Its MI300X chip has been adopted by Microsoft Azure, Meta, and Oracle as a cost-competitive alternative for inference workloads &#8212; where the AI is answering queries rather than training new models. AMD&#8217;s HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) content per chip is comparable to Nvidia&#8217;s, making it a meaningful additional customer for SK Hynix. The investment case for AMD is a call option on Nvidia&#8217;s supply constraints: when hyperscalers cannot get enough H100s or B200s, they turn to AMD. As the market grows from millions to tens of millions of chips annually, even a 12% share becomes a very large number. AMD is not a Nvidia replacement &#8212; but it doesn&#8217;t need to be.</p><p>Part Two: The Real Bottleneck &#8212; Ultra-Fast Memory (HBM)</p><p>Inside each AI chip sits a special type of ultra-fast memory called HBM (High Bandwidth Memory). Think of it as the chip&#8217;s short-term workspace &#8212; the faster and bigger it is, the quicker the AI can think. Each Nvidia H100 has 80 gigabytes of HBM and can read from it at 3.35 terabytes per second &#8212; equivalent to reading 700 USB drives simultaneously.</p><p>This memory is the scarcest and most expensive component in the entire AI supply chain. Only three companies in the world can make it.</p><p>Because SK Hynix makes the majority of the memory that every major AI chip needs &#8212; and is the reported sole qualified supplier for HBM4 on Nvidia&#8217;s R100 at the moment as Samsung&#8217;s HBM4 is still ramping up&#8212; its production schedule does not merely influence the AI industry&#8217;s growth rate. It determines it.</p><p>SK Hynix in 2025 &#8212; the numbers that show the scale: Total revenue of approximately $68 billion. Of that, roughly 42% &#8212; some $28.6 billion &#8212; came from HBM. That is a business that barely existed three years ago.</p><p>The Three Forces Compounding at Once</p><p>1. Volume &#8212; Nvidia chip shipments jump from 1.3 million in 2025 to approximately 8 million in 2026: a 6&#215; increase in a single year.</p><p>2. Stacks per chip &#8212; HBM3 to HBM4 adds 2 more stacks per chip (6&#8594;8): a 33% uplift in memory content per GPU, independent of volume.</p><p>3. Price per stack &#8212; HBM4 costs $560 per stack versus $360 for HBM3: a 56% increase in revenue per stack.</p><p>These three forces do not add &#8212; they multiply. A chip shipped in 2027 carries 2.5&#215; the HBM revenue of a chip shipped in 2025. And from 2027 onward, SK Hynix is reported to capture ~100% of that value on every R100 &#8212; not 53% (until Samsung gets its production ready for HBM4, they are still in qualification stage). SK Hynix&#8217;s addressable revenue from Nvidia alone grows from roughly $1.5 billion in 2025 to $49.3 billion by 2027 &#8212; and potentially $98.6 billion by 2030. That is not a forecast built on optimism &#8212; it is arithmetic applied to announced production plans. Nvidia has publicly stated visibility into $500 billion in demand for Blackwell and Rubin systems through 2026, and forecasts the annual AI infrastructure opportunity reaching $3&#8211;4 trillion by 2030. With approximately 90% AI GPU market share maintained through the end of the decade, every one of those chips will need HBM. And from 2027, SK Hynix is reported to supply all of it &#8212; for Nvidia (until Samsung&#8217;s production capabilities ramp up).</p><p>Why the Bottleneck Tightens, Not Eases, With the Next Generation</p><p>A new AI data center takes 18&#8211;24 months to build. An AI chip takes 12&#8211;18 months to manufacture. And the HBM memory inside that chip requires a production facility that takes 3&#8211;5 years and $10&#8211;20 billion to build from scratch. Today&#8217;s supply of HBM is already partially spoken for by data centers that haven&#8217;t even broken ground yet. Companies are booking capacity years in advance &#8212; in the same way airlines book airport slots. The bottleneck does not ease with the next generation &#8212; it tightens.</p><p>Part Three: The Agentic Era &#8212; Why Demand Is About to Multiply</p><p>The AI most people use today &#8212; ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot &#8212; is a reactive tool. You ask, it answers, the conversation ends. Each interaction is largely self-contained. That is about to change fundamentally.</p><p>Agentic AI doesn&#8217;t just respond &#8212; it reasons, plans, and acts autonomously over extended periods. An agentic system given a goal &#8212; &#8220;research these ten companies and produce an investment memo&#8221; &#8212; will break the task into subtasks, run multiple parallel threads of reasoning, call external tools, check its own work, and iterate until complete. It behaves less like a search engine and more like an employee.</p><p>Jensen Huang called this the defining shift of the current moment. At Dell Technologies World in May 2026, he was direct: &#8220;Agentic AI is the next wave of useful AI. These agents reason, they plan, they take actions. And they require a fundamentally different infrastructure stack &#8212; more memory, more compute, more interconnect.&#8221; Michael Dell reinforced the point: &#8220;Every enterprise we talk to is moving from experimentation to deployment. The question is no longer whether to build agentic infrastructure &#8212; it&#8217;s how fast.&#8221;</p><p>Why Agentic AI Is a Multiplier on Infrastructure Demand</p><p>The infrastructure implications are not linear &#8212; they are multiplicative. Here&#8217;s why:</p><p>&#8226; Far more compute per task. A reactive query uses one model call. An agentic task might involve hundreds of sequential and parallel model calls before delivering a result. Each call requires full GPU and HBM resources.</p><p>&#8226; Persistent memory requirements. Agents must maintain context across long sessions &#8212; sometimes hours or days. This demands dramatically more HBM capacity per active session than a single-shot query.</p><p>&#8226; Always-on deployment. Reactive AI is triggered by a user. Agentic AI runs continuously in the background &#8212; monitoring, scheduling, executing. A company running 1,000 AI agents at once is consuming GPU cycles around the clock, not just when a human types a question.</p><p>&#8226; Parallelism at scale. Enterprises will run fleets of agents simultaneously &#8212; one for each customer, employee, process, or data stream. Jensen Huang estimates that a single enterprise could deploy millions of AI agents within this decade.</p><p>Huang put a number on it at Dell World: &#8220;The infrastructure required for the agentic era is 10 to 100 times what we built for the generative AI era.&#8221; That is not hyperbole &#8212; it is the logical output of the arithmetic above.</p><p>What This Means for HBM</p><p>Every additional layer of agentic complexity is a direct demand multiplier for HBM. More parallel agents means more chips running simultaneously. Longer context windows mean more memory per chip. More persistent sessions mean chips that are never idle. The transition from reactive to agentic AI is, from a hardware perspective, the equivalent of</p><p>every car on the road switching from occasional trips to running at full throttle all day. The engine &#8212; and the fuel &#8212; must scale accordingly.</p><p>This is the demand foundation that makes the HBM supply bottleneck so consequential. It is not a question of whether demand will grow. The only question is whether supply can keep pace. Given that a new HBM fabrication facility takes 3&#8211;5 years and $10&#8211;20 billion to build, the answer &#8212; for the next several years at least &#8212; is no.</p><p>Part Four: The Scale of the Build-Out</p><p>Jensen Huang, Nvidia&#8217;s CEO, put it plainly at Dell Technologies World in May 2026: &#8220;We are at an inflection point. Agentic AI doesn&#8217;t just respond &#8212; it reasons, plans, and executes. That changes everything about the infrastructure required.&#8221; The numbers confirm it.</p><p>The global AI infrastructure boom is the largest coordinated technology build-out in human history &#8212; bigger than the railways of the 1800s, bigger than the mobile phone network of the 1990s.</p><p>The World&#8217;s Data Centers Are About to Triple in Size</p><p>Today there are 11,426 active data centers across 179 countries. Demand for data center capacity is projected to nearly triple by 2030 (McKinsey). The industry is on track to add 97 gigawatts of new capacity between 2025 and 2030 &#8212; equivalent to roughly 90 nuclear reactors, or the entire electricity output of the United Kingdom. In the first half of 2025 alone, North American capacity hit a record 8,155 megawatts &#8212; up 43% in a single year &#8212; and 75% of that capacity was already leased before construction finished.</p><p>Nearly $7 Trillion Will Be Spent</p><p>Over the next five years, companies worldwide are expected to spend nearly $7 trillion building and upgrading data centers (McKinsey), with more than $5 trillion driven by AI workloads. chokepoints: Nvidia makes the chips, and SK Hynix makes the memory without which those chips are expensive paperweights.</p><p>That is not a metaphor. An Nvidia GPU without HBM literally cannot run. It has no fallback, no alternative, no workaround. Every single one of the ~8 million AI chips shipping in 2026, and the ~11 million shipping in 2027, requires HBM memory that only SK Hynix is currently qualified to supply at the highest tier. No other company on earth is in that position &#8212; sole supplier of a mission-critical component to a customer with $500 billion in confirmed demand and 90% market share.</p><p>The agentic era makes this stranglehold tighter, not looser. When AI moves from answering questions to running autonomous agents &#8212; consuming 10&#215; to 100&#215; more compute and memory per user action &#8212; the companies that own the bottlenecks don&#8217;t just benefit from the growth. They gate it. Nothing gets built, shipped, or deployed without their output.</p><p>Here is what that means in actionable terms:</p><p>SK Hynix is the single highest-conviction play in AI hardware. HBM revenue grew from near-zero to $28.6 billion in two years. By 2027, the total HBM market reaches ~$49 billion, of which SK Hynix captures an estimated ~$35 billion at 70&#8211;75% share &#8212; and the agentic era&#8217;s insatiable memory demand (more stacks per chip, more chips per data center, more data centers worldwide) provides a structural growth runway through at least 2030. Samsung will eventually re-enter, but SK Hynix&#8217;s 2&#8211;3 year head start in HBM4 manufacturing and its locked-in position on Nvidia&#8217;s R100 platform create a window of dominance that is, for practical purposes, unassailable in the near term. If you own one stock in the AI supply chain, this is the one with the most asymmetric upside relative to how well it is understood by the broader market.</p><p>Nvidia is the obvious winner and priced accordingly. The investment case is real &#8212; $300+ billion in projected 2026 revenue, expanding into CPUs and networking, with the agentic era growing its total addressable market from GPUs alone to the entire compute stack. But Nvidia is well-covered, well-owned, and trading at a valuation that already prices in dominance. The alpha opportunity is smaller.</p><p>AMD is also not to be missed. The agentic era&#8217;s CPU-heavy workloads play directly to AMD&#8217;s EPYC strength, and its MI325X/MI455X GPUs offer a price-performance alternative for inference. If the CPU-to-GPU ratio shifts from 8:1 toward 2:1, AMD&#8217;s data center revenue could double from CPU demand alone &#8212; a thesis the market has not fully priced.</p><p>Arista and Broadcom are the networking picks. As data center spend on networking grows from ~10% toward 15&#8211;20% of total capex &#8212; driven by agent sessions that span dozens of nodes &#8212; both companies see a structural demand increase that outlasts any single chip cycle.</p><p>The bottom line: AI is not a trend. It is a physical infrastructure buildout on the scale of electrification or the railroad &#8212; except it is happening in a decade, not a century. The companies that manufacture the components at the narrowest points of the supply chain are not just good investments.
