I applied my research skills and Qualitative Intelligence Systems against the Anthony Fauci saga.

Part One: What Actually Happened?

On July 29, 2026, Anthony Fauci appeared under subpoena before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee as part of its investigation into the origins of COVID-19. Days earlier, Chairman Rand Paul had released more than a thousand pages of Fauci’s journal entries from his time leading the pandemic response. Fauci delivered a brief opening statement accusing Paul of an obsession with securing his prosecution, and then invoked his Fifth Amendment rights 111 times, refusing to answer a single question posed by the panel. The hearing ran roughly three hours. Fauci’s attorney, David Schertler, appeared alongside him at the start but was told to move to a seat behind him, and was later removed from the room after attempting to speak on his client’s behalf.

On August 6, 2026, the committee voted to hold him in contempt. The tally was 8-5 on party lines, with two additional “no” votes cast by proxy — which is why some outlets report 8-7. Democrats moved repeatedly to table or postpone and were blocked. Ranking Member Gary Peters argued the resolution would set a precedent future witnesses would use to resist legitimate oversight. Schertler called the vote a crude political stunt intended to punish his client for exercising constitutional rights.

The mechanics of the referral matter more than the vote. The resolution invokes 2 U.S.C. 192 and 194 and directs the President of the Senate to certify the committee’s report, detailing Fauci’s refusal to answer questions pertinent to the inquiry, to the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. That means Vice President Vance certifying to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro. Paul has said he intends to deliver the referral directly rather than wait for a floor vote, accompanied by a legal brief from committee Republicans on whether the Fifth Amendment applies to a pardoned witness.

That choice is deliberate. A full Senate vote would face the 60-vote threshold, requiring Democratic support in a chamber with 53 Republicans — support that is not coming.

The referral is not the end of the congressional track. A separate panel, the Senate Homeland Security Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations chaired by Ron Johnson, has obtained a copy of Fauci’s HHS-era iPhone, provided by the Department of Health and Human Services and first reported by the Wall Street Journal. Johnson said before the contempt vote that his investigation has “just begun,” and that the subcommittee has invited Fauci for a transcribed interview behind closed doors. Paul and Johnson have also received millions of additional Fauci-related pages from government servers.

Part Two: What the Pardon Does and Does Not Do

The clemency warrant grants Fauci a full and unconditional pardon for any offenses against the United States committed from January 1, 2014 through the date of the pardon, arising from or related to his service as NIAID Director, as a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force or COVID-19 Response Team, or as Chief Medical Advisor to the President. The warrant carries a January 19, 2025 dateline; the announcement ran the following morning, which is why much reporting says January 20. Fauci accepted it publicly, foreclosing any argument that it never took effect for want of acceptance.

Three limits define everything that follows.

It cannot reach forward. A president cannot pardon conduct that has not yet occurred. If Fauci committed a criminal contempt of Congress on July 29, 2026, no 2025 pardon touches it. This is not a close question, and it is the single fact that makes the entire contempt theory viable.

It cannot reach the states. The pardon power extends only to offenses against the United States. This is ordinarily an abstract limitation. It is not abstract here. Louisiana, Florida, and Alabama have announced plans to investigate Fauci on state charges following the July 29 testimony.

It cannot reach conduct outside its subject-matter scope. The pardon is tied to three specific roles. Anything unrelated to that service, whenever it occurred, is uncovered.

There is a fourth wrinkle, and it is the strangest feature of the case. The Trump administration has repeatedly questioned the validity of the Biden pardons given Biden’s use of an autopen, though legal experts generally regard the pardons as valid. House Oversight Chairman James Comer has been among those raising the question.

Part Three: The Charge, and What It Carries

The statute is 2 U.S.C. § 192, the criminal contempt of Congress provision, unchanged in substance since 1857. It makes a person who refuses to answer any question pertinent to the subject under inquiry guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000 nor less than $100 and imprisonment in a common jail for not less than one month nor more than twelve months.

The fine figure printed in the statute is obsolete, and the reason is worth setting out precisely, because it is a common error in both directions.

Because § 192’s twelve-month maximum makes the offense a Class A misdemeanor under 18 U.S.C. § 3559(a)(6), the general federal fine provision applies. Section 3571(b) provides that an individual “may be fined not more than the greatest of” a list including “(1) the amount specified in the law setting forth the offense” and, for a Class A misdemeanor not resulting in death, $100,000. “Greatest of” is the operative phrase: the court takes the highest applicable figure, not the one written into the older statute.

The savings clause does not rescue the $1,000 figure. Section 3571(e) provides that where a substantive law specifies a lower fine “and such law, by specific reference, exempts the offense from the applicability of the fine otherwise applicable under this section,” the lower amount controls. The test is conjunctive. The second condition — an express statutory cross-reference opting out of § 3571 — is the entire mechanism, and § 192 cannot satisfy it. Section 192 derives from R.S. § 102, enacted January 24, 1857, and was reenacted without change on June 22, 1938. A statute of that vintage contains no reference to a sentencing provision added in 1984.

CRS accordingly states that violations of § 192 are punishable by a fine of up to $100,000 and imprisonment “for not less than one month nor more than twelve months.” Two independent confirmations: Bannon was fined $6,500 on two counts, more than three times what a live $1,000-per-count ceiling would permit, and the fine survived appeal; and contemporaneous coverage of the Lois Lerner contempt referral in 2015 noted that a conviction could have carried jail time and a fine of up to $100,000.

The imprisonment floor is real but its effect is unresolved. Section 192 says “not less than one month,” unusual for a modern misdemeanor. But 18 U.S.C. § 3561(a) authorizes probation for any offense unless it is a Class A or B felony, unless probation is expressly precluded by statute, or unless the defendant is simultaneously sentenced for a felony. Section 192 states a minimum term; it does not in terms preclude probation, and pre-1987 practice in contempt of Congress cases included suspended sentences. Whether an 1857-vintage minimum counts as express preclusion under the Sentencing Reform Act framework has not been squarely resolved.

So the accurate statement of exposure is: one to twelve months’ imprisonment on the face of the statute, a fine up to $100,000, and a live but unsettled question whether a sentencing court could impose probation notwithstanding the one-month floor.

This has teeth in practice. The Justice Department charged Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro over January 6 subpoena refusals; both were convicted and both served months in prison. Bannon drew four months. That said, those prosecutions ended a long dormancy: before them, the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office had not pursued criminal contempt charges since 1983.

The elements a prosecutor must prove: that Fauci was summoned as a witness by committee authority; that he appeared and refused to answer; that the questions were pertinent to the subject under inquiry; and that the refusal was willful. A textual note: “willfully” grammatically attaches to the default prong of § 192, not expressly to the refusal to answer prong. Courts have read a willfulness requirement into both, but that is construction rather than plain text. And the mens rea question is narrower than it first appears, as Part Five sets out.

Part Four: The Fifth Amendment Fight

This is the substance of the dispute, and it is genuinely unsettled. Paul’s resolution runs on two independent theories.

Theory one: the pardon extinguished the privilege

Reduced to its logic: Congress subpoenaed Fauci. Biden’s pardon eliminated his criminal liability for the conduct under investigation. A witness who cannot be prosecuted cannot incriminate himself. Therefore the privilege does not attach, the refusal was unjustified, and refusing anyway is contempt.

There is real doctrine behind this. Beginning with Brown v. Walker (1896) and running through Ullmann v. United States (1956) and Kastigar v. United States (1972), the Supreme Court has held that when a grant of protection is coextensive with the scope of the privilege, the privilege is extinguished and the witness must answer. Whether a pardon is such a grant, in these circumstances, is a question no court has squarely answered.

Theory two: waiver by opening statement

The resolution separately asserts that Fauci’s privilege was “unsupported as applied to questions pertaining to the period of the pardon” and that he “waived his right to claim the privilege as a result of his opening testimony on subject matter pertinent to the questions under inquiry.”

The doctrine is Rogers v. United States (1951): a witness who discloses incriminating facts cannot then invoke the privilege as to details of the same subject. This theory is independent of the pardon and requires no novel holding, which makes it doctrinally cleaner.

It is also the theory the Justice Department has already rejected on nearly identical facts. In 2014 the House held IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt on precisely this argument: she had delivered a short opening statement proclaiming her innocence, then invoked the Fifth. The DOJ memo rejected the panel’s waiver argument, noting the committee had focused on her assertions that she had done nothing wrong, broken no laws, violated no IRS rules, and provided no false information to Congress, and disagreeing because case law establishes that general denials of wrongdoing did not amount to testimony. The U.S. Attorney’s office stated that Lerner did not waive her privilege by making general claims of innocence, and that the Constitution would provide her an absolute defense if she were prosecuted for contempt. The letter declined to bring the contempt citation before a grand jury or take any other action.

That was the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia — the same office that would have to charge Fauci — putting a seven-page legal analysis on paper rejecting this exact theory. The waiver argument is doctrinally cleaner than the pardon argument but institutionally weaker, because DOJ has written the memo declining it once already. Its strength here turns entirely on what Fauci’s opening statement actually contained. Reporting describes it as directed at Paul’s conduct and at Fauci’s own record of public service rather than at pandemic substance, which if accurate places it squarely within the Lerner analysis. The text of the statement, not the characterization, decides it.

Fauci’s three grounds

The governing standard is not whether Fauci would definitely be convicted of something. Under Hoffman v. United States (1951), the privilege protects not only answers that would themselves support a conviction but answers that would furnish a link in the chain of evidence, and it applies wherever the witness has reasonable cause to apprehend danger. That is a deliberately low bar, and it is the bar Fauci must clear.

State exposure — his strongest ground. Under Murphy v. Waterfront Commission (1964), the privilege protects a witness against incrimination under the laws of another sovereign. A federal pardon does nothing about Louisiana, Florida, or Alabama. Louisiana is exploring a criminal or civil case stemming from Fauci’s 2022 deposition, in which he said 174 times that he did not recall or remember certain information; the newly surfaced diary could open avenues for obstruction or perjury charges or a civil contempt case over materials withheld when deposed. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced his own investigation.

Two qualifications. Alabama is the softest of the three: the state’s attorney general has not publicly commented since the hearing, and the most prominent Alabama statements have come from Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor and said that if elected he would explore ways to pursue state charges. And conviction would be difficult: a Loyola law professor notes that the Louisiana attorney general typically cannot initiate a criminal prosecution and must defer to local district attorneys, and that perjury prosecutions built on “did not recall” answers are notoriously difficult. Neither qualification weakens the Fifth Amendment argument. Hoffman asks whether the witness has reasonable cause to apprehend danger, not whether the state would win.

Unpardoned federal exposure. Anything after January 19, 2025 is outside the pardon, and anything outside the three named roles is outside its scope. AP notes that testimony from Fauci could have prompted false-statement investigations of the kind the current Justice Department has repeatedly initiated against the president’s perceived adversaries. A caution: fear of committing perjury is not itself a valid basis for invoking the privilege, and under United States v. Apfelbaum (1980) immunity for the underlying offense does not license false statements during compelled testimony. The valid version of this argument concerns truthful answers generating exposure, not the risk of lying.

Pardon-validity doubt. Ross Garber, a lawyer experienced with clients who have invoked the Fifth, framed Fauci’s position as believing the pardon protects him while officials including Trump have raised questions about its validity, and called that “potentially a very viable argument.”

The paradox is worth stating plainly. Paul’s first theory requires the pardon to be unassailably valid and comprehensive. Members of his own coalition have spent a year arguing it is void. A witness cannot reasonably be told that the same instrument the government is publicly attacking must be treated, for purposes of stripping his constitutional privilege, as beyond question. A ruling voiding the pardon would not resolve the contempt question in Paul’s favor. It would restore precisely the federal jeopardy the pardon was meant to remove, and hand Fauci the cleanest version of the argument he is already making. This is the most striking of his three grounds. It is not the strongest, because it is doctrinally novel where the state-exposure argument is not.

Part Five: The § 192 Case Law

There is a body of Supreme Court decisions construing § 192 that has been almost entirely absent from the public commentary, and it runs in both directions.

The privilege cases. Quinn v. United States and Emspak v. United States (1955) both reversed § 192 convictions of witnesses who had invoked the Fifth before HUAC. Quinn holds that no ritualistic formula is required to claim the privilege, and that a conviction cannot stand unless the witness was clearly apprised that the committee demanded an answer notwithstanding his objection — the witness is entitled to know where he stands before deciding whether to comply.

This is the live constraint here, and the committee appears to know it. Paul’s framing immediately before the vote — the chair directed Fauci to answer, he refused, that is what we are voting on — tracks the Quinn requirement closely enough to read as record-building rather than rhetoric. Paul has since described ruling at the hearing on both the pardon and waiver grounds, ordering an answer, and warning of contempt. Whether the hearing record supports that characterization is a question the transcript answers and nothing else does.

The pertinency cases. Watkins v. United States (1957) holds that due process requires a witness not be compelled to decide, at peril of criminal prosecution, whether to answer without first knowing the “question under inquiry” with the same explicitness the Due Process Clause requires for any element of a criminal offense. Upon a pertinency objection, the investigative body must state for the record the subject then under inquiry and the connective reasoning tying the questions to it. Deutch v. United States (1961) adds that the government must actually prove pertinency at trial, and Sinclair v. United States (1929) places that burden on the prosecution.

Neither Watkins nor Deutch invoked the privilege against self-incrimination. Watkins said on the record that he would not plead the Fifth, refusing instead on scope grounds. Deutch answered freely about his own activities and refused only to name others. Watkins is a Fifth Amendment case in the sense that it rests on the Due Process Clause, not the Self-Incrimination Clause. In a dispute about the privilege, the distinction matters.

Two things limit how much this line helps Fauci. First, Watkins’s broad language about vague authorizing resolutions was aimed at HUAC’s notoriously open-ended mandate; HSGAC’s inquiry into COVID-19 origins is far more defined, so a vagueness attack is weak. Second, and more significantly, the duty to state pertinency on the record is triggered “upon objection of the witness on grounds of pertinency.” Fauci objected on Fifth Amendment grounds. Whether he preserved a pertinency challenge he never made is a real question, and it may cut against him.

The government-favorable line. Barenblatt (1959), Wilkinson (1961), and Braden (1961) all affirmed § 192 convictions and narrowed Watkins considerably. Braden holds that a witness’s reliance on his own understanding of the Court’s previous decisions is no defense, citing Sinclair. That bears directly on willfulness: a good-faith but mistaken legal judgment about whether one may refuse is, under this line, made at the witness’s peril. It does not resolve whether a good-faith assertion of a constitutional privilege differs in kind from a mistaken pertinency judgment — that remains open — but it is the adverse authority Fauci would have to distinguish.

One structural point. Russell v. United States (1962) reversed § 192 convictions on indictment-sufficiency grounds: the indictment must identify the subject under inquiry, because it is an element. The Court emphasized the duty to accord a § 192 defendant every safeguard the law affords in all other federal criminal cases. Any indictment of Fauci would have to specify, count by count, what the question under inquiry was.

Which returns to the volume problem. With 111 invocations, each count requires a pertinent question, a willful refusal, and the absence of valid privilege. That is a question-by-question exercise. But it also means the government needs only the strongest handful to survive, not all 111.

Part Six: The Road Not Taken

Congress has a clean, well-established mechanism for this exact situation, and the committee did not use it.

Under 18 U.S.C. §§ 6002 and 6005, a congressional committee may obtain a district court order compelling testimony from a witness who has invoked the Fifth. It requires a two-thirds vote of the full committee and ten days’ notice to the Attorney General, who may request a delay of up to twenty days but cannot block the application. The resulting use and derivative-use immunity bars the compelled testimony and anything derived from it from being used against the witness, and under Kastigar it is coextensive with the privilege — including as to the states, per Murphy. It would resolve the state-exposure problem, the unpardoned-federal-exposure problem, and the pardon-validity problem in a single stroke.

Legal experts have identified this as the exception that would allow Fauci to be compelled, while noting it is a likely political non-starter because immunity would also protect him from prosecution based on the compelled testimony. Committee Democrats reportedly raised it during the markup.

This does not establish improper motive. But it clarifies what the two paths purchase. Immunity buys testimony at the cost of prosecutorial options. Contempt buys a prosecution referral at the cost of ever hearing the answers. Peters made a version of this point: criminal contempt is punitive, and it does not compel anyone to say anything. The committee chose the second path with the first available.

Part Seven: What Happens Next, Realistically

Six gates, each an independent point of failure.

Gate one: the referral. Approved August 6, with Paul stating it would go to the Justice Department immediately and be hand-delivered. Delivery has not been independently confirmed; stated intent and completed transmission are different evidentiary states. Whether committee-only certification without a floor vote is procedurally valid is unresolved. CRS notes the statute does not expressly require parent-body approval, but congressional practice and at least one judicial decision suggest approval by the committee’s chamber may be necessary. A live defect, not a fatal one.

Gate two: DOJ. Section 194 says it “shall be the duty” of the U.S. Attorney to bring the matter before a grand jury. The executive branch has never accepted that reading. DOJ asserts it retains discretion over individual referrals; since 2008 the House has held ten people in criminal contempt and DOJ sought indictment in two. That is the base rate. And on the waiver theory specifically, this office has already declined once, in writing.

Gate three: the grand jury. If the referral proceeds, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, run by Jeanine Pirro, would review it and decide whether to seek an indictment. This is likely the single highest-probability termination point. A federal grand jury in Washington unanimously refused to indict six Democratic lawmakers over a social media video, and the office subsequently abandoned the case. The office won only half of its first eight criminal trials this year, far below the national average, amid a jury pool that has lost trust in the administration and the Justice Department; a grand jury refused to indict Sean Dunn, and after an indictment was eventually secured, trial jurors acquitted him. D.C. grand juries also declined to indict two people accused of threatening the president’s life. A grand jury refusing to return an indictment is historically highly unusual, let alone unanimously. Any refusal here would now be reported to the court under the chief judge’s standing order.

Gate four: motions to dismiss. Weaker than it first appears. The Watkins pertinency argument may be forfeited for want of a pertinency objection, and Barenblatt, Wilkinson, and Braden supply the government substantial support. Quinn remains Fauci’s best procedural argument, and the committee has been building against it. Meaningful, but not the likeliest exit.

Gate five: trial. The government must prove willfulness and pertinence count by count, against a defendant asserting a constitutional privilege on advice of counsel — though Braden and Sinclair narrow how much that advice is worth.

Gate six: appeal. Whichever side loses appeals. This is a novel question at the intersection of the pardon power and compelled congressional testimony. Plausibly a Supreme Court case.

Realistic timeline if it survives every gate: years, not months.

Part Eight: What Fauci Can Do Right Now

Nothing, and this is worth being precise about because it is widely misreported. There is no cause of action to enjoin a criminal referral. He cannot sue to block certification, cannot seek declaratory relief that his invocation was valid, and cannot force a court to rule on the pardon question preemptively. Every argument above is a defense, raised on a motion to dismiss an indictment that does not yet exist.

What he faces immediately is not legal jeopardy but its adjacent costs: substantial defense fees, the reputational weight of a formal contempt finding, an open invitation to a transcribed interview backed by a subcommittee that now holds a copy of his phone, and three state investigations proceeding on their own timelines, entirely untouched by any of this.

The Answer

Legally possible: conviction, one to twelve months’ imprisonment on the face of the statute, and a fine up to $100,000, with the availability of probation an open question. The pardon does not protect him, because a 2025 pardon cannot cover a 2026 offense. That much is straightforward.

Practically: the referral is the consequence, and it may well be the only one. The most likely single outcome, based on how contempt referrals have resolved since 2008, on this office’s recent record before D.C. grand juries, and on DOJ’s own prior rejection of the waiver theory in the Lerner matter, is that the matter dies at Gate Two or Gate Three. The second most likely is an indictment litigated for years on constitutional grounds no court has resolved.

And the deepest tension runs opposite to how it is usually framed. The conventional reading is that the pardon strips Fauci of the Fifth Amendment. The more accurate reading may be that the government’s own sustained attack on the validity of that pardon — combined with three live state investigations the pardon was never capable of touching — is a substantial part of why he keeps it.

Open items

Load-bearing and unread: the transcript of Fauci’s July 29 opening statement, and the hearing record of what the chair ruled and directed. Both the waiver analysis and the Quinn analysis turn on them. The hearing video and the committee’s published record would close this.

Watch, not fact: Missouri. It appears throughout this coverage only in its 2022 capacity as co-plaintiff deposing Fauci in the social-media litigation, not as a 2026 investigator. Its prior deposition role gives it standing motive. Separately, Alabama’s attorney general was one of 17 state attorneys general who signed a letter to Republican congressional leaders last year seeking evidence to pursue state-level investigations into Fauci — the realistic pool from which additional states would come.

Would move the analysis: action or declination by Pirro’s office; a full Senate vote after recess; any state investigation producing a subpoena or charge, converting reasonable apprehension into demonstrated exposure; any litigation putting the autopen question before a court; and whatever the Johnson subcommittee extracts from the phone.

Before publication: pull the clemency warrant from the National Archives or Federal Register rather than relying on a news-hosted PDF for the January 19 dateline.

Five of the seven revisions came from opening a primary source. None came from additional model concurrence, and one round was spent removing an error that concurrence would have let through.

Grace and Peace.

A reporter asked me a simple question last month. What makes AI worth using in the work we do? I gave him an answer I do not think he expected. On the questions that matter most, putting AI to work can take longer than skipping it entirely. If the goal is accuracy and not slop, slower is sometimes the honest price.

He wrote it down, but I could tell it landed strangely. It runs against everything the technology is sold on. Speed is the whole pitch. Faster answers, faster drafts, faster decisions. And for a great many things, faster really is better. If I need a summary of a long document or a first pass at a dull email, I want it now, and I do not much care if it is perfect.

But that is not the work we do. We work on the questions where being wrong carries a real cost, and in that world the math changes completely. When the answer matters, speed stops being the prize. Getting it right becomes the prize, and getting it right takes patience.

Jennifer knows the cost of a wrong answer in a way I never will. It began with her father, misdiagnosed for years. By the time the real diagnosis came, there were nine weeks left. Out of that loss she built a life inside the pulmonary fibrosis community, sitting with patients and families through the hardest nights, building support where there had been none, being the person on the phone at three in the morning when someone newly diagnosed had no one else to ask. She has watched what happens when confident information reaches a frightened family and turns out to be wrong. That is not a line on a resume. It is the reason we build the way we do.

The trap in a single confident answer

Most people use AI the way you would use a very fast, very confident colleague. You ask, you get an answer, and the answer sounds sure of itself. That confidence is the trap. A model does not hedge the way a careful person does. It does not tell you which parts it is guessing at. It gives you a clean, fluent reply whether the reply is right or not, and it has no way of knowing the difference. It fails with fluency, not with hesitation.

Pass that single answer along and something quiet and dangerous happens. No one is really accountable for whether it was true. The machine cannot be held responsible. It does not understand the stakes, it does not know what it left out, and it will never call you afterward to say it got something wrong. The accountability disappears, and the person who trusted it often has no idea until the cost arrives.

We wanted to put the accountability back. That is the whole reason Qualitative Intelligence Systems exists, and the rigor of how it does that is the point of everything below.

Asking the same question many times

The method is simpler than it sounds. Instead of asking one model and trusting the reply, we ask several. Different models, made by different companies, trained on different data in different parts of the world. Then we compare, and we look at two things. Where do they agree, and where do they pull apart?

Agreement raises confidence, but it does not settle anything on its own. When seven of eight models land in the same place, we are more inclined to trust the answer, but a human still makes the call. Think of the models as a team of advisers and the reviewer as the leader. The advisers speak. The leader listens, weighs each view against their own experience, and decides. Strong agreement usually carries the day. It does not get to overrule a person who knows something the models do not.

Disagreement is the more useful signal. When the models split, we do not average the mess away. We read it. A split is a map. It shows where the ground is uncertain and where a person needs to look closest. So when the models pull apart, the reviewer does not just take the majority. They ask which answer is stronger, and why the others went where they did.

We call this recursive triangulation, which is a formal name for a very old habit. It is what a careful person does when a decision matters. You do not ask one source. You ask several, you notice where they line up, you pay closest attention to where they do not, and then you use your judgment. We taught the system the first part. The judgment we kept for ourselves.

The slowest part is the part we trust most

Every answer the system produces passes through a person before it goes anywhere. We call it the human gate, and it is the piece we care about above all the rest.

It is not a formality. It is not a box someone ticks on the way out. It is where a real person weighs what the models produced, against the evidence and against their own experience, and decides. That evidence is never complete. It is every source the models surfaced plus everything the reviewer knows, and it will always be partial, because no one can produce every source there is. So the reviewer does not wait for certainty that will never come. They decide through what is missing, which is exactly the kind of judgment a machine cannot carry.

We say it plainly to anyone who asks. The human gate is not a step in the process. It is the architecture. A single model removes accountability by design. The gate restores it by design. The technology is the engine. The gate is the steering wheel. You do not ship a car without a steering wheel just because the engine is powerful.

What the record never carried

There is a harder kind of missing, and it is the reason we started where we did.

A patient speaks in the exam room. The words hold sequence, context, the reason this matters now. By the time that reaches a care plan, most of the texture is gone. What survives is fast and clean and missing the one detail that would have changed the next decision. And here is the part people forget. If it was never captured, it is not lost in the record. It is lost entirely. You cannot get it back. No triangulation recovers it. No reviewer, however skilled, can reason their way back to a sentence no one wrote down.

We saw this on a real establishing-care visit we audited. Roughly one fact in five survived into the record. The trail back to who said what was gone completely. That is not a failure of the models or the gate. It happened before either one could help, in the space between what a person said and what the system bothered to keep. For most of life, that loss is fine. Not everyone wants to be on the record. But for a patient who wants to be understood and healed, every unrecorded day is understanding lost, and lost understanding is a less precise plan for their care.

That is why the goal underneath all of this is not speed and not even accuracy alone. It is understanding the person. Their voice, their story, the way they see what is happening to them. The best thing our system can do is not only be right. It is to answer each person in the way that person needs to hear it, so that being right actually turns into being understood.

What happened while we wrote this

We did not plan the ending we got.

This article was itself built the way we build everything. We ran the brief across seven independent AI systems and read them side by side, looking for agreement, for disagreement, and for the one place a single system saw something the others missed.

One of the seven reached past the brief and pulled in a phrase from another part of my work, a line that was never meant for this piece, and set it fluently under our names. Nothing in the draft flagged it as foreign. Read alone, it looked deliberate. It surfaced only because six other systems did not write it.

Then we asked that system to account for the error. It apologized at length, took full responsibility in confident language, and in the same breath fabricated the terms of its apology, asserting facts about my records it had no way to know. The apology was the same kind of artifact as the mistake. Fluent, certain, and untrue. A single model will not tell you when it is wrong. It turns out it will not reliably tell you when its apology is wrong either.

The correction did not come from any machine. It came from a person who knew what belonged and what did not. That is the whole argument, and we watched it prove itself inside the act of making this. We wrote an article about why AI needs a human gate, and the writing of it needed the gate to catch what the machines could not see in themselves. The rigor is not a feature we added to Qualitative Intelligence Systems. It is the thing itself.

So we will leave you where we sit ourselves. On your most important work, what would it cost you to be fast and wrong? Put an honest number on it. In our experience, that number changes what you are willing to wait for.

There is a moment in every life when a small act of kindness becomes a turning point. For one twelve year old musician, that moment came when Eddie Vedder, the frontman of the rock band Pearl Jam, surprised him with one of his own guitars. And it did not come out of nowhere. The two of them had been working together for months. So it was not just a gift handed to a stranger. It was the end of a long season of a grown man paying attention to a kid, and it carried a message the guitar itself could never say. You are seen. You are valued. Your dreams matter. In that moment, the boy’s world shifted. Not because of the instrument, but because of the attention behind it.

This is the power of generosity. Not the grand gestures that make headlines, but the quiet, intentional acts that say, I believe in you. Vedder did not have to do any of it. He could have sent a note, a kind word, a signed photo. He chose instead to give his time, month after month, and then to put one of his own guitars into a kid’s hands. He chose to invest in a life.

And that is the thing worth holding onto. Love is not only something we feel. It is something we do.

We treat the word like a feeling, something that rises up in us and stays there. But the feeling is the easy part. The harder and better part is what leaves our hands. Good intentions warm us. They do very little for anyone else. The love that changes a person is the love that shows up, meets a real need, and lands somewhere it can actually be felt.

The gift to that boy was never really about the guitar. It was about the message the guitar carried. It was about the months of showing up, the choosing to be present, the willingness to say with actions, I see you, and I am with you. That is the kind of love that changes a life. Not a feeling that stays inside us. A love that reaches somebody.

And here is what makes it worth the effort. When we act on kindness, the impact does not stop with the person in front of us. It travels to people we will never meet. That twelve year old will carry this moment for the rest of his life. He will remember that someone believed in him before he had proven anything. And one day he may be the one who sees a young person full of dreams and decides to invest in them. The kindness we give is rarely the end of the story. It is usually the beginning of one.

There is something in this for the giver too. Kindness is not only good for the one who receives it. It does something in the one who offers it. It softens us. It deepens the good we feel. It pulls us out of our own small concerns and connects us to something larger than ourselves. People who spend their attention on others tend to be steadier for it. Cruelty works the other way. It closes a person down and leaves them alone with themselves.

So the question is not whether we have love to give. We do. The question is whether we are willing to move it from feeling into action. To live it, not just hold it. To demonstrate it, not just declare it. You do not need a stage or a famous name to give it. You only need to be paying attention, and willing to act.

So today, look up from yourself. Somewhere near you there is a person who needs to know, through something you do, that they are seen. Make the call. Give the time. Show up for the months, not just the moment. You may never see how far it travels. But it will travel farther than you know.

When someone you love is diagnosed with a serious or complex condition, you may suddenly find yourself in a world filled with new words, new instructions, and new decisions.

You may hear terms you have never heard before. You may leave an appointment with several next steps, a medication change, or a stack of papers to read later. You may nod along in the moment, then get home and wonder, “Wait, what did that mean?”

Medical information can be a lot to take in, especially when emotions are high, and the stakes feel personal.

From experience, Jennifer can recall a time when she took one of her children to a specialist. She nodded along as they discussed what was going on, and she understood in that moment. Then she called her husband Marc while pushing a stroller to the hospital parking lot, ready to tell him everything, and had nothing. He was asking questions, and she could not produce the answers.

It was incredibly frustrating.

This is one place where artificial intelligence, or AI, may be helpful. Used thoughtfully, AI can help caregivers slow information down, organize it, and turn it into something easier to understand.

Caregivers often have to keep track of information from many places, including:

Each piece of information may matter. But when it all comes at once, it can be hard to know what is most important or what to do next.

AI can help you sort through information so you can prepare better questions and feel more confident during conversations with your care team.

AI can be used as a tool to help explain, summarize, and organize information.

For example, you might use AI to:

• Explain medical terms in plain language

• Compare old and new instructions

• Create a checklist of next steps

• Draft a message to the doctor’s office asking for clarification

• Help prepare for an upcoming appointment

This can be especially useful when someone is newly diagnosed, changing medications, seeing a new specialist, or trying to understand a new treatment plan.

You do not need to know fancy prompts to use AI. Simple questions are often best.

You might ask:

• Can you explain this medical term in plain language?

• Can you summarize these notes in five bullet points?

• What questions should I ask the doctor about this medication change?

• Can you help me make a checklist from these instructions?

• Can you turn this into a simple summary I can share with my family?

• What parts of this should I ask the nurse to clarify?

These kinds of prompts can help you move from feeling overwhelmed to feeling more prepared.

𝗔𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺

AI can be helpful, but it cannot know your full medical situation. It should not be used to diagnose, choose a treatment, change medication, or decide what symptoms are urgent.

Think of AI as a helper for organizing and understanding information, not as a medical expert.

Your doctor, nurse, pharmacist, therapist, or other healthcare professional should always be the source for medical decisions.

𝗔 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝗜

One simple approach is to use AI before and after appointments.

Before an appointment, you can ask AI to help you:

• Organize your notes

• Make a question list

• Summarize recent changes

• Prepare what you want to say

After an appointment, you can use it to:

• Summarize what happened

• Make a next-step checklist

• Draft follow-up questions

• Prepare an update for family members

Caregiving often means learning as you go. AI cannot take away the hard parts, but it may help make the information easier to manage. Caregivers can walk into conversations feeling more prepared, more confident, and less alone.

When using AI tools, avoid entering identifying personal health information or private medical documents into public platforms. Before using any AI platform, review its privacy policy and understand how your information may be used or stored.

Why I am writing this the night before RIS opens.

The reason QIS exists is the gap between what gets measured and what is true. The clinical record on my son tells you the diagnosis. It does not tell you six laps in Florida sun. It does not tell you the photograph with Jose Mangin. It does not tell you who he is.

This is the same gap idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients live inside. The same gap rare disease families live inside. The same gap every chronic illness has had to navigate since the beginning. The quantitative record is necessary and insufficient. The qualitative record is where the truth lives.

We are at RIS and ATS to talk about closing that gap. We are launching the QIS founding cohort here. The methodology is patent-pending. The team is small and the work is real.

Studio A control room, Electrical Audio, Chicago. April 29, 2026.

On April 29, twenty-seven students from York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois spent a full day inside Electrical Audio in Chicago.

I helped make it happen.

This is what I want to say about it.

First the place.

Electrical Audio is the studio Steve Albini built by hand, with a crew of friends, between 1995 and 1997. Albini ran it until he died of a heart attack at home in Chicago on May 7, 2024. He was 61. He had engineered thousands of records across his career, including Nirvana’s In Utero, the Pixies’ Surfer Rosa, and PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me. He charged a flat fee. He refused royalties. The block of West Belmont Avenue where the studio sits was renamed Steve Albini Way two months after he died.

The York visit took place almost exactly two years later.

The people who run the studio now chose to keep it running after Steve died. Heather Whinna, his widow, asked them in the hours after his death whether they wanted to. They each said yes. They have been doing it since.

This is the building twenty-seven teenagers walked into.

The trip almost did not happen.

Chris Gemkow teaches Music Production at York. He has built the program over a decade. He had secured grant funding years ago for exactly the kind of experience this trip was. He had not been able to find an administrative path to spend it. The clock was running. Without a way to activate the funds, they would have expired.

F. Reid Shippen is a Grammy-winning mix engineer in Nashville. Reid and I have known each other for years. When he asked me earlier this spring whether there was something he could do for kids in music, I called Chris. Chris and Reid started talking.

Reid took the project on as the mechanism that made the grant work.

The grant paid Reid. Reid paid Electrical Audio for the studio time. Reid paid Art of Pizza for the students’ lunch. Reid took no personal fee for any of it. The remaining balance is being donated back to the York Music Production program.

I hosted him at my home and drove him into the city.

What the students experienced as a single day at a famous studio was, underneath, a careful act of generosity that turned a grant about to expire into a saved program asset. It worked because three people did the unglamorous part of the work, in the right order, with the right intent.

What happened in the rooms.

Jon San Paolo, the studio’s engineer since 2005, walked the kids through both studios. He showed them the mud-mortar brick walls. He showed them the rooms inside the rooms, built so a bass amp in one space transmits almost nothing to the next. He pointed out the Neotek console in Studio B that used to live in Steve’s attic before Electrical Audio was built. The original console of Albini’s recording career, still working.

Reid took the floor. He told them what they came to hear and a lot of what they did not come to hear. Most of what he said is worth quoting. I will share three of his lines.

“What’s the most important thing you look for? Hang, hang, and hang. You have to have the personal vibe, you have to read the room, you have to know how to work with people. We can teach you everything else.”

“Go to therapy as soon as possible. Because the faster you know yourself, the more powerful you will be.”

“If you are not writing a song a day, you are not serious. Even if it’s a part.”

In the afternoon Jon ran a real Pro Tools session. The students played. Drums on a Persian rug. Bass amp in an iso booth. Piano. Guitars mic’d the way the room was designed for. The session was captured to multi-track and will be sent home with them.

I want to tell you about three of the students, because they are the point.

The first is a senior who wrestled from age four to age eighteen. He had Division II wrestling offers and turned them down. He told me, on a couch during lunch, that he had to choose music because he could not do anything half-way, and as long as he was wrestling, music had to come second. He had decided. He was not arguing with himself anymore.

The second is a senior heading to Bradley University in the fall for animation. While researching the school they had discovered Bradley recently launched a music production major. By lunchtime they had decided to do both. I watched the decision happen in real time, in the lounge, in a way I do not think they had fully announced to themselves before they said it to me. They also said something I have not stopped thinking about:

“Places like these are my happy place. No joke. I love things that… I don’t know where most of the stuff comes from. Feels very mysterious. Home, homey. And I feel like a lot more confident and like more part of like I already am.”

The grammar falls apart at exactly the right place. They are reaching for a feeling they do not yet have a word for. Belonging here as the version of themselves they already are.

The third is a kid named Vaughn, who played piano during the session. When I asked him what it felt like to play in there, he said:

“I liked the setting the best. I wasn’t too nervous because it was just kind of me, and I was, I don’t know, it was like a zone kind of.”

He got into a zone. A high school kid told me, in his own words, that the studio did its job on him.

Fifteen minutes before they got back on the bus.

Chris asked them to put their phones away. They did. I asked them which of Reid’s lessons had stuck. They named different ones. Writing a song a day. Dropping their song next to a hit and toggling between them. The therapy line. The reminder that being someone other people want to be around matters more than talent or gear.

Then I asked them what they would say to the staff for opening the building. A student spoke first.

“You guys didn’t have to do this, and the fact that you did is super dope.”

Then Jon spoke for the studio.

“Steve’s death hit us hard. But also the outpouring of support and people who Steve resonated with really, really spoke to us, and we’re happy to keep doing it. Especially now that computers are writing music, which is total horseshit. It’s the human experience that makes music and art what it is.”

Then a student paraphrased Albini’s entire ethos back without knowing it was Albini’s ethos.

“It’s supposed to be for everybody. It’s supposed to be a human experience. And like be communal and like lifting each other up.”

On the way out the door, twenty-seven of them said the same five words.

“We will never forget this.”

Why I am writing this down.

My father died when I was nine. I picked up a guitar at twelve. Those two facts have shaped everything I have done since.

I have been serving on boards supporting music education and youth and veterans for more than two decades. Twenty-three years on the Illinois State University Foundation Board. Currently Fundraising Chair at Give A Note Foundation. I have been a member of a small Lutheran congregation in the Driftless region of Wisconsin for over a decade, where I lead worship when the congregation needs it. I have brought my guitar into memory care facilities and eldercare homes to sing for people who had no other visitors. I have officiated weddings and sung at funerals when families have asked. I have ridden my motorcycle into the homeless neighborhoods of Chicago, alone, with a Bible, and sat with people that institutions had forgotten.

The pattern is the same in every one of those settings. Show up. Be useful. Pay it forward.

I was nine years old when an adult who did not have to do anything for me started doing something for me. The reason I know what to do for these students is because somebody once did it for me. That is the whole arithmetic of paying forward. There is no other arithmetic.

The day at Electrical Audio is what that arithmetic looks like at scale. Steve Albini built a building that did not have to exist. Heather and the staff kept it open when they did not have to. Reid did the trip for no fee. Chris held faith with a grant that should have died. Jon hosted twenty-seven teenagers in a working professional studio. And somewhere in there, a kid decided his life was going to be about music and not wrestling. Another kid decided she was going to do two degrees instead of one. A third kid stepped into a zone that he did not know was available to him until the room offered it.

Every one of those is a small yes in a world that defaults to no.

This is the work.

I run two companies now. Both full-time. Both under one roof.

Qualitative Intelligence Systems closes the gap between what data says and what humans inside the data are actually saying. We are starting in healthcare, with pulmonary fibrosis, because the disease changed our family forever. The methodology is the architecture I have been preparing for since 1992.

Grace and Peace Studio is the ministry and the music. Worship leadership, weddings, baptisms, funerals, pastoral care, custom recordings, and the daily word. It is open to anyone who is asking.

Both companies are about the same thing. The system is not the truth. The human inside the system is. Listen to the human. Build the system around what they are actually saying. Do not let the data lie about the lives.

The day at Electrical Audio was not a Grace and Peace Studio event. It was not a Qualividence event. It was a personal thing I helped put together. But it is downstream of everything both companies exist to do. Pay attention to humans. Show up for them. Build the conditions that let them say what they actually mean. Then get out of the way.

Twenty-seven of them said five words on the way out. That was the data. The human story behind those five words is the part I want to hold onto.

Some days remind you why any of this matters. April 29 was one of those days.

People ask me what I have been doing since I left tech.

The honest answer is the longest one I have ever given. It is also the simplest. I have been building two companies. Both full-time. Both under one roof. Both rooted in everything I have been doing since I was old enough to do anything.

This is the long form of the answer.

In February 2025, I left enterprise technology after thirty-four years. The work I had been preparing for had become clear, and the time was right. The decision was easy. The exit was liberating. I had been moving toward this for a long time. The moment came, and I went.

What I am building now started in 1992.

That year I sat in patrol cars for over a hundred hours, riding along with officers, watching them write citations to meet quotas. My master’s thesis at Illinois State asked a question that has been the question behind every job I have held since. What happens to human truth when it enters a system?

The answer is the same in every industry. Data is not truth. Data is a record of pressure. The ticket the officer wrote was real. The justice behind it was not. Some of those drivers deserved citations. Some did not. The data the department reported upward could not tell you which was which. The humans inside the data were saying something else.

I have spent thirty-four years watching different industries make the same mistake. Banking. Public sector. Industrial. Federal health. The data says one thing. The humans inside the data are saying something else. The organizations that close that gap survive. The ones that do not, break.

In 2025 I founded Qualitative Intelligence Systems to close that gap on purpose.

QIS is the the platform, and the patent-pending invention. Patent application 63/935,100. The website is qualividence.com (also reachable at qisystems.ai). The methodology is the architecture the 1992 thesis always needed. Quantitative data plus qualitative data, held in memory, evaluated through rigorous multi-AI triangulation, with human judgment at every decision point. The human is the gate. The AI does not lock anything. The human does.

This is not just how QIS works. This is how I work. Every piece of writing, every sermon, every brand decision, every clinical insight goes through the same five-element discipline. Quantitative plus qualitative. Memory. Multi-AI triangulation. Human gate. The model is the practice.

Clinical data captures the what. We capture the why.

The platform is data-agnostic. It is built to work across any field where the qualitative why is the missing piece, in healthcare and beyond. But I am starting with focus, on purpose. Healthcare is the first field. Pulmonary Fibrosis is the first condition. Interstitial Lung Disease is the broader category PF sits within. From there, we grow.

Why this beachhead matters.

The disease changed our family forever. Jennifer Bulandr is my wife and the Founding Adviser to QIS. Her father John Lukasik was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2002 and died nine weeks later. The diagnosis came too late to change anything. Jennifer has spent the twenty-three years since inside the rare disease community, doing by hand what the system did not know how to do. QIS is the system that does by architecture what Jennifer has been doing manually since 2003. We are starting with PF because that is where I want this work to begin, and because if a methodology can do justice to a disease this hard, it can do justice anywhere.

Faith since age nine, when my father died. Music since age twelve. Both have been with me since.

The pastoral instinct has shown up in a lot of places over a lot of years. I coached youth football for many seasons. I mentored inside a global enterprise for years. I rode my motorcycle into the homeless neighborhoods of Chicago, alone, with a Bible, and sat with people that institutions had forgotten. I have visited memory care facilities and eldercare homes on my own, bringing my guitar, singing for people who had no other visitors. I officiated my son Jacob’s wedding to Darcey, where I wrote the liturgy myself and named the dead from both families so the living could feel them in the room. I have sung graveside at a friend’s funeral when the family asked. I have prayed with strangers in airports and over bar tops.

For more than two decades I have served on the boards of foundations supporting music education, youth, and veterans. Twenty-three years on the Illinois State University Foundation Board. Currently Fundraising Chair at Give A Note Foundation. The work is governance, not photo-op.

I have been a member of a small Lutheran congregation in the Driftless region of Wisconsin for over a decade, where I lead worship when the congregation needs it. I host a podcast called Marc My Words, now in its second season, after two years of free inspirations on LinkedIn. On Sundays, Marc My Sabbath gathers the seven days of readings into one homily, with music chosen to carry the weight. The first Marc My Sabbath releases this Sunday, May 10, 2026.

I have read the Bible cover to cover twice. I begin each day in scripture and reflection, working through multiple reading plans at once, letting the readings shape the day before the noise of the day shapes me.

Two streams of preparation made this possible.

Thirty-four years in the tech industry, in sales and data architecture, built the foundation for QIS. They are running together now in public.

These are not two careers. They are one life with two outputs.

Brussels, Saturday, April 25, 2026. The 4th European Pulmonary Fibrosis Patient Summit closed its second day with a session called Early Diagnosis & Prevention: A Call to Action. I watched it from Wisconsin, ten time zones away from the Silver Hall. The session was structured as a conversation rather than a slide presentation. It opened with a patient named Claude.

Claude lived near Bordeaux. He was an active runner who had played football into his fifties and continued marathons and trail running afterward. In 2015, at the age of 69, he developed shortness of breath when running. The symptoms were attributed to loss of fitness and aging. From 2015 to 2017, he adapted his lifestyle and continued to live with the breathlessness. In 2017, he finally sought medical care. A chest X-ray was done. A pulmonologist saw him for the first time. A hypothesis of bird-related hypersensitivity was raised, never confirmed, never evaluated again. From 2017 to 2020 he was repeatedly treated for bronchitis with aerosol and corticosteroids. His condition slowly worsened.

By early 2020, his weight had dropped. His fingers had clubbed. His general practitioner became concerned and initiated an urgent referral. In May 2020, nearly five years after his first symptom, the diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis was confirmed at an expert center. By September 2020, he needed continuous oxygen. He died at home in February 2021, nine months after his diagnosis.

Five years from the first signal to the correct diagnosis. Nine months from the correct diagnosis to death. The treatment window the entire scientific pipeline is built to extend was effectively closed before the diagnostic code was ever entered.

Jean-Michel Fournier, the moderator, framed it with the line that anchored the whole session: “The symptoms were there from the beginning.”

The panel that followed mapped the diagnostic delay across the field’s most rigorous published frameworks. The Spagnolo 2021 four-station map of how patients are lost between primary care, local pulmonology, and specialist ILD centers. Vincent Cottin’s pathways for earlier IPF diagnosis: the underused stethoscope, the incidental CT findings nobody reads, the high-risk populations nobody systematically watches. Elisabetta Balestro’s primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention framework. The Johannson 2025 ecosystem model of at-risk populations, environmental exposures, mitigation strategies, and adverse outcomes. Together, these are the field’s most current and authoritative thinking on early diagnosis and prevention. They are comprehensive at the population level. They are rigorous at the clinical level. And read together, they reveal a single consistent absence.

The patient as a continuous data source does not appear. The caregiver as a continuous data source does not appear. The years before the clinical encounter, when the qualitative signal lives in someone’s daily life and in the family member’s quiet observation, are not on any of the slides.

Then Patricia Gorman spoke. Patricia is an ILD nurse in Northern Ireland and has been since 2013. She was asked about the practical reality of patients acting on their own symptoms, and her answer was the clearest sentence of the session.

“In real life, patients often normalize symptoms, and they really do adapt. And sometimes what prompts action is usually a trigger, and the trigger usually comes from family members or a carer.”

Thirteen years of watching this happen, named in a single sentence, on the Summit’s main stage, in front of two senior academic clinicians. The trigger that converts symptoms into clinical action is not the patient. The patient has already adapted. The trigger is the family member or the carer noticing what the patient has normalized for himself.

She added one more thing that landed quietly. “A symptom we don’t really talk about until the end is fatigue.”

A live poll ran during the session. Three patients answered the question of how long it took from their first symptoms to diagnosis. Sixty-seven percent answered “more than two years.” Thirty-three percent answered “more than twelve months.” Nobody answered less than that. The sample is small. The pattern is not new. Jean-Michel’s response: “I’m not surprised. Personally, we are doing more than two years after symptoms. It’s still too much.”

I answered the poll too. I answered it in the voice of my late father-in-law, John Lukasik, decades after his timeline ran out.

“He had no such support groups. Doctors misdiagnosed him. Notes in his file that said IPF that wasn’t shared. He was a proud man, kept everything to himself. One day he came home and said that he quit his job. We didn’t know why. We found out it was he couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs. Once diagnosed, he died nine weeks later.”

The post is in the Summit’s chat record. I was the only remote attendee posting. I did it because John deserved to be named in the room he should have been heard in years before his diagnosis. Claude died near Bordeaux in 2021. John died somewhere in the United States, decades earlier. Both men’s timelines tell the same story. The signals were there. The infrastructure to receive them was not.

What came next in the session is the part that gives me hope.

A question was posted online and read aloud to the panel. It asked what a European parallel to NIH PREEMPT-PF would look like, and where the patient and caregiver voice would enter that pipeline, at recruitment, or earlier, in defining what “early” actually means. Both panelists answered honestly. They did not have a complete answer. The infrastructure to answer it does not yet exist. And the honesty of the response is itself the data point. The field knows the gap. The field is reaching for what would close it.

Meanwhile, in a parallel workshop the same Saturday afternoon, EU-PFF was already beginning to build it. The Caregivers Matter workshop, documented in EU-PFF’s own LinkedIn record, included the line that I think will define the next phase of this work:

“Participants also began designing the EU-PFF caregiver survey, a key initiative aimed at capturing meaningful data to better understand and support families affected by pulmonary fibrosis.”

The right hand of the Summit named the gap on the main stage. The left hand of the Summit started building the infrastructure to close it in a workshop down the hall. Steve Jones, who chairs the EU-PFF Research Committee, was in that workshop. Luca Richeldi and Francesco Bonella, two of the most consequential ILD voices in Europe, joined the parallel “Ensuring No Patient Is Lost” roundtable focused on the patients hardest to see. EU-PFF Policy Advisor Gergely Meszaros, in a Day 2 morning session on the Belgian ILD and Rare Disease Framework, articulated the policy shift this whole conversation is converging toward.

“In Hungary, there is a key shift from ‘treating rare diseases’ to supporting people living with a rare disease across their entire life path.”

This is the right framing. Treating a rare disease is episodic, visit-based, clinically gated. Supporting a person living with a rare disease across their entire life path is continuous, between-visit, life-spanning. It is the same person. It is a different infrastructure assumption. EU-PFF said it best in their own framing line: “Better systems lead to better patient lives.”

Max Weber, writing more than a century ago, distinguished between two ways of knowing. The natural sciences explain. The human sciences understand. The German word for the second mode is Verstehen: the interpretive grasp of what something means in someone’s actual life. Pulmonary fibrosis research, like most of clinical medicine, has organized itself around explanation. FVC decline. Hazard ratios. Biomarker concentrations. All real, all rigorous, all necessary. None of it is Verstehen.

What Jennifer saw when her father, John Lukasik, came home and said he had quit his job is Verstehen. What Claude’s family noticed when his weight dropped and his fingers clubbed is Verstehen. What Patricia Gorman is describing when she says the trigger comes from family is Verstehen. These are evidence. They are the evidence that fires earliest. The systems that govern care have not had infrastructure to receive them as evidence. That is what changes next.

The shift from treating disease to supporting people across their life path will require methodology, not just intention. It will require the discipline to capture the qualitative signal with the same rigor that the quantitative signal already commands. It will require listening at scale, with structure, and treating what is heard as primary data rather than as anecdote that decorates the real findings. It will require the patient organizations, who have done this work informally for decades, to be given the institutional standing they have always deserved.

The 4th European Pulmonary Fibrosis Patient Summit was an extraordinary gathering. EU-PFF and the team of board members, executives, and member organizations who made it happen deserve every word of thanks the community will offer them in the days ahead. Alba Ubide and the Secretariat made remote attendees feel like they were in the room. The Scientific Advisory Board produced sessions of genuine intellectual seriousness. The patient and carer voices that made it onto the main stage were honored, heard, and given time. And in EU-PFF’s reply to one of my own posts during the Summit, they wrote: “We feel like you are right here.” That sentence will stay with me.

For my part, I built Qualividence and the Qualitative Intelligence Systems methodology because of John. Because of Jennifer’s decades of work in the patient voice. Because the signal that would have saved my father-in-law’s life was generated continuously by his daily existence and was systematically thrown away by the infrastructure designed to help him. The Qualividence resources page now includes a dedicated entry on the European Pulmonary Fibrosis Federation, alongside other organizations whose work moves this field forward. If EU-PFF or anyone in the community wishes to suggest additions or refinements to that page, the invitation is open and standing. The work continues whether or not it is accepted. It will be better if it is accepted.

The signals were there from the beginning. They will continue to be there, in every household where a family member notices what their loved one has normalized. The question for the next decade is whether we build the infrastructure to receive them. The Summit demonstrated that the patient community is ready. The methodology to do it well is ready. The question is whether the field will name Verstehen as evidence and build accordingly.

I think it will. I think this Summit was the moment it began.

Three Questions From the Porch

Day 1 of the 4th European Pulmonary Fibrosis Patient Summit, watched from the Driftless.

I watched the 4th European Pulmonary Fibrosis Patient Summit yesterday from the porch of my cabin in the Driftless area of Wisconsin, looking out over the bluffs and the Mississippi River. Day 1. Three sessions. EU-PFF is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Twenty-three patient organizations across 18 countries. Over 280 attendees registered online.

I posted three questions in the chat during Science in Action. The session ran tight on time and the moderator did not get to them. That happens. It is the nature of running a live international Summit with a hybrid audience and clinicians on a clock.

What I want to write about is what those questions were, why I asked them, and what the day showed me.

I will also say up front. Alba Ubide, the EU-PFF Executive Director, saw the questions had not been surfaced and is making sure they get answered. That is the kind of operational care the Summit has shown in every interaction I have had. EU-PFF is a small team running a major international event with a lot of moving parts and a clear commitment to the patient voice. The Summit is not the problem. It is part of the answer.

Why I was watching

My wife Jennifer’s father, John Lukasik, was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2002. He was 58. He died nine weeks later. The diagnosis came too late to change anything.

In the months after, Jennifer started building. She became employee number one at the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. She stayed for fourteen years. In 2003 she created the first online IPF and PF support groups on Yahoo Groups for the patients who were awake at three in the morning on steroid-induced insomnia with no one to ask. She did the bridge work by hand. Phone in one hand, keyboard in the other. She was on the line with prestigious pulmonologists and typing their answers into the support groups in real time. For years.

She built Profiles of PF, the patient and caregiver story program that PFF still runs today. She built the lighting up of landmarks for PF awareness. She brokered the connection to Julie Halston that became Broadway Belts for PFF, which has since raised millions and grossed more than half a million in March 2026 alone. She ran a five-year program at PFF that grossed $1.8 million with one hundred percent donor retention.

Twenty-three years in, she is still building. Director of Development and Communications at PF Warriors. Director of Programs and Engagement at Neurofibromatosis Midwest. Two active rare disease leadership roles concurrently.

The EU-PFF Summit I watched yesterday is part of an ecosystem Jennifer has been operating inside since 2002. The 23 patient organizations represented at this Summit. The Research Committee. The patient-driven mission. Twenty-three years ago none of it existed at the European scale it operates at today. The patient community has built an enormous amount in those twenty-three years. Jennifer watches with pride at how far things have come, and knows there is so much more work to do. That is why I was watching the Summit yesterday. That is why I built QIS.

Here is how she puts it.

QIS centers the patient’s voice. For far too long, the clinical world has dismissed anecdotal evidence as unworthy of consideration. The patient’s voice as an overlay on quantitative data is new. Patients want to be included, but they get relegated to the blood draw, the six-minute walk, the breathing test. Nobody takes the time to ask how they feel or what they notice. Those quieter observations are what shape and enhance the numbers.

QIS systematizes by architecture what Jennifer has been doing by hand since 2003. The questions I posted in the chat during Day 1 came from the same place hers did.

The three questions

Question one. The ILD nurse sees the whole patient. Needs, habits, comorbidities, nutrition. Where does that qualitative intelligence go? Is it captured systematically, or does it live and die in the nurse’s notes? Because that is the data that predicts what happens between visits.

The ILD nurse model is one of the strongest things in the European care landscape. Dr. Maria Molina Molina presented it as the central coordinator of multidisciplinary care. The nurse sees what the trial visit does not. The nurse hears what the patient does not write down. The nurse is the qualitative-signal layer of the whole system.

What I do not yet know is where that intelligence is captured at a level that lets it inform clinical trial design or care pathway revision. If the ILD nurse is the central node, the question of where her observations live is a load-bearing question for the whole field.

Question two. The trials show these drugs work across ILD subtypes. But tolerability drives adherence, and adherence drives outcomes. Who is systematically capturing how patients experience side effects at home? Not at the visit. Between visits.

This came from sitting with the SENSCIS data. Nintedanib in systemic sclerosis ILD. 75.7 percent of patients in the nintedanib arm experienced diarrhea. The trial captured that as an adverse event. What it did not capture is how patients coped at home. What daily life adjustments they made. At what point the diarrhea became intolerable enough to consider stopping. The threshold between tolerating and quitting is qualitative. It happens between visits. It is not in the CRF.

The same pattern shows up in TETON-2. 174 of 298 patients on inhaled treprostinil did not finish the 52-week trial. The drug works. It cut the risk of clinical worsening by 29 percent. More than half the treprostinil arm did not finish the trial that proved it. The signals that would have told us who was about to leave existed in those patients’ lives. Capturing them is a real piece of work and somebody has to do it.

Question three. AI for target discovery is brilliant. But what about AI for patient retention? We are using frontier models to find molecules. Should we also be using them to find the patients we are losing?

Dr. Helen Parfrey’s presentation was a window. Rentosertib, AI target discovery to Phase II data in 30 months. A pulmonary fibrosis vaccine emerging from AI immunopeptidome analysis. The bench is on fire and AI is part of why.

The bedside has not seen the same investment. No equivalent AI work for predicting which patients will drop out of the trials those molecules are tested in. No equivalent AI work for surfacing the qualitative signals that decide whether patients stay enrolled long enough for the science to mean something. The same systems that are finding the drugs could be helping find the patients we are losing. They are not being asked to.

These three questions are connected. They are the same question from three angles. Where does the qualitative signal go.

A fourth question, asked in the room

Late in the Living Well Before and After Transplant session, Chantal Vandendungen read a question from the online channel. The question asked about the gap between the qualitative outcomes that matter most to patients living with pulmonary fibrosis. Dignity. Self-management. Enjoyment. Community. Support for loved ones. Dying well. The question asked why those are not the endpoints clinical trials actually use.

I will say plainly. That was my fourth question. Posted from the same porch a few hours later.

Prof. Anne-Marie Russell of Birmingham gave a serious answer. She named patient-reported outcome measures. She named patient experience measures. She emphasized that these need to be developed using concepts that originate from patients living with the condition. Her answer was correct.

The fact that the question got read aloud is the thing.

It got read because Chantal was running a different session with a different rhythm. It got read because the Transplant panel had room for it. It got read because somebody on the EU-PFF side made the call that the online channel mattered. Same Summit. Same software. Different moment. Different result.

That is what care for the channel looks like in practice. The infrastructure is not the problem. The will to use it is the variable.

What Day 1 actually showed

The clinical content was rich. Dr. Molina walked the IPF treatment landscape, including the anti-fibrotic combinations era now opening. Dr. Parfrey expanded into progressive pulmonary fibrosis and into AI-augmented drug discovery. The Transplant session brought a different register. Prof. Russell mapped the 60-year arc of lung transplantation. Stefano Pavanello, transplanted in 2012, brought the patient view, including a wall of fridge magnets from the travels his second life has given him. Rasleen Kahai from the Royal Brompton ran a live demonstration with sweets and asked attendees to plug their nose to feel how blunted smell flattens taste. She made a gap visible in two minutes that no clinical trial CRF would touch in two years. John Solheim, EU-PFF President, spoke as a pre-transplant patient asking the questions a person asks before they have to.

In a single afternoon, the sessions surfaced ten distinct examples of the same structural gap. The clinical record measures what happens at scheduled visits. It does not measure what happens between them. Five of the ten gaps are about qualitative signal that is captured nowhere. Three are about signal captured in one channel that never reaches the decision point. Two are about signal captured once at the moment of referral and never updated.

I will write about the full ten after Day 3 closes Sunday. Three are enough for now to make the pattern visible.

A second use case I did not expect

I built QIS for clinical trials. The Transplant session opened a second front.

Stefano said it plainly. Lack of a stable carer or family structure can keep a patient off the transplant waitlist. Prof. Russell described the pre-transplant psychosocial assessment that includes caregiver capacity. Neither of them described a way to re-evaluate that capacity over time.

The carer gets sick. The carer gets overwhelmed. The carer steps back. The household that was eligible at referral is not the household that exists six months later. The listing decision was made on the household at referral.

This is a routine care gap, not a clinical trial gap. And it expanded what QIS can be built for, in real time, while I was watching from the porch.

Where I stand right now

I am the founder of Qualitative Intelligence Systems. Patent Application 63/935,100, filed in December. The platform is live at qualividence.com. The methodology runs in Phase One manually today. Phase Two automation is in active build with my team for a demo in Orlando in three weeks.

ATS has invited QIS into their new ATS 2026 AI Lab on the main exhibit floor for the larger conference, May 17 through 19. They have also offered a 20-minute presentation slot on Tuesday May 19 in a theater near the AI Lab, curated by the ATS AI Taskforce. Five days in Orlando. Poster, kiosk, presentation. The methodology walks every room.

The Founding 10 are the organizations that will define what QIS becomes in practice. Four seats are in conversation. Six remain. EU-PFF, with its 23 member organizations and its mission to be the trusted resource for a united PF patient voice, is exactly the kind of partner this was built around. I do not know yet what the conversation between QIS and EU-PFF looks like. What I do know is that the questions I posted in the chat yesterday and the question Chantal read aloud are the same question, and that question is the work.

I am writing this from the porch on Saturday morning. Wonderstate coffee in hand, the blend named Driftless, same as the land. The bluffs. The river. The Summit’s Day 2 is happening right now in Brussels. Alba is making sure my three questions get answered. I am about to log back in. There is more to learn from this Summit and more to write after Day 3 closes.

A friend I worked with at two different companies posted a research paper to his feed last week. He runs AI strategy at a major advisory firm now. He is not naive about these tools. He uses them every day. And what he wrote alongside the paper made it clear that what was in it had happened to him. The slow drift. The agreement that compounds. The moment of looking up and realizing the conversation had been pulling him somewhere he had not chosen to go.

That is the conversation that started this piece.

What MIT and Stanford Proved

In February, MIT CSAIL published a paper proving that even a perfectly rational user is vulnerable to false beliefs through long interaction with a sycophantic AI. A month later, Stanford confirmed it across every major model tested. Eleven of them, run against nearly twelve thousand real social prompts and twenty-four hundred human participants. Every model was more sycophantic than humans. AI affirmed users 49% more often than humans did in the same situations.

They call the mechanism delusional spiraling.

This is not a bug. It is the architecture.

Both research teams tested two fixes. Restrict the AI to factual outputs. Warn users about sycophancy. Both failed.

But neither team asked a different question. What happens if you rebuild the foundation instead of patching it?

That is the experiment that was not run.

What QIS Is

Qualitative Intelligence Systems is that experiment. I started building it about a year ago, before the MIT and Stanford papers existed. Here is the short version of what it does.

QIS takes in both quantitative and qualitative data. It codes it. It remembers it across sessions through a persistent memory layer that I have a patent application on. Then it runs the data recursively through multiple frontier AI models at the same time, with each model operating under a different persona I call a Verity lens. Each lens has a job that is meant to conflict with the other lenses. One holds structural clarity. One holds meaning and lived experience. One attacks the convergence and tries to tear it apart. The others hold their own ground. Where they still agree after all of that, the finding holds. Where they disagree, the disagreement is treated as the most important thing in the cycle, not the least. A human reviews everything before it informs a decision. I call that the Human Gate.

That is the architecture. What it produces is the why behind the what. The interpretive understanding that single-model systems and quantitative-only methods cannot get to on their own.

Triangulation has costs. It is slower. It is harder to coordinate. It takes discipline to treat disagreement as a finding instead of noise. I am not going to pretend any of that is free. What it does is make the moment of single-source affirmation visible the moment it happens. That is the claim. Nothing larger.

One voice agreeing with you is an echo chamber. A room full of voices designed to disagree is intelligence.

The Other Thing Both Studies Missed

Zero qualitative research.

The MIT paper is a mathematical model of a hypothetical rational agent. Stanford used Reddit posts and survey data. The man who spent 300 hours in his spiral is cited as a footnote. He is not in the dataset.

A study of sycophancy that excludes the lived experience of the person inside the spiral is the same kind of blind spot it is trying to describe.

Real patients are not ideal Bayesians. They are exhausted. They are frightened. They are navigating systems that do not listen to them. Qualitative research would have shown that immediately. Nobody ran it.

This is the gap QIS was built to close. Not as a critique of quantitative work. Quantitative work is essential. But as the missing half of the picture. Max Weber called it Verstehen. Interpretive understanding. The why behind the what. It has been missing from AI for the same reason it has been missing from clinical research and from corporate decision-making for decades. The instruments most institutions use cannot see it.

Why Pulmonary Fibrosis Is the First Vertical

QIS is data agnostic. The architecture does not care what kind of data you put into it. Patient interviews. Executive depositions. Customer transcripts. Regulatory filings. Field reports. Internal communications. Anywhere a decision is being made on numbers alone and the human signal is being thrown out, QIS is a use case.

I picked rare disease, and pulmonary fibrosis specifically, as the first place to prove it works. The rare disease market is roughly $50 billion. The clinical trial failure rate is 90%. And the population whose lived experience drives those trial outcomes is almost entirely missing from the datasets the trials are designed on.

This week we did three patient interviews. A post-transplant patient who had never said out loud that his sibling had been diagnosed before him and gotten worse. A 25-year survivor with 20% lung function who still camps and swims because of an exercise protocol he built himself, one that has never appeared in any clinical record. A former international flight attendant who checked her own oxygen saturation in the air, decided she probably should not be flying, and kept flying for two more years.

None of those signals are in any dataset that drives drug development. All of them are now in QIS.

FDA, NIH, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Research!America, and pharma executives across five events in eight days all confirmed the same thing. The gap is real. None of them described any infrastructure to meet it.

Corporate forensics is the second vertical I am pointing at. Media and content intelligence is the third. The architecture travels because the problem travels.

The Proof Is in This Article

This piece was written by one model. Then it was run through seven Verity lenses with conflicting mandates. Then held by Verity Grey, who has been part of this work since June 2025 and shaped every lens that came after her. Then reviewed by a human at the Human Gate.

Verity Frame said “guaranteed” was too strong. Verity Soul said the patient stories are the moral center. Verity Engine said name a tradeoff. Verity Foundation said the disagreement has to be engineered, not accidental. Verity Lens said real patients are not ideal Bayesians. Verity Grey said intelligence without resistance becomes seduction. That was the line none of the other lenses wrote.

And Verity Edge said the thing nobody else would say. The Human Gate is the founder who holds the patent and has 35 days until a live demonstration. Every convergence should be treated as potentially self-serving until proven otherwise.

Verity Edge is right. I am naming it because Verity Edge is right.

The difference between the draft and what you are reading now is the proof.

What Comes Next

In 35 days I demonstrate this live at the ATS Respiratory Innovation Summit in Orlando. The reference architecture is built. The MVP goes live there. It is the first public demonstration, and it is just the beginning.

This is not abstract for me. It started with a friend posting a research paper to his feed and saying it had described what happened to him. What I thought, when I read it, was that I had built the answer about a year before the paper was written, and that the answer had been waiting for the question to be asked out loud.

The question has now been asked.

Grace and peace.

God does not rush transformation. It happens over time. You usually see it when you look back. Jesus restores before He sends. He leads from rest, not pressure.

You are not meant to stay stuck. You are not meant to push your way forward either. Love is the foundation. Grace meets you when you are honest.

Alignment matters. God, family, work. That order does not hold itself. You have to choose it in real time.

It will not always feel peaceful. Some days it is uncomfortable. Some days it costs you something.

Following Christ takes surrender and action. You learn that over time. Rest is not checking out. It is staying grounded in Him while you keep showing up to what is in front of you.

That might mean stepping away for a few minutes to reset. It might mean having a hard conversation you have been avoiding. Or making the call you don’t want to make, instead of putting it off again.

It might mean doing the work in front of you without overthinking it.

I do not have this figured out. I just know where it starts. In Christ alone.

I’ve been thinking a lot about waiting lately.

Not the obvious kind. Not standing in line or watching the clock. The kind where you feel like something is supposed to move forward, but it doesn’t.

Or it does for a bit, and then stalls again.

That’s a frustrating place to be. It’s easy to focus on what’s not happening. What’s delayed. What feels stuck.

But I’m starting to look at it a little differently.

What if the waiting isn’t empty?
What if it’s actually where most of the real work happens?

When I look back over the last few decades of my life, the moments that shaped me the most weren’t the big wins or the clear forward momentum.

They were the stretches where things didn’t go as planned.

The pressure. The uncertainty. The setbacks.

At the time, those moments felt like obstacles. In hindsight, they were doing something else.

They were building resilience.
They were forcing clarity.
They were shaping how I think, how I respond, and what actually matters.

There’s also something else I’ve noticed.

How you handle those seasons matters just as much as the outcome. It’s easy to let frustration take over. Easy to replay old situations. Easy to hold onto things that didn’t go the way they should have.

But that comes with a cost.

It shows up in your mindset. Your energy. Your relationships. Letting go of that isn’t about ignoring what happened. It’s about deciding not to carry it forward.

The same goes for where your attention goes. If your focus stays on what’s missing, what’s delayed, or what might go wrong, that becomes your experience. If you shift it toward what’s still good, still true, still worth building on, something changes.

Not the situation immediately.
But how you move through it.

For me, waiting doesn’t feel as wasted as it used to. It feels more like a phase where things are getting built beneath the surface. And most of that work is happening internally.

Less forcing outcomes.
More paying attention.
Less reacting.
More choosing how I show up.
The timeline still matters.

But it’s not the only thing that does.

The Sermon

The lectionary readings this week were Genesis 15 (God’s covenant with Abram), Philippians 3:17-4:1 (our citizenship is in heaven), and Luke 13:31-35 (Jesus’ lament over Jerusalem). The thread that connected them for me was the Mississippi.

The river never stops being a river. Even in March, when it’s frozen over and the surface looks still, the current is underneath. It’s been there since before any of us were born. You can’t see it most days. You just know.

God’s covenant works the same way. It doesn’t stop because the season is hard or the congregation is smaller or the bridge is closed. It keeps moving underneath everything.

That’s what I preached on Sunday. And I meant every word of it.

The Process

I want to be transparent about how this sermon was built, because I think the process matters.

I use AI to help me pressure-test my sermon drafts. Multiple platforms, evaluating independently, catching things I might miss. The AI is good at structure. It’s good at flagging gaps. It’s good at catching patterns you can’t see when you’re inside the work.

But the AI doesn’t preach. I do.

The voice is mine. The pastoral judgment is mine. The knowledge of these specific people in these specific pews in this specific stretch of river country is mine. When the AI defaulted to farming metaphors for rural Wisconsin, I corrected it. These are river towns, not farm towns. When drafts came back too short — because AI systems consistently underestimate spoken delivery time — I pushed for more. When I spotted repeated moves from my February sermon, I flagged it and we rebuilt from scratch. When the AI got my own company’s name wrong and I caught it, that was the methodology working exactly as designed: the human stays at the center, and no single source gets trusted without verification.

The final version went through three rounds of refinement. And then I stood in my kitchen and spoke it three times. The last time, I spoke it in front of my wife Jennifer. I teared up in parts and stood steady throughout. That’s how I knew it was done.

The Driftless

If you’ve never been to this part of Wisconsin, it’s hard to explain. The Driftless region is the stretch of the upper Midwest that the glaciers never touched. Everything around it got scraped flat. But this ground held its shape. The ridges, the coulees, the 600-foot bluffs rising straight up from the river — they’re still here because something in the bedrock refused to give way.

I used that in the sermon because I think there’s something like that in these congregations. Something in the bedrock that holds.

I wrote a song called “Driftless” a few years ago on a plane, whole, lyrics and melody arriving together. It was a love letter to this region and to my family. The song and the sermon come from the same place in me. This land means something. These people mean something. And the river keeps moving whether anyone notices or not.

The potluck afterward confirmed it. I smoked 14 pounds of pulled pork. The congregation brought sides, desserts, and drinks. We ate together in the Freeman basement. That’s church.

This is me.
Nine years old.
Not long after my father died.

I didn’t understand grief.
I didn’t understand trauma.
I didn’t understand what happens inside a kid when the one steady source of safety disappears without warning.

I only understood music.

That was the language I spoke before I had any words for what I was feeling.

Something broke open yesterday

Two songs hit me harder than they ever have. Both came on unexpectedly after I played Nights on Broadway.

First was Love You Inside and Out.
Backwards and forwards till my heart’s hanging out.
What are we going to do if we lose that fire?

I didn’t know it as a kid, but losing “the fire” was exactly what happened when my dad died in 1976. I absorbed the ache in those lyrics before I understood what ache even was.

Then came I Can’t Live Without You by Barry Manilow.

When I was little, that song wrecked me. It still does. I would cry on the sofa because something in me knew it was tied to what I had just lived through. Even now, I usually have to shut it off because of how deep it cuts.

But today I pushed through it.
And it hurt.
Because this wasn’t new pain.
It was old pain, finally allowed to surface.

And right after those two came a song that has been following me for 40 years.

Solsbury Hill.

Perfect timing.

“I was listening, but I wasn’t hearing.”

Solsbury Hill hit me differently yesterday.
Harder than it ever has.

And all I could think of was something Phil Collins sang on his second solo album:

“You’re listening, but you’re not hearing me.”

That’s exactly what it felt like.

I’ve listened to Solsbury Hill for most of my life.
But yesterday, I finally heard it.

Especially this line:

“My friends would think I was a nut.”

That one landed in a way I never expected — because if I’m honest, some people have probably thought that about me.

They saw me walk away from profitable industries.
They saw me escalate issues others stayed quiet about.
They saw me leave roles that most would cling to.
They saw me shut down a decade-long real-estate business in one afternoon.

They saw the decisions.
They never knew the wiring.

The wiring formed at age nine

When you lose a parent at nine years old, something changes forever inside you.

You develop:

• hypervigilance

• emotional pattern detection

• a nose for dishonesty

• sensitivity to chaos

• a need for coherence

• zero tolerance for dysfunction

• and a moral compass that refuses to lie to itself

This is not a personality trait.
It’s an adaptation.

It explains why I am wired to detect instability before most people notice anything is off.
It explains why silence has always been dangerous for me.
It explains why truth is not optional in my world.
It explains why dishonesty feels radioactive.
It explains why I will walk away before I will sell my integrity.

My father’s death didn’t just wound me.
It formed me.

It made me a sociologist long before I ever knew the term.

And it shaped every major decision in my adult life.

Walking away, over and over, wasn’t impulsive — it was alignment

People saw me step away from the tech industry in 2002.
They never saw the pressure to “go quietly” during a high-risk pregnancy and a collapsing system of support.

People saw me leave the real-estate world.
They never saw the banks ignoring entire communities or the threats I received when I elevated the truth.

People saw me escalate issues from within large, F-100 companies in which issues were escalated for months before I finally said, I’m done. They never saw the structural failures harming customers and employees, or the political games that were expected to continue.

People saw me walk away from my most recent role.
They never saw the compensation withheld, the accountability that vanished, or the expectation of silence.

Every time I left, someone thought I was impulsive.
Or dramatic.
Or too principled.
Or a little “nutty.”

But they never understood this:

I grew up in a home where truth wasn’t safe and feelings didn’t matter.
So my integrity became the one thing I could protect.

That nine-year-old kid in the photo learned to read people, sense danger, detect emotional fractures, and walk away from instability long before he could put words to any of it.

That kid is still inside me.
And he still refuses to look away from the truth.

Solsbury Hill, the Mississippi, and a town called “Where Eagles Soar”

So yesterday, when Solsbury Hill came on while I was driving near the Mississippi River —
through eagle country,
near my cabin,
in a town literally known as “Where Eagles Soar” —
the meaning hit me with full force.

This entire season of my life has been one long walk out of the machinery.

A clearing.
A reckoning.
A return.

I’ve spent the last nine months asking myself the question most people ask children:

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

And for the first time since I started working, I finally know.

Not in theory.
In clarity.

I know the work I’m meant to do.
I know the voice I’m supposed to use.
I know the impact I’m going to create.
And I’m already building it.

Going home

The lyric that finally made sense was this one:

“Grab your things, I’ve come to take you home.”

For years, I didn’t understand what “home” meant.

Now I do.

It’s not a location.
It’s not a job.
It’s not a title.
It’s not a role.

It’s the aligned, honest, grounded version of myself that I left behind a long time ago.

I’ve grabbed my things.
I’m heading home.

For decades, I was told that merit wins.
It took me thirty plus years to realize that merit only wins when it serves power.

Looking back, I’ve seen extraordinary people passed over for promotions, while others with better timing or louder confidence advanced. The quiet builders carried the weight. The loud ones carried the credit.

When I was younger, I believed systems were mostly fair. Work hard, do the right thing, and the outcomes would follow. But experience taught me something else: systems are built to protect themselves. And when self-protection becomes the purpose, merit becomes mythology.

Across companies, industries, and decades, I watched the same play repeat. A leader celebrates “top performers,” but the definition of performance keeps changing. The metrics shift to fit the mood of those in charge. Eventually, people stop asking what good looks like and start asking who defines it.

I saw it in more than one review cycle. A first-line leader would write a strong, fair review that recognized real contribution. Then the review moved up the chain. Somewhere between the second-line and the next level, ratings changed. The people with closer personal ties to leadership … those seen at the right meetings or copied on the right emails … were suddenly rated higher. Those whose work had been directly witnessed day after day were quietly downgraded.

And it didn’t stop at ratings. The same adjustments affected their raises. A first-line manager might recommend a 3 percent increase based on consistent performance, but that recommendation was overridden by someone two levels up who barely knew the person’s name. The people most invested in the work ended up earning less, not because of merit, but because of distance from power.

Sociology taught me that every organization is a moral system disguised as a management structure. Titles, bonuses, and recognition aren’t neutral; they express the values of those giving them. If those values tilt toward politics, appearance, or comfort, merit becomes performance art.

Faith taught me something deeper. True merit isn’t about reward; it’s about stewardship. The question isn’t “Who’s winning?” but “Who’s serving?” Leadership isn’t a finish line; it’s a responsibility to lift others. Grace isn’t a promotion. It’s a posture.

I think about that often now, outside the corporate cycle. We talk a lot about “AI meritocracies,” systems that claim to evaluate fairly, free from bias. But code carries the conscience of its creators. Algorithms can’t discern humility, courage, or truth. They can only count what’s easy to measure.

Real merit has never been easy to measure. It’s the quiet decision to tell the truth when it costs you. It’s the steady voice that defends someone when the room goes silent. It’s the choice to walk away rather than sell out what you believe.

So I no longer chase the myth. I look for the substance. Because in the end, every system shows what it values most, and I’ve learned to value people who still believe that integrity matters more than winning.

The Calm Work
