell you what happens instead of reading it,” then the book is closed, then it’s on the floor, then it’s a fight about the book being on the floor.

You know what’s coming. You’ve watched this exact sequence a hundred times, just with different props.. different book, same stalling, same four words, same collapse.

You get down next to him. You say the thing you always say. “Just try a few more pages.” And eventually he does, or eventually you give up and read it to him instead, and you’re both a little wrung out, and there’s a book face-down on the rug, and some part of you thinks: we do this every single day.

Here’s what I want you to sit with: your child isn’t avoiding reading because he’s lazy, or oppositional, or “just doesn’t like books.” He’s avoiding it because right now, reading costs him more than it gives him back.. and every kid, every single time, will avoid a bad trade.

Not because he doesn’t know he’s supposed to read. He knows. But knowing you’re supposed to do something and having a reason that actually outweighs the effort are two completely different things. Most of our kids have the first one. Almost none of them were given the second.

This is the part of reading support that gets skipped constantly, because it’s not dramatic. Nobody posts about the quiet fifteen minutes where nothing went wrong. But that’s the whole game. Reading avoidance.. the stalling, the “this is boring,” the book on the floor.. almost always has an effort-versus-reward gap sitting underneath it. The avoidance isn’t the problem to solve. It’s the solution your child already found, because right now it’s the fastest way out of something that feels like work with no payoff. Our job isn’t to punish the avoidance. It’s to change the trade, and to change it before he’s already mid-stall.

That’s what a real reading routine does.. not more reading, not stricter reading, a different trade. Not as a nice add-on. As the actual intervention. The strategies that work don’t reduce avoidance by managing the meltdown over the book better. They reduce avoidance by making reading worth the effort in the first place.

But here’s the part almost everyone gets wrong: you cannot build motivation in the middle of the resistance. A kid who’s already stalling is not a kid who’s about to discover he loves reading because you asked one more time. If the first time reading ever feels good is the day you’re standing over him saying “just get through it”.. it will not work, and it’s not because he’s stubborn. It’s because the trade was never actually rebuilt yet.

So here’s exactly how to rebuild it.. when, where, in what order, and what to do the first fifteen times it doesn’t go the way you pictured.

PART II: The routine that rebuilds the trade [in order, don’t skip a step!]

1. Pick one book that’s genuinely too easy, not “just right.” Not the book at his grade level. Not the one the teacher sent home. One he can decode with almost no effort.. because right now, the goal isn’t skill-building, it’s proving that reading can end in something other than a fight. Effort-free decoding is what makes room for the reward to actually land. You can move up in difficulty later, once the trade is rebuilt.

2. Set the block small, predictable, and separate from anything that feels like a test. Five minutes. Same time, same spot, every day.. right after dinner, in the same chair. No questions afterward. No “what happened in the story.” This block exists to prove reading is survivable, not to check comprehension. Comprehension work comes later, once avoidance isn’t the default response.

3. Reinforce the act of starting and finishing, not the performance. The first several weeks, something good happens immediately after the five minutes are done.. not contingent on how well he read, not “if you did a good job.” The trade being taught is: reading happened, then something I wanted happened. Not: reading happened well, then I got approval. “You did your five minutes, even the part where it was tricky” lands completely differently than “good reading.”

4. Fade your presence, not your involvement, gradually. First few reps: you sit right next to him, maybe reading your own book alongside his. Next: you’re in the room, not right next to him. Next: he does it while you’re nearby doing something else. Last: fully independent. Move down that ladder over days or weeks.. and if he stalls at a level, go back up one rather than pushing through.

5. Build in real choice inside a small container, every single day. Not “do you want to read” .. that invites no. “Comic or chapter book tonight?” “This chair or the floor?” Both options are reading. The choice is real, the outcome isn’t. Autonomy is the piece that turns “something being done to him” into “something he’s doing.”

Scripts to use while you’re rebuilding this:

While setting up the block: “Five minutes, this book, this chair. Then we’re done.. no questions.”

While he’s stalling (bathroom, water, “I need my sock adjusted”): “I’ll be right here when you’re ready to start your five minutes,” said flat, not annoyed, no negotiating the five minutes down.

The moment the five minutes ends, even if it was rocky: “You did it, even the part that felt hard,” said like it’s genuinely good news, because it is.

When he asks to skip: “Five minutes still happens today. You get to pick which book.” Hold the boundary, hand back the choice.

Troubleshooting:

“He only wants to read the same book over and over.” Not a malfunction. Repetition builds fluency and, more importantly, it’s proof the trade is working.. he’s choosing to come back to something that felt good. Let it run its course. Variety can come back in once the pattern is solid.

“The book is genuinely too easy.. isn’t that a waste of five minutes?” Not right now. You are not currently teaching decoding. You’re teaching that reading doesn’t have to end in a fight. Skill-building only sticks once avoidance isn’t the automatic response.. trying to layer difficulty in before that happens usually collapses the whole routine.

“It worked for a few days and then stopped.” Almost always a consistency break.. one day the five minutes turned into ten, or a comprehension question snuck in, or the reward got held back. That’s enough to teach the old trade.. avoidance.. is still the safer bet. Rebuild it exactly the way you built it the first time. This is common, not a sign you did it wrong.

“She’ll do it with me but won’t pick up a book on her own.” That’s an expected middle step, not a stall-out. Independent initiation is the last rung on the ladder in step 4, not the first. Keep fading your presence slowly rather than pulling back all at once.

“The decoding is genuinely fine.. he can read, he just refuses.” If the skill is solid and the resistance is still there, this is likely less about the book and more about autonomy.. refusal as the one place he gets to say no. That’s a real pattern, and it’s workable, but it’s a slightly different plan than the one above.

But, you can’t read-log your way out of this. You need something that rebuilds the skill and the will.. at the same time, on purpose.

The service is there.. speech, two times a week, thirty minutes, right there in black and white. You remember the meeting. You remember the case manager saying it, nodding at you, writing something down. You remember feeling like it landed. Like it was handled.

But the progress report says two sessions this quarter. Not two a week. Two total.

You open your email to find the thread where you flagged this. There isn’t one. You call the case manager, who is kind, and a little vague, and says she’ll “look into it.” You hang up and realize you have no way to prove what was said in that room six months ago. Not because you’re careless. Because nobody told you that the meeting isn’t where this gets decided.

The paper trail is.

The room is not where you win.

I need you to sit with something uncomfortable: the IEP meeting itself has almost no enforcement power. What gets said out loud, what gets nodded at, what gets promised in that room with twelve people and a box of tissues on the table.. none of it is binding unless it exists somewhere in writing, with a date on it, that you can point back to.

This isn’t a flaw in you for not knowing that. It’s a flaw in a system that lets a verbal agreement feel like a resolution when it’s actually nothing. Schools aren’t lying to you in that room, usually. They’re operating in a system with turnover, caseloads, and a hundred other kids’ paperwork stacked on top of yours. Good intentions evaporate under that kind of load. What doesn’t evaporate is an email with a timestamp.

So the actual skill of IEP advocacy isn’t what you say in the meeting. It’s whether you built a record before you needed one.

Before the meeting: you’re not attending, you’re submitting evidence.

Five to seven days before any IEP meeting, send your concerns in writing. Not because it’s polite.. because it puts your priorities on record before the team walks in with their draft already written. Email the case manager. Keep it short. Name what you’re seeing at home, what you want addressed, what data you’d like discussed.

This does two things. It forces the team to respond to your concerns instead of you reacting to theirs. And it means that if a goal quietly disappears from the draft, you have a dated record that you asked for it.

In the meeting: everything verbal gets converted to written, in real time.

You don’t need to be adversarial in that room. You need one habit: nothing gets to stay verbal.

If someone tells you a service will happen, say: “I want to make sure that’s documented in the meeting notes.. can someone confirm it’s been written down before we move on?”

If a recommendation is made and you don’t understand the reasoning, ask for the data behind it. Recommendations without data are opinions with better lighting.

If you’re handed something to sign at the table, you are allowed to say: “I need to take this home and review it before I sign.” You are not required to sign in that room. Say that sentence twice in your own head before you ever walk in, because in the moment, with twelve people looking at you, it’s easy to forget you have it.

After the meeting: this is the sentence that actually protects your kid.

Within 24 hours, send a summary email. Not a novel. One paragraph:

“Per our meeting today, the team agreed to [service, frequency, duration]. Please let me know if I’ve misunderstood anything.”

That single email is the difference between “I remember them saying that” and “I have a dated record the district never corrected.” Silence on their end isn’t nothing.. it’s tacit confirmation. If they don’t dispute it within a reasonable window, that email becomes your evidence.

This is the part nobody tells you at the meeting, because it happens after everyone’s already left the room. But it’s the single most useful thing in this entire piece. If you take nothing else.. take this.

When it doesn’t work: the record is what makes escalation possible at all.

Say the service still doesn’t happen. The progress report shows two sessions instead of eight, exactly like it did in March. Here’s the sentence that signals you know this is a legal document, not a wish list:

“The IEP states this service at this frequency. I want to understand why it hasn’t been delivered, and I’d like a corrective action plan in writing.”

That sentence only has teeth because you can point to the record. Without the paper trail, this is your word against theirs, and you will lose that argument almost every time.. not because you’re wrong, but because you have nothing to hold up.

With the paper trail, you have options that scale: request a new meeting at any time, not just the annual review. Put your disagreement in writing even while signing the parts you do agree with. Request an Independent Educational Evaluation if you dispute the school’s data. File a state complaint if IDEA is being violated.. investigation is required within 60 days. Mediation, and only as a last resort, due process.

Most disputes never reach that far. But every option on that ladder depends on the same thing sitting underneath it: a written record that shows what was promised, when, and by whom.

I know this reads like homework on top of everything else you’re already carrying. It is. I’m not going to pretend otherwise.

But here’s the reframe I want you to leave with: you are not a guest at that table hoping to be heard. Under IDEA, you are a required member of the team, and your signature is a legal act, not a formality. The paper trail isn’t you being difficult. It’s you using the authority you already legally have.. the same authority every other person at that table is using without a second thought, because they were trained to.

You weren’t trained to. Now you are.

One thing to do this week: pull up your child’s most recent IEP meeting. If there’s no summary email in your sent folder from within 24 hours of that meeting.. write one now, even late. Reference what you remember being agreed to and ask the case manager to confirm or correct it. That single email starts the record today, instead of six months from now when you’re the one sitting at the kitchen table trying to remember what was said.

“Because with every rule in the English language, there’s an exception.” Insert annoying Jim Carrey meme.

He was in fourth grade.

He had no IEP. He was not, by any label I was allowed to write down, a kid with a “disability.” He was just a kid who had been taught to guess at words using the pictures and the first letter and the shape of the sentence, because that is what we were told worked, because that is what a curriculum told his teachers to tell him to do, year after year, and nobody along the way stopped to ask whether it was actually teaching him to read or just teaching him to perform reading in a room full of adults who wanted to believe it was working.

So, this is the part I need you to sit with.

This is the part where I’m supposed to give you the statistic, and then the explanation, and then the hope.

I’m going to give you the statistic first because I think you deserve to feel the weight of it before I try to make it feel manageable.

Fewer than a third of American students are reading at a proficient level in fourth through eighth grade.

Nearly 40 percent of fourth graders are reading below even the “basic” level.. the largest share since 2002.

And it isn’t just the youngest kids losing ground.

Reading scores have fallen further among the students who were already struggling the most, while stronger readers have mostly held steady.. the gap between kids who can read and kids who can’t is not closing.

It’s widening, every two years, like clockwork.

By twelfth grade, American students are reading at the lowest levels recorded in three decades. Nearly a third of graduating seniors don’t have basic reading skills.. the ability to determine what a piece of writing is actually trying to say. Not analyze it. Not write an essay about it. Just understand it.

And these are not statistics of kiddos with disabilities. These are all of our kids.

Here’s what I can’t stop thinking about: this happened during the decades when we knew better.

The United States has spent hundreds of millions of dollars and years of research studying exactly how children learn to read. Few things in education are as well understood.

We are not short on knowledge.

Somewhere between the research and the classroom.. between what the science says and what got handed to teachers in a curriculum binder.. something broke.

Or maybe nothing broke.

Maybe it was never built to carry the science in the first place. Maybe the binder was built to be sellable, teachable-in-a-weekend, defensible in a school board meeting. Not to be correct.

I trained as a grades 1-6 general education teacher and a PreK-13th grade special education teacher. I sat in professional development sessions where we were taught to teach children to guess.

I did it.

I stood in front of kids and taught them to look at a picture of a dog and a word that started with a “b” and guess “bark,” and I called it reading instruction, because that’s what I was handed and told to deliver, and I believed.. the way you believe things when everyone around you is nodding.. that this was what good teaching looked like.

At least forty states have now passed laws requiring evidence-based reading instruction. The reckoning is happening. It is happening late, and it is happening for a generation of kids who already sat in those rooms guessing at words, some of whom are adults now, some of whom are your kids, some of whom might be you.

I don’t say this to make you feel like it’s too late. I say it because I think a lot of us are quietly carrying a version of Marcus’s face.. a kid we taught, or raised, or were, who was handed a strategy instead of a skill, and told that was reading.

The truth is that decoding.. the actual, unglamorous mechanics of turning a string of letters into a sound into a word into a meaning.. is not a neurotypical skill.

It is a human skill.

It does not care about your child’s reading disability or lack of one.

It cares whether someone taught it to them directly, explicitly, and correctly, or whether someone handed them a workaround and called it a strategy.

A third of the lowest-performing readers in this country have a disability. A quarter are English language learners.

But most of them don’t.

Most of the kids reading below grade level right now are kids like Marcus.. no label, no meeting, no advocate in the room, just a kid who was quietly failed by a system that told his parents he was doing fine because he could sound confident while guessing.

That’s the epidemic.

Not that some kids struggle to read. Kids have always struggled to read, for a hundred different reasons, and they always will.

The epidemic is that we built an entire instructional apparatus on a theory that didn’t hold up, taught it to a generation of teachers who had no way of knowing better, handed it to millions of kids who had no way of advocating for themselves, and called the resulting collapse a “post-pandemic learning loss,” instead of what a lot of it actually was: a curriculum failure that started years before any of us had heard of a pandemic.

I don’t have a tidy ending for this one, systematically of course.

He’s stuck on the third math problem. You can see it happen in real time.. his pencil stops, his shoulders climb toward his ears, his leg starts bouncing under the table. You know what’s coming. You’ve watched this exact sequence a hundred times.

Ten seconds later, the worksheet is on the floor. Then it’s his arm sweeping the pencil cup off the table. Then it’s the sound.. the one that makes your own chest go tight, because some part of you has learned to brace for it before your brain even catches up.

You get down next to him. You say the thing you always say. “I know this is hard. Let’s take a break.” And it works, eventually. It always eventually works. But you’re both wrung out, and there’s a chipped pencil cup on the floor, and some part of you thinks: we do this every single day.

Here’s what I want you to sit with: your child didn’t have a way to tell you “I’m stuck and I need help” before the pencil hit the floor.

Not because he doesn’t know he’s stuck. He knew it before you did. But knowing you need help and having a fast, reliable, low-effort way to say so in the middle of a hard moment are two completely different skills. Most of our kids have the first one. Almost none of them were explicitly taught the second one.

This is the part of behavior support that gets skipped constantly, because it’s not dramatic. Nobody posts a video of a calm Tuesday where nothing happened. But that’s the whole game. Escape-motivated behavior.. the meltdowns, the paper-sweeping, the shutting down.. almost always has a communication gap sitting underneath it. The behavior isn’t the problem to solve. It’s the solution your child already found, because it was the fastest tool available. Our job isn’t to punish the tool. It’s to hand them a better one, and to hand it to them before they need it.. not in the middle of the fire.

That’s what an “I need help” card or AAC button does. Not as a nice add-on. As the actual intervention. Proactive strategies don’t reduce behavior by managing the meltdown better. They reduce behavior by making the meltdown unnecessary in the first place.

But here’s the part almost everyone gets wrong: you cannot teach a brand-new communication skill in the moment your child is already dysregulated. The nervous system that’s flooded is not a nervous system that’s learning. If the first time your child ever sees that card is the day you’re desperately holding it up mid-meltdown saying “use your words, use your card” ..it will not work, and it’s not because the tool failed. It’s because the teaching never actually happened yet.

So here’s exactly how to teach it.. when, where, in what order, and what to do the first fifteen times it doesn’t go the way you pictured.

There’s a folder in every school with your kid’s name on it that you’ve never seen.

Not the cumulative file. Not the one you signed a release for. A working folder.. a running list of the small things. The worksheet where the letters float off in every direction. The recess where he stood at the fence instead of the field. The redirection that took four tries instead of one. None of it dramatic enough to call you about. All of it going somewhere.

I know, because I’ve kept those folders.

And here’s the part that will make you angry, so I want to say it plainly instead of softening it: I usually suspect something by October.

That gap.. between what I suspect in October and what I’m allowed to say based on a hunch in October.. is the whole story of why “we’re recommending an evaluation,” can take years to leave an educator’s mouth. It’s not because we’re withholding it. It’s because the public school education system built the sentence to be almost impossible to say without months of proof if you don’t call for an evaluation first.

Here’s what’s actually happening in that gap.

Schools don’t refer on instinct. They refer on documentation. Most districts run on a tiered intervention model. You might have heard it called RTI or MTSS. Before a formal evaluation can even be requested through the school, there’s an expectation that your child moves through tiers of “general education interventions” first: extra small-group time, a modified worksheet, a check-in system. Each tier typically has to run for a defined stretch.. often eight to twelve weeks.. before anyone can say it “didn’t work” on paper. If it partially works, the clock resets. A new intervention. Another six to twelve weeks. That’s not one delay. That’s a delay that can legally repeat itself for years, and every single reset looks, on paper, like progress being made.. because in the tiniest, most incremental sense, it usually is. Just not enough.

The sentence has to survive a room before it reaches you. By the time a teacher says “I think we should evaluate,” it’s rarely just their sentence anymore. It’s gone through a grade-level team, sometimes a school psychologist’s informal read, sometimes an administrator weighing what a new evaluation means for staffing and caseload. Not because anyone is trying to keep your child from help.. but because the sentence carries weight the moment it’s said out loud, and everyone in that room knows it. So it gets held. Refined. Delayed one more data cycle “to be sure.”

Nobody is required to tell you the clock exists. This is the part that should make you the angriest, and it’s the truest one. Schools have a legal responsibility called Child Find.. An obligation to identify kids who may need special education services. But Child Find is a floor, not a practice that runs on your timeline. It doesn’t come with a notification to you that says “we’re two intervention cycles into a process that may end in a referral.” You’re not looped in structurally. You find out when someone decides it’s time to loop you in.

Which means the actual power in this entire process.. the thing that can compress three years into three months.. was never something a teacher who follows district protocols was going to hand you on their own.

It’s a sentence you as the parent can say first.

So let me tell you what I actually am, because it explains this better than any name could.

I’ve spent years inside public school classrooms.. not observing them, living inside them. I’ve sat across the table in IEP meetings. I’ve taught reading intervention to kids quietly falling through the cracks while everyone assumed they were “just behind.” I’ve supported children with disabilities every day, and watched their parents piece together, mostly alone, what was actually happening to their kid inside a building they weren’t allowed to walk into.

What I am is a translator.. I take what happens inside schools and hand it to you in a way you can actually use before your next IEP meeting, your next meltdown, your next 6 pm collapse at the kitchen table.

That’s the parent side.

Here’s the part I haven’t said out loud until now.

This mindset isn’t just for parents. It was never supposed to stop there.

Every idea I’ve built this on.. behavior as communication, connection before correction, nervous systems before consequences, kids as whole people instead of behaviors to manage.. belongs just as much in a classroom as it does in a living room.

I’ve watched well-meaning educators run rooms on compliance because it’s what they were trained on, because nobody handed them another way. I was one of them, some days. I know exactly how that happens, and I know exactly what it costs the kids in the room when it does.

So this isn’t just a business getting bigger.

This is a mindset that was always meant to be shared further than I was letting it go.

Because my soul’s mission in this world is to reach as many parents as I can.

But, educators need it just as much.. maybe more, because they’re standing in front of thirty kids a day with almost none of the support they actually need to do this well.

That doesn’t fit under an “ABA” name. It never really did.

So Playfully ABA is becoming Lightly Learning.

Learning doesn’t have to feel heavy.. for the kid, the parent, or the teacher standing at the front of the room.

It can feel approachable.

It can feel hopeful.

It can feel lighter than it’s felt so far, for everyone holding a piece of that child’s world.

Or.. worse, in a way.. you made the one meal you know they’ll eat. The one you’ve made forty-seven times. And you stood at the stove feeling two things at once: relief that it’s going to work, and grief that this is what dinner is now.

You’ve watched your kid gag on something that looks completely fine to you. Cry at a food that isn’t even touching their food. You’ve tried hiding the vegetables in the sauce. You’ve tried the reward chart. You’ve tried “just one bite” and watched it detonate the entire table in under ten seconds.

Part II: It’s not picky eating. Here’s the actual difference.

A BT walked over and stopped him. Redirected him into a “functional activity.” He didn’t ask for a functional activity. He got told. Actually, physically hand-over-hand redirected.

I’m teaching ESY right now, so I’m in rooms like this one more than usual this summer. But this isn’t an ESY problem. I’ve watched this exact moment happen in a dozen rooms, run by a dozen well-meaning people, for eight years.

So, I want to name something plainly, because the field has gotten very good at making this hard to say out loud: blocking a stim during free play has no clinical justification unless it’s dangerous. Not “unless it’s atypical.” Not “unless it looks strange to the adults in the room.” Dangerous. That’s the bar. If it doesn’t clear that bar, what we’re doing when we interrupt it isn’t therapy.

It’s discomfort management.. ours, not the kid’s.

And forcing a “functional activity” onto a kid who isn’t showing you a single sign of wanting to be there.. no approach, no positive affect, no lean-in.. isn’t programming.

It’s compliance training wearing a clipboard.

I know how that lands in this field. I know someone reading this is already reaching for “but generalization” or “but we need functional replacement behaviors” or “but recess is a natural environment teaching opportunity.” I’m not arguing against skill-building.

I’m arguing against doing it during the fifteen minutes a day that were supposed to be theirs.

A kid’s nervous system doesn’t know the difference between “this is for your own good” and “this is being done to me.” It only knows whether it’s safe to be in its own body right now. Every time we override that answer, we’re not teaching regulation. We’re teaching masking. We’re teaching that even the free time isn’t free.

So here’s where I’ve landed, and it’s not a soft landing.. it’s a line.

Assent-based ABA isn’t the gentle version of ABA. It’s the correct, and dare I say, the ONLY version.

Compliance-based practice isn’t old-school rigor we’ve evolved past.. it was always a misapplication of the science, and we’re only now willing to say so out loud. The data was never the problem. The interpretation of what the data was for was the problem.

This is the thing I want to build. Not a softer corner of ABA for parents who feel bad about the harder stuff. A different center of gravity for the whole field:

Where a child’s assent is the baseline you build from, not the thing you negotiate down to when someone complains.

And guess what?

That child found his way back to that door about ten minutes later, once the BT moved on to another kid. Nobody wrote that down as data. But I did.

That’s the piece I keep coming back to.. not the redirection, the return.

He found his way back to himself the second nobody was managing him.

That’s not a behavior to extinguish.

That’s the whole point.

You’ve read the advice. Probably more than once.

Ignore the tantrum. Don’t give attention to the behavior. Stay calm and wait it out.

So you try it. You turn away. You breathe through it. You do the thing.

And it gets worse.

Or.. maybe it gets better. For a day. And then it comes back harder and you’re standing in the same kitchen, same meltdown, thinking: am I making this worse by ignoring it? Should I be doing something? Is stepping in the right call or am I just reinforcing this?

The uncertainty is its own kind of exhaustion.

Because the advice you’ve been given.. ignore it, don’t react, wait it out.. isn’t wrong exactly. But it’s also not the whole picture. And when you’re missing part of the picture, you can do everything “right” and still feel like you’re failing.

Here’s what nobody tells you: whether to ignore or support isn’t a personality choice. It’s not about being firm enough or soft enough. It’s a clinical decision.. and it depends entirely on what’s driving the behavior in the first place.

A BCBA doesn’t walk into a hard moment and think should I step in or step back? They think: what function is this behavior serving? What does this child need to get or avoid right now? And that answer tells them exactly what to do.

That’s what this plan is going to give you.

Not a rule. A framework.
