The Fourth Door

“How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?” The man was speechless. Then the king told the attendants, “Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

I want to say this happened to a friend of mine. That’s how these stories usually start, isn’t it, safe, at arm’s length, something that happened to somebody else so you can sleep after reading it. But it happened to me, on the second Saturday of March, and I haven’t slept right since, so I’m not going to lie to you about the distance. I was there. I am still, in some sense, there.

I need you to understand the specific kind of drunk I was, because it matters. Not fun-drunk. Not stumbling-and-laughing drunk. I was past all of that, into the flat, glassy place where the floor stops being reliable and your own name feels like a word you’re translating from a language you used to know. I’d started at seven with Marcus and Dana at a rooftop bar that closed early. Then a dive on Lispenard Street. Then somewhere with foam on the walls that Dana swore was “the spot,” which it was not. By midnight Marcus had peeled off with some girl and Dana had gone home to be sick in the comfort of her own bathroom, and I was alone, the way you get alone in a city at 1 a.m. when everyone you started the night with has quietly, one by one, made the smarter choice.

I don’t remember deciding to keep going. That’s the thing about that specific drunk, decisions stop being events you experience and start being things that have already happened to you, discovered after the fact, like finding a bruise.

The first club turned me away at the door. A woman with a clipboard and a headset looked at me for exactly one second before she said, “Not tonight, hon,” in the practiced, kind-but-final voice they must teach in some school for people who guard velvet ropes. I remember being outraged. I remember explaining, at some length, that I was a reasonable person having a reasonable night, and I remember her not looking at me again, already scanning the line for someone else, someone who still had wedding clothes on, so to speak. Someone who still looked like they belonged at the feast.

The second club didn’t even let me finish crossing the street toward it. A bouncer the size of a doorway itself put one hand flat against my chest, not rough, just final, like a period at the end of a sentence, and said, “Not here, man. Try somewhere else.”

Try somewhere else. I want you to sit with that phrase for a second, because it’s going to matter later. It’s the kind of thing people say without thinking, a throwaway kindness, a way of passing you along instead of dealing with you. Try somewhere else. Somewhere else will have you. I wasn’t somewhere else’s problem, I was theirs, until I wasn’t, and then I was somewhere else’s, and somewhere else didn’t want me either.

By the third rejection I’d stopped being outraged and started being afraid, in the small, stupid way you’re afraid when you’re drunk and alone and the night has started to feel less like a sequence of bars and more like a machine methodically spitting you out of every warm lit room in the city, one gasket at a time. The third bouncer didn’t even really look at me. He was already shaking his head before I’d finished walking up, like my not belonging had preceded me, had arrived at the door before I did and warned him.

I want to be honest about something. I don’t think, in any of these moments, that anything supernatural had happened yet. I think I was just a very drunk man at 2 a.m. who smelled like a spilled drink and looked like exactly the kind of liability no doorman gets paid enough to let inside. I think the horror of that night built itself out of completely mundane humiliations, the way a lot of horror does, not a monster leaping out of the dark, but the dark just quietly, patiently getting bigger around you while the lit places get smaller and further apart and less interested in you existing near them.

It was somewhere around the fourth club, I don’t even remember its name, just a red door with brass fittings, a line of people who all seemed to be laughing at a joke I hadn’t heard the setup to, that I noticed the man in the long coat.

He wasn’t in line. He wasn’t near the door. He was across the street, under the broken half of a streetlamp, and he was watching the club the way you’d watch a fire you were waiting to see whether it would spread. I only clocked him because when the fourth bouncer turned me away, gently this time, almost apologetically, “Sorry, bud, we’re at capacity for the kind of night we’re having”, I turned to leave and he was suddenly directly in my sightline, like the street had rearranged its geometry to put him there.

He didn’t look dangerous. That’s important. He looked like a man in his fifties in a long dark coat that didn’t match the weather, the kind of coat that belongs to a different decade or a different climate, unseasonable in a way I couldn’t place because my brain was too busy sloshing around in my skull to do real analysis. He had the stillness of someone who had been standing in that exact spot for a very long time, possibly since before the street existed.

“Rough night,” he said. Not a question.

I told him something, I don’t remember what, probably self-pitying and profane. He nodded like he’d heard it a thousand times, in a thousand accents, from a thousand men exactly as sorry for themselves as I was.

“They keep saying try somewhere else,” he said. “Don’t they.”

I remember going cold at that, despite the alcohol, despite the warm reptile-brain buzz that alcohol wraps around you like a coat of its own. Because yes. Yes, that was exactly what they kept saying, in almost those words, at every single door, and I hadn’t told him that.

“There’s one more place,” he said. “Down that way.” He tilted his head toward a street I didn’t recognize, which should itself have been a warning, I’d lived in that neighborhood two years, I knew every street, every bodega, every rat-run alley shortcut, and this street he was gesturing toward didn’t correspond to anything I could place, even accounting for how the city rearranges itself when you’re this far gone. “They let everybody in, down there. Doesn’t matter what state you’re in. Doesn’t matter what you’re wearing.” He looked, very deliberately, at my shirt, which I realized with a distant, drunk kind of shame had a wine stain shaped almost exactly like a continent I couldn’t name.

“They don’t care what you’re wearing?” I said. I want you to understand how much sense this made to me at the time. How, in the specific mathematics of being drunk and rejected four times in a row, a place that will let anyone in regardless of how they look is not a red flag, it is the single most beautiful sentence in the English language.

“Not even a little,” he said, and something in the way he said it, too smooth, too rehearsed, a phrase worn down like a step in old stone from ten thousand feet passing over it, should have told me everything. It didn’t. I was too drunk to stand up straight, let alone parse subtext.

I followed him.

I need to describe the walk honestly, because I’ve turned it over in my memory so many times since that I’ve probably worn my own grooves into it, added things, embellished it into something cleaner and more frightening than it actually was, the way trauma likes to iron out the boring parts and leave you with only the sharp ones. What I remember: the street got quieter with every block, not gradually but in distinct steps, like someone turning a dial, first the traffic noise dropped out, then the wind, then even the specific electrical hum that cities always have and you never notice until it’s gone. I remember the streetlights getting further apart, and dimmer, until eventually they weren’t really streetlights so much as suggestions of light, dim orange smears that didn’t seem to illuminate the pavement so much as remind you the pavement was theoretically there.

I remember the man in the coat never looked back at me, not once, and yet somehow I never lost him, never had to hurry, as though the distance between us was fixed by something other than our actual footsteps.

And I remember arriving at a door.

It wasn’t attached to a building, or at least, not one I could see clearly, my drunk eyes kept sliding off the structure around it the way your eyes slide off the sun, an instinctive refusal to look directly at something that would hurt to focus on. Just a door. A plain, dark wooden door, no sign, no line, no bouncer, no velvet rope, nothing to mark it as a place anyone would want to go except for the sound coming from behind it, music, muffled, a bassline you could feel more than hear, and under it, laughter, dozens of voices, warm and inviting, the exact sound every closed door of that entire long humiliating night had promised and failed to deliver.

“In you go,” the man in the coat said, and stepped aside…

Threadbare by Mark Watson

I want to say I noticed the buttons because I’m observant. That would be a comfortable lie. The truth is I noticed them because I’d started, somewhere in the last month, sleeping badly enough that I’d taken to lying awake doing the kind of pointless mental inventory insomniacs do, counting ceiling tiles, counting my own heartbeat, counting the seconds between my wife’s breaths beside me until I convinced myself she’d stopped breathing and had to touch her shoulder to be sure. So when I started counting the buttons on my daughter’s stuffed rabbit, I told myself it was just that. A tic. A symptom of a brain that had forgotten how to leave things alone.

Ivy found the rabbit at a yard sale three streets over, back in September, back when the worst thing I had to worry about was whether she’d grow out of her shoes before winter. Some old woman was clearing out her late husband’s estate, everything a dollar, folding tables sagging under decades of somebody else’s life, and Ivy, five years old and constitutionally incapable of walking past anything long-eared and soft, latched onto the rabbit like it had been waiting there specifically for her.

It was ugly. I want to be honest about that, because I think the ugliness is part of what should have warned me. Grayish felt gone thin and shiny in patches, like it had been petted raw. One ear sewn on crooked, giving it a permanently quizzical look. Three black buttons down its front in a neat vertical row, like the buttons on a waistcoat, thread slightly different on each one, not matching, not uniform, like they’d been sewn on at different times by different hands over God knows how many years.

I offered the old woman a dollar. She wouldn’t take it.

I remember that clearly, because it embarrassed me at the time, this ancient woman in a cardigan, standing very still behind her folding table, looking at the rabbit in my daughter’s arms like it was a photograph of someone she used to know. I apologized, assumed the rabbit had sentimental value she hadn’t priced correctly, offered her five dollars instead. She still wouldn’t take it. She just looked at Ivy, and then at the rabbit, and said, in a voice that had gone flat and strange:

“You should sew a fourth one on.”

I laughed. Nervous laugh, the kind you make when someone says something slightly off at a party and you’re hoping if you laugh first, it retroactively becomes a joke. She didn’t laugh back. She didn’t say anything else. She just pushed the rabbit toward Ivy, waved off my money with a small, final gesture, and turned to help another customer like the conversation had never happened.

I thought about that woman’s face for days afterward, on and off, the way you worry a hangnail. But a five-year-old’s joy is a powerful solvent. It dissolves worry fast. Within a week the rabbit had a name, Threadbare, because Ivy is, God help me, an unusually literal child, and a seat at the dinner table, and a designated spot on the pillow, ear-side out, “so he can hear the story.”

For the first few weeks it was ordinary. That’s the part that still gets me, when I let myself think about it at three in the morning, which is the only time I let myself think about any of this properly: how ordinary it was. How the horror didn’t arrive all at once, with a slam and a shriek, but crept in through the most boring door in the house, routine. Repetition. The kind of quiet domestic rhythm where you stop really looking at things because you’ve already decided you know what they are.

I started noticing the buttons the way you notice a word after you’ve said it forty times and it stops sounding like a word. Three buttons. I’d count them without meaning to, while Ivy hugged the rabbit at bedtime, while I picked it up off the kitchen floor for the hundredth time, while it sat propped in the corner of the bathtub watching her splash. Three buttons, evenly spaced, and some low, stupid, pattern-hungry part of my brain just, logged it. Filed it away. Three. Three. Three.

Then one Tuesday there were four.

I remember the moment with an unpleasant clarity, the kind of clarity that usually only attaches itself to trauma, not to laundry. I was folding Ivy’s clothes on her bed and Threadbare was lying face-up beside the pillow, and I glanced down out of nothing but habit, the reflex of a man checking that the stairs are still the number of stairs they were yesterday. And there were four buttons. Not three. Four, evenly spaced, the same mismatched thread running through all of them like they’d always been there.

I laughed. Out loud, alone, in my daughter’s room, a short ugly bark of a laugh, because the alternative to laughing was something I didn’t want to look at directly yet. I told myself I’d miscounted before. Simple explanation. Occam’s razor. Tired dad, bad light, three creepy black buttons on a used toy is exactly the kind of detail a sleep-deprived brain invents and then insists it remembers differently.

I went looking for the receipt from the yard sale that same afternoon, not because I suspected anything yet, I want to be precise about the order of things, because the order matters, because it’s the order that makes my skin crawl now, but because I wanted to prove myself wrong. I wanted a piece of paper that said rabbit, three buttons, one dollar so I could laugh at myself properly and move on with my life.

I found the receipt in my coat pocket. One dollar, item: rabbit, no other explanation, the old woman’s handwriting cramped and old-fashioned on the front.

On the back, in handwriting that was absolutely, unmistakably not mine, someone had written:

she counts them too.

I stood in my kitchen holding that piece of paper for what felt like a very long time. My first thought, and I remember being almost proud of how rational it was, how it reached for the mundane before it reached for anything else, was that my wife had written it as some kind of joke, some private reference I wasn’t in on. But my wife’s handwriting slants right and loops her Y’s. This was cramped, upright, pressed so hard into the paper it had nearly torn through. It looked like the handwriting of someone writing in the dark, in a hurry, or someone whose hand was shaking.

I didn’t show it to her. I told myself that was to spare her worry. I think, if I’m honest, and I’m trying very hard, in writing this down, to finally be honest, the real reason was that saying it out loud to another person would have made it real in a way that just knowing it, alone, in my own skull, still let me half-disbelieve. I burned the receipt in the kitchen sink and watched it curl black and told myself, quite firmly, that the ink had simply looked like handwriting. Water damage. A trick of a stressed mind pattern-matching noise into language.

I did not believe myself. But I said it anyway, the way you say a prayer you don’t believe in, because saying it is sometimes the only tool you have.

Ivy started sleeping differently after that, though I want to be careful not to claim I noticed the change the day it happened, that’s the kind of thing memory does, restructures itself afterward into a story with cleaner edges than the actual, blurred, gradual truth. But sometime in that stretch of weeks, she stopped hugging Threadbare against her chest, the way she had at first, and started sleeping with it pressed against her throat instead. Nose-to-nose with it, its crooked ear tucked under her chin like she was trying to keep something warm.

I asked her why, one night, trying to sound casual, trying to sound like a dad asking about a stuffed animal and not a man conducting an interrogation.

“He gets cold,” she said, matter-of-fact, already half-asleep. “He needs to listen so he remembers how.”

“Remembers how to what, baby?”

“How my heart goes,” she said, and yawned, and that was the end of the conversation, because five-year-olds do not owe you the follow-up question your entire nervous system is screaming for.

I laughed it off in front of her. I have gotten very good, this past month, at laughing things off in front of her, at performing an ease I do not feel, at being the calm father-shaped object in the room while something underneath my ribs tightens like a fist. I did not laugh once I was back in the hallway. I stood outside her door with my hand flat against the wood and I did not go in, because some old animal part of my brain that has never learned to speak English told me, very clearly, that going in right then would mean seeing something I could not unsee.

The fifth button appeared on a Thursday. I know the exact day because by then I’d stopped trusting my own memory enough to rely on it, and I’d started keeping a tally on my phone, dated, timestamped, notes app entries that read, humiliatingly, like the diary of a man building a legal case against his own eyes. Oct 9, 4 buttons, confirmed twice. Oct 14, 4 buttons. Oct 23, 5 buttons, confirmed three times, made Ivy hold still while I counted, she laughed at me.

She laughed at me. That detail undoes me more than almost anything else, when I let myself sit with it. My daughter, giggling, wriggling in my grip while I counted five small black discs on a piece of gray felt with the specific, focused dread of a man defusing something, and she thought it was a game. She thought I was tickling her.

That night, once she was finally asleep, I did something I’m not proud of and would do again in an instant. I took the rabbit from her arms, gently, so gently, my hands shaking the entire time, and I carried it to the kitchen table under the good light and I unpicked one of the buttons myself with a seam ripper from my wife’s sewing kit.

I want to describe what was underneath honestly, because I think sanitizing it would be a kind of cowardice, and I’ve been a coward enough this past month to last a lifetime.

It wasn’t stuffing. I was braced for stuffing, cotton batting, yellowed foam, something dead and inert and explicable. Instead, under the felt where the button had been, there was skin. Not fabric printed to look like skin. Skin. Pale, faintly warm, cool the way a bruise is cool, with the specific unmistakable give of tissue under pressure, the kind of give your thumb recognizes half a second before your brain does and recoils from. And under the skin, so faint I told myself I’d imagined it, so faint I still lie awake trying to convince myself I imagined it, a pulse. Slow. Patient. Entirely wrong in its rhythm, like something counting down instead of a heart counting up. I held my own wrist against it without meaning to, some reflex older than thought, comparing the two rhythms, and mine was racing and its was not, its was steady and unhurried and unbothered, like it had all the time in the world and I had none.

I put the button back so fast I stabbed myself with the needle. I didn’t sew it properly. My hands wouldn’t stop shaking long enough to knot the thread, so I just pressed the button back into place with my thumb, hard, like I could seal it shut through sheer force of will, and I prayed, actually prayed, first time in fifteen years, that whatever I’d just done, whatever I’d just seen, wouldn’t matter. That it would forget I’d looked.

It didn’t forget. I know that now, because when I carried the rabbit back to Ivy’s room and set it gently by her pillow, its head had turned. Not far. An inch, maybe two. But rabbits sewn from felt do not turn their own heads, and I had set it down facing the wall, and when I looked back from the doorway it was facing the bed. Facing her. I told myself the movement had happened in transit, that I’d jostled it without noticing, that a held breath and a shaking hand can make anyone misremember an angle. I have told myself a great many things this past month. I am running out of ones I believe.

The old woman’s name had been on the yard sale flyer, still crumpled in a kitchen drawer from September, and I called the number at eleven that night like a man who has entirely stopped caring how he sounds. She picked up on the first ring. Not the second, not the third, the first, instantly, like she’d been sitting with the phone in her lap for thirty years waiting for exactly this call.

“How many now,” she said. Not a greeting. Not really a question, either. A checkpoint. A word she’d said before, to someone else, in some other house, on some other night just like this one.

I told her five.

The silence on the line went on long enough that I checked my phone to make sure the call hadn’t dropped. When she finally spoke, her voice had gone thin, careful, like she was choosing each word the way you’d choose footing on ice.

“My husband called it the counting rabbit,” she said. “His mother gave it to him when he was a boy. She told him what her own mother had told her, and I’ll tell you the same thing, because you’ve earned it now, whether you wanted to or not. The rabbit isn’t the thing you should be afraid of. The rabbit is just cloth, just a shape somebody sewed a long time ago to give the other thing a place to sit quietly in a child’s room without anyone screaming. What’s underneath is what’s counting.”

“Counting down to what?” My voice didn’t sound like mine.

“To when there’s no more room for buttons,” she said. “There were nine when my husband was born. Nine, in a neat little row, more than the front of him could really hold, I used to wonder how they fit. He died the week the ninth one came loose on its own. Popped a thread and just fell into his hand while he was holding it, like ripe fruit dropping. You understand the sequence isn’t gentle. It doesn’t come off when it’s ready. It goes in.“

I asked her, and I could hear how badly I wanted her to laugh, to tell me it was a story, an old wives’ tale, a coincidence dressed up in grief, why she’d given something like that to a child at a yard sale if she knew what it was.

The silence this time was worse than the first. When she spoke again her voice had shrunk to something almost inaudible, something spoken from very far away, or very far down.

“Because it was already at four when I put it on my table,” she said. “It hadn’t been inside my house in thirty years. My husband’s mother took it with her when she moved, and I never asked where, because I was glad, God forgive me, I was so glad to have it gone. Then one morning I woke up and it was sitting on my porch again. Four buttons. Wrapped in a child’s blanket, like a foundling somebody had left on my step in the night. I didn’t put it there. I didn’t invite it back. And I sold it to the very first child who reached for it, because I could not bear one more night of it under my roof, and because some small, ugly, hopeful part of me thought, maybe if it isn’t mine, the counting slows down.”

I asked her the only question that had ever mattered, in a voice I barely recognized as my own.

“Does it? Slow down?”

“No,” she said. “It just finds a new house to count in. It always has. It always will. It picks the softest room in the house, the one with the nightlight and the small breathing thing in the bed, because that’s where the counting goes fastest, and it is patient beyond anything you or I understand patience to mean. I am so sorry it found yours.”

She hung up. I called back nine times in a row, my thumb slamming the redial like it could undo something. Every call went straight to a dead tone, flat and endless, the specific silence of a number that has never in its existence been connected to anything. I looked her up online afterward, name, address, obituary records, anything. There is no trace of her. There is no record that woman, or her porch, or her husband, ever existed at all. I even drove past the yard sale address the next morning, unable to stop myself, and found a lot standing empty behind a chain-link fence, weeds up through cracked concrete, a FOR SALE sign so faded it might have been there for years. No house. No folding tables. No woman in a cardigan. Just a rectangle of dead grass where I could have sworn, with my whole chest, that I had stood in September and handed a child a rabbit.

I didn’t sleep that night. I sat in the hallway outside Ivy’s door with my back against the wall and a flashlight I never turned on, gripped in both hands like a weapon I didn’t have the courage to use, because some part of me still clung to the stupid, useless conviction that watching a door would stop whatever was on the other side of it. Around three in the morning I heard her voice through the wall, soft, sing-song, the exact cadence she uses for her pretend tea parties, the voice reserved for imaginary friends who are, apparently, listening back.

“Six,” she whispered. Just that. Offered up gently, warmly, like a secret shared between two people who trust each other completely. And then, after a pause so long I’d started to believe I’d imagined the first word too, a second, smaller voice answered her.

It was not my voice. It was not her voice, either, not quite, not the register a five-year-old’s throat can make, too low, too even, shaped like her voice the way a photocopy is shaped like the page beneath it. It said one word, and I have not been able to stop hearing it since.

“Almost.”

I don’t remember opening the door. I remember being through it, flashlight forgotten on the hallway floor, and finding Ivy fast asleep, mouth open, one arm flung wide in that particular boneless sprawl of a child who has never once doubted that the world will hold her safely while she sleeps. Threadbare sat propped upright against her pillow, not fallen over the way toys fall when a child drops off, sitting, deliberately, its crooked ear flopped forward at an angle that made it look, God help me, like it was still listening for something. And it was facing the door.

Best Book Picks by Age and Stage (Reception Through KS5)

Reading level matters as much as subject matter. ReadingList’s 2026 data shows Lexile ranges climbing steadily from early grades through high school, and mismatched books are the single most common reason a reluctant reader stays reluctant.

Reception and KS1: Short, rhythmic picture books with repeated phrases work best for decoding practice. Use them for daily read-alouds and point out rhyming patterns as an informal phonics check. Our early readers guide breaks down what to look for at this stage.

KS2: Middle-grade adventure and mystery titles from ALSC’s grades 3–5 band build reading stamina. Assign a chapter a night and follow with a two-minute retell exercise. This is also when kids start choosing their own books, so a reading habits checklist helps parents spot when a child is coasting versus genuinely engaged.

KS3: Realistic fiction and light dystopian titles suit this stage’s appetite for moral complexity. Use small-group discussion circles rather than solo book reports. Watch for content shifts, since KS3 titles start introducing heavier themes than KS2 readers are used to.

KS4: Exam-linked texts still dominate, but pair them with a contemporary novel on a similar theme for contrast essays. This keeps required reading from feeling like the only reading.

KS5: Literary fiction and nonfiction from Bank Street’s older-reader picks work well for independent study and university preparation. Encourage annotation and cross-referencing between assigned texts and personal choice reading.

At every stage, check a title’s suitability before assigning it class-wide. A book that reads as edgy at KS3 might be exactly right at KS4 and completely wrong two years earlier…
