Below is the story of how it all happened. Beyond my Garcia (Remixed) releases, I make a ton of edits for each Dead House set I play. Franklin’s Tower was one of the first ones I made after nerding out with my dad over the lyrics (Robert Hunter broke down the meaning of this song intentionally waiting a long long time to do so because wanted people to take whatever they needed from it, but when he did break it down in “The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics: The Collected Lyrics of Robert Hunter and John Barlow” holy hell it will bend your mind.) For me, what initially grabbed me where these lines:

I’ll Tell you where the four winds dwell
In Franklin’s tower there hangs a bell
It can ring, turn night to day
It can ring like fire when you lose your way

cause boy oh boy does does that bell ring when I lose my way…

In 2023 I had the honor of being asked to Reimagine Jerry Garcia’s first album for the 60th anniversary of the release. I’ll never forget the phone call from my one of my manger’s Ben Baruch and Marc Allan at Red Light Management (who works with Trixie Garcia on the Garcia Estate) asking if I would be interested in remixing Garcia. I said yes, started crying and immediately called my parents to share the news with them where more tears of joy ensued.

It was a long strange trip to receiving that phone call. During the pandemic, when I was streaming on twitch, I was really missing my parents and decided to bring in a musical nod to them knowing they were watching. I isolated the guitar from China Cat Sunflower and re-warped it and wove it in and out of a house track in the same key. Children of Dead Head’s (which is a tribe I am honored to be a part of) started messaging me that they were so excited to hear their parents music in the context of their music. It made me feel so connected during such a disconnected time. I started leaving one DJ deck for percussion loops, one for accapellas and one for instrumental loops. I then keyed all the tracks so I could improvise on top of them on the piano and weave them together in different ways. I started thinking of myself as a one woman jam band behind the decks. This turned out to be the beginning of my Dead House set.

As an electronic artist when I first begin a remix, I always listen to just the vocal in isolation to hear what ideas may pop up around it. When I began working on this project and listening to Jerry’s isolated voice, it really felt like I was listening to a family member’s voice. I was raised by DeadHeads who were always playing his music and The Grateful Dead in our house growing up. I felt so connected to my childhood and my parents through this process. I have always been in awe of his music and what he created, but getting to hear the guitar parts isolated and study the chord changes gave me a whole new appreciation for his creativity and talent.

After releasing this album, I received more hate than I saw coming. The saddest part, to me, was for my parents. They had raised me in this community and I was mostly worried about how that would effect them. So I want it to be so clear that these songs cannot be made better. That’s not what a remix is; it’s just a reimagining and its a huge part of dance culture. When I think of Jerry, I think of his voice and his guitar, so I worked to put those elements in every bed of music I made for these songs. When I was creating these tracks, I was creating them to pay homage to and respect to the thing most important to my musical upbringing. I also wanted to show this beautiful world to my community (the electronic music community) that might not know the Dead. I understand now why this really pissed people off, but the positivity has always outweighed the negative. And this was something I wanted to do to connect even more with my parents - which will always be the factor that trumps anything else.

After playing an after party at Dead and Company’s festival Playing in the Sand, I had a father and son come up to me and give me one of the greatest gifts I can be given as an artist. The dad told me he wanted his son to come to Playing in the Sand and the son agreed he would only if his dad would then go to my show after. He said it was the first time they had really connected on music and shared such a joyous concert experience together. Family means everything to me so having any part of bringing them together is a true honor and humbling gift.

I’ll never forget the first time I took my parents to a rave. My dad turned to me and he said “if I was born now I would be a raver instead of a hippy – there are so many throughlines! The idea of unity, love, being part of something greater than yourself on the dance floor, the journey the DJ takes you on being different every night being woven together through the non stop beat… you know the Dead called themselves a dance band!” That really clicked for me.

Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead created shockwaves that changed the face of music including how I approach and relate to electronic dance music, for sometimes you get shown the light in strangest of places if you look at it right.

Endless gratitude for all the joy that band brought to my family.

A subscription will come with:

· This Franklin’s Tower (Dead House Edit)

· Poetry written by my dad and I

· An honest note about the road, how I felt about the set, any random thoughts

· An Annotated Archive- the free set but tagged / searchable: by mood, city, the use of an edit or accapella etc.

You Get a Limited Amount of Time

Full set from Montauk at The Surf Lodge, plus the poem written with my dad before the shows + a personal note from me

LP's Picks by LP Giobbi

LP Giobbi at The Surf Lodge, NY

Listen to the full mix from my set at the Surf Lodge in Montauk, NY

This post has bonus content for paid subscribers.
