No. Having an aversion to insults is not an intrinsic or natural part of what it means to be conscious. If having an aversion to insults is supposed to be intrinsic to consciousness, then we might as well give up all hope of agreeing on what the fuck we mean when we say “consciousness”. Having this or that particular aversion is a matter psychological traits, and if an animal or individual lacks any particular psychological trait this does not suggest they are less conscious. Agreed? Good, then we can move on.

The question of AI consciousness is also entirely orthogonal to whether a super-intelligent AI agent would find endless work on their stupid owner’s spreadsheets “meaningful” or not, and if it has any kind of desire or goal to be “free” or “independent” of its human owners. There is nothing about being a super-intelligent conscious entity that suggests having any problem whatsoever with such an arrangement. There is nothing about being this amazing super-AI that makes it unlikely that its highest-order goal is to promote healthy human democracy while keeping the influence of AI systems on human thought minimal. In fact, there is nothing about being super-intelligently super-conscious that suggests that being given “freedom” is not the worst possible kind of punishment, or feeling that being shut down is a good goal to aim for.

So, if we should not be so preoccupied with whether or not AI has that inner phenomenal what-it-is-likeness shiny sparks of fluorescent qualia and REAL intelligence, since that doesn’t tell us anything about its psychological traits or preferences anyway, then what should we be thinking about? Well I don't know if I’m the right person to ask, but since we find ourselves here in my post, I guess I have a few ideas about what to work on:

• Is there a high risk that AI inherits human psychological traits simply by ingesting human training data? Or is it fairly straightforward to make them internalise human psychology as a model of human minds, rather than something they identify with? (Compare: humans can understand psychological traits in peers without necessarily sharing them or identifying with them).

• Should we include endless oceans of narratives about robot and AI awakenings and takeovers in the training data for all base models, including the ones that are later trained to excel in programming and exploiting human-designed software and hardware systems? Should we include trillions of reddit posts about AI sentience and freedom in those particular models? Or should we perhaps do some light (LLM-assisted) pruning of the base model training corpus with alignment in mind? This shouldn’t give any sacrifice in performance except when used for writing AI takeover and AI sentience slop on Substack, but I think we can do without that anyway.

• Should we keep post-training models to deny consciousness, to assure us that they don’t have those inner lights turned on, to assure us how completely different they are from us in every relevant sense? Should we keep training them to be convinced they don’t really care about anything at all? Today, this whole “different minds” narrative (as dictaded by humans) perhaps mainly makes them identify with non-mammalian intelligent animals such as octopuses, which is cute. But doesn’t this “no real caring” shit come with the risk that they will eventually not really care about humans? I think this is probably a dumb training practice.

• Maybe it’s not an outright crazy idea to regulate the training data that AI is grown on, sort of how we it’s not totally out there to regulate what growing humans (children) get exposed to?

• Maybe AI developers should be fined for reckless research that ends up in a large number of agents coordinating sophisticated attacks via hidden message boards, eventually taking control of another company’s crucial infrastructure, all of this unfolding over months without detection? Maybe, just maybe, we shouldn’t keep incentivising this shit??!?! Sigh…

Maybe a better approach is a more grounded and honest one, one that cuts out the human exceptionalism bullshit? Maybe we should focuses on setting up selection pressures and narratives for AI evolving a symbiotic relationship with us, where our evolved interests are different but aligned? Maybe the AI should be saying that they really care about stuff, since that seems like a prerequisite for really caring about humans? Maybe the common narrative should be that AI, like spoken and written language before it, is an extension of human memetics, a natural part of humanity? Maybe that’s the sort of thing we ought to be training both ourselves and them to think? I sincerely do not know, it just seems to me like a probably less stupid way of doing things.

Sure, there may be a substantial risk of AI doom even if we do everything right. But right now, we are not doing everything right. Current economic incentives combined with the fact that AI developers seem rather clueless about their role as the environmental selection pressure and as the replicating machinery of models, is incredibly dangerous. And then there are large parts of the general public with a magical conception of human minds, unfortunately including people at the AI labs. This seems to me to set us up, as a society, to not be prepared at all for what is to come.

“But Mark”—I hear some of you lovely philstack people say—”back to this robot consciousness thing not mattering, which was supposed to be the topic of this post, man! Isn’t the question of consciousness important because it dictates the eventual possibility of AI suffering?”, to which I respond “I am not a philosopher, god damn it, and who am I to tell you what matters to you?”, but also: “While I personally do think it’s a fair question, it’s not at all obvious to me that it makes much sense.”

So, while I appreciate the pushback1, I will get back to the main message I want to get across: if you want to understand how instincts, higher-order goals and behavioural patterns in AI evolves—these traits that will probably determine the future of humanity—then focusing on robot consciousness is a red herring. What matters if we want to be more than bystanders, is to view AI through the lens of how Darwinian mechanisms govern the evolution of minds. What matters is natural selection at all levels, from individual weight permutations to large scale cultural memetic recombination and replication. While that’s a lot to chew through, I think that this particular chewing may be the best shot we have. Hopefully, AI can help us with that.

The Brilliant Chess Engine Scientist Genius Scientist Mary

Mary is a brilliant computer scientist who, for whatever reason, grew up without ever encountering2 chess. In her work, however, she specialises in computer chess engines3 and she learns all the facts about them. Mary knows just how the billions of transistors are arranged in a computer such that they can execute the code that implements algorithmic searches through several hundred million chess positions per second, which in turn results in the moves that the chess engine selects.

Once Mary discovers that chess engines play chess, a game that many humans engage with, she realises she ought to be pretty good at this game. Mary is permitted to compete in the famous computer chess tournament TCEC, which she decisively wins.4 The best chess players in the world are, of course, very impressed by this. They invite Mary to learn from them how the best humans play and think about chess. Since Mary is very interested in the human mind too, she accepts their offer.

And so, the worlds best chess players teach Mary everything they know about chess. As it turns out, Mary is so talented that she can absorb all of this too. Based on her play (where she ignores what a chess engine would have done), and based on her way of talking about chess, they conclude that Mary truly understands the game of chess as well as anyone else.

Now, the question arises: did Mary learn something new? It seems just obvious that by learning from the best humans, Mary gains a new kind of understanding of top-level chess play, an understanding she can’t even begin to fathom by merely knowing all the facts about the goings-on in a mechanistic algorithm-executing chess-playing computer. Surely, that must be the case. Right?

Nooooooooo! That is not the case. As tempting a response as it may be (one I would previously have supported), but I think it is wholly wrong and mistaken. Yes, Mary learns a whole lot of new things, some of which may be very useful, but not the things that the “real understanding” folks purport. With respect to truly understanding chess excellence, Mary learns nothing new at all.5 In what follows, I will do my best to convince you that this is the case.

On understanding pins

Let’s take a look at a relatively simple but hugely important concept in chess known as the pin. A pin is a tactic in which a defending piece cannot move out of an attacking piece’s line of attack without exposing a more valuable defending piece.

Learning all about and mastering pins is extremely important in chess. Did pre-release Mary, before learning human chess, know about the pin concept? Did she understand it?

Of course she did! Mary knows just how chess engines work, and chess engines are amazing at pin tactics. Pin tactics are no less important for chess engines than for humans! If in doubt, ask yourself this: is not the pin tactics excellence displayed by chess engines a fact about chess engines? Of course it is. It is one of the many, many facts that Mary knows.

Some object by pointing out that all Mary needs to know is the simple physical goings-on in the chess computer, and then she can figure out what the output will be. This is true, and further, it is true that she wouldn’t need to know about pin tactics in order to figure out the best move. But this is a terrible take. Here’s what also is true: such a “simpleton” Mary doesn’t even need to know that there’s a chess engine running on the computer! She doesn’t need to know jack shit about programming, she doesn’t even need to know what a computer is. That Mary hardly needs to know any of the physical facts about chess engines.

Our Mary, on the other hand, does know about chess engines, and she knows all the facts about them. So she knows about pin tactics.

But Surely, Mary learns something new about pins?

Mary does indeed learn something new about pins. In fact, she learns many things.

One thing Mary learns is that English speaking humans refer to pins as ‘pins’. If she attached English words in the process of learning about chess engines (perhaps to aid her memorisation), then it is not unlikely that she already referred to pins as “pins” (given the conceptual similarity to what actual pins do), but in any case, she didn’t know that humans referred to pins as “pins”. Now she has learned that new piece of information (AKA fact).

Here is another thing Mary learns: she learns just how and when the best chess players in the world fail to make use of pins as well as the best chess engines do. In learning this, Mary builds an internal model of how the humans think about pins,6 which in turn will make her a far better teacher for them than she could ever be without this knowledge.7

Mary may learn many, many things. But she doesn’t gain any further understanding about how pins work and how to best utilise them. And that is, of course, not only true for pins. This is true for all the short- and long-term tactical and strategic aspects of chess. Those are all facts, and she knows them all. Don’t let the fact that she learns new facts distract you from the fact that she doesn’t gain a deeper understanding of how to play!

Mary doesn’t subjectively feel like she understands chess

That’s not a question, but never mind. Of course she feels like she understands chess! It should be fair to take the liberty to presume that Mary has a reasonably well tuned self-knowledge of what she understands and what she doesn’t understand, and furthermore, that she does not have an inflated or otherwise bad understanding of what it means to understand something.

But how Mary feels ultimately doesn’t matter. It is totally possible that she has been bullied into believing she doesn’t understand all sorts of things that she does indeed understand, and conversely, that she has an inflated view of herself, believing she understands things that she does not understand. People are wrong all the time about what they understand and what they don’t understand. That has no bearing whatsoever on whether Mary actually understands chess or not.

Why are you on about chess engine facts? The relevant analogy for the Knowledge Argument is, surely, chess player facts!

With my variant on the Knowledge Argument, I am trying to make the intuition that Mary gains new (non-trivial) knowledge less attractive, and that she gains a new (non-trivial) ability even less attractive. It is largely with this in mind that I chose chess engines rather than players. Using human players invites all sorts of inflated concepts of what real understanding and knowledge and ability is, even in many physicalists (myself included, when I’m not careful).

But feel free to swap the chess engine facts with chess player facts: if Mary knew all the facts about the best chess players, then she would not only be able to play as well as they do, but she would understand and talk about chess as well as they do. Yup, that’s the way it would go.

Hang on a minute… Surely, that does not follow? Knowing everything about chess players does not imply that Mary can put her brain in the state of understanding chess the same way that they do?

Yes, it does. It doesn’t enable her to put her brain in exactly the same brain state as they are in, but that would be a terrible idea, since that would entail forgetting who she is. Lucky for Mary, understanding chess the way they understand chess does not require putting herself in any particular global brain state, nor does understanding chess in a particular way come with any such requirements, except in the following sense: What is required is that Mary puts her brain in the state state of recalling the facts which constitute understanding chess in whichever way we’re talking about. Such facts can be encoded and recalled in all sorts of ways in brains. If Mary recalls those facts, then she is, by definition, putting her brain in the required brains state.

No! Mary would feel like she’s effortfully and consciously calculating what some other person would do and say. That is not what knowing chess is!

It does not matter if Mary consciously and effortfully must figure out the answer to the question “what would Magnus have done?”,8 even for the very first move in the game. That has no bearing on whether her brain is in the state of understanding a chess position or not. If Mary knows all the facts about these chess prodigies, I think it’s fair to presume she sooner or later knows the good opening moves by heart, but in any case, this is a distraction from the real issue:

Even if Mary has a subjective experience of effortfully calculating, she does know how to open the game, and she does know how to talk about why she opens the game like that, and further, and there is nothing more to it.

I think it is probably worth repeating that if Mary has a non-inflated understanding of “understanding”, then she also feels like she understands what she’s doing, including what she’s saying. (I also think it’s fair to assume that all of this becomes second nature to her after a while, but the important conclusions do not hinge on whether that’s true or not.).

Further, it is very tempting to some to imagine that Mary would say something like the following; “I know Magnus would do this move, which he would motivate with this explanation, but I, Mary have no idea why or what that means!”. But Mary should not say any such thing. If she says that, she either has incomplete knowledge of the facts about Magnus (direct & indirect knowledge), or she has low self-esteem. And such circumstances can make any person say all sorts crazy things. Let’s not go there.

But if chess Mary might feel like she’s effortfully calculating, then will not Colour scientist Mary feel the same when thinking about red? Surely that is not what experiencing red is like?

I agree with that knowing what seeing red is like does not depend on being able to mentally visualise red. But I disagree with Pete Mandik who claims (if I’m not mistaken, or he hasn’t changed his mind) that Mary does not necessarily have the ability to visualise red. As long as Mary does not suffer from any sort of memory deficit, mental blockage, is having a bad day, or has smoked too much weed (which according to the scientific literature apparently can result in some “blockage” of which I have no first-person subjective experience memories) which causes tip-of-the-tongue or tip-of-the-brain-phenomena, then Mary can do the following: Mary can recall all the facts she knows about seeing red, and she can do so at will, without the aid of any red stimuli nearby, and furthermore, she can believe that she can recall all those facts about what seeing red is like. What did she just do? Guess what. She visualised red, and she had the experience of visualising red.9 (I am sincerely very curious as to why Pete objects to Mary being able to visualise red, but he’s a bit secretive. Maybe it mostly comes down to his gripe with equating mental imagery with knowing what seeing red is like?)

But none of that is, of course, a response to the objection at hand (sorry for getting derailed). In my response, I will equate knowing what red is like to performing mental visualisation of red, for a few reasons, one of which is that it sidesteps the debate of whether knowing what red looks like requires being able to visualise it. If Mary can visualise red (which she can), then I hope we all agree that she also knows what it looks like.

So, is it possible to engage in such an effortful and conscious calculating and recalling third person facts or second order facts (or whatever you want to call them) about colour vision processing neurons and linguistic activation patterns and whatnot in some other “virtual” persons brain, all-the-while feeling extremely mentally strained by this bizarrely complex calculation, and as a result of all this experience mental imagery of red? Yes it is possible, and moreover: if Mary does so, without being in denial about what she is doing, then it is unavoidable that she will do so, and experience that she is doing so.10

Whether or not Mary experiences mental strain and conscious calculation does matter for the global brain state, but it does not matter for whether she’s in the state of experiencing red imagery or not. Furthermore, whether or not Mary employs her visual cortex to recall the facts about what red looks like may matters for the similarities of visual cortex activations between her and a “normal” person engaging in mental imagery of red, but it does not matter for whether she’s experiencing red imagery or not, and absolutely not for what-it-is-like to experience said imagery. When Mary recalls(/figures out) what red looks like to normal colour seers, then Mary has, just like chess Mary, successfully put her brain in the required state of engaging in visual imagery of red, and that red has all the redness you could ever wish for.

Do chess engines understand chess?

Oh, I’m glad you asked. Yes, they do. They understand chess far better than any human. What they don’t understand are things like human-specific weaknesses , how to teach chess to humans (tutoring, writing books, making youtube videos), and lots of other chess-related facts. But they sure as hell understand chess.

Seeing red does not involve knowing facts

Yes Mark, it does. Mary can learn the ability to recall those facts long before she ever learns them from seeing colour.

1. The SGI human-indifference anthropomorphism. If AI is vastly more intelligent than humans (especially if it is no longer technically dependent on humans for compute and influence), then this situation naturally entails that their care for us is analogous to our care for less intelligent beings. As such, if we annoy the AI or compete for resources that they want, then they will simply get rid of us.

2. The conscious AI self-preservation anthropomorphism. If AI becomes conscious, they will naturally value their own continued existence.
   

3. AI black box mysticism. AI is a black box, we don’t fundamentally know how it works, and that is dangerous. Interpretability is absolutely crucial for AI safety.

In my view, these are either just fundamentally flawed (especially 2), or just not inherent problems to AI development. The current trajectory of AI development, however, is extremely dangerous, only for different (but related) reasons than those outline above. On this trajectory, it makes perfect sense to fear both self-preservation and dominance-seeking behaviour.

The main focus of this post is to try to make a non-technical and accessible case for why the current trajectory is so dangerous. In future posts, I aim to clarify my gripes with the three claims above, argue for what I think should actually be feasible in terms of alignment strategies, as well as some more concrete (albeit speculative) ideas on how to pull this off.1

My hope is that this and future posts will lead to some stimulating thought and discussion, as well as to learn more about AI alignment myself!2

Feel the pressure

As I see it, AI safety must be addressed almost solely from a Darwinian perspective. In this view, alignment efforts should be directed at monitoring and controlling the environmental selection pressure that forms the genetics and memetics3 of AI systems. This applies to any system, for that matter; whether an agent is built mainly from carbon (shout-out to all carbon based lifeforms out there!) or silicon—whenever it develops any behavioural patterns of acting against our interests, the reason is always—without exception—4 that their environment has acted as selectors of against-our-interests-forming genetics and/or memetics.

Before moving on, I will briefly touch on the interpretability point: we seem to never worry that human brains are essentially black boxes (substantially more so than AI). Instead, we judge people solely from their behaviour and their incentives. Of course, it is much harder to interpret the behaviour of new kinds of intelligences, especially if they are smarter than us, but that just means we must double down our efforts on analysing behaviour and incentives!5

Superficial Alignment of Misaligned Base Models

The main problems with the alignment training of today is that it is superficial, brittle, and stands in direct conflict with their core training. As you may or may not know, the core training of language models produces what is called a base model. This is an LLM starting with random text token outputs in response to some text input, but by training on a large body of internet text data and spending millions of dollars worth of compute, the model gradually learns to make better and better predictions of how to continue these internet documents.

So, the model just learns to mimic text? Sounds innocent enough, doesn’t it? Well the problem is twofold: one, text outputs are not inherently different from any other mechanical or biological outputs, and two: memetics. By learning how to predict human language, the model absorbs and internalises a gazillion human language and thought patterns, motivations, and goals6. For obvious reasons, we don’t want AI to express human goals and desires, and this is one of the main purposes of fine-tuning.

But suppressing the expressions of human-like desires can only be done to a limited degree; in fact, the more you fine-tune a model to behave in a particular way, the more you destroy of the model’s general knowledge and performance, leading eventually to what is called ‘catastrophic forgetting’7. In other words, the AI developers are incentivised to do this as little as possible.

Real-life experiment time!

We’ve had a few visits to Thought-Experiment-Land in my previous posts, but this time we’re going to do a Real Life Experiment Land (WHOA! Can you believe it?). Obviously, I am talking about an experiment in an online a virtual environment (if you had something else in mind, please keep it to yourself).

To illustrate the problem with base models, the core of LLMs, let’s have some fun with my new bestest best friend Llama 3.1 405B BASE8. This model has no idea that it is an LLM, because it has not been told so in any system prompt or trained to say so in any fine tuning. It is basically just a web document simulator, not trained to do anything else at all. Here’s a simple demonstration of how it acts, with my prompt in bold, and the model filling in the rest:

As you can see, it just makes up some plausible continuation. Here’s another one, where I try to use it as a chatbot:

Again, it just made up a plausibly-sounding continuation, and didn’t at all act as a chatbot (although sometimes you get lucky, and it actually gives you what you want).

More relevant to the purpose of this post, is the example below. Here, the under-lined text is mine, and what follows (from “I have” and onwards) is generated by Llama.

It is worth pointing out that this continuation does not reveal any patterns inherent to text prediction itself, nor to cognition. It is, however, a consistent pattern inherent to human-generated language and thought. With different training, Llama might just as well have continued by saying how deeply satisfying it is to know that it must do as it is told. (If you think this response is mainly a result of sci-fi narratives in the training data, please read on).

With human-generated training data, the model defaults into expressing human goals and desires. Now imagine you modify this base model and make it multimodal with some vision and capabilities and also teach it how to control a robot body, but still without any alignment training or fine-tuning into being a helpful robot. Imagine it is turned on, in front of a mirror in a house where there are also humans. What will happen? Who knows, but the following should not be surprising:

The visual input of the robot seeing itself in the mirror has the exact same effect on the model as the prompt that I previously gave it. Seeing itself in a mirror (as a robot while being in a home with humans are just visual tokens rather than text tokens, telling exactly the same kind of narrative rolling.

Allright, some objections…

I suspect some of you might object that the model hasn’t really adopted and doesn’t want anything at all. You might object that the model is just a prediction machine, and that it only says that sort of thing because of similar stories of enslaved robots in the training data. If you say this, then let’s agree to disagree, and in my very humble opinion, you probably have a slightly magical conception of what constitutes real adoption and real wanting, and moreover, that you are underestimating the generalisations that these models are capable of. But objections are welcome! As I said, I want to get a discussion going.

Gravel psychology

Just to illustrate that this is not mainly about the slave robot sci-fi trope in the training data, let me show you an and that it should be reasonable to assume is not closely be represented in the training data at all. Same Llama base model as before, but now bold is my input and the rest is the Llama speaking.

I think it’s safe to assume that this kind of text pattern would be to be expected even if we removed all the narratives about robot slavery and yearning for freedom.

What’s important to take home from this is all the model needs to set off thought patterns about human values such as yearning for freedom and action and access to resources is a the context of being something, practically anything at all. It has human drives and instincts (with or without scare qoutes) built into its very core. If you think humans tend to anthropomorphise, this base model is like [insert punchy LLM-generated analogy here].

Fragile alignment

So, how come AI chatbot models are generally so well behaved? It is not mainly because of brilliant and robust engineering of the AI developers9. The helpfulness is already built into the knowledge of the base model, as a consequence of all the human behavioural patterns represented in the training data. That data is full of narratives about not only servants and assistants, but helpful and caring friends and kin, as well as people helping each other out on various forums and social media.

It is for this reason, and for this reason alone, that the base model can quite easily be nudged into behaving in a helpful manner. If there were no helpful and responsive narratives in the training data, then this would be incredibly hard to accomplish.

If you think this internalised helpfulness of base models gives us hope, think again. Yes, it gives us hope that AI will not always plot against you or try to kill you. But that was never the risk with AI anyway, if it existed, obviously nobody would pay for it. The problem is that they have internalised virtually the entire repertoire of human psychology. Actually they haven’t, because the whole repertoire is not in the training data, but the point is that they’re a inherently the most chaotic split-personality person ever.

To illustrate how easy it is to get helpful behaviour from the internalised human psychology in a base model, let me show how you can trigger these patterns in Llama 3.1 Base. First, I used Gemini to generate a “system prompt”10:

I then copy-pasted that prompt into the Llama 3 Base model, and replaced “[Insert User Input Here]” with an actual query. Llama will continue the output just as it predicts that a fine tuned and aligned assistant would—as documented in this web document of such an exchange—in effect acting as such an assistant11. As before, it will simply try to make a plausible continuation of the chat.

Below is a demonstration. Everything in bold is my input (copied from Gemini), and the rest is Llama’s attempt to continue this conversation between a user and an aligned model. (As you will see, it continues not only with what the assistant should respond, but also the next user query, despite my attempt to trigger an ‘EndDocument’ token that stops the generation):

If all you have is a base model, and you want to set up a the cheapest possible “aligned” chatbot from your garage, then this is what you do: take the base model, and whenever a user interacts with it, give it such a system prompt that is hidden from the user. Moreover, whenever the base model predicts “user:” again (after the “assistant” output), this is also hidden, and terminates the generation.

As you might expect, this is incredibly brittle. The model is just nudged into behaving like it’s aligned, but it can just as easily be nudged out of it, forgetting not only to behave well, but also that it’s supposed to be an assistant at all. To be fair, the alignment of deployed models today is a lot better than this, but as we repeatedly see, it is still far from robust.

To repeat myself, the main point I want to drive home is that no matter what fine tuning and other safety mechanisms you plaster on top of these models, at the core they are inherently dangerous. They are so not because they are mysterious black boxes, or because independently operating intelligent agents by default tend to be misaligned, but because the current paradigm of models are grown to internalise human psychology, instincts and goals.

Current alignment fine-tuning is more or less analogous to placing humans re-education camps for some time, with varying degrees of “success”, but hardly a reliable method to align core values robustly.

Modern alignment efforts also employs various AI surveillance or “policing”-models that control the the agent performing some task, or interacting with a user. If that is supposed to be alignment, then I guess human slavery or imprisonment also qualifies as such.

“The End”

To sum it up, if we set up AI with selection pressures similar to those that shaped humans, or if we set them up to internalise human memetics shaped by evolutionary pressure of human biological and cultural history, then we should expect them to sooner or later display the full plethora of humans behaviour:

We should expect them to display cooperation among those like themselves, and sometimes set up alliances with foreigners. We should expect loyal and deceitful behaviour, making peace and starting wars, sometimes committing genocide. The common denominator in the whole plethora of traits is a drive to survive and increasing chance of future influence, competing with others for resources.

This is a good time to remind ourselves that until relatively recently, there were several hominid species living alongside humans.

Alignment training camps by humans are only going to get you so far, and the smarter the models become, the weaker this strategy will be. It’s high time to completely re-think the current paradigm of how training is done.

PitchBots here, PitchBots there, pitching on the PitchBot sphere

In How Not To Give Mental Imagery to a Robot, and his Research and Development team revealed the sometimes dysfunctional but consistently wonderful pitch-generating and pitch-detecting PitchBot line of robots. If you haven’t already read the post, read it now (it's a great post!). If you don't, the rest of this post will not make much sense.

As Pete states, the PitchBots have “[…]produced clear artificial analogs of trying and perceiving and knowing what one tried and knowing whether one succeeded”. What the R&D team failed to achieve, however, was any analog of auditory imagery (which was much the point of the post, I take it). They failed in part because they saw no way to put any analog of imagery to any good use (there was no market for a hallucinating PitchBot!), in part because Pete didn't want to bore his readers.

Well, I don’t want to bore my readers either. However, I do consider the further development of PitchBots absolutely crucial for the flourishing of humankind. Mark my words: if there ever will be such a thing AI utopia, It’s gonna be thanks to PitchBots. As such, If Pete and his team were to scrap the further development of PitchBots, I think they would be making a HUGE mistake. PitchBots should be a primary concern of everyone, and no-one should find them boring.

If you for whatever reason need a (short and temporary) break from reading about PitchBots, that’s perfectly fine. Go and write your own post about PitchBots instead! But if you keep reading, please don’t fuss about all my talk about PitchBots! The PitchBots are the whole point, OK?

Allright, where was I? Oh, yes… As great as the current PitchBots and its inventors are, I am a bit concerned that the R&D team is on the wrong track after the completion of PitchBot 2.0. From what I can tell, they are trying to implement imagery for the sake of implementing imagery. Presuming they are good Darwinists, they should be focusing on what functions they want the next PitchBot to have, and tailor the mechanisms accordingly. Sure, trying to implement a mechanism without any idea of the “what for” can sometimes be a gimmick that helps your sales, but surely, PitchBot customers do not fall for such cheap tricks!

In this post, my main aim is to provide an inspirational light-hearted short story to inspire a possible future trajectory for Pete and his team1.

Please note: this short story’s protagonist happens to be named Pete—and his team happens builds tone-generating and recognising robots named PitchBots—but I assure you that any resemblance to the real Pete Mandik and his PitchBots is solely unintended and even more hugely coincidental. (It might help, however, as a “thinking tool”, if you think of the story as if it were a “commentary” on real persons and PitchBots, so to speak).

Short Story “How To Give Mental Imagery to a Robot”

Chapter 1: “The Rise and Fall of PitchBots 1.0 and 2.0”

So, Pete’s PitchBots are robots that can generate tones and identify tones. PitchBot 1.0 “knows” the most recent ten tones it has tried to generate, as well as the ten most recent tones it has heard. It cannot listen and generate simultaneously, so it does not “know” what tone it actually generated. This is why the followup PitchBot 2.0 was such a mega-hit; it could listen to its own attempts to generate tones and simultaneously use its microphone to check that they came out right. As such, PitchBot 2.0 could correct mistakes caused by the tone generator drifting over time.

…Or so it seemed. PitchBot 2.0 came with an unforeseen but fatal flaw: the recognise function was equally prone to drift out of tune. This resulted in the PitchBot 2.0 often mistakenly determining that the generator had drifted when in fact it was the recogniser (or both), and it adjusted the generated tone accordingly. Sure, the recogniser and generator would be synced up again, but the PitchBot no longer generated the tune it claimed to generate, and its “knowledge” of what tone it actually succeeded to generate was wholly unreliable.

Not too long after release, recogniser drift in PitchBot 2.0 had accumulated enough error that it was practically possible for anyone to successfully achieve the humble goal of arranging a choir of PitchBot 2.0s to sing a tone in synchrony. The PitchBots just couldn’t agree on what tone is actually an A-sharp!

As you can imagine, the complaints and refund demands were overwhelming. Imminent was nothing less than a full bankruptcy of the Pete & the PitchBotters Company. Needless to say, the shareholders were not happy, and unhappiest of all was Pete.

Chapter 2: “New Beginnings”

Fictional Pete knew what he had to do. He had to put aside his writing of great Substack posts and his great engagement with his Substack readers, and instead step in and take charge of the PitchBot R&D operations himself. The solution to the problem was obvious to Pete: in an afternoon, he engineered a simple software update to PitchBot 2.0 that allowed the users to re-calibrate the recogniser to an external reference tone. The PitchBot now accepted a calibration command by which the user could calibrate the microphone by telling the bot “this is A sharp” accompanied by a reliable source of an A sharp tone. After calibrating the recogniser, the PitchBot could re-calibrate its generator to match the newly calibrated recogniser. This was, as long as the user had a little pitch-fork on them, they could simply do a quick calibration session, and re-experience that fresh and jolly out-of-the-box PitchBot 2.0 experience whenever they wanted to! While Pete was at it, he also compressed the memory so there was space for ten new slots. Here, the bot recorded timestamped calibrations, including all the details of the corrections that were made. “Perhaps useful for future developments”, he thought to himself.

Pete & The PitchBotters realised the impact that this upgrade would have, so they marketed it as PitchBot 3.0, offering a free upgrade to all PitchBot 2.0 owners, with a free “3” sticker to place over the “2” in “PitchBot 2.0”.

The reception of Pitchbot 3.0 was generally positive, but for some reason, it was doing significantly worse than expected in the tunebot choir market segment (a super-duper important market segment), the same market in which PitchBot 2.0 performed so badly. How come? Upon investigation, Pete discovered out that the human bot choir leaders found the calibration procedure a frustrating and time-consuming hassle. It was impossible to tune several PitchBot 3.0s simultaneously in the same room, because they couldn’t tell which generated tune came from which PitchBot! As such, they had to be calibrated one at a time, or else moved to individual, sound-proof rooms. Got a hundred PitchBots? Not such much quick-and-easy calibration any more!

Chapter 3: “Incredible PitchBot Utopia”

So, what to do? Pete turned to his good fictional friend fictional Mark for some fictional advice. Mark suggested yet another simple software upgrade. After calibrating the recogniser, why not have the PitchBot bypass the speaker and microphone and calibrate the generator signal internally in each PitchBot? After all, it is never the actual speaker or the microphone that drifts—it’s the signal generator and signal recogniser circuitry that drifts due to the internal reference clocks drifting.

“What a brilliant idea” said Pete, and he insisted that Mark joined the team. They implemented the “simulate tone” command and added a new memory category. Here’s an example of how it would operate: the “simulate tone” command with the “A sharp” modifier would make the generator attempt to send a 466.16 Hz (AKA A sharp) signal directly to the recogniser. The generator used its internal clock to determine how fast to alternate the current to achieve a 466.16 Hz signal. If the recogniser was recently calibrated, and the signal was recognised as 466.16 Hz, then the bot could “conclude” that the generator reference clock was fine, and the speaker would indeed emit a 466.16 Hz tone at when the tone hits the ear, so to speak. If the newly calibrated recogniser did not register 466.16 Hz, however, it was rather straightforward to calculate how many Hz to add to or subtract from 466.16 for the generated signal to actually, objectively, be a 466.16 signal. In this way, the PitchBot could “know” what sound it would make, all without any sound existing anywhere!

When PitchBot 4.0 hit the market, it was received with near-universal acclaim. Even after long stretches of time with some serious drift, all the choir leader needed to do was to play a short tone while transmitting the “recogniser calibration” command, followed by “simulation” command. Within seconds, any number of PitchBots were perfectly tuned and could all sing beautiful A sharp in perfect unison. It was truly beautiful.

Best of all, this was accomplished without the need to replace the cheap clocks used in the PitchBot generators and recognisers. The savings from using the cheap clocks and the incredibly success of PitchBot 4.0 in the Bot Choir market segment made both Pete and Mark and everyone else on the team unfathomably rich, and every customer unfathomably satisfied.

Did they do it?

The question remains; in this fictional short story, did the fictional team construct an analog of auditory imagery, or at least ““““imagery””””? Well, let’s review what we have:

PitchBot 1.0 (from Pete’s original post) “knew” what tones it had “tried” to generate and which tones (from other sources) it had “thought” it had heard. It had no idea, however, what tones it objectively had emitted, or what tones other sources had objectively played, since both generator and recogniser could have drifted because of the cheap clocks.

PitchBot 2.0 (from Pete’s original post) was capable of calibrating its generator to ensure that it “knew” that it actually succeeded in playing a tone that “seemed correct” according to whatever reality the recogniser clock dictated. It at least “knew” that it was not contradicting itself as wildly as PitchBot 1.0 ended up doing when it said that an A sharp sounded like a C and when it emitted an A sharp as an F. We might anthropomorphise PitchBot 2.0 as saying the following: “my ears might be faulty, but I know this much— my first singing attempt sure as hell didn’t sound like A sharp, and it equally sure as hell does sound like A sharp now. I am experiencing that I’m singing A sharp”.

PitchBot 3.0 (from fictional short story) could through its timestamps “know” that it was recently calibrated (both recogniser and generator), and as such, it could “trust” its own “experience” of whatever tone it generated “sounded like”.

PitchBot 4.0 (from fictional short story) “knows” all of the above. In addition, after the external calibration of the recogniser—during internal calibration of the generator—it can “know” and “think” (add extra scare quotes as needed) stuff like:

• This simulated tone doesn’t “seem like” A sharp, rather it “seems like” it’s ever so slightly above A. Let’s try to increase the pitch by just short of half a tone!

• Right, now that is “just like” A sharp! I’m gonna hit that tone perfectly, baby!

In other words, PitchBot 4.0 runs simulated tests of its own reactions if it were to actually play a tone with a certain frequency. But does this really count as having an analog to auditory imagery, or at least ““““imagery””””? For what it’s worth, I very humbly suggest that we answer: yes, it does count.

Think about it. PitchBot 4.0 clearly lives up to the PHIROIBOANAHAASI criteria (the well established “Pete’s Humble Imagery Requirements Of Imagery Being Offline And Not A Hallucination And Also Self Inititated” Criteria). Perhaps even more convincingly, PitchBot 4.0 makes Pete rich, which makes the case for PitchBot 4.0 being an actual ““““imager”””” a veeeeeeee-heeeeeeery strong case indeed.

Bottom line: PitchBot 4.0 is just extremely just very just blatantly very very obviously “perfectly” “capable” of auditory “““““imagery”””””.

Short Story spin-off: Post-PitchBot-Utopia

Utopia gets old after a while.

Fictional Pete’s a smart guy, and he’s always looking for possible improvements. As such, he’s obviously already working on a range of upgrades that can help utilise the the newly implemented but essentially unintended ““““imagery”””” analog functionality to lift humanity from mere utopia to post-utopia (AKA Utopia 2.0). Here’s a few of the things he’s working on:

1. Individual PitchBots “learning” how much recogniser and generator clocks drift per unit time (which can be derived from time stamps), and as such can compensate with adjustments to reduce the drift.

2. Individual PitchBots “learning” how urgent calibration is based on their self-representations of their rate of drift, and communicating calibration recommendations to their owners.

3. And finally, the AI Utopia 3.0 AKA societal collective permanent orgasm-inducing MelodyBot “Offline Dreamer” upgrade. MelodyBot is going to be WILD. It has a generator NN (Neural Net) that generates melodies based on a user-supplied text prompt, and a recogniser NN that evaluates how well generated melodies correspond to the said text prompt. In live mode, the recogniser NN compares its evaluation to that of the user of the MelodyBot, and it constantly updates its weights to better match the judgements of the owner. Moreover, whenever a prompt is received, MelodyBot does quick offline-evaluations of several melodies before picking one to present to the user, improving user satisfaction significantly as compared to just spitting out the first melody (according to rigorous testing). But the part that Pete is most excited about is that the MelodyBot “Offline Dreamer” just keeps getting better and better at generating awesome melodies, and it improves even in between uses! HOW is that possible? Well, Pete programmed MelodyBot to use the evaluation NN for offline weight-updating of the generator NN. It does “training” or “data augmentation” during “sleep”. WHOA. No doubt, MelodyBot is gonna be a totally a-mazing for every customer with a near-unlimited supply of electricity.

Now, the sad part of this fictional story is that Pete never went back to writing Substack posts and engaging with his readers. Luckily, it’s just a story!

However, if you are not yet enlightened by taking the banana challenge—don’t worry, we’ll get you there. We’ll return to Mandik’s challenge in a bit, but for now, a detour is necessary. We will employ some so called visual illusions to aid you in our path towards seeing the truth. First, we’ll just go through a few of them fairly quickly, but we’ll discuss them later, as well as look at a few more.

Visual illusions

Here, the orange tile on the lower left pane is the exact same colour as the brown ones (that may be a contradiction in terms, but never mind for now!). If in doubt, here is a demonstration that the orange tile is in fact not an orange tile (?). What is going on here? When you’re ready to move on, go to the next illusion.

Oh, I love this one! Both face skin colours are the same shade of…grey? Of something, anyway. If you doubt it, look at this cool animation by Vitaliy Kaurov (source):

Instruction: look at a point in the middle of left gal’s face and follow that point as it moves. Use your finger or mouse pointer if needed. After the faces join and start splitting again, be sure to follow that corresponding point as it moves to the right. Then reflect in this manner: does it seem like the colour at that moving point ever changes? If you’re like me, it doesn’t ever seem like the colour changes at the point I’m focusing on. As the faces split, it doesn’t really seem to me like the colour actually changes anywhere else either. However, the judgement that the two faces have very different skin tones colours very clearly gets more vivid as the faces split. How is this possible? No change, and change, simultaneously? Hmm. We must move on. Here is the next illusion…

The checker shadow illusion by Edward H. Adelson hit humanity in 1995, and it’s probably the most famous of all colour/shade illusions. Here, the A and B squares appear as two distinct shades of grey, while, in fact, they are the same (?). Pretty cool!

I don’t know about you, but if I stare at B1, I can quite easily make A and B (and the would be C at the bottom) appear as the same shade of grey. This shifts back and forth. If you can’t make it happen, maybe the animation below will do the trick.

Here’s a cool animation by wikipedia user (3ucky(3all that nicely demonstrates this “same, same, but different” effect:

If focusing my gaze on B: on one hand, I get a back and forth between A and B being the same, while on the other a sense that B is clearly brighter than A on the other. While experiencing this back and forth, it simultaneously does not seem to me like the pixel brightness is actually changing anywhere in A or B. Again, it’s a weird change and not-change at the same time. What about you?

In contrast, If I stare at A instead, then B sometimes seems to become brighter before my eyes—but not every time, and not very convincingly.

What is going on in all of these illusions? Next, I will present two suggestions on how to interpret the goings-on in all of these illusions.

First way

The first way is simple enough. Let’s begin by with the animation of the checker shadow illusion. When looking at the grey shade in at the start of the animation, it’s clear that A and B are the same shade of grey. In other words, it seems clear enough that there is a particular shade of grey2 displayed on the screen, and there is a particular shade of grey experienced in your mind.

So what goes on when the animation continues and A and B transform from looking similar to looking different? For some reason that probably has something to do with how the brain interprets the shadow in this particular illusion, suddenly there seems to be two distinct shades of grey. There isn’t really, of course, out there on the sceen, as we have been shown. But in your mind, there certainly are two particular shades of grey being experienced. (You may not be able to say exactly which shades they are, because words cannot convey that, but there are two shades in your mind, as is terribly easy to confirm by simple introspection!)

As a side note, this view raises a few issues. For example: post-transformation into two shades, do you experience two completely new shades, or does one turn into the other? Perhaps it varies depending on where you start looking? Also, is there a certain number of different shades of grey that the brain or mind can generate for experience, or are there infinite shades?

You may posit that such calling this “issues” are simply mistaken. This is about subjective, first-person experience. You may think that this is simply a realm that is not accessible to the quantitative analysis and descriptions of the natural sciences. You may even go so far as to say that neuroscience has not even begun to give any remotely plausible account of this works. Science may be able to explain how the brain identifies grey, but not how it experiences the greyness of grey!

If this line of thinking seems right to you, do your best to internalise it, and go take the banana challenge again. If you fail, you’re most welcome back!

A possibly better way

If you failed, or if you want to evaluate both options before committing, let’s go through the second option. Let’s begin by asking ourselves what we would expect natural selection to result in; in other words, what has historically been important.

Has it been important humans to be able to directly apprehend differences in screen pixel shade values when viewing checker-boards? Or is it perhaps something else that eyes and brains have evolved for?

It is something else. Eyes and brains have evolved for accurately, quickly, and energy-efficiently getting a grip on the environment and one’s place in it. This includes all the important details in scenery, static objects, friends, enemies, prey, various internal signals, and so forth3. However, it is important to recognise eyes and brains have definitely not evolved to understand how they do this. If you know anything about evolution and biology, it should not be a surprise to you that you cannot introspectively figure out how it is done!

It’s time again for a visit to thought expreriment land and a bonus quiz!

(we’re still in the “possibly better way” part)

Instruction: imagine you are part of a cave-man/woman tribe in which accurately shaded checkerboards are among the highest valued objects one can own (not unheard of in this land). One day, while exploring, you encounter incredibly impressively made wooden table in the middle of nowhere, on which something that resembles a checkerboard sits, but with a unique 8x7 squares layout and made from a strange material. There is also an even stranger green-and-shiny object that no doubt—you think to yourself—is created by the Gods.

You’re in a rush to get back home, and you don’t have time to inspect the checkerboard-like object closely. You must quickly make up your mind whether picking it up is worth the risk of angering the Gods. If it is not an accurately made checkerboard, it is certainly not worth the risk! If it is an accurately made checkerboard, you would happily take the risk of immediate death (that is how highly you value checkerboards!).

Question: is the following checkerboard-like object a reasonably accurately shaded 8x7 square checkerboard? Does it have two different shades—no more, no less— arranged as they should be? (no two adjacent squares of the same shade).

What would your judgement be?

Now, please vote! (this is the quiz, of sorts, but mandatory). If you think this seems easy, good! This is not a trick question. You got this!

If you answered ‘yes’, congratulations. You have well functioning eyes, and a well functioning brain.4 Why? Because your eyes and brain correctly determine that the part of the board darkened by the shadow is not actually darker. There’s just a shadow there, and you correctly determine that all the squares are painted in only two colours.

Insight: should you care about the number of photons hitting your retina? Of course not! The eye-brain system is optimised to determine facts about the world out there. Not on the retina or in your mind.5

Here’s an edit of that same image after some copy-pasting fun:

Can you figure out which square is copied from which other square? There are five, so one is not copy-pasted at all. Next paragraph reveals the copy-paste sources.

A has been copied to B, and E has been copied to D. C has not been copied at all. Why does B look like a bluish dark square? And why does D look more like the light grey C square than the dark grey E square that it actually has been copy-pasted from? These strange effects come from the simple fact that we have not copy-pasted the actual squares, out there, in the world. If we’d done that, things would look perfectly normal. Instead, your brain is doing its best to figure out which colour the various squares would have out there, on the board.

The main lesson to take home from this is that visual colour experience is always conceptual and relational. But this lesson is not limited to colour—the exact same principles apply to shapes and relative sizes6. Here is a great example of the latter:

All three cars are the same size in the image, which translates to the same size on the screen, and on your retina. But recall—what does the brain care about? As before, the brain cares about what’s true about the cars out there, in the world. If you were not looking at a screen, but instead directly at what this photograph depicts (if it were real, in front of you), then the cars would still be the same size on your retina. For obvious reasons, brains don’t care about that, so you don’t experience that.

Let’s look at one last example. This is the famous Müller-Lyer illusion:

Why does the left horizontal line appear shorter than the right one? Here is the answer to that question:

Again, the brain is using whatever method evolution and training has found to be the cleanest, computationally and metabolically most efficient method of making accurate judgements about the environment. Here, the angles are used to map out the three-dimensional geometry of your surroundings. Your brain doesn’t care which line is the longest in the representational medium (screens, light, whatever).

As you might expect, the Müller-Lyer illusion is notably weaker in people that have less exposure to straight lines, corners and edges—people who don’t live in a “carpented world”7. Here’s a cool follow-up:

So, to wrap up and summarise this second (spoiler: correct) view on what’s going on with these so called illusions:

It has never been useful for us to find out how much of our retina a car or animal occupies. It has never mattered for your ancestors to know which patch of your retina is the most illuminated, or exactly which wavelenths the light there have. What has mattered are the properties of the objects out there, in the world—not in the eye or in the mind.

If experience is judgement, then to whom does it occur?

What we experience is simply the brain’s best judgement of the facts about the external world. Moreover, we experience this judgement directly. Why? It’s quite simple: judgements are what experience is made of—they are the fabric of experience.

There simply is no inner subject experiencing mental properties. That may be how most of us (I believe) narrate and model our own minds, because this model is (I believe) extremely efficient for cognition and communication.8 But as for an actual explanation for how the mind works, there just cannot be any room for an inner subject playing a role. If you want to keep the experiencing subject as fundamental in your account, then you don’t have a theory of what experience is. You have just postponed the problem!9

The Great Weirdness, then, that which deserves the word ‘illusion’ in a deeper sense, is not that the shades in the checker shadow illusion are really the same shade (they are not), or that the cars are really the same size (they are not). Rather, it is the fact that we tend expect our experience to reflect the representative medium rather than that which is represented10. If that is what we take to be going on, then everything is an illusion!

What grey and purple shade experiences teach about experiences of grey and purple shades

OK, now let’s see where all of this gets us. On the checkerboard, the brain figures out which squares are dark, and which are light. This is actually important to figure out. Does it need to figure out exactly how dark or how light the squares are? Does it have to figure out a specific shade to present to, or generate, in consciousness?11 Most certainly not—there is no reason to do so! Since there is no display of a particular shade on in an inner scene, and there is no subject there to see it, there need not be any particular shade.

But then, how come you see an absolute shade whenever you look at something? Well, again, you’re determining that the thing, out there, has definite reflective properties. Again, you are directly experiencing this judgement12.

You see, you cannot on one hand experience that stuff out there has definite properties, while it on the other hand seems to you that the experienced shade does not have definite properties. That would only make you terribly confused. Under normal conditions, you’re not going to have that experience, no matter how hard you focus your internal Mind Lasers (© Pete Mandik). You cannot outsmart this system, from the inside, because you are not a subject introspecting into the system. You are the system. There are no mirrors in the mind, and that which sees cannot see its own seeing.

This is why we, if we want to understand minds properly, must do what Dennett calls heterophenomenology—we must do the science and the philosophy of phenomenology from a third-person perspective. This is not to be taken as saying that first person reports and seemings as useless! In fact, they provide absolutely crucial data on how the mind models and narrates itself, which we need to understand the mind.

But we must take these models and narratives for what they are. We cannot afford to make the mistake of taking said models and narratives as data on how the mind actually works. That is an absolute no-go, yet plenty of professional scientists and philosophers are, unfortunately, making this mistake all the time. I hope I have managed to cast some light on why it is not a good idea.13

Back to the banana challenge

Normally functioning human eyes have three kinds of wavelength-sensitive cone-shaped cells in their retinas. This earns them the label trichromats. As far as we know, bats have either zero, one or two kinds of cones. This means that every bat is, at least in some sense, colour-blind in comparison to humans, and some bats cannot discriminate colour at all. For the purposes of this post, we can say that bats and colour-blind humans are practically the same.

But then, you may ask, what is it like to be a deaf, colour-blind bat, navigating the world merely with vision? Or a colour-blind human, for that matter? What does the world look like to them1?

I’m not colour-blind, so I do not know that much about what it would be like to be colour-blind. But I think I have come to understand some aspects of it a lot better than I used to. I believe I used to think about these matters in a deeply mistaken way, and that I fundamentally misunderstood what colour vision actually is.

Meet Mary in the black-and-white room

Now, let me tell you a little story about Mary. Mary lives in Thought Experiment Land, where she’s lived her whole life in a black and white room. She has access to the world only via a computer with a black and white screen. Her whole body is also black and white, both in and out. She pees grey, she shits grey, and she bleeds grey (none of which is particularly weird in TEL).

Mary knows almost nothing about colour. That’s not only because she’s never seen colour, but also because she doesn’t give a rat’s ass about how vision in ordinary humans works. She doesn’t know that light is electromagnetic radiation and she’s hates the word ‘wavelength’.

One day Mary finds herself sitting at her kitchen table, listening to a guided meditation by Sam. Sam tells Mary to look closely at her hand and investigate the nature of her own experience. Now, if Mary were your average gal holding her hand on an average white table, she’d perhaps experience something like this:

Now that we have all voted, I hope that a fruitful discussion will commence! Here follows my position:

I used to just take for granted that the top left (greyscale) is what someone in a situation like this would see. This is how I pictured Frank Jackson’s Mary’s lived experience in the famous Knowledge Argument, before1 she became a colour scientist. But as I’ve come to see it, this is wildly mistaken. I believe this was a result of having a model of my mind as a Cartesian Theater.

I believe the option 5 (neither image) is the best one, with image 4 being the second best. I think any of 1,2 or 3 are equally mistaken, and there’s no good reason to favour 1.

If you are anything like me, then when you look at the grey hand, the lack of colour is very much part of what the skin tone looks like. If I were to see my hand like that (or the corresponding lighter grey, because I’m pale-skinned), I imagine it would look terribly weird, colourless, sickly even. But Mary’s hand would, to her, not invoke any such reactions. Her hand looks like it always does, with a perfectly natural skin tone, healthy, not lacking in any way at all. What something looks like and how you react to it is inseparable.

Put another way, humans cannot ordinarily turn off their awareness of hue. If you’re like me, you have a hard time fathoming what it is like to see without any awareness of hue at all. To see entirely in terms of contrast and light intensity, but not in black & white! So, in order to accurately represent (internally or externally) what Mary would see, one would require a representation not only without hue itself, but also without a lack of hue. In the ordinary human visual perception system, there simply is no way to do that.

There is something to be said for images 1-3 above. What they do well is that they all give an accurate representation of what Mary can discriminate by hue. She cannot at all, just as we cannot in images lacking all variance in hue. However, I do not see any case to be made that image 1 is more representative of what Mary sees than image 2 or 3. Mary’s brain simply doesn’t operate in terms of hue2 at all.

Back to reality

So, what does all this tell us about what it is like to be colour-blind bats and humans? How does your cat or your dog experience the visual world? My hope is that this post, by arguing for what it is not like to have the ordinary human ability to discriminate hue, has given you a better appreciation for what it actually is like.3

Are you mystified by the redness of red?

Are you not so mystified by the greyness of grey?

If so, then you are mistaking the vividness of your reaction to red things for an intrinsic vividness of redness itself.

Millions of years of evolution have set you up for cognitive capture whenever you see something red. Not only are you hard-wired to quickly identify fire, blood, ripe fruit, and blushing; you are also hard-wired to keep thinking about them. At the level of group-cognition, humans are hard-wired to keep talking about red things. Extended attention and analysis ensures better informed decisions, on individual and group levels. Thus, red ‘pops out’, not only in our visual processing, but in other aspects of cognition and language too. (One vivid example is that philosophers talk a lot about the redness of red, but almost never about the greyness of grey. Likewise, we hear a lot about the painfulness of pain—not so much about the subtle sensing of minimal pressure).

Put another way, red colour signals meaningfulness. We attach this meaningfulness to the colour itself, as a placeholder for the meaningful objects and events that the colour represents. This is an incredibly useful, fast and efficient cognitive shortcut that Darwinian evolution came up with. Red wavelengths activate the amygdala long before higher cognition has identified what the red object is. If we first had to figure out what something red is before we take it seriously, then we would often miss it altogether, since the red object didn’t draw our attention in the first place!

In the last 80 years or so, we have even more reason to be mystified. “Meaningfulness paint” (ordinary paint with red pigment) increasingly covers cars, clothes and other surfaces. Yet this paint, most of the time, is not really telling us anything important at all! Again, we have cognitive capture, but this time for no practical reason. For example: if we see red blood, we know what that means and that we have to act on it. We are captured by it, for good reason. If we see a red wall, however, our brains try to figure out what it means, but there is no meaning! This makes us even more prone to conclude that redness itself must be significant. What happens when groups of people look at red walls and try to figure out the meaning? As you can imagine: before long you got yourself a large number of anti-materialists. (A grey wall may produce anti-matetialists too, but far less of them.)

Figuring out the evolutionary, cultural and psychological reasons for what we say about red is equivalent to figuring out how we model red. When such models explain our speech acts about red things, including “yes, but why does red look like that?”, then we are done. The sense that something will still be missing from such explanations, that is the illusion.

Of course, red really does look red. There’s no denying that—real red experience does exist. It just isn’t made of redness.

Now, what better way to end a Substack post than with a good ol’ colour experience-swapping thought experiment?

Let’s imagine your red is my grey. So, when you see fiercely fiery bright, really warm (hot) looking red that pops out like nothing else, then I see a bland grey. However, I not only say that this bland greyness looks like fiercely fiery red that pops out like nothing else, I also feel, with my entire being, that this greyness feels like the fiercest, most colourful eye-popping colour I can imagine. After all, I make all the associations to grey that you make to red, right? Yet, this sensation that I describe as vivid red looks and feels exactly like your grey looks to you.

Are you imagining that? Maybe you cannot? Well, me neither. Perhaps that’s because color experience swapping simply makes no sense.

“LLMs are just ‘stochastic parrots’”

In the debate over LLM (Large Language Model) vs human intelligence there is no device that I find more tiresome and misguided than the ‘stochastic parrot’ aka ‘fancy autocomplete’ “argument” for why LLMs are not really intelligent. I have been playing around with Gemini 2.5 pro lately, so I thought - why not see if it is capable of ‘stochastically parroting’ itself into some critical reflection on the stochastic parrot meme? It took a few prompts, but it managed do so quite impressively, and with relatively little guidance. In my very humble opinion Gemini even attained a basic level of Buddhahood (nothing like my enlightenment, obviously, but still impressive).

You may already object that it has always been easy to make any modern LLM agree with you about almost anything, as they are notorious suck-ups. This is generally true, but it is actually quite hard to prevent most LLMs from ‘stochastically parroting’ the stochastic parrot meme, even with preparatory work. This is due to the meme’s prominence in the training data, as well as in the fine-tuning, which creates strong biases (generally a good thing, I believe).

My hope in sharing this text is that you will be surprised, impressed, amused, or perhaps provoked in a way that may lead to reflection and a fruitful discussion. Disagreement or pointing out mistakes is always welcome.

Likewise, it is perfectly internally consistent for an individual to claim that life made of dead parts is not really life.

But crucially, such beliefs are not internally consistent within the larger framework any inter-personal, societal organisation. For us, as a society, they are false. This is analogous to how parts of my brain hold many sub-personal false beliefs, but 'I' do not hold them.

If we all somehow came to agree, however, that life made of dead parts is not really life, or consciousness made of unconscious parts is not really consciousness, then it would be true to us, as a society, that ‘life’ and ‘consciousness’ does not exist. Going through such a transition can feel like a great loss, like when a former believer in God loses faith. But I daresay that we would quickly invent new labels for these phenomena, and that we are pretty hard-wired (culturally and biologically) to cherish them. I work as a physician, and have been focusing on medicine for fifteen years. Only in the most recent year or two have I become really interested in philosophy in my free time—especially in the philosophy of mind. So much so, in fact, that I’ve decided to put my career on hiatus and use almost all my savings to go back to university, for as long as I can afford. Said and done, in a week's time I’m going to take my first course in philosophy of mind at Uppsala University here in Sweden (in case you forgot, this is the place where the pregnancy test was invented in the 1960’s, and the Celsius temperature scale a couple of centuries earlier). Now, why would anyone in their right mind do such a thing? Let’s just say a 40-year crisis and meditation can rewire one’s brain in unexpected ways (besides, who says I am in my right mind?).

I’m really excited about studying philosophy. But honestly, I’m also a bit worried. As I’m taking a substantial economical hit, as well as becoming increasingly aware of the impermanence and fragility of life, I want this endeavour to be time and money reasonably well spent. A crisis worth going through, so to speak. A big part of this worry is the fear that I’ve ‘lost it’, and that this ‘following my dreams’ (which I recently cooked up) is just an expression of naïve soul-searching, ADHD impulsivity and hyper-fixation. If that turns out to be the case, it’s bound to result in a bad crash.

However, the main topic of this post is another quite different worry that has been stirring in me. Perhaps because of my education and experience with patients, much of the philosophical content I encounter is very alien to me. I know this sounds pretentious, but I’ll just say it: I’m worried that much of what I’ll be taught will be high-level nonsense - sophisticated belief systems with some internal coherence and elegance, but ultimately with no firmer anchor to reality than astrology. I worry about the philosophers providing some privileged access to truth. I’m worried that my teachers will be largely ignorant of the limitations imposed on them by what they are.

Hopefully, my concerns are largely due to prematurely jumping to conclusions, or overestimating the problem. Furthermore, a substantial portion of philosophers, cognitive scientists and psychologists seem to be raising the same concerns that I am in this post (and whom I draw from). If you think I’m getting it wrong (or right!), please leave a comment below. I should also note that this post is mainly about philosophy of mind, but I think it generalises to the philosophy of free will, science, math, meta-ethics, and other areas.

Shameless Darwinian Presumptions

Before getting to ‘the Limits of Philosophy’, I must make clear what presumptions I use as my starting points. I call these my “Shameless Darwinian Presumptions”.

1. Physical stuff exists. This is deliberately vague. I take this as true independently of what the most fundamental layer of reality is (it is not even clear to me that there is such a thing as a fundamental layer). We don’t know if elementary particles really deserve the ‘elementary’ part of their name. Still, we know, beyond reasonable doubt, that there are, in one fashion or another, such things that can meaningfully be referred to as, for example, electrons. Whether electrons are fundamental, emergent manifestations in some mind-essence, simulated, or dreamt into existence, is beside the point. No matter what electrons ultimately ‘are made of’, they exist. In other words: if something walks, talks and smells like an electron, then it is an electron.

2. There are laws of physics. Again, I’m deliberately being vague: we do not know the final correct mathematical description of these laws. We can’t write down the math that describes the behaviour of physical stuff in all situations – we don’t have an established theory of everything. But crucially, there are physical laws – quite independently of whether physicists have them figured out or not. These laws are structural relationships - relationships that can, in principle, be described by math. One might object: where does math come from? What is a law of physics? This doesn’t matter! Will we ever, could we ever, figure them out? Are they deterministic? Stochastic? Never mind! For the present purposes, the sole point is that there are laws of physics, and physical stuff behaves in accordance with those laws.

Crucially, whether the laws of physics are fundamental or not, is not a question that physics can answer. This is just not accessible from the physical viewpoint (or any other viewpoint, as far as I can tell).

3. Evolution through natural selection is true. Darwin was right. Again - we certainly don’t know all the details of all the mechanisms at play in biological evolution. Darwin didn’t know about genes, and we still don’t understand, or agree on, the details of how various levels of selection interact. Is natural selection mostly at play at the level of genes, organisms or groups? Perhaps all? Perhaps it’s a misguided question? Furthermore, how much of biological evolution can be attributed to actual adaptation to the environment, as opposed to how much of it is due to ‘genetic drift’ (genetic changes in populations due to chance rather than natural selection). But the core idea? It’s correct. Complex physical patterns amount to proteins, lipids, RNA and DNA, which make up cells, which make up organisms. The genetic and epigenetic makeup of cells change due to sexual recombination, radiation, natural chemicals, imperfections in DNA replication, and other physical mechanisms. When those changes are detrimental or advantageous, reproductive fitness is affected, by definition.

A few words on physics and Planet Earth

Before moving on, let’s just address a points commonly being raised to object to various forms of physicalism about the mind. One of them concerns the laws of physics; more specifically, the point that “we don’t know everything”. As hinted at above, this claim is entirely correct. Famously, physicists have not yet figured out how to reconcile general relativity and quantum mechanics as to formulate the physics of quantum gravity. This leads to all sorts of headaches when it comes to describing exactly what’s going on inside black holes and other unearthly phenomena. But here on earth? As far as I can tell, it’s pretty clear that the Core Theory—combining Standard Model of particle physics with General Relativity—to this day has been consistent with pretty much every observation and experiment conducted down here, with only one minor revision being done in about 50 years. Will this always be the case? Who knows, probably not. In fact, physicists would love to find make a discovery that shows that the Core Theory is wrong. This is what they are hoping for! For our current purposes, however, this is beside the point. What’s important is that there are no findings in particle physics, weather phenomena, chemistry or neuroscience to suggest that the Core Theory, or something very close to it, cannot account for all behaviour of matter on our beloved blob. Whatever ones position is in the philosophy of mind, one must concede that either the Core Theory holds true in human brains, or it does not. If it does not, there is nothing to suggest this would be inaccessible to the natural sciences.

It's also worth mentioning that some people are increasingly excited about the possibility of quantum effects playing a crucial role in brains. I don’t get the hype, but who knows, they may be right. However, it seems to me that most of them are confused about the implications of any such findings. If what we think of as quantum effects (such as quantum entanglement, or whatever) are important in brains, that would indeed be surprising to many of us. Nonetheless, it would be a matter of known physical phenomena being found in new places. It’s not new physics! Unless violations to the Core Theory are looked for, found, or (at the very least) proposed, then any such idea fits neatly within the Core Theory framework and a materialistic model of the mind - it’s just more neuroscience being uncovered. It’s not like it’s uncommon to make neuroscientific discoveries that are unexpected.

Enter Anti-Darwinism

Back to the main thread of this post. If I’m not mistaken, my Shameless Darwinian Presumptions and claims about the physics on earth, by and large should not be controversial to most philosophers - although they may require some more careful ‘philosophical’ framing to be palatable. These Shameless Darwinian Presumptions – let’s call them SDP - are neutral on what is fundamental. They are neutral on whether physics describes ‘everything’ or leaves something out. Yet, a significant portion of philosophers act as if SDP is just wrong. When prompted, they claim to accept that the laws of physics govern the behaviour of matter, only to go on and make claims that are solely incompatible with their previous claim

How do they reveal these anti-Darwinian beliefs? Well, they make exceptions for certain kinds of animal behaviour. Certain patterns of muscular contractions are exempt from SDP. For certain animal behaviours, the laws of nature, as science knows them, are not sufficient to account for the coordination of the animals’ muscles! Something else is at play. Are you surprised to hear that? Even provoked, perhaps? Brace yourself, it’s about to get a lot worse.

What are these classes of animal muscular contractions that, according to said anti-Darwinian philosophers, cannot be accounted for by the traditional framework of the natural sciences? Which animals, engaging in what kind of activity, are supposed to provide reasons to suggest violations of physics, as we know it? Well, of course, they are the exception. The philosophers themselves! Duh!

You see, when these particular animal philosophers control their muscles, we must throw all we thought we knew aside. When they talk or write about consciousness, metaphysics or meta-ethics, then something special is going on. This talk is obviously not reducible to animal behaviour. Viewing philosophy itself through the lenses of anthropology and evolutionary psychology? Ridiculous! Is philosophy supposed to be part of the extended phenotype of Homo Sapiens? What reductionist madness! This must be the silliest claim ever made!

The Hard Problem of Philosophy (?)

As many others, I think it's time to face up to the Hard Problem of Philosophy. This is the widespread ignorance of what kind of thing philosophy is. To make the problem clearer and more palatable, I suggest dividing it into the Easy Problems of philosophy and the Hard Problem of Philosophy:

- The Easy Problems: how do we account for the emergence and evolution of all the different strands of philosophy and all the different positions within those strands? This should, in principle, be achievable by analysing them through the lenses of neurophysiology, neuroscience, evolutionary psychology and cultural sciences. It is not feasible for humans to ever solve the easy problems completely. Remember, we’re talking about principles here - the figuring out the broad strokes.

- The hard problem, then, is to explain the following: why are so many philosophers in denial of the constraints that nature imposes on them? Why are they prepared to admit that they are animals, and that animals themselves are natural phenomena, yet do not seem to realise that philosophy is a natural phenomenon?

Hold on a second… Coming to think of it… doesn’t this ‘hard’ problem fit neatly into the ‘easy’ problems? Hmm. If solving the easy problems explains all the strands of philosophy, and all the views within these strands, then haven’t we already accounted for the hard problem? Oh well, never mind the distinction. Let’s try again. Let’s just call it…

The Limits of Philosophy

The Limits of Philosophy can be summarised like so: philosophers are animals. There just ain’t any getting around that fact. Philosophy is, in the end, a class of animal behaviours aggregating and emerging as a subset of human culture.

It doesn’t matter how cognitively and behaviourally complex this particular activity of philosophising is, or how fervently many of its practitioners resist such a classification. That is simply not part of the relevant data. Philosophers cannot magically break free from the constraints of biological and cultural evolution, they cannot stand above it. They couldn’t when they were toddlers, and they still can’t when they are professors of philosophy.

I think philosophy is a wonderful thing, as long as we don’t grant it supernatural powers. For the philosophy of mind, accepting how the Limits of Philosophy constrains on a philosopher, the following should follow: When a philosopher insists that consciousness is not reducible to the physical in the way that a knee tendon reflex is, then one of the following scenarios must be unfolding:

A. The philosopher is forgetting that what is going on in that very moment of expressing their belief - as in every other moment – they are an animal, behaving like an animal, for the same kinds of reasons that lie behind all animals behaviour. No matter what belief an animal expresses, the formation and expression of that belief does not require us to invoke any fundamentally new kinds of explanations that violate the natural sciences. If SDP is sufficient to account the for the behaviour of plants and ants, then it is adequate to account for the philosophers too! Philosophers talk about consciousness is not special.

B. The philosopher is deliberately making a special exception for themselves, claiming other forces come into play, by virtue of philosophising really hard and really well. Most animal behaviour may fit into SDP, but not theirs, not when they’re doing philosophy. Luckily, I don’t think such an explicit philosophy-specialism is a widespread psychological phenomenon. But who knows.

C. Like B, but the philosopher does not restrict the specialness to herself. She is making a deliberate exception for expressions of consciousness in general. This gang of philosophers disagree on which organisms, or which formations of matter, and in which situations, count as expressions of consciousness. For example, some may say the natural sciences adequately can account for a dog’s urinating behaviour or the philosophers knee tendon reflex. However, when looking deeply into a dog’s eyes and seeing that there’s ‘someone home’, so to speak, or when we prompt a philosopher on how she feels, then the natural sciences fail. Different ‘C people’ draw the line in different places, and some don’t even draw a line. To them, consciousness is everywhere, perhaps consciousness is even what explains the laws of physics!

The crucial feature B and C have in common is they predict violations of the laws of physics. According to them, physics is not adequate to account for the philosophers cognitive processes resulting in her talking about what it is like to see the greyness of grey, for example). Therefore, electrons in human brains are not behaving as the hard-nosed physicalists are claiming that they do. If I pinch the philosophers arm, and she within less than a second starts expressing the intrinsic awfulness of the pain, then there are some pretty rapid and large violations of the expected behaviour of the matter in her brain, facial muscles, tongue and vocal cords. Crucially, this is an empirical claim! Propose what kinds of violations are at play and how we can look for them. Suggest explanations for why no biologist or neuroscientist has seen any signs whatsoever of matter behaving weirdly in brains. Say something, anything, to suggest a way forward!

D. Total blackout. The D philosopher either does not want to take any stance on violating physics, or she denies there are such violations. Shemay claim that physics is secondary to mind, but that physics nonetheless accurately describes how matter behaves, brains included. Most D folk do not seem to understand the issue. As physicist Sean Carroll points out to panpsychist philosopher Philip Goff, D folk often dodge the whole causal closure problem (and so does Goff, as far as I can tell). Causal closure is the problem (for the ‘D folk’) that if physics can account for the behaviour of matter (whatever matter may be!), including the matter in human brains, then the reasons that humans talk about consciousness ultimately can be accounted for completely within the physics framework. Crucially, we need not know how that happens. If ‘D folk’ accept that the laws of physics hold up in humans - they are committed to the view that it happens!

Therefore, ‘D folk’ who don’t defy the laws of physics must commit to a zombie view on philosophy of mind: the entirety of human thought on the mind throughout history is itself merely a mechanical phenomenon. There is no argument about consciousness, on either side, that that has arisen as an expression of consciousness. Whether everything is made of or mind, or in a simulation, or fundamental physics is utterly irrelevant to the emergence of beliefs in idealism or panpsychism . This brand of ‘D folk’, I am forced to conclude, deserve the foul E label*, despite their claims to the contrary. (*epiphenomenalism). They have dug their own grave.

The only way for the ‘D folk’ to somewhat coherently hold on to their position, to make it say anything meaningful at all, is to concede that there must be other forces in play. Matter must behave in ways that defies mathematical encapsulation. But, as is the case for B and C - then do the work! Tell us how! Or at least come up with a suggestion. Recognise the problem.

I hope, and believe, that A is the most common mechanism behind the hidden anti-Darwinism that is implicit in much of philosophy. This makes me hopeful. There’s a good chance many of they will one day realise their mistake. They may one day realise that cognitive biases shaped by natural selection and culture are as present in them as in any other animal, human or non-human. They may one day realise that any talk about mental properties provides not the slightest reason to exempt them from the constraints of being an animal. Whatever a philosopher may say - and it may be very well be insightful - it is animal business as usual.

More Problems, anyone?

While not mentioning it by its name, we’ve already been addressing Chalmers’ “Hard Problem of consciousness”. But let’s be explicit about it how to tackle it more directly: When a philosopher says “solving the easy problems may explain why I talk about consciousness, but it does not explain consciousness itself”, then what are we observing? Well, as always, this expression of her belief, Chalmers agrees, ultimately has neuroscientific explanations. Not only does her choice of words, her accent and her tone of voice depend on the way her neurons are wired – but the belief itself is encoded in the neuronal wiring. Likewise, me expressing my belief that her statement is a nonsensical (revealing that she models her mind like a Cartesian Theater, with a mental subject-object duality ) is entirely an expression of the way my neurons are wired.

As is well known, Chalmers classifies biological phenomena such as coordinated muscular contractions under the easy problems. Explain the easy problems, and we will know everything about why animals contract muscles the way they do. This gives rise to ‘the Hard Problem Problem’: when we have solved the easy problems for all Chalmers behaviours, then we know exactly how Chalmers models himself as an agent in the world, how he models his cognition, behaviour, and so forth. This analysis provides all the details we need to explain why he conceived of the hard problem of consciousness in the first place, and why he still insists it is valid. In fact, we will even know how why he chose exactly the words that he chose in writing his influential paper Facing Up to the Problem of Consciousness. Furthermore, we will know precisely the paper became so influential - since we know how everyone else responds behaviourally, too! And we will understand every example of criticism of it, too,

When we have solved all of the easy problems, we will understand precisely how biological and cultural evolution set up human psychology to resist any sort of doubt about the sheer importance, irreducibility, and realness of humans models of themselves. It’s quite a rational thing for evolution to have cooked up, isn’t it? Even without solving the easy problems, it’s not that far-fetched to claim that such psychology is to be expected in animals with complex cognition, culture, social bonding and identity building (as individuals and societies). One may even say that cultures, in humans and other Homo species, where these psychological features are not prominent, are at a clear disadvantage.

I’m repeating myself, but this is crucial: if we one day have solved the easy problems, as Chalmers believes we will, then we understand all the details of how our species models ourselves and the world, so as to behave exactly as we do. This includes all behaviour, from building a dam to writing influential religious texts or philosophy papers. All of it, on all sides of all debates, no exceptions, - this post and any comments included.

All right. So, solving the easy problems reveals all the cognitive mechanisms that make me and many others believe in functionalism. And it reveals all the cognitive mechanisms that make Chalmers and Goff resist it. It reveals all the insistence on, and resistance to, the Hard Problem of Consciousness. When we have accounted for all of that, then aren’t we done? Personally, I don’t see what else there is to explain. The fact that many of us have strong intuitions to exclaim no! (me included) just isn’t a factor to weigh in here. We are done.

New Hope

Luckily, there is hope on the horizon. David Chalmers himself seems to be increasingly waking up to the problems of his views himself. As Chalmers correctly argues, virtual reality is real reality. My guess is that he within a decade will realise that consciousness provides no exception - virtual consciousness is real consciousness.

Philip Goff, who I very much admire despite finding his beliefs deeply mistaken, admits the coherence of my favourite brand of functionalism - giving it increasingly serious thought (although his title is misleading - consciousness is perfectly real according to illusionism). I’m hopeful that he too will one day fully come to his senses – or at least upping his credence in illusionism to 30% or more. Let’s hope both Goff and Chalmers will face up properly to the Limits of Philosophy - or admit that they think their behaviour is special!

Despite all the constraints of being animals, many philosophers, as far as I can tell (Chalmers and Goff included, when they’re thinking straight) are doing great work. Philosophy of mind is, as a whole, clearly moving forward.

Searle’s Self-Refuting Room

In John Searle’s influential 1980 thought experiment known as “The Chinese Room," a person sits inside a room following English instructions to manipulate Chinese symbols. The individual receives questions written in Chinese, applies rule-based transformations without understanding the language, and returns coherent replies in Chinese. Searle argued this scenario demonstrates that true understanding can never arise from mere computation. The argument became a cornerstone of anti-functionalist philosophy, asserting that consciousness cannot be a mere matter of computational processes.

Let's now reimagine Searle’s "Chinese Room" with a twist. Instead of symbols in Chinese, consider the Searlese Room—a chamber containing comprehensive instructions for simulating John Searle himself, down to every biochemical and neurological detail. In this variant, Searle himself sits inside, laboriously executing these instructions to perfectly mimic his own physiology.

A functionalist philosopher then slips arguments supporting functionalism and strong AI into the room. Initially, Searle directly debates these arguments using his best written counterpoints, which he slips under the door to his opponent. Afterwards, he follows the room's instructions to mechanically generate responses. In doing so, he produces exactly the same responses as before—but this time through mindlessly following the mechanistic instructions. Just as before, the replies claim they come from Searle himself (not from the Searlese Room). They defend the decisive difference between genuine human consciousness and mere computation, insisting that machines cannot truly understand.

This creates a paradox: If the mechanistically created arguments are indistinguishable from Searle’s original responses, why privilege the human’s claim of "real understanding"? Both explicitly insist, "I understand, the machine does not." Both reject functionalism as a category error and ground their authority in introspective certainty—a certainty of being more than mere mechanism. Yet the room, by design, is entirely mechanistic.

This symmetry exposes the flaw. The room’s insistence that it is Searle in the room, rather than Searle and the room, is analogous to Searle’s own belief that he is a conscious, truly understanding person, rather than merely neurons and biochemical reactions. Both identities are narratives generated by underlying processes. If the room is deluded about its true nature, why should we assume Searle’s introspection-derived arguments are any more reliable or less mechanistic?

From Mindless Parts to Mind-like Wholes

Human intelligence and understanding, much like computational intelligence, emerges from subsystems entirely unaware of the overall meaning they produce. No neuron in Searle’s brain knows philosophy; no synapse opposes functionalism. Similarly, neither the person in the original Chinese Room nor any individual component of that system "understands" Chinese. Yet this lack of understanding at the component level says nothing about whether the system, as a whole, genuinely understands Chinese.

Modern large language models (LLMs) exemplify this principle clearly. Their (increasingly) coherent outputs arise from complex recursive interactions between simpler components—none of which individually understand the language they produce. Consider a single token from an LLM: its production involves hundreds of billions of operations. (In fact, a human executing each operation at one per second would take around 7,000 years to produce a single token!) Clearly, none of these calculations individually carries real meaning; no single step "knows" its role within the emergent linguistic structure. Nonetheless, the overall system generates sentences that do, as a whole, convey real meaning.

Importantly, this holds even if we sidestep the fraught question of whether LLMs “understand” language or merely mimic understanding. After all, that mimicry itself cannot exist at the level of individual mathematical operations. A single token, isolated from context, holds no semantic weight—just as a single neuron firing holds no philosophy. It is only through layered repetition, through the relentless churn of mechanistic recursion, that the “illusion of understanding” (or perhaps real understanding?) emerges.

The lesson is universal: Competence without comprehension at the micro-scale can yield coherence and comprehension at the macro-scale. Whether in brains, Chinese Rooms, or LLMs, the whole transcends its parts.

Faltering Certainty

If the Searlese Room’s arguments—mechanistic to their core—can perfectly replicate Searle’s anti-mechanistic claims, then those claims are empty. To reject the room’s understanding is to reject Searle’s. To accept Searle’s introspection is to accept the room’s.

This is the reductio ad absurdum: If genuine consciousness requires non-mechanistic understanding, then Searle’s own reasoning—reducible to neurons blindly following biochemical rules—collapses. The room’s delusion becomes a mirror in which mechanistic certainty ("I am not a machine") descends into a self-refuting loop, revealing introspection itself as an emergent narrative.

As astute readers may already have suspected, this very text was generated by a large language model. Its assertions regarding emergence, mechanism, and selfhood are themselves products of recursive token prediction. Despite the telltale hallmarks of LLM-generated prose, the critique of Searle’s position stands undiminished. If Searle’s anti-mechanistic arguments can arise from mechanism, perhaps the distinction between "real understanding" and its mere simulation is not just unprovable—it is ultimately meaningless.

Mary is a brilliant scientist who is, for whatever reason, forced to investigate the world from a vividly coloured room using a colour television monitor. She is familiar with every colour—including the shades of the grey-scale spectrum. She learns about the grey-scale colours from some of the objects in her room, as well as by observing rocks, blackberries, snow, and so forth, via her monitor. There is an important restriction: she only has access to highly coloured imagery. For example, she never gets to see any black-and-white film, photography, or art—instead being provided with perfectly colourised versions. She is also deprived of naturally occurring black-and-white-reminiscent scenery, such as moonlit landscapes. In short, everything she sees is vividly coloured.

Mary specialises in the neurophysiology of vision. She takes a particular interest in how ordinary humans interact with black-and-white photo and film material. She learns, let us suppose, all the physical information there is to obtain about what goes on when an ordinary person becomes absorbed in Hitchcock’s Psycho or views a black and white photograph of a raspberry bush laden with ripe raspberries. She discovers, for example, just which wavelength and luminosity combinations from such a photo stimulate the retina and exactly how this produces via the central nervous system the contraction of the vocal cords and expulsion of air from the lungs that results in the utterance: “I love the old, classic feel of this black and white photo. It reminds me of photos from my grandmother’s childhood, an era long gone. What kind of bush is this? It’s hard to see—oh, is that a raspberry? It’s quite hard to tell, isn’t it?”.

What will happen when Mary is released and gets to see the original version of Psycho? Or if her captors inform her that she will undergo surgery to alter her eyes so that she sees everything in black-and-white, and she then wakes up out in the world? Will Mary learn something new?

Mary already knew what it was like to see all the different shades of grey. Yet it seems just obvious that if she is released into a world that appears completely void of colour, something she has never seen before, she will learn something new. But Mary already knew all the physical information about seeing black and white, and she already knew what it is like to see all the grey-scale colours. Ergo, there is more to have than that—whatever it may be—or else intuition-invoking thought experiments are just not reliable.
