For example, hot weather and spicy food increase heat, therefore increase Pitta even more. This isn’t only about food and environment, it can even be about what information we take in around us, such as watching a violent film which has pitta-aggravating qualities; or even tickling enhances vata! The practical guideline is to reduce a dosha, use qualities opposite to it (vishesha); and to increase or maintain a quality, use similar ones (samanya). It’s Ayurveda’s way of saying “you are what you eat/expose yourself to” and this perspective guides diet, lifestyle and seasonal routines to seek balance. If we think about it, we take in every sensation through at least one of our senses, and each sensation affects the physical, energetic, mental and emotional parts of ourselves.

Although we can’t be completely conscious of every sensation we receive, we can slowly start to recognise the qualities of our feelings and be curious about what we are receiving through our senses, what elements of our internal and external environments are bringing us in and out of balance. Once we start to reflect in this way, we can start becoming even more familiar with qualities of Vata, Pitta and Kapha as lenses to help us negotiate what we need to introduce to create more balance, whether that be physically, energetically or mentally and emotionally.

Ayurveda: Mind & Emotion

This week, I wanted us to contemplate Ayurveda’s perspective on emotional health.

An Ayurvedic approach considers everything in order for us to get the most amount of nourishment and goodness from our meals: to bring balance, to heal or maintain radiance, from the inside out!

A practice that I recommended a couple of weeks ago was tongue scraping. If you look at your tongue, especially in the morning, you may sometimes notice a coating of white, yellow or even darker. We use the tongue scraper to help take this layer off. This layer on the tongue is a sign of Ama, otherwise known as toxins. When the body is free of toxins or ama our life essence (otherwise known as Ojas) flows freely throughout the whole body, and all of its systems and channels, also affecting a flowing of life in general in most cases. But when we have a lot of toxins, or when the ama is high, ojas is limited and we may find that both our body and mind are feeling taxed, sluggish and we may find ourselves suffering with all sorts of health issues - mentally as well as physically.

When our food isn’t being digested properly and nutrients aren’t being absorbed, when we’re not eliminating properly and all of that undigested food accumulates in the stomach, we start feeling gassy, bloated and uncomfortable. All of these contribute to more ama in our systems. This in turn can affect our good bacteria and our metabolic and digestive systems as a whole. If our bodies accumulate too many toxins this way, we can start to feel quite poorly or at the very least have a general feeling of being unwell. This in turn can affect our relationship to our food, what we may or may not want to eat (even if its good for us), and can affect our mood, energy levels and general sense of wellbeing.

How do we know if we have Ama in our body?

Self-massage (abhyanga) is a massage for the whole body which not only helps stimulate the lymph system and remove toxins, but also helps develop a really positive relationship with one’s own body.

To perform abhyanga, you need an old towel and suitable oil. Have a look at the guidance below in how to perform your self-massage. It takes some time and can get messy, so I recommend this for a weekly treat!

Warm a bottle of your oil in a mug of hot water (with the lid on).

Standing/sitting on your towel, place the oil in your palms, rubbing them together and apply the oil from you scalp to the soles of your feet, covering the whole body with oil. You will know how much oil you need, depending on your skin/dosha (eg. Vita will need more than kapha).

Once your body is oiled, massage the scalp for a minute; circular motions on the face and joints; rub up and down on the longer bones; gentle around breasts and massage in a clockwise direction on tummy. As you do this, bring kind and loving thoughts into your awareness about your body. Add some gratitude into that - think of all of the things in your life where your body has served you so well.

Doshas can also change according to so many circumstances such as our diet, our environment, the weather, how we’re feeling, what time we go to bed and so on, but how we respond to these changes can be explained through understanding our doshas. If, however, you have a particular dosha that is in excess, it can be a signal of an imbalance (vikriti), and this is where Ayurveda can be such a brilliant anchor by the fact that you can identify this and use the doshas to help bring you back into balance.

*As with all health care matters, any health issues that you observe need to be seen by your doctor. Ayurveda is a great lifestyle to engage with, in seeking to create a healthy balanced lifestyle with a view to prevent ill health. Your Ayurveda journey may give you the nudge to have those health niggles checked out once identified.

Below are 3 lists that describe the characteristics of each dosha - skip to the dosha result from your quiz to explore more about your qualities…or read the others too to see how your other qualities manifest.

Now it’s time to introduce another Yoga Framework as we ease into our second year together. It feels like the perfect time to welcome Yoga’s sister science: Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is a comprehensive medical system that has been practiced and passed down for generations, throughout India and Sri Lanka, as well as other countries.

The word Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term meaning ‘science of life’. Ayu means ‘life’ or ‘daily living’ and Veda is ‘knowing’. Ayurveda is said to have been practiced in India for over 5000 years and was first recorded in the Vedas, the oldest sacred texts of Hinduism composed in ancient Sanskrit.

Over the coming year, we’ll be diving deeply into this healing system and exploring it’s teachings, practices and lifestyle guidance in order to support us to live happily, heal and learn how best to prevent illness, grow creatively and find balance in all aspects of ourselves and the world in which we inhabit.

As a sister science there is a loose mapping between the two:

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" As we get to know the workings of our mind, we’re better able to navigate our reactions, emotions and responses to challenges and situations. We’re able to witness our patterns and habits and better able to disengage with them, deciding how we want to respond.

Meditation creates an opportunity for us to understand ourselves and expand our sense of self-knowledge and self-awareness, especially if we have been using frameworks, such as the chakra’s, to support us in self-reflection and healing. Meditation supports us in identifying area’s where we may want to seek balance and healing:

“What we have not conquered in the past returns again and again, each time with slightly different faces but fundamentally always the same, until we have confronted the ancient knowledge and untied it.” Satprem

However, we will be revisiting all of the chakra’s as we move forward, continuing to use them as a framework for self-reflection, re-balancing and enhancing our self-awareness throughout our approach to living consciously in connection to ourselves, relationships with others and the environment we inhabit.

Sahasrara Chakra is the seventh and final chakra that we’re delving into (I will touch upon the 8th in the coming weeks).

What makes Sahasrara Chakra stand apart so much from the others is that it doesn’t have a developmental stage in life, it develops throughout all of our life. Sahasrara Chakra’s purpose is that of learning, expanding horizons, exploring relationships to people, objects and environments. Arguably, it’s objective is on growing, enhancing and developing our wisdom. Sahasrara Chakra develops as we allow it to expand and absorb belief systems, our understanding of the world, the ability to question, think and resolve, and instead of asking “Who am I’, we enquire more deeply into “What does it all mean?”

This kind of questioning is often associated with early adulthood onwards, especially for those that have observed adults around them modelling the value of learning, thinking, reading, questioning and spirituality. This is not to say that this modelling is forced in any way - quite the contrary - else it’d just be encouraging limiting beliefs. But seeking knowledge throughout life, with an open-minded adaptable and curious mind, is where a healthy crown chakra resides.

Instead of me writing about it any more, let’s provide the Crown Chakra with a daily practice for you to experience it for the week ahead.

The ancient monument Stone Henge was oriented to capture first light; historically, there were abundance and fertility celebrations; bonfires blazed across hilltops in Celtic (and Norse) traditions, their flames believed to drive away evil spirits and bless the upcoming harvest.

The Solstice carries a bittersweet truth at it’s heart: even as the light reaches it’s fullest, it begins almost imperceptibly, to recede. A reminder, that like everything in life, all radiant things hold within them the seeds of their own turning, and that beauty is most luminous at the very edge of change.

A Summer Solstice Ritual

This ritual is designed for you - something that is yours completely.
