]]><![CDATA[The best race of your life... so far ]]>https://mamilrepeller.substack.com/p/the-best-race-of-your-life-so-farhttps://mamilrepeller.substack.com/p/the-best-race-of-your-life-so-farMon, 10 Aug 2026 14:39:39 GMTEvery year when the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift draws to a close the most recent edition is labelled as the ‘best one yet’. Far from some kind of recency bias or a case of people getting swept up in the excitement of it all, there is truth behind the sentiment. Since 2022 and the first edition of this modern-day women’s Tour, each subsequent year has brought better racing, a higher level, greater traction and more challenging parcours. This year, the growth has been even more evident. It showed in the number of riders challenging for jerseys, stage wins, and top-10 GC positions, the narrow margins in the fight for yellow and the number of times the jersey changed hands. Even the fact that we saw multiple teams with more than one potential GC leader in their ranks. Demi Vollering has made history by becoming the first woman to win two editions of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, and she has done it during the toughest edition so far and with the peloton at their highest level.

The upward trajectory is steep but, of course, there’s still a long way to go in many respects. There is still a huge gap between the Continental-level invitee teams and the WorldTour squads. Even amongst the WorldTour teams there are stark differences. One of the biggest driving forces behind this is, of course, money. These inequalities are widely reported on every year by The Cyclists’ Alliance from data collected in their Rider Survey. A rising tide lifts all boats, but not every boat is made equal.

Still, there is more cause for hope than ever. The success of this race both from a racing and entertainment perspective, viewership figures, engagement and the physical level of the peloton makes the next year’s edition an even more exciting prospect. I can’t wait for it to come to the UK! Here’s hoping that ASO cave into the pressure applied during this year’s race and broadcast each stage from start to finish.

If I had to pick a favourite stage from this year’s race it would be stage 6 for the sheer drama, closely followed by Sigrid Haugset’s win on stage 3. What’s yours?

I have many thoughts and opinions on Corner Gate (spoiler: Gery was in the wrong) but if you are interested in hearing more tune into the Stanley St. Social pod.

So, how’s it all going to end? Will Demi Vollering keep yellow? Will Kasia Niewiadoma claw back the 8 second deficit? Will Marlen Reusser hold on to third or can Elisa Longo Borghini overthrow her for a podium spot? Maybe something completely unexpected is going to happen instead. It wouldn’t be out of the question.

Of following the protagonists and not, like Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, having to wish she were a boy so she could race for yellow. If ever there was a performance at this race to inspire others it’s Kasia Niewiadoma - Phinney’s. Not just yesterday, not even during this race but before she even took to the start line in Lausanne last weekend.

On paper, this year’s course didn’t seem to favour her, with a long-ish ITT and a queen stage that finished on Ventoux, a climb that doesn’t lend itself to her punchier style of racing. But Niewiadoma wasn’t deterred. The former overall winner honed in on her weaker points with another yellow jersey in mind.

Yesterday it paid off, and in style. After launching one of her trademark punchy attacks she kept the move going without looking back. While her rivals looked at one another behind she soldiered on, head down and teeth gritted she churned out incredible power into a brutal headwind on her way to her first stage win at the Tour and into the overall lead. Her rivals and also many onlookers underestimated Nieiwadoma - Phinney at this race and on this stage. She has had myriad disappointments in the form of narrowly-missed wins throughout her career but her tenacity has remained and she has refused to temper her aggressive racing style. That conviction has helped carry her to this historic victory (and “historic” is not used as hyperbole here, her power numbers are said to have broken records).

Outside of her performance, Niewiadoma - Phinney has been the consummate team leader at Canyon // SRAM. We frequently see her expressing gratitude for her teammates, in particular Antonia Niedermeier who could just as well have been positioned as a threat to her leadership as the new up-and-comer. She has also continued to exude the same light-hearted and approachable attitude that has brought her so many fans over the years, always smiling and aways herself — a person who enjoys racing — and riding — her bike.

Niewiadoma’s win is a lesson in perseverance and self-confidence that anyone can take notes from, young girls included.

  • Anna van der Breggen did not take to the start of stage 7. Her team, SD Worx - Protime, said in a press release that she will “take an early period of rest following a difficult week of racing, during which it quickly became clear that she was unable to perform at her usual level.”

What an incredible win from Kim Le Court - Pienaar yesterday. From being off the back with a mechanical earlier in the stage, to bridging (with help from Riejanne Markus) across to the break, lighting up the final and then sprinting for the win.

And just like that it’s Ventoux day! It’s going to be hot, it’s going to be windy, the GC is close, who’s got the legs? Of course, whatever happens, remember: it’s just a bike race, apparently.

The last hour or so of yesterday’s stage has to have been one of the best in TDFF history. Demi Vollering throwing down myriad attacks on the steep slopes of the final climb and Kasia Niewiadoma and Marlen Reusser following all the way, PFP and AVDB getting dropped, that fast descent, and then a super tense finish. Some were caught out amid the GC fireworks while others, including 21-year-old Bella Holmgren and new white jersey leader Antonia Niedermeier, came to the fore. On the surface the GC gaps might look quite big from third place onwards but, as multiple riders have said in post-race interviews, anything can happen.

I’ve honestly given up trying to predict what will happen so I’m not even going to posit anything for today’s stage because, while it looks like it could be for a breakaway, the GC contenders probably won’t be able to resist taking a few swipes again.

Apologies for not sending this last night. A few of the podcasts and other things that I usually include weren’t out yet by the time I went to bed and I’d prefer to wait and include them rather than leave things out!

I confess I usually find time trials very boring. Aerodynamics don’t do much for me and the visuals of following one rider with no real perception of how fast they are going apart from at sparse time checks (more than one if you’re lucky) aren’t the most riveting.

Yesterday’s stage was still pretty tricky to follow at times (camera bike allocation minimal, next to no visuals of the early fast time of Lieke Nooijen) but because it was also pretty much the first real GC test of the race it was super exciting. Also, I might not be interested in aerodynamics but even I could see that PFP’s position left a lot to be desired. Apparently she had tested it in a wind tunnel which is even more baffling. The theory that it’s related to iliac artery endofibrosis issues would make sense except she refuted that herself in a post-race interview.

So Ferrand-Prévot is now 2’13” down on the new race leader, Marlen Reusser — who won the stage but not by the margin that some might have expected — and 1’59” behind Demi Vollering. Ferrand-Prévot reckons she’ll enjoy the chase to make up the time gap but if Vollering is on the form she seems to be then it might just be unassailable.

Other notable rides from a GC perspective came from Kasia Niewiadoma who, by her own admission, isn’t usually the most comfortable on a TT bike. The former TDFF champion has clearly put in the work and it’s paid off big time. She only lost 1’08” to Reusser which is a big win, especially considering Ferrand-Prévot’s time. Elisa Longo Borghini was on a storming ride that might have put the UAE leadership debacle to bed but she had to have a late bike change that cost her valuable seconds and saw her finish just 1 second ahead of Paula Blasi. Cédrine Kerbaol put down a very respectable time too finishing 7th and 54s down.

There’s a chance that we might see those who lost time yesterday, Kim Le Court-Pienaar, Anna van der Breggen, Ferrand-Prévot, attack today’s punchy stage to claw back some seconds. I’d love to see it. An Ardennes-style stage would play right into Demi Vollering’s hands, though, and if Lidl-Trek are still racing every day for stage wins then we’ll hopefully see more attacking from them. Plus, polka-dot jersey Puck Pieterse lost a heap of time yesterday and looks ripe for a stage win hunt.

For the second time (out of three) we will have live coverage of the whole stage so plonk yourself in front of the TV from 13:30 CEST or else.

Not even she herself imagined that it was possible as she outlined in probably one of the most entertaining post-race interviews I’ve seen for ages. When the Norwegian champ rolled off the front with 85 km to go it didn’t seem likely that she would last all the way to the line, even when her gap was out to 5 minutes, especially with Lotte Kopecky in hot pursuit. Haugset’s ride will go down as one of the most legendary in TDFF history, and is quite literally one for the history books as the first Norwegian to win a stage and also wear yellow plus the longest solo move.

The question is why other teams didn’t want a bite of the cherry today. Besides SD Worx with Kopecky it’s baffling that no other team wanted a part in rolling the dice for the stage. Sure, we saw some GC action but it was all quite random and amounted to nothing. Kim Le Court-Pienaar, Demi Vollering and Kasia Niewiadoma’s attacks exposed a bit of weakness in Pauline Ferrand - Prevot, Anna van der Breggen and Paula Blasi but will that really translate to much in a few days’ time or was it just poor positioning in the moment?

Meanwhile, I think we’ll be looking at some gaping GC holes amongst the GC cohort by the end of tomorrow’s ITT. Plus, the unknown quantity of PFP, who has not raced an ITT since returning to the road, will be an interesting one to watch. There’s no chance she’s not been training for exactly this moment since the route was announced but how will she match up against Reusser, AvdB and co? Tell me your ITT predictions

Rinse and repeat, kind of. It was so good to see the other teams pile the pressure on SD Worx today after Riejanne Markus’s fantastic move. What a ride, she really made SD Worx earn that Wiebes win, even AvdB had to get on the front. MVP in that team has to go to Mischa Bredewold who looked like she was dying 1000 deaths but still kept going on the front of the bunch to bring Markus back. It was clear from about 1 km to go what was going to happen but it was pretty juicy there for a bit so thanks Trek, and thanks Riejanne for the entertainment, please keep going with the attacks!!!

As for Wiebes, there’s nobody like her, is there? Just in an absolute class of her own. It’s a shame/surprising to see some of the other sprint favourites get dropped but if we are realistic there was only ever going to be one outcome once Wiebes made it to the finishing straight. Career win number 134 and Tour win number 7, thanks very much.

Tomorrow’s stage looks a bit too hard for the sprinters and is front loaded with some tricky-looking climbs. How do you think the stage will play out?

  • Unfortunately we have some more riders out of the race including Brodie Chapman who was forced to pull out before the start having come down with a fever overnight. A huge loss for UAE! Fenix - Premier Tech also lost Christina Schweinberger after her crash yesterday while Lotto Intermarche lost three riders during the stage in Elisabeth Ebras, Marieke Meert and Sterre Vervloet. Laura Molenaar of VolkerWessels was also a DNF.

  • (via Daniel Benson) Yana Seel is set to leave UAE Team L’IMAD citing: “a divergence in our strategic visions for the team’s future development.”

  • Ashleigh Moolman Pasio, who is set to retire at the end of the season, will join Team Amani as General Manager in an effort to boost the team’s quest to start at the Tour in 2028.

From that huge time gap early on that then just evaporated to Amanda Spratt going on the attack, Reusser crashing, EVERYONE crashing at one point it seemed. And then the finish: Wiebes was, and also wasn’t, the favourite ahead of today. She had a pretty hard climb to overcome if she was going to sprint for the win and the first yellow jersey and honestly, I didn’t back her to do it. I don’t think I was the only one. But the race played right into her hands and she delivered an absolute banger of a sprint leaving a group of GC favourites in her wake. It’s looking very much like she’s going to do it all again tomorrow, too. Let’s hope the nerves have calmed down and the other teams are ready to try and throw everything at making the stage hard for Wiebes and SD Worx — a TDFF stage win is at stake, after all.

It’s been a minute. I’ve made various stuttering attempts to restart this newsletter after taking maternity leave last year but this time it’s for real, WCW is back and what better time to return than for the Tour de France Femmes!! I’m so excited for what is set to be the best edition yet thanks to a varied parcours that doesn’t lean too heavily on one climb or stage. Sure, we’ve got the small (giant) matter of Ventoux in there but there are so many other opportunities for time to be won and lost (including an ITT!) and the field is stronger than it’s ever been.

I’ll be bringing you daily newsletters here as well as podcasting with the guys (+ appearances from Brodie Chapman) over at Stanley St Social. I won’t be on the ground 💔 but we’ll still be covering and analysing everything that happened on each stage so make sure to tune in.

It’s frustrating when negative discourse around women’s races transcends the amount of usual coverage they might otherwise receive. That there were scores of misogynistic comments questioning the skills of the riders, or just being downright offensive, after the crash at Milano Sanremo over the weekend is disappointing and frustrating to say the least. It does feel like a step backwards to see some bloke who’s profile picture could be mistaken for a toe commenting that the riders should have been in the kitchen, or the crash happened cause ‘wimmin drivers init lololol.’ However, my (don’t cancel me) take is that we shouldn’t be giving these morons even half of the oxygen they are getting.

The irony of me writing about this very topic right now has not passed me by, but I feel compelled to use this platform to entreat that we do not give these people the very thing they are looking for: engagement, outrage, clicks, views etc. I actually hadn’t seen any of these comments myself, the first I knew of it was when myriad posts, articles and videos popped up from people both within and outside of the usual cycling media landscape expressing their (rightful) anger about them. Just to be clear: my sentiment towards these sad little commenters is aligned with everyone who is publicly condemning them but my frustration towards the situation is compounded when the discourse created by these trolls overshadows any other conversation around an otherwise brilliant race.

One of the best things I saw online recently (and there’s scant few good things out there these days) was this Instagram. It’s run by an author called Tetyana Denford who makes reels wherein she starts with a clip of an influencer or podcaster spewing whatever toxic bile and then cuts them off with the most perfectly nonchalant delivery of: “nobody cares” before launching into a fascinating tidbit about, for example, the shape of raindrops. There is a difference between targeted, hateful comments under a post of women simply doing their jobs and the grifters and proliferators of toxic content that Denford uses in her posts but the premise is pretty similar: don’t give them the time of day, look at/listen to/watch this instead.

So, here’s that thrilling final few kms again. And, of course, I am glad to hear that Debora Silvestri and the others involved in the crash are (relatively) okay. My parting thought on this is that what we should collectively summon more outrage for is this cursed attention economy we live under wherein things like awful crashes in bike races (aka anything shocking or outrageous or negative) will garner far more attention and be proliferated online far more than any amazing feat of athleticism would for those all-important clicks and views. One Google of Silvestri’s name followed by a toggle of the ‘news’ tab says it all — since when did GB News cover women’s cycling?

  • Elisa Longo Borghini was forced to pull out of racing Milano Sanremo Donne due to illness. "Due to virus disease with upper respiratory tract infection developed overnight, Elisa Longo Borghini will not start Milano-Sanremo Women," the team said in a post.

  • Marianne Vos also had to withdraw from taking to the start line “after receiving news that her father’s health is critical.”

  • Race organisers RCS are apparently seriously looking into adding a women’s edition of Il Lombardia “but it's not easy.” Cycling News got the scoop.

Growing and birthing and taking care of a baby is bloody difficult and tiring and time consuming and — with limited access to the fêted ‘village’ — generally not conducive to sitting down at a laptop and jumping around the cycling internet to find bits of news and content and results and putting it all together in a newsletter. WHO KNEW (me).

I know I said I would restart regular programming in time for TDU but one of the many lessons that parenting has taught me so far is to learn to exist in the chasm that lies between expectation and reality so, alas, here we are two months later. I feel very fortunate that my return to ‘work’ (in the limited capacity that I am now even undertaking any, tbh) postpartum is entirely within my own control. I hate that that isn’t the case for so many. Anyway, here I am tentatively reviving WCW — subject to the ebbs and flows of my free time and energy, results may vary — just in time for some of my favourite races of the season!

You may also notice that this is reaching your inbox on a Monday rather than a Friday: since we’re starting up again I thought I’d change something I’d wanted to correct for a while; races usually take place at the weekend ergo it makes far more sense to send out the newsletter after they have happened to include the most recent and relevant results etc.

You might have noticed that this newsletter hasn’t been in your inbox for a few weeks, and that this isn’t the usual day for it to be published. As a new mum with other commitments alongside this newsletter I struggle to find time in my week to dedicate to collecting all of the information that goes into the weekly round-ups. My daughter was born in June, the height of the summer racing season, and I was committed to continuing to send out a weekly newsletter which is where the wonderful Lulah came in. However, with the road racing season over for 2025 and no outside help with putting the newsletter together I feel the best course of action is to pause WCW until the start of the 2026 season. This Substack began as a passion project in 2020 when my life and career were in an entirely different place (aka I had all the time in the world to curate it). Since the flow of news, content and results to share slows down considerably at this time of year anyway, WCW will take a break until the 16th of January and the return of the WorldTour racing season with Tour Down Under. Until then, below this note you will still find a few bits of content and news from the last few weeks.

  • Former British National Champion (and friend of WCW x), Lizzie Holden, has announced that she will retire. The 28-year-old cited “a difficult few years” including a bad crash earlier this season as the reason behind her departure from the sport: “It feels like the right time to move on to a new chapter. I don’t know exactly what will be next yet, but feeling a mix of scared & excited to see what else is out there,” she wrote in an Instagram post earlier this week.

  • Mavi Garcia has signed a one-year contract with UAE Team ADQ for whom she raced in 2022. The 41-year-old announced that 2026 will be her final year of racing.

  • American Continental-level team, Cynisca Cycling will take a hiatus in 2026 following an unsuccessful attempt to find a new sponsor.

What a wonderfully unexpected outcome last weekend in Rwanda. Nobody deserved to win that race more than Magdeleine Vallieres. The Canadian gave the it her all as the favourites stalled and played a cagey game behind, and it paid off for her. Chapeau, Magdeleine.

Meanwhile, there’s already another Championship title up for grabs this Sunday albeit one from which the newly-crowned Vallieres is precluded from competing: Europeans. This one caught me by surprise since I was under the impression that Europeans usually took place around June and I was a bit busy at that time what with birthing a child etc. but anyway!!

Marlen Reusser already claimed the ITT title to back up her World Champs win, could she double up with the road race too? Defending champ Lorena Wiebes won’t be on the start line so the blue and white jersey will change hands, the question is who will claim it?
