It’s gorgeous. For many, it feels like the ultimate goal.

This is my current life. I run my businesses, trade the markets, and coach clients while living full-time out of my 4Runner. I have the mountain views and the freedom.

But I also have the dirty secret nobody wants to talk about when they’re selling you the dream of “business from anywhere.”

It’s this: When you remove all the structure from your life, you realize how much you relied on it to keep you disciplined. (And this applies whether you’re running your business from your house or from the road.)

When you don’t have an office to go to or a boss to report to, the line between “work” and “life” can dissolve. The freedom you craved suddenly becomes a void you have to fill.

I did this myself when I started my business, and I’ve seen it time and again with my clients. What, at first, feels amazing to an early-stage entrepreneur can turn into days of not getting anything done. I’ve watched as people threw out SOPs and schedules when they left the corporate world, only to recreate them when they realize those boundaries help create the scaffolding of freedom.

If you haven’t done the inner work to manage yourself, this can quickly become unbalanced.

I’ve seen entrepreneurs build incredible businesses that give them the financial freedom to go anywhere, only to realize they have no idea how to actually be anywhere. They either unconsciously rebuild the same stressful cage they just escaped, or they lose momentum because they don’t have the discipline to execute without external pressure and accountability.

Running a business from the road isn’t about having the perfect rig or a beautiful view; it’s an inside game. It requires a huge amount of self-trust and the ability to build your own structure. It’s about knowing the difference between taking a Tuesday off because you have the freedom to do so, and taking Tuesday off because you’re avoiding the work.

There have been days when I couldn’t get a solid internet connection, or 30mph winds threatened to blow my tent away. So no, the reality of this lifestyle isn’t always pretty. And ALL entrepreneurs need to find harmony with when to work and when to live.

But the trade-off? You get to own your time. You get to forge your own path.

When I talk about a “freedom business,” people may think I’m talking about having no responsibilities. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead, it’s the ability to choose your responsibilities. So whether you’re building a business from home or on the road, don’t just plan for the money. Envision the person you have to become to sustain it.

I’ve been a writer for as long as I can remember. Personally, keeping journals throughout my life, scribbling lines of poetry in 7th-grade biology when I was supposed to be listening to the lecture. Then I wrote and edited for my college newspaper and, finally, professionally as an editor at a literary magazine and as an author.

That doesn’t mean I like to write. Instead, I enjoy having written. I quote Dorothy Parker often: “I hate writing, I love having written.”

I am just as prone to procrastination as the next person. But when I saw this quote from an AMA with Anthony Bourdain, it’s stuck with me ever since.

“Writing is a privilege and a luxury.”

As I’m not a cook, I had no idea what cleaning squid entailed, although it sounded gross enough to make me want to write instead. (Just as I love having written but hate to write, I love to eat, but I hate to cook.)

To solidify this idea into my brain, I looked up how to clean squid, and this is what Google said:

Step 1: Remove the Head and Guts

Lay the squid flat on a cutting board. Firmly grip the body tube with one hand and the tentacles/head with the other.

Gently but steadily pull the tentacles. The head and the attached innards (guts) should slide right out of the body cavity along with it.

Step 2: Extract the Cartilage (Quill)

Look inside the transparent or white body tube to locate the thin, clear, plastic-like strip running down its length.

Grab the exposed end of this cartilage, gently wiggle it, and pull it straight out. Discard it. Rinse the inside of the tube with cold water to wash away any remaining insides.

Step 3: Prepare the Tentacles

Lay the tentacles flat on your cutting board. Right where the tentacles meet the head, use a knife to slice just below the eyes. Discard the head and eyes. Locate the hard, round “beak” right in the center of the tentacles. Pinch the base of the tentacles firmly and the beak will pop out. Discard it.

Step 4: Peel the Skin and Remove Fins (Optional)

The purple or mottled outer skin is edible, but many cooks peel it off for a more tender bite and a clean, pearly white appearance. Simply use your fingers to peel the skin away from the body tube and the fins. The “fins” (or wings) on the side of the body tube are completely edible. You can either slice them off or just peel the skin off them and leave them attached.

Step 5: Final Wash and Cut

Give the body tube and the tentacles a final, thorough rinse under cold running water. If you are making calamari rings, lay the tube flat and slice it crosswise into rings. If you are stuffing the squid, leave the tube whole.

Count me out at step 1 with the head and the guts. No thanks. You’ll find me writing instead.

Today is my business’s 19th birthday. That feels pretty crazy to say since about 20% of new small businesses fail in their first year, and by the end of five years, nearly 50% have closed. After 10 years, that number rises to roughly 65%.1

I recently came across a photo of myself from around that time, when I had just started my coaching business, was still working full-time in Corporate America, and was years away from meeting my husband. Such a baby! 😂

That girl was full of hope and dreams. She had a burning desire to inspire people and make her mark in the world, but no idea what lay ahead: the financial hardships, the dark nights of the soul, the many moments she’d consider giving up.

She also had no idea about the life waiting for her on the other side.

If I could reach back and whisper something to her, it would be simple:

“Keep going.”

Through the doubt.
Through the uncertainty.
Through the seasons when nothing seems to be working.

Keep going.

Because the freedom and growth you find, the kind you can feel in your body, is more profound than anything you could imagine sitting where you’re sitting right now.

Today, I’m writing this to you from the road as I overland through the western US, running Lucra® from wherever I happen to be. Twenty-eight-year-old me would not have imagined this lifestyle.

Song of the Open Road

As many of you know, I put my things in storage back in March and set out on the open road. My first destination was Arizona to see friends and take care of some administrative tasks. Now I’m back in New Mexico, and next week I’ll be heading north toward Colorado.

I’ll be documenting more here and here as I go, but for now, here are five things I’ve learned so far:

I have too much stuff.
I generally don’t think of myself as having a lot of stuff (I don’t own a couch or a TV) but living out of 89.7 cubic feet (my 2023 4Runner) really makes me prioritize what’s essential. I’ve already had to downsize 2 times since I initially left ABQ and put more stuff in storage. I’ll record a tour of my space once I've organized it again.

I had two lists when I was preparing last month: “Essentials” and “Potentials.” Now that I’m actually on the road, even the Essentials are getting whittled down to the bare minimum.

My nervous system loves being in the woods.
These are my recovery scores based on HRV and resting heart rate. Since I left the city on March 31st, there’s been a significant uptrend.

Liquid soap doesn’t work well when frozen. 🥶

I’m not just talking about the freedom to work from anywhere… I’m living it.
Starlink. ✅ Solar power. ✅ Those (along with this beast) provide a truly mobile workspace.

This is one of the best decisions I’ve made.

My Poor Mother 😂

I grew up in a family where the lunar calendar mattered. We knew everyone’s animal sign, and it was something we talked about, joked about, and quietly used to understand each other.

My mother is an Ox.

Steady, dependable, and hardworking, she’s all about endurance and consistency. She showed up every day, worked hard, and expected others to do the same. Reliability and follow-through were values by which she lived.

Then there were the Horses.

Her mother (my grandmother) was a Horse.
Her eldest sister (my aunt) was a Horse.
And then me.

If you know anything about the dynamic between Ox and Horse energy, you can guess how that played out...

The Ox values structure, predictability, and a clear plan, while the Horse is driven by freedom, curiosity, and possibility.

I can only imagine her dismay when, after spending her whole life dealing with the two horses in her family, I, her firstborn, was also born in a Horse year. Ha!

I moved quickly, thought quickly, and followed my instincts instead of instructions. From the Ox perspective, it probably felt chaotic and unnecessary.

Even if you weren’t born in a horse year, Fire Horse will be the vibe for the duration of 2026. So it’s interesting to consider both the feminine and masculine qualities of Horse energy: On the feminine side, it embodies intuition, emotional intelligence, and creative flow. On the masculine side, it expresses courage, action, and forward momentum. When these two aspects are balanced, the Fire Horse doesn’t burn everything down recklessly. Instead, it activates growth, movement, and aligned expansion.

This is NOT a year for playing small, waiting for permission, or overthinking every step. It’s a year that asks where you need more freedom, where you are being called to take action, and what part of you is ready to move instead of staying stuck.

Fire Horse years tend to favor creators, builders, and entrepreneurs who trust momentum over perfection. They’re willing to learn by doing, refine as they go, and allow clarity to emerge through action rather than waiting for certainty to arrive first.

I just realized that this is my first post of 2026 because, to put it simply, this year did not start as I’d imagined…

Just a week into January, I found out that my dear friend, Sheila, had died. 😔 It was a total shock to our inner circle.

This past weekend was her Celebration of Life, and while it was good to be back in Arizona with friends and family, unfortunately, it was under such sad circumstances.

I’ve talked about the benefits of building a freedom-focused business many times, but Sheila (in life and now in death) reminds me to kick it up a notch. So, instead of staying in Albuquerque for another year, where it’s “fine” but not lighting up my soul, I’m canceling my lease and heading out on the open road to see what’s next on my HeartPath.

We live on a planet in constant motion. Orbiting and evolving, whether we pause to notice it or not. Even in the depths of winter, nothing is completely still. Roots are working underground; energy is conserved.

As I’ve mentioned, business has seasons, too.

There are times for expansion, visibility, and bold action. And some times are quieter and slower, where the most important work is happening below the surface.

We often mistake these seasons for stagnation, but that’s often just a disconnect from the larger rhythm of which we are a part.

The winter solstice reminds us to stop and listen, to step back, and to allow old versions, strategies, and expectations to fall away so something more aligned can take form.

This is about both ending and beginning.

What no longer needs to be present in your next business cycle?
What wants to be carried forward, even if you can’t yet see its fruition?

After today, light returns slowly and incrementally. Not all at once. And that’s how meaningful growth usually works:

• One decision.

• One conversation.

• One next step.

As we move into the holiday season, my hope for you is this:
Trust the season you’re in.
Acknowledge the cycles of your work and life.

Look, I don’t need to tell you that the world has changed. You can’t rely on regular employment for stability anymore. Companies restructure. They downsize. They automate. They “reorganize” you right out the door. 🚪

Before I became an entrepreneur, I worked for a Fortune 100 company. In the brief seven years I was there, I went through TWO restructurings. Not because I wasn’t a rock star at my job, but because corporations are designed to protect their bottom line, not our livelihood.

And if you’ve been paying attention to the job market, you know it’s not looking so hot...

According to a recent report, U.S. employers have already announced more than 1 million job cuts in 2025. In October alone, companies announced 153,074 layoffs, making it the worst October for job cuts since 2003.1 That’s not fear speaking. That’s data.

So here’s the reality:
If you want long-term security, you have to create it yourself.

And no, that doesn’t mean quitting your job tomorrow. If you have a stable job, great! Use it as a launchpad. Use it to fund the business you actually want to build. Use it to move toward something that aligns with your purpose, not just something that pays the bills.

If you ADORE your job, that’s even better, but it’s not the worst idea to at least consider a side hustle. You know… Just in case. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That somehow, if you wait long enough, plan hard enough, or think your way through every scenario, the perfect path will reveal itself.

In quantum mechanics, subatomic particles don’t have a definite position until they’re observed in motion. ⚛ Until then, they exist in a state of probability, a wave of potential outcomes.
