Few musicians have ever made a mark like Dolly Parton. Her extraordinary philanthropy (donating over $600 million to disaster relief, medical research, education and literacy, providing over 300 million books to deserving kids), her wonderful humor, her iconic style, and her performances on stage and screen will never be forgotten. And then there is her music — her voice, her songwriting, her underrated guitar chops — which was at once crystalline and ethereal, wild and winsome, traditional and commercial, country and pop — that at its very very best sounds so emotionally pure and artistically timeless.

If you’ve been listening to CRSTL.FM this week you’ve heard so many of our DJs pay tribute to Dolly. And we are sure there will be more this weekend and into next week. That’s the beauty of community radio: Real humans sharing their love and knowledge of music with other humans, whether in times of joy or in times sadness.

Concert review: Shinyribs at Off Broadway, August 20, 2026

Introduced as the “Shiniest Man in Showbiz” and the “John Hamm of Boudin” among many others, Kevin Russell took the stage at Off Broadway this past Thursday night to front the band Shinyribs. It was a robust lineup on stage: drums, bass, guitar/pedal steel, keyboards, and two backup singers. The night was dedicated to a long-time friend, a St. Louisan, who passed recently, whom he met as a teenager at a record store in Shreveport.

Mr. Russell is shockingly agile. He danced through the night on stage and with a few lucky members in the crowd. At one point during an incredible cover of Bobby Blue Bland’s song, “Members Only,” he struck a pose fit for a centerfold at the edge of the stage.

The set included a selection of songs from the upcoming album, Real Alligator. A fantastic version of “Take Me to Lake Charles” took an off ramp into Steppenwolf’s “Born To Be Wild,” sung with the spirit of Mr. Mojo Risin himself. The night also featured a short and sweet version of the Dead’s “Brokedown Palace.”

I’ve loved Mr. Russell’s former band, The Gourds, since I heard the album Dem’s Good Beeble. It is one of my all-time favorites. I don’t recall much about seeing them over two decades ago at Blueberry Hill, but I don’t remember it being as raucous or vaudevillian as this concert.

Shinyribs put on an incredibly entertaining show. This is made more exciting by the twists and turns made within songs, seemingly at a whim. Throughout the night, you could see members of the band keeping an eye on the singer for any cue about where things are going next. Not all music lends itself to this type of performance, but when you get to experience a group that know how to pull it off, it is a thing of beauty.

New book on the Smiths features CRSTL DJ Rob Levy

Host of the weekly CRSTL.FM radio show Juxtaposition, Rob Levy is well known for playing the Smiths and Smiths’ adjacent bands. No surprise then that he contributed to It’s Time The Tale Were Told – A People’s History of The Smiths, which is out now on Spenwood Books. And Rob also recently received a proclamation from the mayor’s office declaring August 16, 2026 “Juxtaposition Day,” which recognizes his contributions to community radio.

This week we shine the CRSTL Volunteer Spotlight on Carlos G. Charles, longtime host of Latin Hemispheres, both on KDHX (RIP) and now on CRSTL.FM, every Tuesday afternoon 12PM-2PM. Every week Carlos brings his knowledge and love of Latin music and culture to the St. Louis (and beyond) radio audience. His blend of sounds is both classic and contemporary, traditional and progressive, all at the same time. There really is nothing quite like Latin Hemispheres.

Tell us about your relationship to radio and to music. When did that start?

It all began at KDHX, as a phone volunteer, around 1996 .Being in that environment with other folks that had interest in music/radio/community, was exciting.

Growing up in South America, as a young child, my mom would be in the house/kitchen and I would watch her prepare meals while the radio was playing. The music was fun, happy, exciting; the commercials, jingles added to the magic of listening & singing along.

So, being around the radio station around pledge time and answering phones was almost like being on-air, something I dreamt of as a kid. I was a bit of a ham, when uncles, aunts, family members would come to our house, I would put on the radio, get dressed up, and do “karaoke,” put on a show.

At that time, (in the ‘90s) there was a Latin Music show. Sabados Tropicales on KDHX. It was suggested if someone was bi-lingual (Spanish) they can answer phones. I did that for a couple years, not just for that show, but other programs. That was a great way to be part of the radio station and the community. Doing that for a couple years, it was rare that someone called in that needed a Spanish speaker, but I was ready.

What inspired you to apply for a show on KDHX?

Somewhere around 1999 or so, the programmer for the Latin music show was leaving and a spot opened for someone to do the show. It took a lot of encouragement from a very close friend as she pushed me to apply. I did not have vast knowledge of Tropical music, the radio station had a collection of this kind of music and I slowly got into it. I arrived in the USA when I was 7 years old, so I grew up around top 40, pop music, radio stations in Minneapolis, Minnesota did not play tropical music. At that time, our family did not bring a lot of their music on tapes or cassettes.

I had great help from Andy Coco at KDHX while he prepared me to put a demo tape together. All the music came from the existing library at the station. He taught me about the board and how to talk on air; he had a major influence on completing that process. Once the demo was finished, it was a matter of waiting for approval. It was a Friday night that I got a call from the director at the time, Bev Hacker. I can’t recall the exact wording, but something like, “Can you come in tomorrow to do your show. I’ll handle the board while you talk.” What joy & excitement. I was approved. I show up that Saturday, she was waiting and answered the door. I did no show prep, since I’ve been using the CDs at the station. I figured those CDs are still there and I would use them. But when she opened the door and I nothing in my hands, no albums/CDs, nothing, her face was in shock. “Where is your music?” she asked. I scrambled to get the CDs that I’ve been using. We had a few minutes to gather them and we went into the air room.

Once we started, it was like magic. I was calm, read the CD info, handed her the disc, she queued it up, operated the board, I made the announcements, her microphone was never on, just me. I was calm, excited, nervous all at the same time, but it was great.

For a few months, I did the show alone, until one day they asked if I would mind having a co-host. I agreed.

The few CDs that I had at the time, were not Tropical music, my collection was traditional music from Bolivia, where I was born. I started to mix that into my playlists, along with some pop, ballads, rock, all in Spanish. For a few months, I did the show alone, until one day the KDHX personnel asked if I would mind having a co-host. I agreed and I met Lydia. She had a larger collection of music, as we began our on-air journey. She turned me on to a lot of artists I did not know. She had knowledge that she passed on to me. This is where I started to search for music beyond the standard Latin tunes. I wanted to share with the community and expand that common kinda music. At the time, it was hard to find alternative Latin music, but, for me, it was important to expand that spectrum.

Tell us about your show Latin Hemispheres. What’s the concept? What artists and genres do you play?

When we first started, Lydia and I, we had to agree on what we should call the show. She wanted Alma Latina. I was not too opposed, previous to that, when I was doing solo, the show was Latin Hemispheres. Since we had contrasting music tastes it made great chemistry for on-air. It was an amiable contrast & it was a blast. After a few shows together, we agreed that it would be best that we alternate how we ran the show. One week she ran the board and brought in her selections; the following week it was my show, we had fun and that fun came across to the listeners. Alma Latina had a great run for a few years [and Lydia is now back on the air on CRSTL.FM with Herencia Latina every Monday Noon-2PM]. Lydia stepped down and I had a solo show again for a couple years. KDHX personnel changed the schedule and I was moved to a 3:00-5:00 am slot. I changed the name, in a daring attempt at being alternative, I named it Night Latin Jass and Mucho Mas in The Morning. That lasted about a year, more or less. Another schedule change came about and I got the 1:00-3:00 am slot, Latin Hemispheres was reborn.

How does your relationship to Community Radio St. Louis and community broadcasting relate to anything else in your life?

Apart from music, I was active in the marijuana legalization movement in the ‘90s. I was part of a “tree hugging” group, saving part of the Shawnee National Forest. I also volunteered in different grassroots groups in St. Louis. I was the emcee for the organization, “Hispanic Festival Inc” for about 9 years. It was through KDHX that I got involved with them. The festivals brought national acts to St. Louis, food vendors, arts and crafts. They continue to do that; I had a marvelous time.

When you’re not broadcasting with CRSTL.FM, what are your favorite things to do in St. Louis (or anywhere else)?

When I’m not searching for music, I spend my spare time doing yard work; they call it “hardscaping.” Moving mulch, shifting rocks, creating walkways and paths with mostly all natural materials, doing all this in my front and back yard. If not in the yard, I enjoy cooking & making meals. Another pastime I enjoy is mending, patching and designing patterns on clothing.

Do you have any favorite CRSTL.FM programs or DJs? Any other streaming radio stations / programs you enjoy listening to?

Since I don’t have the capability to stream CRSTL in my vehicle, kinda hard to say. Juxtaposition celebrates 30 years of community radio

On his weekly radio show Juxtaposition, Rob Levy has been broadcasting eclectic rock and pop music in St. Louis for three decades, first with KDHX (RIP) and now with CRSTL.FM. Don’t call it a comeback

It has been a rocky few years for community radio in St. Louis, as longtime stalwart KDHX (88.1 FM) descended into a bitter feud between its leadership and volunteer staff that ultimately resulted in the station going off the air in 2025. But this January finally brought cause for celebration in the saga, as more than 60 of the station’s DJs banded together to launch CRSTL.fm—it’s imbued with the KDHX spirit and once again fills the city with stellar music and smart, community-focused programming.

Legacy and revival on the Mississippi

You could hear the beat of the bass drum and tuba as the horns of the Funky Butt Brass band kicked in and the second line began its May 18, 2026, march up south Broadway from the Broadway Oyster Bar to the legendary BB’s Jazz Blues and Soups (bbsblues.com). It was a moment of pure joy as the doors, closed since 2023, opened and the band made its way through a cheering crowd toward the stage. On stage were BB’s former partner/manager John May and two of the new owner partners Marquise Knox and Steve Sullivan. They were hosting a special pre-opening event to announce that BBs was back. It was a much-needed sign of hope after some tough years in the St. Louis blues community.

A decade ago, St. Louis Blues were on a roll. The National Blues Museum (NBM) had opened downtown in 2016. The Big Muddy Blues Festival over Labor Day weekend was an annual event. In 2019 a local band, Hy-C & The Fresh Start Band, won the IBC. In a first, Big City Rhythm and Blues magazine, working in collaboration with St. Louis writers, dedicated their entire Dec 1919/Jan 2020 issue to the St. Louis blues scene. Just south of the NBM, next to the St. Louis Cardinals Busch Stadium, the blues triangle on South Broadway, BB’s, Beale on Broadway and the Broadway Oyster Bar, thrived offering live music until 3 AM. Live blues music was also available nearby at Hammerstones, The 1860’s and the Venice Café in the Soulard and Benton Park neighborhoods. KDHX, a community-owned station founded by many local blues musicians, was going strong. Life was good until it wasn’t.

The 2020 pandemic brought everything to a halt. Downtown became a ghost town as businesses shifted employees to working at home. Restaurants and entertainment places first closed temporarily, then permanently. The STL Blues Society raised tens of thousands of dollars to help support musicians. The post covid era found venues facing: an aging/diminished blues audience, a declining city population, a reluctance of people to go downtown or to go out for live music especially late at night. Andy Coco a popular bass player and producer (Dogtown Records) summed it up best: “people lost their muscle memory of going out for live music.”

The 2020-2026 era also marked the passing of many of the city’s greatest black blues performers: Kim Massie, Big George Brock, Jimmy Hinds, Marsha Evans, Roland Johnson, Gus Thornton, and Gene Jackson. Key blues venues also closed Beale on Broadway, BBs, the Harlem Tap Room (2025 tornado), and the National Blues Museum (2026). The last Big Muddy Blues Festival was held in 2019. And the community owned KDHX came to a bitter end in 2025 when bankruptcy judge approved its sale to a Christian network.

St. Louis has been here before. The 1970’s blues revival was led by black and white musicians, club owners and fans that broke racial barriers and built a community that led to BB’s, The STL Blues Society, festivals, a radio station and the NBM. Today, despite the challenges, there is hope. There is a new generation of musicians on the rise, a new community radio station, and people who have dedicated their lives and money to supporting live music and blues culture.

Dave Beardsley is one of those people. “I have always been deeply passionate about blues music and the culture; it’s who I am,” he said. That passion led him to create STLBlues.net in 2000, one of the first blues websites, which earned a 2008 Blues Music Award for Keeping the Blues Alive. The site’s open calendar, profiles, and contact information through STLBluestalent.net receives thousands of hits each day. Beardsley has continued expanding his reach with new stories and links on Facebook, Instagram, a YouTube channel @STLBluesnet, and, most recently, bluesforever.org. The latter aims to preserve the energy of the NBM Jam Band because, as Beardsley put it, “we needed closure for all the people the museum engaged in performance. This is preservation through performance.” Two standing-room-only reunions have already brought together more than 40 NBM jam musicians.

Another source of inspiration is the multi-talented BMA award winner Paul Niehaus IV and his Blue Lotus Studios (bluelotusrecordings.com). Blues Blast award winners, vocalist Dylan Triplett and guitarist Matt “The Rattlesnake” Lesch, have both recorded there. Cole Allen, an impressive guitar talent, was inspired to play blues by his college roommate Matt Lesch. He and his Coldwater Creek Band just recorded their first album, My Love is Real, there. Niehaus has also been busy recording himself with three albums in four years: If I Stay Too Long, Short Story Long, and Cheap Guitar. He also recommends people keep an eye out for Marissa Menendez, a Cuban American vocalist. Other St. Louis artists to watch out for include: Meaza Joy, a 17-year-old who has opened for Samantha Fish just signed with Blind Pig Records, Devin C Williams, a one-man band of Delta style blues who took 2^nd place at the 2026 IBC, The Ivas Johns Band, a talented fun to watch pianist/vocalist Alexandra Sinclair, and Chris Shepard singer/guitarist with the Kingdom Brothers. John May also gave a shout out to these Jazz/Funk/soul artists: Kasimu Taylor trumpet, Scooter Brown sax, and keyboardist Dave Grelle and The Playadors.

The 2023 firing of longtime volunteer DJs at KDHX unleashed a firestorm that pitted station volunteers, listeners and contributors against an insular board and executive director. Listeners voted with their wallets by shifting their donations to groups opposed to the sale. Hundreds of businesses joined the opposition. The League of Volunteer Enthusiasts (LOVE) raised over $800,000. After the bankruptcy sale LOVE decided to build a new organization, Community Radio St. Louis (CRSTL.fm). Legal fees had taken a chunk, but the group still had over $500k left to build a new station. Kristin Gleich, Secretary of the CRSTL board summed up their approach: “We are building upon the lessons learned from KDHX. We need to practice mindfulness, take our time, ensure all voices are heard, encourage and support volunteers, keep the community engaged and seek new voices for broadcast.” The new station and studios went live in February. It is easy to find on the Radio Cult (free app) streaming platform. With 80 DJs, (60% former KDHX) this 24/7 platform offers an astonishing mix of genres with blues being a core strength. CRSTL like BB’s reopening has been a real sign of hope.

Seeing St. Louis’s premiere young black bluesman, Marquise Knox, standing on BB’s stage with John May and the Broadway Oyster Bar’s (BOB) Steve Sullivan, brought history full circle. Knox had made his jaw dropping debut at the age of 14 on BB’s stage. May had helped lead the earlier blues revival as a bass player, club owner and a founder of the STL Blues Society. Sullivan and his business partner, Mark Goldenberg, bought BOB in 2019. The club was famous for its New Orleans style cuisine and live music including, “The Longest Running Blues Jam Session in the Nation” hosted by Art Dwyer and the Soulard Blues Band. They all believed in its blues music, its legacy and its future in St. Louis. May and Sullivan gave Knox full credit for making the moment happen.

When May had to close BB’s, Knox mourned the loss. “It’s not a club; it’s a living, breathing institution,” he said. Determined to keep its legacy alive, he began looking for a way forward. May agreed, “We talked regularly about options, and he brought funders together several times, but it didn’t work out.” Then it did. What began as a casual conversation between Knox and Sullivan about blues and St. Louis became a discussion about legacy and vision. Knox, a blues-in-the-schools advocate who has worked to encourage young Black musicians, wanted BB’s to remain “a place for true blues players to play” and to use its stage to educate and inspire a new generation of blues musicians. Sullivan shared that vision and saw BB’s as a natural complement to BOB. “There is power in having the blues triangle on Broadway, and all the new investment going into the downtown waterfront is a long-term opportunity,” he said. That conversation quickly led to a discussion and deal with May and his business partner, Mike Ermer. Having black ownership in this legacy blues club with Knox as partner made an important statement. He will draw upon his blues music connections to help schedule talent and head up their education initiatives.

The reopening of BB’s is scheduled for September. Their announcement said it all: Plans are underway to bring back BB’s as a space where local jazz, blues and gospel artists will perform, interspersed with talent from across the country.” Sullivan will draw upon BOB’s own culinary strength in shaping a new soul and southern cuisine menu. BB’s tale, like the others in this article, is a blues story of decline and revival. This tough old industrial city mourns it losses while looking ahead with vision, persistence and people who won’t give up on the things that they love.

Community radio is many things, but one thing is for sure: diverse programming of the highest (and funnest) quality is indispensable to our mission. That’s why, after 88.1 KDHX was bankrupted and sold off by a corrupt board and executive director, we organized to build a new community radio station. One that truly resonates with the community and brings musical joy (and more) to our lives.

Jazz, blues, soul, punk, funk, country, bluegrass, hip hop, new wave, rock & roll, Americana, reggae, ska, and international folk music all emanate from CRSTL.FM 24/7. And now we’ve added a new genre — house music — to the list.

House music emerged out of the ‘80s club scene in Chicago, specifically a legendary venue called the Warehouse. As a form of electronic dance music, house draws on disco, sampling, steady beats, minimalist vocals, rich percussion, and a trance-like vibe. Significant artists include: Felix da Housecat, Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles, Marshall Jefferson, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Robin S, Crystal Waters, and Moloko just for starters.

On his new show, Tha Push, that airs every Saturday 1-3AM Central, DJ Mr. G blends together music from lesser known artists that both connect with house music but also go beyond by blending jazz, soul, funk, and more for an eclectic, soothing and grooving soundtrack. Every episode of Tha Push is at once atmospheric and highly danceable.

Get to know a little more about Gary in this week’s volunteer spotlight.

Tell us about your relationship to radio and to music. When did that start?

I first became aware of the connection between rhythm and vibrations early on in my life. My mother often mentioned that music would soothe me even before I was born. Throughout my childhood, music became my primary means of escape. My mom would play various radio stations such as KATZ and WESL, along with classic AM channels. I remember lying on the couch, swaying my head to the rhythm of the music until I drifted off to sleep. As such, the radio has always held a special place in our family’s life.

What inspired you to apply for a show on CRSTL.FM?

I’ve always had a passion for radio, which led me to enroll in a broadcasting course at Forest Park Community College. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to pursue it further.

How does your relationship to Community Radio St. Louis and community broadcasting relate to anything else in your life?

CRSTL.FM provides me with the perfect platform to dust off my production skills that have been lying dormant. With an extensive collection of music production equipment at my disposal, collaborating with CRSTL.FM sparks my creativity and motivates me to explore new artistic avenues.

Tell us about your show Tha Push. What’s the concept? What artists and genres do you play?

Tha Push was born from a collaborative session with my cousin in the studio. As we played records from the internet, I couldn’t help but think about all the incredible non-mainstream artists who deserve recognition. This inspired me to create Tha Push— a platform dedicated to showcasing talented artists who often go unheard. My goal is to elevate these musicians and share their exceptional work with a wider audience.

What are the top things community radio contributes to you?

Building community ties enhances local relationships, fosters cultural exchange, and, above all, cultivates trust among individuals.

When you’re not broadcasting with CRSTL.FM, what are your favorite things to do in St. Louis (or anywhere else)?

I like to spend my time with my beautiful wife Pam. We explore the St. Louis music scene, hit up our favorite restaurants, and attending to our pets.

Do you have any favorite CRSTL.FM programs or DJs? Any other streaming radio stations / programs you enjoy listening to?

For years on 88.1 FM KDHX (RIP), Judy Stein contributed her knowledge and enthusiasm for folk music — especially but not exclusively of the British and American variety — both old and new, traditional and not so traditional, with St. Louis audiences. And as one of the leading forces of the Focal Point, a small, not-for-profit listening room and traditional arts community center in Maplewood (previously in Webster Groves), and decades-long participant in the folk music scene, Judy has truly made her mark on St. Louis culture. If you ever heard the music of Martin Carthy or the Watersons or Norman Blake or Dave Van Ronk or Fairport Convention on the radio in St. Louis you probably have Judy to thank.

One of our goals with launching CRSTL.FM in February 2026 was to reunite many of the finest and longstanding volunteer DJs who were kicked to the curb at KDHX and get them back on air. Just think about it: Art Dwyer, Doug Morgan, Jeff Corbin, Caron House, Ital K, Tim Rakel, Ron Edwards, Tony C, Rob Levy, Kevin Lawrence, and on and on have all returned to broadcasting music for the people of St. Louis and beyond. We’re still pinching ourselves! And while not every DJ has been able to return to virtual airwaves with CRSTL.FM, we were thrilled when Judy agreed to revive Family Reunion on Sunday mornings, 8-10AM Central.

Tell us about your relationship to radio and to music. When did that start?

My relationship to music has been lifelong. I remember songs I heard on the radio probably since I was 2 or 3 years old. People in my family sang songs, nothing rare or collectible but just as a pastime: nursery rhymes to kids, hymns, union songs, pop songs from the radio, etc. There was a policeman in East St Louis where I grew up, head of the Vice squad, Con O’Sullivan, who taught Irish dancing to kids in the neighborhood, and I danced with those kids till I was about 18 or so. I used to skip school and go to the downtown library and listen to records. I went through all the Library of Congress field recordings from WPA days made in the ‘30s. I’m not sure why I settled on that stuff rather than pop music, but I did, and gradually quit listening to the radio very much. I didn’t exactly miss out on the Beatles and those guys, but I wasn’t really into it like my friends in school were. I got a guitar, learned “folksongs” for want of a better word, and played around town with friends at parties and living rooms and such. I did Open Mic nights at the old Focal Point back when it was in Music Folk volunteered at the shows on a regular basis, and found myself running Focal Point in 1983.

Then, the relationship to the station itself began before the station existed: my friends working on it knew I had lots of records, so I began supplying demo tapes to the folks setting up the station in Arnold, back in ‘87. I didn’t have an active role in setting up the station; I had small children and a job; but I did provide test music for them to use: guitar tape, vocal tape, etc. (all cassettes).

What inspired you to apply for a show on KDHX and/or CRSTL.FM?

I didn’t apply, I was asked! It might have been Elliott Ribner who said, “You’ve got lots of records; wanna do a radio show?” Not knowing any better, I said “sure”, and went through the training and met all these cool people, and for the most part all these years, it’s been big fun. Like most of the programmers, I am a shameless music junkie and what with Focal Point demo tapes, the big downtown public library dumping its vinyl only to have it retrieved from the dumpsters by us, my moonlighting job as a record reviewer for Shanachie Records, and a portion of every paycheck spent on music, I did indeed have lots of records! ☺️

How does your relationship to Community Radio St. Louis and community broadcasting relate to anything else in your life?

The radio show itself is another way of making connection with lovely people, gentle anarchists, interesting sounds I hadn’t yet come across on my own, and developing a new skill set. The folks I worked with and the people who used to call in were great: one lady always requested accordion music for her horse and another guy, in prison, used his one allowed phone call to ask for train songs....In other ways, my kids when they were little had a much greater music vocabulary than most kids, and it has served them in different ways: youngest kid, for example, is now a working DJ and in his spare time helps to run Fresh Produce, a sort of contest where aspiring or working producers air their work for each other for cash prizes.

Tell us about your show. What’s the concept? What artists and genres do you play?

It’s called Family Reunion; I believe John Shewmaker came up with the name back at the beginning. He was referring to the way I like finding connections between songs, common themes that seem to stretch across national boundaries; how history and constant use, or ‘wearing down’ of a song can change it over centuries from, for example, a fiery political piece to a nursery rhyme. The artists I choose are multinational, with at least a few St Louis artists in each show. The genre is mostly what people call Folk, but stretches a bit at the edges to include things like reggae or classical, or pop, that derive from traditional songs, or carry a common theme. I don’t place much emphasis on genre, to be honest. I mean, if a band uses electric instruments to play an old traditional song, is that folk or something else? Or if somebody says, “I write all my own songs; I’m a folk singer” what is that performer really? And what do you do with progressive ‘newgrass’ and such: Folk derived? Genre is a trap. 🙃

What are the top things community radio contributes to you?

The best thing about being connected to the radio station is the people! I value the friendships I’ve made through the music and the association with new people. The folks who do the actual work here and at the old place are heroes.

When you’re not broadcasting with CRSTL.FM, what are your favorite things to do in St. Louis (or anywhere else)?

Some of my pastimes are music related: I still handle a few chores for Focal Point; I host a weekly sing at my house; I belong to a morris dance team, and attend the IFDA dances occasionally on Thursday evenings. As far as “in St Louis”-- I am such a big fan of the free stuff we have! I take visitors to the Zoo, the art, history and science museums, and the Botanical Garden.

Do you have any favorite CRSTL.FM programs or DJs? Any other streaming radio stations / programs you enjoy listening to?

To be honest I don’t listen to the radio very much, but I do in the car! Gotta mention Walter and Willa; also Steve St Cyr. And Kate Ryan! And oh my goodness, I could go on forever. I miss John Uhlemann, who did a lovely show, and if you wanna get historical, I should mention the old Brain Sandwich of very early days, with Jay Schober and Jim Findlay. Apart from CRSTL.FM, I listen to NPR for news and “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me.”

What are your five favorite albums of all time?

Unfair question! There are too many. Or rather, there are more favorite songs than there are whole albums. For instance, I like Richard Thompson, but there’s usually at least one or two songs on each album I don’t care for or think they’re not up to his standard-- I used to make car tapes to fix this problem. Nowadays I download albums and just erase the ones I think aren’t good enough.

What album is currently in heavy rotation on your turntable and/or other music delivery device?

For the last few years I’ve been playing a lot of Otava Yo work: they’re a Russian band with very big vocabularies. They have a country fiddler, two classical violinists, a regular drum kit AND a one-man-band percussion setup. There’s a rock lead guitarist, an electric bass, a guy who plays ethnic Russian instruments and highland bagpipes-- They all sing, and their repertoire ranges from Russian folk music to old pop songs to Irish tunes...and all done with masterful video work. I wouldn’t say they’re in heavy rotation, but I try to fit a song or two of theirs in every couple of weeks or so.

Anything else you’d like to tell our readers?

Mainly just HI THERE! I don’t have the expertise to keep up with the chat during the show, but I do like to hear from folks; feel free to ask for songs, and I’ll bring them to play the following week, if I have them.

I love music festivals. For days, the very air you breathe is music. Standing in line, strolling stage to stage, sweating in a portapotty - for several days, every move you make has background/foreground music.

And MATI is a festival like no other. The lens is uniquely St. Louis. Rooted in varying degrees of separation from St. Louis, past and future. The proximity of stages feels more like a field festival than a run of venues. Add the collaboration of local and traveling artists, and it’s a memorable weekend of serendipitous musical experiences, all very St. Louis, and all our own.

Here’s the embarrassment of riches I found at this - my fifth - MATI:

Illphonics: This is how we start it! Songs I know from seeing them at all the good parties.

Mississippi Knights: Listening to Steve Ewing and Brian Owens scat through that brass run on “Sir Duke” was a treat!

Nubya Garcia: On my bucketlist - she did not disappoint. The heat was brutal, but she closed her eyes and blew us into another, cooler dimension.

Spinderella: Hell yeah ‘90s dance party in the street! Delivered by a legend!

Destin Conrad: “Wanna just pop in and see what this is?” Thanks for the suggestion, Max! Smooth as silk and full of love. Buoyant harmonies with the bass player. Best new (to me) find of the weekend.

Zapp: We’re not worthy! Light up suits. Choreography. Wheelie shoes. Wigs. Talk boxES. One of the funkiest moments of my life.

Keyon Harrold: This is what makes MATI so special - superjams throughout the weekend with Harrold as the anchor on trumpet. We caught Tef Poe and AJ McQueen on vocals.

Al Holliday and the East Side River Band: Surely this well-oiled machine of an 8-piece band has the option to be world famous and they’ve just opted to keep it local for us?

Manos Panamerica: My second time seeing them this summer! The dancing is lively, and I’m learning new (to me) singers from them!

The James Turner Six: That slick, Daptone sound, all in black, not a hair or note out of place, just a hint of crooked smile in that soul.

Big Freedia: She commands everything in her orbit with booty shaking self-love. I missed Tootie, but the three dancers we got were exceptional. Tight set.

LA LOM: Glad I could squeeze in one song. Cumbia - this time with air conditioning!

Killer Mike: He was in a reflective mood, and those backup singers took us to church with an entire choir’s worth of range in four-part harmony.

The Motet Plays Jamiroquai: Spent every remaining drop of energy boogieing to some of my fave dance tunes.

Just say the word when it’s MATI time again. I. Am. There.

Concert review: The Black Keys bring Peaches! 🍑 to the Factory, July 19, 2026

The Black Keys brought their Peaches ’n Kream World Tour to The Factory last night, a venue very much unlike the dilapidated General Tire factory in Akron where the band recorded their album Rubber Factory (2004).

As avid record collectors, often spinning at their packed out Record Hangs in clubs along tour stops, their pre-show tunes are ripe with rare grooves, deep cuts, and forgotten classics, like the Incredible Bongo Band’s version of Sandy Nelson’s “Let There Be Drums.”

“Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire,” Auerbach sings as the band rips into the obscure song of the same name from Dallas soul singer-songwriter Willie Griffin. The lyrics feel literal given the wildfires and smoke currently raging across large swaths of the northeastern United States and southern Canada. The hazardous air quality from wildfire smoke caused the band to postpone their Chicago date just days ago as requested by the city.

This tour spans every era of the band and gives fans songs that haven’t been performed in 15+ years alongside revamped takes and a handful of newly released songs from Peaches! The shows on this tour are also among the longest they’ve performed, with sets exceeding two hours on some nights. Joining Dan Auerbach and Pat Carney for this performance were Little Barrie on guitar, Andrew Gabbard on bass, Jimbo Mathus on organ, and Chris St. Hilaire on percussion. Supporting this leg of the tour was Atlanta native Eddie 9V and his band’s searing southern rock and soul.

The story of Peaches! began early last year. The band scheduled time off to be with Dan’s father, Chuck Auerbach, an antique and American folk art dealer, after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. This led to the band calling up Kenny Brown, Jimbo Mathus, and Eric Deaton for a jam session at Easy Eye Studio in Nashville to help alleviate heaviness. They made sure to record those sessions, which included a collection of songs that Dan handpicked, many discovered through collecting 45s over recent years. The band was mostly unfamiliar with the songs and were learning them live in the room, helping them feel displaced from the originals. These sessions were largely a form of catharsis. They hadn’t listened to playback for months as the band toured the No Rain, No Flowers album shortly after Chuck passed. This is when Pat and Dan started mixing what would become Peaches!, their unintended fourteenth studio album released in May.

The photo of the peach stand roof on the album cover was taken by William Eggleston, a Memphis-born (1939) , Mississippi-raised photographer who helped legitimize color photography. Eggleston’s photography was also featured on the album Delta Kream (2021). The album cover is not unlike a scene you’d see just across the Missouri River in Calhoun County, IL during this peach season.

Concert review: Steel Pulse brings the reggae love to the Atomic, July 17, 2026

“The Atomic by Jamo” on Manchester Avenue in Tower Grove was the venue to see Steel Pulse perform on their 50th Anniversary Tour. It had been 20 years since they last visited and performed in St. Louis, so the enthusiasm and anticipation was high. Arriving early at 5pm for their sound check gave me the opportunity to see my close friends for over 44 years warm up their vocals and fine tune their instruments to precise settings with the sound engineer. It was a privilege to hear and observe David Hind’s sharp vocals pierce the atmosphere with such clarity. It caught both myself and Utopia Sound System selector Rankin’ Spence & Amy Harrison’s attention, as we were the guest DJs for this event.

The enthusiastic line grew steadily on Manchester Avenue during sound check time. Later that evening, Drew Jamison, owner at Jamo verified that 900 fans attended. Fans were observed with either a piece of Steel Pulse memorabilia, a drink, or food in their hands enjoying themselves. The Roots Reggae music emanating from Utopia Sound had the crowd, including CRSTL volunteers Isis, Mattie Dread, Kurt Dolan, enthusiastic and ready for “The Handsworth Reviolutionaries” to perform.

“Roller Skates” immediately brought the crowd alive with a loud roar, and they started singing along with David Hinds’s distinctive piercing lead vocals and Selwyn Brown’s complementing harmonies. This set the tone for a night of deep Roots Reggae music. The hits continued with “Handsworth Revolution”, “Soldiers”, “Prodigal Son”, “Heart of Stone”, “Don’t Give In”, “Caught You Dancing”; all with dub sets. Truly captivating. An event that former volunteers Michael Kuelker and DJ-Ranx would’ve attended and enjoyed.

The evening rounded itself out with a live performance from St. Louis’s own versatile Reggae Band, The Smoking Lion Band, plus a special DJ set from Boo Radley with his sound system “Red I Hi-Fi”.

An enjoyable night that patrons had waited 20 years for. David’s last words to the crowd was that “I won’t leave it so long next time”. Those were comforting words to his legion of fans from East St. Louis IL, and St. Louis; who despite being tempted by the entertaining acts performing simultaneously at MATI, came out in very impressive numbers to show that Steel Pulse is well loved in this area.

So you might have heard about this thing called MATI. That’s Music at the Intersection, if you’re just visiting us from Mars or another nearby planet. And with a lineup so packed, what music fan, Martian or otherwise, wouldn’t be interested?

The weekend festival/celebration of groove and jazz and DJ and soul and funk and hip-hop culture in the Grand Center Arts District, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 17, 18, & 19, 2026, has a lot of buzz, but it’s deserved. This year’s lineup is stunning.

The LOVE of CRSTL Substack has been highlighting some of our DJs’ must-see picks, but given the hundreds of performers taking over Grand Center this weekend, I wanted to make room for a few more. And look for CRSTL.FM volunteers and DJs in Grand Center. We’ll be sporting out classic CRSTL.FM t-shirts and have stickers and more for you to grab!

Zapp with Tuxedo

Don’t miss headliners Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One, who perform as Tuxedo, as they join the legendary electro-funk group Zapp, who I am sure have played St. Louis before, but maybe not since the ‘80s. At the Big Top. 9:45PM

Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band

Shreveport-born, New Orleans-trained musician Brian Blade is one of the most prolific and expressive drummers in jazz and rock music. His resume is just this side of infinite, having worked with Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Daniel Lanois, Joshua Redman, Charles Lloyd, Chick Corea, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, and Norah Jones, just to scratch the surface. He’s been leading the Fellowship Band since the ‘90s, and their appearance at Jazz St. Louis on Friday at 8PM will set a high bar for the rest of the weekend.

Take Me to the River Memphis Soul All-Stars

Led by Grammy-winning producer and musician Boo Mitchell, who still runs the Hi Recording studios in Memphis and is the son of Willie Mitchell, this ensemble features legendary Stax singer Carla Thomas, who any fan of Southern soul music is duty bound to see while they can. At the Big Top at 6:30PM.

The James Hunter Six

Smooth, gritty, and always swinging, James Hunter performs R&B in the spirit of his heroes the Five Royales, while adding his own original and effortlessly classic songwriting. It’s been years since I’ve seen him, so I hope to be front and center at the Sovereign on Saturday night at 7:15PM.

LA LOM

The Los Angeles League of Musicians, AKA LA LOM, is led by guitarist Zac Sokolow, bassist Jake Faulkner, and percussionist Nicholas Baker. The trio performs instrumental music that melts together cumbia, Peruvian chicha, ‘60s soul, and even some boleros, and infuses it with a surf guitar soundtrack vibe. At the Sovereign at 9PM.

Keyon Harrold and Andra Day and more

Of course PJ Morton and Wyclef Jean close out MATI 2026 on Sunday night at the Fabulous Fox, but save some energy for Keyon Harrold and Andra Day at 6PM with special guests Aida Ade and Peter Martin and more. This should be a sublime set of jazz soul fusion.

Last month my family, 6 of us, went to Ireland and England. A
monumental trip for this humble DJ with the people I care about the
most. The only time I'd done similar was 26 years ago when my brother
and I went to Dublin.

After I got my practical luggage packed I started on digital packing.
I downloaded 40 gigs of movies, TV shows, books, and music from all my
sources to my iPad. Enough for any media urge I could expect in air
travel to Europe and back. Packed my back up battery, cables, and
adapters too. Ready to go.

The trip was as amazing as you would think. The day I went back to
work I joined some for lunch. They were talking about their first
iPod Mini, hand-me-down iPod Classics, iPod Touch. These digital
natives asked me what my first iPod was. Sensing a chance to
befuddle someone I shared my first digital music player. Hint, it
wasn't an Apple product.

It was a Diamond Rio PMP300.

When they Googled it the evident emoji gasp told me that they had
never considered the idea something existed before an iPod. Of course
one goofball did say, “My Dad loved his Zune.” Yeah. Sure he did.

What manner of revolutionary digital badassness was the device I
carted across the Atlantic? Please allow me…

This was 1999. The device was $200. It had 32 megabytes of internal
hard drive storage. I sprung an extra $50 for a 16mb card. Yep. A
whole 50 smackaroons for storage that wouldn't hold a full jam band
jam. Note that this wasn't 48mb, it was 32+16. Those drives didn’t
share at all. Remember when you could fit a hair over 45 minutes on
one side of a TDK SA90 before that guillotine click? There is zero
give on digital, you had to shave seconds off with a sketchy free
sound editor.

For perspective, my digital packing 26 years ago yielded a whopping 13
song playlist for a two week international trip. Also, it ran on one
AA battery. When I listen to some of those songs now I got right back
to that trip.

It baffled the digital natives on lunch break to think that for a huge
swath of the past 50+ years access to physical media governed what you
could listen to. If you didn't have enough money to go to the record
store, you had to have someone tape it or let you borrow it. Radio,
later MTV, certainly were factors in listening to music, instrumental
in fact. But a record collection is the original "on demand".

I embrace digital for the access. If I want to sing a particular song
in the shower there's no substitute for Spotify, et al. Nothing
changes how much I love the contemplative nature of just sitting there
with a record or cd and nothing else. The physical medium of sliding a
disc into a tray, sipping on a good bourbon, and letting the CD or
record play as it was intended.

What's really cooking my noodle though is how I can listen to that 13
song playlist from 26 years ago and get swept back to that moment.
We've been home for 2 weeks now, and I’m not sure any of the media I
painstakingly selected will have the same meaning as time goes on.

It might, and who knows what I'll be listening to in another 26 years.

PS: Here’s the travel mix from my first digital music player. My job had
just gotten a high speed T1 internet connection and Napster and I
became fast friends. Most of this isn't on streaming though.

Friday July 17th delivers a 1-2 knockout punch of Illphonics at The Big Top and Mississippi Knights at the Sovereign. Illphonics have 2 decades now as pioneers of funky Hip Hop Fusion that flows precise lyricism over a funky, jazzy live band. (Hoping Lamar Harris sits in on trombone!)

Then, the Mississippi Knights get hectic at the Sovereign when Brian Owens has the urge to jump right in with The Steve Ewing Band (Adam Hansbrough, Chris Turnbaugh, Miles Vandiver, Brian Kasmarzik, and Sarah Jones). Individually, Brian and Steve rank among St. Louis’s best front men… But together? This might be THE show of all of MATI.

Speaking of Brian… On Saturday the 18th, The Grandel features a free show called The Soul of St. Louis with Brian Owens, Denise Thimes, The Bosman Twins, Marquise Knox, Anita Jackson, and more directed by Shedrick Mitchell. (Also… The Mitchells’ and the Memphis Soul All Stars are coming. They’re the legends that backed Al Green on his greatest recordings, and they are bringing THE Carla Thomas with them to The Big Top… I’m hoping Brian, who has played and recorded with them and his Dad, will drop in!)

Also on Saturday, the Big Top features the smooth Jazz St. Louis Global Alliance featuring Janet Evra and Claire Maue, and at the Sovereign, Al Holliday & the East Side Rhythm Band will have you grooving and dancing for sure.

Meanwhile at Jazz St. Louis, Blvck Spvde and Friends are joined by Josiah Burton, Dee Jazz, and Coultrain as Blvck Spvde curates four early sets on Saturday. Spvde fuses out there jazz with hip hop poetry and takes your pal Moe to a higher plane. The Brothers Lazaroff live streamed some rehearsals, and ol’ Moe spied ~15 of St. Louis’s best jamming at another level. Brothers Lazaroff themselves appear Sunday the 19th, at a separately ticketed Jazz Brunch at Jazz St. Louis celebrating their new album, “Trying to Make It Home”.

Finally, Sophies has DJs continuously including on Friday - Anansi Spins, Trehitz, Enoch Raavi, Nubya Garcia, and a highly recommended set by Da Fellowship (aka Lamar Harris/DJ Nunes and Scooter Brown – likely both spinning and on their horns). Then Saturday, Trackstar the DJ brings his friends including locals Radic HiFi, DJ Crucial, Biko, Soopaman DJ Speed, DJ Sinamin, DJ Agile One plus national acts Buck Rogers, House Shoes, J.Rocc, and Prince Paul.

The Grand Opening of Uhuru Bakery and Cafe takes place on Saturday, August 15 (12:00 PM – 5:00 PM) at 3719 W. Florissant Ave. in St. Louis. This is a free community event that celebrates African economic growth and food sovereignty. The opening includes live music, food sampling, and historical exhibits.

Be a “Block” head at MATI 2026

Outside the ticketed venues, MATI’s Free Community Block Party is a two-night celebration of hip hop, Latin, folk-rock, and jazz musicians and a danceable deluge of Roller Rink, Hip Hop and Club DJ’s... plus art, theater, fashion, poetry, and kids events.

Bring your “crazy legs” and rollerskate down Washington Street with Documentarian and DJ Gee Wiz on July 17th and 18th. Wiz’s film, “The Rink ‘It’s a Way of Life’”, captured the rich history of St. Louis and East St. Louis skate culture, and he’s curated a host of legendary rink DJ’s -- DJ Tone, Dr. Philgood, DJ Sha’vierre, DJ Lady Jock, DJ Bounce, Soopaman DJ Speed, DJ Soundz, DJ Nasty Nino, and DJ Kut – to keep you rolling.

National DJ’s Spinderella and Natasha Diggs headline the Theresa stage on Friday. Spinderella pushed Salt n’ Pepa “real good” and brings a party full of hiphop and funk. Natasha Diggs sets a groovable mood and is known as the 45 Queen when she spins vinyl. Diggs is a featured remix artist for acts like Khruangbin and Blaze. Then, Saturday, it’s a St. Louis circus disco rave event as Nightchaser presents Le Freque Cirque with House of Tucci, Icesis Couture, Jojo, and Mark Lewis.

St. Louis bands open the Theresa Stage from 5-7:30 both nights. Friday, the Kendrick Smith Quartet opens the night. Hailing from East St. Louis, Kendrick is a saxophone storyteller whose classic jazz quartet echoes the greats of the 50’s and 60’s.

Paint Louis then presents R.O.T.N., a hip hop super group of Daemon, Rec Riddles, and Supreme Sol. Daemon’s recent releases “Euphonic” and his Trackstar the DJ collab “KillJoy” dominated my ears this year. When paired with Rec Riddles’s devastating NJxSTL lyrical intensity and Supreme Sol’s frantic, rapid fire flow, the R.O.T.N. collective triples each individual’s live energy.

The Pernikoff Brothers take a break from opening for the Gin Blossoms to get Saturday going. Their quiet Americana sound swirls with earnest passion and bittersweet harmonies. They are followed by Manos PanAmerica, a danceable 7 member Latin Fusion band, who mix Latin American instruments and rhythms to bridge the culture gap between the Americas.

The rest of the Block Party includes GENT’s Fashion show, Circus Harmony, Poetry in Motion, Frizzy By Nature’s artisan and food market, Art curated by Kris Blackmon, and the musical, “Betsey Brown.”

CRSTL Volunteer Spotlight: Isis Ain - The Lioness I of Reggae Song’bration

Reggae music is truly one of the musical foundations of community radio around the world, and in St. Louis of course. CRSTL.FM is proud to present the long-running shows Ital Rhythms on Friday nights 7-9PM Central and Positive Vibrations every Saturday 9-11PM. This past march we added another reggae program to our schedule: Reggae Song’bration with new host Isis Ain - The Lioness I.

Tell us about your relationship to radio and to music. When did that start?

Radio and Music has been a big part of my life since I was a child. My Father with his brothers and sisters played bass guitar/electric guitar/keyboards/drums and were amazing singers. My Mother and aunts would make up dances, and it was very much like watching a live show at home. My Mother worked at Famous Barr downtown on the 6th floor in the Record Store/Department, and when that department closed she moved to Electronics. We had all the latest (at that time, now classic) albums, 8-tracks, & cassettes of all music genres and soundtracks. My Maternal Grandmother & Great Grandparents loved Jazz and Classical music, so WSIE and 99.1 Classics were music staples in their cars & homes. As a teen, KHTR and Majic 108 FM were my go to radio stations. So I developed an ear for all types of music. In my high school years is when I first heard of KDHX. A DJ was playing Depeche Mode and The Smiths, and not just their popular songs but songs the other stations were not playing. Over the years I became familiar with the concept of community radio, became a full time listener, and a supporting member.

What inspired you to apply for a show on CRSTL.FM?

I always wanted to be a DJ, but was a pure workaholic who enjoyed the awesome community DJs that provided the soundtrack to my nights and days. I called and talked to the DJ’s on the phone during their shows, emailed and left messages on the old stations message board, chatted with them on social media during their live broadcast, danced with them at concerts, and attended their live DJ spins. When listening to my favorite DJ’s on the radio was no longer an option, I created playlists on streaming apps based on music I heard on their shows. I remained in communications with Ital-K, Glenda Volk, Prof. Skank, DJ Michael Kuelker, DJ Ranx and a few other DJ’s on social media, and followed along with LOVE of KDHX.

During the past few years the St. Louis radio community and Reggae community were saddened by the transitionings of DJ Michael Kuelker in 2023, DJ Ranx in 2025, and Mr. Roots this past March of 2026. These three men were unique Reggae voices with distinct styles that are truly missed. Once it was announced that CRSTL.FM was launching, I immediately contacted Ital K and asked him how do I get involved as a DJ. I am inspired to continue the sound of Reggae in the St. Louis broadcasting area.

How does your relationship to Community Radio St. Louis and community broadcasting relate to anything else in your life?

I enjoy the platform that Community Radio St. Louis offers to its members, supporters, local business, local artist, volunteers, partners, and DJs. The dedication that goes into successfully bringing a media source to a diverse community that wants it is nothing to shake a stick at. As a first time DJ I enjoy sharing music through broadcasting, being resourceful at events, and introducing CRSTL.FM to potential new listeners.

Tell us about your show Reggae Song’bration. What’s the concept? What artists and genres do you play?

Reggae Song’bration is a celebration of different reggae styles from around the world with a focus on Conscious Roots and Roots friendly reggae. I feature Lovers Rock, Rub A Dub, Dub, Ragga, and a bit of Dancehall. My playlist is curated to build a narrative around a theme that I carry throughout the show. You will hear new tunes and classics from Midnite, Akae Beka, Jah9, Bunny Wailer, Burning Spear, Reemah, Buju Banton, Proteje, Lila Ike, Bob Marley, and more.

What are the top things community radio contributes to you?

Community Radio contributes to me the opportunity to learn & enjoy something new, be social, share my kindness, and share good music to the community.

When you’re not broadcasting with CRSTL.FM, what are your favorite things to do in St. Louis (or anywhere else)?

When not broadcasting with CRSTL.FM, I enjoy listening to and finding new music, reading or listening to audio books (Enoch, Emerald Tablets, etc.).

Do you have any favorite CRSTL.FM programs or DJs? Any other streaming radio stations / programs you enjoy listening to?

I enjoy all the DJs and shows, and listen to whatever is on when I have the opportunity. I have gotten back into the groove of listening to Ital-K live on Friday nights & Positive Vibrations (Prof. Skank & Matty Dread) live on Saturday nights. Juxtaposition (Rob Levy) is also one of my all time faves that I have gotten reacquainted with live on a weekly basis. Herencia Latina (Lydia), Latin Hemisphere (Carlos), The Bridge (DJ Whiz), Beyon’Cray (Crim), and Dangerous Curves (Sherri Danger) are my new work faves. I really enjoy interacting with everyone in the chat.

I still enjoy WSIE - The Sound 88.7 for jazz with my Grandmother.

Darren Snow has been spinning records for the community, both as a club/bar DJ and as a radio host, for decades. He is a true popular music lover. Listeners of CRSTL.FM will remember him as the longtime host of Rocket 88, a sublimely eclectic program that captured the spirit of rock & roll community radio: progressive, unpretentious, informed, good-humored, locally inspired, and a whole lot of fun.

Darren has rejoined many of his KDHX colleagues at CRSTL.FM, hosting the new show Hey Hey My My, every Tuesday 10AM-Noon. Check out his most recent playlists and listen to the most recent episode on Mixcloud. Thanks to Darren for taking the time to re-introduce himself!

Tell us about your relationship to radio and to music. When did that start?

I started paying attention to the radio around 1978, when St. Louis had a pretty adventurous Top 40 station that played some new wave along with the R&B/disco and pop-rock that was generally pretty high-quality in those days and appealed to adults as well as young people: Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, Steely Dan, and so on. I don’t know if mainstream pop has ever seemed so smart and fun and stylistically diverse since the late ‘70s. Discovering college radio was an important step, and DJing at KCFV (the St. Louis Community College station) gave me direct access to a whole world of new, exciting music.

What inspired you to apply for a show on KDHX and/or CRSTL.FM?

I really enjoyed reading music journalism, and I wrote (not necessarily very well) for Jet Lag when Steve Pick was the editor. When he started DJing at KDHX, he suggested that I do so as well. I started in ‘92 or ‘93 and stayed until the end.

How does your relationship to CRSTL and to community broadcasting relate to anything else in your life?

Almost everything in my adult life has been somehow related to community broadcasting: I worked in music retail for years, which dovetailed nicely with radio; I DJ’d and programmed music for restaurant and bar owners who enjoyed what I played on KDHX; the three most important relationships in my life started with the request lines or in the offices of KDHX and KCFV. When KDHX ended, I didn’t know how to listen to music anymore. For forty years, anytime I liked a song I had been able to share it with other people via radio; now things were just flowing into my ears and stopping there, and that made me feel disconnected and sad because a huge part of enjoying music for me was the ability to pass it on. With CRSTL and “Hey Hey My My,” everything feels connected again, and that’s why I started my first show with a song called “It’s Great to Be Here!”

Tell us about your show Hey Hey My My. What’s the concept? What artists and genres do you play?

I think of it as a ‘70s-style Top 40 station from an alternate universe where the playing field is level and all rock, pop and R&B artists, no matter the size of the label they’re on, get on the air as long as the songs are really good in one or more ways. But rather than shuffling genres, I have a tendency to play a cluster of garage rock, a cluster of synth-pop, a cluster of retro-soul, etc., just because it’s fun to make connections between records that are stylistically-related and to keep a particular vibe going for four or five songs. I seek out new artists voraciously, and I mix them in with “legacy acts” that continue to inspire new bands: Dylan, Costello, the Stones, Pretenders, Wilco, Talking Heads...It’s a mix I think at least three generations can potentially enjoy.

What are the top things community radio contributes to you?

Oh, boy. With CRSTL, I feel back in touch with the musicians and the local venues again! Maybe more than ever before. Like the song says, you don’t miss your water till the well runs dry--and I think the temporary absence of a community-based music outlet re-energized the whole local music scene when the possibility of a rebirth became closer and closer to reality. Everything from social media to residual COVID-funk to politics to just plain gettin’ older has made it harder to make friends or even have conversations with strangers. CRSTL connects people, and we’re just getting started!

When you’re not broadcasting with CRSTL.FM, what are your favorite things to do in St. Louis (or anywhere else)?

At home, I’ve been catching up with decades’ worth of movies when I’m not listening to music. Around town, it seems there’s always a new restaurant or bar or band to check out. And traveling around the country with my partner is a joy; if she didn’t keep it all in a spreadsheet I’d have trouble remembering which town had which great museum or which fantastic brewery or which architectural marvel. There’s just so much to see and do.

Do you have any favorite CRSTL.FM programs or DJs? Any other streaming radio stations / programs you enjoy listening to?

On CRSTL, I appreciate the love of local music and the general enthusiasm Moe Fuz brings. He’s a great addition. And there’s a series of DJs on Thursdays--John Wendland, Rich Reese, Dr. Jeff, and Doug--that all hit me in different parts of my sweet spot. During the Year Without Community Radio, I learned to love Chirp Radio out of Chicago and KKFI in Kansas City. They’re like our sisters and brothers from another mother.

Hometown Horn Hero, Keyon Harrold, returns for MATI 2026

At the first Music At The Intersection in 2021, I’ll never forget St. Louis bassist Tonina opening for Lee Fields and Roy Ayers at The Fabulous Fox. That stunning performance launched her on a trajectory that finds her playing Montreux Jazz Festival this year.

Fast forward to 2026, and MATI continues to focus on St. Louis’ best and brightest starting with 2026 Artist-in-Residence, Keyon Harrold.

As a Ferguson, MO teenager, Keyon Harrold learned from the great trumpeters who headlined at Jazz St. Louis. Eventually, he studied in New York, joined Common’s live band, and served as Jazz St. Louis’ Creative Advisor. He’s released 3 albums, been nominated for multiple Grammys, played the live trumpet in Miles Ahead, and has been featured with Beyonce, Anthony Hamilton, JAY-Z, John Legend, Mary J. Blige, Maxwell, PJ Morton, Gregory Porter, and Joss Stone.

On Friday, July 17th, Keyon brings Rapsody, AJ McQueen, Tef Poe, and DJ Charlie Chan together. DJ Charlie Chan laid St. Louis’s hip hop foundation and is now Run DMC’s live DJ after Jam Master Jay’s passing, and Tef Poe is one of St. Louis’s finest emcees through legendary rap battles, activism, and recent work with Talib Kweli. Rapsody and AJ McQueen are icing on that cake. AJ McQueen, whose roots also trace to St. Louis, is a captivating emcee, author, and entrepreneur, and Rapsody, a North Carolina talent, is a personal favorite and won a Grammy in 2025 for “3:AM” with Erykah Badu. Who knows what they will cook up!

Then, on Sunday the 19th, Keyon joins “Rise Up” singer Andra Day at the Fox with headliners Wyclef Jean, PJ Morton, and Artist-At-Large Chris Dave. But, as with Tonina in 2021, I’m focused on Sunday’s openers: St. Louis’s own Peter Martin, Sir Eddie C, and Aida Ade. Peter Martin, one of St. Louis’s best jazz pianists, is the founder of Open Studio Jazz and has worked with the likes of Dianne Reeves, Wynton Marsalis, and another St. Louis MATI performer, Brian Owens. Sir Eddie C is a Hip Hop goofball whose live band is a serious funk force of nature, and Aida Ade is a soulful singer-songwriter who effortlessly slides from modern R&B to acoustic, soul baring, solo pieces with her guitar and viola.

Sir Eddie C and Aida Ade are two talents I loved at prior MATI’s when they performed on side stages and the Walls Off Washington alley, and I can’t wait to see them elevated in the spotlight at the Fox Theater this year.

Music is Magic: Kozi Fest comes to Benton Park

This Saturday, June 27, Community Radio STL welcomes a new music and arts festival to our cultural scene. Kozi Fest invites all ages to Benton Park from noon to 8 pm for a free celebration of local creativity.

“Music is magic! It empowers and heals,” says Rachel Kozinski, singer-songwriter and festival organizer. Kozi Fest features Rachel is Kozi, her band, and welcomes Boxcar, Suzie Cue Scotty & the Future, Harpo Jarvi, and Brassy McBrassFace.

We caught up with Rachel in this pre-fest interview. See you at the park this weekend!

Why create a new festival – in Benton Park?

My bandmates and I have been in the St. Louis music scene most of our lives. We’ve been touring with our first album, Lifecycles. Every time we go to a new place, we realize how much we love St. Louis! Our music is our way to heal, to lift people up. A festival pulls it all together, for everyone who comes.

Everyone in this festival shares a passion for their craft, love of the St. Louis music scene, and the commitment to share that love with audiences. Kozi Fest is a celebration with local music, art, business and food friends - for our whole community.

Everyone in our band lives in South St. Louis. Benton Park is a beautiful city neighborhood, with history and today’s amenities. Neighborhood leaders are great to work with: the neighborhood association, Alderperson Jami Cox Antwi, and Parks Department folks. Benton Park itself has all the beauty of bigger parks in an intimate outdoor space.

Music and art bring us together. Our band wanted to create a space for people come get their souls filled up and then continue on their way. The daytime hours for Kozi Fest especially welcome families!

And what’s the kinship, Rachel, with Community Radio STL in this new event?

Volunteers launching a new community radio station is a huge victory. We’re so excited to host CRSTL DJs, to give CRSTL volunteers the space to turn more people on to this amazing hub of creativity for St. Louis, and beyond.

Mill Creek: Black Metropolis explores the rich history of a St. Louis neighborhood that historians have likened to New York’s legendary Harlem. It was the home of St. Louis’s major Black newspapers, the offices of numerous Black professionals, a center of social activism, and the birthplace of ragtime. All this richness thrived amid and despite racial segregation, providing African Americans common ground and the refuge from the daily slights and indignities of a stark color divide in 20th-century St. Louis.
