That means the force has to look again at two parts of it, because they weren’t handled properly first time.

Most of these reviews don’t go the complainant’s way and only about a quarter to a third get upheld, which is why two points is not nothing. After the arrest, the charge and a case that collapsed in court, I will take a result that says West Yorkshire Police can’t just write this off and walk away.

If you want the background on this story, it’s here: the formal complaint, the IOPC escalation, the charge, and the court outcome.

The discrimination part of the complaint goes back for investigation. This is the same force whose complaints team told me gender-critical beliefs were not even protected under the Equality Act. I had to explain the law to them on the phone.

The part about how details of the charge and other personal information got out before I was even told also goes back for further enquiries.

The bodycam point is closed. Their position is the camera was switched off while I was getting dressed.

The force should be contacting me. It was a clear warning aimed at every other woman trying to earn a living in independent music: keep your mouth shut or this can happen to you. This wasn’t a quiet professional disagreement. It was about the music industry enforcing an ideology and making sure the consequences were visible enough that other women would think twice.

The industry never stops going on about women speaking their truth and empowerment. You hear it in interviews, festival statements and brand campaigns. But the second a female artist states the plain fact that women are adult human females, all that talk is exposed as empty. The support only lasts as long as you stay inside the lines they’ve decided are acceptable. Step outside them and the same people who claimed to want honest female voices will turn on you without hesitation. That’s how a captured industry decides which women are allowed to keep working. The fear is deliberate and it’s meant to spread.

Being made an example of only works if people can see it. The gigs disappearing, the venues going silent, the industry gossip and the pile-ons online all have to be noticeable, because if the punishment stays private it fails. Other artists need to see the calendar empty out, they need to hear you were dropped, and they need to watch the work dry up. Only then does it become a story women start telling themselves: look what happened to her. I can’t risk that.

The language they use at the time is always soft. It’s dressed up as professionalism or concern. “This could damage your career.” “We’re just looking after the brand.” “We’re protecting the space.” That wording is chosen carefully. It makes the punishment sound reasonable and almost caring while it’s being done, which makes it much harder to fight. You’re not being silenced, you’re being “advised.” You’re not being frozen out, the industry is just protecting itself. It lets them look measured while the actual consequences for the artist are brutal. This is how ideological capture works in practice. Soft language on the surface, hard consequences underneath.

The costs go far beyond the lost income, though that hit is real and practical. There’s the isolation when people start keeping their distance, the messages that stop getting replies, the collaborators who suddenly go quiet, and the feeling that you’ve become someone others are careful about being seen with. There’s the month after month reality of watching the work that paid the bills vanish, and the constant mental load of knowing you’ve been marked. Once you’re the example they often paint you as bitter, obsessive or unstable, and that character assassination is part of the process because it moves the attention away from what was done to you and onto your supposed personality, so it’s easier for everyone else to treat you as the problem.

A lot of female artists saw what happened and stayed quiet, and I understand why. The full weight of it, professional, social, financial and psychological, is designed to make other women run a careful calculation before they say anything in public. You start weighing every statement against the possibility of losing your livelihood. Younger artists feel it even harder because they have less to fall back on and more to lose. When they see someone who’s already been out on the road and built a following get frozen out, the warning hits with extra force. The industry has made the cost of honesty clear.

There’s a big difference between online abuse and the industry itself closing ranks. Online pile-ons are hostile and draining, but when agents, venues and promoters either join in or stay silent the example becomes far more powerful. These are the people who control access to stages and therefore to money. Independent artists live off live shows, and when those gates close the punishment stops being just reputational and becomes material. It takes away the practical means of continuing. This is what institutional capture looks like. Not just noisy activists, but the professional infrastructure enforcing the same rules.

The damage doesn’t end with the initial drop. Years later venues can still hesitate, future agents get cautious, and the reputation of being “difficult” or “risky” settles in and becomes hard to shift. On top of the original loss you also carry the ongoing work of having to keep proving what happened, laying out the timeline again, showing the evidence, and pushing back against the cleaned-up version that starts circulating. That repeated labour is exhausting and it’s part of the long-term cost.

Later, when the ideology starts losing ground, the people who enforced it often begin changing the story. The career-ending threat gets reframed as “advice,” the blacklisting becomes “the market,” and you get recast as the unreasonable one who brought it on herself by refusing to stay quiet. This rewriting lets the warning keep circulating while they distance themselves from what they actually did. It’s a familiar pattern once the pressure starts to ease. The same people who enforced the line suddenly pretend they were never that rigid.

The fear doesn’t only silence other women. It can change what you yourself feel able to put on stage. After being made an example of you have to decide whether to keep writing and performing with the same honesty or start editing yourself for safety. When enough women make that calculation the music becomes safer and less direct. The sharp edges get rounded off. The things that feel most true become the things you hesitate to say. Fans who want honest female voices lose out, and over time the range of what gets said and sung in public gets narrower. A captured industry doesn’t just punish individuals. It slowly narrows what art is allowed to exist.

That’s the real point of making an example of someone. It’s not only about punishing one person. It’s about installing a shared warning that keeps doing the work of control for years: look what happened to her. I can’t risk that.

When the example refuses to stay buried, when you keep speaking and the original record remains visible, it starts to weaken the whole mechanism. The cautionary tale only works properly if the details stay hidden. Once people can see what actually happened, the story loses some of its power to intimidate.

That’s why I’ve been documenting everything and speaking up the best I can. Documenting it publicly makes it harder for the industry to keep pretending the pressure isn’t real, and hopefully it gives a bit of cover to women who might want to speak later.

Subscribe now

Buy Me A Coffee

Midnight Mango’s Rapid-Onset Dementia and the Great Rewrite

In 2023 the boss of Midnight Mango sent me an email that was crystal clear and left no room for argument.

Louise Distras

In 2023 the boss of Midnight Mango sent me an email that was crystal clear and left absolutely no room for argument. The company position was “Transgender women are women.” They’d already set up a steering group and written themselves a Gender Diversity Manifesto, as if a small booking agency needed its own political constitution. He told me straight that if I carried on saying women are adult human females it would damage my career even further. They were not neutral and they were not interested in any kind of discussion. Not long after that email they dropped me.

The gigs that paid the bills disappeared almost overnight, the calendar went dead, venues that used to book me stopped answering, and I’m still living with the fallout years later. href="https://www.facebook.com/MidnightMango/posts/pfbid04MmqM3UKTXcVEwuawoNJ9vvsxKtP7aJJbppAx5MwHmCzz4mf4u5crGP7cW14yn48l">Facebook page, in the comments, casually announcing that “we do believe women are adult females,” as if the earlier email never existed and none of the damage that followed from it ever happened. One minute the basic truth is treated like a firing offence, and the next minute it’s presented as something they’ve always believed. There’s no explanation, no apology, just a slippery switch of words and a hope that everyone has already moved on and forgotten. The same man who once treated a biological fact like a sackable offence is now rewriting history in the comments section like nothing happened.

Look at the excuses he’s using now. It was only ever helpful guidance. He tried to help. The real problem was that nobody wanted the music any more. Of course women are adult females. It’s all ancient history with nothing more to discuss. This is how the rewrite works in practice. The hard line that cost someone their living gets turned into “advice.” The decision to drop an artist becomes “I was trying to help.” The blacklisting gets blamed on the market. The person who got targeted is made out to be the problem for speaking up. And the whole thing gets brushed off as ancient history so the original story can disappear. It’s transparent, and it’s cowardly.

I’ve seen this pattern enough times to recognise it straight away. When an ideology starts falling apart, the people who enforced it the hardest don’t stand up and admit they got it wrong. They just start walking it back, softening the language, and hoping enough time has passed that no one looks too closely at what they actually did. What he did wasn’t only about one artist. Freezing out a female independent artist for stating a basic biological fact sends a clear warning to every other woman trying to earn a living in this industry. It also shows a complete failure to understand the relationship between a woman artist and the women who come to her shows. The recognition, the shared reality, and the way the songs land differently when the person on stage is speaking from the same sexed experience are things a male booking agent was never going to grasp while he was busy writing manifestos and playing politics.

I never had any of these problems when I was with United Talent Agency, Sound Talent Group and FKP Scorpio. They are much bigger, better and more professional agencies. I had been with them since 2017 and my booking agent, Bex Majors, was brilliant. She just got on with the job of representing me, had me out on the road constantly playing big festivals like Slam Dunk, 2000 Trees and Glastonbury, and the shows were proper packed rooms, good crowds, the kind of nights that remind you why you do this. There were no lectures about what I was allowed to believe, do, or say… just solid professional representation that let me get on with being a working musician.

When I needed new UK representation for the second album tour, I signed with Midnight Mango from March to November 2023, and it was hands down the biggest mistake of my entire music career. Instead of focusing on booking shows and looking after the artist, the boss was busy writing his own little manifesto, setting up a steering group, and playing at student politics like a fully grown bearded man who never left the union. While proper agencies get on with the actual job of representation, this one was small, ideological, and more interested in enforcing a political line than in doing the work. It showed. For all the posturing, he seemed to forget that it is the artists who generate the work and their audiences who pay the bills.

Either women are adult human females or they are not. You can’t put the opposite in writing, enforce it hard enough to cost someone their living, and then later claim you always believed the truth when it becomes convenient. The original story is still there. The email was sent. The drop happened. The damage is real. Anyone who took part in this needs to be held to account. If we let them quietly rewrite what they said and did, the same thing will happen again the next time a new set of rules decides certain truths are no longer allowed. The rapid-onset dementia currently afflicting Midnight Mango doesn’t rewrite the record, it only proves how quickly the ideology evaporates the moment the political wind changes.

Subscribe now

Buy Me A Coffee

Midnight Mango: Hypocrites of the Year

They cancelled me for saying a woman is an adult human female. women,” that they’re not neutral, and if I kept saying women are adult human females it would only further damage my musical career. They went and wrote a whole Gender Diversity Manifesto, set up a steering group and made it crystal clear that anyone who refused to fall into line simply wasn’t welcome. That’s enforcing a rigid political line and actively punishing artists who won’t recite their script.

The Supreme Court ruled that sex under the Equality Act means biological sex, and woman means adult human female. What they cancelled me for is the law of the land. If I wasn’t already up to my neck in lawfare, I’d have sued them into the ground without a second thought.

They were perfectly fine with cancelling people when it suited their interests and their ideology. Now that similar pressure is falling on their own artists, suddenly it’s all “pressure from UK Lawyers for Israel” and how terrible cancel culture is. They showed zero hesitation joining the pile-on when the target was me. They had no difficulty making an example of a working musician who refused to adopt the required mantra, and then watching her lose the ability to earn a living on stage.

Don’t rewrite history now. Own what you did!!

I said a basic, material truth that millions of ordinary people understand and that the highest court in the country has now confirmed. For that simple act I was threatened, dropped, lied about in the press, and effectively shut out of the live circuit that had previously kept me going. The damage didn’t end when the emails stopped. Venues still refuse to book me. The shows dried up. The income from performing live disappeared. A second album that should have got proper support was left without it. That is the real and lasting cost of their manifesto and their non-negotiable company line: I lost my livelihood.

If Midnight Mango want to lecture anyone about the dangers of cancel culture, coordinated pressure campaigns, or artists being punished for holding the wrong views, they can start by acknowledging what they themselves did in 2023. Large parts of the music industry, especially the alternative and independent ends of it, have stopped being about music. They’re a Lord of the Flies island run on woke purity tests, cancel campaigns, and the constant hunt for the next beast. The songs, the stages, the actual graft of writing and playing and connecting with people have been shoved aside while everyone paints their faces and chases whatever the current orthodoxy demands this week.

I reckon Lord of the Flies still explains it better than most of that intellectual slaggery they dress up as analysis. Boys land on an island with no adults. At first they try to keep some order. They elect a leader, they pass a conch so people can speak in turn, they talk about keeping the fire going so they might get rescued. Then fear arrives. A beast is invented. The fear of the beast becomes more important than whether the beast is even real. Faces get painted. The choirboys turn into hunters. The conch gets ignored, then smashed. Anyone who questions the hunt gets isolated and treated like they’re part of the threat themselves. By the end the island runs on pure tribal logic and bloodlust, and the original point of being there - survival, rescue, building something that might last - has been completely forgotten.

That’s the music industry now. The conch was free speech, open argument, the simple idea that the work itself could stand or fall on its own merits. It’s been thrown into the undergrowth. In its place is a system where the most important activity is identifying the latest beast, circulating the warnings, pressuring venues and platforms to cut them off, and making bloody well sure everyone else joins the hunt or keeps their mouth shut. The language is always about safety, inclusion, community standards, being on the right side of history. The practical result is that music itself becomes secondary. What matters is whether you’ve painted your face the correct colour this month and whether you’re willing to pass along the next tip-off about someone who’s stepped outside the ever-shifting lines.

I’ve watched this happen across the alternative and independent scenes for years, and it never gets any less ugly.

An artist says something that doesn’t fit the current script, or is simply accused of it with enough confidence and volume, and the machinery starts turning. Sometimes it begins in private Discord servers, Signal groups or locked Instagram stories. The claims are dressed up serious enough to make people feel they have a moral duty to listen - dangerous, harmful, problematic, a threat to the community. Evidence that can be openly checked is almost never required. Secrecy about the source is treated like some sacred duty. Questioning any of it marks you out as part of the problem.

Other times the attack is launched fully public. Long threads that start with “I need to speak my truth.” Open letters signed by dozens of people who’ve never even met the accused. Carefully worded statements from mutual friends that never quite name the actual offence but still make the person radioactive overnight. Old screenshots, half-remembered conversations, second-hand stories get treated as solid fact. Context is stripped away. Timelines get compressed. Any attempt by the accused to reply is immediately labelled further harm or gaslighting. The pile-on gathers speed and nobody wants to be the one left behind.

Before long the same story is being repeated across every platform as settled fact. Venues start getting quiet warnings or concerned emails urging them to drop the artist “for the safety of the community.” Promoters are told booking them will mean boycotts and bad press. Collaborators are advised that sticking with the target will damage their own standing. Platforms remove content or whole accounts with barely any explanation. Confirmed shows evaporate one after another. Playlist curators and journalists simply stop answering emails. The target is left isolated and professionally diminished while the hunters congratulate themselves on having protected the island again. The music that person was making, the tours they’d spent months grafting on, the real connection they had with audiences who actually showed up - all of it becomes irrelevant next to the need to keep the hunt going and the faces properly painted.

That is the part that still cuts deepest. The isolation is not an accident. It is the point. As long as no one speaks to the person at the centre of the storm, the storm never has to answer to reality. The people spreading the story get to feel righteous and protective. The person being smeared gets left standing in the wreckage with no clear way to reach the people who once trusted them. That’s how the whole thing keeps working.

What makes it so hollow is how little of it has anything to do with the actual work. The industry still bangs on in press releases and panel discussions about supporting artists, nurturing scenes and platforming new voices. In practice it spends far more energy on ideological enforcement than on the music those voices actually make. Playlists, line-ups, press coverage and even basic professional relationships get filtered through a constantly shifting set of purity requirements. Younger musicians learn the lesson fast and hard: the safest way to survive is not to write better songs or play better shows, but to stay quiet, signal correctly, and be ready to join the next cancellation campaign the second it arrives. The old idea that a scene could argue fiercely and still share stages has been replaced by a culture where disagreement itself is treated as contamination. Once someone has been named as the beast, the only acceptable response is total distance.

I’ve seen too many people lose years of work, lose stages they’d earned through pure graft, lose the ordinary chance to be heard by audiences who wanted to hear them, simply because the hunt became more important than the music. I’ve felt the ground shrink under my own feet when I’ve been labelled the beast that week, when the warnings started moving and the tour dates began to vanish one by one. I’m still standing in the wreckage. It’s going to take a long time to pick up the pieces and get back on my feet again. But I’m still writing, still playing, still refusing to accept that this feverish, tribal, face-painted performance is all the industry has left to offer.

The music industry doesn’t have to stay stranded on that island. It could pick the conch back up if enough people insisted. It could remember that the point was supposed to be the songs, the stages, and the messy human connection between people who make things and people who listen.

Refusing to do the work of the painted faces looks like this in practice: answering the private warning by actually going and speaking to the person being accused instead of just swallowing the story; keeping someone on a bill when the only evidence against them is a circulating narrative with no open examination; refusing to share the call-out post or sign the open letter just to prove you’re on the correct side; booking the show because the songs are good, not because the artist holds the right opinions this month; treating disagreement as something you can still share a stage with instead of contamination. None of that recovery starts while the main activity remains the hunt.

Large parts of the industry have become thoroughly woke, thoroughly tribal, and thoroughly distracted from music. The only way any of it gets honest again is if enough of us simply refuse to keep doing the work of the painted faces.

Subscribe now

Buy Me A Coffee

The "Love Her or Hate Her" Cowards: Ann Widdecombe’s Murder Exposes Our Gutless, Spineless Culture

The news of Ann Widdecombe’s murder has been weighing on me like a cold stone right in the middle of my chest these past few days.

Louise Distras

The news of Ann Widdecombe’s murder has been weighing on me like a cold stone right in the middle of my chest these past few days. It’s heavy and impossible to ignore no matter how much I try to turn my thoughts elsewhere. An elderly woman attacked in her own home out on the edge of Dartmoor, left with serious injuries and found dead in the one place she should have been completely safe, and it feels like yet another ugly reminder of how vicious things have turned when someone spends their life refusing to water down what they believe. Yet even in the shock of it all, and even as tributes have come in from different directions, that same pathetic little dance has already started up again across so many of the responses, the careful disclaimers and the gutless hedging that people hide behind before they’ll risk saying anything honest about what has actually been lost.

I see the same tired phrases popping up everywhere: “Love her or hate her…” or “I didn’t agree with everything she said, but…” or the quick way they slap on labels like “controversial” and “divisive” or “whatever one thinks of her views” and “no fan of hers, however” and “while I may not have always seen eye to eye.” All those little verbal shields get thrown up first, as if the violent death of a woman who never once reached for that kind of protection somehow requires everyone else to prove they were keeping their distance all along. It makes me angry because I know only too well what it costs to refuse those buffers.

I’ve lived through the deplatforming, the agents dropping me, the platforms deciding my music and my plain words were suddenly too dangerous because I wouldn’t lie about basic reality. I said a woman is an adult human female and the machinery came for me, not because I was hateful but because I refused to bend or lie to fit the moment. So when I watch the same cowardly pattern repeat around Ann’s murder, with people rushing to insert distance before they can even acknowledge the loss of someone who stood firm without apology, it hits like another betrayal of everything she represented. This is the gutless, spineless culture we’ve allowed to take root, where fear of the mob matters more than speaking plainly, and where the first instinct is always to cover your own arse instead of facing what has happened.

She never did any of that. Ann Widdecombe said what she believed in Parliament and on television and in print for decades, and she accepted that not everyone would like it or agree with it, but she carried on anyway without the preemptive disclaimers or the careful rewriting of her own record the moment the wind changed. That straight-talking refusal to hedge is exactly what made her stand out in these times when so many others treat their principles like cheap outfits they can swap the second it starts to feel uncomfortable or costly. Hearing about her murder keeps pulling me back to that difference because here was someone who lived without the constant performance of safe distance that now colours almost everything we read or hear, and the contrast feels even sharper against the violence that took her from us.

It leaves me exhausted and angry just watching how quickly it happens, because when something as violent and final as this murder comes along the decent and human response would be to say outright that the violent killing of a woman who refused to apologise for what she stood for is an outrage, full stop. Instead the little rituals take over, the preemptive distancing and the quick labels that let people sound reasonable while still protecting themselves. It drains the honesty and the weight out of every exchange, turning real talk into something provisional and weak and always ready to be walked back if the crowd turns nasty. And over time it teaches everyone that holding any real conviction, especially when it goes against the loudest voices, is simply too risky or too expensive, so the safer path is always to hedge and qualify and keep one foot out the door in case you need to step away fast. This is our gutless, spineless culture exposed in the worst possible light.

I’ve carried that same pressure in my own work and my own fights, the betrayal when spaces that should have been open to independent voices suddenly slammed shut because you wouldn’t conform, the lost earnings and slammed doors and the legal battles that followed when you simply wouldn’t soften the truth to stay liked or bookable. What kept me moving forward through all of it was that same stubborn refusal to water down what I knew was right, and I’ve never reached for those buffers, not once, because I know they only feed the problem. Ann Widdecombe lived that same refusal on a much bigger stage and for far longer than most. She didn’t need the disclaimers because she had already accepted the consequences that came with her words, and that’s what real integrity actually looks like when it gets tested in the fire, not this endless careful dancing that protects your own options while the whole culture around us grows narrower and colder and more afraid.

Her murder has shaken a lot of people, and it should, because when a public figure and former minister can be attacked like that in her own home it forces you to wonder about the safety of anyone who still dares to speak their mind without apology. Yet even in the middle of the horror that old instinct to qualify creeps back in for so many others, as if they’ve trained themselves so thoroughly to guard their own skin first that they can’t even face the loss without slipping in a little insurance policy. It says everything about how broken and fearful things have become, and it shows how deeply they’ve swallowed the rules that make hedging feel normal while anyone who refuses to join in starts to look like the odd one out.

I keep turning it over in my mind what it would actually look like if more of them responded to something like this without falling back on all those tired buffers. To say straight and clear that a woman who stood by what she believed, even when it made her unpopular or costly, did not deserve to have her life ended in violence in her own home. To recognise that her long years of plain speaking were rare and brave and worth remembering without first rushing to prove you were never really aligned with her. That kind of directness used to feel ordinary, the normal way people could disagree or show respect without needing to purify themselves in public first, but now it can come across as almost reckless in a world that rewards the constant careful recalibration instead. Ann Widdecombe never lived scanning the room for the safest opinion or the next shift in approval. She said what she thought needed saying and she took what came with it, and that approach stands in complete opposition to the spineless shifting and hedging that has taken over so much of life these days.

The shock of her murder will start to fade for most people as these things tend to do, and the tributes will settle into the usual patterns we’ve all seen before. But for those of us who have tasted what it means to be targeted simply for refusing to lie or bend, the difference between her way of living and this fearful, qualified one stays sharp and painful in the memory. She never needed those little verbal shields because she had already chosen to stand without them. In doing that she showed what it still looks like when someone decides their principles aren’t for sale and their words aren’t something to be endlessly rewritten for comfort. That kind of courage feels rarer with every passing year. Its violent end is a loss that deserves to be met with plain honest words, with no buffers, no distance, and no performance. We owe her at least that much, and if we’re honest with ourselves we owe it to our own future selves to keep choosing the same unapologetic path she walked, no matter how much it costs.

Subscribe now

Buy Me A Coffee

12 Hours of A&E Hell

The Britain We No Longer Recognise

Louise Distras

I still can’t quite believe I’m sitting here with my body aching all over and my head full of everything I saw and felt during those long awful hours I spent trapped in A&E last Wednesday night. It was the kind of night that leaves you wondering how things have come to this in the country I grew up believing would always look after its own when people hit rock bottom. Before 2023 my life was all about the road and the stage. I spent years singing and performing for well over an hour a night, night after night, for weeks and months on end, travelling all over the world, lugging heavy gear from one venue to the next, carrying guitar amps up steep flights of stairs in dodgy clubs and loading vans in pouring rain at stupid o’clock in the morning. Through all of it I was healthy and strong, full of energy, the sort of person who could push through jet lag and long drives and still step out under the lights and give everything I had to the people who had come to hear me sing. I had been working since I was fifteen years old, holding down a part time job in the evenings and at weekends while I was still at school, doing whatever shifts I could get because that’s just what you did. You put the hours in and you earned your way without expecting anything handed to you on a plate. That work ethic carried on into my adult life and into the touring, where I was always hustling and grafting to make it all happen, and it makes what I’m going through now feel even more unfair somehow, like the system I’ve contributed to my whole life has turned its back on people like me who have always tried to do the right thing.

Then came December 2023 and the arrest that turned my world upside down, followed by the nightmare of court cases that seemed to go on forever. Each one chipped away at whatever strength I had left until my body started paying the price in ways I could never have prepared for. The constant stress, the never ending fight or flight feeling, the sleepless nights filled with worry all sank deep into me, turning into this chronic pain that burns and stabs and refuses to let go. It’s a daily reminder that trauma doesn’t just stay in your head but works its way into every nerve and muscle until you’re not the same person anymore. I’ve been back and forth to the doctors more times than I can count, sitting in those little rooms trying to explain the burning down my spine and the way my whole body seems to fire off for no reason. I’ve dragged myself to physio week after week hoping each session would finally loosen something, but it never really does, and I end up right back where I started, still carrying the weight. For the past week I’ve been completely bedridden with it, barely able to get up, forced to take yet more time off work because there’s simply no way I can stand, let alone function like a normal person. In the end I had no choice but to go to A&E.

The place was grim beyond words. I found myself stuck in unforgiving metal chairs that dug into my already screaming spine in a stinking waiting room that felt more like a third world scene than anything you would expect in Britain. It was full of piss and vomit and the heavy weight of pure despair hanging in the air, with people slumped on filthy floors because there were not enough seats. The corridors were so overcrowded you could hardly move without stepping over someone. Elderly patients sat grey faced and barely holding on, drunks screamed and swung at exhausted staff who looked like they’d not slept properly in days, and others collapsed right there in front of everyone while IV lines dangled uselessly from the walls. It was chaos and neglect all rolled into one, the kind of thing that makes your stomach turn while you’re sitting there in your own agony, watching it all unfold hour after hour with no real end in sight. I waited more than twelve long hours before I was finally seen, every minute feeling heavier than the last as the pain kept building and no one seemed able to do much about it. All around me it was the same story of ordinary people being left to fend for themselves in conditions that should never be allowed in a civilised country.

When a female doctor finally came over she was kind enough. You could see she was doing her best in impossible conditions, but her voice carried that deep tiredness of someone who has delivered the same bad news too many times. She talked about admitting me and getting me a proper bed, but then she told me straight that even if they decided to keep me in, I’d be looking at least another twenty four hours, maybe more, before anything became available. Twenty four hours. I just sat there nodding like it made sense while inside I felt something crack wide open. This was not proper care. This was good people being left to suffer like forgotten souls in hallways with no dignity and no real help. It was the NHS I grew up believing in crumbling right in front of my eyes while the whole place felt like it was running on empty.

I kept thinking about my family and what they went through to be here. My dad’s side came from Cyprus in the sixties, fleeing the war, and they never claimed a penny in benefits. They all absolutely worked their arses off, grafting in whatever jobs they could find, building lives for themselves and their children, and they love and respect the UK with everything they have because they knew what it stood for and what it gave them after everything they’d escaped. My grandad on the other side fought in World War Two and was a Japanese prisoner of war, and my mum, a single parent, worked incredibly hard in the NHS for most of her working life, giving everything she had to that same system. She would come home sometimes and tell me about all the money she saw getting wasted and the inefficiencies that drove her mad. I’d never seen her so fired up as when she talked about it. She felt really strongly because she poured so much of herself into that job and hated seeing it let people down when it was supposed to be there for everyone. They all carried that quiet pride in what this country had built, a proper health service there for ordinary people when they needed it, paid for week after week by people doing their bit without complaint. My parents worked hard, they served when they were called, and they trusted that the system would be there if illness or injury ever struck. What would they make of the mess I saw last night, I kept wondering, as I sat among the slumped figures and listened to another outburst from someone clearly broken by whatever had brought them through the doors.

And don’t even get me started on the pride flags flying outside the hospital, as if that’s somehow the priority when people are lying in corridors in agony and the whole place is falling apart at the seams. The NHS has its priorities all wrong these days, pouring time and money and energy into things that have nothing to do with actual healthcare while the basics are being ignored. That’s before you even mention illegal immigration and how the system is being drained by people who shouldn’t even be here in the first place, adding extra pressure to an already overloaded service that was never designed to cope with this level of demand. It feels like everything my family worked for and believed in is being eroded from the inside, with resources stretched thinner and thinner while ordinary British people who have paid in all their lives, or whose families came here legally and grafted hard, are the ones left waiting and suffering. The whole night was just endless waiting and watching. It took five hours before anyone even offered me any pain relief, and when it finally came it barely touched the edges of what I was feeling, so I had to keep asking, trying to stay polite even though the desperation was creeping in because you don’t want to be the difficult one in a place already stretched to breaking point.

All around me it was the same story playing out. People were waiting, hoping, slowly losing hope as the realisation sank in that tonight was not going to bring any real answers or relief. I saw mums rocking feverish babies, old people just trying to hold on with whatever dignity they had left. Good people who had paid into this system their whole lives were reduced to metal chairs and dirty floors with nothing but faint hope left.

The contrast with my old life hits me harder than anything. I used to be that woman out on the road, touring the world, performing night after night, full of life and strength no matter what, someone who had grafted since she was fifteen and kept grafting through the years of touring and travelling. Now I’m the one who can barely get through a week without being flattened by this pain, having to beg for basic help in the country my family helped build and defend, watching a system that should be there for us all slowly collapse under the weight of wrong priorities and endless strain from every direction.

I finally got home in the early hours, still in pain, still not properly sorted, the whole experience sitting heavy on my chest like a weight I cannot shake off. This is not the Britain we built. Once the envy of the world, and now it leaves people suffering like this with no proper care, no dignity, and no sense that anyone at the top really cares about fixing the basics anymore. I just needed to get it all out, to put it down in words and let off some of the steam that has been building up inside me after everything that has happened, the pain, the waiting, the memories of what used to be, and the frustration of seeing it all go wrong when so many of us have given so much. Heartbroken doesn’t even come close.

Subscribe now

Buy Me A Coffee

I’ve Escalated My Complaint Against West Yorkshire Police to the IOPC

They still won’t admit they were wrong

Louise Distras

Hi everyone,

I’ve received West Yorkshire Police’s response to my formal complaint and I’m deeply disappointed. It barely scratches the surface of my concerns and I feel that the system has failed me again.

For the full background, read my earlier post here: This week I submitted my formal complaint.

Last year I was charged with harassment over my speech at the Let Women Speak event in Leeds in November 2023. That speech focused on women’s rights, free speech, and my own experiences of cancellation in the music industry after I spoke out in defence of biological reality and the importance of single sex spaces. This came after an earlier decision of no further action. In Crown Court last December, the CPS stood up and openly admitted they had no evidence whatsoever, and the case collapsed before it even reached trial. Yet I feel that West Yorkshire Police have completely failed to examine or take any responsibility for these disgraceful failings and their obvious overreach.

My reports of stalking and threats were ignored, while counter-complaints focused on my gender critical sex realist views were pursued aggressively. The police have given me the usual brush-off “we were just doing our job” plus their generic “sorry for any confusion, inconvenience or distress this incident has caused” nonsense. As if being arrested, having my personal data leaked, and dragged through court with zero evidence was just a minor hiccup.

I believe this is textbook two-tier policing. In 2026 Britain you’re more likely to be arrested for speaking about being stalked than for actually being the stalker. It’s not good enough. I’ve now escalated this to the IOPC and hope the review brings some real answers and accountability.

Thankyou to everyone who has stuck with me and sent such kind messages. It really does make a difference knowing I’m not alone in this. We all deserve a police force and a justice system that treats people fairly, regardless of the views they hold, and I’ll keep fighting for that in whatever way I can.

Louise XX

Subscribe now

Buy Me A Coffee

Why Pride Makes Me Vom

Pride has turned into a complete and utter disgrace, and I’m not the only one who feels this way.

Louise Distras

Pride has turned into a complete and utter disgrace, and I’m not the only one who feels this way. What started out as gay men, lesbians and bisexuals finally getting to celebrate the right to love who they love without shame or outside interference has been thoroughly hijacked, twisted into something grotesque and unrecognisable, and turned into this month long corporate freak show of delusion, public perversion, and straight-up child endangerment. I genuinely can’t stand the sight of it.

Back in 2014 I played the women’s stage at Manchester Pride, and that day is still burned into my memory for all the right reasons. The crowds were packed with actual gay men, lesbians and bi people who were there to dance, laugh, and enjoy themselves properly. It felt real and honest because these were people who had fought hard for years just to be left alone to live their lives openly. There were no kids being shoved into the middle of everything, and no men in drag demanding access to women’s private spaces while calling any woman who pointed out basic biology a bigot. It was simply about adults minding their own business and finally breathing freely after decades of pressure and persecution.

That version of Pride is long dead.

What we’re left with now is a full scale war on reality itself. The original meaning of same-sex attraction has been bulldozed by the TQ+ cult. They’ve forcibly glued transgender ideology onto homosexuality. Two things with nothing in common. They have turned the whole movement into complete chaos. Grown men in cheap wigs and lingerie now storm women’s toilets, changing rooms, sports teams and prisons, while any woman who objects is branded a hateful bigot. Lesbians are bullied as “genital fascists” for refusing “lady dick,” and gay men are shamed for not wanting women in their spaces.

This modern Pride is now viciously homophobic against actual gay men and lesbians. It has hijacked their movement and weaponised it against them. By replacing same-sex attraction with the lie of “same-gender attraction,” it erases the biological foundation that makes homosexuality possible at all. The ideology demands homosexuals lie about their own sexuality and brands anyone who tells the truth as the real villain. What began as a fight against homophobia has become its nastiest new form. It polices same-sex attraction while celebrating those who colonise and destroy gay and lesbian spaces.

Even worse, they’ve dragged children right into the centre of this mess. Drag queens are reading stories to toddlers, half-naked fetish freaks are twerking in front of kids with “Kink at Pride” banners flying proudly overhead, and schools are spending the entire month of June indoctrinating children that their healthy young bodies are somehow wrong or optional. Kids are being told they can simply “identify” as the opposite sex and that pumping them full of blockers and cross-sex hormones is compassionate care. This isn’t progress or kindness. It’s adults sacrificing children’s bodies and futures on the altar of their own delusions and fetishes, and it makes me so angry.

Most gay, lesbian and bisexual people I know want absolutely nothing to do with any of this crap. Not a single one of them ever asked for their orientation to be chained to this rolling circus of mental illness, perversion and medical abuse. They simply want to love who they love and be left the hell alone, instead of being turned into human shields for an ideology that erases what being gay or lesbian even means in the first place.

The corporate rainbow vomit is perhaps the most pathetic part of the whole spectacle. Every single June, banks, breweries, supermarkets, football teams and even arms dealers plaster themselves in rainbows and spew out those cringy “Happy Pride” messages as if they actually give a damn. These are the same greedy companies happily raking in cash in countries where they still hang gays or throw them off roofs. It’s not genuine support. It’s cheap virtue signalling designed to protect their image and sell more crap, while ordinary gay, lesbian and bisexual people get lumped in with all the madness whether they like it or not.

I’m a woman who still believes in cold, hard material reality. Adult human females are women, full stop. Biological sex is binary. Male or female. No amount of surgery, makeup, hormones or wishful thinking will ever change that fundamental truth. Same-sex attraction only exists as a meaningful category because sex is real and immutable. When you erase sex, you erase the entire foundation of being gay or lesbian. That’s exactly what this ideology does. It doesn’t expand anyone’s rights, it destroys them.

This whole takeover has caused massive damage to actual gay and lesbian people. Their hard-won spaces are being invaded, their language is being stolen and twisted, and their orientation is being diluted into meaningless “queer” nonsense. The general public now associates homosexuality with all this mental illness and extremism, which only makes normal, everyday life harder for ordinary same-sex attracted people just trying to get on with things.

This year as rainbow flags smother every high street and public building, I’m not playing along. The spirit I felt on that Manchester stage back in 2014 has been replaced by authoritarian lies, public degeneracy and child abuse dressed up as some kind of celebration.

Pride as it exists today isn’t worth defending. It deserves to be called out for exactly what it is, and it deserves nothing but contempt.

Subscribe now

Buy Me A Coffee

“Online Paranoia??" He wrote: “When your career ended due to online paranoia. I remember you before what the fuck you have become now. So sad.” He even repeated the “so sad” bit, like he was really trying to drive the point home. It’s the kind of message that looks like concern on the surface but lands like a flat-out gutless dismissal of everything that has actually happened.

The gaslighting in it is absolutely outrageous. What he's calling “online paranoia” is actually a string of very real, very frightening events that went way beyond the internet. Trans activists tracked down my private home address. They showed up at my door to threaten and intimidate me, loitered around my property, and hassled my neighbours with intrusive questions about my personal life. On another occasion, someone tried to break in while I was inside. I was on the phone to 999, and the operator told me to barricade the door with my sofa. After all that, they reported me to the police for talking about what they had done. And somehow, in this guy’s version of events, the whole thing gets reduced to me being paranoid and having changed beyond recognition.

That is what gets me the most about this whole situation: the blatant, shameless two-tier system that runs right through it. The people who do the doxxing, the threats, the doorstep visits, and the attempted break-ins don’t seem to face any real consequences. But the minute a woman like me notices the pattern, speaks about it publicly, and refuses to stay quiet, the system suddenly finds all the energy in the world. They arrest you, drag you into the courts, put you through the stress, the expense, and the public scrutiny all because discussing what the perpetrators actually did is apparently enough to make them feel “harassed.”

And it’s not just the fruitcakes turning up on your doorstep. The real institutional failure is that the authorities, the police, the CPS, and the courts too often side with the perpetrators and punish the victims for noticing. They treat women stating biological reality as the greater threat. After months of hell, the CPS often drops the charges and admits they never really had evidence in the first place. This isn’t incompetence it’s a pattern of choosing ideology over justice, feelings over facts, and activists over ordinary citizens trying to live safely in their own homes.

I don’t usually bother replying to comments like this on social media because there's rarely any point when someone has already made up their mind. But every now and then a comment is so ridiculous, so dripping with gaslighting and victim-blaming, that it deserves to be put on blast. This is one of those times.

I remember who I was before all of this too. I was just a woman going about my life saying what I thought was obvious: that sex is real, that it matters, and that women’s rights and safety should not be sacrificed on the altar of someone else’s mental illness and all this DEI nonsense being shoved down everyone’s throats. None of that made me hateful or extreme. It made me someone who noticed what was going on and refused to pretend otherwise. I had finally released my second album after the lockdowns and was genuinely happy and excited about getting back to my music, the road, the shows, and a fresh start. That was the plan. That was the version of me you claim to remember.

And the truth is this is not just my story. It's happening to so many other women and men right now. You see the same pattern again and again: a mother who speaks up about her daughter’s school gets doxxed; a nurse raising concerns about single-sex spaces finds activists at her work; a dad questioning medical transition faces threats and police visits while the activists walk free. Teachers, doctors, athletes, parents, writers, young people, ordinary people who refuse to pretend feelings override facts, that mental illness should rewrite biological reality, or that DEI checklists matter more than truth and safety. They get the online pile-ons, the real-world intimidation, and the selective enforcement. Women lose jobs, friends, and safety in their own homes. Men who stand with them get labelled bigots. All because they won’t stay silent about our daughters’ sports, our sisters’ hospital wards, our children’s schools, and our basic right to speak without fear of a mob at the door.

So thanks for the reminder, random guy in my comments section even if it wasn’t the one you meant to give. This is exactly why we keep speaking. The pattern is clear, the evidence is there for anyone willing to look, and women and the men who support them aren't going to be bullied into silence.

We all deserve better. We deserve institutions that protect victims instead of shielding perpetrators. We deserve a society that values truth, safety, and fairness over ideology. We deserve to live without fear that noticing biological reality will cost us our careers, our peace, or our security. The gaslighting stops when enough of us refuse to play along. We're still here. The deplatforming, the relentless smearing, and the systematic blacklisting that I endured in my music career felt like absolute hell while it was happening, with gigs being cancelled overnight without any explanation, old friends and colleagues suddenly ghosting me as if I'd become radioactive, and every door that had once been open to me slamming shut in my face so violently that it genuinely felt as though my entire life and identity as an artist were being torched right before my eyes. But now, when I look back on that period with the clearer perspective that only time and far worse experiences can bring, I realise it was nothing more than child’s play, a pathetic warmup act that barely registers anymore compared to the institutional betrayal I witnessed and lived through at the hands of West Yorkshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service.

This was never some petty cultural argument fought out among a handful of online trolls or disgruntled music industry insiders. This was the full weight of the state machinery, the actual apparatus of government that we are constantly told exists solely to protect ordinary citizens like me and everyone else. Once you've seen with your own eyes how that machinery really operates behind the scenes, how it prioritises ideology over evidence and narrative over truth, you simply cannot pretend any more, and no matter how hard you try, you can't unsee the ugly reality of it all.

Two-tier policing is not some fringe conspiracy theory dreamed up in the darker corners of the internet... it's blatant, it's systematic, and it's staring every single one of us in the face if we are willing to look honestly at what is happening. Any complaint that comes wrapped in the language of woke ideology is fast-tracked through the system as though it were the single most sacred and urgent priority in the entire country, handled with the softest kid gloves imaginable, rushed through at breakneck speed, and elevated to a status that makes it practically untouchable by any form of scrutiny or challenge. If you so much as question it, you're immediately branded as the enemy of everything decent and progressive. Yet if you dare to raise legitimate, evidence based concerns about women’s rights, about the importance of single-sex spaces, about biological reality, or about the urgent need to keep girls and women safe from predators in a world that increasingly refuses to acknowledge basic facts, then from day one you are cast as the villain in the story. You receive no fair hearing, no genuine investigation rooted in facts, only silence, smears, and often active targeting designed to shut you down and make an example of you. It's never truly about the evidence in these cases it's only ever about fiercely protecting the approved narrative at all costs.

This is precisely the same cancerous DEI rot that allowed grooming gangs to rape and destroy the lives of thousands upon thousands of vulnerable girls right across the country for years on end without any meaningful intervention. The authorities had the reports, they possessed the evidence, and they knew full well what was taking place in towns and cities up and down Britain, yet they were so utterly terrified of being labelled racist or of damaging so-called community relations that they deliberately chose to look the other way, burying reports, dismissing victims who came forward, and disbelieving those who had suffered the most horrific abuse imaginable. Police forces and social services made the cold calculation that their own careers and the maintenance of the precious public image around multiculturalism were far more important than stopping the systematic rape and trafficking of children on an industrial scale. That level of institutional betrayal should disgust every decent person who still tries to defend this broken system as though it were merely suffering from a few isolated mistakes rather than a deep, structural moral failure.

And the same vile pattern continues to be exposed again and again in cases such as Henry Nowak and the seemingly endless string of similar scandals that keep surfacing despite the best efforts of the authorities to keep them quiet. Time after time the system demonstrates beyond any doubt that it values the official, politically convenient story far more than it values truth, hard evidence, or the suffering of real victims. When the “wrong” person ends up as the victim, or when the perpetrator happens to belong to one of the protected groups in the current hierarchy of sacred identities, justice does not merely bend under pressure it snaps, twists, and vanishes completely, leaving ordinary people to wonder what on earth happened to the rule of law they thought they could rely upon.

I will never be able to unsee the sheer horror of what I experienced during my own ordeal. Here is a system that we as taxpayers fund with our hard-earned money, a system we are constantly reassured exists to serve and protect the public from harm, yet in reality it actively shields criminals whenever doing so fits the prevailing political agenda of the day and viciously punishes anyone brave enough to speak up for reason, for facts, or for the basic safety of women and girls who deserve protection in their own country. The police are no longer truly in the business of protecting the public in any impartial or consistent way, too many within the institution have transformed themselves into ideological enforcers first and law enforcers only when it suits the narrative they've been told to uphold.

This state of affairs can't be allowed to continue if we are to have any hope of salvaging what remains of public trust and social cohesion. That trust has already been obliterated, and rightly so, because the betrayal runs so deep and has been repeated so often. People from every walk of life, whether they lean left, right, or stand somewhere in the messy middle, desperately need to open their eyes to this reality and call it by its true name: a complete and utter betrayal of the British people by the very institutions that are supposed to serve them.

Enough is enough. We have to push back harder than we ever have before, refusing to accept the excuses and the deflections any longer. We must demand real accountability from those in power, full transparency on every single charging decision that is made, and an ironclad commitment that the law will be applied equally and without fear or favour, regardless of whose sacred feelings might be bruised in the process. We need an immediate and decisive end to the politicisation and corruption that have eaten away at the heart of policing. Our daughters, our communities, and everything we hold dear in this country depend on it.

If the state now refuses to protect us in any consistent or honest way, then we can no longer pretend that it's on our side or that it deserves our unquestioning loyalty. The time for polite complaints and quiet hope has passed, we have to fight this battle ourselves if we want any chance of restoring the justice and fairness that have been stolen from us.

Subscribe now

If this resonates, you can support my work and help me keep going by buying me a coffee here:

Buy Me A Coffee

Why Society Kills Its Artists

I’ve been thinking for a while that I finally want to get this down properly.

Louise Distras

I’ve been thinking for a while that I finally want to get this down properly. It’s about the way society kills its artists, not always with the dramatic stories you see in films, but quietly and systematically by devaluing the very things that make us able to create real art in the first place. I’m talking about the emotional sensitivity, the intuition, the vulnerability, the deep flow of feelings that lets us turn pain into music or words or whatever it is we do. I came across some words from Jeff Buckley in a candid 1994 interview he did with Canada’s MuchMusic network and they stopped me in my tracks because they describe exactly the quiet violence I’ve lived through in my own life and career.

Jeff Buckley said that we live in a culture that kills artists. It wants them to die. It wants them to make the sacrifice. He talked about how society pushes everyone to be practical and cold and factual, while actively devaluing anyone who dares to speak poetically or express deep feelings in public. The foundation of real art, he said, is the flow, the understanding, the intuition, not the hard facts and the commercial grind. But that intuitive, vulnerable space, the seat of all artistic expression, gets treated like the cabin slave of the world. It’s exploited for its emotional labour, it’s romanticised when it produces the pain that sells records or gets clicks, but it’s punished and devalued the moment it steps out of line or refuses to keep sacrificing everything. He linked it to the way femininity and empathy get treated as weakness in a hyper-commercial world that penalises poetic expression and forces artists into impossible choices just to survive. Those words hit me hard because I’ve felt every bit of that.

Look at how it actually plays out. Most of us who end up making music that actually connects with people don’t come from comfortable, stable backgrounds where everything was handed to us on a plate. We come from messy, dysfunctional, and traumatic places that leave you wounded and open and carrying things that most people don’t have to carry. That sensitivity and vulnerability isn’t a flaw; it’s the exact thing that lets us write songs that cut through the noise and make people feel less alone. It’s the turning of sharp pain into something beautiful that others can hear and recognise themselves in. But society and the music industry don’t value that openness. They smell it a mile off and they use it against you. They offer the promises of bigger things, because they know you will pour everything into the music. Then the control starts. The album files get held hostage after a crowdfunder. The money is stolen. The coercion turns darker. The assault happens. And when you finally get away and try to release the work on your own terms, the rumours fly around the industry that you’re the unreliable one, the difficult one, the problem. All of it because you dared to keep hold of your own emotional truth instead of handing it over completely.

That’s exactly what Jeff Buckley was pointing at. A culture that wants artists to make the sacrifice, to keep giving their sensitivity and their intuition and their vulnerability for the entertainment and profit of others, but never to use that same voice to challenge anything real or to protect themselves or to speak plainly about the things that actually matter. And this is where it gets even darker now because the music scene itself has turned into something that has nothing to do with creativity and everything to do with political and ideological conformity. It used to be that punk and rock and real music were about saying what you actually feel and telling the truth even when it was uncomfortable. Now large parts of it demand you sign up to the current ideology or you’re out. You have to affirm the “correct beliefs” on everything, or they will drop you, deplatform you, smear you. It’s not about the quality of the songs or the imperfect honesty in your voice anymore. It’s about whether you will nod along and keep quiet on the things that matter.

I found that out the hard way in May 2023. I did a straightforward interview and simply said what any normal person knows deep down: sex is real, it is immutable, trans women are not women, and women’s spaces and girls’ safeguarding actually matter. I wasn’t being hateful. I was refusing the compelled speech and the lie. Within weeks my booking agent dropped me because their company position was the opposite. Gigs vanished. Platforms deplatformed me. Then came the stalking, the doxxing, the rape and death threats. I went on GB News to talk about it and two weeks later the police turned up at my door while I was fresh out the shower in nothing but a towel, arrested me, hauled me in for seven hours of custody with mugshots, fingerprints and DNA swabs, and dragged me through court until the case collapsed with no evidence in December 2025. All of it because I wouldn’t sacrifice my own truth to fit the new rules.

That’s the cabin slave in action. They want the emotional flow when it makes them money or looks good, but the second that same intuition and honesty leads you to say something that doesn’t match the prevailing narrative, they punish you hard. The music industry has become one of the worst enforcers of ideological conformity. Creativity is dead in those circles. It’s all about loyalty tests and making sure every artist stays in their lane. Real art that comes from the vulnerable place Jeff Buckley defended, gets killed off because it might say the wrong thing. And working-class artists like me, the ones who have already lived through homelessness and exploitation, are the ones they come for first because we’re not polished enough to hide it.

I have lived that. The music saved me by giving me a way to turn the pain into something real. The industry tried to take that and turn it against me. But here’s the thing: they have not succeeded. The sensitivity and intuition that Jeff Buckley defended so clearly are still the strongest parts of who I am and what I do. They’re what made Beauty After Bruises possible after everything. They’re what keeps me writing songs and refusing to lie even when it costs me gigs, my livelihood, and years of my life.

This is for every artist and musician out there who feels the same pressure, the ones who know what it is to pour their soul into the work only to have the world try to punish them for it. Society wants us to die a little so it can keep consuming the beauty we create from the pain. But we don’t have to give it what it wants. We can keep the alchemy in our own hands. We can keep speaking the truth, keep protecting the vulnerable parts instead of sacrificing them, and keep making music that actually matters instead of music that just ticks the right ideological boxes.

The culture may try to kill its artists, but it has not managed to kill this one yet. And I reckon there are a lot more of us out here who are still standing and still creating exactly because we refuse to stay as the cabin slave.

If these words resonate with you, whether you’re an artist yourself or someone who values real music that comes from the heart and not from some political script, go and stream or buy Beauty After Bruises. Instead of treating me as the victim, the police repeatedly downplayed or ignored my reports and turned their full attention on me, acting on complaints from the very person terrorising me.

I went from feeling unprotected to being treated as the offender. They arrested me at home while I was still in a towel after my shower, forcing me to dress in front of an officer with a bodycam filming. The humiliation continued with invasive searches, mugshots, fingerprints, DNA, 7 hours in custody, a further “voluntary” interview under threat of rearrest in February 2024, and charges I discovered not from the police but from vicious, targeted social media posts by journalists and trans activists, days before any official notification. The process destroyed my reputation, wrecked my music career and income, and left me with complex PTSD I am still in therapy for.

In December 2025 at Leeds Crown Court the CPS offered no evidence. I walked out not guilty. There was never any realistic prospect of conviction, yet the damage was already done. The handling of the entire case was biased, discriminatory and a disgrace.

That is why I have now lodged this complaint. It covers every stage: the repeated failure to protect me as a vulnerable woman, the apparent prioritisation of ideology over my safety, the use of my protected beliefs to drop action against my stalker, multiple serious data breaches (including leaks that exposed me to further abuse), the improper disclosure of my private address, and clear violations of my Article 8 and Article 10 rights.

There is material in the complaint I have not yet made public, but one of the most shocking episodes is what happened with the May 2025 charges. These were for the exact same matters West Yorkshire Police had already marked “No Further Action” in December 2023. I only found out on 12 May, not from the police, but from hostile posts on social media that revealed details of the impending charges three days before the charge sheet was even signed on 15 May. The official letter arrived a full week later.

When I rang the police on 13 May they told me no charges existed and that the posts were just “malicious”. That was a lie. My personal data had been leaked to people who wished me harm, while I, the subject of the data, was deliberately kept in the dark. The resulting abuse was brutal.

I’ve asked for:

An independent investigation

Immediate referral to the IOPC

Full disclosure of all relevant records and body worn video

Appropriate disciplinary action against the officers responsible

A sincere apology and every possible step to repair the harm done

I know these processes are painfully slow, months before the force even starts, potentially 6 to 18 months or more if it goes to the IOPC. But I’m in this for the long haul.

None of it would have been possible without you. Your messages, shares, quiet support and coffees kept me going when everything felt impossible. Vague "complaints" about my supposed "anti trans rhetoric." No evidence provided, no dialogue offered, no opportunity to clap back or defend myself. I hadn't even finished setting up my Ampwall artist profile or announced that I'd joined the platform.

This is not just a petty ban it is full blown cultural terrorism and another direct assault on my livelihood, my artistic integrity, and my followers' choice to enjoy and support my music without some corporate nanny gatekeeping it. Shapleigh's email had the gall to dangle a return ticket if I "change my attitude" and rewrite my core beliefs, like I am some programmable drone who will abandon biological facts and common sense just to scrape by in the music industry’s puritan PC echo chamber. Does this self righteous clown really think he is enlightened, dictating that I deny reality to keep the lights on? It is straight up Orwellian dystopia, thoughtcrime enforcement disguised as "inclusivity."

Ampwall's phony "champion of independents" facade crumbles under their own weight as they play woke thought police, censoring anyone who dares stray from the approved narrative. But this is not isolated. The entire woke music industry is rotten to the core: Bandcamp, Spotify, the labels, the festivals. They are all infected with this totalitarian virus. They preach "diversity" while crushing dissent, "empowerment" while blacklisting artists who will not kneel to the gender cult or whatever flavour of the month ideology they are pushing. Independent musicians are supposed to thrive outside the mainstream machine, but these platforms are just extensions of it, enforcing conformity with bans, shadowbans, and deplatforming. It is a war on free expression, where "progressive" means regressive control, and "safe spaces" are code for silencing opposition.

Fuck Ampwall and the whole cabal of spineless enablers in the music biz who prioritise virtue signalling over actual artistry. If you are an artist or fan tired of this bullshit, it is time to build real alternatives that do not cave to the mob. Fuck the woke music industry. It’s been tough, but I’m more determined than ever to stand up for free speech and make sure women’s voices aren’t silenced.

Back in December 2023, West Yorkshire Police arrested me for what they called “harassment”. It was about three things: an interview I did on GB News, a speech I gave at the Let Women Speak event in Leeds on 18 November 2023, and an unrecorded four hour X Live Space chat on 8 December 2023 hosted by The Famous Artist Birdy Rose. When they questioned me, they couldn’t point to anything specific I said that was against the law. In the end they said I hadn’t committed any crimes, there would be no further action, and closed the case. I thought that was the end of it.

Then on 12 May 2025, I got a shock. I saw posts on X and Facebook saying I was facing criminal charges for allegedly breaching a non-molestation order that had already expired in February 2024. These charges carry a potential punishment of up to five years in prison.

This order was granted to a trans activist without me even knowing about it, no hearing, no chance to explain my side, nothing. At the time, this person was under police investigation and had bail conditions prohibiting contact with me due to months of online abuse, complaints to my workplace, and even tracking down my old address and showing up on my doorstep, which was utterly terrifying.

After that incident the police did a DASH assessment, gave me a high risk score and a MARAC referral. My old address was flagged for priority emergency response, security cameras and window alarms were installed. I was assigned a Victim Support worker and placed on an emergency housing list. They even told me to get my own non-molestation order to keep this person away from the property, which I did. But his behaviour didn’t stop, it just got worse.

Despite the ongoing police investigation and bail conditions prohibiting contact with me, a family court soon granted him a non-molestation order against me, issued ex parte without my presence, a hearing, or any review of his history. The court’s decision gave him a tool to have me arrested whenever he wanted, without a warrant or clear reason, turning things around to make me look like the aggressor.

This order wasn’t about protecting him, it was about control. After getting it, his harassment escalated. He monitored my public appearances, including interviews, podcasts, and social media posts, screen recording everything to report to the police as a potential breach, often complaining about my so called ‘anti trans’ views.

Finding out about the charges through social media from trans activists with a known agenda against me felt like a slap in the face, especially since I was not formally notified by police until a week later. The letter I got from the police was really vague, with no clear details about what I supposedly said to break the expired order. It just pushed me to plead guilty for a lighter punishment, which felt like they were trying to scare me into admitting something without clear evidence.

The weeks before my plea hearing at Leeds Magistrates’ Court were exhausting. Just minutes before the hearing I was handed the prosecution’s case summary, which lacked specifics about the alleged offending words or evidence to review. My solicitor had little time to grasp the complexities of my case, leaving me wondering how anyone could mount a proper defence under such conditions. I was sitting in the waiting room next to people facing serious charges, like armed robbery, and there I was, dealing with accusations over words no one could clearly pin down. It felt so unreal.

In the courtroom, it was cold and intimidating. I’d never been in trouble before, and the whole setup seemed designed to make you feel terrified. The prosecution pointed to one line from my Let Women Speak speech, at 1 minute 21, where I said I was being stalked and threatened, mentioned getting a court injunction, and noted a police investigation. That’s what they’re basing the charges on. I pleaded not guilty because I believe I have the right to speak out, and I’m not backing down.

The prosecution also tried to impose bail conditions to stop me from speaking about my case publicly, while trans activists with a known agenda against me, had already spread the charges online weeks earlier with no consequences. But thankfully, the judge didn’t impose those restrictions. However I’m still being cautious about what I post on social media, because I respect the legal process and don’t want to do or say anything that could be twisted against me.

Going through this on my own as a woman has been tough, and it’s been a real eye-opener to see how systems meant to keep women and children safe are being twisted to shut people like me up. My case isn’t just about me it’s part of a bigger, frightening pattern where vague charges about what we say are used to silence women, especially when we speak up about our rights, our safety, or men invading our spaces.

It’s infuriating that taxpayers’ money is being wasted on dragging a single line from my Let Women Speak speech through the courts, while police and court time is pulled away from helping women and children facing real horrors like domestic abuse, violence, rape, or grooming gangs. This messed-up focus leaves so many women without the protection they need, showing how the system seems to care more about silencing us than saving lives. The fact that legal abuse is becoming normal to target women’s voices while calls to hurt us go ignored, is a massive injustice.

It’s so confusing that my 2023 speech, which the police originally said was fine and closed the case on, is now being treated as a crime in 2025, with a possible five-year prison sentence looming. Waiting years for a trial, maybe not until 2026 or 2027, makes me feel like this whole process is designed to wear me down. The constant uncertainty is exhausting, and it’s hard to shake the feeling that the system’s punishing me for speaking out before I even get my day in court. With a pre-trial hearing set for Leeds Crown Court on 24 July 2025, this whole situation just feels overwhelming to think about.

This week’s High Court ruling against Northumbria Police, won by the brilliant Linzi Smith with Fair Cop’s support, proves why this fight matters so much. The judge ruled that police marching in Pride events and displaying trans flags breached their duty to stay impartial, especially when policing matters of sex and free speech.

This hits close to home for me. Like Linzi, who was hounded for her gender-critical tweets, banned from Newcastle United matches, and left terrified by death threats with no police action, I’m being targeted for speaking out. I’m facing charges over a speech about my experiences, while the person who harassed me walks free. The ruling shows how police can pick sides, undermining trust and silencing women who defend fundamental women’s rights. This victory gives me hope that fairness can prevail and it’s why I’m more determined than ever to keep going.

As always, this is my personal account and is not intended to influence legal proceedings or target anyone. Please don’t seek out, contact or bother anyone involved in this case. Let’s keep this about truth and justice, not drama.

Thanks for standing by me. I’ll keep you posted as things move forward.

Louise
XX

Subscribe now

If you’d like to support me in this fight for free speech and women’s rights, please consider buying me a coffee at https://buymeacoffee.com/louisedistras. Wrapped in a towel I faced two officers in my living room, prompted by a complaint from a ‘trans rights’ activist who had stalked me, found my private address, and terrified me by appearing at my door. I was forced to dress in front of a bodycam, subjected to DNA collection, fingerprinting, a mugshot, and a seven-hour (initially feeling like five, per police disclosures) interrogation under caution. They questioned my appearances on GB News, my speech at the Let Women Speak rally in Leeds, and my participation in a live X Space with The Famous Artist Birdy Rose. The police found no unlawful words, released me with no further action and closed the case. The ordeal itself was the punishment.

In May 2025, the Crown Prosecution Service charged me for my 2023 speech at the rally and comments in the X Space, reviving a case West Yorkshire Police had closed, claiming my words harassed my stalker. Meanwhile the Irish rap group Kneecap, filmed at a November 2024 London gig waving a Hezbollah flag and chanting “Up Hamas, up Hezbollah,” faced no charges despite supporting terrorist groups banned under the UK’s Terrorism Act 2000. At a 2023 show they incited violence with “The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP,” chilling words given the murders of MPs Jo Cox and David Amess. Yet UK counter-terrorism police only assessed their actions, and their US and Canada tour continues unaffected.

My support for women’s sex-based rights sparked a vicious campaign of abuse starting in 2023. My agent dropped me, my tour for Beauty After Bruises was cancelled, and I was blacklisted from the music industry. I spoke out against this intimidation and my stalker’s actions only to be arrested and now prosecuted two years later. Kneecap, however, is celebrated, their provocative rhetoric framed as art, while my story is ignored by mainstream British media. This double standard exposes a legal system weaponised by vague laws like the Public Order Act and Communications Act, selectively enforced to silence dissent. West Yorkshire Police’s overreach, arresting an autistic girl for a comment about an officer or a woman for tweeting a gender-critical sticker, shows a pattern of targeting those who challenge progressive dogma.

Kneecap denies supporting Hamas or Hezbollah, condemning attacks on civilians and apologising to MPs’ families, but their filmed actions contradict their claims. They perform to sold-out crowds, I face up to five years in prison. This selective prosecution reveals a crisis: women defending biological reality are pariahs, while those flirting with terrorism are cultural icons. The music industry, which should champion free expression, abandoned me to appease the mob.

This is bigger than my ordeal, being dragged from my shower, humiliated, and prosecuted for words from 2023. When speech is policed unevenly, and dissent is punished while terrorism is excused, freedom is lost. We must reclaim the law to protect women, free speech, and truth. Join me in fighting back to ensure justice for all, not just those with the “right” slogans.

Subscribe now

If you’d like to support me in this fight for free speech and women’s rights, please consider buying me a coffee at https://buymeacoffee.com/louisedistras. I blocked him on every platform and have had no direct interaction since. I reported his actions to the police but the harassment escalated in 2023 due to my gender critical views. Since then I’ve endured persistent abuse, including malicious messages, attempts to damage my reputation and professional life, the discovery of my address, intimidation at my home, and loitering outside my property while questioning my neighbours about my personal life. I reported these incidents to the police, obtained a non-molestation order and tried to move forward, but the behaviour persisted. Despite police involvement, including the individual’s arrest and bail with conditions prohibiting contact, no further action was taken against them. Meanwhile, a non-molestation order was issued against me without my knowledge whilst the individual was on bail, and I was not given an opportunity to defend myself in court.

In December 2023, West Yorkshire Police arrested me on suspicion of harassment without fear of violence, alleging my appearance on GB News, my Let Women Speak speech, and the X Live Space discussion constituted harassment of this individual. After investigation, the police found no evidence of a crime, released me with no further action, and closed the case. Shockingly, eighteen months later, I’ve been charged with allegedly breaching a non-molestation order - an order that expired in February 2024. The authorities have provided no specific details about what I am alleged to have said that constitutes a crime.

I was shocked to learn about these charges through public posts on X and Facebook on 12 May 2025 by people I’ve never met or spoken to, who have been attacking me for my gender-critical views. These individuals used their platforms to publicise the allegations before I was officially notified, adding to the distress of the situation. When I contacted West Yorkshire Police on 13 May they denied any charges existed, yet I received a letter on 19 May confirming charges issued on 15 May. This sequence of events feels deeply unsettling and has left me questioning the fairness of the process.

I put on a brave face, but this relentless ordeal has severely strained my mental and physical health, making every day a struggle. I fear that following my plea hearing restrictive bail conditions may silence me, allowing only one false narrative to prevail. Without platforms like X and Substack my story would be buried. This case isn’t just about me - it’s about protecting free speech and ensuring the legal system isn’t misused to silence dissent. It’s also about standing up for women who speak out about their experiences of abuse, ensuring they’re protected and not punished.

Your support means everything as I prepare for court this week.
