Advanced Woodcarving: Traps & Snares

Are you ready to bring your knife carving skills to the practical application level for survival and backcountry camping?Join us for trap and snare making as well as other advanced carving skills that will help you become more proficient with your knife during wilderness outings. Expect to walk away with a lot of new skills in how to most effectively utilize your camp and bush knife.

**Knives will be for sale at this class for $20 or you can bring your own. However YOU need to ensure it’s newly sharpened and ready to carve. We recommend a Mora Fixed Blade Companion Knife. With almost endless variations, sizes, and shapes that can be created using only thread and a bundle of needles, each camper is sure to leave with a beautiful and functional hand-stitched basket.

This is a lengthy process. Your basket will look more like a coaster at first, but you’ll have all the skills needed to weave your own custom made baskets.

We’ll meet at Buzz Mill Coffee, 1505 Town Creek Drive, at 8:30am and then head down to the lake. Afterward we’ll head back to Buzz Mill and Santo Patio for a snack and a drink on us!

We’ll have 2-person canoes available for use to get on the water and grab all the trash that can’t be reached from the shore. This is the work that most needs to be done, and it can be fun doing it. Our canoe spots will be filled first-come first-serve, so show up early!

This Thursday we’re back with our Shelter Building survival workshop led by Camp Master Chris Hyde. Trade your tent for ingenuity and build your own backcountry bedroom! This interactive workshop is all about fun, creativity, and learning one of the most fundamental survival skills. You’ll learn to “read” the landscape for ideal locations and materials before teaming up to design and build a sturdy, weather-resistant shelter.

Shelter Building Workshop

Unlock the ancient science of staying dry and warm. Our shelter building workshop is a fascinating blend of survival skill and practical physics. We’ll explore the why behind the how, discussing concepts like insulation, wind deflection, and rainwater runoff. Troop members will get a chance to square off against each other to see who can build the best water-tight shelter with all the tips and tricks they’ve picked up during this workshop. This isn’t just about piling up branches, it’s about understanding your environment and working with it to create a life-saving microclimate. You’ll walk away with a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the ingenious skills to thrive in it.

Learn all the basic knots and much more from Wilderness First Responder Chris Hyde! This foundational workshop is your gateway to the essential language of practical knots. We will move beyond simple overhand knots to master a core set of reliable hitches, loops, and bends critical for survival and outdoor pursuits. Leave with the muscle memory and confidence to securely fasten gear, construct shelters, and tackle a multitude of tasks where a well-chosen knot is the difference between success and failure.
