In 1900, people looked toward the year 2000 and saw the future.

To be fair, they also predicted things that sound suspiciously like our present.

John Elfreth Watkins Jr., writing in Ladies’ Home Journal in December 1900, predicted wireless communication spanning the world, color photography, faster transportation and even a system that would allow people to see events happening thousands of miles away.

That last one?

Basically television, video calls and livestreaming.

Not bad for a guy living in a world where radio broadcasting hadn’t even become a mass technology.

THE HITS

They imagined telephones connecting people across the world.

The biggest mistake wasn’t that people in 1900 were bad at predicting technology.

It was that they assumed the future would simply be more of the present.

This challenge illustrates an important distinction between planet detection and planet confirmation. A high candidate yield is scientifically valuable, but robust demographic conclusions require careful assessment of false-positive rates, detection efficiency, selection effects, and the statistical completeness of the survey.

Implications for Planet-Formation Theory

The emerging exoplanet census has already demonstrated that the Solar System represents only one possible outcome of planetary formation. The large diversity of observed architectures suggests that planetary systems are shaped by a complex combination of processes, including the properties of their protoplanetary disks, planetary migration, dynamical interactions, and the evolution of their host stars.

Roman’s observations will provide an important test of these ideas by extending observational coverage toward planets with orbital separations that have historically been difficult to measure.

If Solar-System-like configurations prove common, models of planetary formation must account for their prevalence as a significant evolutionary pathway. Conversely, if such architectures prove uncommon, the Solar System may represent an atypical outcome rather than a generic planetary template.

Either result would be scientifically consequential.

The Search for Life: From Planetary Demographics to Biosignatures

The ultimate motivation behind the search for Earth analogues is the possibility that some may harbor life. However, the scientific pathway from exoplanet detection to the identification of extraterrestrial life consists of several distinct stages.

First, astronomers must establish the occurrence rate of planets with appropriate masses and orbital separations. Second, they must determine which of these planets possess physical and atmospheric conditions compatible with habitability. Finally, sufficiently favorable targets may be investigated for potential biosignatures—observable chemical or physical indicators that could be associated with biological activity.

Roman’s principal contribution is expected to occur primarily at the first of these stages: determining the statistical distribution of planets across the Galaxy.

By establishing how frequently terrestrial planets occur at relatively large orbital distances, Roman can provide an essential empirical foundation for subsequent searches for habitable environments and potential biosignatures.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope represents a major expansion of the observational search for planets beyond the Solar System. Its use of gravitational microlensing will complement transit and radial-velocity surveys by probing planets at orbital separations that have historically been underrepresented in exoplanet catalogs.

The mission therefore addresses a fundamental question in planetary science: Is the Solar System a typical planetary system, or an unusual outcome of planet formation?

The answer will have implications extending well beyond the cataloging of individual exoplanets. A statistically robust measurement of planetary demographics will constrain theories of planet formation, migration, and dynamical evolution while establishing the frequency with which potentially Earth-like environments arise.

The discovery of an exact Solar System twin should not be regarded as the sole measure of success. More fundamentally, Roman may reveal the underlying distribution of planetary architectures across the Milky Way. In doing so, it will help transform the search for habitable worlds from a collection of isolated discoveries into a quantitative science of planetary demographics.

The Solar System may not be the universal blueprint for planetary formation. Roman’s observations will help determine just how exceptional—or ordinary—it truly is.

Declassified CIA and National Reconnaissance Office histories reveal how the August 1960 mid-air recovery of the Discoverer 13 capsule went wrong, why the capsule held no film at all, and how a secret plan to swap it before it reached the President never had to be used.

On the morning of August 11, 1960, a US Air Force crew flew directly over the spot where a capsule was falling out of the sky — and arrived just as it hit the water. The aircraft assigned the top recovery slot for Discoverer 13 got there a few seconds too late to catch anything.

It didn’t matter, in the end, who caught it. What mattered was that an object had come back from orbit at all, and that it was American. But the story of how it actually got home — plucked from the Pacific by a cargo ship’s helicopter rather than snagged out of the sky as planned — is stranger and messier than the triumphant photographs released at the time ever let on.

A Bearing 180 Degrees Off

Discoverer 13 lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base on August 10, 1960. After seventeen orbits and roughly twenty-seven hours in flight, its satellite ejected a small recovery capsule toward a patch of ocean northwest of Hawaii, where a fleet of aircraft was waiting to snatch it out of the air mid-parachute.

Captain Harold E. Mitchell held the coveted “number one” position — first in line to make the catch. According to his account in Star Catchers, the National Reconnaissance Office’s internal history of these recovery crews, his navigator picked up the capsule’s radio beacon, but the signal was so strong it swamped the receiver, making it impossible to get a fix. A radar-control aircraft overhead radioed a heading of 285 degrees.

Mitchell’s navigator wasn’t convinced, and asked for a full 360-degree turn to check. Sure enough, the target turned out to be behind them — the controlling aircraft had given them the exact opposite of the correct heading, sending Mitchell’s plane away from the capsule instead of toward it.

Not every declassified account agrees on why the catch failed, and the discrepancy is telling. The CIA’s official CORONA Program History, Volume IV: Recovery from Orbit blames a lost radio bearing and says nothing about a reversed heading. Mitchell’s own recollection blames both the overloaded receiver and the bad heading. A third account, written by CIA historian Kenneth Greer, suggests the whole question may be moot: the capsule, he writes, splashed down well outside the planned zone — close enough for a ship to reach it, but too far for any aircraft to have made the catch regardless of which way anyone was pointed. By Greer’s telling, this wasn’t really a failure at all, but a partial success.

Fished Out by a Cargo Ship

The vessel that actually recovered the capsule was the Haiti Victory, a cargo ship operated for the Navy by the Military Sea Transportation Service. The Navy’s official ship history notes, almost as an aside, that her helicopter lifted a roughly 300-pound capsule out of the water — making her, rather than any Air Force recovery plane, the first ship in history to retrieve an object from orbit.

The capsule survived the wait because it was engineered to. Its designers built in a flotation window of at least 48 hours, after which an electrolytic valve in its base would let it sink — a built-in scuttling mechanism timed to give American crews, and only American crews, a chance to reach it first. If the seas were calm enough, Navy divers could also retrieve it directly.

By the time the capsule made it to Honolulu for shipment back to the mainland, someone — the histories don’t say who — had painted “Compliments of the US Navy” across the shipping container. It’s a small, almost mischievous detail, and it is also nearly all that’s known about the moment: none of the four surviving accounts of the recovery includes a photograph of the can or names the sailors responsible.

Official Histories, Written by the Winners

Nearly everything known about this mission comes from documents written inside the very agencies that ran the program, later declassified and released to the public. That makes them valuable and detailed, but not neutral — and they don’t always agree with each other, even on basic facts.

The CIA’s Volume IV refers to the recovery ship as “USS Haiti Victory”; the Navy’s own register drops the prefix entirely. Greer places the splashdown 330 miles northwest of Hawaii; Volume IV instead references Honolulu. One history has the capsule going on display at General Electric afterward; the other sends it to the Smithsonian — which is indeed where it resides today, carefully described in the museum’s records as “the first man-made object recovered from orbit.” That phrasing matters: it is not the same as saying it was the first object simply returned from space. A previous Discoverer capsule had already fallen back to Earth in 1959, but it came down somewhere near Norway’s Spitsbergen Islands and was never found.

A Cover Story Built on Mice

Discoverer was never really about testing a satellite bus. It was the public face of CORONA, America’s first successful photographic spy satellite program — one of the most closely guarded secrets of the Cold War. To sell the cover story, the program’s planners announced in late 1958 that the Discoverer series would carry biological specimens, including live animals, into orbit as part of ordinary space-conditions research.

The plan called for several dedicated biomedical flights: two carrying mice, and a third meant to carry a primate. Only one such flight was ever attempted, and it failed. Maintaining the cover wasn’t cheap, either — extra launch vehicles had to be justified purely to keep up appearances, and the Defense Department’s research arm balked at footing the bill, eventually forcing program managers to appeal all the way up to the President. Even so, the ruse was thin from the start: journalists had already begun speculating that the predecessor reconnaissance program was military in nature, openly describing it as a “spy in the sky.”

No Film, No Camera, and a Switch That Never Happened

Here is the detail that makes the whole episode almost farcical in hindsight: Discoverer 13 wasn’t carrying a camera at all. It was a diagnostic test flight, its entire payload allowance devoted to instrumentation rather than film. The Smithsonian’s own records confirm this — the recovered object was a gold-plated aluminum shell weighing about 136 kilograms, built by General Electric, packed with magnesium and metal test equipment rather than any photographic hardware.

That didn’t stop the program from milking the recovery for all the publicity it was worth, precisely because the mission’s real purpose needed protecting. Photos of the launch, the floating capsule, and the recovery ship were all released to the press, and President Eisenhower personally displayed the capsule — along with a small flag it had carried into orbit — for cameras.

What almost nobody knew at the time was that contingency plans existed for a much stranger scenario: if the first successfully recovered capsule had turned out to actually contain intelligence film, program officials were prepared to secretly swap it for a dummy during its transit through Sunnyvale, California, before it ever reached the President or the public. Because Discoverer 13 carried no film to hide, that switch was never needed — the object Eisenhower held, and the one now sitting in the Smithsonian, is the real thing.

The Method That Actually Worked

Captain Mitchell felt the sting of the failed catch personally. He later said it felt as though his crew had been blamed for the missed recovery, and one internal history notes — with a touch of dry humor — that the Air Force, its pride wounded, assigned him to a far less prominent recovery zone for the next mission. Mitchell shrugged this off as standard rotation: the crew that held the primary zone on one flight simply drew a secondary zone on the next.

That next flight, Discoverer 14, launched exactly one week later and did carry film. This time, the capsule was caught cleanly out of the air. Mitchell, flying the recovery aircraft, missed his hook on the first pass by six inches and the second by two feet before finally snagging the parachute on his third attempt, roughly 8,500 feet above the Pacific. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross; his crew received the Air Medal.

From that point on, mid-air recovery became the program’s standard method — aircraft trailing a trapeze-like hook beneath their fuselage to snag a descending parachute and winch the capsule aboard mid-flight. Later phases of the program would rack up twenty successful recoveries out of twenty-six attempts, nineteen of them caught in the air rather than fished from the sea — a dramatic turnaround from the confusion of that first August morning.

Even so, the ocean never entirely gave up its cut. Several later capsules splashed down and sank before recovery crews could reach them — sometimes in under three minutes, far faster than anyone had planned for, a reminder that for all the program’s eventual precision, the sea still occasionally got there first.

A glacier does not usually move this fast

On the morning of Wednesday, August 26, 2026, residents near the Nepal–Tibet border felt the ground shake and assumed, reasonably, that it was an earthquake. It registered on seismographs at a magnitude of roughly 4.4 to 5.2. But no fault had ruptured. High above the Bhote Koshi valley, near Langtang Lirung, a section of glacier roughly 2,000 feet wide — together with an adjacent slab of fractured rock — had broken away from the mountain and dropped nearly 7,000 vertical feet into the river below.

Satellite imagery reviewed by analysts afterward showed a raw, 3,000-foot gash torn into the mountainside where the ice had been. The falling mass of ice, rock, and meltwater didn’t simply fall — it liquefied on impact and launched downstream as a debris flood, moving through the first 22 kilometers of the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river system at an average speed of about 193 kilometers per hour, according to an analysis by planetary scientist Jeffrey Kargel. In the Trishuli itself, water levels reportedly rose by as much as nine meters in half an hour.

How a glacier collapse triggered a deadly landslide and flooding along the Nepal-China border

A catastrophic glacier collapse sent a massive torrent of ice, rock, and debris through Himalayan river valleys Wednesday, killing at least 359 people and leaving nearly 1,000 missing, including more than 540 foreign nationals.

The rapid landslide of ice and rock and flash floods that killed hundreds in Nepal and China’s Tibet were triggered when the lower part of a glacier broke off and crashed onto the valley floor hundreds of metres below.

Rescuers continued searching for survivors in the debris-strewn valleys and hillsides of Nepal on Thursday while more than 1,000 people remained missing there.

It is not clear what caused the glacier to collapse. Nepali officials initially pointed to an earthquake in the region as a possibility, but the U.S. Geological Survey later said the reported tremor was in fact seismic energy ​generated by the collapse of glacial rock and ice, followed by debris flow.

Satellite imagery shows a large part of a glacier near Langtang Lirung peak split off when compared with imagery taken a few days earlier.

An avalanche of ice and ​rock swept down the Lhende Khola river, which runs along the mountainous Nepal/Tibet border.

The mudslide slammed into Gyirong ​port in Tibet and into Nepal, creating high-speed flash floods that washed away entire roads and power projects and inundated villages.

Verified videos showed dozens of people swept away at the border.

Chinese government geologist Guo Zhaocheng said the ice-avalanche debris flow that caused the mudslide travelled at about 50 metres (165 feet) per second, leaving people little time to react, and extended for more than 20 km (12 miles).

Flood waters created by the collapse rushed through valleys in Nepal and altered river channels more than 100 km (62 miles) downstream, near the Indian border, after a descent of more than 4,500 metres (14,763 feet) in elevation from the Himalayas.

The Red Cross said that entire villages had ​been destroyed and impassable roads and bridges had left communities cut off. The full scale of the disaster remains unclear, it added.
