My first post on the subject really lit a fire in me. So now I’ll be sharing all my summer travels on here, small and large (cue trip to Korea/China early September).

I only meant to write one or two as proof-of-concept for The Lucite Vision Travel Dossier but here we are:

Last we left off, we were still in Nice and transitioning into la fin de semaine. Feel free to get caught up or jump right in here (who doesn’t want to be transported to the South of France for the weekend??)

Friday 7/3/26:

I’m up and at ‘em early for a meeting with a friend that ultimately falls through. Now with a free morning, I made my way over to Pâtisserie La Maison de Celine. I learned about this patisserie via TikTok. I felt like I was back in NYC waiting in a line with plenty of other Americans. It was hot and there was no relief from the sun. I’m immediately reminded why I rarely seek out recommendations on there anymore. Once inside I ordered two pastries and a green tea. I took them up the spiral staircase to eat at a table by the window.

These were buttery, flakey and I could taste the fresh vanilla in the pastry cream. Just lovely. I had some quiet time catching up on different group chats, listening to voice memos and zooming in on photos sent by family. Of course I touched down on the Taylor Swift wedding speculation as well. I checked my email and was delighted to find an invite to the Office Party. This admin hour was going swimmingly.

I don’t think the pastries or ambiance were substantially better than others I’ve had this trip, but it was nice to have some one-on-one time with moi. I could have found an equally charming cafe or patisserie without a line if I had given it a little more effort. Oh well. I ate half of each pastry and saved the rest for bae.

I walked around and popped into a few shops post pastry. I got a new claw clip at the pharmacie and enjoyed looking at all the goodies at Zimmerman. My eye was drawn to this fabulous poncho and this cheery straw hat in particular.

Since we all know I don’t have Zimmerman money à l’heure actuelle, I head to McDonald’s to get an iced coffee and cheeseburger for the inevitably hungover hubby. He wants to have a reset/indoor day while the rest of us go to Plage de la Mala. I honestly respect that, and am impressed that he hung with the adventure, heat and outdoor time as much as he did. He describes himself as a house cat and as a Taurus, we all know that is 100% true.

Plage de la Mala came up in my research when I was looking to emulate the natural beauty of the beaches of Milos, Greece. I was intrigued by the cliff walk and cove-like scene from poking around on Google Earth.

After being spoiled at beach clubs and catamarans, bestie, GTB (groom to be) and myself thought it would be a nice change of pace to rough it like locals with just towels on the sand. Hubby preferred the AC and room service of the Alber 1er. To each their own!

We took the train, as coordinated by GTB, and got off at Cap d'Ail. After resisting temptation for the sign pointing to “Savage Garden” we made our way through a tunnel under the train and to the cliff walk. It was indeed the right level of adventure, views and a wee bit of danger. We did the towels-on-the-sand thing. Luckily the beach is equipped with drinking water (so glad I brought my insulated water bottle) but sadly no shade. I listen to a bit of my favorite podcast and imagined what it be like to live in each of the homes carved into the cliffside. After only twenty short minutes c’est nécessaire to cool off in the water. The area we were in, in addition to a sandy beach, had a net to keep jellyfish out of the swimming area. This was a nice consideration and made for an easy place to perch on to Yap.

So, I must confess, we didn’t really last as locals. The heat and sun were extreme and after about an hour we made our way to the one restaurant for reprieve under an umbrella.

The prices were the highest of anywhere we’d been including Michelin starred places. Location location location baby. I turned off the part of my brain that got me through Q1 and ordered a mojito and the best salad I’ve had this whole trip. While on the topic of salads, be warned anything labeled a caesar salad is anything but that in France.

This lavish lunch worked out because we missed the hottest point of the day. It was good to chat, and the topic was my favorite weddings. Specifically invites and wedding website. and I are going to post about this later this month. In the meantime be sure to check out her post:

After lunch we made our way to the other side of the beach which was rocks instead of sand. The lower sun made the water glitter and we swam and laughed in the sparkles. We got The Shot™️ without hubby. Bestie stepping up to the plate!

Plage de la Mala is so beautiful and a very cool vibe. If you are traveling to the South of France, be sure to add it to the itinerary. The happy couple took turns snorkeling. I flopped around in the twinkling water. While laying on the warm rocks, I was able to eavesdrop an a squad of American men dishing a about Fire Island share-house drama. They were starting to compete with my podcast tbh! I remember when I returned to the U.S. after my Summer in France, my brain lit up on the train from the airport. I could follow all these ambient conversations again! Getting a window into all these different lives made my head swirl in a good way. I realized it was something I was deprived of for months. Maybe it helped me focus on myself, or not care what others thought. Either way it really did shift something in my psyche (before affordable noise-canceling headphones). The beach cleared out, and after witnessing a Mr. Darcy-like romantic gesture (GTB walking Besties sandals to her through the painful pebbles) we headed back to the train via the cliff walk. The walk back is splendid, captured in the video snippet:

Back in Nice we gathered up pizzas, wine and hubby for a casual seaside picnic. I wore an orange silk vintage scarf on my head. Little did I know it would be the summer of orange. Later that month I would see also rocking an orange headscarf at the Substack Office Party. I love scarves and I’ve added some fab vintage options to this post’s ShopMy so have a look if you are feeling inspired to also be an orange headscarf girlie too.

In summer(y), today we were basically locals — with the exception of the $100 salad.

Saturday 7/4/26:

Happy Saturday! It’s our last full day in Nice so I get my beloved Louise les Glaces for breakfast. Coconut and Mango. It’s divine. I enjoy it as we walk along the water front to Castel Plage Beach Club.

They are stricter here: no outside food, drink or reentries. I enjoy my remaining cone in the sun as we look down below and spot Bestie and GTB on the sun beds closest to the fence and the water.

We enter the buzzing metropolis carved into the cliff. We get towels and hubby buys me a lobster shaped claw clip. I put my hair up with it as we walk through the expansive restaurant to our spot by the water. The beach is pebbles and there is a cleverly rigged support rope to help swimmers in and out of the water. I’m so grateful I remember my water shoes. I settle in with a drink that looks like the Irish Flag. What a great morning.

Bestie and Hubby gossip animatedly. I’m looking at paparazzi photos of guests from Taylor Swift’s wedding. I’m so confused by this dress code, and why these people called Backgrid to show off their terrible understanding of said dress code.

I swim in the cool waters and it feels amazing. The steep drop off is actually ideal for someone who just wants to be instantly buoyant. I go back to land and grab my 360 snorkel to follow around a school of silvery fish. After a few hours of parallel play, we start to think about lunch. I decide to take my self to the restroom and in the process, complete a lap around the restaurant. I want to see what everyone is enjoying. The air smells of butter and truffle. I spy-with-my-little-eye many plates of whole lobster and linguini. The burgers look especially good as do some sort of flat wide noodle dish.

Ripe with intel I come back to the group. There is discussion around the few (but most desirable) cliff side tables. It’s 2pm and we may have a shot. I remember seeing this from a far on our first day and thinking it looked like a Bond Villain Lair. We decide to try our luck.

Turns out this is a separate restaurant called Les Bains du Castel. They can fit us in waterside. YAY!

Unfortunately the menu is completely different and all my recon was inutile. Bestie and I cobble together a mix of share plates and appetizers that end up being the best meal of the trip. So it ends up being a blessing that we couldn’t order a burger even if we wanted to. I was on cloud nine switching from bites of truffle pasta, watermelon salad and octopus to take any photos. I enjoyed a Coke Zero and then a glass of Rosé as the conversation developed into a discussion of celebrity Hall Passes which was especially fun.

The only downsides of this lunch 1). I realize my nails were officially fucked 2). We are asked to leave at 4pm as they close until 7pm dinner service.

On the way out, I make my way through the (stunning) cave interior to use the restroom. The bar and indoor set up is very cool. I could honestly have spent all day at this restaurant it was so fun. Another spot I highly recommend!

I dropped my bag and coverup back at our sun beds and head into the water. I’m having the best time splashing around with hubby, reflecting on how lovely it is to be alive when I spy two German Shepherds1 camped out near our belongings.

Talk about an emotional 180. I worry if I have some sort of weapon or illicit substance (an irrational thought) in my bag. I wonder what my life will be like in French Prison. Hubby explained we should just go chat with them, which is a more rational response than mentally picking the top or bottom bunk.

We meet Shadow and the other one (sorry I forgot his name!) They’re job is to guard the Beach Club at night. They are so dang cute and gentle, though I’m sure if you meet them at 2am it’s a different story.

Feeling grateful to have escaped being featured on Locked Up Abroad, I’m not even devastated to learn the club closes at 6pm. Hubby leads the way to a hike to a look-out-point and waterfall (Cascade du Château).

We attempt the elevator (since we are in our bathing suits with all our beach stuff) but it is out of service so we make our way up alllll the steps. As someone who lives in a fourth floor (or fifth, depending on how you count) walk up, I am no stranger to stairs. However these ones are in the direct sun which, turns out, makes a big difference.

It feels good to reach Point de vue Colline du Château. There is live music and I get a great film photo to capture this Odyssey. Speaking of, if you had told 16 year old Lucy in 2006 reading the original latin text, this would be all anyone would be talking about August of 2026 she’d laugh at you. The only constant is change people, and I guess ancient latin texts.

After another million stairs I get my second ice cream of the day at Comptoir des Anges. There is a playground and clear view of a parking lot. So this place is easy to drive to? Hein?!

Refueled, we finish up the hike and end up at the waterfall. I don’t have photo evidence (tried to capture it unsuccessfully on film) but it was quite nice. The mist cooled us off, and the smell reminded me of Universal Studios — our second honeymoon destination.

The journey down was easier knowing what was to come. Seeing people ascend with strollers made me feel grateful for my own autonomy.

Back at the hotel we packed up our belongings which was both hard (how was everything everywhere??) and depressing. I took my time as to stay in a state of denial. With restaurants closing soon, I was snapped back into reality. We made our way to the old city with the serenade of horns and screams as Morocco just won their FIFA World Cup round 16 match.

We tried the local delicacy Socca, enjoyed outside with beers at Chez Rene Socca. At the end of the night we exchanged heartfelt goodbyes to our travel companions, as we were going our separate ways in the morning.

Sunday 7/5/26:

Debout, debout! It’s time to pack the final items like my electric toothbrush, Kindle and makeup bag and head down to the lobby. It’s a relief we are going by train, so no need to be obsessive about liquids or bag weight. We checked out of the Albert 1er, which ended up being a perfect home base for the past week. There were a few hiccups (scam WhatsApps months prior and the initial flop room) but the location and amenities (air con) were fabulous. I never had their breakfast, so I can’t vouch for that.

The transportation to the train station was a sprinter van with twinkle lights in the ceiling. Sadly wasted on a 7 minute drive for just me and hubby, but it was fun nonetheless. At the station we got more FIFA novelty chips and sandwiches. I write about my love of turkey sandwiches in my latest post. Though I am not tracking my protein on this trip (it’s a vacation from all things) a travel turkey sandwich is just second nature and I think I crave it as a Pavlovian response at this point.

We board the fast daytime train back to Paris. Months back, I sprung for first class and booked us seats on the upper level in hopes of enjoying the countryside views. Due to the heatwave the window screens remained down, so the sliver of scenery is all we get.

I have to be honest, I much preferred this to the Night Train we took to Nice. I liked eating my sandwich at a table. I enjoyed the 1980’s interior. Voices and activity were low and I had complete focus to work on my writing. This is where I drafted Lessons from a Medium Spend Q2 and it felt good to have some introspective time.

When people ask me about the heatwave in Paris, I explain you feel it most in the tight unventilated toilet spaces. On this train ride I somehow locked myself in the bathroom and nearly had a full on panic attack. I find myself more claustrophobic as I get older. Maybe it’s the hundreds of animated cave diving videos I’ve watched. I have more tools to calm myself down, but I definitely get freaked out faster. That being said, I completeed two MRI’s in Q2 and was completely fine for those, which I am reminded of as I look back on the quarter for my post.

It’s fun to follow our journey on Google maps as the (hardly visible) scenery changes. I hope someday to be back and see more of France. The six hours fly by and before we know it we are back at Gare de Lyon.

A nice thing I’ve observed in France, they let families with small children move to the front of the Taxi queue. This works well for everyone as I have no interest standing next to a bored child for 20 minutes. The queue, in addition to being children-first, is organized and civil. I can’t always say that about Penn or Grand Central Station in NY. The ride is quick and soon we are at our final hotel: La Fantaisie.

I booked this for our final night using my $300 Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) semi-annual credit. We used this same credit for a staycation in January, and though it doesn’t cover the whole amount, it feels indulgent and special. We booked the most luxe hotel on our last night in Ireland too, and it’s a great note to leave on. Also, loading up on a premium breakfast buffet before a day of travel is elite.

When deciding between which Fine Hotels to choose from, I was drawn to La Fantaisie because of the maximalist decor and the beautiful spa. Everyone was so kind and welcoming upon check-in. The hotel staff even walked us down a beautifully wallpapered corridor to the (upgraded) room.

Though cozy, I enjoyed all the interior design choices from mirrored built-ins to the border details on the bedding. There was a welcome note with baked treats and artisanal juices. Chic!

I booked a table at ChoCho (recommended by my dad’s bestie) as we didn’t have that kind of meal on the trip yet. As I was changing into my floral one piece, (to match the signature hotel prints) they dropped off eye masks. I wish I could afford to stay here for a whole weekend. Maybe someday I’ll be back, in my Zimmerman poncho and of course matching pants to enjoy three nights solo. A girl can dream <3

In my suit, robe and slippers I made my way to the spa. Since I was on my own, I used that time to think about my future and listen to myself. I read an inspiring post on here that put in to words how I’ve been feeling lately. You can call it manifestation or whatever you want, but I spent this spa time listening to my inner voice and imagining my ideal future. It doesn’t hurt to call in prosperity and name the things you want while in the spa, something I’ve picked up from friend Lyndsey Marko.

I spent an hour and a half of rotating between sauna, steam room, hot tub, cold plunge and pool all while drinking tons of citrus infused spa-water. I felt brand new and headed upstairs to change for a pre-dinner drink. I do my make up, I put on this lacy dress, and throw my lipstick in my mini rosetta bag. I love that it fits just what I need (phone/cards/cosmetics) while remaining very small with no visible branding. I have it in Lipstick Red, and always regret not purchasing it in Cream when I saw it at this underrated consignment shop.

The journey to the roof top bar is a simple elevator ride. The Amex deal also comes with a $100 credit that can be used for room service, on site dining or spa (no massages were available, I checked) so I was excited to have this pro bono happy hour.

The space itself was gorgeous with beautiful roof garden and floral wallpaper on the ceiling. This would be such a chic place to host a private party. Unfortunately they were not able to seat us outside (despite open seats, and explaining we were leaving for dinner in an hour). It took forever for them to take our order and an eternity for the drinks and small plates to come. My drink was undrinkably spicy. I asked for a glass of rosé and l’addition S’il vous plaît when we finally got our drinks. Still that lagged. This is a beautiful space but has awful service. Do not recommend, even if free — which says a lot.

We made our way to ChoCho. The vibes were cool. High ceilings with minimal decor and stylish-without-trying patrons and staff. I felt a little overdressed, or rather missing the mark, in a sexy LBD. Hubby was striking a better balance of casual cool in his embroidered shirt from the Philippines. The great service was such a welcome shift. Some dishes were absolute stand outs (the lamb), some things were not our taste (marshmallow nougat final course). I loved the funky natural wine paired with the adventurous combos. I started feeling SO sleepy around course three of five. I don’t know why I always do this to myself with coursed dining. I started to have flash backs to the eleven course tasting menu in Athens. I booked it on our (arrival) travel day. The whole group was deliriously tired by course seven. We still laugh about it to this day, the dinner that literally never ended.

With the bill paid, and the five minute walk back to the hotel complete, I tuck myself into bed and sleep SO well.

Monday 7/6/26:

Rise and shine for the five star hotel breakfast buffet!!

The space? Beautiful. The bounty? Endless. Plates? Too stinkin’ cute!

I was just a pig in shit as they say loading up both a savory and a sweet plate. The people watching was also TOP TIER. My only complaint was the matcha latte was truly dirt-like. When I travel I bring my own individual ceremonial grade matcha packets and I regret not being that woman and handing one off to the waitress to use for my bevi.

After breakfast I reorganized my packing to better distribute the weight and liquids. Hubby and I reviewed our remaining Euros and I was given the burden of spending them. I took one for the team and made my way to the pharmacie.

I wish I could tell you I cobbled together a list of recommendations from friends and trusted beauty gurus, but tight on time I just asked Google Gemini what it recommends for someone 35 with red sensitive skin and €150 to spend. It actually recommended a few things I already have, which strengthened my trust and extended the budget. Here is what I ended up purchasing:

If you are craving a similar French pharmacie haul, most of the products are available on Dermstore’s website (linked above). I didn’t do the exact math, but I believe I got more bang for my buck in France, but not enough to justify a flight.

Since I was under budget, I went looking for a boutique (see we all know a little french) to get a cute dress and two soccer jerseys for my nièce et neveux. Sadly both shops were closed despite having signs on the door that would suggest otherwise.

Bae sends me an S.O.S., he’s heard horror stories about passport control and traffic at Charles de Gaulle today so I scurry back so we can get an earlier start. We checked out and I briefly consider getting a branded hat with my remaining hotel credit, but I fear that is too much of fan girl behavior even for me.

Our Uber driver to the airport is a woman, and she explains the traffic was just horrendous an hour ago, but we should be okay now. I hope this isn’t a repeat of perfume day where I desperately wish to have taken the train for the second time in a week.

It ends up being fine, we make okay time. We brace for the worst with the airport, but it was surprisingly pleasant. Checking the larger bags, passport control, even the temperature are all fine. Terminal 2 is nice. There are play areas for children. High ceilings. Not a ton of food options, but the ones that exist, are nice fast casual spots. The ambient noise is notably lower than other airports I’ve been in.

Now we are here really, really, early and again denied at the Air France lounge (literally wtf). The only acceptable use of time is luxury shopping, of which there are many options — way more than bars or restaurants.

I got my coworkers chocolates. After my clothing fail, I ended up purchasing stuffies (a baguette, croissant and macaron) for the niece and nephews.

Since there were still hours to go, I just had to try on some stuff for myself. This included a Bulgari snake watch and a Cartier trinity ring. My busted manicure didn’t bother me much until these moments. Nothing like jacked up nails paired with a 13k watch.

Leaving the watch behind, we get on our flight. I finish up Lessons from a Medium Spend Q2 which I am so proud of. At this point in time it is my third most viewed post. This is cool for many reasons, but a big one is I wrote it entirely during travel time. I hope that inspires someone who has been meaning to publish more on here. Make use of those moments of downtime, even during a busy season of life! If you need more writing tips/strategies/encouragement I have a whole post dedicated to just that. I love reading your posts on here, so please stop procrastinating and get typing.

It’s 7pm and we land in New York and take a clanky smelly cab back home. I immediately unpacked and did two loads of laundry (the first one I ran in the dryer, the second I hung dry on the rack). I head to bed at 9:30pm and am at the office bright and early the next day at 9:30 am to face my 462 emails. I say this not to boast, but to demonstrate proof that my travel hacks work. Jet lag who??

The hardest part was hitting my protein goal each day without exceeding my overall calories. Over the last few years this has become easier. I’m happy to report, though I spent a lot of time and focus on this in the beginning, it is now second nature.

The real key to this is to have different strategies for the different seasons of life. That’s the thing about diet and exercise — it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It needs to keep humming in the background when you have deadlines, celebrations and travel plans. To reach lofty goals, consistency needs to continue even when our emotions are inconsistent. In order to continue through grief, fatigue, apathy and joy you need realistic strategies. So though I am not a dietitian and not providing medical advice, I’m introducing a new series to demystify hitting the protein goal — as told from my personal experience.

This first one is ‘Lazy as F*ck’. Which is meant to be tongue-in-cheek and reclaim a derogatory phrase. There are very few people (especially women!) that are genuinely lazy. In reality, many of us are pulled in so many different directions, have physical limitations or are just in a season of life where cooking is not the top priority. Many of these recipes were developed when my apartment had the gas shut off, or when I was stretched to my max at work. If this is you: Welcome! I’ve been there too. Don’t relate? What is protein and why do we need it?

Protein is:

“Protein” refers to the macronutrient found in many foods and drinks. People generally say “protein” (or “dietary protein”) when talking about nutrition and “proteins” when discussing the science of how the individual molecules work within your body.1

Benefits include:

Adequate consumption of dietary protein is critical for the maintenance of optimal health during normal growth and aging.2

1) increased satiety--protein generally increases satiety to a greater extent than carbohydrate or fat and may facilitate a reduction in energy consumption under ad libitum dietary conditions;

2) increased thermogenesis--higher-protein diets are associated with increased thermogenesis, which also influences satiety and augments energy expenditure (in the longer term, increased thermogenesis contributes to the relatively low-energy efficiency of protein); and

3) maintenance or accretion of fat-free mass--in some individuals, a moderately higher protein diet may provide a stimulatory effect on muscle protein anabolism, favoring the retention of lean muscle mass while improving metabolic profile.3

Dietary protein adequacy and early breakfast have significant role in preventing self-destruction or deregulated autophagy in trichology and cosmetic dermatology and may prevent various autoimmune, inflammatory, and metabolic diseases.4

Above the paywall because I am looking out for my lazy and broke buds, though conventional wisdom would say you really shouldn’t be both.

HOW DO I COUNT AND CALCULATE MACROS?

• How Much Protein Do You Need? And How To Get It this is a bit more conservative figure and calculation. A great place to start.

• All the coaches and trainers I worked with recommended nearly 1 gram per goal body weight.

• There are online calculators that provide a starting point customized by age, sex, height, weight and goals.

• My advice if you are just starting out: aim for 75-100g a day.

EASY MATH

Understanding the Golden Ratio can help you quickly identify if something is high protein from the nutrition label rather than the misleading marketing on the front.

OUTSOURCING

You can outsource the grocery shopping. It’s not a moral failing. It doesn’t matter. Sometimes it’s not about the journey it’s about the destination. It can actually help you stick to the list and prioritize nutrition and sales while decreasing impulse buys. Once you find what works for you, reorders are just one click. Tuesday 7/28/26:

Concepts of a plan.

That’s what this Rhode Island trip has been for weeks.

I swore I would sort this out on the Metro North back from Connecticut Sunday. The Tea Party I traveled for was a smash success. However, between my spotty cell service and running into on the train (what a treat!) no travel planning was accomplished.

Tuesday, I was able to work from home and with this quiet and focus time I needed to answer the question: Is this trip even possible?

I compared rental cars and trains. I spoke with friends and family about logistics. I got realistic about my work deadlines.

Ultimately I was inspired by GTB (groom to be) from the France trip. The day of our perfume class in Grasse, he arrived early to work in the local library. I called the Mystic Library and asked about a private work space where I could take phone calls. They were booked. Though I am extremely critical of overusing and championing AI,(I loved This Post by about the negative side of AI generated travel planning), I will give credit where credit is due. Google Gemini suggested Amtrak to Westerly, RI and working in the Westerly Library. An 11am Amtrak was secured ($251 WOOF), and I was able to book Study Room 1 from 2:30pm-5:30pm.

I was ready to eat the price of an hour long Uber for leg two of this trip, but phoned a friend in hopes that our travel plans could collide. Turns out they could! A return train out of Providence was purchased ($231 BLAH). This was were similar price to a rental car as I, a non-car owner, have extra fees related to insurance. What tipped the scales is being able to work remotely on the train, allowing me to leave Thursday during the day. Since both tickets were bought days in advance, they were stupidly expensive. My takeaway from Lessons from Q2 is that shit is worth it, so I felt no guilt and pressed forward. I have advice on how to secure better Amtrak deals and other train travel tips in the Travel Dossier, so if you want to replicate this trip next summer, book a cancelable ticket (or even a couple) now.

Wednesday 7/29/26:

Work, work, work, work, work, work
He said me haffi work, work, work, work, work, work.

I went to the office knowing I’d need to get everything done with IRL references/support before I was remote the next two days. It was a long day, and when I got home it was time to dial in on packing.

I actually really enjoy packing. I dive into this in the Dossier, which highlights my love of packing cubes and trying on outfit options in advance. I’ll do a stand alone packing post someday. In the meantime here are some tips to improve your packing:

1. Keep to a color story. This trip I decided to go with a sunny orange palette. This is inspired by a few things: my Honeymoon dahlias that just bloomed! This vintage illustration of me as a house guest, since I’ll be crashing with others this whole time. The brother I’m seeing was known for his orange M sweater our grandmother made him. And of course, Substack school spirit! To make this more sophisticated and less Garfield (though he is forever my muse) I grounded the orange with olive green by packing my Muji pants and skirt from Appartement 47 I just got in Paris. Think a color palette is overkill? It’s actually ideal because this way everything mixes and matches including jewelry, make-up, shoes and bags. It’s important to streamline those accessories as that is what actually takes up space. For this trip I went with crisp white accessories (shoes, hat, bag) to keep it fresh for summer. Speaking of make-up, Nars Orgasm Blush and Laguna Bronzer have been staples for these beach trips along with Glossier’s Matte Lipstick in Zip. I use the Hourglass Ambient Light Palette year round, but with a tan these colors work so nicely as eye shadows.

   

2. You don’t need a site specific wardrobe, but if you want to throw in some fun new pieces go low cost. I did a ThredUp haul. No individual item was over $30 and they added a lot of pizzaz. I searched specific natural fibers — in this case cotton and silk (I find those items hold up the longest and feel best to wear) then I filtered by color (orange and yellow) and price (under $50). I ended up with the above cotton dresses and silk blouse. I put together some similar items in my ShopMy if anyone is feeling inspired:

3. Another accessory tip: Vintage pill boxes are a great way to store everyday jewelry. I got mine during a trip to Munich, Germany last summer but these can be found at flea markets, estate sales and eBay. They also work well in place of a ring holder. Nothing is worse than misplacing your most valuable possessions in a hotel so I like that mine is bright orange. Also within the colorstory!

   

Once packed, I did a quick self bikini wax using this wax and this warmer (btw this is essential between waxes). Then I self-tanned. I’ve perfected this over the summer. I prefer to use disposable latex gloves rather than a mitt. Once all the large areas are done, I switch to a dense foundation brush (like this one) for the neck, the face, (in contour-like placement) wrists, hands and feet. The biggest tell that a tan comes from a bottle is hands and feet, so once you master those you are golden (in more ways than one). I marinated in this for an hour, rinsed and headed to bed. Over the next few days I’ll moisturize like crazy to keep it looking nice (this is my fav).

Thursday 7/30/26:

I wake up and do my typical morning routine. Take my vitamins (D3 and Super B Complex) and make a matcha to enjoy while checking my emails and updating my budget tracker.

After I download some files to work on the train, I pack up remaining items like my electric toothbrush and Kindle and head out the door.

On my way to the train I picked up two babkas and six black and white cookies from Russ & Daughters ($58). I always take the subway ($3) to Moynihan train station. I’ve had too many stressful taxi rides sitting in cross town traffic. My cortisol levels and $30 are more precious to me these days, so I take my shit down the flights of stairs to the Subway. I move to the middle of the platform where I know the elevator will be for the transfer. I wish the MTA was more accessible. Daddy Mamdani can we get on that next?

Though not a big Starbucks person (for both budget and ethical reasons), if I’m running late I’ll order ahead on the Starbucks app for the Impossible Breakfast Sandwich and a Chai, as the subway exit leads you right to the Starbucks in Moynihan Station.

Today I have plenty of time so I refill my water bottle and get a big turkey sandwich with mustard and pickles at Pastrami Queen ($24.41). This is a go-to protein hack for me, if you are looking for more of those I’ll be dropping a whole cheat sheet soon (update, the lazy AF protein post went Live).

My next stop is always the seasonal section in Walgreens. That is where the cheap gifts for kids are. I’ve gotten stickers, finger puppets and slime here on countless occasions but sadly today it’s particularly bare. I grab Uno cards, hand sanitizer and baked lays ($25.98) and wait in the main area for the track to be announced. I eat half my sandwich.

I loathe the boarding process at Moynihan station. It’s unnecessarily chaotic and despite doing it on dozens of Amtrak trips a year, I’m always at the back of the line. How are people getting this insider track information??? It really doesn’t matter though as I take the first available seat next to a fellow 16” MacBook Pro user. We are both locked in for the three and a half hour journey. I’m sketching on Illustrator and he’s watching Rocky — exactly as Steve Jobs intended.

It’s a rainy day, which is fine for the train ride. It’s the same route to Boston I’ve seen a million times. The boats under fog feel right out of a Stephen King novel and charm me when they catch my eye.

The rain is a lot less charming when I exit at the Westerly stop and need to get myself and luggage to the library on foot. I can imagine under sunny circumstances this would be the most delightful walk. Luckily I have an umbrella in the water bottle pocket of my weekender bag. I pass public art, cafes, theaters, a psychic shop, a music shop aptly named Fret and (to my disappointment) a closed donut shop.

The library is gorgeous. Even in the rain I stop and read the plaque explaining its history. I use the ramp and the elevator to arrive at my study room (hell yea accessibility!). Here I send out the files I’ve been working on and reflect on how amazing public third spaces are. A big thank you to the tax payers of Rhode Island.

I mentally clock out at 5:30pm as the rain has stopped. I enjoy the other half of my sandwich in Wilcox Park. Ever since I started gardening (a whole three months ago) I look at every garden differently. This one is particularly stunning. Lots of levels, color and symmetry.

My brother picks me up, and The Last Great American Dynasty is playing as we drive to Watch Hill. He mentions he was just retrieving frisbees from a pond and to pardon the smell. Life is good.

I’m joining his wife’s family vacation. It’s lovely to see everyone. It’s been nearly 10 years since their big New Orleans wedding, which will be forever one of my favorite weddings; I really should add it to The Weddings I Can’t Stop Thinking About. I mentioned to everyone in sincerity that though we had a great time in France — New Orleans has better food. I’m so grateful they are welcoming me as an interloper to this beautiful gathering.

After some hellos and introductions the weather has cleared. We go on a serene beach walk. After reading all about Holiday House (thanks to ) seeing it up close(ish) was a treat. I took pictures for many teen girls with the iconic light house and mansion in the background. I even got an unsolicited lesson on working a digital point and shoot camera — babe, I know how to ball, I was on Facebook in 2008.

I was excited to see Ocean House in the flesh. In 2024/2025 I digested so much wedding content that I inevitably saw many celebrations there. You learn a lot about your family’s wedding preferences while planning. My dad’s is coastal New England. My mom’s — small religious Winter Wedding. It was golden hour and my golden girl Nellie the mini doodle posed beautifully with the iconic Ocean House — rivaling the professional wedding portraits I had pored over only a year prior. I love being an aunt, especially a dog aunt.

Not that anyone cares about my opinion, but having seen Holiday House and Ocean House IRL I fully understand why Taylor would not get married there. They’re both very exposed and quaint. Not to mention they’re within walking distance of a bustling downtown area. I actually can’t imagine the volume of celebrities inhabiting this tiny part of a tiny State. The fully indoor MSG wedding would have been much better in the winter imho (god now I’m sounding like my mother) but I guess there is a thing called football season to consider.

At the end of the evening I help my brother return one of the rental cars. Between this and the Babka I hope this cements me as not a complete mooch. I’m showing the receipts of this tip since that is my thing, but let’s be very clear it’s only possible because of the hospitality of others. At the very least I hope I’m adding some novelty to the end of this family together time. For the Tea Party I rented a car and ended up with an Alfa Romeo. I hate to admit that I much preferred driving this Toyota Camry back to the Westerly Enterprise.

Friday 7/31/26:

It’s nearly August in Taylor Swifts mecca. What could be more perfect? I get up early and do some work so that I can enjoy some time on the beach. It’s really fabulous. Even the simple cues to the body like not feeling the weight of an Apple watch and sand underfoot shifts the nervous system. I’m loving this new (to me) cotton flouncy dress. The playful patchwork pattern perfectly picks up the blue of my swimsuit and the drop waist nods to the Great Gatsby era of Rhode Island’s heyday.

At the beach there is a mix of chatting, reading1 and swimming. Swimming in the ocean is just like nothing else. It’s scary, thrilling and all absorbing with elements of the unknown. It is kinda like falling in love. You hope you don’t get hurt, but to quote Ke$sha “The rush is worth the price I pay.”

This trip is a big family reunion with thirteen children under ten years old. This makes the house lively, silly and of course stocked with chicken nuggets, buttered noodles and ice cream. My brother and I help ourselves to all of the above for lunch. As everyone is leaving tomorrow, clearing the fridge is essential so in addition to being a glutton I am #helpful.

I fill up a plastic U.S. Open cup with ice and Rosé and head back out. More family members have made their way to the beach which leads to more chatting. I get intel on this totally adorable swimsuit. One of the dads gets our attention towards the water. Something keeps appearing and disappearing. Was it a diver? A sea turtle?

We all gathered along the shore with cameras out, which was likely alarming to those out there on paddle boards in retrospect.

It was a Seal!

Not that I have any proof, my camera roll just has scenic shots like below:

He bobbed along the shoreline on his way to the light house, or Taylor’s. Unclear.

Inspired by Mr. Seal I went back into the water. Me and my brother were having a ball out there. Somewhere between discussing the week ahead and picking up rocks with our toes, I realized we were about to get totally rocked by a giant wave.

Remember that metaphor about love? I didn’t have much time to react but knew the heartbreak was coming. I threw my shoulder into it and told myself not to fight — it would be okay. Cue the scene from Blue Crush but a smaller wave closer to shore. Violent. Tumultuous. Up was down and down was up. I told myself to remain calm and stay the course. I ultimately came up for air in 2 feet of water bikini top askew and ears fully waterlogged but otherwise fine. “The rush is worth the price I pay” I told myself and shook it off.

I dried off and got the lowdown (despite limited hearing ability) on the family photo plan. All the strangers asking for photos yesterday had prepared me. I was gonna get The Shot™️. To their credit the whole group (20 adults, 13 kids and 1 dog) are very photogenic so it wasn’t that hard. I felt happy to have provided a service other than cleaning out the fridge into my belly. As if in a movie, as soon as the moment was captured, rain droplets fell. What started as a slow gathering of belongings turned into a full sprint to the house as the sky opened up.

I showered and emptied a pound of sand from my bathing suit, likely from my brush with the sea floor. I settled in to finish my work for the day with the IRL ASMR of ocean waves plus rain played in the background. I call the Westerly Library to reserve Study Room 1 again on Saturday.

When it cleared up, my brother took me to the Watch Hill downtown for a sweatshirt ($70), hat for hubby ($30), lobster roll (his treat!) and to see about a million cotton candy hydrangeas.

We see the most notable site of Watch Hill, the carousel. It’s unlike the carousels I’ve just seen in France. I’m transfixed, but then realize I might be coming across creepy as I watch the ride with none of my own children on it. As we walk the area, I feel silly for asking for recommendations as it becomes clear exactly what they are as the whole downtown is one street.

I’m reminded that the seasonal beach town’s workforce is all underage as a 14 year old explains to me she needs to get the owner to pour the beer. I try to identify which teen is running the show at St Clair Annex as we wait for our number to be called. It’s a little ambiguous, whereas I could tell the power dynamic at the Westerly Library immediately . In addition to this unservable beer, we get an Italian grinder and a lobster roll to do a half/half split. The crinkle cut fries were surprisingly good. I feel like these get a bad rap, especially at ShakeShack, but when hot and salty these hit the spot! The Italian grinder was the standout. The tomato was fresh and juicy, the tang of banana peppers and a little sweetness from a balsamic glaze drizzle made it extra special. An Italian sub by the beach will never not hit for me, whereas the lobster roll was really more for the ‘gram. I did appreciate that it came with two pickle chips.

On the drive back we stopped at the aptly named Wine Store to bring back beer because we are #heroes

Saturday 8/1/26:

Today is check out day and I try my best to stay out of the way during the departures. I made a coffee with the remaining ice cream and briefly watched a baby.

It’s a misty morning and I feel I am getting the full Rhode Island experience. My brother shows me the sweater he’s knit himself. I couldn’t be more proud and impressed. Such a full circle moment for the guy who rocked a hand knit jumper his whole childhood. Just look how fabulously it came out:

The last departing group drops me off in town back at my home base the Westerly Library, where I work on this very post (to this playlist) until Caroline picks me up. Despite having a full time job and traveling nearly every weekend this summer I’m able to consistently post here on Substack (this is my 35th post!). We cruised back to Watch Hill as she’s never been. After parking we step inside the Summer Boutique which was closed yesterday evening. This is in support of the (rival) Watch Hill Library. I’m kidding — all libraries are so important and they all deserve support. It feels fun to be under such a lux tent (I’m able to identify all tiers of tents from my wedding planning days) right by the marina with yachts (still working on identifying tiers of yachts from my time in Cannes)

We have another meal at St Clair Annex. This time I get a burger, though I am tempted to get the Italian Grinder again. It’s very clear now which of these teens is running the show. They’re locked in and giving it their all despite some long pauses and required assistance. It’s a welcome change of pace from NYC career bartenders and the French waiters free of tipping culture shackles.

We get gas and hit the road to our friend’s (Dr. Bestie) summer BBQ closer to Providence. On the way I pull up an (unverified) map from Reddit where the Real Housewives of Rhode Island (RHORI) live. We don’t have enough time to stop at Audrey’s Coffee House or Pizza Mamma on the way — but I’m comforted to know they’re just a stone’s throw away.

We arrive at Dr. Bestie’s and are greeted by her adorable children. It’s so wild to interact with your life-long friend’s offspring. You see shades of them, their siblings and their parents in the way they interface with the world. We play on' ‘blast off rock’ and I surprise myself at how many words I know of these Little Mermaid songs. I was one of the eels (which were split into 4 parts) and I guess the words have never left my brain.

Other doctor guests arrive at the BBQ and it’s nice to put faces to names. I’m excited to meet someone living in Rochester NY as that is one of my many upcoming Amtrak trips. I tell her about the one single man I know there. I’m not sure where this late-in-life desire to play match maker is coming from. One of my friends asked me how much I paid the friend who introduced me to my husband. I suppose I feel the need to pay it forward and my time is ticking. One can always use more good Karma.

Speaking of, Caroline has brought the girls an absolute banger of a toy — a magnetic play ice cream shop. I spend the majority of the party making up backstories for the various dolls that explain their ice cream needs. We run a 2 for 1 promotion, a cash register gets involved. A play mop comes out and the shop closes up for the night before the last customer and the mop get ceremoniously launched off the deck.

When the party is over, I shower and get into my PJs. The household (minus the children) settle into the couch and we watch RHORI finale and two part reunion. It’s like watching Shakespeare in the Globe Theatre. I’m buzzing. I’ve never seen so many brunette hair extensions in one place. I wonder if they’ve also been to The Wine Store or the Westerly Library. One is the victim of really bad self tan palms (couldn’t be me!). All I know is that tomorrow we NEED to go to Pizza Mamma.

I lay my head down and put on iPhones’ built in white noise (I changed from Rain to Ocean at the request of princess Caroline) take Magnesium and Psyllium Husk tablets, put on my silk 3D eyemask and pass out.

Sunday 8/2/26:

I sleep amazing. I love staying with people with kids. The air is ripe with coffee smell ahead of 7am and I just know there are a million prepackaged snack options awaiting me downstairs.

We chat and catchup on the couch. Everything is the same and yet everything is different. I’m so proud of all she’s accomplished and built and yet there is always so much more in the works. It’s a good reminder of what work drama actually classifies as an emergency as she details stories from the NICU.

We play more ice cream shop with the little ones before ditching them to go to Pizza Mamma.

I’m excited to see this pizza shop with chandeliers and glam interior. My initial reaction, I was surprised this wasn’t more of a sit-down restaurant! There is a wall of two-top banquette and counter service. It’s busy and smells delicious. There is a tray by the register with the signature pizza chips and baked goods adorned with cheeky stickers. I’m also surprised at the variety of pizza styles. As I said in my recent post:

I could eat pizza every day. I love Detroit style. I love pizza pot pie. I love Ellio's.

So I am right at home with this level of variety. We got the infamous Pizza Chips, a Detroit style meatball vodka pie, house salad, a giant chocolate chip cookie and ice teas from the cooler ($65). Everything was delicious! My heart filled with pride to see Alicia’s photo alongside the heart-shaped pizza (her brainchild, not just on Valentine’s day!) on the menu.

My one piece of constructive feedback is they should have the merch available in the store. There is a QR code that links to some pretty fabulous stuff, I just wish I could buy it and put it on right there (like my Watch Hill crewneck).

I wanted to go to New York Systems for Hot Wieners but there was just no time or stomach space. Curious why they’re called hot wieners? Below is the Alton Brown video that influenced me and explains this (via ).

Guess I’ll just have to come back for that! I leave on the Amtrak at 3:50pm out of Providence. It’s a full circle moment driving into the place I spent six weeks as a teen (for RISD’s summer program) in my American Apparel polyester chiffon shirt just to be back in my silk chiffon Ralph Lauren top 20 years later. My time in RI then and now was a little expensive ($885 for 4 days including outfits) but ultimately fun, stimulating and inspiring.

As a stereotypical Virgo, I live for the feedback and the details. Monday 6/29/26:

It’s 9am and we’ve just crawled off of our overnight train from Paris. From the Nice train station we pile ourselves and our bags into an Uber for a 7 minute drive. As we pass countless ice cream shops and begin to see the Mediterranean, my shoulders relax and the hot winding city streets feel like a distant memory.

We can’t check-in to our hotel (the Hotel Albert-1er Nice) yet, but they hold our bags and we use the bathroom to change into our bathing costumes. I talk to the woman at the front desk about beach clubs.

I don’t understand why America refuses to partake in beach club culture. The debate among my friend group (besides whether September is Summer or Fall) is Beach vs. Pool. For so long I was captain of Team Pool, but after spending some time abroad, I now understand a lot of what was driving my disdain for the beach. It’s packing and hauling all the provisions to the beach. It makes a beach day more similar to hiking than it is to relaxing. An all-inclusive resort also has its drawbacks too. You are in a competition for resources. There is a lack of variety. That is why beach club is perfect and always worth the money. No lugging, shade, and the option to leave and come back. All of this while being waited on.

So it comes as no surprise, after dropping our bags, we made our way the 150 meters to Plage Beau Rivage Nice, where we settled in for the rest of the day.

I will say the transition from night train to beach club is a bit disorienting and I wish I had organized my packing differently. I sorely miss my water shoes that are tucked away in my suitcase. But in some ways I’m grateful it’s a rocky beach, as I have my leather purse with me. It’s a blessing it (and its contents) won’t be getting all sandy.

I don a conspicuously large hat and settle into the sounds of the sea and "Let's Go" (which will play at nearly every establishment this week). Looking back, I regret not playing this at my beach club-inspired summer party.

I get a strawberry mojito, dip in the water and enjoy a scrumptious burger. This is living! I am so grateful for past me for getting my shit together so present me could act like a beached whale in paradise.

The guys have been continuously disappointed by the local beer selection (limited draft options and high APV IPAs) on the first leg of the trip. Plage Beau Rivage Nice really had it all, including le Bud.

By early afternoon bestie and I went wandering for la glace. In this process we stumbled upon the Marché à la Brocante. Lucky we arrived on a Monday! We looked around but ultimately had satisfied our need for treasures and moved on to find our cones. There are a million ice cream options in the old town area of Nice. Louise les Glaces was our favorite and we ended up going back nearly every night. This was our inaugural visit and it was love at first lick.

Fortified and lightly sunburnt (thank god for the hat otherwise it would be worse) it was now after 4pm. Whenever hotels started adopting 11am check-out and 4pm check-in was a warm day in hell because literally what the fuck. I need someone in charge to do something about that, along with getting rid of those extraneous concert ticket fees.

We checked into our hotel and after the less-than-lux night train experience I was really excited to be in a beautiful hotel room.

Unfortunately this was not the sigh of relief I was hoping for.

The shape of the room was round with a queen bed. There was not enough space to even wheel the suitcase around it. No closet. No dresser. Two shelves too high to access above the mini bar and a bite size bar with two hangers. Needless to say I was not happy. I’m usually pretty go-with-the-flow, but when the bathroom door was also broken I said Ça fait chier.

Still in that Farm Rio sundress, I went down and talked to the front desk. They had a hard time understanding my complaints until I showed them these photos. Ultimately they agreed to move us to a new room the next day while we were out and about, “just leave everything in the room packed up” they explained. Fantastique.

We get ready for dinner and I’m so glad I had my Karen moment because the bathroom has the strangest cramped layout and I’m so glad to be bidding it au revoir.

As a Virgo all I want to do is unpack, but I try and keep things contained as I do my makeup and slide on this little black dress I had originally bought for my bachelorette last year. I own this, but you can also rent it. Bestie and I must be suffering from Folie à deux as we match in our black lacy dinner looks.

I picked tonight’s restaurant: Bocca Nissa. Mediterranean is in my top three cuisines and I’m thrilled the online reviews look good. I do a 180 degree pivot from my Karen mode and try my best to charm our way into a rooftop table without a reservation. Sometimes I can have a certain je ne sais quoi that brings on bonne chance. Fingers crossed tonight is one of those nights. We are given 45 minutes to wander before our fate is decided. You know we used 15 of them for a mini photoshoot!

We also scoped out other ice cream shops further cementing our love of Louise. Before we knew it, it was time to see the judge at the Bocca host stand. Our girl came through, roof top secured! The meal and ambiance were divine.

We enjoyed the shared plates, drinks the size of our heads and laughter. We discuss plans for tomorrow. The lush roof top was a whole vibe. The dinner was leisurely and we even got a very yummy deconstructed keylime-pie-like dessert.

We continued chatting into the night until a loud THOMP disturbed us. Little shrieks followed by another THOMP. Only from the whispers of others did I learn a disgruntled neighbor was throwing bananas at the restaurant rooftop. As someone who lives in arguably one of the loudest and rowdiest neighborhoods — I empathized with them. In one of my lowest moments of frustration I threw eggs at an idling motorcycle blasting music at 4am. Bananas, by comparison, seemed tame.

Bananagate did its thing and killed the party vibe — so we headed back to our hotel.

Tuesday 6/30/26:

Despite all my complaints, I’m so grateful to wake up in a real bed. Even if I could touch all the walls from that bed.

Today is bestie’s bday and that is not nothing as Claude pointed out when GTB tried to deceive the robot into thinking he forgot (this is where we are at as a society). A reminder this is my first post that will be subject to Substack’s AI detection filter. It’s real amateur hour over here so I’m not worried but am intrigued on what the result will be.

Here, waiting in the lobby for our Uber, I start to notice my nails looking odd. The red has some sort of ombre effect. It’s subtle but I notice it. More on that later.

Of course the queen planned a lovely birthday and we are off to Yolo Plage via an Uber. Since there are four of us, Ubers worked out to be about the same price as the train, but if you are doing a trip to Nice solo or a smaller group just know these spots can be accessed by public transit (right off the Antibes stop). Yolo Plage has great celebratory energy with a sandy beach and novelty drink glasses with fun garnishes. For the adventurous types there are paddle boards for rent and places to jump into la mer. We get front row chairs with plenty of shade and wifi.

And that is why I am now Team Beach Club.

Once the drink orders are in, we grab hubby for the bday photoshoot. I tighten the strings on my TA3 swimsuit, throw on my heirloom sunglasses and we get to modeling. My man may have contributed absolutely nothing to planning this trip, but he’s helped us get The Shot™️ every single day. And that my friends, is priceless.

After some sun lounging, we have a scrumptious lunch and bring up our favorite vacation conversation starters:

1. “Where would your three residences be located if there was an unlimited budget?”

2. “You can have any vehicle (no budget) what is it?” Bestie and I picked Yachts. GTB said Private Jet, Hubby said Helicopter despite the safety concerns.

The swimming was lovely, I tried my new 360 snorkel. This took some practice getting it on and off, but once I got it I was an unstoppable fish-following-machine.

We toasted bestie with champs, and were the very last ones at the club. It took some time to get a car back, even the app didn’t want the day to end. While waiting we watched the employees complete a paddle board race (the underdog won!)

Back at the hotel, I was excited to see our new room. It was giant with a real closet. I’ve never been more grateful for right angles. The bathroom is triple the size of the previous one. As if I’ve been holding my breath this whole time, I unpack and feel at ease. I request a steamer and one is sent up immediately. I love this hotel.

I get ready for dinner in an outfit so skimpy I attempt to cover some sunburn on my chest and armpit with my luxe foundation. I rented this Bondi Born silver dress so the fit is not perfect and don’t feel bad about getting a little make up on it. I absolutely love the color and it works great for my color season.

If Mediterranean is one of my favorite cuisines, pizza is one of my favorite dishes. I could eat pizza every day. I love Detroit style. I love pizza pot pie. I love Ellio's. Tonight is no different, at La Favola the pizza is fabulous and a shared baked pasta dish makes it even more decadent. Happy Birthday Bestie!

At dinner we discussed another dream scenario: “Say you received 10 million dollars tomorrow - what do you do with it?” The answers varied, but all were entertaining and thought-provoking.

After our cheese filled meal we were desperate for a walk. We spent most of our nights in this neighborhood and I enjoyed getting more familiar with the sepia serpentine streets.

My research pointed us towards Movida for more drinks and dancing.

More mojitos and genuinely great music. We laughed at the calendar hanging on the wall, where everyday was “house party” honestly #goals. Why does nowhere in NYC play dance music with lyrics?! My one criticism is it was very heavy on the Justin Bieber (French Canadian favoritism??) It was such a cool feeling dancing with my loved ones near the sea and the full moon. Even if it was to multiple Justin Bieber songs. We took our photo under the full moon and made our way to the casino.

The casino was oddly quiet, small and clean which was a contrast from ones I've been to in the past but could be standard in France. Everything about my last time in France was a gamble, so I didn’t feel the need to visit a casino. The real vibes were outside after France beat Sweden and the streets were electric. It made for a lively walk home.

Wednesday 7/1/26:

It’s July! I’ve been looking forward to this day since the moment I was zooming out on the Nice map and realized Grasse is relatively close. As a fragrance addict (my gateway drug was candles) I knew we needed to go there. The agenda today consists of enjoying the Jardins du MIP (Musée International de la Parfumerie) and making our own perfumes at Molinard.

As we wait for our Uber in the lobby, I notice my nails are looking worse. A little research tells me this is from a combination of over-curing and extreme exposure to heat and UV (thanks heatwave). Turns out red pigments are the most sensitive to this. Who knew! This is a good lesson. I’ve been curing my fingers individually, as a newbie, I thought that was giving me more precision — but actually it was leaving them over-cured. It makes sense why my index and thumb are suffering the most as they were in the lamp multiple times as I did the subsequent digits. All that to say I am not ready to write my diatribe on home gel nails yet, but I’m learning more every month.

Sadly the Uber was the wrong way to go, and I kick myself for not taking the train as we sit in heavy traffic for an extra 45 minutes. I’m feeling the pressure as this is the day I planned and I desperately do not want a domino effect. When we arrived at the museum I explained to the group we only have an hour. I don’t know how hard it will be to get another car so I’m moving with caution and set a timer on my phone. I feel a mix of emotions as we are handed an extensive map of the gardens.

As we reapply sunscreen and get our bearings, I realize it might be a blessing to have an hour time limit. It is extremely hot and sunny.

Wandering through, it occurs to me this is the most beautiful and educational outdoor space I’ve ever been in. Highlights include smelling fresh jasmine and standing in a lavender field (a full circle moment as that is the name of the audio of choice on our Loftie sound machine). The space has lovely water features that are captured better in video, so here are some below:

My one regret is that we came after rose season, which I’m sure is incredible. Though to get jasmine and lavender in bloom is a real treat. Even nature says you can have it all, but not all at once.

We await our car in some much needed shade. My white linen dress was ideal for this stroll providing cottagecore vibes and much needed breathability and ventilation. It’s old, but on resale sites in a size 2 and 6.

Our car to perfume class is a Build Your Dreams (BYD) which hubby is excited about. Having been to China multiple times, I’ve been in many BYD cars. I forget it’s a rare novelty for most.

We arrive at the class in the nick of time, or so I think. Unfortunately I had put in the Molinard retail address, not the class. Bordel.

The woman at the shop phones the class, she says they don’t usually make exceptions to tardiness and we better hustle. We scurry the 10 minute walk through the town.

Reaching the immaculate classroom five minutes late made me think back to High School. I’m frazzled and looking over people’s shoulders as I try to quickly catch up on the types of notes and best smelling practices. I guess I’ve always been this way.

And just like that Remedial Potion Class begins.

And honestly, it was both really challenging and interesting. More serious and intense than I would have expected, as there is only a 20 minute window before the nose becomes tired. “Do not waste those minutes on scents you know you don’t like” our Professor cautioned. We were instructed to select at least three Top, Middle and Base notes. I decided I wanted to make something very summery. However I was also distracted by some of the unique scent options (Cola!?). If I were to do this again I would book us a private class. The woman to my left was incredibly annoying. She asked the Professor what she should do if she “has a stuffed up nose and can’t smell anything” and pestered him how best to recreate Baccarat Rouge. Oh mon Dieu! At least pick a more niche Francis Kurkdjian scent.

After we narrowed in on our notes, we each had time with the Professor to talk about the formulation. I’m convinced this man is a magician and a savant. He demonstrated the effects of adding or subtracting a single note by fanning them all out as we inhaled. From there he provided the milliliters for balance, all from his head (though I did notice he wore a calculator watch—maybe for more complex cases).

We used pipettes to create our perfumes, which was both frustrating and satisfying. I was reminded of my high school chemistry partners. One became the valedictorian, one was later arrested for making DMT in his dorm room. Both were incredible partners and I’m grateful to them for my A in chemistry despite never using those skills until this very moment 20 years later.

At the end of the class we got to name our creations and received a diploma (in perfect calligraphy — Professor is so multitalented!!) We enjoyed the museum and the shop before walking back into town for a sandwich at Restaurant Edelweiss.

We got an Uber back to Nice and discuss how early we need to be up the next day. I’m confused at which version of me would have booked this — but then I am reminded that in the south of France, most of the marina space is for private yachts, making it hard to find boat options for us plebs. So yes, we will be hitting the train at 6am tomorrow to Saint-Raphaël Valescure for our group catamaran trip. GTB sorts out our train tickets and even scores us a family discount. Slay!

Back at the hotel we have a much needed air conditioned rest. I crack open the mini St. Tropez and get to work on my fake tan. Hubby does my back and after marinating, I take him to McDonalds to try the local fare as a reward. I love McDonalds ice cream, so to add a pistachio cream is just chef’s kiss. I wasn’t a big fan of the McDo or the Curry Chicken sandwich. Maybe it’s fine we have a smaller less adventurous menu at home — just the hits.

We head to bed early. I’m ready to wake up a golden goddess for my time on the open seas.

Thursday 7/2/26:

Bonjour à tous! It’s 5:30am and I’m getting in full 1960’s patriotic pirate drag. Putting together outfits for this leg of the trip has been so fun. Today I am wearing a silk scarf and shell earrings from a box of novelty jewelry I inherited from my late aunt. I pair it with this rented cherry red dress and Glossier’s matte lipstick in Zip (that is surely expired). If you need French Riviera fashion inspo, take a note from my niece’s library book:

After a few days of indulging in Ubers, we made our way back to the Nice-ville train station, where we sleepily disembarked our night train.

We struggle to get the QR enabled gates to grant us access for our family ticket. No one works here and after struggling for a bit, the taxi drivers on break tell us to talk to the yellow voice box. I had no faith that would do anything, but to my surprise there was a person on the other side that opened the handicap gate.

The train is clean and modern. We settle in and enjoy the ride and the scenery, which includes: surfers, families, cliffs and rocky beaches.

My nails are degrading by the day. But oh well, they were free.

We get into the town of Saint-Raphaël and grab a (below average) pastry and head to the port. The ferris wheel and yachts are a nice backdrop as we await our captain.

Our adventure today is on AMC Cape Grace’s Signature Full Day Catamaran. I’m not sure exactly what to expect but we are waiting in line with some older couples and what appears to be a group of German high school students. We toss our shoes into the basket and make a beeline for a round banquette (see we all know some French) in the shaded lower level. There is no competition for this spot as the kids pile on to the net and the retirees ascend to the sundeck.

There is a Welcome and Safety talk that is much longer in French than in English. Our captain has a stick straight chestnut lob with sunny highlights that makes me think of Kelly Bensimon. I trust him with our lives.

The combination of 4th of July and the World Cup has me feeling oddly patriotic. America is a great place under bad management. I wear my Washington D.C. travel scarf which my mom gave to me from her family home. I love that it includes all the states in stars and lists when they were added. It has all the D.C. landmarks listed and memorialized (before the rose garden was gone and the reflecting pool ruined and the east wing torn down). In previous years when we’ve played the fantasy residence game, I picked a townhouse in D.C. I used to really like going there. My last few visits have been so macabre. National Guard asking for kids' IDs at Union Station. Uber drivers proselytizing the importance of crypto. But this scarf reminds me of happier times.

As we take to the open sea I feel giddy and free. I’ve never been on a catamaran and it feels like flying. A naturally anxious person, I feel at ease. When we anchor to swim I’m blissed out. I’m not sure what it is but swimming in the open sea makes me feel so small but interconnected in a good way. I’m hoping to do a separate post on boat life as it seemingly contradicts conventional financial wisdom, but I have a few boat things brewing stateside back in August.

The one thorn of the day, more for her not me, is that one guest is very seasick. I am so disappointed in myself for not bringing my sea-bands, Dramamine, Pepto tablets and ginger gum with me. I was not thinking clearly with the early start, so they are all still in the hotel room. These and lots of other packing essentials can be found in my travel dossier. The crew are doing their best, but ultimately we are en route to the Cannes marina for a medical emergency docking.

As much as I felt bad for this woman (ironically hubby took her and her husband’s picture at the start of the journey, so sadly she has that memento of the worst day of her life) the stop in the Cannes marina was thrilling. From our sun beds we saw the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès where they host the famous film festival and the Hôtel Martinez. Famous in its own right, but also the filming location of the next season of White Lotus. My only context for yacht life is through Below Deck and leaked celeb paparazzi photos so when GTB told me the estimated cost for each of the vessels around us my jaw dropped. Talk about proximity to wealth.

After our friend was safely in the custody of a medic, we sped off to another location for lunch and swimming. The lunch was great, and turns out having the majority of the boat under drinking age meant more wine for us!

They start bumping some fire tunes and we take over the trampoline as the German students are now sunburnt and overstimulated. I feel scared blopping around as the twinkling water zoomed by below, but the sounds of ABBA and gossip from bestie are a really good distraction.

It was such a fabulous boat day, I was so sad when we pulled back into port. GTB grabbed us some novelty chips for the train ride back. I felt the rocking of the waves even on the steady TER.

Back at the hotel, inspired by my fresh (fake) tan, I put on my cream Sea NY Lace dress (similar here) for our dinner at Lavomatique.

I’ve been really forgiving with restaurant service and quality on this trip due to the heatwave. I can’t imagine going from a hot, restless night's sleep to working in a hot kitchen. I will say Lavomatique was particularly disappointing on all fronts. Maybe they were having an off night, but I personally would not recommend. Luckily we have Louise. After a cone, us ladies went to bed early. The guys hit the town and I’m sure the casino is happy to see them coming. I passed out feeling phantom waves rock me to sleep.

Bad air quality and diarrhea inducing virus. We are living on Bleak street —and this was all even before the flood warning.

I’ve been away and busy at work, so I haven’t seen my friends in over three weeks. All I wanted was a beach day, but a pivot was necessary.

I talk a big game about The Art of Hosting, which meant I had no choice but to accept the ultimate challenge—throwing a summer party with less than 30 hours to pull it together.

A few voice notes were exchanged and a plan started to form. My husband and sister-in-law were away, but they encouraged me to do the shindig. My SIL graciously offered her (much bigger and nicer) place. Emboldened and supported, a low lift invite went out (thanks Partiful).

Friday was kind of a wash in terms of party prep. I had physical therapy and a full day of work. I popped by my SIL’s place after work to do some recon. It was in great shape and didn’t really need much. I cleaned out the fridge and took out the trash and recycling to have a blank canvas tomorrow. I hid away some breakable things, which made me feel like a High Schooler again. I scurried off to make my 7:15pm Yin Yoga class. There was a sub, who asked me if I had any injuries. I hesitated because, 1.) I really don’t want to get into all this with him 2.) this shouldn’t be a factor for this mellow class I’ve taken a dozen times. That should have been my sign, but I stuck it out for a half an hour of prop supported inversions that were cumbersome to set up and opposite of relaxing. I ended up walking out mid class (something I never do) in favor of a sauna/cold shower combo. It was the right call, time is precious and as Kim Cattrall says “I don't want to be in a situation for even an hour where I'm not enjoying myself."

In the sauna, I visualized the party I wanted and tried to distill the important elements free of the noise of the outside world. The sauna manifestation is something I’ve learned from artist Lyndsey Marko. I first did one in Paris earlier this month and call me crazy but I think they work??

After getting clarity, I went to CVS and purchased the good toilet paper. An impactful detail, that I was able to stack coupons for.

Saturday started with some much needed personal admin, followed by a big writing block. I mapped out my new series “Hitting Your Protein Goal if you are...” which I am super excited about. The rain was dramatic and made a nice backdrop for writing.

I showered and got dressed in a utilitarian fit and did my makeup to last the next 12 hours using both the Chanel primer and the Infallible setting spray.

I jumped on the founding member video call for Petal & Hearth. It was inspiring and gave me a lot of food for thought, one being to publish more frequently and with less edits — which is exactly what I’m exercising with this post though it feels a little out of my comfort zone tbh!

All this to say I didn’t get my ass into gear for this party until about 3:30pm day of.

I figure I’ll try my hand at it. Here is a detailed account of the first leg of my trip to France:

Thursday 6/25/26:

I wake up at 5am, as I’ve been doing the past few months. But instead of checking emails, updating my budget tracker and having a slow morning I am melting hard wax.

After trying on all my outfit options I realize I was a bit too conservative on my instructions for European Wax Center — those Cupshe one pieces are really high-cut! I decide to do my brows and upper lip while the wax warmer is on. Really greeting the day with a (hairless) smile both upstairs and down.

I pack my last minute items like my electric toothbrush and Kindle and head to the office in Midtown.

The day unfolds in the exact opposite way anyone leaving for vacation would want. I don’t write much about my day job on here, so I’ll let you use your imagination but I’m grateful I booked the 11:30pm flight. No one leaves the office at 5pm in NYC baby.

That evening my husband and I head to the airport. I feel totally prepared for this overnight flight. If you struggle with this, or just need packing tips — check out The Lucite Vision Travel Dossier.

I have such bad luck with lounge access and today is no different. We get turned away from the Air France Lounge. Merde. Tail between our legs, we pop over to the Turkish Airways Lounge. They let us in no problem, but there is no booze, hot food or seats available. I think I need to employ an Etsy Witch to lift this curse.

After sipping a soda in a glorified hallway, we try our luck at the Primeclass Lounge. Succès! The subterranean oasis right next to the gate welcomes us with open arms. The food looks tragic but it is quiet and cozy. I have a glass of wine and then use the spacious bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth. They are pumping in audio of the World Cup game into the bathroom which at first was really unsettling, but eventually became a soothing way to do the skincare routine.

After a small delay, we board our flight. I sleep the whole way in a middle economy seat. Proof that you should listen to me on my travel advice!

Friday 6/26/26:

We arrive at the polarizing Charles de Gaulle airport and await our bags on the carousel (a French word we already know, I point out). Hubby, whose one goal for the trip is to see some French dogs (chien/chienne I explain) checks that off the list as we stand next to well a behaved Dachshund (not a French word) also waiting for his bag (sac - I say, trying to impress petit chien mignon).

All is going well until we hit the taxi line. An hour forty wait outside, no shade in la canicule. Less than ideal. We see a couple leave the line for the rideshares, only to return twenty minutes later. Clearly there were problems all around. I knew there would be some CDG drama to endure, I’m just glad it didn’t come at the price of nos sacs.

We check-in at Edgar & Achille, a hotel found by our companions who prioritize queen-size beds and air conditioning. I couldn’t be more grateful for this filter as we are experiencing a historic heat wave.

At the hotel restaurant, I enjoy a Hugo Spritz and burrata as our companions filled us in on their problèmes de bagages. Sadly their bags didn’t make the transfer at Heathrow. Though tracked with AirTags, their attempts to retrieve involved endless uttering of “c'est impossible” (a concept that is a lot different in France than America) and a twenty-minute Zara shopping spree before a lunch reservation (because for Americans — anything is possible).

Fiancé to the trip, or GTB (Groom to Be) as I like to call him, and I talk about our language abilities. He mentions studying French in High School and he relates it to practicing tennis solo. Now that he is here, and someone is actually hitting the ball back, it’s a bit unnerving. I love this analogy. I say to him I just know tons of nouns, and feel like I’m just collecting tennis balls in my knapsack — waiting for an opportunity to show one off. Writing this post, I’m heavily inspired by Agatha Christie’s Poirot where little French phrases are woven into the writing (I’ll keep them in italics for clarity). I do feel like those have seeped into my brain. So I have a bunch of nouns and phrases from the 1920’s — so beyond prepared for this trip.

We followed the bags via AirTag from our classic bistro set up, and cheered with glee when they finally arrived.

While the winners went to go unpack their spoils, my husband and I take a literal walk down memory lane to Bless where I interned in the summer of 2012. This is the last time I was in Paris, so I’ve only been in this un-air-conditioned city during the sweltering months. J’adore souffrir I say to the women running our hotel when they question me on this. Maybe that is what I get embroidered on a Boat Tote.

I wish I had more photos from this time, but it just lives in my memory. A lot of it came rushing back on that walk — including the time I locked eyes with Sofia Coppola on this exact route.

On the way, we walk through Square du Temple - Elie Wiesel, I explain to my husband I used to eat lunch there every day. It brings back so many lovely memories. I later learned it is the site of The Temple —where Marie Antoinette & Co. were jailed during the French Revolution. I had no idea, because in 1808 Napoleon had the Temple demolished. So I guess the spot doesn’t hold great memories for everyone.

Speaking of demolition, when I first touched down in Paris in 2012, I explored the city with my dad. As my eyes bugged out of my head at the beauty, he explained to me this was the direct result of France surrendering to Germany early in WWII. Paris was spared the devastating, block-by-block artillery shelling and strategic Allied bombing campaigns that flattened cities like Berlin, London, or Warsaw.1

In August 1944, a desperate Hitler ordered the German military governor of Paris, General Dietrich von Choltitz, to wire the city's iconic landmarks with explosives and reduce it to a field of ruins before the Allies could liberate it. However, recognizing the futility and cultural devastation of the command, von Choltitz directly defied the Führer and refused to press the detonator, leaving the historic capital intact.2

This was pre-Google AI summary, so if you wanted historical context you either had to travel with a tour guide, a book or a history obsessed boomer Dad.

After a few laps around the park, we wander through Marché des Enfants-Rouges. I explained that on special occasions, like my last day of the internship, we’d eat here for lunch instead of the park. This is where I first tried tagine and it was love at first bite.

The market survived the French Revolution, the rebuilding of Paris under Haussmann, and both World Wars. In the 1990’s the community rallied to save it with extensive renovations.3

Being American, it’s an unfamiliar feeling to interact with places that have such a long history. It makes me feel small in a good way, and I’m grateful to be part of the story.

Speaking of personal history, get ready to hear a bit more of mine.

My internship at Bless was incredible. Even though it was over 14 years ago, when we arrived at the storefront—which was unfortunately closed for the evening—one of the projects I actually worked on (and modeled for!) was displayed right in the window. It made me so emotional. Of course this experience had stuck with me, but to see I had any sort of lasting impact there blew me away.

I realize during this pilgrimage, this relatively short part of my life, has greatly shaped me. Navigating the city (pre-smartphones and Google Maps) gave me a great sense of direction. Working and living in a place without speaking the language pushed me to be independent and confident. I took a lot of risks, asked for help and favors (a big thank you to the two families that hosted me!). It was a great reminder to myself to channel these qualities again. Before there was Shoot Your Shot Wednesday — I was doing that all over Paris. I secured an internship, fashion show invites, places to live and a wonderful social life all just by asking. Whenever the French stereotype of coldness or rudeness is brought up to me, I dispute it vehemently. I have never been shown more hospitality, kindness and sincerity than when I was in France.

Recently my sister-in-law told me that my dad mentioned I should have skipped a year of High School and just went to Paris earlier. This was shocking to hear, as he was very resistant to the idea when I did it in college. He even explained the expenses (I started my trip with a month long for-credit school led trip) were that of a wedding. I said I’d forgo the wedding for this trip. A conversation he probably forgot — but I took as fact. Subtly influencing my choice to not get married until 35 despite being in a healthy relationship for ten years.

Paris really gives you Main Character Energy just through osmosis. During my internship I felt like the lead of a video game, and every errand I was sent on a new level. Some memorable tasks include: delivering to a prestigious modeling agency, mailing things at La Poste (a shockingly hard level!), swapping a raspberry-pi with a hacker commune under a bridge (one of the few people I’m still in touch with because they introduced me to some very new at the time social media).

Was I a great intern? Debatable. It’s good perspective as I’ve mentored a handful of interns in my career and the parabola of ‘annoying as hell’ to ‘endearing’ always tests my patience. If you are one of my former interns reading this, I love you — but you’ll get it when you are older.

After the reminiscing, we popped into Franprix to get two liters of Evian (I remember being giddy when we were given these as interns, since in the States they’re a symbol of luxury) as even that thirty minute stroll left us depleted. At the shop my husband stood in awe of the tinned fish options. Going to the grocery store abroad can be more fun than a museum.

We linked back up with les copains at the hotel and ventured out to watch some soccer. After being refused from Lenovo Fan Zone at Café A (you need a reservation), we watched the World Cup at Les Copains which was a great throw back to the pathetic vocab lesson I gave Hubby when he asked how to say “babe” in French. I said bebe works, but if it’s like ‘your girl’ you could say ma copine. I ordered a Piña Colada because I’m on vacation, and it was hot and humid as fuck in there. Bestie and I drank it on a bench outside — a lovely option that we don’t have in the U.S. The hoots and hollers reverberated through the sweltering cave into the winding side streets. Go! Sports!

After the game we wandered a bit for a late dinner at Le Chardonnay (a recommendation from my dad’s bestie) of classic French fare including escargot, steak tartare and île flottante. On the walk home we spotted a familiar face, the ubiquitous JOVANI pink lettering. Took a photo and headed to bed.

Saturday 6/27/26:

I awoke at a normal time thanks to my impeccable timezone tactics and started the day with the 2026 Butter Croissant Winner (though this could be like ‘World’s Best Coffee’ in Elf and I’d have no idea).

I led three of us to Les Puces. The number one agenda item I had for this time in Paris. Navigating the metro was surprisingly second nature. Memories of my commute came back. By August I was commuting from the suburbs and the bus service was on ‘Holiday Hours.’ It was such a journey that included a lot of walking and various modes of transportation. When I look back, I just remember it as a scenic adventure — though I did have to be strategic on pee breaks. However, France actually has public restrooms unlike NYC so it wasn’t that big a deal.

This was a Black Diamond shopping experience. A 90 degree day during an aggressive thermal event. Which doesn’t sound that bad, but remember there is no AC, low ventilation and a lot of these structures built like greenhouses. Looking back at these photos, I’m surprised we survived this and looked cute in the process. GTB came with, but didn’t last long. Once we were free from the shackles of a logical mind we went fully feral.

Bestie and I were immediately seduced by the tapestries hanging in the entryway. We sadly had to admit we didn’t have 20 ft tall ceilings or a thousand euros, so we kept it moving.

I purchased vintage tassels in beautiful distressed shades of pink for my bedroom blackout curtains. Last September I spent a fortune rush shipping Jello molds from eBay for our Brooklyn Wedding Celebration, so I had to chuckle when I saw dozens upon dozens of great options at this market.

We spent the most time in Shop 47 where the selection was fabulous, and the atmosphere a welcome refuge. I tried on thigh high white Hermes boots which tested my eccrine glands as well as budget willpower. I ended up getting a 1940’s white cotton slip dress — perfect for this weather, super thin but not see-through (as the owner showed me through a magnifying glass) and a vintage olive color Alberta Ferretti mini skirt. I was really tempted by the Le Camille bags but ultimately resisted.

Energy and funds depleted, we stopped for a lunch at Le voltaire. They graciously seated us in front of the fan. Coke Zero brought me back to life and this ham melon salad blew my mind.

Properly fueled and back on the hunt, we took a chance on an unassuming little shop tucked away on a quiet side street across from the restaurant.

Another sign to follow your intuition! We found the perfect tapestries for our budget and wall size.

We made our way to the main area, and I was seduced by a €3,000 picture frame I immediately put back. This set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. Faire du lèche-vitrines ONLY. A fresh spring green Chanel bag, an 18th century bed hanging and lots and lots of scarves all tempted us but ultimately were left behind.

We headed to the subway and grabbed another water, is this what the World Cup players feel at the end of the week?

I showered and donned my latest purchase. I was trying to give WAG (knowing we’d likely be watching the game later that night) and made my way to meet up with a friend from my internship days.

It was so nice to see her and hear about her life. Since we first connected pre Instagram and when you’d buy a flip phone for travels abroad, it took some effort to track down a contact number for her.

Since we had not spoken in so long, and don’t get fed a highlight reel via any apps — it was really a lot to catch up on. I immediately remembered why we had connected. She is insanely passionate about design, has a strong point of view, and knew all the English slang and curse words. Back in 2012, she mentioned her love for Beacon’s Closet, and as I stood there in my American Apparel chiffon button-down, I felt an instant kinship.

We enjoyed a few cocktails at Jesus Paradis which has charming seating on a closed-off street behind a courtyard gate. When we first sat down she asked if I still lived in Chicago. Something that stunned me as I’ve been in NYC for 12 years now and its just so deeply ingrained in my personality and world view. She was thrilled at this development as she is a scholar of all TV shows that take place in NYC. I implored her to visit so I could show her around. We even discussed an apartment swap that could live in The Holiday cinematic universe.

I was having the best time catching up, and fascinated to hear the POV from a Parisian during the Paris Olympics, how those not staying in 4 star hotels are handling the heat, and of course TV (which she credits all knowledge of slang and bad words.) I remember loving Les Anges (a french reality show where the stars were trying to make it big in Hollywood) and being so sad I was missing Bethenny Frankel’s Talk Show (wow how times have changed) when I was last in France. I also remember watching Harry Potter in French with my host family’s son and laughing that the word for wand is Baguette.

I asked her honestly if I would cringe watching Emily in Paris — as someone who was a fish-out-of-water intern in Paris myself I just haven’t brought myself to it. To my surprise, she sang its praises — not the first person in my inner circle to do so (GTB also liked it)! I made a note to download these episodes for upcoming travel days. Writing this out, I think I should take a page out of her book and also rewatch Les Anges to get my French slang up to snuff.

We talked about topics we wouldn’t have touched as 22-year-olds including homeownership and retirement. She explained to me that in France, most people invest in real estate and not the stock market. Something I did not know, but quickly learned the phrase investir dans la pierre.

The French banking system makes it incredibly attractive to borrow money for real estate, but almost impossible to leverage for equities.

After spending the few months obsessing over retirement contribution catch-up it was eye opening to see this wasn’t a global phenomenon. It always helps to zoom out, and travel is the number one way to do that.

Connecting with someone I knew from this very specific time in my life gave me such joy. Seeing her creative work and hearing about her path filled me with pride. I’m so glad we connected and it pained me to have to leave for a 8:30pm dinner reservation.

I scurried off to Grand Coeur, passing the Pompidou on my way there. The ambiance was lovely and they mercifully gave us a waiter from the UK. We listened to the guys recap their day and had a leisurely meal.

Actually a little too leisurely, as the fellows left us to go watch the World Cup at The Frog & Rosbif before the meal was done. Bestie and I drank wine and ate dessert on our own before eventually making our way there as well.

It was Pride Weekend and the vein-like streets were pumping full of Spice Girls bops and horned up hotties. This sadly highly contrasted with the British Pub we watched the game at, but a group trip is about compromise. Sleepy and full I happily crawled into bed after doing 13,000 steps in the heatwave.

Sunday 6/28/26:

We Tetris’d our belongings and bodies and packed up all our stuff in the very tight quarters and checked out of the hotel. I really have come to love the ladies working there. Of course they never gave us a second towel — adding to the “we are family” feeling.

Off we go to the 11th arrondissement via the metro. We put in our names at Clamato which has been the top recommendation from the gourmands I trust. On the waitlist I see several 917 and 617 area codes which gives me even more confidence in this choice.

Awaiting our table we wander and decided to split a couple crepes in this effort to cross more French food off the list. While there I was introduced to one that wasn’t even on my radar: Breizh Cola. J’adore!

After lunch I navigated us on the metro to La Grande Épicerie de Paris. I didn’t know this until later, but we rode on one of the very last MP73 trains before they were all retired on July 8th. Something my transit nerd husband pointed out to me when writing this. And you know what, that is really cool that we were on one of its final rides.

La Grande Épicerie de Paris was the most overwhelming place I’ve ever been (complimentary) other than Don Quijote in Japan. Which is where I got the jelly sunscreen stick that I’ve been relying on for SPF face reapplication that doesn’t ruin makeup. I gave us a one hour timer, and let the shopping begin.

When we returned to our hotel, the two ladies holding down the fort at the front desk all weekend insisted on seeing our hauls. It was like a TikTok come to life and we all giggled and presented our choices.

We grabbed our bags, had a warm goodbye to nos sœurs and grabbed a drink at nearby Brasserie Dubillot.

Soon enough it was time to dine at Le Train Bleu, a reservation GTB had booked under the strong suggestion of Claude. We piled into an Uber van with all our bags and had a conversation about tableside service in restaurants while we made our way to the station. I’m curious, how do you readers feel about a table side guacamole or caesar salad? There were mixed feelings among the group, but my husband had the strongest voice of absolutely no table side service under any circumstances.

The restaurant within Gare de Lyon, named after the fancier version of the train journey we were about to embark on (Mediterranée Express AKA the Blue Train) was breathtakingly beautiful.

The interior hosts 41 enormous Belle Époque murals. Created for the 1900 Exposition Universelle, these sweeping frescoes depict the cities, landscapes, and iconic stops of the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean railway network, including Paris, Marseille, Nice, and Mont Blanc. So charming and on theme, it was giving me life after such a long day.

In 1901 when it opened it was a buffet (then called Buffet de la Gare de Lyon). It will be the closest to scratching the itch of Les Grands Buffets, which my husband, completely oblivious of the itinerary, asked if we were going to on this trip. I wish! Maybe someday this will make the agenda— along with the controversial Le Puy du Fou.

It was sweltering inside due to the heatwave. The one side of windows faced the glass enclosed train station which was essentially a greenhouse. I’m glad we forwent our fancy dining lewks in favor of breathable travel friendly options. This Farm Rio dress I nearly didn’t pack, was a powerhouse for me this trip. I wore it two of our three days in Paris. It’s airy cotton that sits away from the body due to the smocking. You don’t need to wear a bra and can also wear it as a skirt.

Speaking of heat, we were all deeply disturbed when the waiter (in a button down, bow tie and vest) rolled out a cart and started to flambé behind us. Side eyes were exchanged and polite attention was paid. We wondered if the table to our left or directly behind us had made this out-of-touch order.

It was to everyone's humor and horror, the plate was placed in front of my husband.

Gooped, gagged and completely flamboozled!

Credit to Claude for a fun dinner rec, but it failed to realize our train was leaving out of the neighboring station Gare d'Austerlitz. Now full of wine and red meat, we hauled our butts and overstuffed suitcases to the correct station. It seems we still have a little time before the robots completely take over.

Down a big ramp and over a bridge we go. I had an emotional reaction crossing over the Seine and seeing Institut Français de la Mode (IFM). In 2012 I toured it and greatly enjoyed their Comme des Garçons retrospective. I wish I had any photos of this. Take this as a sign to back things up and make photo books.

As an Agatha Christie head, a nocturnal train voyage seemed so adventurous and I was looking forward to this night train to Nice. I booked a "Private Space" (Espace Privatif) to have the entire six bunk compartment to ourselves and added our companions’ info so that we could be close by. Bestie and I half jokingly discussed having one compartment for us ladies to self tan and sticking the men in the other.

Boarding the train was hectic with little guidance. The car, compartment and bunk numbers were hard to navigate. We were in a different car than our friends. We were not permitted (c’est impossible!) to fold up the unused beds. There is no easy place to store luggage (there is space above the door - so if you are training for an ironman that might work for you). The bedding is a sleeping bag. Luckily it had air-conditioning. We did get six waters for booking out the entire compartment, but other than that my dreams of a fun night train were quickly dashed. Changing into my PJs, brushing my teeth and washing my face were herculean tasks in the small space.

Once I adjusted my expectations, I enjoyed some reclined screen time before settling into a night sleep free of any REM cycles.

In the morning I struggled again to brush my teeth and change, but enjoyed the sights of the Riviera out the window. We passed by palm trees, sunny terracotta and yellow houses tucked into the hills. As soon as I saw the aquamarine sea all my night train woes melted away and I was grateful to be in paradise at 9am.

I’m not the biggest fan of corporate lingo bleeding into one’s personal life but I do get down with quarterly goals. Ever since my esthetician said “If you can only do a few facials a year, do one each season” I knew there was merit behind those four-time-a-year milestones.

You can get a lot done in 90 days with focus. I was able to bring lunch to work and refrain from rideshares for all of January/February/March of 2026. This was enough to make a big difference without adopting a torturous lifestyle.

My goals for Q1 were straightforward:

1. Spend as little as possible (while remaining social)

2. Pay down debt

3. Meet the Roth IRA max before the deadline

Spoiler alert, I was able to accomplish all the goals. Which was shocking and no one is more stunned than me!

That being said, it took a ton of effort, focus, willingness to try new things and abstinence from old habits.

I mused at the end of my Lessons from a Low Spend Q1 post:

In Q2 I hope to explore if it’s possible to have your (money) cake and eat it too. Is it possible for financial planning to feel like a steady breath while still enjoying life? Will I lose my momentum without the pressure of the high stakes situation and condensed timeline? Time will tell! I’ll be sure to share.

Q2 Show and Tell:

Sooooo how is that steady financial yoga breath going? Well, it started with some goal setting: I came up with these goals to counteract some of the negative side effects of my austere Q1. If I’m honest, I was a bit miz and a bit obsessive for most of it.

Goals for Q2:

1. Think about money less

2. Find more sustained joy

3. Feel more connected to my body

Action items:

1. Shift from a ‘yo-yo diet-style’ approach for retirement savings to automated, steady contributions.

2. Send excess funds (that were previously going towards retirement catchup and debt pay off ) into a Hight Yield Savings Account for a vacation via direct deposit.

3. Invest both time and money into hobbies (new and old).

4. Invest both time and money into health and wellness (but actual, medically driven health and wellness, not just consumerism disguised as wellness).

5. Get out in those streets! Be more social. Make plans. Say yes to invites.

6. Ease up the discipline on spending. Prioritize convenience and freedom over price.

How it went:

At the end of every month, I categorize and analyze my spending. I’ve used Tiller since 2022 and love it. It is excel/sheets based. My husband uses Monarch — it is very visual if that is your thing —it doesn’t really matter what you use, more that you are consistent. In this process I manually tag everything either Positive, Neutral or Negative. So yes, I can tell you qualitatively how it went and it’s not just based on my vacation euphoria (I’m writing this on the plane, still elbow deep in cheese and wine.)

That being said, it’s really hard to measure “Sustained Joy” as a goal. I think I made major steps towards that, which I outline below along with steps towards the other more straight forward goals.

The Lifestyle Shift:

1. First off, enjoying the occasional Uber, iced matcha and midtown slop bowl felt absolutely luxurious!! Since these behaviors were completely banned in Q1 — they felt naughty and beyond indulgent. By abstaining from these for three months, I transformed these things in my brain from everyday occurrences to the pinnacle of luxury. This caused me to savor and appreciate them. I also noticed how they gave me more time and freedom. If taking a rideshare allowed me more time to spend with out of town guests - I did it. I bought last minute Amtrak tickets at the highest price, so that I could leave at a time that suited me in the moment. Skipping grocery runs and meal prep Sundays gave me hours back. I indulged in flowers at the grocery store — because it sparked joy and no other reason. I bought overpriced sunglasses at Moynihan train station just because I forgot mine at home. All these small behaviors made me feel both crazy and free. This Lana mindset, brought to you by three months of deprivation.

   

2. And what did this freedom and time go towards? Hobbies of course! Spending over $300 on gardening supplies felt absolutely bonkers, especially coupled with the fact that I had never gardened anything before. However it brought me so much joy and a whole new obsession. I’m glad I didn’t hold back. There is plenty of science based research on gardening bringing sustained joy, so you know I was all in. A massive meta-analysis of over 20 different global studies confirmed that gardening doesn't just feel good—it is directly linked to massive reductions in anxiety and depression, and significant spikes in overall life satisfaction.1 Psychologists call it ‘Attention Restoration Theory’—basically, the effortless fascination of watching something grow gives your brain a break from the exhausting, screen-focused attention of modern life, allowing for genuine, sustained mental recovery.2 I’d like to credit Sam Sweatpants for inspiring me and guiding me through my first gardening adventures. She provides this same encouragement and guidance in her guest post — so be sure to check that out.

3. Beyond gardening, I touched grass. Park days. Beach days. Nature walks. Farmers markets. Rooftop gardens. These things are low cost, but I did spend on convenience to reclaim my time for them. I sent out laundry, hired a housekeeper, got sandwiches at the bodegas and DoorDashed supper. This freed up my Sundays to stop and smell the roses.

4. I spent $100 on professional grade mermaid makeup (Press Multichrome Eyeshadow in Velvet Dreams & Loose Mulitchrome Eyeshadow in Krazy Kat) and a scale stencil. Shout out to Celeste Vanya at Manhattan Wardrobe Supply who walked me through everything (layers of setting spray is the secret). Add mermaid body art to the list of hobbies!

   

5. I woke up at 5:30am nearly every day to work on my Substack. I love this hobby, thank you to everyone on here expressing themselves — you inspire me so much <3

6. I bought two disposable film cameras. I’ve been having fun diving back into photography (I loved being in the darkroom in high school — all indie sleeze kids did at the time.) I appreciate the low risk/low commitment of both the Ilford ILFOCOLOR Rapid Single-Use (used for Coney Island) and the Kodak FunSaver (used for France). In 2025 I bought over a dozen FUJIFILM QuickSnap cameras for my various wedding season events, so I definitely stand by that option as well. Between the cameras themselves and getting the negatives scanned, this was easily $100 for a few snaps. However the delayed gratification and the way it makes you slow down and savor the shot is priceless. I think I’m ready to commit to a non disposable camera for Q3 if anyone has suggestions.

7. When invited to new things I said yes. Highlights include: Coney Island Mermaid Parade, Dom Pérignon: Expressions of Harmony launch, intergenerational dinner parties, brunches, the Pratt student fashion show, caviar bumps in the elevator, Cutlet Night and of course allllllll the birthday parties.

   

8. I co-hosted two gatherings. A rainy Memorial Day Party complete with a chili dog bar and The Knicks Game 3 viewing party. Sadly this was the least fun of all the Knicks games, but at least we had each other and plenty of pizza!

9. I met new people IRL! Grabbing coffee and drinks (something I wasn’t doing in Q1 because I was in the house saving money) with new faces was such a joy. These hours were very special to me and I’m so glad to be expanding my network with people who are expanders (I even learned that phrase from one of them).

   

10. I bought multiple concert tickets for September and October, without having others commit yet. This felt like such a flex, and I am looking forward to these shows, whoever ends up coming with me.

11. I spoiled the people I love. My husband, twin nephews, niece and handful of besties are all born in Q2 and I went all out. I did have to tell hubby that the Titanic Lego set was not in budget —but everything else fair game (he ended up with the PAN AM Lego). I increased my donations to Claire Valdez ahead of the primary and felt beyond pride and hope when she won. I gifted my new colleagues coffee gift cards at their six month mark. I supported Substack publications I believe in. I continued to send my aunt flowers. I had no guilt around this and I say it not to boast but to show that giving can bring so much sustained joy. It might even be the highest ROI (oh no more corporate lingo), IMHO!

    

Health & Wellness:

1. I went to talk therapy and physical therapy nearly every week despite the compounding co-pays.

2. I made an effort to fuel my muscles for that physical therapy strength training and resumed daily morning protein smoothies. I’m liking this new (to me) collagen powder but prefer my old stand by KOS unflavored protein powder. I did branch out and try the Raw Organic one, but the texture is not for me. Even the KOS one is a bit chalky, but at least the smoothie tastes like the fruit in it and not a strange artificial flavor. I plan to drop some smoothie recipes in an upcoming post, I have a few I really stand behind after a few months of experimenting.

   

3. I had two MRIs and an ultrasound done in Q2. I had been putting them off and my emotions were up and down surrounding them. Ultimately they were positive as now I have more info than I previously did, even if that information is disappointing. I plan to write a longer post about medical trauma so I won’t be super long winded here but I’m glad I prioritized this, though it was not fun - medical coverage in this country is a luxury and I’ll view it as such.

4. I danced a lot. I swam more than I expected to. I did Yin Yoga weekly. Though these were simple steps, they helped erode the negative beliefs I hold about my body. On my worst days I think it is only capable of betraying me, but I don’t feel that way when dancing, swimming or stretching.

   

The Financial Reality:

1. I set aside $4,000 for vacation. And I did this without much thought or effort. I set up direct deposit for $500 per paycheck in April and increase that to $1000 a paycheck mid May. I had it all go into a High Yield Savings Account to gain interest and keep me from spending it.

2. I had some measured splurges ahead of my trip and feel good about every one of them.

   

3. I felt completely unencumbered by money on this vacation. The hotels, flights, meals, activities were all accounted for in the budget. There was even plenty left over for shopping. An activity I didn’t indulge in all of Q1. Early in the trip we went to Les Puces — arguably my favorite shopping in the world. I got fabulous stuff including an antique tapestry, dusty pink vintage tassels and a white cotton dress from the 1940s. Mid trip, we went to La Grande Épicerie de Paris for a real life supermarché sweep of delicious spices and tinned fish. On the last day of the trip, I did a big pharmacie haul. I’ll break these down more in a recap post. All of that is to say, I didn’t have to talk myself in and out of purchases the whole time, because I wasn’t shopping out of boredom or in efforts to self soothe. It was intentional, focused, within budget and joyful and that felt so good.

   

4. I earned some side income! I made $200 from Poshmark, $200 from ShopMy, $80 from Amazon and $3,000 from Substack in Q2. A real shock, as you can see in my Lessons from a Low Spend Q1 I was propositioning readers to be my 3rd paid subscriber. I’m really grateful for anyone who has bought something through an affiliate link, subscribed or shared my writing. It means a lot to me that this money was earned through honest and transparent advice/musings. If there are ways I can provide more value on here — I am all ears.

5. My net worth reached all-time highs in Q2. In fact, it’s up 30k from the start of the year. This all happened with little to no added effort from me in the last three months. My systems are on autopilot now. I say this not to brag but to inspire. I was in a bad spot six months ago, so if you are too — you can turn it around.

What didn’t work:

1. I still think about money a lot. In my defense it is substantially less than a few months ago! I realize how hypocritical it is to have this as a goal then dedicate an entire eight hour flight to reflect on spending. I just can’t help it! Also I feel strongly there should be more approachable content around personal finances that centers women and allows room for nuance. If you are craving more of that, I suggest the two podcasts: Debt Heads (they just published new epsiodes!) and Money Feels.

2. I underutilized both my gym and Regal membership. Saying yes to everything and traveling on the weekends leaves a lot less time for those things. I probably won’t cancel either, just feel a tiny bit guilty about it.

3. I didn’t use the $75 SAKs Amex Platinum Credit before it expired. Hyper focused Q1 Lucy wouldn’t have missed that.

4. ‘Seeking Joy’ does leave one tired and pulled in a lot of different directions. I double booked myself for the first time in years, multiple times. I bit off more than I could chew. I did things tired and hungover. I left a rave at 2:30am early Sunday in Bushwick to catch a 9am train to my niece’s Mermaid Birthday Party in Maryland for later that day. While this was a fun weekend, come Tuesday I was dying. I worried I was neglecting my plants. I slept a lot less. I wasn’t always totally present. That being said, I had a very joyous quarter and regret none of it.

   

5. As a shock to absolutely no one, I didn’t heal my body and my relationship with my body in 90 days. But I feel like I made some baby steps! There is a lot more work to do here, especially in Q3 & Q4 so I’ll just keep plugging away.

6. I didn’t have much solitude and focus time to brush up on my French before the trip. I wish I had prioritized this more.

7. Similarly, I’m so behind on all my TV shows! Love Island USA and RHORI sting the most. Avoiding spoiler content online has me looking like this:

8. My apartment decor and furnishings are not where I want them to be. Funds and energy did not go towards this at all. If you see my mirror selfies on Notes — you know my living room is just an empty room with a rug and has been for a while. I’ve been very inspired by both RG and Morgan Ellis - and will shift focus on to this for Q3.

   

What’s next: Goals for Q3

1. It’s obvious that the living room needs attention. I’m excited to share I’ll be doing a creative project with The Fine Print soon that centers around upgrading this blank-ish canvas.

2. At the end of July I’m going to an annual tea party hosted by my in-laws. I want to test out both recipes and outfits before then. This kind of whimsy maxxing I just know will bring sustained joy.

3. Continuing to develop my green thumb. Hopefully all my plants didn’t die while I was in France. God willing, I’ll be entering my Dahlias in the local fair in August — so stay tuned on that adventure :)

4. Continue getting in touch with my body. Dance. Swim. Decorate it with glitter scales. It’s looking likely I’ll be making a surgery plan and lock into strength training ahead of that.

5. Grow an emergency fund. Two years ago I had $10K in an emergency fund. Then an emergency happened. I desperately need to replenish this but haven’t prioritized it yet. I plan to use the tricks from Q1 that worked best to fuel this: direct deposit, home beauty treatments, cheap meals and budget hangs.

6. Plan and go on my solo trip to Korea. This will be to research for “Is a 48hr Glow Up Worth It?” a follow-up to “Is a 30K Glow Up Worth It?”. Please, if anyone has suggestions, let me know. But it has to be accomplishable in a weekend and I have to look decent enough to be at in-person work meetings in the following days.

   How do I distill these ideas into one mantra for Q3?

   Get money, win ribbons, reconstruct the physical vessels of my body and my living room

When Lucy asked me to write about gardening for Lucite Vision, my first thought was what could I possibly teach anyone — I’ve only been doing this a few years, in a small city yard, hardly a homestead. But whenever a friend comes over, I can talk at length about every little bean sprout and flower bud. So while I can’t teach you anything you couldn’t Google, I can tell you about my journey: what’s worked, and what most definitely didn’t.

A few things to know about me: I’m an artist by training, a tech worker by trade, and a chronic hobby-collector (painting, ceramics, woodworking, stained glass — the list goes on). My mom’s side of the family are artists. My dad’s side were builders, mechanics, and butchers in the Bronx. I’ve always felt like a mix of both — which is maybe why gardening, this weird combination of artistic expression and manual labor, clicked for me the way it did.

Year 1, 2024:

If it ain’t broke, don’t burn yourself out.

We toured this house the week after Christmas, when it was -10 degrees and the sun was setting at 4pm. I had only ever seen the house in the dead of winter, so I had no idea what, if anything, would grow. If it ain’t broke, don’t burn yourself out. In early 2024, my husband and I bought a house built in 1895 in as-is condition. We had a lot to do inside the house our first year, I really didn’t have the bandwidth to worry about the outside.

We toured this house the week after Christmas, when it was -10 degrees and the sun was setting at 4pm. I had only ever seen the house in the dead of winter, so I had no idea what, if anything, would grow.

I declared early on that I would see what was already growing and worry about the outside of the house next year. With one exception. One of my first purchases after closing was two raised garden beds — when I was renting I'd grown cherry tomatoes and peppers in pots on a deck, and I was ready to finally have real outdoor space. I bought seedlings from a local nursery, mixed in marigolds to deter pests, and without knowing it, stumbled into something called "companion planting."

I decided to put the vegetable garden in the front yard in raised beds. There's something I love about having a front yard vegetable garden. It's a little unexpected, and I know it's not for everyone, but the little kids pointing at my garden gnomes, the neighbors stopping to chat, the dog walkers slowing down for a second look — that makes it more than worth it to me.

Year 1 recap: Modest success

Successes

• Gave myself permission to ignore the outside of the house and just observe

• Inherited roses in the back, hostas and ferns in the front — not bad for free plants

• Accidentally stumbled into companion planting without knowing it had a name

• 2024 MVP: Cherry tomatoes (Chocolate Cherry variety) — more yield, sweeter, less acidic

Failures

• Cabbage moths: those cute little white butterflies will lay eggs on your kale and the larvae will enjoy a free lunch at your expense

• The city-owned tree out front looked great for sun in winter, leafed out in spring, and threw way more shade than I expected

Plans for next season

• More raised beds

• Move sun-loving veggies to a better spot

• Start thinking about landscape planting

Year 2: 2025
Fine. Flowers.

Last season was really the first time I started to care about flowers. Before that, I felt like If I was going to spend money and do work, I wanted a tangible outcome (years of quarterly reviews will do that to you). I could justify lavender, chamomile, echinacea — at least those have a purpose. Never mind that I wasn't actually going to make tea or tinctures or whatever, the point is that I could. Flowers purely for their beauty? That felt like a luxury I wasn't ready to commit to.

When I bought this house, I inherited rose bushes. I was nervous — everyone says roses are hard. But a little googling, some pruning in the fall, and the occasional splash of leftover black coffee, and apparently that's enough. They grew. They bloomed. And the day I cut my first bouquet from my own yard, I felt like Martha Fucking Stewart. Nothing makes me feel more capital C Cunt than assembling a flower arrangement before friends come over.

Emboldened by my roses, I decided to grow more flowers. Zinnias were having a moment on TikTok last year, and I drank the Kool-Aid. I bought a few seed packets from the hardware store, threw them down in front of my roses, and waited. Touted as easy to grow from seed and a "cut and come again" flower, they were worth a shot — and soon I had an overflowing bed of zinnias. Plus I added some lavender and dwarf sunflowers in pots on the patio.

But making bouquets had another, bigger, better side effect. Picking out blooms made me actually pay attention to what was happening in the garden — checking for pests, noticing weeds, deadheading spent blooms, literally stopping to smell the flowers. That shift, from puttering around outside to actually noticing, reacting, googling, trying to improve things, that's when gardening stopped being an afterthought and started being a hobby.

Meanwhile, I expanded the vegetable garden with two more raised beds out front. This year I was determined to grow a fig tree and zucchini — I have such strong memories of my grandmother cooking zucchini flowers once a summer, and the fig trees I’d see all over the Bronx, wrapped up with a bucket on top to survive the winter. It felt like a way to tap into my New York Italian roots, so I gave it a shot.

I also got more intentional about the actual planning of the garden. I used online guides to pre-plan my beds before buying seedlings, learned that leafy greens like arugula prefer spring and fall (summer heat made them bolt and wilt last year), and moved my peppers to a sunnier spot. In the fall I planted bulbs for next season and harvested hardneck garlic, beets, and onions. Oh, and did you know you can grow your own saffron? Because you can, and I did!

Year 2 recap: Welp, I guess gardening is a hobby now.

Successes

• Deadheading and pruning actually helps flowers grow — making bouquets is, technically, gardening

• First intentional attempt at seasonal planting

• 2025 MVP: Swiss Chard - bug free, low drama, grew great all season. Planting more this year.

Failures

• The fig tree did not survive the winter. Grew exactly one miniature fig

• Neither did the garlic. Same story, same poorly insulated planter, same mistake.

• Zucchini: powdery mildew + not enough sun = a lot of sad looking leaves and zero fruit

• Strawberries grew for a while, then shriveled and died without producing anything.

Plans for the next season

• If I couldn’t keep it alive, I’m not growing it again — not until I know what went wrong and have an actual plan

• Try growing more from seed: specifically for root veggies (carrots, beets, radish)

• Move planting locations around to make better use of the sunnier spots

Year 3: 2026

The garden expands (obviously)

Last year, while walking my dog, I started paying closer attention to what my neighbors had growing. Every time I spotted something interesting or thriving I'd snap a picture and mentally file it away for my own garden. The problem? I had run out of space. The solution? Make more space.

This spring my husband and I added a border garden along one of our backyard fences, connecting it to the existing rose garden. We laid some brick pavers for a little wall and filled the space with a variety of perennials. I love the way it turned out and I can't wait to see what it looks like in three years when everything has had time to fill in and spill over.

We also rearranged the sitting area, picked up some new containers, and made space for more annuals so there’s always something in bloom to swap in and out by season. And I decided to try growing some dahlias.

Dahlias can produce anywhere from 20 to 60 blooms a season, and cutting them actually encourages new growth — making them a cut flower gardener’s dream. The very big catch for zone 6 is that they can’t survive the winter in the ground, but you can dig up the tubers and store them inside until spring, or bring the whole container in. I’m going the container route. We’ll see how it goes.

2026 recap (as of late June): Still so much growing season left.

Early Successes

• New border garden is in and already looking good.

• Best roses I’ve ever had — I thought I’d pruned them too late this spring, but maybe it was exactly the right time

• Grew snap peas, carrots, radish, and beets from seed for the first time

Early Failures

• Aphids on the rosebuds and peppers.

• Used neem oil on the peppers in full sun and torched the leaves. Switched to Bon-neem oil, which is apparently gentler on peppers and roses.

• Planted the entire pack of radish seeds without thinning them out. Got some yield but learned my lesson — the seeds will grow, you do not need to plant extra

Three years in, I am by no means an expert. But, I have made enough mistakes to have some opinions. If I could go back in time and give myself advice, it would be this:

• Be patient. Delayed gratification is excruciating. It gets easier, but barely.

• You will go out in the heat and you will be bitten by bugs. Wear pants and socks in the garden, even when it’s hot.

• Plants have a lot of different names — look them up when you are at the nursery, you may be looking for something by a different name. (’Scarlet Bee Balm’ aka ‘Red Bergamot’ aka ‘Monarda didyma’)

• Trying to identify what’s a weed vs. something you planted is a challenge I do not wish upon my worst enemy. Your phone’s reverse image search is a lot less helpful than it should be.

• Too keep your garden blooming all year, visit your plant nursery four times a year — early spring, early summer, late summer, late fall — and plant a thing or two for each season.

• You will not remember what you planted. No matter how much you think you will. Label everything.

• The garden bed in front of your north facing house is a shade garden. You need to plant what will grow, not what you think looks best.

If I can leave you with one piece of advice, it’s this:

The secret ingredient is time.

There’s an expression about perennials “the first year they sleep, the next year they creep, and the third year they leap.” It’s meant to remind you that plants can take years to establish before they really thrive. But the longer I sit with it, the more it feels like a map of my own experience. Year one, I was sleeping — observing, barely touching the outside of the house, one raised bed, just seeing what was already there. Year two, I was creeping — getting intentional, growing flowers, making bouquets, actually paying attention. And year three? I think I might be leaping. The garden is starting to feel like itself. Plants filling in, things I put in the ground two years ago finally doing what I hoped they would. I’m more confident about how to care for what I have, and what I don’t know I’m learning the only way that really works — by getting it wrong first.

So, is gardening the antidote to today’s world of instant gratification? Maybe? But I think it’s bigger than that. It’s a creative practice that doesn’t care about your timeline, your aesthetic vision, or how many seeds you planted. It just asks you to show up, pay attention, and wait. If you feel even a little called to it, I’d say that’s enough reason to start.

So here is another love letter to NYC, as I walk you through another perfect weekend in the Big Apple.

Samantha P. preaches about carrying weekend energy into Monday. I took that idea and front loaded it by kicking off the weekend with a Thursday night family FaceTime. It was great checking in with everyone across the country and it lifted the mood for the weekend ahead.

I took this day off work for arguably the best reason ever: to help bestie find her wedding gown. Her sister was flying in for the weekend and the appointments were locked in. A true feast for the eyes and shopping marathon. My heart (and shortly my camera roll) couldn’t be fuller.

This itinerary highly contrasted from my own wedding gown shopping journey, so I was eager to see the other side of things. That Friday, we went to Monique Lhuillier, Vera Wang and Kleinfeld Bridal with a pit stop at Zabar’s for a pre-wrapped chicken salad sandwich that rivaled airport prices. If there is interest, I can write a whole other post on wedding dress shopping in NYC - I have a lot to say.

And the first thing I’d mention is no one offers you champagne! So as the day wrapped up and I hit Post on a 328 images to the Shared Album, I was delighted to made my way to Happy Hour in honor of Connor Creagan’s Bday.

We started the night with martinis and burgers at Julius, a place I haven’t been in years but immediately remembered why I love it. An older crowd due to the historic nature and cash only policy (Gen Z are notably scared of cash) with places to sit and calories to soak up the booze. The staff is to the point and attentive - very refreshing for the LESer.

Y’all already know Connor is a man of many talents and interests so it shouldn’t surprise you that after a few initial drinks we made our way to Marie’s Crisis. I’ve heard about this spot for years but have never actually been due to my hang-ups with musical theatre.

It was actually very different than I expected. I was picturing a grand piano with heavy theatre-like drapes in a dark room. It’s actually rather well-lit with Christmas lights and the piano is an upright. The crowd was more diverse than I expected, and notably unstylish (complimentary) which was a nice break from the scene-y places of the West Village. The vibes were joyful and nerdy. I had two cocktails in plastic cups (also cash only, which helped me stick to my budget). They played a lot of songs from this musical Wicked which I had no prior knowledge of. I suggest they increase their PR budget or perhaps collab with a few brands/influencers for some much needed visibility.

Eventually Ryan and I were able to chime in for Mamma Mia which was a ton of fun.

When they started to play Disney songs, I made like Cinderella and disappeared at midnight. In hindsight, this was a misstep because the group ended up at a (potentially haunted?) private karaoke room later in the night. If you’ve been here since day one, you know my New Year’s resolution is to do more karaoke. A goal I’ve shamefully made no progress on so far.

I awake SO. HUNGOVER.

Maybe it was a good thing there wasn’t champs at the dress appointments! Two martinis and two vodka sodas were more than enough for me. I don’t drink much these days, but I saw something recently that argued the effects of isolation and stress can have a larger net-negative than physical effects of alcohol. I try to keep that in mind as I alternate from thinking “I’m going to die” and “I’m going to puke.”

My lovely husband fetches me some elixirs: Cucumber Lime Gatorade and a Matcha. Those, along with a long hot shower, heal me.

As I step outside, late and flustered for day two of bridal shopping, I notice a team setting up a floral wall for some sort of pop-up. Maybe they could tell I needed a lift and graciously gifted me some stems.

I ran them back inside then called an Uber to Spina Bridal. I had only ever been there for a disappointing Sample Sale, so you can imagine how blown away I was when we were greeted by a Say Yes to the Dress Alum, given slippers, and full reign over the multi-level store. Maybe it was the hangover but a few of the dresses my friend tried on made me incredibly emotional (complimentary).

After the appointment, we Ubered to Cakes by Klein to pick up a tasting trio. While they thawed out, we had a pizza lunch with wine. With that hair of the dog, the hangover was now a distant memory.

Totally horrified at the fact that we had received no Champagne yesterday, my husband set up some for the cake tasting. We dove into the three flavors. It was super fun and yummy. On our sugar high we mused how there should be an option where you can more easily mix and match the cakes/fillings/frosting to which my husband said, “so like Dunkaroos?” Yes. A new multi-million dollar idea: fancy adult wedding cake Dunkaroos™.

Speaking of this champagne drought, the universe must have heard my complaints about these dry appointments because I just got invited to the launch party for Dom Pérignon: Expressions of Harmony this June.

It turns out they are pulling off something incredibly rare: simultaneously unveiling three distinct vintages—the Vintage 2017 (born from a historically hot, tumultuous year), the Vintage 2008 Plénitude 2 (P2) which has been aging on the lees for 15 years, and the ultra-elegant Rosé Vintage 2010, which apparently pushes the boundaries of ‘pinot noir radicality.’

I’m excited to try them all and of course report back.

Ahead of our cake and gab session, I set an alarm for when we needed to leave for our last appointment. I’m so glad I did because time flew by! Before we knew it, it was time to get on the subway for the Oscar de la Renta appointment.

I was the most excited about this one, as I have seen none of their dresses IRL during my own shopping journey. The space was great and they had some serious hi-tech lighting. Ultimately I was more impressed with their After Party looks and Ready-to-Wear than the bridal gowns. But, in the words of Tamera Judge “THAT’S MY OPINIONNNN”

I guess it’s a blessing to be underwhelmed by the highest price point option. Some of the fabrics were really beautiful, I just think they read safe and a bit boring. I also feel like I’ve seen the same cut-out floral ball gown on so many high profile brides, it doesn’t feel new or exciting anymore.

At this point I had put over 800 photos and videos in the Shared Album. What once started as a joyful slice of chocolate cake started to feel a bit like the below:

Knowing I was likely not the only one feeling overwhelmed, I suggested a debrief at Loews Regency Bar due to its close proximity and iconic NY history. The drinks were $27 but the people watching and complimentary snacks made it more than worth it. I was shocked to learn that the place Tom D'Agostino chose to step out on The Countess was a corner intersection of two high-traffic streets, framed by massive, wrap-around windows. The antonym for discretion.

I left the sisters once again to go party with Connor, making my way to Bushwick. The casual outdoor patio and late night tacos shared with actors and artists contrasted beautifully from the Park Avenue mother daughter (or was it daughter mother?? so hard to tell) duos drinking next to us Uptown. I sprung for an Uber home (btw I took more Ubers this weekend than I did all of 2026) and marveled at the view from the Williamsburg Bridge. That shit never gets old.

I slept in. It was heavenly.

I scrolled on my phone. It was divine.

Sam came over for bagels, to yap and borrow a battery bank. It was so nice to hear about his move and despite the inevitable hiccups, he was in very good spirits.

It was an absolute JOY to see Dua Lipa’s courthouse ceremony look that morning. We of course had to break it down in our Yap time. I love a suit moment. I love a statement hat. My one critique is I would have omitted the statement buttons or the necklace. IMHO they are fighting a bit. I LOVE the bouquet. Though a lot lower budget than Dua, my courthouse ceremony look easily gets the most compliments of any of my wedding looks. Here is a little BTS of how I also ended with a skirt suit and a statement hat:

I was so thrilled with how it all came together in the end. I’d love another occasion to wear this exact outfit, but I am not quite sure what that would be. Leave ideas (and invites) in the comments.

ANYWAY back to the bride at hand. I got a bit mixed up about the time and arrived late to the appointment at Berta. It was fine as there were not any top contenders here, though I was particularly charmed by a Rococo-esque option that would be best suited for a winter wedding in Paris.

I am shocked to say that someone even as wedding and fashion obsessed as me was starting to hit a wall. I can’t imagine how taxing it was for the BTB!

We grabbed bubble tea and pastries before our last appointment of the weekend at Lee Petra Grebenau. I had no prior knowledge of this designer so I didn’t really know what to expect. It was a private appointment in an absolutely charming space. Turns out Spina Bridal used to be here and Lee took it over when Spina relocated. It’s a small bridal world I guess.

After the appointment we celebrated the conclusion with a salad nearby. The final images were posted to the shared album, which totaled 1067 items.

The ladies swung by to pick up the leftover cake, and when they left I went into a Sunday Scary Spiral™. I did two loads of laundry, cleaned the house and made this garlic miso cabbage with the last of my homemade bone broth. It felt like penance for the three days of frivolous joy.

Orange you glad it’s Monday???

We need to end on a better note than braised cabbage and laundry, so here is my fun Monday fit. During my Q1 decluttering, I found these orange Gucci loafers I got a Tokio7 years back. I’m determined to wear them more this summer and luckily they go well with the Knicks fever that is sweeping the city.

Fitness wise, I’m in a muscle building phase right now. I may dive a bit deeper into this in another post if there is interest. For lunch I treat myself to a three treasures bowl from Sunrise Mart for the gains.

The work day passes, and that evening I’m grateful to finally sink into my couch. Eventually, I tuck myself into bed and dream of the Perfect Weekend gone by.

Earlier this year, like many others with shiny new resolutions, I did Dry January. I thought, hell, it’ll be good for my liver and my wallet to take a break for a second and capitalize on many New Yorkers’ biggest expense: their apartment.

It was around this time that, in a temporary deal with Amazon MGM Studios, Netlfix released every single James Bond movie…

Now, I grew up with Pierce Brosnan as my Bond (hubba hubba), and played Goldeneye on Nintendo 64 so much that I can still navigate the Egyptian level with my eyes closed.. (In a full circle moment, there’s actually a new James Bond video game, 007: First Light, coming out today!)

So, out of nostalgia and curiosity I thought, OK, let me watch all of the Pierce Brosnan James Bond movies. I had a vague memory of what Goldeneye was about, and knew that Rosamund Pike was floating around there somewhere.

So I watched all four and boy did they scratch an itch I didn’t realize I had, quenching a latent thirst I had for action that was at once campy and highly self-serious with a character who was so wonderfully reliably the same.

With that in mind, and with the resolution to stay in my apartment and not spend money on booze, I embarked on my own mission: to watch every single James Bond movie in order. Part of it was out of convenience how often is a 25-film franchise available on a single streaming platform? And partly because it was kind of random. It always tickled me when I told people that I was watching every Bond movie and they’d ask with a laugh, “Wait, Connor, what?”

Also, I wanted to get to the bottom of why James Bond endures. This rather chauvinistic drunk who usually screws up whatever mission he’s on for the sake of one of the largest imperial governments the world has ever known. What’s that all about? How did I end up playing a video game inspired by a story written over 30 years prior? Was the International Man of Mystery a mystery that could be solved?

I think a large part of it is that while we value novelty and surprise, as consumers we also love patterns and formulas. Just look at Law & Order, Grey’s Anatomy etc. We tune in because while we don’t know what will happen, we can trust that it will happen.

With that in mind, the challenge of course is how to make a franchise feel new and surprising while still hitting all those familiar beats we love and expect? Maybe the best way to approach this is to go over what I think are the most must-have moments, the tenets if you will, in order to tease out the criteria for the perfect Bond movie.1

As most of us know, each movie has a cold open with some action to set the stage. Whether it be Pierce Brosnan bungee jumping off of a dam and using a grappling hook to pull himself down to a secret base (sure, why not) in Goldeneye (1995) or Sean Connery making his getaway in a leather football helmet and jetpack in Thunderball (1964), these pre-credit sequences are indispensable – duh!

However, a classic gag which apparently has been dispensable since For Your Eyes Only (1981)2 is the moment when Bond returns to the office after his near-death opening adventure and casually throws his hat on the coatrack before flirting with the receptionist, Moneypenny. What I love so much about this it epitomizes the core contrasts of the franchise: explosive missions and office politics, drama and comedy, suit jackets and jet packs. Mondays, am I right?

Sticking to the humor and camp elements of James Bond, the next pillar that holds up this iconic mantle is, in my opinion, a big ridiculous super-weapon. And I mean, ridiculous. No Time to Die (2021) is the closest in the recent pictures to get after this, with Rami Malek’s viral nanobots that can target people based on their DNA. Nano-bots?! Great! This is where the Timothy Dalton films fall short for me. Sure they invented “liquid cocaine” in License to Kill (1989) but like… who needs that? And don’t get me started on The Living Daylights (1987), where a crooked Soviet general and a crooked American general used diamonds to buy opium to sell weapons illegally. Like, I’m pretty sure the CIA did that already.

When it comes to super-weapons, nothing beats a good ol’ fashion laser, preferably if it’s in space. Of course there’s the iconic laser beam in Goldfinger (1964) (“Do you expect me to talk?” “No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!”) and The Solex Agitator solar cannon in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) is sufficiently eccentric. But one of the best has to be the satellite laser in Diamonds Are Forever (1971) which used its diamond-encrusted dish (gorgeous) to harness the sun’s rays into a heat beam. Now we cookin’. I think my all time favorite though, mostly because it’s part of the fabric of one of the silliest Bond movies, is the “Icarus” laser in Die Another Day (2002). That whole movie is a hoot. Like, what do you mean the son of a North Korean general got plastic surgery to look like a white guy (played by Dame Maggie Smith’s son!?) and then built an ice palace in Iceland (where else?) only to melt said ice palace with his satellite heat ray, Icarus, in order to drown Halle Berry who is then saved by Pierce Brosnan in his Aston Martin which, naturally, can turn invisible.

Before leaving super-weapons, I have to give a shout out to SPECTRE’s “Bird One” spacecraft in You Only Live Twice (1967), which, you guessed it, effectively swallowed up U.S. and Soviet spaceships in space. So dumb and so fun.

You Only Live Twice is also a perfect example of another core tenet of the James Bond franchise: the evil lair. Hidden within a volcano, this is arguably the most iconic lair3, with an adorable internal monorail to traffic Blofeld, his cat, and his hundreds(?) of employees around to conduct their evil business. Also, not to get off topic but like… what’s the 401k like for working in an evil lair? After watching over 53 hours of James Bond, it struck me that the villains literally employ so many people. Do they have health insurance? What is the commute like to a volcanic island? Did everyone apply through LinkedIn? What is everyone typing up on those evil computers anyways? Evil emails? I digress.

I also have to give it up for the lair in my favorite Bond movie, The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), where a billionaire with webbed fingers and a passion for marine biology lived in his shiny black and rather chic submersible lair, The Atlantis. When it comes to lairs, the more maritime the better. Think of it as a nod to the original lair in the first picture, Dr. No (1962), although that was just a private island off the coast of Jamaica (respectful yawn).

Now speaking of super-weapons and evil lairs, what is a Bond villain without a weird-ass henchman? And I’m not talking about the Mischka Twins in Octopussy (1983) or Knick Knack in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), those guys are just twins and a vertically challenged butler. I’m talking about the henchman with random, usually-metal, and always-deadly accessories. Like Odd Job’s hat in Goldfinger (1964) or Mr. Hinx from Spectre (2015), who used his stainless steel manicure to gouge out eyeballs. To have a perfect Bond movie, you got to have someone like my favorite, Jaws, the 7 foot giant with metal veneers so strong he could rip your freakin’ jugular out. On top of that, if you watch Moonraker (1979), you’ll see that he’s more than just a pretty face.

Now as we know, James Bond is no stranger to pretty faces. Or henchman. And sometimes they’re one and the same. Easily the best dressed person to ever fight Bond on the Eiffel Tower (or anywhere) only to end up in bed with him is Grace Jones in A View to a Kill (1985). And Rosamund Pike as the treacherous sword-fighting Bond girl in Die Another Day (2002) is just muah. For me, the perfect Bond movie needs a snatched femme fatale who doesn’t take nothing from nobody.

And the baddies abound! People forget that Michelle Yeoh was as steamy as she was intrepid in Tomorrow Never Dies (1995), and also that Denise Richards played a nuclear physicist named Christmas in The World is Not Enough (1999). Then there’s Barbara Bach, who is one of the reasons The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) is one of my all-time favorites. Also turns out that Barbara is married to Ringo Starr! Go figure.

As we come to the end of this article (and yes, it ends, I promise) it seems fitting to highlight another core pillar of the perfect James Bond film: the opening credits. When I was a kid watching James Bond, I was bored to tears by these. I thought, the credits are what I skip at the end of the movie, what are they doing up here?! But now I get it. Honestly, in spite of (or thanks to) their simplicity, the opening credits for From Russia with Love (1963) remain some of the most effective for me: jewel tone text projected onto lithe bodies shrouded in darkness – slay. Also, as an honorable mention Live and Let Die (1973) has some pretty insane credit sequence.

Live and Let Die also has one of the best theme songs by none other than Sir Paul McCartney. And if you ask me, the perfect Bond film needs a great theme song. Shirley Bassey undoubtedly holds the trophy for the most iconic song with not one, but two classics: Goldfinger and Diamonds are Forever. I would even wager that the Bond franchise was in a good theme song drought for 38 years until Adele came to the rescue with Skyfall (2012). I’m still rooting for Lana Del Rey to her own 007 song, but in the meantime I’m happy to hear her singing the theme for 007: First Light.

Which brings us to the final and most crucial criteria for the perfect James Bond movie. Above the hat on coatrack gag, the super-weapons, lairs, henchmen, badass ladies, opening credits, and theme songs, a Bond movie cannot cut the mustard without his gadget-wielding quartermaster, Q, and the flirty yet incredulous receptionist, Moneypenny.

It is largely due to their absence in Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace (2008) that those movies were such snoozefests. Needless to say I was so relieved when Skyfall not only brought them back, but brought them both back with a bit of a twist.

Sure, M and Felix deserve shoutouts, but without Q and Moneypenny Bond loses his personality, and just becomes a generic womanizing action hero who’s actually kind of bad at his job and suffering from a pretty gnarly drinking problem. However, with Moneypenny and Q he’s… well… he’s still all of those things, but at least they “take the piss” so to speak. They bring his faults down from the lofty heights of character development into the charmed eye-roll of “oh, here we go again.” And trust, Bond needs them. Moneypenny and her charm keeps his ego in check, while Q and his gadgets keep him alive.

And I think that’s what it comes down to. 007 has endured for over half a century because ultimately he is a sum of really good parts. He would be nothing without everyone else. Maybe that’s the secret. That Bond is really just a suit, animated by the people around him. So yes, we could wonder and predict who will be the next Bond, and exchange ideas on how to freshen things up (I think the next Bond should be bi), but ultimately realize that whoever is behind the wheel of that Aston Martin is just an abstraction without their gals. It’s a humbling truth that it’s really only in this constellation with his comrades that the International Man of Mystery becomes Bond… James Bond.

without further ado, let’s start with:

Professional Florist Florals

I didn’t have a rigid geographical boundary in mind when we started wedding planning. I was open to exploring, so we looked at venues in Massachusetts, New York, New Mexico and on a whim I contracted Michelle from Waterlily Weddings to do venue research in Ireland.

What arrived was a Google Drive link to dozens of photos and videos of a historic village on the canal. It had a lily pond, apple orchard, climbing ivy and heaps of hydrangeas. The ceremony would take place in the orangery with exposed stone adorned with an ancient fig tree. I instantly fell in love. The nearby canal walk is lush with wild vegetation. I was previously considering Ireland as a ‘what-if’ but this venue convinced me it was not a pipe dream. (Side note, it’s currently for sale for 24 million euros so if this Substack really takes off - you know what I’ll be doing with the money!)

It was so naturally beautiful and had such a clear point of view, I wanted the florals to take inspiration from these existing elements. I worked with The Garden, as they were already on my radar from their beautiful Powerscourt shop next to where I picked out my engagement ring. Below are images and takeaways from that experience along with an interview with the talented Róisín from The Garden. Enjoy!

Róisín from The Garden generously provided some insight on inspiration, budget tips, and floral focused life:

Lucy: What are your primary sources of inspiration right now?

Róisín: When I’m looking for wedding inspiration, I always start with the landscape and surroundings. I think it helps anchor the style of flowers and how they should feel within a space. When I’m not working, I really enjoy visiting gardens and seeing how plants, trees, shrubs, and bulbs naturally work together. Architecture is another big source of inspiration for me — I’m really drawn to shape, texture, and atmosphere.

Lucy: What can a client do to get inspired for floral design and communicate their vision with you?

Róisín: Pinterest is usually where it starts. It’s a great tool for gathering inspiration and helping clients understand what styles, colours, or overall feeling they’re drawn to.

In the spirt of transparency, here is my Pinterest for this event:

Lucy: How do you approach mood boards to ensure the floral identity feels cohesive with the client’s larger story?

Róisín: I usually start with season and colour first. Invitations and stationery are often a lovely starting point, along with the bride’s dress, the groom’s suit, and the bridesmaids’ dresses, which can all help guide the palette. The venue itself is also really important — the landscape, architecture, and overall atmosphere all help influence the direction of the flowers and styling.

Seasonality is also really important. We always look at what’s naturally growing at that time of year to create something that feels connected to the setting and season.

Lucy: How does the slow, seasonal nature of working with plants impact your creative process?

Róisín: We try to work with as many Irish-grown organic flowers as possible, which means adapting to what’s naturally available throughout the seasons. We also try to work sustainably by using flower frogs or chicken wire where possible.

I love arrangements that feel natural and organic, where the flowers are allowed to move and breathe.

Lucy: For brides looking to maximize their floral budget, where would you recommend splurging and where can they be more minimal?

Róisín: I always recommend investing in arrangements that can be repurposed throughout the day, such as ceremony flowers that can later be moved into the reception space.

For impact, I think the ceremony backdrop and dining tables are the most important areas, as they feature heavily in photos and are where guests spend the most time. Aisle flowers are beautiful, but can be scaled back if budget is a concern.

Lucy: For anyone looking to improve their floral skills at home, where would you recommend starting?

Róisín: Instagram is a great resource for inspiration and learning. There are so many florists sharing beautiful work and helpful videos online.

I’d also really recommend attending a workshop with a local florist. It’s a lovely way to learn hands-on skills and build confidence working with flowers.

Lucy: How is floral design evolving at the moment? Are there specific aesthetics or structural elements that clients are heavily requesting?

Róisín: Current trends are leaning towards colour blocking and grouped floral arrangements with a more refined, intentional feel. Sculptural bridal bouquets are also very much in demand, often with little to no foliage, allowing unique textures and flower shapes to stand out. The overall look tends to feel minimal, modern, and tonal, with carefully considered colour palettes.

Lucy: What’s something that would surprise the average person about the life of a floral designer?

Róisín: I think most people would be surprised by how much work happens behind the scenes. There’s a huge amount of planning, preparation, sourcing, logistics, lifting, traveling, and long days involved alongside the creative side of things. Wedding work in particular can involve months, and sometimes over a year, of preparation before the final installation day arrives.

It’s definitely hard work, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to see everything come together and to be part of such an important day in people’s lives.

DIY Florals

After our intimate Irish wedding, the plan was to have an epic Wedding Celebration in Brooklyn later that month. The decor was originally slotted to be candles only (for budgetary reasons). As she was helping me with neck scarf at her studio, Carlie Hougen floated the idea of DIY florals. Carlie and I had spent many sleepless nights in college making our dreams become reality so it only made sense to reenact this trauma bond.

We decided in the 11th hour to take the plunge because why not add another element of stress and chaos?

Here is how it went:

Roses 🌹

• I LOVED the creative process and the shopping experience. It was so fun to learn something new and spend time with a good friend.

• I’m obsessed with how they came out. Totally unique and I haven’t seen another bride do the same thing.

• Carlie used our hand fasting tie to wrap my bouquet which was such a sweet detail.

• Thrifting/antiquing for the vessels was really fun, and I still use them!

• Since the event was local, I took home all the florals and enjoyed them in our apartment for the many days after. We even dropped off some to family and friends which made a perfect social visit/wedding debrief.

Thorns 🥀

• In retrospect I wish I had hired a few task rabbits to help with the install/strike. It takes longer than you think! We ran behind schedule.

• Picking up all the florals the next day hungover was a troll. Thank god Connor and his dog Romeo came and helped me. The biggest bouquet went to them as a thank you.

• Safety Note: Candles fall under the florist. Since I did all DIY and no real experience, I didn’t get hurricanes for the candles. That was a mistake a professional wouldn’t have made. Someone’s hair and someone’s blazer caught fire. In my defense the hair one was definitely user error, a guest moved the candle to head level shelf. These are the kinds of risks you run when you go rouge.

Carlie generously provided some insight for anyone looking to walk a similar DIY path:

Lucy: You did the florals at you own wedding (absolutely stunning!) and threw your hat in the ring to do mine pro-bono—can you talk a little about what motivates you to do that? Do you have advice for future brides on how to ‘recruit’ DIY floral help?

Carlie: When I decided to do the florals at my wedding, I think it was a bit out of necessity. I was having a hard time finding a florist within my budget and also have to admit, a bit of a control freak about the aesthetic of a room, especially when I am hosting. After speaking with my talented and creative family, we all decided that the florals was something we could handle. My mom immediately started reading up on the floral arrangement style that I loved, called Ikebana and was practicing every weekend making different arrangements so by the time of the wedding we were all able to jump in and make the arrangements. I think what really inspired me to help you with your wedding is I love working with you in a creative space and I also know that like me, you too can be very particular about aesthetic and I wanted it to feel very personal and special to you!

Lucy: How did you approach the ‘Movie Premiere’ brief differently than a traditional wedding? What were the main architectural elements you wanted to hit for that space?

Carlie: I loved how many conversations we had together to really thoroughly think out your vision. We played with ideas of making it really campy but then decided on using a mix of very classic florals along with sculptural desert flowers to play off of the hard lines of the Art Deco inspired bar. But we still managed to keep it a little playful by using delicate butter yellow florals to represent popcorn cascading down.

Lucy: We spent a whole afternoon thrift shopping for vessels (so much fun!). What should someone look for—or avoid—when doing this? Any tips for building a high-end look using budget or second-hand vessels?

Carlie: The best advice I have for when you’re shopping for vessels is to make sure that the floral frog you are using can sit flush on the bottom and doesn’t wobble back and forth, making sure the arrangement is stable and won’t become unbalanced and tip over. I would also avoid using anything that might be sentimental or precious to you or your partner because at the end of the night, something might get misplaced at a wedding - especially if you are required to do your own cleanup at the venue.

When shopping for vessels, I always personally feel that vessels that don’t perfectly match but are all within the same style makes it seem a little more special and thought out. Great way to budget is by looking at thrift stores outside of the city and Goodwill online. Ikea is very budget friendly when it comes to buying Votives and Tea Lights.

Lucy: What is the one thing people underestimate about doing their own wedding florals?

Carlie: Floral transportation and time. If it is possible, I would say the best is to build your floral arrangements on site. If this is not an option, I would really suggest doing a test transportation run so you don’t have any mishaps the day of.

Florals do take a lot of time, I would say it would be best to do them the night before and see if the venue will let you store them in their walk-in fridge so they keep fresh. If you plan on doing them the morning of, make sure to clean all of the stems so they can be ready to be arranged. I noticed cleaning stems always takes longer than expected as well. Also, always make sure to have an extra bucket of flowers in case you need to make any last minute arrangements or if a flower stem breaks.

Lucy: Any ‘pro tips’ for navigating the flower markets or sourcing stems as a hobbyist?

Carlie: I really think the best way to navigate is really just walking around a few times, popping into as many places as possible. After a couple times you will really get to know which places have the best prices and what you are looking for. The Floral District does close early, so I would suggest getting there around 7 or 8am.

Lucy: When you aren't looking at flowers, where do you turn for inspiration? Is anything in particular speaking to your creative spirit lately?

Carlie: I usually am on IMBd, taking screenshots of stills from old Sci-Fi and Horror films from around the 60s and 70s. I am always inspired by the colors and visuals from those films

Lucy: What’s something that would surprise people about the actual labor of a DIY floral day?

Carlie: I’m not sure if this will be surprising to anyone, but there really is a lot of patience and time that goes into making any arrangement. I am constantly moving around the arrangement to make sure there are no visual holes and it is interesting from every perspective.

Lucy: As someone with a brilliantly creative eye (and her own business!), how do you decide which projects are worth putting in the extra hours for?

Carlie: Any project that I find exciting and a little outside of my comfort zone is usually something I enjoy going after. That being said, you do have to make sure that you are honest with yourself and your own abilities and don’t commit to a project you feel like you can’t come through on for your clients

Lucy: Many of the readers are freelancers or have side hustles. Do you have any advice for anyone wearing multiple hats or struggling to incorporate creative work into their repertoire?

Carlie: Don’t take on too many jobs where it makes it impossible for you to do what you want to do with your own work. Always be honest with yourself and make sure that you aren’t taking on more that you can handle.

A year ago I wouldn’t even consider faux florals. I succumbed to popular wisdom that they’re tacky. I’m now happy to say I have since become more enlightened on the genre!

Faux floral get such a bad wrap, when really, there are plenty of times where they make sense.

My latest TikTok obsession Ren Lucas is shifting that perspective.

I didn’t even know what Carolina Pottery was a few weeks ago. Now my shoulders relax when I hear that recognizable harp intro paired with “Hey guys so I’m a floral designer at Carolina Pottery.” When they gather the faux floral and ribbons and give us a sneak peak of the before I get giddy. The in-progress shot is inspiring to us DIY enthusiasts. It reinforces floral arranging is a trust the process the thing. The final reveal always blows me away. As someone who has never been in the market for door wreaths or memorial bouquets, I’m still absolutely devouring these videos. I also love that the price is included, it’s very clear what stems are driving the price and there are often tips on how to stretch the budget.

Okay, now that I’ve successfully opened your mind to faux florals, I have event specific insights. I think a few factors lend themselves to faux florals:

1. Budget maxxing. A typical 150 person event space with florals in a high cost of living area starts at ten grand. Not everyone can afford that and even if they can, it might not be a priority.

2. You can mix faux with real flowers and the illusion will be quite convincing!

3. Elaborate arch installations take time and faux florals can be built off-site. Maybe your venue only has a two hour install window. Say you wanted a chuppah or an arch that is DIY - faux may be your best bet. I find branch stems like cherry blossoms and wisteria are very convincing. Additionally, if you want a large visual impact, a big faux floral sculptural backdrop can’t be beat.

   

4. Faux florals work well in low lights. Table florals for night events with fairy/candle light can be very forgiving.

3. Winter weddings! There are many very compelling faux evergreens and balsams on the market.

   This is how I came to appreciate faux florals. After seeing Court House brides struggle with their delicate bouquets through the metal detector and admin work when we picked up our marriage license, I knew I wanted to go faux. It gave me freedom for out of season stems (I wanted to do tulips in September) and left me carefree and in the moment. I mixed in some real stems from my birthday bouquet to help the illusion. So happy with how it came out and of course, the price.

Friday:

After a day in the office in Midtown (which is not part of the best weekend ever, especially since there was heavy construction on the building) we call it a day *inset millennial slams laptop shut meme of choice here* and head down to the Nine Orchard for an early happy hour. Because we, like Jessel Taank, know the weekend starts on Friday, honey!

I’ve written about it before but Nine Orchard is such a stunning place. A fully restored Beaux-Arts gem with fresh and creative design choices. You can swoon over them in the Swan Room, be temped by the tempietto and bask in the glory of the Blue Room.

The crew and I yapped here for hours. I was tempted to make a 9:20pm showing of The Drama at Regal Essex Crossing but ultimately went home and fell sleep to The X-Files.

Saturday:

I woke up early on this rainy day ready to make progress on some unfinished projects. After my morning matcha, I sat down and wrote a few Thank You Notes for our September wedding. Around 11:30am I put on some makeup and jumped on my first Founding Member’s Zoom call. I didn’t know what to expect, but it was lovely to chat with six other women about our personal and Substack goals. I’ll put mine here for added accountability:

Lucy’s Goals for May:

Personal: Add one item to the living room / Long walks, cooking, analog hobbies instead of screen time / Complete France trip planning

Substack: Do first Live / Add downloadable content / Publishing first interview

I felt energized after this, so I went with my husband to drop off sweaters and pick up my giant winter coat at the dry cleaners in preparation for storage. For over a year now I have been using Box & Co to store my off season clothes (among other things). It’s helped keep my small closet manageable and minimize morning decision fatigue. It mirrors that specific lightness of living out of a suitcase, where every item is intentional and the 'closet noise' is silenced.

The rain was coming down sideways and it was pretty miserable out, so we cut our errands down (the goal was to pick up printed photos for the Thank You Cards) and wound up at the closer, more expensive grocery store (when the tin-foil rang up to $17.99, my jaw was on the floor). It wasn’t the most satisfying errand run but it did the job and we ran home like fussy, wet kittens.

Since the morning was so productive, I put on my most lux PJs1 and turned in for a nap. The rain sounds were glorious and this chronic bad sleeper got a solid 2.5 hours of snooze.

When I rose, it was time to get ready to meet up with friends at Uncle Lou’s. Another schlep in the rain wasn’t on my bucket list but it made the tea and hot and sour soup hit extra hard. It was so nice to catchup with everyone and I am grateful for the round table with a Lazy Susan for maximum sharing and socializing.

We end the night with some live Jazz at Saint Tuesday. Our friend Josh was drumming with Miki Yamanaka and Alex Wintz. He secured us a front row four-top. I forgot how invigorating live music is and for Q3 I want to set some goals around enjoying more of it. I asked the bartender to make me a drink that was almond forward with no coffee or espresso. As someone who doesn’t usually go off menu, it was a thrill and a treat. I couldn’t hear the full description over the good music but I think I heard her say chartreuse was involved, which I love (though it’s recently come to my attention there are some supply issues, so I’m not looking to increase demand by singing it’s praises).

Sunday:

I met a friend at S & P for an early lunch before we headed over to the Jewelry Antique Object Show (JAOS) at the Metropolitan Pavilion.

It was heavenly to consume my favorite foods (latkes, burger, chocolate malt shake) and then try on jewels and watches. I couldn’t have had a better partner in crime for this deliciously indulgent day. Kara Berry of course befriended every dog at the jewelry show - which were out in spades to weigh in on their owner’s material investments.

As a prolific podcaster, Kara gave me some tips and calmed my nerves for the upcoming Live. She also told me not to blow my Substack earnings right away and sit on them for a bit. Which is very sage advice, and well timed as I was falling in love with this 17th Century Ring:

After JAOS I took a series of trains and buses home, which was a real troll as the distance was less than 1.5 miles. The MTA really does phone it in on the weekends, I swear.

Once home, cue full crash out panic mode pre-Live debut. My husband troubleshot my new mic and got my broadcast station set up complete with iPad for my notes. I gave a half hearted attempt to style the bookshelf background a bit by adding some Trader Joe’s ranunculus. I popped a beta blocker, made a Whiskey Ginger and ceremoniously went Live pre-maturely and deaded the link I had distributed to over 1,000 people.

I took some deep breaths and tried again. I reminded myself it was going to be okay.

It was such a relief to see Ryan able to join the “waiting room” of the Live. Now I know the difference between the waiting room and the “Go Live” button 😅. Shortly after Connor was there, too and we were all just gabbing and having a great time. We discussed writing, the creative process, the internet, Substack and some childhood ambitions/writing prompts that have stuck with us.

I’m bias but I think it went pretty well, all things considered! Judge for yourself here.

My victory meal was a turkey sandwich. I went to bed early feeling a mix of emotions - including extreme exhaustion and a high sodium intake.

Bonus! Monday:

In the spirit of Samantha P.’s wisdom, here are some fun things I did on Monday to keep that weekend energy going.

After plugging away at this Substack and then my day job, I had a solo lunch at Sunrise Mart. It feels so luxurious to have a lunch out after packing my work lunch for three months straight. I was transported from midtown to Japan. It felt invigorating to try some new combinations (curry udon with chicken katsu to be exact). It made me think of the novel Convenience Store Woman that I read last summer. Though at the time I wasn’t the biggest fan, themes from that story have stuck with me.

Saturday got me thinking about live music. A big barrier for me is the fees. It just feels so wrong to pay $20-$30 in fees for an emailed ticket. To avoid this I made my way over to the Pier 17 Box Office and bought two tickets to an October show in person. The fee was only $5 a ticket and holding the physcial tickets awakened a beautiful kind of nostalgia in me.

After struggling to get my hands on Famesick, I decided to pop into the Seaport location of McNally Jacksons. Sure enough, it was there right in the front, plenty of copies. Since the store wasn’t crowded I expanded my search over to the beautifully curated magazine section. My aunt has been in a long term care unit for many months now and I try and send cards or flowers every month. In May I want to mix it up. She spent her life creating beautiful tile work, so I picked up an issue of The World of Interiors thinking she’d enjoy that.

Closing out this extended weekend, hubby and I had a sushi dinner with Kara and Troy at Momoya SoHo. There were so many laughs and celeb gossip, my only sushi pic looks like this:

This is not that.

I didn’t take AP English. I have a BFA and that only required two English credits. My friend Jannah and I decided to take both of those with the hottest English teacher on campus. So, there was passion involved but not exactly for the written word.

Most of my professional career has been spent making visual decks and technical drawings. My email communication is decidedly simple because most of my recipients are non native English speakers. Ask my friends and family - my texts have always been hard to decipher (with the exception of the BlackBerry/BBM era RIP) and my most active group chat is sustained entirely through voice memos. I do have an honorary degree from a prestigious prep school in New England, but that is a bizarre side quest I plan to write about at a later date.

In November, Together Journal reached out via our photographer with interview questions about our Brooklyn Wedding Celebration. Yes, I am that girl that never shuts up about her wedding but stick with me here! In that process, I realized I was basically writing the article myself through these answers. I took my time and I really enjoyed it. I realized nothing was stopping me from doing more of that, so that same month I posted my first Substack.

I made a goal: post a minimum of twice a month. Notice this is an action based goal not a result based goal. The first few posts were clunky and long. The links broke and the visuals were lacking. It didn’t matter — the first pancake always burns. Eventually the posts got better and I kept going because I found joy in it. With each post I was learning and exploring, which keep me consistent. My husband says I’m requiring fewer edits now. I’m finally learning the difference between it’s and its at thirty-five.

Now for the best part, I’ve found so much interesting writing on here. I’ve covered my (lack of a) writing career but I’ve always been a big reader.

As a kid I loved Fantasy and Survival Fiction. As a teen I loved Instructional/How-To books. As an adult, I love Murder Mysteries, Memoirs and Self Improvement. Throughout my life I have always devoured magazines and I will gladly start sharing recommendations for any of the above genres if anyone is interested.

When I get a new subscriber, I immediately go and see if they have any posts of their own. I started to realize something: a lot of you haven’t posted in months, if not years! I really want to read what you have to say. So, in a totally self-serving act of kindness, here are some writing tips from a non-writer Substack writer:

Setup & Focus Tips

Getting the environment right for your brain to get to work and stay on task.

1. Use a playlist to keep the energy up. One without lyrics that distract the internal monologue. It’s so cheesy but this Instrumental Classic Rock one is my go to.

2. I buy a 12 rack of seltzer (Polar Lime or Canada Dry Original are my favorites) and a pack of gum on my writing days. There is science behind this but it feels like it magically helps me focus.

3. When this isn’t enough, we bring in the heavy artillery: Diet Coke

4. Lighting a candle helps transport me to another mental state. Here are some of my favorites.

5. Stay in the flow state. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb. Some friends of mine swear by Brick, I don’t personally use it.

6. Sit down from a place of Gratitude. You are not a prisoner or being punished (though sometimes I do feel captive to my self imposed deadlines). Tell yourself “I’m doing this because I want to, not because I have to.” It reframes the whole process.

7. Sometimes I dissociate and pretend I’m on The Yearbook Committee. It’s not dissimilar to when I’m having a hard time falling asleep and I pretend I’m on a sleeper car of a train. There is fun in the cosplay-of-it-all and that ignites a spark.
