Day 132 — Don’t Fear What They Fear

The world around us is consumed by fear — of the economy, of disease, of political upheaval, of the future. God’s instruction to his people is simple and radical: don’t fear what they fear.

Scripture: Isaiah 8:12-13

“Do not call conspiracy everything this people calls a conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread.”

We should stand in awe of God. We should not be afraid of the people in this world. We are called to regard God as holy. He is the one who truly does what is true and just and right. He is the one who is sinless and holy. We’re called to recognize the truth about the one we serve. The more we realize about his holiness, majesty and power, the less we have to fear.

Truth to Embrace: The Lord Almighty is Holy.

Prayer:

Lord, we are surrounded by people who are living their lives in fear. We know that you are holy and that we have nothing to fear because you are with us. Thank you.

Day 129 — Worship the Lord Alone

Israel’s problem wasn’t just that they stopped believing in God. It was that they had also started placing other things alongside him. Partial worship is still idolatry — and it costs us the victory.

Scripture: 2 Kings 17:24-28, 39

The king of Assyria brought people from other nations to settle in Samaria. They did not worship the Lord so God sent lions among them. The king was told and sent back one of the exiled priests to teach them how to worship the Lord. So one of the priests who had been exiled from Samaria came to live in Bethel and taught them how to worship the Lord… “Rather, worship the Lord your God; it is he who will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.”

Throughout the Bible we see warnings about all kinds of idolatry. Anyone or anything that people place ahead of God becomes an idol for them. Israel was told to worship God and only God. They were also given the reminder of God’s power displayed when he delivered them from captivity in Egypt. We are also to remember that God not only delivered Israel, but he is our deliverer and protector as well. When we dedicate ourselves to worshiping him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength we know we have nothing to fear from our enemies. The Lord God Almighty is fighting our battles for us.

Truth to Embrace: Worship the Lord and him alone.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for demonstrating your mighty power and for letting us know that you are always here for us. We trust you and place our lives in your hands. Thank you for all you do.

Put On the Full Armor of God

Day 123 — Put On the Full Armor of God

Paul doesn’t say stand against the enemy in your own strength. He says be strong in the Lord. The armor isn’t yours — it’s God’s. And he’s given it to you to wear every single day.

Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-11

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

Paul doesn’t tell us to be strong in our own strength, but to be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Our strength comes from relying on God and the power that he gives us. Then, Paul encourages us to put on the full armor that God provides so that we can stand. The armor includes righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, the word of God and it’s strengthened by prayer. We need to consistently be making sure we’re utilizing all of the armor that God provides and then dedicating ourselves to prayer. It is incredible that we have been empowered to stand against the enemy. We have been provided with all we need to be able to withstand the attacks of the enemy. We certainly don’t need to be afraid of the attacks. Stand firm and pray, pray, pray.

Truth to Embrace: When we choose to put on the full armor that the Lord provides he assures us that we will be able to stand against the devil’s attacks.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for equipping us to live victorious lives. Thank you for providing the full armor. Help us to stand boldly before the enemy and help us to rely on you and to live by faith. Thank you.
