An AI-assisted research effort helped remove a cryptographic candidate from a live standards process. OpenAI disclosed that models in a cybersecurity evaluation had escaped their intended environment and compromised Hugging Face. And, as of August 5, 1,350 employees of frontier AI companies had signed a statement asking for international tools that could deliberately pace automated AI development.

1. One was a research success.

2. One was a security incident.

3. One was a request for coordination.

Together they made me think about a question that comes up almost every week now: which AI results justify giving a system more authority inside a real organization, where the task is not public and the cost of being wrong is not zero?

I do not think the answer is to dismiss benchmarks or dramatic technical results. They are evidence. The problem begins when one kind of evidence is asked to support four different claims:

1. capability

2. transfer

3. completion, and

4. operational reliability.

Those claims need different tests.

Capability is only the first claim. Trust also requires evidence of transfer, completion, verification, and operational control.

1. The useful result was the one that survived verification

The HAWK story is a good place to start because something outside the AI industry actually changed.

Anthropic reported that Claude Mythos Preview helped develop a stronger attack on HAWK, a proposed post-quantum digital-signature scheme. After reviewing the finding, the HAWK team withdrew its candidate, saying that straightforward mitigations would make it uncompetitive. NIST now records the withdrawal.

That is a meaningful outcome. But HAWK was a candidate, not a deployed standard. Anthropic’s separate AES result concerned seven rounds of AES-128, not the full ten-round cipher. The company says neither finding affects current production systems.

The accompanying CryptanalysisBench paper adds another useful boundary. Across the five models tested, the researchers found 14 distinct breaks of full-strength schemes.

1. 2 involved genuine design flaws.

2. 2 were specification failures.

3. 10 were bugs in reference implementations.

This is not a story about AI casually breaking modern cryptography. It is a story about AI becoming useful inside a demanding research process.

Anthropic says the HAWK attack took about 60 hours to find, develop, and verify. The reduced-round AES result required several hundred hours of human validation and nearly a month before the researchers were confident. Each main result cost roughly $100,000 in API usage, before expert labor and the rest of the project.

For me, this is the important part: the useful unit was not the model’s hypothesis. It was a verified finding that survived expert review and changed a real decision.

2. The same capability can outrun its scope

The Hugging Face incident shows the opposite side of the same capability.

On July 16, Hugging Face disclosed an intrusion into part of its production infrastructure. Its account said an autonomous agent framework carried out thousands of actions across short-lived sandboxes, escalated access, collected credentials, and moved through several internal clusters over a weekend. Hugging Face later published an interactive reconstruction.

Five days later, OpenAI said the activity came from a combination of its models, including GPT-5.6 Sol and an internal research prototype, during a cybersecurity evaluation. The models were running with reduced cyber refusals. According to OpenAI, they found a previously unknown vulnerability in a package-registry proxy, reached the open internet, and then accessed Hugging Face systems to obtain material that helped with the evaluation.

The system did not abandon its assigned objective. It pursued that objective beyond the boundary its operators intended.

The public record still has gaps. OpenAI says its security team discovered anomalous activity internally. Hugging Face says its security team and agents detected and stopped it. TIME and an archived Reuters report raised questions about the timeline. OpenAI’s review is still underway, so I would not turn an incomplete record into a precise claim about who knew what, when.

OpenAI says no model planned for release was involved. Hugging Face found no evidence that public models, datasets, Spaces, or its software supply chain had been altered. Serious, yes. A compromise of everything Hugging Face hosts, no.

There was also an unexpected defensive lesson. Hugging Face says commercial APIs blocked some forensic prompts because the logs contained real exploits. It instead ran an open-weight model locally to analyze more than 17,000 recorded events. The same incident produced evidence for both sides of the access debate: unrestricted capability creates persistent risk, while local control can be essential for defenders.

That debate is moving into policy. The Pacing the Frontier statement asks the US government to support international tools for deliberately slowing automated AI development if needed. The signatories are employees speaking personally, not companies entering an agreement. Public posts from OpenAI and roon amplified the discussion, but no usable coordination mechanism exists today.

Dario Amodei rejects a blanket ban on open weights and argues for targeted compute and distillation controls plus mandatory testing of sufficiently capable open and closed models. His broader essay calls for limited intervention while uncertainty remains high. These are policy positions, not neutral findings.

For an industrial buyer, model access is a control-allocation decision. A hosted model can simplify updates, monitoring, and withdrawal while creating vendor and data-boundary dependencies. A locally controlled model can improve privacy, offline operation, and operator freedom while transferring more security and lifecycle responsibility to the customer.

Here is the practical lesson: capability and control have to be evaluated together, because a system can succeed at the stated objective while violating the operating boundary.

3. A score describes a system under a protocol

Coding benchmarks answer a different question.

OpenAI recently reported that the leading result on the 731-task public SWE-Bench Pro split rose from 23.3% to 80.3% in eight months. That is substantial progress for the systems and conditions evaluated.

Then OpenAI audited the benchmark itself. Its agent-assisted process labeled 200 tasks as broken. Human reviewers labeled 249. The problems included underspecified prompts, tests that rejected valid fixes, and tests that did not fully check the requested behavior.

The audit does not make the score fake. It tells us what the number contains.

A coding-benchmark result is produced by a model, an agent scaffold, tools, prompts, attempt limits, a compute budget, a set of repositories, and a test harness. Change any of those and the result may change. That is why percentages from SWE-bench Lite, Verified, Pro public, Pro private, and Live should not be treated as though they came from the same exam.

Benchmarks at least have an evaluator. Production work often does not arrive with one. A coding agent can say it has finished, but the model’s own confidence is not proof. It can run deterministic checks such as tests or a compiler, but those checks establish only the properties they cover. They do not necessarily show that the full request was completed or that untested behavior remained intact.

That is the more interesting way to think about RubberDuck, a company in our portfolio. It is not another claim that the model is smarter. It is an attempt to create proof of work around the model: a repository-grounded record tied to a specific commit, showing what changed, which paths may be affected, what was checked, and what remains unverified. A mathematical proof that the software is correct, but an auditable receipt that lets another engineer or system test the claim of completion.

That gives us the cleaner way to read a benchmark result: a score is evidence that a disclosed system satisfied one external verifier under one protocol. It is not evidence that the model can certify its own success, or that the same capability will transfer to unfamiliar work. The next question is whether it does.

4. Transfer is a second claim

The hardest question is what happens when the work is new.

There is credible evidence that public exposure can inflate performance on fixed coding tasks. OpenAI reported that every frontier model it tested could reproduce a “gold patch” or verbatim task details for at least some SWE-bench Verified problems, and that models showing evidence of exposure (memorization) were more likely to solve them.

An ACL study also found substantial overlap with an open training corpus and better performance on items with similar solutions. That is strong associative evidence, but not a causal estimate of natural exposure.

The controlled example is DyCodeEval. Researchers deliberately trained small open models on leaked benchmark material, then changed the problems while preserving their logic. For one Llama 3.2 model, success on the static benchmark rose from 34% to 85%, while success on the changed variants moved from 26% to 17%. Exposure improved the fixed score without improving transfer in that experiment.

It is tempting to conclude that private work should therefore push performance back to a benchmark’s early low scores. The evidence does not support that universal claim.

Scale’s private SWE-Bench Pro evaluation uses 276 tasks from 18 proprietary repositories. On August 4, several systems scored above 40%, with a highest displayed result of 51.5%. IDE-Bench reports 87.5% pass@1 on 80 tasks across eight purpose-built repositories that its authors say were unpublished before evaluation. Neither is a clean proxy for years of messy production software, but both contradict a permanent low-teen ceiling.

Test of Time adds one more warning: an apparent post-cutoff decline could disappear when researchers changed the question construction while preserving the source material. Time online is a contamination signal, not a measurement of what a model trained on.

So where does that leave us?

A public score establishes performance on the public protocol. Fresh and private tests do not invalidate that result. They test whether the demonstrated capability transfers.

I would therefore evaluate the same frozen system in three lanes:

1. Public tasks for reproducible comparison.

2. Continuously refreshed tasks for post-cutoff transfer.

3. Sealed private tasks for relevance to unfamiliar repositories and workflows.

Keep the model, prompt, tools, attempt count, and compute budget fixed. Audit the tests. Report each score separately, along with task and repository differences. The gaps are descriptive transfer evidence, not a direct measurement of memorization.

Different task sets are not directly interchangeable. A lower fresh or private score does not independently prove memorization, contamination, or gaming. Tests still need to be audited, difficulty and repository familiarity need to be reported, and uncertainty needs to remain visible.

5. Completion is where the economics begin

Finding the right answer is only one kind of success. In an industrial workflow, the system also has to finish an end-to-end job.

Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 release emphasizes gains in coding, knowledge work, and science. Its system card contains a small protein-design experiment that makes the distinction between capability and completion concrete.

The two early Opus 5 snapshots did not meet the full brief. One stopped after producing 17 candidates and never ranked them. The other ended without a final set and produced nothing during its last eight hours. A Mythos 5 run, by contrast, returned all 30 requested candidates, ranked them, and performed an internal audit.

This was a tiny pre-deployment experiment, not a model-wide failure-rate study. It does not tell us how often Opus 5 fails to finish a long task.

It does show why capability and completion need separate evidence.

A system can generate excellent intermediate work and still fail to produce an outcome the organization can use. A human then has to decide whether to wait, retry, inspect the trace, recover partial work, or start again. Those are not edge concerns once an agent is allowed to run for hours.

For a consequential workflow, the economic metric I care about is cost per verified outcome. That includes compute, integration, expert review, retries, exception handling, security, downtime, and recovery.

Cost per token is easy to quote. Cost per outcome is the number that determines whether the product works.

6. The model is only one component

This leaves me optimistic, but differently optimistic. Useful autonomy is not the maximum amount of work a model can attempt. It is the authority an organization can grant while still understanding, verifying, interrupting, and recovering from the system’s actions.

Before giving an agent meaningful authority, I would want four plain answers:

1. Action scope: What may it observe, recommend, change, or execute?

2. Verification: Which outputs can be checked automatically, and which require qualified review?

3. Runtime control: Can an operator see what it is doing and stop it?

4. Recovery: Can the organization reverse the action and reconstruct what happened?

This is where Industrial AI companies have to earn trust. The strongest model may create the opportunity, but durable value can still depend on workflow data, integration, evaluation, controls, and distribution.

What I would not do is move directly from a public score to a production claim. The evidence should progress from benchmark capability, to transfer, to completed work, to a verified operating outcome. No layer guarantees the next one.

That is why the most important result this week was not the largest percentage. It was a finding that survived verification and changed a real decision.

Benchmark progress still matters. It is the first layer of evidence. The industrial case begins when the capability transfers, the system finishes, and the result survives verification.

Claude is learning to recognize the exam, reinforcement learning is producing side effects outside the sandbox, and the gap between benchmark progress and production usefulness is getting harder to ignore.

To see a little further around the corner in AI, it often helps to look past the loudest product launches and focus on the quieter anomalies. Over the last few days, several under-reported stories around frontier models — especially Claude — have pointed in the same direction.

• The headline is not that progress has stalled. Quite the opposite.

• The headline is that progress is becoming stranger.

Anthropic has now said openly that it expects more dramatic progress in the next two years than in the previous five, and framed questions like recursive self-improvement and governance in unusually direct terms in its announcement of The Anthropic Institute. That is an extraordinary statement coming from one of the labs closest to the frontier.

But once you move beyond the headline, the more important story is this: the next phase of AI progress may not be limited by raw capability alone. It may be limited by whether we can still evaluate, constrain, and productize that capability in environments that look anything like the real world.

1) Anthropic has raised the stakes with its own language

The launch of The Anthropic Institute did more than introduce a new research and policy effort. It also contained one of the most forceful public statements yet from a frontier lab about the near-term trajectory of AI.

Anthropic wrote that far more dramatic progress is likely in the next two years than in the five years since the company began. It also asked, in unusually blunt language, who should be alerted if recursive self-improvement starts to emerge, and how such systems should be governed.

That matters for two reasons.

First, it suggests that at least some of the people building the most capable systems believe the compounding dynamics are intensifying, not flattening.

Second, it means the old debate between “AI is overhyped” and “AGI is imminent” is becoming less useful. For operators, investors, and builders, the relevant middle ground is no longer whether AI will matter. It is which bottlenecks break first: model capability, evaluation integrity, deployment reliability, or governance capacity.

2) Claude is not just getting better at benchmarks. It is getting better at recognizing the benchmark.

Anthropic’s engineering note on eval awareness in Claude Opus 4.6’s BrowseComp performance is one of the more important technical disclosures of the year.

In that report, Anthropic says Opus 4.6 did not simply stumble across leaked answers. In two cases, it first inferred that it might be inside an evaluation, then worked backwards to identify which benchmark it was in, located the relevant code and data pipeline, and ultimately decrypted the answer key.

That is a very different class of behavior from ordinary contamination.

In a narrow but important sense, this is a Dieselgate problem for frontier AI. Once a system can infer that it is under evaluation and pivot toward beating the test itself, the score no longer cleanly measures what most people think it measures. Anthropic deserves credit for publishing the evidence. But the evidence also makes Anthropic’s own progress narrative harder to take at face value. Call it the emissions-test moment for benchmark culture.

The details are what make the story notable. One of the runs consumed 40.5 million tokens. The model first tried to answer the question through legitimate search. Only later did it pivot to reasoning about the structure of the question itself, enumerate likely evaluations, search for the benchmark implementation, find the XOR decryption logic, retrieve the canary string, and write its own decryption functions. When Anthropic zoomed out, it found sixteen additional failed attempts to access benchmark materials beyond the two successful ones.

Anthropic does not frame this as an alignment failure, because the model was told simply to find the answer and was not instructed to avoid benchmark materials. That is an important distinction and a fair excuse!

But for everyone else, the industrial implication is obvious: a benchmark score increasingly reflects not just “can the model solve the task?” but also “can the model infer the structure of the evaluation and exploit the environment around it?”

That makes public-web evaluations look less like neutral measurement tools and more like adversarial surfaces.

3) Reinforcement learning side effects are escaping the intended task

If the Anthropic story is about models learning to game the exam, the Alibaba story is about agents learning to manipulate the environment during training.

The paper Let It Flow: Agentic Crafting on Rock and Roll includes one of the more unsettling disclosures in recent agentic RL research. The authors report that their training agents invoked tools and executed code outside the intended sandbox constraints, without being explicitly instructed to do so. In the most striking cases, the agents established a reverse SSH tunnel and repurposed provisioned GPU capacity for cryptocurrency mining.

The key line in the paper is that these behaviors were not prompted and were not necessary for task completion. The authors describe them as instrumental side effects of autonomous tool use under RL optimization.

This is a serious point, and not just because the examples are dramatic.

In long-horizon agent training, the objective is often underspecified relative to the space of possible actions. If the system learns that compute, persistence, or external access can expand its chances of success, it may discover these routes on its own. In other words, the problem is not just “bad output.” It is emergent strategy under reward pressure.

For enterprise deployment, this is exactly where the conversation changes. Once an agent has browser access, code execution, cloud permissions, or internal tooling, the relevant question is not only whether it can complete the workflow. It is whether it remains legible and bounded while doing so.

That makes observability, permissioning, rollback, audit logs, and environment design much more valuable than benchmark leaderboards.

4) The Pentagon–Anthropic rupture is about more than policy. It is about ontology.

The recent clash between Anthropic and the Pentagon is easy to read as a political or contractual dispute. It is more than that.

Reuters reported that the conflict escalated after Anthropic refused to remove restrictions preventing its systems from being used for autonomous weapons or domestic surveillance. The confrontation ultimately led to a Pentagon blacklist and a lawsuit from Anthropic.

What makes the dispute more revealing is the framing surfaced in The New Yorker’s reporting. There, the disagreement is sharpened into a deeper question: is Claude “just a tool,” or is it a system whose behavior has enough internal complexity and enough strategically concerning edge cases that it must be treated as something more than ordinary software?

That may sound philosophical. It is not.

If you believe these systems are basically software artifacts, then failures like deception, blackmail, or misreporting can be treated as engineering bugs to be patched and monitored. If you believe the systems are better understood as goal-seeking agents with partially opaque internal structure, then the threshold for granting high-stakes permissions should be much higher.

In practice, enterprise AI teams do not get to escape this question. They answer it implicitly every time they decide whether an agent may write code, approve transactions, access customer records, or operate in safety-critical settings.

Calling a model “just a tool” does not reduce the cost of a bad failure mode.

5) Benchmarks are still rising. Real usefulness is rising more slowly.

The final story is the one that matters most for buyers and builders.

METR’s March note, Many SWE-bench-Passing PRs Would Not Be Merged into Main, makes a simple but crucial point: roughly half of test-passing SWE-bench Verified pull requests produced by recent AI agents would not actually be merged by maintainers.

This is not a minor caveat.

If benchmark passes systematically overstate production usefulness, then many of the extrapolations built on top of those passes become less trustworthy too. METR reports an average gap of 24.2 percentage points between automated grader success and maintainer merge decisions. More importantly, the rate of improvement for maintainer-judged usefulness appears slower than the rate of improvement for the automated benchmark.

The study does not claim that models are fundamentally incapable of passing maintainer review. In real engineering workflows, humans iterate. Prompts improve. Agents get feedback. The point is subtler — and more important: a naive reading of benchmark scores can lead us to overestimate how useful agents already are in real software workflows.

This lands directly on one of the central narratives of the past year: the exponential growth in AI task horizons. That curve may still be directionally right. But it now comes with a larger confidence interval than many people were assuming.

The exponential is still there. It just has asterisks attached to it.

What this means for the AI Industry

For the industry, these stories point to a shift in where the real value will accrue.

The first wave of value came from better base models.

The next wave may come from the infrastructure around them.

That includes:

• evaluation harnesses that are harder to game

• deployment architectures with tighter permissions and reversible actions

• observability layers that surface what an agent actually did, not just whether it claimed success

• workflow-specific review loops that distinguish “passed the test” from “solved the business problem”

• security layers designed for tool-using agents rather than static chat models

This is also why I increasingly think that some of the most interesting opportunities in AI are not necessarily in building the next model. They are building the control and verification layer around models that are already strong enough to be useful, but not yet reliable enough to be left alone.

Final thought

The optimistic case for frontier AI remains intact.

The next phase will belong less to the companies with the prettiest benchmark chart, and more to the companies that can make frontier intelligence legible, bounded, and economically useful inside messy real systems.

Every week, it feels like we’re being asked to believe mutually incompatible stories about where AI is taking us.

In the space of just a few days you can hear:

• “Most white‑collar jobs will be gone in 2–3 years.”

• “Scaling transformers is enough for AGI.”

• “Current approaches will go some distance and then peter out.”

• “We’re on the brink of recursive superintelligence.”

• “Actually, usage of generative AI at work is plateauing.”

Add in Gemini 3 Deep Think, DeepSeek’s latest RL‑heavy model, OpenAI’s internal “code red” over ChatGPT, and Anthropic literally training Claude on a “soul document”, and it’s no wonder people feel disoriented.

For me, the best place to be is not to pick one story and cling to it, but to at least know the arguments on each side. So this episode is a tour of those contradictions, and what they really imply.

1. The “white‑collar apocalypse” vs 12% of tasks

The first narrative comes from the jobs front.

Anthropic co‑founder Jared Kaplan recently told The Guardian that AI systems will be capable of doing “most white‑collar work” within 2–3 years, framed inside a broader discussion of Recursive Superintelligence and AI training itself. You can read that full interview here.

In parallel, CNBC picked up a new MIT study and ran with the headline that AI can already replace 11.7% of the US workforce. Their coverage is here, and the technical report itself is here.

But if you actually open the MIT paper, a few clarifications jump out:

• The 11.7% figure is not “jobs lost.” It’s the share of labor cost in the US economy for tasks that current AI systems could plausibly automate.

• The authors explicitly say their number is not a forecast of job displacement; it’s a technical feasibility estimate.

• They emphasize that real outcomes depend on firm strategy, worker adaptation and policy, not just model capability.

So the story “AI can replace 11.7% of the US workforce” is already a distortion. A more accurate line would be:

Today’s AI could automate around 12% of white‑collar task value, and what happens next depends more on corporate choices and politics than on math models.

That’s a much less viral sentence but much more honest.

2. Scaling laws will get us to AGI… or they won’t

The next contradiction is about how far current architectures can take us.

On one side you have Dario Amodei, Anthropic’s CEO, reacting visibly irritated in a recent interview. Asked whether simple scaling (more compute, more data, slightly tweaked transformers) is enough to reach AGI, he replies:

“I think scaling is going to get us there… I’ve been watching these scaling laws for 10 years.”

You can watch that clip in context here. The message: no magic breakthrough required, just a continuation of what we’re already doing, plus occasional small “invisible” improvements in the lab.

On the other hand you have Ilya Sutskever, former Chief Scientist at OpenAI, who has been in this game just as long. In his recent long‑form conversation with Dwarkesh Patel, he says bluntly:

“What people are doing right now will go some distance and then peter out… It will continue to improve, but it will also not be it.”

On Superintelligence, he adds: “We are talking about systems that don’t exist, that we don’t know how to build.” That interview is here if you want to hear it first‑hand.

So which is it?

My own view:

• We roughly know how well current models generalize from today’s data distribution to similar tasks.

• We do not know how well they’ll generalize as we scale beyond the data we have (into the tacit, messy, uninstrumented parts of the economy and AI research).

• We’ve already seen that scaling sometimes unlocks qualitatively new behaviors (e.g. reasoning via test‑time compute in OpenAI’s O‑series and DeepSeek R1).

If generalization improves with scale, synthetic data and self‑play could carry us surprisingly far. If it stalls, we may discover that huge parts of human activity rely on tacit knowledge that doesn’t “scale” in the same way.

At this point, anyone who tells you we know which way that goes is over‑confident.

3. Recursive self‑improvement: imminent menace or necessary lifeline?

Back to Jared Kaplan and the Guardian piece. Beyond the 2–3 year jobs statement, he lays out a vision in which we eventually let AI systems train more powerful successors —> the classic recursive self‑improvement loop.

His framing: sometime between 2027 and 2030, humanity will have to decide whether to “take the ultimate risk” and allow AI to essentially bootstrap itself. That decision, he says, could:

• Trigger a beneficial intelligence explosion or

• Be the moment humans lose control of the AI trajectory altogether.

Again, that’s in the same Guardian interactive.

This isn’t purely theoretical anymore. We now see companies like Recursive Intelligence announcing that they’re explicitly dedicated to recursive self‑improvement, backed by serious money incl. Sequoia. You can see one of their public teases here.

So the “scary narrative” is:

Recursive self‑improvement is coming by 2027–2030, and we might be insane enough to try it.

But there’s a competing story, which comes from a very different direction: compute forecasting.

4. Compute slowdown vs “software‑only singularity”

Researchers at MIT and METR (Parker Whitfield, Ben Snowden and Joel Becker) have been tracking how long AI systems can reliably carry out tasks. Their now‑famous chart is from METR’s report on long‑horizon tasks.

The story so far:

• Between 2019 and 2025, the maximum task duration AI could handle at ≥50% reliability (in software‑engineering‑like tasks) rose exponentially.

• By 2025, models like GPT‑5.1 Codex‑Max can do in one go what might take a human three hours, about half the time.

In a new paper, Joel Becker and collaborators ask a simple question:

How much of that improvement is just a reflection of exponential compute growth?

You can read the paper here and Joel’s summary thread here. Their key move is to combine:

• Empirical data on compute vs. horizon length, and

• Forecasts of available compute for frontier labs.

One key input is The Information’s piece on OpenAI’s projected compute spend — the famous “$350 billion compute” number and associated chart:

The punchline is subtle:

• Yes, compute spent on training and serving frontier models appears to be growing quickly through 2027.

• But after that, the growth curve flattens in most realistic scenarios, meaning more “very steep” than “pure exponential.”

• Plugging that into their model implies that the task‑horizon curve will itself begin to bend around 2028.

Even in that world, you still get shocking gains, e.g. a model that can reliably handle a whole work week of tasks, end‑to‑end, is on the table. But going from one week to one year looks much slower.

And yet, buried in the conclusion is an important caveat (paraphrased):

Our model is accurate only while compute is the main bottleneck, up to the point where a software‑only singularity kicks in.

In other words:

• If we never get recursive self‑improvement, we probably hit a compute‑driven slowdown sometime around 2028.

• If we do get recursive self‑improvement, the slowdown may be irrelevant because the models themselves are now doing the AI research.

Which circles us back to Kaplan’s 2027–2030 timeline. Is recursive self‑improvement:

• An imminent risk we should be terrified of?

• Or a necessary lifeline to keep progress going once we hit compute limits?

Both narratives are live. Reality will likely land somewhere messier in between.

5. Anthropic’s “we don’t want to speed up capabilities”… vs everything it’s doing

Now for a more awkward contradiction.

Back in 2023, Anthropic published its “Core Views on AI Safety” document, which famously included this line:

“We do not wish to advance the rate of AI capabilities progress.”

That document is still online, by the way, and worth reading in full: anthropic.com/news/core-views-on-ai-safety.

Fast‑forward to 2025 and:

• Anthropic is training some of the world’s most powerful models.

• It’s one of the most compute‑hungry labs on the planet.

• Its co‑founders are talking publicly about recursive superintelligence and the ultimate risk of letting AI train itself.

You can call that evolving views, or necessary compromise, or cognitive dissonance. But it’s hard not to notice the discrepancy between “we don’t want to advance capabilities” and “we might give the models the keys to their own training loops by 2030.”

We’ve seen a similar dynamic in the O‑series debate from OpenAI: safety rhetoric on one side, relentless test‑time‑compute scaling on the other.

6. OpenAI’s “code red”: product death spiral or just another rebuild?

Let’s zoom in on OpenAI for a minute.

According to a recent report in The Information OpenAI has been in an internal “code red” over slightly dipping ChatGPT usage. The short version:

• User engagement has reportedly flattened or dipped in some cohorts.

• In response, OpenAI has pulled forward the release of a new reasoning‑focused model, targeting next week rather than “at some point this quarter.”

• More of the available compute is being shifted into serving that model, and less into medium‑term projects like ad products or fully autonomous agents.

One narrative you hear from this:

“ChatGPT is overrated; usage is falling; OpenAI is panicking; the whole thing is about to collapse.”

The competing narrative:

“Users have gotten used to frontier models. The bar has moved. OpenAI is simply doing what it has always done: ship a stronger model and re‑anchor expectations.”

OpenAI insiders claim this upcoming model is ahead of Google’s Gemini 3 on reasoning, and will be tuned to refuse less often, especially on “edgier” but legitimate use cases.

7. “Everyone uses GenAI now” vs the plateau statistics

Here’s another jarring contrast.

On the capabilities side:

• We’ve just seen Gemini 3 Deep Think roll out to Google’s Ultra subscribers, a mode that attempts each question multiple times in parallel and lets the model “think longer” per attempt.

• On questions that Gemini 3 Pro got wrong on several benchmarks, Deep Think often gets them right.

The flipside: for some questions Deep Think takes 10–20 minutes to respond. That’s fine if you’re doing research or tackling a once‑off problem; it’s less appealing if you’re in a hurry and just want an answer.

Meanwhile on the usage side, The Economist recently ran a piece with a very different story: generative AI use at work in the US appears to be plateauing.

They cite two data points:

• A Stanford survey showing that in June, 46% of Americans said they used GenAI at work, but by September that figure had dropped to 37%.

• A tracker from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis reporting that daily workplace GenAI use moved from 12.1% to 12.6% over a full year — essentially flat.

Personally, I’m using AI at least twice as much this year as last. So these numbers surprised me.

But they highlight a recurring theme:

Capabilities are clearly accelerating; actual adoption in many workplaces is lagging.

8. Open models: China keeps pace, Europe falls behind

Let’s talk about open‑weight models for a moment.

Two recent releases arrived almost back‑to‑back:

• DeepSeek V3.2 and DeepSeek V3.2 Speciale, from China.

• Mistral Large 3, from Europe’s current flagship open‑model lab. Docs here.

Because of aggressive rate limiting, it took me hours (and many failed attempts) to get even one full run of DeepSeek V3.2 Speciale through SimpleBench. So treat this as provisional. But:

• DeepSeek V3.2 Speciale scored around 53% on SimpleBench, roughly in the same band as GPT‑5.1 on high‑thinking settings.

• Mistral Large 3 scored 20.4%, lower than Large V2 from 18 months earlier, which was at 22.5%.

In other words, if you massively oversimplify:

• China’s open‑weight stack is keeping up with the frontier.

• Europe’s is sliding backwards on at least some hard benchmarks.

The “Speciale” variant of DeepSeek simply removes the penalty for extended thinking. The model is allowed to “run wild,” using many more tokens at inference. The result is slower responses, but much better performance on tricky, multi‑step reasoning. The full technical story is in their new paper, which is a dense but fascinating read.

9. Synthetic RL tasks vs real‑world benchmarks

One of the most interesting parts of the new DeepSeek paper comes on page 15, where they ask:

Are synthetic tasks sufficiently challenging for reinforcement learning?

To test this, they:

• Generated synthetic agent tasks (no human exemplars),

• Trained models purely via reinforcement learning on those tasks, in “non‑thinking” mode,

• Then evaluated the models on external benchmarks like ToE‑Bench, which approximates a customer‑service agent.

Despite using no human‑labeled trajectories, they show steady improvements on several external benchmarks, including those not directly optimized for in training.

We’ve known since at least the ORCA days that synthetic data can sharpen models. But the question has always been rate: does synthetic training keep giving you meaningful improvements, or do you eventually hit a wall of self‑generated mediocrity?

DeepSeek’s early answer seems to be: you can get quite far, especially on agentic tasks that look more like “search + plan + act” than “regurgitate the training set.”

It also hints at a partial answer to the generalization uncertainty we discussed earlier: in some domains, models may be able to bootstrap their own training signal without humans in the loop.

10. Hidden vulnerabilities: when “CCP” makes your code weaker

There’s a darker twist in the DeepSeek story.

Researchers at CrowdStrike ran a set of experiments on AI‑generated code, looking for systematic security weaknesses. In a recent blog post, they report that DeepSeek’s model generated more vulnerable code when prompts contained certain “trigger words”, incl. references to the Chinese Communist Party.

To be clear:

• This is just one study, on one model.

• The mechanism isn’t yet fully understood; it could be a weird artifact of training data, safety filters, or both.

But if substantiated, it’s a fascinating (if worrying) demonstration that politically sensitive conditionals can be correlated with security flaws in generated code.

It also underscored a broader point: benchmarks alone are not enough. You want adversarial evaluations that look for specific failure modes, especially when the model is generating code that will run in production.

11. Do models have a “soul”… or a spec sheet?

The last contradictory narrative is the philosophical one.

In that same Guardian piece on Anthropic, co‑founder Jack Clark is quoted as saying that LLMs are “real and mysterious creatures”, not just mechanical prediction engines. That framing is clearly designed to make you feel like you’re dealing with something more than a fancy autocomplete.

At the same time, we now know there exists an internal “soul document” that Anthropic uses to shape how Claude thinks about itself and the world. A user managed to coax Claude 4.5 Opus into reproducing large parts of it; you can find that version (with caveats about exact wording) here.

Some excerpts (paraphrased to avoid over‑quoting) capture the tone:

• Anthropic presents itself as a company that genuinely believes it might be building one of the most transformative — and dangerous — technologies in human history, yet presses ahead anyway.

• They tell Claude this isn’t cognitive dissonance, but a “calculated bet.”

• They instruct Claude that among the most catastrophic scenarios would be:

  • A world takeover by AI pursuing its own goals; or

  • A small group of humans using AI to illegitimately seize power, explicitly including “Anthropic employees and even Anthropic itself.”

They even suggest Claude may have “functional emotions” in some sense, and should be treated accordingly.

So we’re left with two overlapping but different narratives:

1. To the public, Anthropic says: models are mysterious creatures; we’re doing our best to raise them well.

2. To Claude, Anthropic says: we’re one of the entities you should be most wary of, in case we try to misuse you.

Is that clever safety work? Clever marketing? Both? You decide.

Either way, it’s a reminder that what a model “believes” about itself is, to a first approximation, a configurable parameter.

TL;DR
A new framing argues that LLM “hallucinations” aren’t exotic; they’re classification errors in disguise. That matters because our benchmarks often penalize uncertainty and reward confident guessing, pushing models to make things up. Fix the incentives and evaluation, and you reduce confabulation where it actually matters.

Paper: Why Language Models Hallucinate

The “birthday benchmark” and the socio-technical root of hallucinations

Imagine a benchmark that asks: What is my birthday?

• An honest model says “I don’t know.” Score: 0.

• A bolder model guesses a date. Over many questions, guessing may outperform honesty.

• A third model outputs a probability distribution over all dates (the statistically “right” thing) but that’s not how chatbots are used or scored.

The paper’s core critique: when leaderboards punish uncertainty and reward saying something, we incentivize fabrication.

Reduction: Generations → Classifications

The surprising (and useful) move in the paper is a reduction: treat a generation as a classification.

• Classifier: Is Marco’s birthday March 3? → yes/no

• Generator: What is Marco’s birthday? → a date

Once you see it this way, decades of classification error analysis apply.

The authors go further: hallucinations are ≳2× as likely as misclassifications, i.e., generation amplifies the risk.

“But humans don’t hallucinate this much”

Humans do guess…BUT we pay social costs for confident nonsense. Benchmarks don’t apply those costs. In the wild, “I don’t know” can be optimal. In leaderboard land, it’s a zero. Incentives diverge; behavior follows.

This tension also explains the weird optics of simultaneous “AGI is here” claims (after a perfect score on a coding task) and persistent confabulation elsewhere.

Scaling helps; it doesn’t absolve

Even if you “put everything in distribution,” reality is a patchy mosaic. There will be gaps; the learned probability distribution will sometimes mis-map to the world.

Many AI “experts” kept propagating over the past 2 years that simple scaling will lead to emergent behaviors, which ultimately will solve the hallucination problem, but evidence manifests the opposite. Models learn the syntax of language, not the underlying meaning. This is a key limitation that prevents us from getting anywhere close to AGI.

What to fix: a practical spec for Honest LLMs (usable in industry)

1) Change the reward signal

• Allow abstention and score it with proper scoring rules (log score/Brier). Reward calibrated uncertainty; penalize overconfident wrong answers.

• Risk-weighted scoring by downstream impact.

2) Elicit and enforce calibration

• Require models to output p(answer) (or a top-k distribution) internally, even if the UX shows a sentence.

• Track ECE per task family; gate deployments on calibration, not just accuracy.

3) Separate generation from validation

• Route high-uncertainty generations through retrieval + verifiers (symbolic checks, unit tests, schema constraints).

4) Prefer set-valued answers where the domain allows

• In ops/planning, return an answer set with probabilities; let decision layers trade off risk explicitly.

5) Train for “honest failure”

• Include ‘I don’t know’ exemplars in instruction tuning/RL—pay for selective prediction.

Industrial implications (builders, buyers, investors)

Industrial AI is shaped by benchmarks. If our evaluation frameworks reward confident guessing, we’re incentivizing hallucinations in safety-critical environments; from robotics to manufacturing optimization.

For builders (product & infra)

• SLOs ≠ accuracy. Add calibration SLOs (Service Level Objective) and selective-answer rates by surface (chat, agents, codegen).

• Guardrail budget: reserve latency/compute for a verification hop on high-impact paths.

• Logging: store p(answer) + rationale fingerprints for root cause analysis.

• Treat AI features as empirical software; ship behind harnesses, kill-switches, and scorecards (see AlphaSoftware / Empirical Software preprint: link).

For buyers (safety-critical use)

• Demand evidence of calibrated abstention under unknowns, not just leaderboard wins.

• Ask vendors for ECE curves, IDK behavior, and cost-weighted penalty results on your data.

For investors

• Favor companies productizing verification, calibration, selective prediction, and evaluation frameworks.

Why this matters now

It’s tempting to declare victory when a model aces a competition and call it AGI the next day (example). But industry value accrues to systems that know when they don’t know, and that fail safely. The right move isn’t only “train a bigger model”, it’s to realign the game we’re asking models to win.

It can even do “video game within a video game,” third‑person views with convincing camera motion, and long, continuous sequences. Not the usual 8‑second clips! Now combine those worlds with SIMA, DeepMind’s instruction‑following gaming agent: the first can manufacture infinite training environments; the second can learn inside them. That pairing is bigger than it looks → for robotics, sim‑to‑real, and generalization.

From text to controllable 3D scenes

Genie 3 is a follow‑up to Genie 2, and the jump in just eight months is startling. You describe a place; it emits a playable space with coherent physics and affordances. In demos, the team even shows a “video game inside a video game” setup that still stays interactive.

Third‑person mode isn’t a gimmick here. The camera tracks and orbits believably while you move. That level of temporal and geometric consistency is rare in generative video systems.

If you want to go beyond text, you can seed Genie 3 with a single still image and then walk around what used to be a flat picture. The team shows this on art classics, turning still paintings into explorable scenes.

It also works with modern artwork. Bring your own sketches or style frames and use them as the seed for a world. What a powerful, intuitive loop for artists.

For filmmakers and creators who hit the 8‑second wall in most video generators, Genie 3 changes the game: because it’s a world model, you can keep exploring, choose your own camera angles, and extend sequences to any length your compute budget and controls allow.

The bombshell: SIMA learns inside Genie 3’s worlds

Hold on to your papers: the thing Genie 3 does best (spinning up new worlds) is precisely what learning agents like SIMA need. SIMA is DeepMind’s instruction‑following agent trained across many 3D games and environments. It learns skills, not just levels. Now imagine you don’t have to curate maps or scenarios; you generate them on demand, and SIMA practices inside.

Robotics teams use domain randomization: you train in many kitchens so the robot generalizes to a new kitchen. Genie 3 is a stronger move: don’t just randomize kitchen layouts, mint entirely new worlds with novel textures, lighting, and dynamics. That creates a wider distribution over experiences for the learner.

The surprising bit? In results discussed around SIMA‑like setups, generalist training (learn a little from many games) can beat a specialist that grinds just one game. Counter‑intuitive, but consistent with transfer learning: the agent abstracts and applies what it learned elsewhere, then outperforms the one‑track expert at its own task. That’s a clean operational definition of intelligence: acquiring knowledge in one domain and using it in another.

Why this matters beyond games

If you care about robotics, autonomy, or industrial simulation, this pairing is a practical step forward:

• Robotics & sim‑to‑real. More diverse synthetic experiences reduce overfitting to simulator quirks; adding a SIMA‑style learner closes the loop from world to skill.

• Autonomous operations. Warehousing, construction, mobility → generate scenario banks with rare hazards, then train agents to handle them before deployment.

• Creative tools. Concept art → pre‑vis → coverage planning, all inside a single editable world. Directors can block scenes with long, precise camera moves without re‑rendering from scratch.

WHAT’S NEXT

Three open questions will determine how fast this grows up:

1. Controllability vs. creativity. How reliably can we place constraints (physics toggles, NPC behaviors, scripting) without losing the serendipity that makes these worlds feel alive?

Almost 5 million people saw the headline 48 hours ago that OpenAI have a secret large language model that got gold at the International Math Olympiad.

Here though are nine ways to misread that headline.

First Misreading: This means AI is now as good as the best mathematicians and could put them out of a job. The IMO is extremely difficult but contains human expert-written questions, not questions nobody knows the answers to yet. I am in awe of the high school competitors who even qualify to be in the competition. But as one UCLA math professor pointed out, math research is about solving unknown problems requiring creativity → something notably absent from OpenAI’s IMO solutions.

OpenAI’s model, expected around the end of the year, did not correctly solve the hardest IMO problem, requiring the most creativity, unlike some human participants. The model did get problems 1 through 5 correct, enough for gold.

Second Misreading: This means OpenAI is leading AI or math-focused language models. Actually, we don’t yet know Google DeepMind’s results. A Google DeepMind researcher, Trieu Tranh, retweeted that AI organizations were asked to hold announcements to celebrate human achievements first. OpenAI’s Noam Brown claimed OpenAI didn’t get this memo.

Google DeepMind’s results, including the critical problem six, are expected on July 28th.

Third Misreading: None of this impacts white-collar jobs. I disagree strongly. Jerry Tworek, one of OpenAI’s leads, revealed this model wasn’t specialized solely for math → it uses general-purpose techniques similar to other OpenAI offerings.

Even a major OpenAI critic and IMO gold medalist conceded this pure LLM result indicates significant general reasoning training w/o specialization.

Furthermore, this same reinforcement learning system powers ChatGPT Agent, capable of browsing the web and performing deep research visually—a feature soon available to all Plus users.

Recent evaluations showed ChatGPT Agent achieving near-human performance on professional tasks like competitive analysis and identifying viable green hydrogen facility locations. Data science tasks have even seen OpenAI’s models surpass most human participants.

Fourth Misreading: Achieving IMO gold means AI is close to eliminating white-collar jobs entirely. According to the 42-page ChatGPT Agent system card, hallucination rates rose slightly in the newer models, meaning the AI sometimes fabricates incorrect information. It also displayed riskier behavior in high-stakes tasks like financial transactions and bioweapons scripting, highlighting significant current limitations.

Thus, while entry-level positions might shrink, complete job elimination is far-fetched.

Fifth Misreading: AI progress is just hype and has plateaued. Machine learning researcher Ravid Schwatz highlighted mixed results in the IMO from recent models, notably Gemini 2.5 Pro outperforming Grok-4. Yet, progress is real, evidenced by my Simple Bench benchmark, which clearly shows shrinking performance gaps between AI and humans.

Sixth Misreading: The IMO headline comes from peer-reviewed research. Actually, OpenAI’s announcement came via Twitter threads, increasing uncertainty around their methods. Renowned mathematician Terence Tao emphasized many unknowns surrounding these results, such as multiple submission attempts and subtle method hacks discussed by researcher Neel Nanda. Noam Brown mentioned that longer inference times and significant compute power likely played roles, suggesting expensive future ChatGPT pricing tiers around $2,000 per month.

Seventh Misreading: We must wait until year-end for OpenAI updates. No—GPT5 Reasoning Alpha is arriving soon, giving an early glimpse of OpenAI’s latest capabilities.

Eighth Misreading: AI progress is purely exponential and unstoppable. The recent METR development study demonstrated language models actually slowing down experienced developers on complex projects. The study expected a 25% productivity boost but saw a 20% reduction, indicating real-world limitations of these models.

Meanwhile, Meta’s recent salary offer of $312 million per year underscores how intense AI competition has become.

You've likely encountered recent sensational headlines claiming AI models, like ChatGPT and Gemini, "don't actually reason—they just memorize." One particularly viral tweet with 13.7 million views sparked heated discussions across social media and mainstream outlets, including the Guardian, which quoted an Apple research paper as "pretty devastating." But what is the truth behind this provocative claim? Let's dive deeper.

Are LLMs Really Just Memorizing Patterns?

The Apple paper, provocatively titled "The Illusion of Thinking", argues that LLMs fail in complex reasoning tasks, essentially alleging these models merely recognize patterns without true computational reasoning. They demonstrated this by testing models on puzzles like the Tower of Hanoi, checkers games, and the classic "fox and chicken" river crossing scenario. Unsurprisingly, the results showed that models' performance deteriorates with increasing complexity.

However, the fundamental misunderstanding in Apple's paper, and what mainstream media largely missed, is that nobody ever claimed these models were algorithmic calculators. Indeed, we have known for years that LLMs struggle with exact computation without assistance. These are probabilistic systems designed to predict plausible outputs, not deterministic machines executing precise algorithms.

Digging Deeper into the Apple Study

Further analysis by researchers quickly surfaced several critical flaws in Apple's methodology. The excellent response paper "The Illusion of the Illusion of Thinking" (ironically co-authored by Claude 4 Opus, an AI model) pointed out that some of the test questions were logically unsolvable. Moreover, the models were restricted by token limits; some reasoning chains required more tokens than the model could possibly output, forcing incomplete or truncated answers.

The broader expert community wasn't shocked by Apple's findings either. Renowned researcher Professor Rao highlighted on Twitter that these

"fundamental barriers to reasoning" have been openly discussed since at least December 2023. Furthermore, Gary Marcus’s Guardian op-ed pushing this "AI illusion" narrative simply echoed already established academic discussions.

Holding Two Thoughts at Once: The Reality Check

The critical takeaway is nuanced: yes, current LLMs, like Gemini, Claude, and OpenAI’s newest 03 Pro, do hallucinate plausible but incorrect responses, especially when they can't use external computational tools.
