Unless Haitians are cutting sugarcane.

Then things get a little more flexible.

There is a story unfolding between the United States and the Dominican Republic that, by itself, would already raise some pretty serious questions about money, political influence and forced labor.

But when you put it next to what the Trump administration is currently doing to Haitian immigrants?

Oh.

It becomes something else entirely.

Let me break this down.

First, Meet Central Romana

Central Romana Corporation is a massive sugar producer in the Dominican Republic.

And in 2022, U.S. Customs and Border Protection did something pretty serious: it blocked sugar and sugar products made by the company from entering the United States.

This wasn’t because somebody found an accounting error.

CBP said it had evidence reasonably indicating five internationally recognized indicators of forced labor involving Central Romana’s operations: abuse of vulnerability, isolation, withholding wages, abusive working and living conditions, and excessive overtime.

Which sounds pretty damn serious.

Because it is.

Under U.S. law, products made wholly or partly through forced labor aren’t supposed to be imported into this country. And CBP has previously explained that it doesn’t modify one of these orders until it has evidence that the merchandise is no longer being produced using forced labor.

So Central Romana had a problem.

If it wanted access to one of the biggest consumer markets in the world again, the expectation was pretty straightforward:

Fix the problem.

Except then something interesting happened.

Donald Trump returned to the White House.

And Central Romana returned to the American market.

And Here Comes the Money

Central Romana is controlled by the Florida-based Fanjul family, a family with deep roots in the sugar industry and some very useful political connections.

José Francisco “Pepe” Fanjul has donated more than $1 million to Trump and the Republican Party, according to Senate Finance Committee materials.

He also hosted a Trump fundraiser in 2024 that reportedly brought in more than $50 million.

And Corporate Accountability Lab reports that Florida Crystals, another Fanjul-owned sugar company, donated $3 million to MAGA Inc. during 2024 and 2025.

Then CBP modified the restrictions against Central Romana after Trump returned to office, allowing its sugar to come back into the United States.

Now.

I want to be careful here.

Political donations followed by favorable government action do not automatically prove a quid pro quo.

There is currently no publicly established evidence showing Donald Trump personally ordered CBP to lift the restrictions because Pepe Fanjul gave him money.

And we shouldn’t pretend there is.

But come on.

When someone financially supporting the president receives a major regulatory decision benefiting his business, asking how that decision got made isn’t conspiracy thinking.

That’s called oversight.

And apparently Sen. Ron Wyden agrees, because he is now demanding that CBP turn over records explaining exactly how Central Romana regained access to the U.S. market.

But here’s where this story gets worse.

Because apparently the workers weren’t all saying, “Thank God, everything is fixed now.”

Quite the opposite.

The Workers Say the Problem Didn’t Go Away

Corporate Accountability Lab just released Bitter Empire, the result of more than three years investigating conditions in Central Romana’s sugarcane fields.

And according to the organization, workers continued reporting many of the same kinds of conditions that caused the U.S. government to intervene in the first place.

Low wages.

Deteriorating housing.

Difficulty obtaining retirement benefits.

Fear of retaliation.

Restrictions on organizing.

A workplace culture where some workers reportedly felt powerless to challenge what they were being paid.

Central Romana strongly denies this characterization.

The company says the report contains inaccuracies and falsehoods, says it has continued improving workers’ living and employment conditions, and says it complies with Dominican law and international labor standards.

So that’s their position.

But there’s one detail about the workforce that makes this much bigger than some corporate labor dispute happening thousands of miles away.

A significant number of these workers are Haitian.

Or descended from Haitians.

And that matters.

A lot.

Suddenly Immigration Status Matters

Haitian migrants and Dominicans of Haitian ancestry make up much of the workforce cutting sugarcane in the Dominican Republic.

Many live with precarious immigration or citizenship status.

Some lack documentation.

Some have few alternatives for employment.

And advocacy organizations argue that precisely those conditions make workers easier to exploit because challenging your employer becomes a much riskier proposition when losing your job could mean losing your housing, your income or attracting the attention of immigration authorities.

Read that again.

Their vulnerability is part of the labor equation.

Which brings us back to America.

Because while all of this is happening, the Trump administration has been fighting to remove protections from Haitians living here.

Haiti’s Temporary Protected Status officially terminated on July 27 after the Supreme Court allowed the administration’s decision to proceed.

Hundreds of thousands of Haitians who had been able to legally live and work in the United States under TPS suddenly found themselves facing the loss of employment authorization and the possibility of deportation.

And that’s the part I can’t stop thinking about.

Because apparently Haitian vulnerability is a crisis when Haitians want protection...

but a business model when somebody needs sugarcane cut.

You See the Contradiction, Right?

One government.

Two very different relationships with vulnerable Haitian people.

When Haitian migrants inside America say conditions back home are dangerous and they need temporary protection:

Your protection is over.

When Haitian and Haitian-descended workers are reportedly living in vulnerable conditions inside an industry shipping products into America:

Well...

how quickly can we get that sugar back across the border?

Now, these are technically two separate policies.

TPS is an immigration policy.

The Central Romana decision is a trade and forced-labor enforcement issue.

Different agencies. Different laws. Different legal questions.

But government policy doesn’t exist in little vacuum-sealed containers.

Eventually those policies reveal priorities.

And that’s what makes this worth examining.

Because the same administration telling Haitians that their vulnerability no longer justifies protection is allowing products back into this country from a company whose workforce reportedly benefits from Haitian workers being extraordinarily vulnerable.

That should bother you.

And Somehow It Gets Even More Absurd

Because just last month, the Trump administration announced a major initiative supposedly aimed at fighting forced labor.

In July, the U.S. Trade Representative announced tariffs against 60 economies over what the administration said were failures to prohibit or effectively enforce bans on products produced with forced labor.

Trump’s own trade representative declared that forced labor was a human-rights abuse and argued governments needed to do more to stop goods produced under those conditions from entering their markets.

Umm… Excuse me?

So we’re going to punish other countries because they’re supposedly not strict enough about keeping forced-labor products out...

while questions are being raised about why our own government relaxed restrictions on a politically connected sugar producer facing allegations that forced-labor conditions persisted?

Y’all.

Pick a policy.

Either forced labor is such a serious moral violation that governments around the world deserve tariffs for failing to stop it...

or it becomes negotiable when the right people have enough access to power.

It can’t be both.

Well.

It can apparently.

That’s kinda the problem.

This Is About More Than Sugar

There’s a temptation to look at stories like this and file them under corruption.

Trump donor.

Government action.

Suspicious timing.

Next story.

But I think something deeper is happening here.

Because immigration systems and exploitative labor systems have always had an uncomfortable relationship.

Businesses benefit from workers who are desperate enough to accept jobs other people won’t.

Workers with insecure immigration status can be especially vulnerable because complaining carries consequences most citizens never have to consider.

Demand better wages?

Maybe you lose your job.

Report your employer?

Maybe somebody starts asking questions about your documents.

Try to leave?

Where exactly are you going?

That vulnerability can become economic leverage.

And then governments turn around and talk about those very same migrants as though they are the threat.

That’s quite the trick.

The person harvesting your food becomes dangerous when he crosses a border.

But invisible when his labor keeps prices low.

So Here’s the Question Nobody Wants to Ask

What if the real issue isn’t whether vulnerable migrants are welcome?

What if it’s where they’re useful?

Because apparently America can have an enormous appetite for the products migrant labor produces while simultaneously having very little appetite for the migrants themselves.

We’ll take the sugar.

We’ll take the fruit.

We’ll take the construction.

We’ll take the hotel rooms cleaned before check-in.

We’ll take the food delivered to the table.

We’ll take cheap labor wherever the economy needs it.

But the actual human being behind that labor?

Now suddenly we need to have a conversation about whether they belong here.

And when the same people being stripped of protection are connected to a workforce whose vulnerability allegedly makes exploitation easier...

maybe the contradiction isn’t accidental.

Maybe it’s showing us exactly how the system sees them.

Not primarily as people needing protection.

Not even necessarily as immigrants.

But as labor.

Useful when cheap.

Disposable when politically convenient.

And that is much uglier than a story about sugar.

Because sugar is just what’s sitting on top.

What’s underneath it is power.

No, seriously.

James Percival, the general counsel for the Department of Homeland Security, has been using his official government social-media account to publicly identify federal judges whose decisions interfered with the Trump administration’s immigration agenda.

And he didn’t call the series something boring like “Judicial Decisions We Strongly Disagree With.”

Nope.

He went with:

“Worst of the Worst, District Judge Edition.”

Because apparently subtlety has left the building.

Percival named federal judges including Matthew Kennelly, Allison Burroughs, Paula Xinis and Hernán Vera, accusing some of “judicial sabotage” and portraying their decisions as examples of judges obstructing the administration’s immigration agenda.

Percival says there’s nothing sinister about this.

According to him, Americans deserve to know which judges he believes repeatedly defy Supreme Court precedent or stretch their constitutional authority. He says the project is intended to educate the public, not intimidate judges.

I’m all for education.

But here’s the problem.

Federal judges are already being threatened.

A lot.

And now you’re putting some of those judges underneath a government-issued banner essentially identifying them as “the worst.”

Y’all.

We need to talk about this.

This Isn’t About Whether Judges Can Be Criticized

Before somebody shows up screaming about free speech, understand something:

Judges can absolutely be criticized.

Please criticize judges.

Presidents can criticize them. Lawyers can criticize them. Journalists can criticize them. Basically…

I get a judge to criticize. You get a judge to criticize. Everyone gets a judge to criticize!

Sorry, I couldn’t help the Oprah-esque reference. But, as I was saying.

Judges make consequential decisions affecting millions of people. Their reasoning deserves scrutiny.

And if the Trump administration believes a federal judge misunderstood the law?

Say that.

File an appeal.

Ask an appellate court to reverse them.

Take the case to the Supreme Court.

Explain precisely why the decision was wrong.

That’s literally how this system is supposed to work.

But there is a pretty massive difference between saying:

“We believe this ruling misapplied Supreme Court precedent.”

and saying:

“Here’s today’s Worst of the Worst judge.”

Those are not communicating the same thing.

And DHS knows it.

Because “Worst of the Worst” isn’t some phrase Percival randomly pulled out of a hat.

DHS has used that branding in campaigns highlighting immigrants whom the department characterizes as dangerous criminals. Percival’s judge series deliberately borrowed that framing.

So think about what you’re communicating.

One day:

Here are the Worst of the Worst criminals we’re removing from America.

Next day:

Here are the Worst of the Worst federal judges standing in our way.

Come on now.

Words have context.

And government officials understand branding probably better than anybody.

Now Add the Part Where Judges Are Receiving Death Threats

This is what makes the whole thing much darker.

The U.S. Marshals Service tracks threats involving federal judges.

Through August 3 of this fiscal year, there had already been 402 threats involving federal judges, with 299 different judges identified as targets.

Axios reported the count had reached 415 threats involving 307 judges by August 17.

So this isn’t one anonymous X troll saying something stupid.

We have hundreds of incidents serious enough to enter the federal government’s judicial-protection system.

And some of the stories behind those numbers are disturbing as hell.

Take Chief Judge John McConnell in Rhode Island.

After rulings involving the Trump administration, McConnell says disturbing calls and emails began pouring into his courthouse. Eventually there were hundreds.

The Marshals Service identified multiple credible death threats against him.

Someone reportedly sought his home address.

His daughter was publicly targeted.

But one incident might tell you more about this climate than everything else.

Someone had a pizza delivered to McConnell’s home.

The order used the name Daniel Anderl.

Daniel was the son of federal Judge Esther Salas.

He was murdered in 2020 when an attacker targeting Salas showed up at the family’s home pretending to be a delivery driver.

Similar pizza deliveries using Daniel’s name were reportedly sent to judges in several states.

Read that again.

Someone invoked the murdered child of one federal judge to send a message to other federal judges.

And this is the environment where DHS’s top lawyer decided America needed a public “Worst of the Worst” judge series.

Yeah.

That’s a problem.

“But Their Names Are Already Public”

Well, yeah. Of course they are.

Federal judges aren’t undercover agents.

Their opinions have their names attached to them. Their biographies are public. Court proceedings are public.

But that completely misses the point.

Visibility isn’t the same thing as targeting.

There’s a difference between somebody’s name appearing on a 70-page judicial opinion and an official federal government account pushing that person’s name to a political audience alongside language like “sabotage,” “mutiny” and “Worst of the Worst.”

One informs you who made the decision.

The other tells you how you should feel about the person who made it.

And when powerful institutions turn individuals into symbols, those individuals can become targets for people who take political rhetoric considerably further than the person who originally said it.

Which is why almost 130 former state and federal judges have joined an ethics complaint against Percival.

The complaint argues that his rhetoric goes beyond legitimate disagreement and risks increasing violence against judges.

One legal ethics expert discussing the controversy with Axios put the concern in extremely stark terms: whatever Percival’s intention, publicly identifying judges this way can function like creating a list of targets for angry people.

And again, we’re not imagining an audience capable of violence.

We already know that audience exists.

But I Think There’s Something Even Bigger Happening Here

Because everybody is focusing on the safety issue.

And they should.

But let’s go underneath that.

What does an independent judiciary actually require?

Not judges who always make the correct decision.

Not judges who agree with Democrats.

Not judges who disagree with Republicans.

It requires judges who can look at whoever currently occupies the White House and occasionally say:

No.

No, you don’t have that authority.

No, that policy violates the law.

No, you cannot do that without congressional approval.

No, the Constitution doesn’t suddenly disappear because your administration finds it inconvenient.

That’s the entire point of separating governmental power.

Congress checks presidents.

Courts check presidents.

Presidents check Congress.

Nobody is supposed to get everything they want.

Annoying?

Absolutely.

Intentional?

Also absolutely.

But what happens when saying “no” to the executive branch carries an increasingly personal price?

What happens when a judge knows that ruling against an administration could mean waking up the next morning to their name and photograph circulating through millions of political feeds?

Maybe impeachment calls follow.

Maybe somebody finds your daughter’s information.

Maybe threats start arriving.

Maybe the Marshals Service suddenly has to evaluate your home security.

Maybe somebody sends something to your house.

That doesn’t mean a judge automatically changes the ruling.

Judges aren’t robots either though.

They’re human beings.

They have spouses.

Children.

Parents.

Homes.

Lives outside the courthouse.

And judicial independence isn’t merely about preventing the president from calling a judge and saying, “Rule my way or else.”

It’s about creating a system where the “or else” doesn’t silently hang over the judge’s head.

That’s Why The Branding Matters

Percival argues he is only focusing on a relatively small number of judges he believes repeatedly make improper rulings.

Fair enough. That’s his defense.

And people should hear it.

But even accepting his explanation doesn’t answer the biggest question:

Why brand them this way, though?

Why “Worst of the Worst”?

Why personalize it?

Why turn complicated legal disputes into individual villains?

If your argument is strong enough, explain the argument.

Show us the precedent.

Show us what the Supreme Court said.

Show us where the district judge supposedly departed from it.

Make the case.

But of course that’s not nearly as emotionally satisfying as giving your audience a bad guy.

And that’s one of the most dangerous habits developing in American politics.

We don’t simply just disagree anymore.

We identify enemies.

The politician isn’t wrong.

They’re evil.

The journalist isn’t mistaken.

They’re corrupt.

The protester isn’t disruptive.

They’re an enemy of America.

And now apparently the judge didn’t issue an incorrect ruling.

They’re one of the Worst of the Worst.

You see where this keeps going, right? Yeah?

The Government Doesn’t Need to Order Anyone to Do Anything

This may be the most uncomfortable part.

Political intimidation doesn’t always arrive as an explicit command.

Nobody needs to say:

“Threat this judge.”

Nobody needs to say:

“Find their address.”

Nobody needs to tell anybody to commit violence.

Sometimes all you have to do is repeatedly identify someone as the person supposedly preventing America from being protected.

Then put their name in front of an angry enough audience.

Over.

And over.

And over.

Most people will probably do nothing.

Some will complain online.

Some will write emails.

But in a country of more than 340 million people?

You’re playing percentages now.

And when judges are already receiving hundreds of threats, pretending that government officials have no responsibility to think about how their rhetoric lands feels incredibly reckless.

Because this isn’t theoretical anymore.

We’ve seen where political obsession with judges can lead.

Esther Salas knows that better than almost anybody.

Her son is dead. And please forgive me if this is reopening wounds as that is not my intent.

Here’s the Question I Can’t Get Past

Imagine you’re a federal judge.

Tomorrow morning a major Trump administration policy lands in your courtroom.

You examine the statute.

You read the precedent.

You look at the Constitution.

And you conclude that the administration broke the law.

Your job requires you to block it.

But you’ve also watched what happened to other judges.

You’ve watched officials call them activists.

You’ve watched politicians demand impeachment.

You’ve watched judges receive threats.

You’ve watched families become targets.

And now you’ve watched DHS’s top lawyer create something called “Worst of the Worst, District Judge Edition.”

Here’s my question:

Does even one tiny part of your brain wonder whether you’re about to be next?

If the answer is yes...

we have a bigger problem than one man’s social-media posts.

We have started introducing fear into the mechanism that’s supposed to restrain government power.

And once judges begin fearing the political consequences of ruling against the executive branch, you don’t need to formally abolish judicial independence.

You just make exercising it increasingly dangerous.

That’s why this matters.

Criticize judges.

Appeal their rulings.

Challenge their reasoning.

Call bad decisions bad decisions. A spade a spade, if you will.

But government officials creating public villain lists of judges while those same judges are facing credible threats?

Heed these words:

That ain’t normal.

And we probably shouldn’t wait until something terrible happens before deciding it went too far.

Great.

They listened.

They’re getting rid of the cameras.

Everybody go home.

Privacy has been restored.

Except...

they’re putting cameras back.

Just different ones.

And y’all, this is the part of the Flock Safety controversy that I think deserves a lot more attention.

Because we’ve spent months arguing about whether cities should be using Flock’s automated license plate readers.

Now some cities have apparently found an innovative solution:

Don’t use Flock’s automated license plate readers.

Use somebody else’s automated license plate readers.

Oh.

Well that fixes everything.

First, what exactly are these cameras doing?

Flock Safety operates one of America’s largest networks of automated license plate readers, or ALPRs.

They’re cameras positioned along roads that can capture license plates and information about vehicles passing them.

Not just vehicles belonging to suspects.

Vehicles.

Period.

Drive through the camera’s field of view and congratulations, your car may now be another entry in a searchable database.

Flock has more than 120,000 cameras across the United States, scanning enormous numbers of vehicles as people go to work, visit friends, attend church, see a doctor, protest, go shopping or basically do anything requiring them to drive somewhere.

Police departments argue these systems can be extremely useful.

And that’s not imaginary.

Officers can use license plate readers to locate stolen cars, identify vehicles connected to crimes and help find missing people.

I understand why law enforcement wants that capability.

The issue is what happens when a tool designed to find a particular car becomes infrastructure capable of documenting everybody’s cars.

Those are not the same thing.

Then people started asking questions

Flock eventually became a giant flashing target for privacy advocates.

People wanted to know who could access the information.

Whether agencies outside their communities could search it.

Whether federal immigration authorities could reach it.

Whether officers could misuse it.

And most importantly, why ordinary Americans who weren’t suspected of anything should routinely have their movements captured in the first place.

Those fears weren’t purely theoretical.

There have been reports of officers abusing license plate reader systems to look up people for personal reasons, including attempts to track romantic interests. Critics have also raised alarms about access connected to federal immigration enforcement.

Eventually cities started responding.

According to the Guardian, at least 56 municipalities have deactivated, canceled or rejected Flock contracts this year.

People understandably celebrated.

Flock was out.

The cameras were going away.

We won.

Except in several places...

No, you didn’t.

Meet the new camera. Same question.

Longmont, Colorado, allowed its Flock contract to expire.

Then, just months later, its city council unanimously approved moving forward with automated license plate readers from Axon, the massive police technology company probably best known for Tasers and body cameras.

Denver did the same dang thing.

The city decided not to renew Flock and moved toward Axon’s license plate reader system instead.

Syracuse, New York?

Flock out.

Axon in.

And that should change how we’re talking about this story.

Because the first question became:

Should cities use Flock?

When the actual question should have always been:

Should cities build networks capable of continuously recording the movements of millions of ordinary drivers?

Those are very different debates.

One is about a corporation.

The other is about government power.

And yes, the differences matter

Now, I don’t want to pretend switching vendors is completely meaningless.

Because it isn’t.

Denver reportedly plans to keep its Axon license-plate data for 21 days, shorter than Axon’s normal 30-day retention period.

Longmont imposed conditions requiring protections for local control of the data, continued public transparency reporting and a one-year review of the program.

Those are real safeguards.

And if one company has stronger privacy protections than another, obviously that matters.

But here’s where I need y’all to stay with me, cause I ain’t done yet.

Imagine somebody says:

“We’ve heard your concerns about being followed everywhere you go, so we’ve replaced the person following you with a more responsible person.”

Um.

Thank you? I guess?

But why am I being followed in the first place?

That’s the question.

Because simply changing who operates the database doesn’t automatically settle whether that database should exist at this scale.

We’re regulating the logo instead of the power

And THIS is what sits underneath the headline.

America has a habit of treating technology controversies like bad-company controversies.

Facebook did something bad.

TikTok did something bad.

Clearview did something bad.

Flock did something bad.

So government investigates the company, criticizes the CEO, rewrites a contract or chooses another vendor.

And we feel like something has changed.

But sometimes the capability survives untouched.

That’s the danger here.

Because if the real problem is mass, suspicionless collection of people’s movements, replacing Flock doesn’t necessarily address that.

You just changed the name printed on the invoice.

Axon has reportedly already stepped into at least seven municipalities across five states where Flock had been used, and the company has openly told investors that customers coming from other vendors have cited Axon’s privacy and ethics record.

Which, from Axon’s perspective, makes perfect business sense.

Competitor gets a privacy scandal?

Walk in and say:

“We do surveillance responsibly.”

That’s capitalism doing capitalism.

But government shouldn’t confuse choosing the nicer surveillance company with deciding how much surveillance government should have.

A whole different conversation.

Los Angeles should be paying attention too

And this isn’t some far-off debate happening in Colorado.

Los Angeles is already dealing with it.

The LAPD suspended use of Flock’s license plate surveillance system amid concerns about data control and sharing. An inspector general audit recommended pausing new ALPR deployments and contracts until stronger privacy, security and oversight protections were established.

Mayor Karen Bass later said LAPD should identify another company that doesn’t share the data.

And again — limiting inappropriate data sharing would absolutely be an improvement.

But do you see the pattern?

The conversation immediately becomes:

Who’s the replacement?

Before we’ve completely answered:

What exactly are we comfortable allowing the replacement to do?

That’s backwards.

Because the technology is only getting more powerful

This is where things start getting uncomfortable.

A license plate reader by itself is one thing.

A body camera by itself is another.

A police drone is another.

A database of digital evidence is another.

Artificial intelligence analyzing all of them?

Different world.

Privacy experts are increasingly warning about what happens when these systems stop existing as individual tools and become one connected ecosystem.

That is the bigger story.

The surveillance state most people imagine looks like some government command center from a dystopian movie. I’m sure you just thought of one, too.

Huge screens.

Government agents watching everybody.

Dramatic music.

Reality might be way more boring.

A camera from one company.

Cloud storage from another.

Body cameras from another.

AI software.

Vehicle databases.

Facial recognition.

Private cameras.

Police databases.

Federal databases.

All gradually connected because each individual step seemed useful enough.

Nobody ever votes for “Build The Surveillance State.”

You approve 40 cameras because they’re supposed to help find stolen cars.

Then another system because it helps find missing kids.

Then another database because officers need to search evidence faster.

Then AI because there’s too much information for humans to process.

And one day somebody realizes...

Oh.

We built one.

So here’s the question nobody wants to ask

What if beating Flock doesn’t mean beating mass surveillance?

What if Flock simply became the company controversial enough to make everybody notice infrastructure that will continue expanding without them?

That would be one hell of a bait-and-switch.

Citizens protest.

Contracts get canceled.

Politicians announce action.

Everyone gets pictures of cameras coming down.

And six months later another camera is watching the same road.

Maybe with somewhat better protections.

Maybe with better security.

Maybe storing information for fewer days.

All worthwhile improvements.

But you’re still recording every plate going past it.

You’re still creating records about people who haven’t been accused of anything.

And you’re still asking citizens to trust that enormous surveillance capability won’t be abused tomorrow because the rules written today seem responsible.

History suggests maybe don’t build civil liberties entirely around trust us.

The answer isn’t necessarily “ban every camera”

This debate needs more nuance than that.

There are legitimate law-enforcement uses for license plate readers.

If a child has been kidnapped and police know the suspect’s vehicle?

Find that car.

If somebody steals your vehicle?

I’d like police to find that too. Wouldn’t you?

Public safety matters.

But civil liberties matter specifically when giving government more power could make public safety easier.

That’s the entire point.

Rights would be pretty meaningless if we only protected them when doing so was convenient.

The question is how targeted these systems can be.

Maybe data unrelated to an active alert should disappear almost immediately.

Maybe searching historical movement should require a warrant.

Maybe outside agencies shouldn’t get access by default.

Maybe every search should produce an auditable record.

Maybe residents deserve public hearings before surveillance infrastructure gets installed instead of discovering it after the cameras appear.

Those are conversations worth having.

The ACLU has argued that the strongest privacy protection is simply not using ALPRs, but where communities do use them, advocates have pushed for warrants and extremely short retention periods. New Hampshire, for example, reportedly limits retention to just three minutes.

Now that changes the conversation.

Because instead of asking which company gets the contract, we’re defining what government is permitted to collect.

Watch the system, not the salesman

Flock deserves scrutiny.

Axon deserves scrutiny.

Every company selling technology capable of monitoring ordinary people deserves scrutiny.

But we can’t become so focused on whichever corporation currently has the worst headlines that we forget what we’re actually debating.

The camera doesn’t become harmless because somebody changed the logo on it.

The fundamental questions remain.

Who gets recorded?

What gets stored?

For how long?

Who can access it?

What crimes justify searching it?

Does anybody need a warrant?

Can federal agencies get it?

What happens when an officer misuses it?

And maybe the most important question:

Does the government actually need to keep a record of where millions of innocent people have been in order to find the relatively small number of people it’s looking for?

Cities can absolutely say they got rid of Flock now.

That’s technically true.

But if another company’s camera is pointed at the same street a few months later...

Then, nah.

We didn’t finish the conversation.

We just changed vendors.

Why do I feel like someone’s gonna make a film or tv show about the consequences of the limits we put on these things just to prove a point?

Well, well, well.

In August 2025, Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and executives from World Liberty Financial stood inside the Nasdaq MarketSite in New York celebrating what they called a major breakthrough.

The cameras were there. The opening bell rang. Eric Trump was introduced as a newly appointed ALT5 board director. Donald Trump Jr. was introduced as a board observer.

And the message was obvious:

This was supposed to be big.

ALT5 Sigma, a relatively small publicly traded financial-technology company, had just announced a $1.5 billion fundraising deal built around purchasing tokens from World Liberty Financial, the cryptocurrency venture backed by the Trump family. ALT5 said the transaction would allow it to hold approximately 7.5% of the entire supply of World Liberty’s WLFI token.

It was presented as the bridge between cryptocurrency and the traditional stock market.

But less than a year later, that bridge appears to have collapsed underneath the investors who were encouraged to cross it.

ALT5, now renamed AI Financial, watched its stock fall from more than $9 around the time of the deal to roughly 53 cents by July 2026. A prospective buyer also walked away from negotiations to acquire one of the company’s subsidiaries.

Meanwhile, the transaction reportedly generated more than $500 million for the Trump family.

So let’s break this down.

Because this is not merely another story about cryptocurrency being volatile.

This is a story about how political celebrity can attract investor money, how a business transaction can produce an enormous payoff for insiders before its long-term promises are fulfilled, and how the people left holding the risk are often the ones standing furthest away from power.

The family won before investors knew they had lost

Here is the part that makes this arrangement so striking.

ALT5 raised $750 million by selling new shares to investors. It then used approximately $717 million of that money to purchase WLFI tokens from World Liberty Financial.

Under the Trump family’s financial arrangement with World Liberty, that token purchase sent more than $500 million to the family, according to a Reuters investigation based on company disclosures.

Read that again.

ALT5 investors provided the capital.

ALT5 converted much of that capital into World Liberty tokens.

And the Trump family received its contractually defined share of the resulting proceeds.

That does not necessarily mean the transaction was illegal. There is currently no public evidence establishing that the parties involved committed fraud or deliberately manipulated the deal for personal gain.

But legality is not the only question that matters.

The more revealing question is this:

Who needed the company to succeed after the transaction was completed?

The Trump family had already received a substantial economic benefit from the token sale.

ALT5 shareholders, on the other hand, still needed the token strategy to work. They needed WLFI to retain value. They needed ALT5’s management to perform. They needed financial reports to arrive on time. They needed the company to maintain its Nasdaq listing. And they needed the market to continue believing that the Trump-linked partnership was worth betting on.

One side benefited when the deal happened.

The other side needed everything that happened afterward to go right.

It did not.

The Trump name was not incidental. It was the sales pitch.

Let’s be real.

You do not put Eric Trump onstage at Nasdaq, introduce him as a board director, identify Donald Trump Jr. as a board observer and surround them with World Liberty Financial executives because their presence is irrelevant.

You do it because the Trump name attracts attention.

Nasdaq’s own description of the August 13 ceremony identified Eric Trump as a newly appointed ALT5 board director and Donald Trump Jr. as a board observer. World Liberty co-founder Zach Witkoff was introduced as ALT5’s new chairman.

The political connection was not hidden in some obscure footnote.

It was standing beside the opening bell.

An investment firm called Kingswood Capital even told clients that ALT5’s decision to get into business with “Trump & Co.” was a clear positive because of the attention and visibility the partnership could generate. The firm later discontinued its coverage of the stock.

So when supporters now attempt to separate the Trump family completely from the company’s collapse, we should remember how the partnership was marketed when everything still looked promising.

The family name helped create the credibility.

The family name helped create the excitement.

The family name helped turn a relatively obscure fintech company into part of a much larger political and financial story.

But once the stock started collapsing, suddenly everyone wanted us to focus on technical distinctions about who did and did not control daily operations.

Funny how that works.

The breakthrough became a breakdown

ALT5’s August 2025 announcement claimed the company would establish a major WLFI treasury strategy and become a leading publicly traded holder of the token.

The deal involved two pieces.

ALT5 sold approximately $750 million in stock for cash. It also issued another $750 million in shares and warrants in exchange for WLFI tokens, bringing the announced value of the combined offerings to $1.5 billion.

But the optimism surrounding the deal did not last.

ALT5 later missed required financial-reporting deadlines and received a Nasdaq noncompliance notice. The company said the notice did not immediately affect its listing, but it was required to submit a plan explaining how it would return to compliance.

The company subsequently changed its name from ALT5 Sigma to AI Financial Corporation and began trading under a new ticker in April 2026.

Now, companies change names all the time. A rebranding alone does not prove misconduct or failure.

But when the rebranding comes after missed filings, management uncertainty and a dramatic decline in shareholder value, people are justified in asking whether the new identity represents a genuine business transformation—or an attempt to move beyond a reputation that has become difficult to defend.

By July 2026, Perpetuals.com had ended negotiations to potentially acquire ALT5 Sigma Canada. Reuters reported that ALT5’s stock had fallen from above $9 at the time of the original World Liberty deal to approximately 53 cents.

The photo at Nasdaq said legitimacy.

The financial record that followed said instability.

Now comes the distancing

This may be one of the most revealing parts of the story.

When the partnership was announced, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. were publicly associated with ALT5’s leadership structure.

Eric was introduced as a board director.

Don Jr. was introduced as an observer.

They appeared at Nasdaq with the company and World Liberty executives to celebrate the transaction.

But as questions grew about the company, representatives for the family began emphasizing that neither son was involved in ALT5’s operations.

A Trump Organization spokesperson later said that Eric and Don Jr. had no involvement with ALT5, no visibility into the company and no knowledge of its leadership team or operations. Eric Trump also publicly denied having any leadership or decision-making authority inside the business.

There may be a legitimate distinction between appearing as a director or observer and managing a company’s everyday business.

But that distinction creates another question:

Why was the family’s proximity to the company valuable enough to promote when investors were being recruited, but supposedly meaningless once investors began asking who should answer for the collapse?

You cannot use your name as part of the credibility package and then act like people were foolish for believing your presence mattered.

You cannot stand beside the opening bell when the company needs attention and then retreat behind the fine print when the stock loses more than 90% of its value.

At least, you should not be able to do that without serious scrutiny.

This is bigger than one failed crypto play

The ALT5 story matters because it resembles a much broader pattern surrounding the Trump family’s cryptocurrency ventures.

A Reuters investigation estimated that the family had generated approximately $2.3 billion from several crypto-related enterprises after Donald Trump returned to power. Those ventures included World Liberty Financial, the $TRUMP meme coin, American Bitcoin and ALT5.

The investigation found several recurring characteristics: the family often contributed relatively little personal capital, aggressively promoted the projects, benefited from insider arrangements and collected enormous financial rewards while many ordinary investors suffered steep losses.

World Liberty’s early investors have also complained about limitations preventing them from fully selling their tokens, even as Reuters estimated that the Trump family had already made more than $1 billion from the venture.

That does not mean every Trump-linked crypto investment is identical.

But it does reveal a business model worth examining.

The political brand creates attention.

The attention creates demand.

The demand creates money.

The insiders secure their compensation.

And when the value eventually falls, everyone reminds the investors that speculative assets involve risk.

Technically, that is true.

But it leaves out an important part of the story.

The risk was never distributed equally.

This is what privatized reward looks like

We hear a lot about the free market.

We hear that investors must accept responsibility for their own decisions. We hear that nobody forced them to purchase a particular stock or token. We hear that profits are rewards for taking risks.

But what happens when the people collecting the largest rewards are not taking the largest risks?

The Trump family’s benefit from the ALT5 transaction came from the structure of the token sale.

Shareholders’ potential benefit depended on the company becoming successful afterward.

That is not an equal gamble.

It is privatized reward and distributed risk.

The people closest to the transaction gained the most immediate economic protection. The people purchasing shares were left exposed to the future performance of a struggling public company and a highly speculative digital asset.

And once those investors began losing money, the people whose political brand helped generate the excitement could simply say they were not involved in daily management.

That may satisfy a carefully worded legal response.

It should not satisfy the public.

The conflict no ordinary president could ignore

There is another reason this story is different from the usual celebrity endorsement gone wrong.

Donald Trump is not simply a television personality or private businessman licensing his name to a cryptocurrency venture.

He is the president of the United States.

His administration shapes cryptocurrency policy.

It appoints regulators.

It influences enforcement priorities.

It signs legislation affecting the industry.

And his family is simultaneously generating extraordinary wealth from that same industry.

The Trump administration has promoted a more crypto-friendly federal agenda, while the president and his relatives have maintained substantial financial interests in cryptocurrency ventures. Critics and ethics experts have argued that this creates an unprecedented conflict between public authority and private profit. The White House has denied that any conflict exists, saying Trump acts in the public interest and that his assets are managed through a trust controlled by his children.

But placing assets in a trust controlled by your own children does not make the financial interests disappear.

And it does not prevent investors from believing that a token connected to the president’s family may receive favorable treatment, political access or regulatory protection.

That perception itself has value.

When proximity to the president becomes part of an investment pitch, the market is no longer evaluating only the technology.

It is evaluating access.

It is evaluating influence.

It is evaluating whether the people behind the project possess a political advantage unavailable to ordinary competitors.

That is not a normal market.

That is political power being converted into private financial value.

The unthinkable question

So here is the question nobody involved seems eager to answer:

Was ALT5 primarily building a sustainable cryptocurrency company—or was the public company most useful because it created a pipeline through which stock-market money could be converted into profitable token sales for World Liberty Financial and the Trump family?

That question is not an accusation of criminal conduct.

It is an examination of incentives.

ALT5 gained the Trump family’s political branding.

World Liberty gained a massive purchaser for its tokens.

The Trump family became entitled to hundreds of millions of dollars from the proceeds.

And ordinary shareholders inherited the long-term uncertainty.

When you examine the transaction through that lens, the results become difficult to ignore.

The family did not necessarily need ALT5 to become the future of finance.

It needed ALT5 to complete the purchase.

The investors needed the future of finance part to actually happen.

They sold the access. Investors bought the risk.

That Nasdaq opening bell was meant to represent the beginning of something revolutionary.

Maybe it did.

Just not in the way investors were told.

It demonstrated how easily political visibility can be transformed into financial credibility.

It demonstrated how public-market money can be moved through a complicated transaction while the people with the strongest political connections collect their benefit early.

And it demonstrated how quickly those same connections can be minimized once the promises begin falling apart.

Again, there is no public evidence proving that the ALT5 deal was an illegal scheme.

But we should not need a criminal indictment before we recognize a system designed to reward those closest to power while leaving everyone else to absorb the consequences.

Investors provided the money.

The Trump name provided the hype.

World Liberty sold the tokens.

The Trump family collected its share.

And the shareholders watched their investment collapse.

So no, this is not just another story about cryptocurrency being risky.

It is a story about who was allowed to collect the reward before the risk arrived.

And somehow, once again, the people closest to power found a way to leave the consequences with everybody else.

There’s a very simple way to understand what just happened with the Election Assistance Commission:

The people who spent years saying Washington should stay out of elections are now trying to use Washington to reshape elections.

And somehow, we’re supposed to act like that isn’t a giant blinking contradiction.

Let’s break this down.

The Boring Agency That Suddenly Matters

President Donald Trump has now removed the remaining members of the Election Assistance Commission, or EAC, the federal agency Congress created after the disaster of the 2000 election. Reuters reported that the remaining three commissioners were forced out in different ways: two Democratic commissioners were fired by email, while the remaining Republican commissioner resigned. Another Republican commissioner had already left earlier this year, which means the commission now has no seated commissioners.

And this is not some random sleepy agency nobody should care about.

Why Congress Created the EAC in the First Place

The EAC was created by Congress through the Help America Vote Act of 2002 after the Bush v. Gore mess exposed how broken America’s election infrastructure really was. Remember the hanging chads? The confusing ballots? The outdated machines? The eligible voters getting turned away because registration systems were a mess? That was the moment Congress realized that leaving every county to figure it out completely on its own was not exactly a recipe for public confidence. The EAC itself says HAVA was passed to make sweeping reforms to the nation’s voting process after the problems identified in the 2000 election.

But here’s the key: Congress did not create the EAC to run elections.

It created the EAC to help states run elections better.

That distinction matters.

The EAC does things like administer federal Help America Vote Act grants, support election officials, help develop voting system guidelines, maintain the national mail voter registration form, and oversee the testing and certification process for voting systems. The EAC says its voting system guidelines cover things like functionality, accessibility, and security, and the national mail voter registration form is used by U.S. citizens to register, update their information, change address, or register with a political party.

So no, this is not “the deep state counting ballots in a basement.”

This is more like the federal government saying, “Hey states, here’s money, guidance, testing standards, security support, and a national baseline so election administration doesn’t look like 5,000 different group projects with no teacher.”

And Congress made it bipartisan on purpose.

The EAC Was Built to Be Bipartisan

By law, the EAC has four commissioners. They are nominated by the president based on recommendations from congressional leaders in both parties, confirmed by the Senate, and no more than two commissioners can belong to the same political party.

That design was not accidental.

Congress knew election administration is sensitive. They knew nobody wants one party grabbing the steering wheel. So they built the EAC like a pressure valve: bipartisan structure, Senate confirmation, shared recommendations, and major decisions requiring broad agreement.

HAVA also says any action the commission is authorized to carry out requires approval from at least three members.

So What Happens When There Are No Commissioners?

So when the commission has zero members?

The agency is effectively frozen at the top.

Staff may still handle routine work, but the commission itself cannot take official major action. It cannot vote on new policy. It cannot approve major changes. It cannot move like a functioning commission because there is no commission.

And this is where the whole thing gets messy.

The Proof-of-Citizenship Fight

Because one of the things Trump and his allies have been pushing is a documentary proof-of-citizenship requirement for voter registration. His executive order tried to require proof of citizenship when people register to vote, change mail ballot rules, and punish states that did not comply by withholding certain federal grants. But a federal judge permanently blocked most of that executive order, ruling that the Constitution gives Congress and the states — not the president — authority over elections.

So the executive order route hit a wall.

The congressional route hit a wall too. The SAVE America Act, which would create a proof-of-citizenship requirement, passed the House but has stalled in the Senate.

That leaves the agency route.

The EAC maintains the federal voter registration form. So if you can pressure the EAC into changing that form, you may be able to force a major election rule change without passing a new law through Congress.

Except now the EAC has no commissioners.

So on one level, Trump may have just stalled his own agenda. You cannot force the EAC to vote on a new proof-of-citizenship requirement if there is no EAC commission available to vote.

But on another level, this may be the whole point.

The Clean Slate Strategy

Because this looks less like one move and more like a strategy: clear the board, remove the bipartisan guardrails, create a vacancy crisis, then try to rebuild the commission with people more willing to carry out your agenda.

That is the “clean slate” theory.

And this is where the contradiction becomes impossible to ignore.

States’ Rights — Until States Don’t Do What They Want

For years, many Republicans argued that the EAC should not even exist. They framed it as federal overreach, government bloat, and Washington interfering in state and local election responsibilities. In 2011, then-Rep. Gregg Harper introduced a bill to eliminate the EAC, saying it would save taxpayers about $14 million a year.

The argument was basically: elections belong to the states, not Washington.

Fine. That is a coherent federalism argument.

But now?

Now the same political movement that once treated the EAC as an unnecessary federal intrusion is trying to use federal power to dictate how states register voters, count mail ballots, and administer elections.

And Trump has not exactly been subtle about it. Earlier this year, he said Republicans should “take over” voting in at least “many — 15 places” and that “Republicans ought to nationalize the voting.” Votebeat noted that this was an extraordinary challenge to state and local power, and that the executive branch taking over election administration without Congress would likely be unconstitutional.

So which is it?

Are elections a state and local responsibility?

Or should Republicans “nationalize the voting”?

Because it cannot be both.

Unless the actual principle is not states’ rights.

Unless the actual principle is control.

And that is the part people need to sit with.

When federal oversight helps protect voters, modernize machines, secure systems, support disabled access, or provide bipartisan election guidance, suddenly it is “Washington overreach.”

But when federal power can be used to pressure states, restrict voter registration, threaten funding, or impose national voting rules from the top down, suddenly federal power becomes necessary.

Nah. That is not federalism.

That is convenience.

That is “states’ rights when we like the state’s rules, federal takeover when we don’t.”

And let’s be real: that is a dangerous way to run a democracy.

Because election administration is not supposed to be a loyalty test. The whole reason agencies like the EAC are designed with bipartisan balance is because election rules need legitimacy. People need to believe the system is not being rewritten by whichever party happens to control the White House.

That is why this vacancy crisis matters.

Not because the EAC is perfect. Not because federal agencies are above criticism. Not because election administration should never change.

It matters because you do not strengthen trust in elections by firing the referees months before the game and then saying, “Don’t worry, we’ll pick new ones.”

Especially when you have already announced the outcome you want.

The Loyalty Trap

And here is the other trap: Trump cannot simply replace everyone with loyal Republicans. HAVA requires no more than two commissioners from the same political party, and commissioners must be confirmed by the Senate.

So if he wants a functioning commission, he needs a bipartisan slate.

That means he needs Democrats too.

And any Democrat willing to join this commission under these circumstances is going to face heavy scrutiny, because the obvious question will be: are you there to preserve the EAC’s bipartisan purpose, or are you there to give bipartisan cover to a partisan election agenda?

That is the loyalty trap.

And that is probably why this may not be resolved quickly.

The EAC has been paralyzed before. The agency has a long history of vacancies and quorum problems because Congress and the Senate have fought over whether the agency should exist and who should lead it. This is not some brand-new tactic. If you cannot abolish the agency by law, you can make it weak by refusing to staff it.

Now that same paralysis is being reintroduced right before the 2026 midterms.

And maybe that is the danger.

Chaos Might Be the Point

Maybe the goal is not just to change the rules.

Maybe the goal is to create enough confusion, distrust, and administrative chaos that whatever happens in November can be questioned afterward.

Because if the EAC cannot fully function, election officials lose a federal partner. If guidance slows down, states are more isolated. If certification processes stall, equipment decisions get messier. If grants are delayed or uncertain, local officials who already operate on tight budgets have one more headache. And if the public sees the federal election agency sitting empty before a major election, that alone feeds distrust.

That is why “chaos” cannot be dismissed as incompetence.

Sometimes chaos is useful.

Sometimes breaking the machine gives you an excuse to say the machine was broken.

And that is what makes this moment so serious.

The EAC was born out of a crisis of confidence after 2000. It was designed to prevent election administration from becoming a partisan free-for-all. It was supposed to help states, not replace them. It was supposed to create stability, not become another weapon in the culture war.

Now the party that spent years saying the federal government should get out of elections is standing behind a president who is trying to force the federal government deeper into elections — but only in the ways that help his side.

That is the contradiction.

That is the story.

And that is why this is bigger than one obscure commission.

The Real Question: Control or Integrity?

Because when politicians say “states’ rights,” we need to ask: do they actually mean states’ rights, or do they mean “whatever level of government gives us the result we want”?

When they say “election integrity,” we need to ask: do they mean secure elections, or do they mean harder access to the ballot?

And when they say “confidence in elections,” we need to ask: confidence for whom?

Because firing the people responsible for bipartisan election guidance right before a midterm does not look like confidence.

It looks like control.

And no matter how boring the acronym sounds, the EAC matters because democracy is often protected by the boring stuff: forms, grants, certification rules, audit standards, accessibility guidelines, and independent officials doing unglamorous work before anyone casts a ballot.

That is the part authoritarians always understand before the public does.

You do not have to cancel an election to weaken democracy.

Sometimes you just hollow out the institutions that help keep elections fair, then act shocked when people stop trusting the process.

So yes, let’s talk about the EAC.

Because if somebody is trying this hard to control the boring agency, maybe it was never that boring in the first place.

There is no clean way to talk about the Karmelo Anthony verdict without first saying the most important thing:

Austin Metcalf should still be alive.

He was 17 years old. He went to a high school track meet and never came home. His family is living a nightmare that no parent, sibling, teammate, or friend should ever have to live. Nothing about political analysis, racial context, or criticism of the justice system should erase the fact that a child died.

That has to be said first.

But it cannot be the only thing said.

Because Karmelo Anthony was also 17 when this happened. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison. One family lost a son to death. Another family lost a son to the prison system. And the rest of the country did what it always does: picked a side, turned the case into a culture-war weapon, and skipped right past the deeper question.

How does America keep producing these moments?

And why does the legal system seem to understand fear so differently depending on who is claiming it?

That is the part Black people recognize.

Not because every case is identical. They are not. Not because every Black defendant is innocent. That is not the argument. Not because Austin Metcalf’s life does not matter. It absolutely does.

The pattern is something more specific and more painful.

Black people have watched this country repeatedly stretch the concept of self-defense when the person killed is Black. We have watched courts, commentators, police narratives, and public opinion find every possible way to humanize the person who pulled the trigger, swung the weapon, escalated the conflict, or claimed fear.

We watched George Zimmerman kill Trayvon Martin and walk free.

We watched Kyle Rittenhouse carry a rifle into a volatile protest, kill two people, wound another, claim self-defense, and walk free.

We watched Rick Chow, a store owner in South Carolina, get acquitted after fatally shooting 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton in the back after chasing him from a store.

Again, these cases are not the same. The facts are different. The laws are different. The states are different.

But the question underneath them keeps sounding familiar:

Who gets to be afraid?

Who gets to claim they felt threatened?

Who gets to be seen as acting in the heat of the moment?

Who gets complexity?

Who gets the benefit of the doubt?

And who gets turned into a threat before the trial even begins?

That is why the phrase “the justice system is broken” has always felt incomplete to me.

Because broken implies accident.

Broken implies malfunction.

Broken implies the machine was designed to do one thing but keeps failing to do it.

But what if the machine is doing exactly what it was built to do?

What if the system was never designed to treat everyone’s fear, innocence, childhood, anger, panic, or mistakes the same way?

What if it has always been a sorting mechanism?

A system that sorts who is dangerous and who is misunderstood.

Who is a child and who is a criminal.

Who made a mistake and who revealed their true nature.

Who deserves mercy and who deserves a message sent through their sentence.

That does not mean every verdict is legally wrong. It means every verdict happens inside a country that has already trained people how to see race before they ever enter a courtroom.

The courtroom does not exist outside America.

The jury box does not exist outside America.

The law does not float above history.

It carries history with it.

It carries the history of Black boys being seen as older than they are. More dangerous than they are. Less innocent than they are. Less worthy of protection. Less worthy of softness.

It carries the history of white fear being treated as reasonable, even when that fear ends with somebody Black dead.

It carries the history of Black fear being treated as aggression, even when that fear is rooted in real experience.

And that is why Black people heard this verdict differently.

Because we are not just reacting to one trial in Texas.

We are reacting to memory.

Now we need nuance.

Now we need context.

Now we need to understand the shooter’s state of mind.

Now we need to talk about fear.

Now we need to talk about split-second decisions.

Now we need to talk about whether the victim looked suspicious, ran away, fought back, had a past, wore a hoodie, was in the wrong place, said the wrong thing, or made the wrong movement.

That is the pattern.

And Black people recognize patterns because we have had to.

Recognizing the pattern does not mean ignoring Austin Metcalf’s death. It means refusing to ignore the system surrounding Karmelo Anthony’s life.

A child is dead.

Another child is in prison for decades.

Two families are destroyed.

And somewhere in the middle of all that grief, America is still trying to pretend this is only about one bad moment between two teenagers.

But it is bigger than that.

It is about school environments where conflict can turn deadly.

It is about young people carrying fear, pride, pressure, anger, and trauma into spaces that adults are supposed to make safe.

It is about a justice system that often waits until after the damage is done to perform accountability.

It is about a culture that treats punishment as proof of justice, even when punishment does not heal the dead, restore the living, or prevent the next tragedy.

And it is about race, whether people want to admit that or not.

Race does not have to be shouted in court to be present.

It can show up quietly.

It can show up in which family receives public sympathy and which family receives suspicion.

It can show up in the way one teenager is remembered as a promising young man and the other is reduced to the worst thing he ever did.

So no, I do not look at this case and simply say the system is broken.

I think the harder truth is that the system is revealing itself.

It is showing us what it values.

It is showing us who it believes.

It is showing us whose fear counts.

It is showing us whose future can be sacrificed so the public can feel like justice has been served.

And again, none of this brings Austin Metcalf back.

That is the tragedy.

This is one of those moments.

On Saturday in South Minneapolis, Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was shot and killed during an encounter with federal immigration agents. Within hours, the Department of Homeland Security released a familiar explanation: the man was “armed.”

That word—armed—is doing a lot of work here.
Too much work.

Because video recorded by bystanders tells a far more complicated story—one that DHS has so far declined to fully explain.

The Video vs. the Press Release

DHS has released a photo of a handgun and magazines. What they have not released is a complete, second-by-second timeline of events.
