It’s been a minute. Okay, more like a few weeks of minutes. I know. Like most writers, I hit a wall. That last episode took everything out of me (it was so worth it), and I needed some time to exhale and really decide how I wanted to come back. That story is a whole article on its own, and you’ll get it. Episode 10 is almost locked, and what comes after it is bigger than one episode. More on that when I’m back home.

Right now, I’m in Las Vegas.

I lived here before moving to Seattle, WA. The Strip has changed, whole areas that weren’t here four years ago, and it’s monsoon season, so I’ve spent the last couple of days enjoying the storms. But some things about this city don’t change.

Like my book club sistahs.

If you heard Why I Wrote Pull Me Under, or Who Are You Riding For, I’ve given a little backstory into our relationship. We’ve spent years at someone’s home or at a restaurant discussing everybody else’s books and if it was a well written story.

They have no idea I wrote one.

Today I’m having brunch with them to catch up, because it’s been yearsss. And I’m telling them. And because I know these women terribly well, they won’t just scream. They’ll be planning my first book signing before the mimosas are gone. They can’t help themselves. That’s who they are, and it’s half the reason the book exists.

That’s the vision behind the Pull Me Under High-Rise.

I created it for the readers, listeners, and curious minds who want to experience the Pull Me Under universe in a deeper, more immersive way. Some of you have already expressed interest in becoming beta residents, and watching your excitement has reminded me that this story has always been bigger than the pages.

The cinematic trailer below is my first attempt at bringing that vision to life.

As an independent creator, I’m learning new tools, experimenting with new technology, and discovering new ways to tell stories. Every step brings the world in my imagination a little closer to the one I can share with you.

My long-term vision has never changed.

I want Pull Me Under to become a television adaptation.

This trailer is part of that journey. It’s a way of exploring the visual language of the series, introducing the atmosphere of the High-Rise, and beginning to show what this universe can become.

There’s a moment in every romance novel where the male lead says the thing. You know the one — the line where he doesn’t deflect, disappear, or make her chase clarity. He just says it. And readers lose it. We call him a book boyfriend, and we mean it as the highest compliment.

So why, when a real man says the same thing, do we sometimes flinch?

That’s the question sitting underneath “The Breeze,” the latest single from Texas-based singer-songwriter Juhmal.

“Don’t hold back your words, say exactly what you mean.”

On the surface, “The Breeze” is a slow-burning soul record about giving someone the benefit of the doubt. But peel it back, and it’s really about the silent treatment — and Juhmal’s refusal to accept it as the default. The request at the center of the song is almost embarrassingly simple: just talk to me. I can take it.

It’s the kind of emotional directness that, on a page, would have readers highlighting the page.

The “Destiny Swap”

Juhmal calls it a destiny swap — his term for the quiet, unspoken renegotiation happening in modern relationships, where traditional roles have shifted but nobody actually announced the new rules.

We’re handed a blueprint for what healthy, communicative love looks like through music and fiction — but when someone tries to live it out loud, it can read as too good to be true.

The result, he argues, is a kind of cultural whiplash. We say we want emotionally fluent partners. We celebrate them in fiction. And then, sometimes, we second-guess them the moment they show up in real life.

Where Storytelling Meets Real Life

This is the tension this ongoing series is built to sit inside. The idea is to use conversations like this one — between artists, writers, and and the people living these questions out in real life — to ask how the emotional fluency we crave in fiction hits (or doesn’t) onto the relationships we’re actually building.

Vulnerability. Consistency. The willingness to stay in the hard conversation instead of walking out of it. These are the traits that make a great love interest. They’re also, increasingly, the traits we’re suspicious of when we meet them in person.

"The Breeze" doesn't pretend to have it all figured out. But it makes a simple ask — talk to me, don't shut down — and that ask alone is worth sitting with.
