The energy was up, and I mean constantly. I really couldn’t sleep the night before because the perfectionist in me wanted everything to go right. Even though I had a wonderful team, I was very much so involved in production which is just the nature of true independent filmmaking. Everyone is sometimes working more than one role and working at full capacity. That morning, I made sure to meet with different cast and crew members individually in my pickup truck as we all waited in the parking lot of the recording studio. It was important that we were all on the same page energetically and spiritually. When our audio engineer for the day finally let us in, magic was definitely in the air. There was this infectious feeling that permeated, and I believe that everyone together at the same time fully understood that we were embarking on something truly special. The irony behind the whole schedule is that we shot some of the most important scenes on the first day. Even though this positive energy held up, the most vivid thing I remember is hitting a block. I remember the exact moment; I sat down on a 90s furnished office chair, and I literally couldn’t think, say, or do anything more. I thought to myself, “Wow this is really happening right now.” A few noticed and sat with me as the fog evaporated, Mohamed Williams especially. It took about 45 minutes to regain the strength to keep directing. Often filmmaking involves an immense pressure that you really can’t describe. This on top of everything else can easily result in extreme mental and physical exhaustion. However, the key is knowing that you’re not alone. It was my crew and cast that gave me the fuel to finish those last few hours after we hit the second location in the record store. Day one was so inspiring and taught me I would have to take better care of myself in order to make it through the next two days. And in the grand scheme of things, even though it was intense, the days that followed were even more eventful and demanding. . . .

DAY 2 - what can happen in a day?

There really is no other way to say this, but Day 2 was extremely long. In fact, it was the most packed day of entire schedule. And with Day 1 in mind, I didn’t know how I was going to hold up. I remember having an extremely early wakeup and having to put out a fire immediately. There was a schedule mixup and some of our crew members were running behind. This fire was in contrast to the elements as we prepared to film outside in January. It was cold as shit. The rain, sleet, and snow combo came unexpectedly, but it ended up serving the production and added a special layer to the film. The sound, sexiness, and coziness of the weather really enhanced the scene in a way I never anticipated. It almost felt like it was God sent. Following a busy morning of outside filming, we arrived at the 2nd location indoors. As 30 to 40 people crammed inside together for several hours, this space became our new home together. And like any shared living quarters containing different personalities and people, eventually there might be that one person who crashes out. And that’s exactly what happened. However, in the grand scheme of things, this lesson reinforced that not everyone will always be happy when you’re filming and sometimes people are going through different things when they’re on your set. My job is to try and smooth, balance, and even things out despite whatever I may be managing internally. There was one moment where I looked over the foyer in the house, outside past the windows, as light and time rapidly escaped. My assistant director finally reeled me in, and I had to pivot, adapt, and rearrange some scenes to make sure the story held up its integrity. We all ran upstairs to capture the last daytime scene before the sun went down. In filmmaking there’s always little fires everywhere. The ultimate goal is to make sure that all of the fire, desire, and energy is felt on screen. Day 2 was definitely a preface to who I would need to be to put out even more fires on our final glorious day.

DAY 3 - Go big or . . .

On the final day, we prepared for the most complex and grandest of scenes throughout the whole production. We had car rigs. We had to set up an entire gym to make it look like the best school dance ever, and we had a scene at a nightclub. There were so many large feats looming, but I knew we had cultivated enough strength over the last two days to see everything through. Walking into the last day, my fear was that, somehow, the school gym scene wouldn’t happen because it took a lot of hands to make that set come to life in so little time, but as faith would have it, it was the most beautiful production set better than I could have imagined. The setup and breakdown took longer than the actual shooting. I commanded with new sense of authority to make sure we got the shots needed before the location kicked us out and our time was officially up. What I remember most about day three was the celebration in front of and behind the scenes. During a club scene, we looped a song repeatedly- shout out to Burna Boy. Each time we reset the scene “Back to One” the energy and the effort was on 1000 from the entire cast and background talent. There were no lines in these scenes, just pure action, intention, and body language that said it all. My wonderful creative director and makeup artist, Kerla, made sure to glam me up as we prepped for an impromptu celebration shortly after everything finished. All I can remember was this immense feeling of joy after filming was finally wrapped. The way that everyone rallied around and understood all that I was carrying in that moment, really felt like this entire experience was truly something meant to be. I also held extreme gratitude for everyone who had showed up in helping me make this film come to life. There were times where I feared that maybe there wouldn’t be enough extras or that maybe one of the locations would fall through. But in the end, everything worked out. I thank God. I will remember this day for the rest of my life.

You see, for me, Love Song is more than just another film project. It’s one of those projects that I know has a life. Our hashtag is #lovesongforever. And I truly believe in that. I believe in the Lauryn Hill effect of this film. All it takes is one project or one decision to change your life forever. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was a classic album, and in fact, one of the greatest albums of our generation. There is a mantra I’ve been saying to myself lately:

You could work a 1000 hours or 1 but at a certain threshold of your trajectory it becomes more about the choices you make more than anything else in order to start seeing the fruits of your labor. God is funny that way. I’m really big on seeing a project through and not being so distracted by the noise and doing so many different things. Quality over quantity. I’m the steward of my own work and with all my heart, I will make sure that there is more to come. Most importantly, I know I tried my best.

Wins and Losses

Love Song has currently been selected into 5 film festivals. We are so honored to have premiered at American Black Film Festival followed by acceptances into the Military and Veteran Entertainment Awards, Atlanta Shortsfest, Detroit Black Film Festival and Urban Film Festival. While it is an amazing accomplishment to get into any film festival, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention some of our losses. Love Song has applied to about 35 festivals and we’re approaching the middle of our film festival circuit. So far, we’ve received just as many rejections as acceptances including some coveted slots which I’ve had to take in stride. There are several factors that go into selections, often not including the actual quality of your film. Knowing this, you really can’t take anything personal. I think it’s important for us filmmakers to be vulnerable about our losses because so much of online is about only the wins. No one tells you that you have to pay to play in order to finally get your Yes in a sea of Nos. Live Creative is about the vulnerability needed to be resilient along the journey.

It’s a random Wednesday. We’re on the Kyoto leg of our Japan trip. I’m laying on the bed, literally only a foot up from the ground, in classic Japanese fashion. There’s wood everywhere, minimalist pottery, stones, zen vibes. And while everything around me is moving at an earthly pace, I somehow still feel disengaged from time. Reality is, while my trip was amazing, I was also simultaneously recovering from back to back colds, grappling with mommy guilt on my first official trip of the year, and also managing ongoing production company business 7,000 miles away.

Time.

I have been grappling a lot with it lately. It moved so fast, I’m just now processing Q1. It surely doesn't feel like there is enough of it. But what is enough exactly? Aren’t I where I am supposed to be now? And where exactly is one supposed to be at any given point in time? If there is one thing I learned in Tokyo: Tokyo does not wait for you to be ready. I remember standing in the middle of Shibuya crossing thinking “This is where I need to be. I am here now.”

At that exact time, I was also quietly managing one of the biggest announcements of my career. My film Love Song has been selected to premiere at the American Black Film Festival this year. Click to see the full write up here.

I want to sit with that last sentence for a second because it still doesn’t feel entirely real. This film, which we shot in January 2026 right here in the DMV, is about to have its moment on one of the most important stages in Black cinema. And at the same time, our other short film Love Zuri is making its own way through the festival circuit with more announcements coming soon. I did all this with an amazing team and the organizing power of God.

You often hear the saying: You are living what you prayed for. And yes it’s true, I am. I once prayed to become a family woman, an entrepreneur, a doctor, an award winning filmmaker and the list goes on. The easiest way to let all this goodness escape you is to be shackled by time, and to abandon gratitude. Constant remembrance is required to savor and really appreciate all the wins and lessons that happen along your journey. Take some time to look at yourself as if you didn’t already know yourself. How amazed would you be?

But back to Tokyo for a moment. Not just the exceptional cleanliness, graciousness, and modernity, but what I took away deep down. Because this lesson wasn’t just about travel. It was about the tension between building toward something and being present for what’s already there. I think we all spend years rushing toward the next thing. The next project, the next milestone, the next validation, the next proof that we are on the right track. And standing in a city that moves at the speed of light somehow reminded me to slow down. The most important time is right now. Not when the film premieres. Not when the next acceptance comes in. Right now, in the messy, full, overwhelming middle of it all. That doesn’t mean I’m not excited. I am. Wildly. But I’m learning to hold excitement and the stillness at the same time.

While attending American Black Film Festival in Miami this past June, I had the opportunity to listen to a motivational and improvisational talk by Dondré Whitfield. He shared this simple but very eloquent realization.

“A passion is what you do for yourself and a purpose is what you’re meant to do for others.”- Dondré Whitfield

At the most divine time, this quote really stuck with me and pushed me to acknowledge the storm stirring inside of me. It was time to choose something that I could sustain without needing validation, something I was not only good at, but was also divinely ordained. The reality is that juggling all the passions can get overwhelming and lead to chronic burnout. The pressure can be crippling especially if you’ve had issues with overthinking, perfectionism, or productivity. Sometimes stepping outside our comfort zones means doing something, and for others it may mean doing nothing — radical rest, liberating self-love, or whatever you want to call it. In May, when my career coach told me to drop everything, it jolted my spirit and forced me to really stop and listen to not just my body, but what my soul needed.

However, this is not a jab at the journey. The journey, the trial and error, and the creative exploration is what builds us, colors our lives, and makes us who we are uniquely. Pauses can be powerful, and the exact revolutionary beat you need to actually keep moving with more aligned intention. When I made the choice to focus on film directing, it’s quite spectacular how opportunities just started opening up. All the energies will align to serve your purpose when you finally make the choice.

Some discernment I am carrying into Q3 and Q4

• You do not have to always monetize your creativity, passions, or gifts even though Western society or social media tricks us into believing otherwise. This can often misconstrue your feelings around self-worth.

It’s 7am on a Saturday morning, and per usual I am holding on to whatever last seconds of sleep my son will let me get before he succumbs to barging in my room. When I think of my son, I see my inner child at work— or even better at play. How is it that he seems to have the most exhilarating weekend, even while making zero plans? How is it that he literally finds joy in whatever is on the schedule? Besides the fact that I’m his manager, how is it that he does the absolute least but also ends up doing the absolute most? That type of freedom — that type of artful living, is seductive.

It’s been a little minute because:

Life can get Messy

If you’re anything like me, maybe you’re realizing you’re just going to be chronically two weeks behind despite putting so much effort and intention into your schedule. I’ve had a daily planner consistently since the 5th grade. And while organization and structure has definitely been a strength, at times it can also be an axe — cutting down the natural flow of life. When life gets messy, maybe you need to get rid of the plans. For us overachievers out there who tend to over plan, what if we finally rode the rollercoaster of life and went with the flow. Some days I contemplate completely doing away with scheduling. Perhaps that would allow for fully embracing life with curiosity. When you are hyper focused or locked in as they say, you sometimes forget that there are other places, people, or concepts out there to explore.

Your Inner Child Wants to Play

When is the last time you had fun? Not the type of fun that has to be scheduled 6 weeks out, but instead a natural and organic fun that blossoms throughout the day. The type of fun where you wake up like you’re on vacation (without an itinerary) and ask yourself “What shall we do today?” Those days are truly the best because they take on a life of their own. And more importantly, you give yourself permission to play. Playfulness is a great gateway, and some may argue the only gateway, to creativity. When we allow ourselves to seize the day, we make room for new possibilities.

Rest allows you to Receive

When you are well rested you have time to listen. When you start to listen, you not only hear what’s on the outside, but you start playing closer attention to what’s on the inside too. There’s a whole universe inside of you waiting to be discovered. The Creative Book of Revelations tells us to remember that the rest of our bodies still exists. Sometimes overworking the mind sets us up to miss cosmic signs or never truly realize our inner wisdom, which reemerges after periods of rest.

Last year, while 7 months pregnant, I went to a hot ass New Orleans at the peak of summer to attend Essence Fest. My television pilot, Aisha, made it as an official selection. And while I don’t necessarily recommend walking up and down NOLA streets sweating with a baby tap dancing on your bladder- I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. As a result, I asked my OBGYN if it was safe to attend. I explained to her why I was traveling and the fact I was going to be in Essence Film Festival, and before I left I remember her telling me. . .”Wow you must really be the next Issa Rae.” Now, of course this was meant to be a flattering compliment, but it actually took every ounce of me to not sharply reply back. . . “I am Issa Rae.” Meaning, I love her, I am her, I see myself in her, we pretty much do the same thing, but she’s just famous, and oh I just haven’t broken in yet because I sort of been juggling two careers and a family. Let’s just say my silly little ego had a moment. So instead I just chuckled, walked out, and said “Yeah, thanks”. . .once again silently coming to terms with the feeling of knowing what you’re capable of, but accepting that you just haven’t crossed the line. This feeling sits with me most days.

The Big Break

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about breaking into the film industry and the fact that I really haven’t yet- at least not in the way I want to. If you also have been thinking about the same, no matter what industry you’re in, let’s take a moment to intentionally release any anxiety this has ever caused you, and calm our nervous systems down. Most indie filmmakers or creatives— we’ve built a strong portfolio and were continuing to do the work, but we just haven’t made it passed the so called gatekeepers— the high profile commercial gigs, the bougie execs, super competitive fellowships, or major network deals. Maybe you’re at the stage where you know you’re damn good and ready, but no one will give you the golden chance, because you haven’t already had, well. . . another golden chance. You’re still on the other side of success, but are you really?

The Success

What level of success is good enough, even when you are already making major inroads, impact, and influence in your respective communities? I think it’s important to explore just exactly what and which opportunities define success for you, in whatever field you happen to be in. For the filmmakers out there- is it an Oscar, having a box office hit, streaming deal, or being able to showrun your own original television show? And if it is. . .why? Aren’t you already doing the work you love to do? Is it more about the accolades or the experience? For most, we focus on the prestige of it all, but not necessarily what it means for our lives. While it may seem natural to always reach for the other side, if we’re always doing that will we truly ever be happy?

The Reality

I became super laser focused on this topic last week, so I sat down with amazing director B.Monét. Together we discussed how things aren’t always glam on the other side, while also acknowledging that it’s okay to want more. I’m a big proponent of letting people be great, without trying to always highlight misery or downplay wins in order to feel better about ourselves. That being said, and having also experiencing this myself, sometimes your wins lead to dead ends even though all the people see are the successes. Sometimes the big wins took big sacrifices that no one will have a clue about. Also, nobody sees you in the waiting periods when you don’t have any work. The epiphany of this meeting was that following my own path and trusting the work I am putting into my own projects is totally okay and is totally enough. In this season, and if you haven’t realized it by now— you should be betting on yourself and standing ten toes down on the work you’re putting out- Cowboy Carter style. It’s always best to focus on putting out work you’re sincerely proud of instead of worrying about the metrics, the critics, and how it will be perceived. Some other key points from our conversation are below:

Make sure your current work reflects the work that you want to do.

Timing and networking are still tried and true.

Opportunity + preparation = Success

Ultimately your success relies on your energetic alignment and divine calling.

If we take a look at Issa, Ava, Spike or whomever, the lesson is still the same. Just because other people are taking a certain path to get to a certain level doesn’t mean that path will necessarily work for you. Case studies show us that the best way to launch is by being authentically you.

The last time I created a piece of content strictly for my audience, my love tribe, was at least three years ago. What happened in between that time? Fear, heartbreak, self-doubt, self-sabotage, rejection, distractions but also joy, transformation, reclamation, growth, healing, re(birth), epiphanies and everything in between. The bottom line upfront: it’s okay to stop and reinvent yourself. So for all creative purposes, I will be authoring these newsletters personally as we journey together towards success- or whatever that means. (BTW I use dashes organically and a human is writing this ;) And don’t panic, I barely have time to spam anybody.

The thing is. . . it’s scary, or at least we make it seem that way.

Do you ever feel like you are held hostage by this crippling fear? That’s why after digging up some of my own creative content archives, I am revisiting a concept I coined in 2020 called Taking Scheduled Leaps. Take a second to close your eyes, count to three, get ready to jump, and then do the damn thing! It’s time, and I’m here to remind you because I am simultaneously doing it too. We can fail forward, or simply just win, together. The point is you have to start right now, and without regard for what anyone else thinks. Perfection, while it has sharpened me, has also held me back several times. So when things start seeming stagnant, I light my own ass on fire and force my mental generator to kick me into all systems GO!

The thing is. . . people will say you’re doing the most . . . or the least.

Listen, many people will say I’ve lived nine lives- doctor, fitness coach, actress, bodybuilder, dancer, Army Major, mother, wife, filmmaker, yogi, writer, entrepreneur- but I realized that doesn’t mean I can’t have a tenth. You can have eleven and umpteenth more lives if you like, or scrap all of them all at once. Sometimes we get this unspoken fear that we are displeasing by simply being our dynamic, versatile, and powerful selves. We have to let go of the notion that we are meant to stay the same and follow one path until the very end, even when it no longer serves us. Humans are much more capable and complex. I am inviting you to live outside the box.

The thing is. . . it’s ultimately up to you.
