The new entrant, taken aback, quickly turned on her heels, and exited, leaving the trio in solitude once more. The woman who had spoken then crossed the small space, her heels clicking on the tiled floor, and locked the door. With an air of finality, she returned to the sink, joining her friend and Carol in the now secured room.

The Dress

Mara almost left the dress behind.

She had gone to the estate sale looking for a desk, not clothing, and certainly not something she had nowhere to wear. The house belonged to a woman named Evelyn Shaw, who had died at eighty-seven after living alone for nearly twenty years. Mara knew this because the woman running the sale told everyone who came through the door. Evelyn had apparently traveled, collected expensive things, married once, and never had children. By Saturday afternoon, strangers were walking through her bedroom and putting prices on what remained of her life.

The dress hung alone inside a cedar wardrobe. It was ivory silk, simple from a distance and much less simple when Mara touched it. The neckline was low without being vulgar, the waist narrow, and the back dipped far enough that wearing a normal bra would be impossible. Mara checked the label and recognized the designer. Even forty years old, it was worth considerably more than the sixty dollars written on the tag.

“You should try it on,” the woman running the sale said.

“I don’t have anywhere to wear it.”

“That’s never stopped a woman from buying a dress.”

Mara smiled. She was forty-eight, divorced for three years, and had reached the point where she no longer bought things for imaginary occasions. She had enough shoes she didn’t wear and enough wineglasses for dinner parties she never gave. Still, she took the dress into the bathroom and closed the door. It fit. Not perfectly, but close enough to be dangerous.

Mara looked at herself in the mirror longer than she intended. The silk followed her waist and hips without hiding either. Her shoulders were bare, and the neckline showed more of her breasts than she normally displayed outside her bedroom. She turned sideways, then looked over her shoulder at the exposed line of her back.

“My name is Mara Bennett. I’m sorry to bother you. I bought something at Evelyn Shaw’s estate sale.”

Katherine’s face changed immediately.

“What color?”

“Evelyn hated cigarettes,” Katherine said.

Mara smiled. “Apparently that didn’t stop you.”

“Very little did.”

Mara took the note from her purse. Katherine saw it and froze.

“Where did you get that?”

“It was sewn into the dress.”

Katherine took the paper carefully. Her thumb moved across the handwriting.

“I wrote this.”

Mara felt something tighten in her chest.

“For Evelyn?”

“Who else?”

Katherine looked toward a photograph on the mantel.

“She wore that dress the first night we slept together.”

The statement was delivered without embarrassment.

Mara looked at the photograph again.

“Was her husband at the dinner?”

“Of course.”

“That’s bold.”

Katherine laughed. “You should have known Evelyn.”

Katherine smoked while she told the story. She and Evelyn had met in 1979. Friendship became something else slowly, then suddenly. Richard knew eventually. Whether he understood at first was another question. The affair lasted seventeen years.

“Why did it end?”

“It didn’t.”

“Does the dress fit you?”

Mara wore it again that night. This time she did something she had not done since college. She bought a pack of cigarettes. She felt foolish carrying the pack home. She had never been a real smoker. There had been parties in her twenties, drinks outside bars, cigarettes accepted from men she wanted to impress and women she wanted to know better. That had ended decades ago. Still, Katherine and Evelyn had become tangled in her imagination.

“Are you smoking?”

“Apparently.”

“I never knew you smoked.”

“You never asked.”

Anna turned toward her. Mara suddenly became aware of everything. The low neckline. The bare back. The lipstick. The faint taste of tobacco on her tongue.

Anna was aware of it too.

“What is going on with you?” she asked.

Mara smiled.

“I bought a dress.”

“I can see that.”

“It’s forty-four years old.”

Anna stepped closer and touched the silk near Mara’s waist.

Mara looked down at Anna’s hand.

Anna removed it.

“Sorry.”

The room became very quiet. Mara had known Anna was attracted to women. Anna had known the same about Mara. They had discussed former girlfriends, husbands, bad dates, and almost everything else while somehow never discussing each other.

Anna’s eyes moved to Mara’s mouth.

“You have smoke on your breath.”

“Does that bother you?”

“Actually, no.”

Mara took the cigarette from the ashtray where she had left it and drew once. Anna watched. Mara exhaled slowly, turning her face slightly so the smoke drifted past Anna rather than into her face. Anna didn’t move away. Instead, she stepped closer.

“That’s a terrible habit.”

“I know.”

“You look incredibly sexy doing it.”

Mara’s heartbeat changed.

“That’s a terrible reason to encourage me.”

“I didn’t encourage you.”

The next morning, Mara woke with the ivory dress lying across the chair beside her bed. Anna was asleep beside her. Mara slipped quietly from beneath the sheet and picked up the dress. As she did, something fell from the lining.

The note.

Wear this for me.

Mara smiled.

She found a needle and thread in the kitchen drawer.

Anna appeared in the doorway wearing Mara’s robe.

“What are you doing?”

Mara folded the old note carefully.

“Putting something back where it belongs.”

She stitched it into the lining.

Anna watched her.

“You going to tell me what that means?”

“Eventually.”

Mara finished the last stitch and held up the dress.

For forty-four years, four words had remained hidden inside it.

They had belonged first to Katherine.

Then Evelyn.

Now, perhaps, they belonged to nobody.

Or maybe that was the point.

Mara looked at Anna standing barefoot in her kitchen.

“Coffee?”

“Please.”

Mara hung the dress over the back of a chair and started the coffee.

Anna came up behind her and wrapped both arms around her waist.

Mara leaned back against her.

The dress waited beside them.

It had already done enough.

You did.” She took a drag, let the smoke sit a while before she let it out. “I keep trying to figure out what I actually feel about that, and I can’t get a clean answer. Part of me hates it. Twelve years of being the one who managed every crisis in this family, and now I’m the one getting managed.”

“And the other part.”

She was quiet a moment, turning the cigarette slow between her fingers. “The other part likes it more than I want to admit. Nobody’s taken care of anything for me in longer than I can remember, not really, Mark included, especially Mark.”

I looked at her, this woman who’d walked into a motel room eight months ago wearing fury like armor and ended up teaching me more about power than three years with Mark ever had, and felt something complicated settle in my chest, not quite forgiveness, not quite tenderness, something in between that didn’t have a clean name.

“I’m not going to pretend what you did to me doesn’t still sit wrong,” I said. “Simone, the pattern, all of it.”

“I know.”

“But I don’t hate you for it either.” I took a drag. “I think you found somebody who was hurting and you knew exactly which levers to pull, and I think some part of that was real anyway, even if it started as a strategy. I don’t think those two things cancel each other out. I think you’re just going to have to live with both of them being true at the same time.”

“That’s a generous read.”

“I’m not being generous. I’m being accurate. There’s a difference.” I looked over at her. “I’ve got my own levers now, Vivian. You taught me where they are. Don’t mistake me being fair with you for me being soft.”

She almost smiled at that, something rueful in it. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”

I looked up at her. Despite the agony, or perhaps because of it, I had never felt more alive, more cherished, more completely used. I had faced the wooden horse and been broken by it. In that breaking, I had found a strange and exhilarating freedom.

“Thank you, Mistress,” I whispered, and meant it with every fiber of my being.

Vivian didn’t say anything for a long moment. She just looked at me across that small table, the same table where she’d once told me Mark had a good cock and didn’t know what to do with it, the same table where she’d taken my hand and made me feel chosen for the first time in three years. “You think you can just take this from me,” she finally said, but there wasn’t much heat behind it anymore. It sounded more like a question than a threat.

She stood up from the table fast, and for a second I thought she might actually swing at me, old habits from that first fight still living somewhere in both of us. Instead, she came around the table and grabbed a fistful of my shirt and hauled me up out of the chair, and I let her, because I wasn’t done proving my point yet.

“You want control,” she said, right up against my mouth. “Fine, take it. Let’s see if you can actually hold it.”

The sign above the entrance glowed in red neon. Le Fantôme.

Celeste took a deep breath. She checked her surroundings as if she had expected to be followed. She adjusted her sunglasses and stepped inside.

The bar was narrow, smoky, and soaked in velvety shadows. Mirrors lined the walls, but oddly, none gave back a full reflection. They only showed slices of bodies, flashes of eyes, ghosted silhouettes. The music was slow and low, something from a forgotten decade. It was as if she’d stepped back in time.

She slid onto a barstool and ordered a bourbon, neat. The bartender didn’t speak a word.

Celeste didn’t look around. She didn’t need to. She felt her before she saw her.

A woman sat down beside her, not close enough to touch, but close enough that her perfume crawled into Celeste’s chest and settled there, low and warm. Jasmine, familiar and unplaceable at once.

“You’re not from around here,” the woman said. Her voice was low and smoky, just like the room, and it moved through Celeste like a hand trailing down her spine.

Celeste turned and saw her.

Her lips were ruby red, parted just enough to be an invitation. Her dress clung like it had been tailored by hands that knew every one of her curves, the swell of her hip, the narrow of her waist, the place where fabric gave way to shadow. Her hair could’ve been chestnut, black, or auburn, depending on how the light hit it. Celeste noticed her cheekbones, the long line of her throat, the way her collarbone caught the low light like something worth touching.

“I’m just passing through. Taking some time to clear my head,” Celeste said.

“Aren’t we all,” the woman replied, smiling in a way that made the words sound like a dare.

She pulled a pack of cigarettes from nowhere and lit one, a brand Celeste hadn’t seen since she was a teenager. Eve, the same her mother used to smoke, and the scent of the woman’s exhale was as hypnotic as the jasmine, curling around them both.

“My name’s Delphine.”

Celeste didn’t shake her hand. She didn’t have to. The air between them shifted, charged, like the moment before a storm breaks, a current she felt low in her stomach.

They drank slowly, but the silence between words grew shorter, thinner, more intimate. Delphine never asked Celeste’s name. Celeste never offered it.

They talked about the city, about the hotel, and particularly, Room 413. Delphine’s lips curled when she mentioned the painting, a slow, private smile, like she knew something Celeste’s body already suspected.

“You’ve seen it,” Celeste said.

“I’ve lived it,” Delphine replied, taking another drag before passing the cigarette to Celeste, her fingers brushing Celeste’s as she did.

The comment should’ve raised alarms. It didn’t. Celeste took the cigarette and brought it to her lips, feeling the ghost of Delphine’s touch still lingering on the paper. The inhale flooded her with memory and something else, heat, low and insistent, spreading under her skin. The tobacco tasted like a spell, and Delphine was the incantation.

It wasn’t long before they left together.

The hotel hallway was quieter than a graveyard. Celeste’s heels clicked like a slow heartbeat on the polished floor. Delphine walked beside her, silent, close enough that Celeste could feel the warmth coming off her skin. Celeste reached for her room key, only to have Delphine brush her hand away and open the locked door with a simple turn of her wrist.

Again, this should’ve raised alarms. It didn’t.

Inside Room 413, the scent of jasmine hit her again, sharper now, sweet enough to bite. The room was lit only by the bedside lamp and what light slipped through the sheer curtains. The painting watched them. Celeste didn’t look at it, but she knew it was watching.

Delphine stood in the center of the room, lighting another cigarette, her dress catching the shadows like water catches light.

“Do you always bring strangers back to your room?” she asked.

“Only the dangerous ones,” Celeste replied.

Delphine smiled and closed the distance between them.

They kissed like they’d already kissed a thousand times, not soft, not urgent, just inevitable, a slow-building pressure finally allowed to break. Celeste’s sunglasses fell to the carpet. Her fingers found the zipper of Delphine’s dress, and the fabric slid away like it had been waiting all night to be shed. Delphine’s skin underneath was warm, alive, impossibly smooth, and Celeste felt her own breath catch as their bodies pressed together, heat meeting heat.

The bed sighed as they fell into it. There was no hesitation.

Delphine’s hands moved with a confidence that bordered on memory, unhurried, deliberate, mapping every place that made Celeste’s breath catch. Her mouth traced a slow path down Celeste’s collarbone, between her breasts, over the soft plane of her stomach, until her lips were pressed against her womanhood. Each touch was purposeful, as though choreography long since learned by heart. Celeste arched into her, fingers tangling in dark hair, as Delphine’s lips and tongue continued to pleasure her. A low sound escaped Celeste. She didn’t try to hold it back.

Celeste answered with her own hands, peeling the mystery off Delphine’s body inch by inch, learning her by touch, the curve of her hip, the small gasp against her throat, until the two of them were tangled together in sheets. There was heat and sweat, in a taste that mixed jasmine, tobacco, bourbon, and danger, until the room outside their bodies seemed to disappear entirely.

At one point, Celeste paused. Delphine’s face hovered just above hers, flushed, lips parted, breath unsteady.

The light hit her cheek in a strange way. There, just for a second, Celeste saw it: a faint scar, thin and curved, just beneath Delphine’s left eye. The same one from the painting.

She blinked, and the scar was gone. Or maybe it wasn’t.

Delphine kissed her again, deep, and slow enough to erase the question, and Celeste didn’t ask.

After what felt like hours of passion, the two of them lay still. Their limbs were still loosely tangled and skin damp with heat.

Celeste’s fingers traced Delphine’s shoulder in slow circles, as if reading braille only she could understand.

Delphine stared at the ceiling, her breathing quiet.

“Did you mean it?” Celeste whispered.

Delphine turned to face her. “Mean what?”

“When you said you’ve lived the painting.”

Delphine said nothing.

Outside, the city drummed on. But in Room 413, there was only the silence between questions and truths.

Delphine’s eyes softened. “Would you believe me if I told you yes?”

“I don’t know.”

“You want to believe something,” Delphine murmured. “But you don’t know what yet.”

She reached up and brushed a strand of hair from Celeste’s face, her fingers lingering at her temple. “You’re not afraid of me.”

“I should be.”

“Yes, you should.”

Neither of them moved.

Then Delphine pulled Celeste closer again, resting her lips against her shoulder like a brand. “Don’t fall asleep just yet,” she whispered.

“Why?”

“Because it’s always different when you wake up.”

But Celeste did fall asleep.

When she woke, Delphine was gone. The bed still held the shape of her. The pillow still smelled like jasmine. But the woman, the heat, the touch, was already a memory. The cigarette butts in the ashtray proved this hadn’t been a dream.

The painting loomed overhead, quiet as ever.

Only this time, Celeste thought she saw a new shadow in the eyes.

A few weeks later Vivian threw a small dinner at her place, just the circle, no husbands allowed, and about halfway through the night she brought in a woman I didn’t recognize, younger than the rest of us, introduced only as Kayla, a friend of a friend passing through town. Vivian sat her right next to me at the table.

I didn’t think much of it until Vivian spent the next hour watching us talk instead of talking herself, quiet in a way that wasn’t like her, her eyes moving between me and Kayla like she was studying something under glass. Kayla was easy to talk to, funny, a little flirty in a way that felt harmless until I noticed Vivian noticing it.

Later, once everyone else had cleared out, Vivian pulled me into the kitchen and pressed me back against the counter, her mouth rough against my throat, one hand fisted in my hair, and it took me a second to realize the heat coming off her wasn’t just want. It was something angrier underneath it.

Two weeks later Vivian brought me to a party at a house out past the reservoir, told me it was time I met the people she actually trusted. I showed up with a story ready about how I got the fading bruise still visible under my makeup, a stupid fall off a curb, but nobody there asked. I got the sense pretty quick that questions weren’t really how that group operated.

It was a good-sized crowd, mostly women, a handful of men scattered around the edges of it like furniture nobody paid much attention to. Vivian introduced me around fast and loose, first names only, no context, like everyone already understood the rules of the room without needing them spelled out. I met a woman named Toni who ran a bar downtown and talked with her hands. I met a woman named Renee who barely said ten words the whole night but watched everything. And I met Simone.

Simone had Vivian’s number the second I said mine, I could tell, the way her eyes moved from Vivian to me and back again, doing the math. She was tall, dark hair pulled back tight, a cigarette already burning between two fingers before we’d even finished shaking hands.

“So, you’re the one,” she said.

“The one what,” I said.

“Doesn’t matter. Vivian doesn’t bring people around unless they’re the one.” She looked me over, unhurried about it, the way you’d size up a used car. “You’ve got good bones. I can see why she picked you.”

“She didn’t pick me. I was already there.”

Simone smiled like that was the funniest thing she’d heard all week. “Sure, you were, honey.” She held out her pack. “Smoke?”

I took one. She lit it for me, cupping her hand around the flame even though there wasn’t any wind inside, an old habit from somewhere, and I got the sense everything about Simone was an old habit from somewhere, practiced smooth enough it read as natural.

“How long have you known Vivian,” I asked.

“Long enough.” She took a drag and looked past me at Vivian, who was across the room laughing at something Toni said, head tipped back, completely at ease in a way I hadn’t seen from her yet. “We go back before Mark. Before most things, honestly.”

“You two were close.”

“We were something.” Simone’s eyes came back to me, and there was an edge underneath the friendliness now, something I couldn’t quite name yet. “Vivian’s good at that. Being something to people. Ask her sometime what she was to me before she decided what I needed to be instead.”

“What’s that supposed to mean.”

Part 2

Her jacket hit the floor and neither of us said another word for a while. She kissed like she talked, all teeth and intention, like she’d been saving something up for years and finally found somewhere to spend it. She walked me back toward the bed and I let her, because that part I wasn’t going to fight.

“Say my fucking name,” she said against my mouth, working the buttons on my dress.

“I don’t know your fucking name,” I admitted, and the whole ridiculous night nearly cracked open into a laugh.

She pulled back just far enough to look at me, something sharp cutting through the want in her face. “Vivian,” she said. “Three years and he never once said it in front of you.”

“Dahlia,” I told her, and I watched her file it away somewhere behind her eyes.

“Dahlia,” she repeated, testing the weight of it, and then she kissed me again, harder, like she meant to prove she could take whatever I gave her and want more.

She tasted like cheap wine and expensive perfume, and I took it all in, my hands finding the hem of her shirt and pulling it over her head. Her skin was cool against mine, and I traced the line of her collarbone with my tongue, feeling her shiver. She unhooked my bra with a flick of her fingers, her nails scraping against my back as she pulled me closer. We fell onto the bed, a tangle of limbs and desperation, her mouth finding my nipple, her teeth grazing it just enough to make me gasp. I slid my hand between her legs, feeling the heat there, and she bucked against my palm, a silent demand. I obliged, my fingers finding her clit, circling it until she was writhing beneath me, her breath coming in ragged pants. She flipped us over, her thighs straddling my hips, her hands pinning my wrists above my head. She lowered herself onto me, and I arched my back, taking her in, our bodies moving in a rhythm that was both punishing and perfect. Part One - The Arrival

Celeste Rivers didn’t believe in ghosts. She believed in heartbreak, though. She believed in lawyers, and damaging courtroom transcripts. She believed in seeing her name dragged across multiple gossip blogs in the space of a week. Mostly, she believed in betrayal and broken promises. Ghosts? No. At least not yet.

The Blue Indigo Hotel was tucked behind a wrought iron gate off New Orleans’ Burgundy Street. It was too beautiful and too hidden to ever be listed on a travel app. The sign out front lit up in gold letters.

The bellhop didn’t smile when he took her suitcase. He respectfully nodded at her, like he knew she wasn’t here on vacation.

Inside, it smelled like a mix of eucalyptus and old wood. The main lobby had velvet chairs and tall windows. The chandelier looked like it dated back to Prohibition. Celeste wore dark sunglasses even though it was already dusk. Even this far from home, she wanted privacy. She kept them on when she reached the front desk.

“Reservation under Rivers,” she said, brushing her hair behind one ear.

The man behind the counter looked to be in his early forties. He had a salt-and-pepper goatee and looked way too sharp to be working reception.

“Room 413,” he said. “The suite.”

“I didn’t book a suite.”

“You didn’t,” he agreed. “But everything else is full.”

Celeste slid her sunglasses down just enough to give him a look. “OK, then what’s the catch?”

His smile didn’t seem genuine. “Some guests say it’s haunted.”

Celeste let out a dry laugh. “That’s just perfect. Add it to the list.”

He handed her a key. It wasn’t a card, but an actual brass key. It was heavy in her palm and had a blue tassel at the end. The tag read Room 413.

“If you need anything,” he added, “dial zero. Or just come back down. We’re always watching.”

She looked at him funny.

He winked. “You know what I mean; available. Always available.”

The elevator was old and slow, the kind with a rattling gate you had to pull shut. She half-expected it to groan “turn back now, while you can” but it just clanked its way up to the fourth floor like it had done a thousand times before.

The hallway was dim. It wasn’t dark, exactly, just… moody. Like something from an old vampire movie. The walls were deep navy, gold trim, floor was covered in thick carpet. The hallway was so quiet it made Celeste’s thoughts feel louder.

Room 413 was at the end.

The moment she opened the door, she felt it. She wasn’t sure what it was, but she could certainly feel it. Not cold. Not warm. Just something. There was a strange shift in the air.

The room was beautiful. High ceilings. A velvet fainting couch. An old four-poster bed draped in white lace. The walls were lined with shadowy art. The soft light spilled through the tall windows that faced the courtyard below.

And on the wall, directly above the bed, hung the painting.

She stopped in her tracks.

It was a woman’s face. Or rather, a collage of two faces; fragmented, cracked, and faded like peeling wallpaper. But her eyes. They stared right back at Celeste. And the lips, painted deep red, looked freshly kissed.

Celeste felt the tiniest chill creep along the back of her neck.

She walked closer.

It was just paint. Just brushstrokes. Simple canvas on wood, with layers of aging lacquer. But something in the face looked familiar, like a dream you couldn’t quite place. The woman was beautiful, but there was damage there. Texture. A crack across her cheek. A smear near her mouth. As if someone had tried to erase her but failed.

Celeste poured herself a bourbon from the courtesy tray and drank it while she continued to stare at the face that was looking back at her. She never brought luggage larger than a carry-on, and all her clothes were still folded. Her laptop stayed zipped. She wasn’t here to write emails.

She was here to stop remembering.

Later, she lay in the quiet. Her legs were tangled in the hotel sheets, and the scent of old jasmine drifted in through the window. The painting stared down at her.

She tried not to look. She turned onto her side. Then her back again. Then, eventually, she closed her eyes.

The eighteen-wheeler groaned up the long grade of Route 9 the cab, Lena gripped the wheel. The sound of the diesel engine was a familiar lullaby against the silence. She’d been driving for twelve hours. The coffee in her thermos had long gone cold and the radio was a wash of static and evangelical preachers. Then she saw her.

A figure, just a shadow really, standing by the side of the road where there was nothing but scrub brush and emptiness for fifty miles in either direction. A thumb, barely visible, went up. Lena never stopped for hitchhikers. It was the first rule of the road. But something about the stillness of this one, the way she didn’t hop or wave but just stood there like she’d grown from the cracked asphalt, made her ease off the accelerator.

The air brakes hissed. It was a scream in the quiet. The passenger door creaked open. The woman climbed up, moving with a grace that seemed out of place on this dusty road. She was small, dressed in worn jeans and a thin top that did nothing to hide the lean muscle of her arms. She smelled of cigarettes and something else, like rain on hot pavement. She didn’t say a word, just slammed the door and settled into the seat, staring out into the black.

“Where you headed?” Lena’s voice was rough, unused.

The woman turned her head. Her eyes were dark, almost black, and held a look that was both exhausted and fiercely alert.

“Away.”

That was it. One word. Lena didn’t press. She just put the rig back in gear and merged onto the empty highway. They drove for another hour in silence,. The only sounds were the engine and the occasional hiss of the tires. It wasn’t uncomfortable. It was tense. Like the air was charged, waiting for a lightning strike.

Finally, Lena couldn’t take it. She reached into the glove box, pulled out a pack of cigarettes, and tapped one out. The woman’s eyes followed the motion. Lena lit it, took a deep drag, and then held the pack out. The woman took one, her fingers brushing against Lena’s. The touch was electric, like a jolt that shot straight up Lena’s arm.

“You got a name?” Lena asked, smoke curling from her lips.

The woman put the cigarette between her own lips, leaned forward, and waited. Lena understood. She flicked the lighter for her. The flame danced in the dark, and cupped her hand around the woman’s face to shield it. The woman’s eyes were locked on hers, and in that moment, Lena felt a shift in the power dynamic. She was the one in the driver’s seat, in the big rig, but this woman; this woman was in control.

“Jax,” she she finally answered. It was the first real sound she’d made.

Lena pulled into a gravel lot of a 24-hour truck stop that looked like it had been forgotten since the seventies. The neon sign for the diner flickered, promising coffee and little else.

“I’m grabbing a shower,” Lena said, more to break the spell than anything.

She needed a moment to clear her head. Jax just nodded without moving.

Lena grabbed her duffel and headed for the concrete block building that housed the showers. The water was hot and hard, beating against her skin, and she tried to wash off the feeling of Jax’s eyes on her. It didn’t work. She stepped out, wrapping a thin towel around herself, and Jax was there. Leaning against the doorway of the shower stall, blocking the exit. She hadn’t made a sound.

“You’re running from something,” Lena said. It wasn’t a question.

Jax’s gaze dropped, taking in the water droplets on Lena’s skin, the towel barely covering her.

“Aren’t we all?”

In one fluid motion, Jax closed the distance between them. She didn’t ask. She didn’t hesitate. She grabbed the back of Lena’s neck and pulled her into a kiss. It wasn’t gentle; it was a claiming. Jax’s other hand tore the towel away, her fingers digging into Lena’s hip, bruising. Lena gasped in a mix of shock and unadulterated lust. She tried to push back, to regain some control, but Jax was stronger than she looked. She spun Lena around, slamming her breasts against the cool, damp tile of the shower wall.

“You want to know who I’m running from?” Jax’s voice was a hot whisper against Lena’s ear as she pinned Lena in place. “Someone like me. Someone who takes what they want.”

Jax’s hand slid down Lena’s stomach, her touch rough and sure. Lena’s body responded instantly, arching back against her, a soft moan escaping her lips. This wasn’t about connection. It was about power, about the violent, thrilling release of giving it up to a stranger who might be more dangerous than anyone she’d ever met.

ax’s fingers found her clit, circling with a pressure that was almost painful, sending sparks of pleasure shooting through her.

“Is this what you want?” Jax growled, her teeth grazing the sensitive skin of Lena’s shoulder.

Lena could only answer with a choked cry as Jax thrust two fingers inside her, hard and deep. There was no teasing. It was a raw, possessive act. Jax fucked her against the wall. Her rhythm was relentless. Her free hand held Lena’s wrists behind her back.

The pleasure was sharp, overwhelming, and bordering on pain. It was messy and brutal and everything Lena’s life on the road was not. She came with a strangled scream. Her body shuddered. Her knees went weak.

Jax held her up for a moment longer before releasing her. Lena slid down the wall to the floor, breathing hard, her body humming. Jax looked down at her, her expression unreadable. She turned and left without a backward glance.

Lena sat there for a long time. She got up and dressed slowly. Her muscles ached.

When she walked back out to the truck, Jax was sitting in the passenger seat, smoking a cigarette, as if nothing had happened. As if she hadn’t just completely dismantled Lena in a dirty truck stop shower.

Lena climbed back into the cab. Her hands were trembling slightly as she put the key in the ignition. She looked over at Jax, who was already lighting another cigarette for Lena.

“So,” Lena said, her voice steadier than she felt. “Where to now, Jax?”

Jax took a long drag and blew the smoke out slowly. She turned her dark eyes to Lena and gave a small, dangerous smile.

“Just drive.”

As soon as she walked in, she felt the tension.

The air in the bar was thick with it, like cigarette smoke clinging to velvet curtains. Veronica Dahl adjusted her trench coat, her cigarette dangling precariously from her lips.

The click of her heels against the marble floor was steady, deliberate.

She was there for a reason, and she hated reasons. They always led to trouble.

Veronica had no intention of leaving without blood; or answers.

She spotted Roxanne Kane perched at the bar like a viper coiled on a high wire. Her platinum blonde hair was a neon sign screaming danger

Her red lips curled into a smirk that could cut a man in half.

Roxie wasn’t just trouble; she was the kind that could drag you down by the ankles and all the while.

“Dahl,” Roxie spoke as Veronica approached. Her voice was like whiskey poured over broken glass. “Didn’t think you had the guts to show up.”

Veronica took a drag from her cigarette, exhaling a cloud of smoke that seemed to wrap the two women in their own private battlefield.

“I’ve got guts. What I don’t have is patience. I want that necklace around your neck, Roxie? The one you lifted off Diane Martin.”

“Straight to business.” Roxie leaned back, swirling her drink like she was stirring up trouble. “You always were a no-nonsense bitch. Boring as fuck, but efficient.”

Veronica’s hand twitched toward the .38 hidden in her coat pocket, but she kept it steady. “I’m not here for a history lesson, Roxie. Hand it over, or I’ll remove it myself.”

Roxie’s laugh was low and dirty. “You think you’re the only one packing heat? Sweetheart, I’ve got more tricks up my sleeve than you’ve got in that cheap ass coat.”

The next moment happened faster than a heartbeat. Roxie’s drink flew through the air. It was a liquid fireball of bourbon and ice aimed straight at Veronica’s face.

She sidestepped, her cigarette tumbling to the floor as the glass shattered against the wall behind her.

The room fell silent, all eyes on the two women locked in a stare-down hotter than a loaded gun barrel

Veronica returned volley; her fist connecting with Roxie’s jaw in a crack that echoed through the bar.

Roxie retaliated with a knee to the gut, doubling Veronica over just long enough for her to grab a bottle off the bar. Roxie hurled it like a sledgehammer.

Veronica ducked as the bottle exploded against the marble floor in a spray of glass and booze.

They continued their struggle; each strike landing with the kind of ferocity only pure hatred could fuel.

Roxie managed to pin Veronica against the bar, her hand tightening around her throat. “You should’ve stayed in the shadows where you belong, Dahl.”

Veronica grinned through blood stained teeth. “I like the light. Shows me my targets.”

She drove her knee into Roxie’s stomach, sending her sprawling onto a nearby table.

Before Roxie could recover, Veronica grabbed her by the hair, pulling her close enough to smell the fear beneath her perfume.

“This belongs to Ms. Martin” Veronica growled; yanking the necklace from Roxie’s neck before tossing her aside like yesterday’s trash.

The room buzzed with nervous energy as Veronica straightened her coat and lit another cigarette.

Roxie lay crumpled on the floor, shouting through bloodied lips. “This isn’t over, Dahl. You hear me bitch?” “This isn’t over.

”

“It never is,” Veronica muttered, smoke curling around her words as she strode toward the exit.

Outside, the rain poured like a bad omen, but Veronica didn’t care. Trouble was her currency, and she had plenty to spend.

I imagine grabbing her by the hair, forcing her to her knees, and seeing just how helpful she can be with that smart mouth of her lips wrapped around my clit, her tongue lapping at me until I’m shaking and screaming her name.

Her resilience is attractive. I will give her that. When I shut her down with a cool, “Let’s keep it focused on the Q3 projections, Crystal,” she doesn’t flinch. She just gives me that little smirk, a silent acknowledgment that she knows exactly what I’m doing, and she’s happy to play along. Yet, I’m keeping her at arm’s length; a short leash, if you will. It’s a line in the sand, and we both know it’s made of fucking sugar.

There’s a part of me, a dark and hungry part of me, that wants to dive into the potential chaos of it all. I want to see where this connection might lead. I want to know if that fire in her eyes is just for show, or if she’d actually burn with me if I let the match drop. I kind of want to see the look on her face when I finally snap, when I pin her against the wall of the elevator and fuck her with my fingers until she’s a sobbing, dripping mess, right as the doors open on the executive floor. I know, I am a little mischievous.

But another part of me is a little cautious. Let’s call that the common sense part of me, the part that pays a mortgage and gives a shit about her 401(k). The office isn’t exactly the ideal breeding ground for this kind of raw, primal fuckery, and the last thing I need is for our budding whatever-this-is to blossom into a full-blown shitshow of HR complaints and whispered rumors. The thought of it is almost enough to kill the mood.

For now, it’s a game of patience and restraint, a balancing act between succumbing to the allure and maintaining the professionalism expected of us. But every day, the line gets a little blurrier. The looks last a little longer. The “accidental” touches become a little more deliberate. I’m starting to crave the daily hit of her attention, the way it makes me feel powerful and desired and utterly out of control. And I know, with a sick, thrilling certainty, that it’s only a matter of time before one of us breaks. And I have a feeling, when it happens, it’s going to be fucking spectacular.

The cigarette had burned itself down to the filter before I realized I had stopped smoking it. I crushed it into the ashtray and glanced at the clock again.
Thirty minutes. Long enough for excuses. Long enough for second thoughts. Long enough for somebody to lose their nerve.

Outside, rain streaked across the motel window, turning the parking lot into a blurry watercolor of taillights and reflections. Every set of headlights that turned in made my pulse jump. Everyone that kept driving made me smile a little more. Because tonight wasn’t about hope. Tonight was about closure.

I poured another finger of bourbon, letting it sit untouched in my hand. The room smelled of smoke, cheap air freshener, and the perfume I’d put on knowing it probably wouldn’t matter. He had promised he was coming.

Then again, his wife promised to kick my ass if she ever got me alone. The funny thing was I no longer cared which promise got kept first. I looked at my phone. No messages. No apologies. I reached into my purse and pulled out the small envelope I’d been carrying for a week. Inside were his apartment key, the pictures, the handwritten notes, and the silver lighter he’d left on my kitchen counter months ago. Every memory weighed less than I remembered. I set the envelope beside the ashtray. The clock clicked over to thirty-one minutes.

Then headlights rolled into the parking lot. A black SUV. The engine idled, then the driver door opened. It wasn’t him who stepped out. She was wearing a dark leather jacket and the expression of a woman who had spent the drive rehearsing every possible ending. She spotted me through the window. I didn’t flinch. After a moment she opened the motel room door without knocking. Neither of us spoke for several seconds. Finally, she looked at the envelope.

“So,” she said quietly. “You finally made up your mind.”

I slid the envelope across the table. “No,” I answered. “I made it up thirty minutes ago.”

She looked from the envelope back to me. “And him?”

I smiled for the first time all evening. “He had thirty minutes to decide which one of us he wanted to disappoint.”

Outside, tires crunched across wet pavement. Another car had just pulled into the lot.
Moments later, the doorknob rattled. He was here. He stood there, silhouetted against the parking lot lights, a look of stupid relief on his face like he’d just won a race he didn’t know he was running. His eyes flicked from me to her, and the relief drained away, replaced by a slow, dawning horror.

“Well,” he managed, his voice a dry rasp. “This is... unexpected.”

His wife didn’t turn. She took a slow sip of my bourbon; her eyes locked on mine over the rim of the glass. “Don’t flatter yourself, Mark. Your little side piece and I were just getting acquainted.”

I smiled, a real one this time, and leaned back in the chair.

She looked at me. “Mark’s always been late, hasn’t he? To dinner. To anniversaries. To his own goddamn funeral.”

She set the glass down and licked a drop of bourbon from her lower lip. Her gaze was electric. “I’ve been wondering what you taste like. Until now, I’ve only tasted you on his tongue.”

The air thickened. Mark stood frozen in the doorway, a useless prop in a scene he’d lost all control of. “What the fuck is this?” he asked.

“This,” I said, finally looking at him, “is what happens when two women get tired of sharing each other’s scraps. We decided to have the whole meal.”

She stood up, moving with a sexy grace that belied the tension in her shoulders. She walked around the table, her fingers trailing across the wood until they reached my hand. She didn’t stop. Her fingers laced with mine.

As you well know, Mark has a good cock,” she said. Her eyes never left mine, and her voice was a conspiratorial whisper for me alone. “But he doesn’t know what to do with it. Does he, baby? Just jackhammers away like he’s trying to break concrete.”

A choked sound came from the doorway. “You’re... you’re both insane.”

“Maybe,” I conceded, squeezing her hand. “Or maybe we’re just the first sane people in this whole fucking mess. Tell me, does he still cry after he comes? Pretend it’s just sweat?”

Her lips parted in a silent, wicked laugh. “Every goddamn time. Pathetic, isn’t it? All that talk, and he’s just a little boy who needs his mommy.”

I let go of her hand and stood, closing the distance between us until we were inches apart. The perfume, the bourbon, the faint scent of leather from her jacket; it was making me fucking wet. I reached out and tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, my fingers brushing the soft skin of her neck.“I’ve thought about killing him,” I whispered in her ear. “But I’ve thought about fucking you more.”

Her breath hitched, just a little. Her hand came up to rest on my hip. It was possessive and sure. “I brought a gun,” she breathed back, her thumb stroking the fabric of my dress. “But I think I’d rather use my hands.”

She stepped closer, her body flush against mine. The leather of her jacket was cool against my skin, but underneath I could feel the heat radiating from her. “You know, for three years I’ve imagined scratching your eyes out,” she murmured, her lips grazing my cheek. “But now that I’m here, I’m thinking there are better things to do with these hands.”

My fingers tightened in her hair. “Like what?” I challenged, my voice dropping to a husky whisper.

“Like seeing if you taste as good on my tongue as you do on his.”

Her mouth found mine, hard, demanding, tasting of bourbon and something wilder. I bit her lower lip, not gently, and she responded by pressing me harder against the table. The edge dug into my back, but I barely noticed. All I could focus on was the heat between us, the battle for dominance in every touch.

Mark made another choked sound. “This is insane. You hate each other.”

She broke the kiss but didn’t move away, her forehead resting against mine. “Hate is just passion without direction,” she said, her voice ragged. “And right now, I have a very clear direction in mind.” Her hand slid from my hip to my ass, squeezing hard enough to make me gasp.

“Is that all you’ve got?” I taunted, grabbing her jacket and pulling her closer. “I expected more from someone who promised to kick my ass.”
She laughed, a low, dangerous sound. “Oh, I’ll kick your ass. Later. Right now I want to see if those moans he bragged about are real.”

Her mouth found my throat, teeth grazing the sensitive skin. I arched against her, my own hands exploring the curves beneath that leather jacket. “They’re real,” I breathed out. “But you’ll have to work harder than he ever did to earn them.”

Mark finally seemed to find his legs, stumbling back a step. “Stop it. Both of you. This isn’t happening.”

“Oh, it’s happening,” she said, turning her head to look at him over her shoulder, her body still pressed against mine. “You’re just not invited.” She looked back at me. “The question is, do we let him watch? Or is this party just for the two of us?”

I let my thumb trace the line of her jaw, feeling her pulse hammering under my touch. I tilted my head, my gaze flicking to the useless man still gaping in the doorway.

“Get the fuck out,” I called out. “And don’t wait up for her to get home anytime soon. She and I have a lot of unfinished business with each other.”

The door slammed shut behind him, and the lock clicked into place with a finality that made my pulse race. She turned back to me, her eyes dark with desire and something else. It was recognition. We were two sides of the same coin, both betrayed, both wanting something more than what we’d been given.

“I meant what I said about kicking your ass,” she said, her hands gripping my shoulders.

“I know,” I replied, my fingers working the zipper of her jacket. “But I’m going to make you earn it.”

The Conclusion

They walked across M&M. Neither woman hurried. People noticed. A woman sitting on the steps of her trailer stopped talking when she saw them. Two men working underneath a truck looked up. Someone standing near the laundry room watched them pass. Vivian ignored everyone. Marissa enjoyed it.

“You know they’re going to talk.”

“They always talk.”

“They haven’t seen us walking anywhere together since you took my trailer park.”

Vivian looked at her.

“My trailer park.”

Marissa laughed.

“Keep saying that.”

“I will.”

“You trying to piss me off before we get there?”

“Would it help?”

“Probably.”

Vivian smiled.

They continued walking. Marissa took a drag from her cigarette.

“So what’s the plan?”

“I talk to Carolyn.”

“And I beat the shit out of Megan.”

“If she stays out of it, you stay out of it.”

Marissa looked disappointed.

“That’s fucking boring.”

“Try to control yourself.”

“I haven’t had a decent fight since you.”

Vivian glanced at her.

“Is that a compliment?”

“Don’t get excited.”

“Too late.”

Marissa laughed. They walked several more steps. Then Marissa looked at Vivian.

“You tell Linda you asked me?”

“No.”

“Planning to?”

“No.”

Marissa smiled.

“Interesting.”

“Don’t start.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You’re smiling.”

“I like secrets.”

Vivian dropped her cigarette and crushed it beneath her shoe.

“That’s what worries me.”

Marissa stopped walking. Vivian took two more steps before realizing. She turned.

“What?”

Marissa stood there.

“Tell me something.”

“What?”

“If you could handle Carolyn alone, why’d you really ask me?”

Vivian stared at her.

“We already did this.”

“No.”

Marissa took another drag.

“You gave me enough to get me out of the office.”

“And it worked.”

“I’m still asking.”

Vivian walked back toward her. She stopped close enough that Marissa had to tilt her head slightly to look at her.

“I wanted you with me.”

Marissa held her gaze.

“That all?”

Vivian looked at the cigarette between Marissa’s fingers. Then back at her.

“No.”

Marissa waited. Vivian smiled.

“But you’ll have to survive Megan to find out the rest.”

The following afternoon, Vivian sat on a park bench outside the management office shortly before five. She stayed in the car. Through the office window, she could see Linda moving around behind her desk. Marissa sat at the smaller desk near the front, finishing paperwork and occasionally answering the phone. Vivian waited. At five-seven, Linda came outside. She locked the office door behind her and walked toward her car. Then she noticed Vivian. Linda changed direction. She walked over.

“You’ve been sitting here long?”

“Few minutes.”

“You need something?”

“No.”

Linda looked at her.

“Then why the fuck are you sitting here on a park bench?”

Vivian took a drag from her cigarette.

“Enjoying the scenery.”

Linda laughed.

“Bullshit.”

Vivian smiled.

“Go home Linda.”

Linda sat next to her.

“You coming over to see me later?”

Vivian hesitated.

“Maybe.”

Linda noticed. Vivian knew she noticed. Neither woman said anything. Linda leaned over and kissed her. Vivian kissed her back.

“Call me.”

“I will.”
