For twenty-seven years, Walter worked in an office.

At first he was ambitious, but despite his best efforts he didn’t fit the corporate camouflage.

He focused on the work. Processed forms, answered emails, and attended meetings. Meetings. Sometimes he explained to people why the answer was no.

The job paid the bills. He was grateful for that, but it was about the best thing he could say about it. For years he imagined something better would come along.

It didn’t.

He sometimes wondered what he’d done with his life. Other people seemed to have stories. They’d travelled, started businesses, painted pictures, raised families, done things that mattered.

Walter had processed forms.

Then, at fifty-four, he went through a restructure. After grinding and futile consultation, he found himself redundant.

He left the office with a cardboard box containing a stapler, three pens and a mug nobody wanted. Certificates from long forgotten courses. Photos of Christmas parties with people whose names he’d already lost. A letter confirming his years of service.

He did his part, and within a month the team had the workshop reopened.

Children came on Saturdays to make birdhouses. Retired men repaired lawnmowers. Someone taught pottery. Someone else taught bicycle maintenance. An older woman taught clothing repairs.

Walter fixed the broken vice, then changed a fuse so the lighting worked.

Then back on to the accounts.

He made lists, labelled drawers.

He found that some people had spent their lives hearing they couldn’t use their hands. These same people were often good at making things when someone gave them a chance.

One afternoon a twelve-year-old girl stood beside him holding a crooked wooden box.

“Is this any good?”

Walter looked at it with a strategic eye.

“It’s a very good beginning.”

She grinned.

Walking home that evening, he thought about the twenty-seven years in the office. The meetings that merged from one to another. The forms. The complaints. The endless small problems disguised as training.

What made me write this?

In the bleak days of 2022 we were living in exile in Waikanae while our “12 weeks took 12 months” house refurb was underway.

Things were bleak for us - the weather was vile, the budget was blowing out, we were working, caring for our lad, and I was completing postgraduate studies with Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland.

We found a little library down near the sea and it was one of the bright points of our time there.

I wanted to capture some of that love and generosity in the story.

Where did the idea come from?

Tough question and easy question at the same time. My friend built a little art gallery outside his house in Kauai, Hawaii. People can get little art works there - so generous - but what a fun idea.

What did I discover researching it?

I didn’t realise quite how many little libraries there are - here’s a quick Pinterest glimpse. There’s the Little Free Library organisation, and they have building plans.

I discovered there are “little library” book boxes in many of the bus stops around here in Wellington, New Zealand. This is a town with readers willing to share.

The guy said it in an interview because it sounded wise. The other guests nodded as though this were the sage wisdom of the age.

Bǎo now Brandon knew better.

Bamboo was grass. Some varieties grew fast. His burnout had grown faster.

There had been the recording studios, of course.

The celebrity status. The crazy-rich years. Los Angeles. New York. London. Paris. Rome.

Fashionable people whose names appeared in magazines. Fine dining where the plates were works of art and the portions were jokes. Gala openings. After-parties. Drugs. Gossip.

Cameras flashed. People shouted his name as though knowing a song entitled them to a piece of him.

He’d smiled. He’d posed. He’d given them what they wanted.

All he wanted was a bowl of rice with a side of love.

The trouble with living fast was that everything began to feel temporary.

A song climbed the charts and disappeared. A face appeared on a billboard one day and gone the next. A restaurant everyone wanted to visit became somewhere nobody remembered. Friends arrived and vanished with the seasons.

His son didn’t.

His son didn’t care about the charts. He didn’t know which restaurant had three Michelin stars.

He didn’t care who was in what photos with whom in London.

He wanted his father to sit beside him.

He wanted to show him something he’d built.

He wanted to ask questions that couldn’t be answered between soundchecks.

So Bǎo came home as Brandon.

He had enough money to keep the family sober and fed.

That was enough, more than enough.

There would be recording opportunities, tours. Another album, if he wanted one.

The world wasn’t going anywhere.

But his son was growing.

People talked about children as though they were bamboo.

Give them time. Let them grow underground. Then one day, all of a sudden they’ll become something magnificent.

Brandon knew that wasn’t how it worked.

You don’t grow a child in secret.

You grow him by being there.

Breakfast.

Homework.

Bad jokes.

Broken toys.

Saturday mornings.

A hand held crossing the road.

On the final morning, a little boy stood on tiptoes at the counter.

“I used to take one of those to school every Friday.”

The boy looked at the loaf, then at the old man.

“Were they nice?”

Janice tried to work out the mathematics of it.

How long does it take to pump fifty litres?

Eight minutes?

Ten?

Was that enough time to empty one life and begin another?

She decided it wasn’t worth calculating.

Instead, she accepted an invitation from her friend Rae.

There were raspberry lamingtons from the bakery. The cheerful girls behind the counter insisted she take two.

“They’re fresh.”

“They’re dangerous,” Janice laughed.

“They’re medicinal,” Rae corrected.

By the second cup of tea, the emotional weather had begun to clear.

On the drive home she noticed a stack of free wooden pallets outside the hardware shop.

They looked as though they needed rescuing.

She loaded two into the back of the car.

Her original plan was simple.

Destroy something.

Armed with a new pry bar, she marched into the garage determined to reduce the pallets to kindling.

Instead, habit intervened.

The first nail slid out without much of a fight.

Then another. She brushed off the dust and coaxed the spiral nails free.

Soon she was stacking timber according to length.

The anger faded somewhere between the third plank and the fourth.

She considered making a birdhouse.

Then a doll’s house.

A week later, standing in the office surrounded by Roger’s books, another idea arrived.

These books deserved readers.

The neighbourhood deserved somewhere to find them.

She began sketching plans on houses in real estate brochures.

She drew vampire teeth on a local politician’s photo when she read about the library budget.

Using Roger’s favourite square, tape measure, and clamps was so satisfying.

Andy from the hardware shop showed her how to use the sacred table saw.

Ear-muffs. Goggles.

Roger’s treasured tools helped build something he’d never imagined.

She oiled the wood, added a green roof, and bolted the library on a post by the bus stop.

The first book disappeared before lunch.

Bamboo, string, paper, tape and an old biscuit tin with rulers, pencils and sharpeners. Some that had outlived several generations of schoolbags.

The younger ones thought they were learning to build kites.

Mr Harris knew better.

Without ever calling it mathematics, he taught them why both sides had to match. Fractions became useful when measuring string. Angles stopped being mysterious once a crooked frame refused to soar.

Physics arrived disguised as curiosity.

“Why won’t this one lift?”

“Because you’ve made it too heavy.”

“How do you know?”

“Let’s find out.”

They discovered that every material had strengths and weaknesses. That the light papers were sometimes the strongest. Knots mattered almost as much as having patience.

On windy mornings, they learned to judge the breeze by the leaves before they felt it on their faces. They learned the names of clouds and which ones promised gentle flying. Some suggested it was wiser to stay on the ground.

By afternoon, the sun had shifted enough to turn red kites crimson. White paper shone almost golden.

The children began to take notice.

When the first finished kite was ready, one boy took off across the field at full speed. The kite dragged and tumbled behind.

Mr Harris smiled.

“You don’t have to run.”

The boy looked puzzled.

“You have to teach it what to do.”

He lifted the kite until the wind found it. A gentle tug demanded a little more line.

The kite strained, then climbed as though it remembered what to do.

The children stared, following the string up until it vanished. The kite looked like it was floating.

“That’s it,” Mr Harris said. “Hold on too tight and your kites never learn what they can do. Give ‘em enough space and they might surprise you.”

By the end of summer, every second child in town could build a kite.

Most of them had also learned a little maths and a little physics. A kite in the sun and wind.

BIXBY HAD TRAVELLED a very long way to find that Aotearoa New Zealand didn’t have any trees quite like home. It did have trees. But different. And the ferns were the size of trees.

He spent his first week matching fence posts instead.

That was where Ngāra found him.

She was a Wellington green gecko. She dressed in moss-green velvet that seemed woven from the forest itself. Tiny silver scales caught the afternoon sun like jewellery. Her jazzy yellow feet looked as though she’d stepped through fresh kōwhai pollen.

Bixby turned a spectacular shade of coral.

“Kia ora. Er, you’ve changed colour,” she observed.

“I do that.”

“I thought it was because of me.”

She blinked.

“It might be a little because of you.”

She smiled. Cute. She liked shy.

Ngāra had heard stories about chameleons.

“They say,” she said, in measured tones, “that you can do extraordinary things with your tongue.”

Bixby turned a darker rouge and disappeared behind the post.

“We catch flies,” his voice muffled behind the post.

“I’m sorry, you what?”

“You know, bugs. I can catch flies. With my tongue.”

“Oh.”

“I’ve heard stories about geckos too.”

“Such as?”

“That Wellington geckos can read the weather by the taste of the wind.”

“We can.”

“You can?”

“Of course.”

He stared.

“I thought it was a story.”

“So did I. About your tongue. I mean”

For several moments neither of them knew quite where to look.

Then Ngāra laughed first.

It was the sort of laugh that sounded like a bark. It made misunderstandings feel less embarrassing and more like unopened parcels.

Over the following weeks she taught him that every breeze carried news. You needed to be patient enough to listen with your skin.

He showed her that changing colour wasn’t pretending to be someone else. It was another way of telling the truth about how you felt.

By late summer they had become rather well known among the insects.

Ngāra could taste where the swarms would drift before sunset. When the mayflies would leap from the water in their mad dance of love.

Bixby could catch them before they noticed.

Neither could have managed quite as well alone.

The tūī assumed they had discovered some ancient reptilian secret.

They hadn’t.

They had stopped believing the stories they had heard about one another. They took a breath long enough to ask a question.

Curiosity travels better than assumptions.

Every Tuesday I visit Alf at the rest home.

Sometimes I massage his shoulders. Sometimes we sit with the newspaper between us.

He used to be military fit and strong. That’s stood him in good stead.

At ninety-one, he says conversation is exercise enough.

He doesn’t read a single headline. He unfolds the paper, finds the television guide and peels it free. It’s like watching a fishmonger pull the bones out of a fish.

“That’s for her at Number Twenty-Two.”

Mrs Dalton, six doors down, is waiting after lunch. She circles the week’s programmes in blue pen.

“Your girlfriend?” I ask.

He snorts.

“I’m too old for that.” Then he lowers his voice. “Besides, the walls have ears and the corridors have eyes.”

He’s only half joking. The corridors do have cameras. The walls are thin.

With the television guide extracted, the filleted newspaper goes into the recycling.

“You don’t read it?”

Alf curls up his nose and waves a dismissive hand.

“I’m ninety-one. I know how this story plays out. I lived it back in ‘68.”

It is hard to argue with someone who’s seen history become memory more than once.

Walking back through the corridor, every door reveals the same quiz show. The same contestants. The same questions. The same laughter arriving a fraction of a second apart from every room.

They’ve all eaten the same lunch. They’ll all have enjoyed the same dessert. Every second one refuses dessert, insisting they’re “watching their weight.” Soon they’ll all watch the same evening news.

Routine becomes its own kind of weather. If you live long enough it becomes climate.

Mrs Dalton waves as she studies the television guide. Already planning Thursday night’s movie. Forgotten before it’s circled.

Alf knows this.

“She’s nice.”

“She is.”

“Always says thank you.”

We sit for a while.

Outside, autumn has arrived without asking anyone’s permission. Someone has planted pansies and polyanthus beneath the windows. A pair of sparrows argue over a crust on the path.

“You know,” I say, “I still think you could do better.”

He smiles, the kind that belongs to men who know more than they let on.

“Maybe.”

He’ll be ninety-two next month.

She thought about who wouldn’t be there.

Her grandfather, who could fillet a fish faster than anyone she’d known.

Her auntie, who sang harmony without ever looking for it.

Her cousin, gone far too young, who always arrived last and left everyone laughing.

At Matariki, they always made room.

Not just at the table.

In the conversation.

In the silence.

In the remembering.

Joel stirred.

“Nearly there?”

“Another half hour.”

He looked at the stars overhead.

“I’ve never seen them like this.”

“You city boys. They’ve been here all along,” she said. “You just can’t see them in town.”

They reached the old house while the world was still midnight blue.

Cars already lined the roadside.

The porch light glowed.

Someone spotted them before the engine stopped.

“Hana’s here!”

The front door opened.

Voices spilled into the cold morning.

Someone hugged her before she’d even closed the car door.

Someone else lifted the chilly bin from the back seat.

Joel stood awkwardly for a moment, unsure where to put his hands.

Her mother crossed the driveway.

“Welcome,” she said.

Nothing more.

Nothing needed.

Later, wrapped in coats and steaming mugs warming their hands, the family stood together facing the eastern sky.

The stars faded one by one as the first light arrived.

Names were spoken quietly.

Stories followed.

Some people were remembered with tears.

Others with laughter.

Hana reached for Joel’s hand.

He squeezed it gently.

“The dahlias have beaten the snails.”

She never asked about the house.

Only the garden.

“Three buds.”

She would close her eyes and nod, as though she’d walked the paths herself.

By late November the garden was impossible to ignore.

People slowed as they passed.

Children stopped to smell the roses.

The restaurant overlooked the city.

By day, people came for business lunches. By night, anniversaries, promotions, proposals. White linen. Heavy cutlery. Glasses polished until they almost disappeared.

By ten o’clock the dining room had thinned.

The last desserts were leaving the pass.

I was counting bookings for the next evening when a couple stepped through the front door.

Hesitant, looking around. They looked cold more than anything.

The sort of tired that settles into your shoulders.

“Sorry,” the man said. “I know it’s late. We were wondering...”

He stopped before the difficult part.

I smiled.

“What can I do for you?”

He looked at the woman beside him before whispering the amount of money they had between them. It wouldn’t have covered one main course.

I asked them to wait in the bar.

Fresh orange juice arrived in crystal glasses.

They looked nervous holding them.

In the kitchen the chef didn’t even let me finish.

“No.”

“They’re hungry.”

“No.”

“We’ve had a quiet night.”

“No.”

“We’re throwing half this food away.”

“They don’t belong here.”

I leaned against the stainless-steel bench.

“You’ve spent thirty years becoming a brilliant chef.”

He kept chopping parsley, looking at me from under his eyebrows.

“Come on, show me.”

He stopped.

Looked at me.

Grunted.

Chefs have entire conversations with a grunt.

Twenty minutes later two plates arrived that weren’t on the menu.

Braised lamb.

Potatoes crisp enough to sing.

Spring vegetables glazed with butter.

Food that looked like someone believed in tomorrow.

I seated them beside the window, the best table in the restaurant.

The city lights spread beneath them like another course.

I served them myself.

The waiting staff had already gone home.

They ate, savouring every bite.

Not because they were pretending to belong.

Because they wanted the evening to last. So happy.

When they finished, the woman reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

She didn’t say thank you.

She said, “I’d forgotten what it feels like.”

I took the money they offered. Enough that their pride stayed intact. Not enough to matter.

After they left, the chef lit a cigarette out the back.

“You’re too soft,” he said.

I laughed.

“So are you.”

He rolled his eyes.

Then we washed pans together.

He stacked them.

I dried them.

Neither of us mentioned the empty dining room.
