One of the questions I get asked almost every week is, “If I could only invest in one functional lab test, which one should I choose?”

It’s an understandable question. Functional testing can feel overwhelming, expensive, and honestly, a little confusing. Between hormone panels, stool testing, mineral analysis, food sensitivity tests, organic acids, genetics, and dozens of other options, it’s easy to feel like everyone online is telling you that their favorite test is the missing piece.

The truth is, there isn’t one perfect test.

If there were, I promise I’d be recommending it to every single client that walks through my door.

The women who find their way into my practice are rarely looking for another lab test. They’re looking for answers. They’re tired of feeling exhausted despite getting enough sleep. Their periods have become heavier, more painful, or increasingly irregular. They’re struggling with fertility, brain fog, stubborn weight gain, digestive symptoms, anxiety, low libido, or a body that simply doesn’t feel like it used to. Many have already had conventional blood work completed and have been told that everything looks “normal.”

And yet they know, in every fiber of their being, that something has changed.

Over the years, I’ve come to realize that one of the hardest parts of navigating chronic symptoms isn’t necessarily the symptoms themselves. It’s beginning to question your own experience because every test you’ve had says you’re fine. I can’t tell you how many women have sat across from me and admitted that they were starting to wonder if they were making it all up.

They’re not. Your body is always communicating.

The challenge is that our current healthcare model is largely designed to identify disease, or chase symptoms. Functional medicine, at its best, is asking a different question. Instead of simply asking whether a disease is present, we’re asking why your physiology may no longer be functioning optimally.

We’re looking for the subtle patterns that often develop years before disease is diagnosed: changes in blood sugar regulation, declining mineral reserves, chronic nervous system activation, impaired digestion, chronic inflammation, nutrient depletion, or hormone metabolism that is no longer keeping pace with the demands being placed on the body.

Those patterns matter. Not because they mean something is “wrong” with you, but because they give us clues about what your body has been adapting to, and where you may be headed.

One of the biggest shifts in my own practice over the last decade has been realizing that symptoms rarely exist in isolation. A woman doesn’t come to me with “just” PMS. She doesn’t have “just” Hashimoto’s, “just” constipation, “just” infertility, or “just” fatigue. The body doesn’t organize itself into neat little boxes the way medicine often does.

Instead, everything is talking to everything else.

Your thyroid influences your metabolism. Your metabolism influences your nervous system. Your nervous system affects digestion. Digestion influences nutrient absorption, which shapes the health of your microbiome, which helps regulate immune function, estrogen metabolism, inflammation, and even neurotransmitter production. Every system is in conversation with the others, and when we begin looking through that lens, the picture often starts making a lot more sense.

This is one of the reasons I love functional lab testing so much. Not because I think lab tests heal people.

They don’t.

A lab test is simply another way of listening, a deeper inquiry.

It gives us information that isn’t always obvious through symptoms alone. It helps us identify patterns, prioritize where to begin, and understand what your body may be asking for. But the test itself isn’t the healing.

This distinction feels incredibly important because I think functional medicine has, in some ways, fallen into the same trap as conventional medicine. Instead of believing the answer is in a prescription, many people now believe the answer is in the next lab test, the next supplement protocol, or the next practitioner.

I’ve certainly been there myself. I know what it’s feels like to believe that the next piece of information is finally going to be the thing that changes everything.

Sometimes more information is incredibly helpful. Sometimes it’s exactly what we need. But information without implementation doesn’t change physiology.

What changes physiology is consistently giving your body the resources it has been asking for.

That might look like eating enough protein every day instead of skipping meals. It might mean supporting your circadian rhythm by watching the sunrise before checking your phone. It could mean learning how to stabilize blood sugar, prioritizing mineral-rich foods, taking a walk after dinner, getting into bed before you’re completely exhausted, or finding small moments throughout your day where your nervous system remembers what safety feels like.

None of these things are particularly glamorous. None of them are likely to go viral on Instagram. But they are often the things that change the way we feel each and every day.

One of the most common things I discuss to my clients is that we don’t heal because we found the “right” protocol. We heal because we create an internal environment where the body finally has enough nourishment, enough safety, and enough capacity to do what it has been trying to do all along.

This is why I don’t begin by asking, “Which test should we order?” I begin by asking a different question.

What story is your body trying to tell us?

Once we understand that story, choosing the right lab becomes much easier.

The Functional Tests I Reach for Most Often (And Why)

One of the biggest misconceptions about functional medicine is that every woman needs every test. She doesn’t.

One of the most important parts of my job is deciding what not to test just as much as deciding what to investigate further. Every woman walks into my practice with a different history, different symptoms, different goals, and perhaps most importantly, a different capacity. A woman preparing for pregnancy is going to need a different level of investigation than someone navigating perimenopause. A woman with chronic digestive symptoms may benefit from a completely different approach than someone whose primary concern is fatigue or recurrent miscarriages.

This is where working with an experienced practitioner, who is really invested in figuring you out specifically, really matters.

The goal isn’t to collect as much data as possible. The goal is to gather enough meaningful information that we can begin understanding why your body is expressing the symptoms it is and where your physiology is asking for support.

Over the years, there are a handful of tests that I continue coming back to because they consistently help me connect dots that conventional testing often misses. They’re not a magic fix, and they certainly aren’t the healing in and of themselves, but they provide another layer of information that helps us create a more individualized and thoughtful plan.

If you’ve spent any time online over the last year, you’ve probably noticed that the nutrition conversation has become almost entirely centered around protein. Women are being encouraged to eat 100 grams a day, prioritize protein at every meal, and build their plates around muscle, metabolism, and blood sugar.

Don’t misunderstand me—I wholeheartedly agree with this shift, and it’s something I’m talking about with my clients every single day. For decades, women were taught to fear food, eat tiny salads, and avoid nourishing themselves adequately. We were encouraged to count calories instead of nutrients, and many women have spent years unintentionally under-eating protein. From a hormone, fertility, and metabolic perspective, increasing protein intake has been one of the most positive changes I’ve seen in the nutrition space.

Most of the women I work with genuinely feel better when they begin eating enough high-quality protein. Their blood sugar becomes more stable, they stay full longer, build muscle more easily, have steadier energy throughout the day, and often notice improvements in cravings and overall resilience. Protein deserves the attention it’s receiving.

But over the past year or so, I’ve also noticed something interesting. Many of my clients are doing an incredible job meeting their protein goals, yet they’re still struggling with constipation, bloating, breast tenderness, painful periods, estrogen dominance, acne, sluggish metabolism, and GI-MAPs that consistently show low microbial diversity and an undernourished microbiome. It has made me wonder if, in our excitement about protein, we’ve stopped talking about another nutrient that is just as foundational to women’s health.

There are certain moments in life that deepen your work. Moments that reaffirm your path, expand your perspective, and continue to shape the way you move through the world.

For me, one of those moments happened just a few weeks ago after the Spirit Weavers Gathering, when I had the opportunity to assist & intern with my teacher, DeAnna Batdorff, during a two-day Pelvic Floor Clinic. Although I’ve been studying and practicing womb and abdominal work for years, those two days rekindled something in me.

They reminded me why I fell in love with this work in the first place and reaffirmed my trust in the wisdom of my own hands.

Working alongside DeAnna and a room full of skilled practitioners reminded me just how central the belly and pelvis are to a woman's overall health. So much of our attention in women's health is placed on hormones alone, yet beneath our hands we can often feel the effects of stress, birth, trauma, surgery, inflammation, and years of simply holding ourselves together.

The tissues of the abdomen and pelvis are deeply connected to our nervous system, our breath, our posture, our digestion, our reproductive organs, and the way we move through the world. Spending those two days immersed in this work reignited my passion for supporting women through this lens and reaffirmed my desire to continue weaving these skills into both my clinical practice and my teaching.

Following the Body’s Connections

For years, my work has centered around lymphatic breast health. As a midwife, lymphatic breast specialist and women’s health practitioner, I’ve spent countless hours exploring the anatomy of the breast, the physiology of the lymphatic system, and the ways stress, inflammation, hormones, and our environment become reflected in our tissues.

The more I continue to learn about the breasts, the more I find myself returning to the pelvis as well.

Because the body never works in isolated parts.

Lymphatic vessels don’t stop at the breast. Fascia doesn’t recognize the boundaries we draw in anatomy textbooks. Hormones don’t influence one organ while ignoring another.

Everything is in conversation.

The breasts, diaphragm, abdomen, uterus, pelvic floor, bladder, bowels, and lymphatic system exist as one integrated network, constantly communicating through fluid movement, pressure, breath, connective tissue, and the common thread of the nervous system.

When we begin to understand those relationships, our assessment becomes more complete and our hands become more discerning.

If you’re working on your hormones, your cycle, or your fertility, chances are iron has come up at some point.

Maybe you’ve been told you’re low. Maybe you’ve been supplementing. Maybe your labs look “fine,” but your body is telling you something different.

The truth is, iron is rarely as simple as it’s made out to be and most women are missing key pieces when it comes to understanding how it’s impacting their health and fertility.

Iron is one of the most commonly tested nutrients and one of the most misunderstood.

In fact, iron deficiency is incredibly common in women. Estimates suggest that 35–58% of young, healthy women may be deficient. That’s a huge number, and it matters, especially for hormone balance, fertility, and pregnancy.

At the same time, I see just as many women being told to take iron without a full understanding of what’s actually happening in their body.

This is where nuance is important. Because iron is not a standalone nutrient. It’s part of a much larger system involving your minerals, your metabolism, your liver, your immune system, and your hormones.

✺ Why Iron Matters for Women

Iron is a foundational mineral in the body, essential for oxygen transport, energy production, thyroid function, hormone synthesis, and cognitive health just to name a few.

Around 70% of the body’s iron is found in hemoglobin, which is why imbalances can show up as fatigue, brain fog, cold intolerance, hair loss, or irregular cycles.

Women are especially vulnerable due to:

• Menstruation (especially heavy cycles)

• Pregnancy and postpartum

• Higher nutrient demands

• Gut issues impacting absorption of minerals

Iron needs also increase significantly during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimester as blood volume expands.

But here’s the thing we are not being told: Iron is not just about how much you have. It’s about how well your body is using it.

✺ Why So Many Women Feel Confused About Iron

Many women are diagnosed or ruled out for anemia based on limited labs—often just looking at hemoglobin levels.

But hemoglobin alone is not sensitive enough to detect early or functional deficiency. Ferritin helps, but even that doesn’t tell the full story.

This is why so many women feel stuck:

• Labs look “normal,” but symptoms persist

• Or labs are “low,” but supplementation and increasing iron in the diet doesn’t help

• Or iron supplements make them feel worse, which is so frustrating!

This is because the issue isn’t always iron itself.

Stay connected to your circadian rhythm

When you travel or your schedule shifts, the very first thing your body loses is its rhythm, the internal clock that regulates cortisol, digestion, hormones, inflammation, sleep, and emotional resilience.

The simplest way to anchor yourself?

• Morning sunlight. Within 30–60 minutes of waking. Even if it’s cloudy. Bonus for putting your bare feet on the earth.

• Keep lights dim in the evening. Candles are a vibe.

• Turn off screens 1 hour before bed.

• Wear blue-blocking glasses after sunset if you’re indoors.

• Choose natural light whenever possible.

Your circadian rhythm is your body’s primary stabilizer including blood sugar, sleep, digestion, and mood.

Most women who come into my world have already tried so many things for their hormones.
Seed cycling. Supplements. Liver detox teas. Low-tox swaps. Fasting windows. Gluten-free months. Castor oil packs. DIM. Vitex. Myo-inositol. Progesterone creams. “Balancing” tinctures they saw on Instagram. Eliminating foods. Adding foods. Detoxing. Resetting. Biohacking.

Some of it helps for a moment.
Some of it does nothing.
And some of it makes things worse.

But almost all of these strategies miss one of the most essential systems in the entire female body: the lymphatic system.

This is one of the biggest gaps in women’s hormone education today, in my humble opinion.

We are taught that hormones behave like isolated messengers, that if we support estrogen or progesterone directly, the body will adapt. But hormones don’t operate in isolation. They rely on the terrain they move through. They depend on the systems that carry them, clear them, recycle them, and release them.

And the lymphatic system is the riverbed they’re traveling in.

When the lymph becomes congested or stagnant — which is incredibly common in our modern life, hormones simply can’t do their job. Estrogen begins to recirculate instead of exiting. Progesterone struggles to stay resilient and in range. PMS worsens. Bloating becomes constant. Breast tissue becomes dense or tender. Cycles shift. Emotions feel heavier, and harder to move through. The brain becomes foggier.

This isn’t hormonal mystery.
This is your lymphatic system communicating in symptoms.

What frustrates me most is that so many hormone-healing programs, even in the more functional and integrative space completely overlook this.

They emphasize supplements, liver cleanses, elimination diets, bioidentical hormones, or detox kits — but skip over the foundational physiology of detoxification itself.

Detox isn’t a 7-day cleanse, an herbal tea or a fast. Detox is a biological process that depends on raw materials: minerals, amino acids, lymphatic flow, bile movement, stable blood sugar, and a regulated nervous system.

Your body isn’t struggling because you haven’t “detoxed hard enough.”
It’s struggling because it doesn’t have what it needs to detox at all.

In truth, detox requires nourishment, not deprivation. Magnesium and potassium to open channels. Copper and selenium to run enzymes. Protein to build the structures that break down hormones. Hydration that actually hydrates. Blood sugar stability so the liver isn’t constantly stressed. And, most importantly, a lymphatic system that is able to move waste instead of holding it.

Without these pieces, hormones can’t balance no matter how many supplements you take.

Your Body’s Real Detox Pathways

Your body has a sophisticated detoxification system that is far more intelligent than anything sold in a bottle. The liver and kidneys filter, transform, and package waste so it can safely leave the body. The colon carries out the final stage of elimination and plays a huge role in clearing excess hormones so they don’t get reabsorbed. The skin acts as a secondary detox organ, releasing what the liver and kidneys can’t keep up with — which is why breakouts, rashes, and inflammation often show up when detox pathways are overwhelmed. These systems work all day, every day, without needing extreme cleanses or punishing protocols.

What actually powers these detox pathways? What allows them to break down hormones, clear inflammation, move waste, and protect you are minerals and lymph.

Minerals are the biochemical raw materials your liver enzymes rely on, the cofactors your kidneys require for filtration, the foundation of bile production, the drivers of colon motility, and the regulators of your nervous system.

And your lymphatic system is what moves cellular waste, excess hormones, immune debris, and toxins toward the organs that can eliminate them. When minerals are depleted or lymph is stagnant, detox slows. Hormones recirculate. Inflammation rises. You feel puffy, tired, moody, overwhelmed.

But when minerals are replenished and lymph begins to move, the whole system wakes up. Hormones regulate. Energy returns. Your body comes back alive, not because you forced it, but because you finally supported what it actually needed.

Hormones Do Not Heal in Isolation

So many women feel like they’ve “tried everything” because the thing they needed most was never addressed. Their lymph wasn’t moving. Their minerals were depleted. Their detox pathways were backed up. Their nervous systems were overwhelmed. Their bodies weren’t ready for the protocols being layered on top of it.

Hormone healing starts long before hormones.
It starts with the pathways that carry them, the minerals that build them, and the lymph that clears them.

When you support your lymph, when you hydrate, nourish your minerals, stabilize your blood sugar, breathe deeper into your diaphragm, soften your tissues and support your drainage pathways — your hormones finally have room to shift. They’re no longer trapped in a congested system. They’re no longer recirculating. They’re no longer compensating for everything else that isn’t working.

When your lymph flows, your hormones regulate.
When your minerals rise, your cycles stabilize.
When your pathways open, your energy returns.

This is the work most women never receive, even though it should be foundational.
This is the work that creates real change.
And this is the work I want more women to have access to.

Begin with the foundations that reconnect you to your physiology.

When we learn our bodies from the inside out we begin to reclaim our body literacy, a knowing that brings us back into relationship with our own aliveness. A groundedness that expands our capacity, our energy, our clarity, our sense of self. The path home is simpler than we are led to believe available to all of us.

Lately, I’ve been moving through a deep initiation around boundaries and worth — one that I think many women, particularly within the healing arts can relate to.

As practitioners, caretakers, and women in general honestly, we spend so much time reminding others to rest, to receive, to slow down — to honor the needs of the body and the seasons of life. And yet, how often do we forget to give ourselves the same permission? Overriding our deeper intuitions.

For more than a decade, I’ve poured my heart, time, and energy into creating offerings that make my work, the work of knowing and caring for our bodies as women accessible.

I’ve believed, and still believe, that this kind of education should never be gate-kept. But what I’m learning is that accessibility and self-sacrifice are not the same thing.

There’s a deep-seated story that has been slowly unraveling inside me — one that, honestly, I didn’t bring full awareness to for a long time. A remembering that my worth is not measured by how much I give away, how flexible I can be, how many women I can hold at once, or how low I can keep my prices.

For years, I have equated generosity with love, accessibility with integrity, and self-sacrifice with purpose (Maybe it’s my 3/5 profile Martyr Heretic Human design profile??) But beneath that was a more subtle belief, that my value depended on how much I could stretch, hold, and offer.

It’s taken me a long time to realize that overextension isn’t devotion. It’s depletion. And that real service comes from women who are resourced, clear, and well.

So I’m learning to move differently. To honor my own needs and boundaries. To let my work evolve in ways that feel reciprocal rather than extractive.

Because this is the work too — the work of remembering our enoughness, of unhooking our worth from productivity or price, and coming home to the power that lives in our boundaries, in our bodies, and in our choice to stay whole.

Worth is not a number. It’s a frequency.
It’s held within the integrity of how we show up.
It’s the energy exchange that allows us to give fully, without depletion, or resentment.

And if I’m honest, I haven’t always practiced what I teach in those regards.
I’ve taught about nervous system regulation while running on coffee.
I’ve spoken about nourishment while skipping meals — getting sucked into my computer to finish client protocols or class materials.
I’ve told women to honor their cycles while ignoring my own body’s cues for rest, and overextending.

So I’m in the process of making changes. I want my own energetic hygiene and self care to be in alignment as much as possible — so that my life can flow in a way that feels sustainable and supportive. Energetically and financially.

I’m calling my energy back. Finding the leaks.
I’m choosing smaller, more intimate containers — places where I can give deeply, without scattering my attention thinly across too many spaces.
I’m raising my prices, not because I don’t care about accessibility, but because I’m honoring the real value of this work and the energy it takes to hold it well.

And I’m reminding myself and you — that we can believe in accessibility while also believing in sustainability.
We can hold the vision of a world where women have access to healing and where healers are nourished enough to keep serving.

To me, that is the essence of feminine leadership, learning to create from fullness, not depletion.

I’m not going to lie, this one has been hard for me.
I’ve been sitting with so much guilt. With imposter syndrome, at times. With a deep self-inquiry into where this question of worthiness even began — where in the story arc of my life I first learned that my value was something to prove, not something inherent within myself.

Lately I’ve been spending more time in my body — really feeling into my nervous system capacity and asking what actually feels good to offer. What feels aligned. What feels energetically expensive. Where I can consolidate, refine, or let go.

As I’ve been navigating this transition, I’ve also been dreaming into new ways to meet women where they are — smaller, pre-recorded offerings that stay accessible for those who aren’t ready for deeper 1:1 work. Because I’m learning that accessibility doesn’t have to mean overextending ourselves; it can mean creating different doorways in.

This is what practicing what we preach looks like. It’s a process. It’s not perfect. It’s uncomfortable — and it’s honest, at least I want it to be.

I felt it was important to share this piece that I have been sitting with, because maybe some of you are sitting with the same thing — that tension between service and sustainability, between heart and boundary, between the calling to give and the need to be held.

The truth is, our gifts were never meant to be commodified. And yet, here we are, trying to root our sacred work inside a capitalistic system. What we need now are women who are grounded in themselves, who are clear on their medicine, and who can fully show up for it.

We need women with heart, with grit, with softness and tears. Women who aren’t afraid to be seen as they are — raw, radiant, imperfect, whole.
Women who are learning to live in right relationship with the energy they give and the energy they receive in return.

If you’re in this same place of learning to ask for what you’re worth, to say no when your energy says no, to let your business evolve with your body, not the other way around— know that you’re not alone, and that this is quite possibly one of the most important aspects of aligning your life — and that we can come back to it again and again, as our internal and external seasons change.

Self-Inquiry Reflections

• Where do I still equate my value with how much I give or do for others?

• In what ways do I overextend myself in the name of care, service, or love?

• What parts of me feel uncomfortable receiving — money, attention, help, rest, pleasure?

• What sensations arise in my body when I begin to ask for more?

• When I think of raising my prices or setting boundaries, what story or fear surfaces?

• What does enoughness feel like in my body? How do I know when I’ve crossed it?

• How do I know when my giving is from overflow versus depletion?

• What would it look like to be in true reciprocity with my work — to give and receive in balance?

• How does my nervous system respond to rest, spaciousness, or slowing down?

• What am I afraid will happen if I stop overgiving?

• What does sustainability — energetic, emotional, financial — truly mean to me?

• What would change if I trusted that my worth is inherent, not earned?

What if I told you that the food you eat today won’t fully reach your womb, your breasts, or your affect your egg quality until almost a month from now?

From the lens of Ayurveda the body is seen as a living ecosystem that is constantly regenerating itself through layers of nourishment. Food doesn’t just “digest” and get absorbed, it moves through a cascade of tissues, each one feeding the next, slowly building the foundation of your health, particularly as a woman.

This is the concept of the dhatus, the seven tissues of the body. And while you may not be familiar with the Sanskrit language in its antiquity, the etymology reveals something incredibly relevant for us as women today: when we nourish deeply, consistently, and with foods that carry vitality, our tissues thrive— and with them, our hormones, our cycles, our breast health, our fertility, and our sense of vitality.

The origin of the word “dhatu” stands for “root building block.” Its literal translation is “that which holds,” relating to our body's collection of cells which maintain the potential to nourish, support, and protect our bodies.

When we eat, we aren’t just filling our stomachs –
we are feeding this intricate & intelligent cascade of tissues.

The Cascade of Nourishment

When you eat, the first layer that receives nutrition is your fluids and plasma- what Ayurveda calls rasa. Think of it as your lymphatic flow, hydration, and the foundational layer of your vitality.

First the lymph & plasma are nourished, which feeds into the blood, which then feeds the muscle, feeding the fat, which builds bone &marrow, and finally nourishes the reproductive tissues.

Each layer takes what it needs from the one before it, creating a cascade of nourishment that ultimately expresses itself as our energy, our vitality, our immunity, and our ability to regenerate — our fertility. If one layer is depleted, everything downstream feels the impact.

Here’s the part I find facinating: each tissue takes about five days to be fully nourished. That means it takes a full month for your reproductive tissues; your eggs, your womb, your breasts — to fully receive what you’re eating today. This is why consistent, gentle nourishment is so important and foundational for our health and vitality as women.

Fertility as a Symbol of Health

We tend to think of fertility only in terms of whether we want to get pregnant or not. But fertility is much more nuanced than just our ability to conceive. It’s quite possible the most important symbol of health as a menstruating woman. It tells us how well our body is nourished, how smoothly & efficiently our hormones are flowing, how resilient our cycles are, and how much reserve we have for creativity and life itself.

Fertility is synonymous with aliveness.

• Regular ovulation and cycles reflect strong nourishment of the tissues; healthy dhatus.

Breasts, Womb & Postpartum: Reflections of Our Tissue Nourishment

As women, our breasts and womb give us very tangible feedback about the state of our tissues, and thus the state of our overall health.

Our breasts are rich in plasma and lymph, the fluids that carry our vitality, our immune defenses, and our hormonal balance. When we’re deeply nourished, breast tissue is supple, lymph flows easily, and milk supply postpartum can be abundant and steady. When our tissues are depleted, breasts can feel congested, painful, or prone to engorgement and clogged ducts or deeper dis-ease.

Our wombs reflect this, too. Heavy or painful periods, missed ovulation, or
“ unexplained infertility” often point back to how well, or how poorly the tissues have been fed, or if there is room for improvement.

And in postpartum, when the body has given so much to grow and birth our babies, the importance in rebuilding the tissues is greater than ever, for the health of both mama and baby. Broths, healthy fats, and mineral-rich teas aren’t just “nice” — they are the absolute essentials for recovery, milk production, hormone recalibration, nervous system regulation & emotional stability.

Food as Essence, Not Just Nutrients

One of the things I love about this Ayurvedic perspective is that it pulls us out the masculine & linear mindset we often use to look at nutrition statistics. In the Western world, we’re often told to measure macros, grams, or calories. And while those details can and do have value, they miss an important truth: all of our food has an essence.

• A mineral-rich broth doesn’t just give you calcium and magnesium, it restores warmth and flow in your tissues, it feeds your soul.

• A spoonful of tahini doesn’t only provide healthy fats, it strengthens bones, teeth, and hair, and provides safety.

• A ripe mango doesn’t just contain vitamins, it hydrates, uplifts, and cools your body in the summer heat.

When we can begin to consider our food in this way, it stops being about control and starts being about care. A softer, more feminine perspective.

Instead of harsh cleanses, intense detox protocols or fasts, the Ayurvedic perspective reminds us that detox is subtle, daily, and body-led. So what does this look like in terms of daily nourishment?

Somatic Reflections on Nourishment

• Pause + Notice: Before your next meal ask yourself: What kind of nourishment do I actually need right now — physical, emotional, or energetic?

• Texture of Nourishment: As you eat, notice the qualities of your food— is it warm, grounding, hydrating, energizing? How do those qualities mirror or oppose what your body is craving today?

• Listening to the Tissues: After eating, take a moment and tune into your body. Where do you feel the impact of this meal first — your energy, your mood, your digestion, your breath?

• Layers of Self: Reflect on this chain of nourishment: How might the way you feed yourself today ripple into your blood, skin, breasts, womb, and cycles— weeks from now?

• Pleasure + Permission: Ask yourself: Am I allowing myself to eat in a way that feels both nourishing and pleasurable? What would it feel like to trust that pleasure itself is part of nourishment?

• Ongoing Dialogue: What would it mean to feed yourself like someone you deeply love?

I recently stumbled across a video Vogue posted while I was deep in an internet rabbit hole, searching endlessly for fresh, holistic, and genuinely empowering takes on self-breast checks. (Spoiler alert — there isn’t much out there folks!)

And I’ve gotta say — I love it.

It’s cheeky, playful, and refreshingly unapologetic about the fact that yes, we should be touching our tits. Not from a place of fear or medical necessity, but from curiosity, connection, and care.

In a world where most breast-health content feels sterile, clinical, or flat-out intimidating, this little gem manages to make self-checks feel like an act of self-love — and that’s exactly the vibe I teach and want more women to have when they meet their own bodies in the mirror.

Let’s talk about the two things most of us learned to either hide, judge, or worry about: our tits.

Whether you call them breasts, boobs, titties or chi chi’s— they’ve likely been the subject of attention, opinions, and maybe even shame since you were young.

But here’s the truth: they’re yours. They’ve always been yours. And learning to touch them, know them, and love them is not just okay — it’s vital for true, embodied health.

That’s why I think this video is exactly the kind of energy we need more of, and why I have centered so much of my work around breast care. Because touching your breasts shouldn’t just in foreplay, bathing, or while breastfeeding.

It should be part of your daily relationship with your body — a conversation you have with yourself in the mirror, in the shower, or quite frankly any time you feel like it.

Breast massage isn’t only about checking for changes. It’s about moving lymph, circulating blood, softening fascia, and, yes, moving emotion. It’s about telling our nervous system, you’re safe. That familiar, intentional touch sends signals to the brain that soften tension, slow our breath, and bring us back into our bodies — where we belong. We need these grounding rituals now more than ever.

Our breasts sit right over our heart charka — and they store stories, tenderness, eros and sometimes grief & rage. Gentle, loving and playful touch can help release old energy, bring in fresh vitality, and reconnect you to yourself and your womb. It can also just feel really good.
Imagine that — pleasure as medicine.

And let’s drop the bullshit that only “perfect” breasts deserve love and praise. Big, small, perky, pendulous, scarred, lactating, lopsided, even post surgical removal — they all deserve adoration. I have literally seen, touched and massaged hundreds of breasts over the past decade of this work, and I can tell you without a doubt each and every one was unique, and beautiful —because breasts are literally amazing!! They give life.

Every curve, every stretch mark, every freckle is part of your living, breathing body’s story. Touching your titties is about owning that story — refusing to let shame or fear keep you from knowing yourself. This kind of knowing is what restores our autonomy and strengthens our voice in the health care space. It’s what puts the power back in our hands, gifting us the time, clarity, and confidence to decide exactly how we want to care for our bodies, no matter what we’re facing.

Prevention is always the best medicine — and when it comes to breast health, that means catching changes as early as possible. One research article I read points out that tumors found by women themselves during regular self-exams are typically half the size of those discovered by doctors. That matters, because smaller tumors are almost always more treatable and come with better outcomes. When we know our breasts intimately, we give ourselves the chance to notice something long before it becomes a bigger problem — and that’s the kind of power and agency I want all women everywhere to have.

But this isn’t just about us.
It’s about the next generation of girls growing up in a world where TikTok filters can change your face in seconds, where “preventative” Botox is marketed to twenty-year-olds, and where plastic surgery is pitched as self-care. They are swimming in images of bodies that don’t actually exist, being told that their worth depends on matching an ever-shifting, impossible beauty standard.

If we want them to grow up rooted in their bodies, we have to model that to them now. We have to show them that knowing and loving your body isn’t about how it looks — it’s about how it feels to live in it.

We have to normalize touching our breasts not just to check for something “wrong”, but to connect with pleasure, curiosity and gratitude. We have to pass down the truth that your body, in its unique, evolving, perfectly imperfect form, is worthy of care and celebration — always.

Touching our breasts is also about reclaiming a birthright that has been stripped away by cultural conditioning: the right feel good in our own skin without apology. The right to feel, to take up space, to be curious about our bodies without shame.

So yes — watch the video, then go have a moment with your own. Be playful. Be curious. Have fun.

And remember: this is not just about your breasts. It’s about being fully in your body, fully in your power, and fully in love with the life pulsing through you. And when we live that way, we don’t just heal ourselves — we change the story for every girl who feels and witnesses our own embodiment.

Your nutrient needs don’t drop off after birth — they actually increase.
Most mamas I work with are surprised to hear that the protein and mineral needs postpartum are even higher than during pregnancy. That 100 grams of protein you worked so hard to hit while pregnant?

You might need even more while breastfeeding.

As Lily Nichols shares in Real Food for Pregnancy, early postpartum nutrient demands can exceed those of pregnancy due to the simultaneous load of breastfeeding, tissue repair, and nutrient depletion. You’re not just nourishing your baby — you’re also rebuilding your own body, mind and spirit.

That’s why what you eat during pregnancy matters so much for how you’ll feel postpartum. Think of it as building your reserves before the marathon of early motherhood begins.

Understanding Macros & Pregnancy

While many women are told to “bounce back” after birth, the truth is your body actually needs more — more nutrients, more calories, more support, and as much rest as possible in the postpartum period. Not less.

This is especially true if you’re breastfeeding, recovering from birth, or running on little sleep and high cortisol (which, let’s be real, is the reality for most new mothers — even with support in place). The adjustment to life with a newborn, coupled with disrupted sleep and a completely new rhythm, creates a state of physiological stress. And your body needs to be fed, not depleted, in order to recover and thrive.

According to Lily Nichols, postpartum women — particularly those who are breastfeeding — require an additional 450–500 calories per day above baseline to support milk production. That’s at minimum — and doesn’t account for sleep loss, stress, or physical healing, which all increase energy demands.

But not all calories are created equal. This is where macro- and micronutrient density becomes essential.

Macronutrients: What Postpartum Bodies Actually Need

Protein

• Needs: ~100g/day minimum (often more!)

• Why it matters: Essential for tissue repair, hormone balance, milk production, and blood sugar stability.

• Whole food sources: Pasture-raised eggs, slow-cooked meats, bone broth/ meat stock, collagen, legumes, fish, and raw dairy (if tolerated).

Fat

• Needs: Healthy fats should make up 30–40% of total calories postpartum.

• Why it matters: Fats are critical for hormone production, brain health, and the rich fat content of breastmilk.

• Whole food sources: Grass-fed butter, ghee, coconut oil, avocado, egg yolks, fatty fish (like salmon and sardines), and nuts/seeds.

Carbohydrates

• Needs: Moderate, complex carbs to replenish energy and support thyroid function. Most women need around 150-175 grams per day.

• Why it matters: Carbs help regulate cortisol, serotonin, and support milk supply and thyroid recovery (which often tanks postpartum).

• Whole food sources: Root veggies, soaked grains, squash, fruit, and well-prepared legumes.

Integrative Perspective

In integrative women’s health, we don’t just count calories — we ask how well are your cells being fed?
Postpartum depletion is one of the most overlooked crises in women’s health. Many women enter postpartum already mineral-depleted from pregnancy, and then continue to give everything to their babies without restoring their own reserves.

We focus on:

• Rebuilding nutrient stores (especially iron, zinc, magnesium, and B vitamins)

• Supporting the nervous system (through blood sugar balance + adaptogens)

I always knew I’d move to Mexico..

Well, maybe not always, but for almost my entire adult life.

I came to Mexico on a soul-searching journey when I was 23, just a few months after my mother passed away. I had been living in a fog—disconnected, disoriented, unable to relate to the people and things around me. The world felt too loud, too fast, and too shallow for the grief I was holding. My friends were trying to live their best 20-something lives in Portland, but I couldn’t keep up. I didn’t want to. My world had cracked open, and I knew I needed something different. I needed to live again. I needed to feel. To find joy. To figure out who I was now.

Grief has a way of waking you up to what matters. Watching my mother die at just 48—depressed, disconnected, and without real purpose—broke my heart open in ways I’m still unraveling. Even now, 15 years later, as I write this, the tears stain my cheeks and my throat burns. You never fully recover from losing your mother..

So I took off—down to Mexico (we had gone often growing up, my mama LOVED it there). I quit my shitty restaurant job and with no clear plan, no real money, and no idea what I was looking for. Just a knowing that I needed to go.

What I found was beyond anything I could have hoped for.

I found vibrancy. I found warmth. I found people with sparkle in their eyes and laughter in their bellies. I found spices and color, music and medicine, and a beautiful culture that still lives close to the earth. A place where plants still speak and people still listen.

Eventually I landed in Oaxaca, traveling solo but never alone. I was welcomed into homes, fed delicious food (so much delicious food), and shown the healing ways of a land and a people who still remember. I laughed more in that month than I had in years. The kind of laughter that makes your belly hurt and fills your soul. That month cracked something open in me. I felt alive. I felt at home, like really at home—maybe for the first time in my life.

Even as a güera with my high school level Spanish - I felt a feeling of belonging, to something deeper, honestly it’s hard to explain — even now.

When I returned to the States, I knew I couldn’t go back to who I was before. So I moved into the woods of Southern Oregon, enrolled in herbalism school, and let the plants guide me — the ones who had spoken to me in the mountains of Mexico. I began building a life of purpose and followed my threads of healing: studying, growing food and medicine — finding joy in living again.

Many years later, on the shores of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala around my 28th birthday, right in the middle of my Saturn return, I found myself in a traditional Mayan fire ceremony with a man named Pablo, studying medicinal plants and making offerings to the spirits of the land for our medicines when he explained to me that the fire had told him something and he asked me if it was ok to share it with me.

It went something like this —

“your soul is very old, and you have always worked with the plants, they know you well, they recognize you. In this life you will travel around the world with your studies, searching for knowledge, you will become a midwife and you will help to bring in this next generation, you will have important things to share so you must follow this path, and not get distracted, its important that you remember this — oh and there is an abuilita living in your soul, she will guide you.”

That whole story is a story for another time, which I promise I will share with you here…

But in that moment I understood why I kept finding myself called back to Mexico, year after year, and why my soul felt so at home.

So fast forward almost 15 years. I've spent the last decade and a half walking my healing path and building a life that feels deeply aligned with my dreams. I was determined to do it differently than my mama. I studied herbalism, permaculture, Ayurveda, and Integrative Women’s Health. I became a doula, and then began apprenticing to be a midwife. (I didn’t forget, and I didn’t get distracted.) I lived on the land in the woods, tended gardens, grew food and medicine, made herbal remedies, and slowly grew what is now Mana Medicinals, my little soul business.

Life was good. I loved my work, I had a solid community, and I had spent nearly 15 years rooted in Southern Oregon. I was well-connected, respected, and doing the work I had dreamed of.

But something still felt off. Like a piece of the puzzle was missing. There was a part of me that felt restless, a knowing deep in my bones that something didn’t quite fit anymore. I was longing for something slower. Wilder. More embodied. More alive. More colorful. More free.

Mexico.

That same land that had held me all those years ago when I was lost in grief. The land that softened me, inspired me, and helped me begin to remember who I was. The whisper I had heard in Oaxaca never really left me—it just got louder.

It was time to go home.

And slowly, that whisper became a plan.

I had been traveling to Mexico every winter since my 20’s, exploring different places, trying to figure out where I wanted to live, where I wanted to land, root down and build my dream.

I think creator always knew where I would end up, and as it would happen my partner at the time brought me back to Oaxaca, this time not to the mountains, but to the wild, beautiful & intense coast to a tiny town that stole my heart.

I felt it in my bones—this was it. I just had a deep knowing that this is where I was supposed to be.

So I did what I always do when I’m sitting with a big decision: I rolled a tobacco, walked down to the ocean, and sat with the land.
I prayed—for my life, my path, and for a sign. Something to show me I was on the right track. Something to confirm that this was where I was meant to build my next chapter.

And wouldn’t you know it? The very next morning, the piece of land I had fallen in love with—the one that felt like a full-body yes from the moment I stepped foot on it—suddenly became available. It hadn’t been for sale. But now, it was. And in a way that made it possible for me.

It was my sign. So I said yes.

It took a whole to figure out all of the details, but eventually I sold most of my belongings, quit my job, let go of the farm, packed up my truck and newly purchased trailer and my dogs of course, said goodbye to everything and everyone familiar, and moved to the wild coast of Oaxaca—

It wasn’t easy or convenient.
In fact it was hard, in every sense.
I left people I loved — my family. I walked away from the version of success I thought I had to hold onto. I had to convince everyone I wasn’t crazy for moving to a forign country by myself, and putting everything I had into it.

But I needed to find my path as a midwife outside of the pressing regulations of the sates
To live closer to the earth & the swim in the ocean every day, with salt on my skin
To build my home, plant my gardens and create my life somewhere where it was not only possible, but felt aligned.
To learn Spanish and live in a amidst a colorful & vibrant culture full of inspiration
To follow my heart, no matter the doubts I had, or fears.

To fully trust my heart — my intuition — my dream.

It hasn’t been easy—or perfect. I’ve cried more tears than I can count. I’ve moved through painful growth, stumbled over cultural differences, and mispronounced a million words. But through it all, I’ve discovered my own strength and resilience in ways I never could have imagined.

And slowly but surely, it’s becoming everything I hoped it would be.

I still have so far to go—but I’m living in my house, attending births here in Mexico (in Spanish!), working for myself, writing, seeing clients, and teaching. I’m planting fruit trees, tending a growing garden, learning to surf, swimming in the ocean every day, and building a life that follows the rhythm of the sun.

It’s the most joy, presence, and alignment I’ve ever felt.

I plan to write and share more on this part of my life and my journey living abroad as a series here on my Substack—not only to give you a glimpse into my world, but to inspire you to trust yourself and follow your dreams.

Because sometimes the road you need to take won’t be the easiest or most obvious—but the result? It might just become more beautiful than you ever imagined.

I’ve been thinking about breast care lately—how we’ve been taught to approach it, what we’ve internalized, and what’s been missing all along.

Most of us were never truly taught how to care for our breasts. We may have been told to “check for lumps” or to “get a mammogram at 40,” but few of us were shown how to feel our tissue with curiosity, or how to interpret what we’re feeling with clarity.

We weren’t taught that our breasts change throughout our cycle.
We weren’t taught that tenderness, swelling, or fluid retention can be connected to lymphatic stagnation or hormone imbalance.
We weren’t taught that daily self-touch could be an intelligent form of prevention—not just a reaction to fear.

Instead, we’ve been conditioned to believe that breast care is something clinical, cold, and often scary.
That it begins with anxiety, and ends in results we have no control over - or even understand.

But what if it didn’t have to be that way?

What If Breast Care Started With Knowing, Not Searching?

We’ve inherited a cultural mindset that trains us to be hypervigilant—taught to scan for problems, but rarely empowered to understand what’s normal for our body.
True body literacy, which is turn means body sovereignty

And here’s the cost of that:
We don’t trust what we feel.
We panic at every shift or lump.
We freeze, or ignore, or wait.

We wait for someone else to tell us what’s happening in our body, even though our body has been telling us all along.

This is the elephant in the room of modern women’s health: being disconnected from our own bodies while trying to stay “on top of it all.”

But that disconnection isn’t our fault—it’s systemic.
And it's fixable.

Why This Matters Now

The time to act is now—not only for treatment, but for prevention and deep embodied knowledge of how your body works.

In 2025, an estimated 316,950 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, alongside 59,080 cases of non‑invasive (DCIS) disease—and tragically, about 42,170 women will die from it. That means about 1 in 8 women are facing a diagnosis in her lifetime.

Let that sink in.

Yet there is hope: localized, early-stage breast cancer has a 99% five-year survival rate, meaning what you feel and when you feel it matters—deeply.

Prevention isn’t theoretical—it’s a necessary layer of defense in our modern world, alongside appropriate testing, but also daily somatic habits that support lymph flow, hormone balance, and tissue health.

Lymph, Hormones & the Landscape Beneath the Skin

Your breast tissue is alive. Responsive. Resilient.

What About Mammograms? What About Thermography?

This question comes up constantly in my work. And the truth is—there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

Mammograms can be helpful, but also carry risks of radiation and false positives, especially in younger women or those with dense breast tissue.
Thermography can show inflammatory patterns and lymph congestion, and are much more affordable, with less adverse side effects & no pain!

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about metabolism — not just in the clinical, physiological sense, but as a deeper metaphor for how we move through life.

In my 1:1 practice, I spend a lot of time analyzing gut health labs like GI Maps — looking at microbial balance, digestive resilience, and how well the body is absorbing and utilizing nutrients. What shows up again and again is that it's not just about what we take in. It's about what we can digest. What we can truly integrate.

But this goes beyond the body.
It got me contemplating the microcosm/macrocosm: how the internal mirrors the external.

And lately, I’ve been asking — how are we metabolizing what’s happening out there?

The pace. The grief. The systemic breakdowns. The noise. The scrolling. The overwhelm. The world feels like it’s asking more than most of us can give.

And just like a depleted gut can’t digest a nourishing meal, an overstimulated nervous system can’t metabolize even the most intentional life.

This is where the thread tugged me deeper —

What if the practices we build — daily walks, nourishing meals, lymphatic massage, a cup of tea, somatic journaling, herbal oiling — are like the beneficial bacteria in our inner ecosystem?

What if each supportive relationship, each rhythm that regulates us, each pause we honor, is another strain of resiliency added to our internal microbiome?

Because emotional metabolism is real.

We don’t just digest food. We digest sensation. Experience. Loss. Love. And without enough ritual, reflection, or connection, we store what we cannot process. It becomes tension. Exhaustion. Shutdown. Hormonal imbalance. Symptoms without names.

And here’s the part wellness culture often forgets: we can’t do this alone.

Healing in Community: The Ecosystem We Need

In the gut, balance comes from biodiversity. A robust microbiome doesn’t depend on one strain of bacteria — it thrives through many working together. Our emotional health is the same. We need others. We need connection. We need witnessing.

Healing in community doesn’t mean performing progress. It means metabolizing in relationship — having someone to hold space while your emotions unfold. Having language reflected back to you when your own is stuck. Having rhythm and ritual, not to perfect yourself, but to stay connected to what matters, to stay grounded.

This is the soil my work is planted in.

My courses and trainings aren’t just about herbalism, nourishment, breast massage or lymphatic flow. They are a container for rebuilding our inner terrain — together. A space to tend what’s stagnant. To process what’s heavy. To show up not with answers, but with willingness.

There was a time when breasts were seen as sacred terrain, as part of a woman’s compass — sensing, receiving, expressing, protecting.
Not just vessels for milk, but for wisdom.

And then came centuries of silencing.
Of patriarchy, of pathologization, of the clinical gaze.
We were told to cover them, flatten them, put them on display, flaunt them — but to ignore their signals.

We lost rituals of breast care.
We lost stories about breast wisdom.
We forgot how to listen — not just with our ears, but with our bodies.
The intuitive knowing alive in our breasts began to atrophy.

But something changes when we give birth.
We become initiated.
We move through a portal between worlds.
The veil thins.
The body cracks open, and so does the heart.

In the postpartum, the body doesn’t just gain the ability to feed a child —
it remembers itself.
Through breast tenderness, through leaking milk, through sudden waves of protectiveness or grief, of ego death, a portal opens.
The dormant intuition awakens again — visceral, felt, unshakable.
And with it, a knowing: the body has always been wise.
We were just taught to forget.

The Breasts Remember: The Intuitive Wisdom Within

Over time, many of us have learned to silence our bodies in order to survive. The breasts are one of the first places we dissociate from—either objectified, pathologized, or simply ignored - not acknowledged for their power, their potency.

But from an embryological perspective, the breasts and the heart arise from the same tissue. They are siblings in the body’s beautiful design. Both speak through sensation, rhythm, and emotion. When we stimulate and connect to our breast tissue—whether through breastfeeding, touch, lymphatic massage or tenderness—we also access the deeper emotional language of the heart.

There is science to this sensing. The heart—and the breast by extension—is an organ of perception. It doesn't just pump or feed. It feels. It intuits. It attunes.

Birth as Threshold, Breastfeeding as Awakening

There’s a threshold that opens during birth that cannot be accessed through logic. It’s hormonal. Primal. Mystical. In that moment—when the body is cracked open—something inside us reorients.

In postpartum, this thread continues. The hormonal shifts, the skin-to-skin contact, the pain, the pleasure—every sensation in the breasts is a reawakening. Of memory. Of vulnerability. Of fierce clarity.

Breastfeeding is not just an act of nourishment for the baby—it’s a rewiring of the mother. Each letdown, each fullness and ache, begins to reactivate the intuitive channels many of us have lost. We begin to sense things we can’t explain. Know things without proof. Feel truths in our chests before we can name them. We reconnect to that deep intuition that is essential in motherhood.

But you don’t have to be pregnant or have given birth to awaken this intuitive center. The reconnection begins the moment you place your hands on your own body — through gentle self-massage, through touch infused with presence, through grounding back into yourself.

This is the deeper medicine of lymphatic self-massage. It’s why I believe every woman deserves access to this practice — not just for physical health, but for remembrance. It’s a way home. A way to listen again. To trust what’s already inside you.

Because in a world growing louder, faster, more disconnected — this kind of embodied knowing isn’t just supportive, it’s essential.

A hidden superpower, waiting to be reclaimed.

The Science of Heart Perception

Stephen Harrod Buhner writes extensively on the heart as a center of perception—not metaphorically, but biologically. The heart has its own nervous system, its own memory, its own intelligence.

The heart is the largest generator and receiver of electromagnetic frequencies in the body; its field is 5000 times greater than that of the brain. This energetic field creates a toroidal field around the body and can be felt from over 10 feet away. In this way, the heart is in constant communication with the surrounding environment and its electromagnetic frequencies.

Because of our long habituation in the linear mind and the things we have been taught about the livingness of the world, this is the hardest thing of all – to give reality to the feelings that flow into us from the world itself.

As our bodies become more alive through the activation of our senses, feeling is what we do instead of thinking. Our consciousness begins to move out of the brain, and into the heart, leaving the analytical mind behind. The hidden face of nature can only truly be seen with the heart, and as we sit in stillness we enter into a state of receptivity.

This is what we are initiated into in the postpartum.

This “knowing” isn’t dramatic or loud. It’s subtle. Subterranean. Which is why we need stillness to hear it. And softness to trust it. The breasts help us access this quieter signal. When we tend to our breast tissue, we’re not just increasing circulation—we’re reconnecting to a deeper intelligence.

Breast Massage as Ritual of Return

This is where the practice comes in. Daily or weekly lymphatic breast massage is not just for physically supporting our health—it’s for reconnection.

Each stroke, each hand placed gently over the heart center is an invitation:
To feel.
To listen.
To remember.

The tissues begin to soften. Emotion rises. Sometimes, tears come. And beneath the tension or the numbness, there is clarity. A memory. An insight.

Breast massage helps move stagnant lymph, clear estrogenic byproducts, and support immune flow—yes. But it also clears the emotional debris we’ve held in our chests for years.

Through touch, we begin to reinhabit this part of our body.
Through attention, we reclaim it as sacred, not shameful.
Through rhythm, we restore its function as a channel of knowing.

And in a world that is constantly asking for our energy, our attention, our urgency — choosing to regulate, to slow down, to put the screens down, to nourish and restore — is one of the most powerful forms of resistance we have.

Minerals as Medicine & Nervous System Capacity

Minerals are the spark plugs of the body. They are responsible for enzyme function, cellular communication, and nervous system regulation. When we’re depleted — from stress, poor nutrition, trauma, or simply living in a chronically draining culture — the body begins to conserve. It shuts down non-essential functions. But when mineral reserves are supported and replenished the nervous system becomes more robust. Our capacity expands. We’re no longer operating from an empty well. We can process emotions more fully, regulate stress more effectively, and engage with the world without collapsing under its weight.

One of the most profound ways to calm the nervous system and come back into the body is through the ritual of herbal body oiling. This has hands down been the most effective form of medicine for my nervous system.

This is more than skincare, more than some instagram trend. It is true presence. It is a way to tell your body: I’m here. You’re safe. We’ve got this.

The practice of gently oiling your body head to toe — especially infused with nervine or protective herbs — grounds the mind, supports lymphatic flow, and creates a gentle rhythm that downshifts the entire nervous system. Touch becomes the therapy. The oil becomes the carrier of messages: softness, strength, sweetness.

This practice supports the lymphatic system by promoting gentle, rhythmic movement of lymph — encouraging detoxification, immune circulation, and tissue nourishment. When we support the flow of lymph, we are literally supporting the body’s ability to clear waste, reduce stagnation, and build inner clarity.
