When I began doing bridging work,
I thought I understood many of the issues I cared about.

Mostly, I saw them from one side of the political landscape.

I wouldn’t have described it that way at the time.
It was simply the world as I understood it.

The people around me tended to see things similarly.
We shared many of the same concerns, read many of the same things, and asked many of the same questions.

Then I began working closely with someone who saw the world very differently.

At first, I thought the task was to understand his point of view.

Here is how I see it.

Here is how he sees it.

Two perspectives, side by side.

But over time, something else began happening.

I started noticing things I hadn’t been taking into account.

The strange thing is, I hadn’t known I wasn’t taking them into account.

When the frame is all we can see,
we mistake it for the whole picture.

And then we make assumptions from that frame.

We decide who is being harmed.
Who is responsible.
What is fair.
What the problem is.
What should be done about it.

Those conclusions may make perfect sense within the frame.

Until the frame gets bigger.

A policy intended to protect one group might create unintended consequences for another.

Trying to be fair to one group might be unfair to another.

A solution that addressed one kind of harm might create a different kind of harm somewhere else.

The more I took in, the harder it became to keep the perspectives neatly separated.

They began to inform one another.

I wasn’t simply learning how people with different views saw things.

The picture itself was getting bigger.

More people were affected.

More concerns.

More causes and consequences.

More things that needed protecting.

My understanding wasn’t only becoming deeper.

It was becoming wider.

Taking more into account didn’t necessarily mean giving everything equal weight.

It meant there was more to take into account before I could feel more confident that I understood what I was looking at.

And something surprising happened.

The additional complexity didn’t leave me seeing everything as hopelessly complicated.

Over time, a different kind of coherence began to emerge.
Things began to make more sense.
I began to see how the different pieces belonged together.

Relationships I hadn’t noticed before became visible:

How one person’s solution could become another person’s problem.
How competing concerns could both be legitimate.
How changing one part of a system could affect parts that seemed far removed from it.

The issue I had started with hadn’t changed.

But the boundaries of what I was taking into account had.

And I had changed, too.

I was becoming a different understander.

Maybe this is another way that understanding grows.

We look more deeply at what’s already in the picture.

But we also begin noticing what’s been left outside the frame.

And sometimes the question is simply:

What else needs to be taken into account?

In the last essay, I wrote about the hidden tattoos in the TV series, Blindspot.

The clues weren’t missing.

They had been occupying the same space all along.

There’s a word for that:

Superimposed.

One thing laid over another, so that both occupy the same space.

But I’m beginning to think superimposition describes something about understanding, too.

I’ve been rereading journals I wrote decades ago.
The words haven’t changed.
The events they describe haven’t changed.

But I have.

Somewhere along the way,
I became a different understander.

I can see now how some painful experiences shaped what I came to expect from men and from male-female relationships. The experiences were real. But without realizing it, I carried what I learned from them into experiences that came later.

Reading the journals now, I can see things I couldn’t see then.

What I once experienced as indifference or rejection sometimes looks different.
I can now see care, concern, even attempts to protect me that I couldn’t recognize at the time.

And I can see myself differently too.

I wasn’t always the hero of the stories I told myself.
Nor was I always the victim.
My own behaviors and motivations were sometimes more complicated than I understood them to be.
None of this erases what I experienced then.

But it adds layers that change the whole picture.

The past hasn’t changed.

But how I understand it has.

I notice something similar when I listen to music.

As my hearing has diminished a little, I sometimes don’t recognize a familiar song right away.
I’m hearing the music, but not enough of the individual instruments.

Then I turn up the volume.

More of the threads become audible.

And suddenly I know exactly what I’m hearing.

Nothing was added to the song. Those sounds had been there all along.

But once I can hear more of them, I don’t simply hear more sounds.

I hear the whole song differently.

Maybe understanding works something like that.

We tend to imagine that learning is additive.

We know one thing.

Then we learn another.

And another.

As though understanding were a stack of information we keep making taller.

But sometimes a new layer does something else.

It changes the relationship among the layers that were already there.

What felt like rejection may still have been rejection, but now we can also see the desire to protect us within it.

What looked like a successful policy may still have accomplished something important, while another layer reveals costs we hadn’t seen.

What we believed about an experience in our past may remain true—and yet mean something different within a larger understanding of our lives.

The new layer doesn’t necessarily erase the old one.

It reorganizes it.

And perhaps this is one of the ways understanding itself grows.

Not simply by accumulating more.
What we discover now changes what we thought we already knew.
Each new layer can reorganize the meaning of all the others.

The next time you discover something that doesn’t quite fit what you already understand, you might wonder:

How might this layer change the whole picture?

There’s one more twist.

Near the end of the television series Blindspot, the investigators make a startling discovery.

The elaborate tattoos they’ve been using to solve crimes aren’t all there is.

Hidden beneath some of them are other tattoos.

The hidden tattoos didn’t become visible because the detectives looked harder.

They became visible because they discovered a different way of seeing.

The clues weren’t missing.

They had been occupying the same space.

All along.

At the same time.

They existed simultaneously.

That image stayed with me because I began to realize how often we experience life the same way.

We usually assume we understand what’s happening.

But more often than we realize, we’re seeing only one of several layers occupying the same space.

A parent’s criticism can also be an expression of fear.

A painful experience can also become the source of wisdom.

A business can create opportunity while also producing unintended harm.

A political disagreement can also be about different perceptions of what needs protecting.

These aren’t necessarily competing realities.

They’re often different layers of the same reality.

The challenge isn’t choosing one layer over another.

It’s recognizing that more than one may be present at once.

Discovering another layer doesn’t make every perspective equally accurate.

It makes our understanding more complete.

I think many of our deepest disagreements begin here.

We become so captivated by one layer that the others almost disappear.

Not because they’re absent.

Because our attention has settled.

Looking through different lenses isn’t valuable simply because it gives us more perspectives.

It’s valuable because different lenses illuminate different layers of the same world.

Each new layer doesn’t replace what we could already see.

It changes how we understand the whole.

The clues weren’t missing.

They had been occupying the same space all along.

The next time you’re certain you understand what’s happening,
pause for a moment and ask:

What other layer might I not be seeing?

In my last essay, I wrote that seeing clearly requires more than looking through multiple lenses.

Here’s why.

I’ve recently begun rereading journals I wrote more than forty years ago.

I expected to revisit old memories.

Instead, I found myself seeing something entirely different.

I wasn’t just remembering the past.

I was seeing it through everything that had happened since.

Experiences I’d had decades later were quietly changing how I understood experiences I’d had decades earlier.

Nothing in the journals had changed.

I had.

I wondered why.

Then I remembered the television series Blindspot.

The premise is intriguing. A woman is found in Times Square with no memory of who she is. Her body is covered from head to toe with elaborate tattoos.

The FBI soon discovers that each tattoo is a clue to a future crime.

At first, they assume each mystery can be solved by deciphering the tattoo itself.

But that’s rarely what happens.

A tattoo leads to an old photograph.

The photograph leads to a military operation.

The operation leads to someone’s childhood.

The childhood leads to a political conspiracy.

Each discovery adds another layer. And with each new layer, what first looked confusing becomes more coherent.

The mystery isn’t solved because they looked harder at the original clue.

It’s solved because they discovered another layer.

I realized that this isn’t just how television mysteries work.

It’s often how understanding itself grows.

We tend to think understanding comes from looking harder.

But often it comes from looking deeper.

A person’s behavior is one layer.

Their history is another.

Their fears.

Their relationships.

Their culture.

None of these erase what we first saw.

They help us understand it.

The same is true of the issues we argue about.

A policy isn’t just its stated intention.

It’s also economics.

History.

Human behavior.

Unintended consequences.

Tradeoffs.

Again and again I’ve found that the most useful question isn’t,

Who’s right?

It’s,

What layer haven’t we noticed yet?

We often imagine that understanding grows by collecting more information.

Sometimes it does.

But just as often, it grows because we discover another layer of what was already there.

The first layer wasn’t wrong.

It simply wasn’t the whole story.

That’s why multiple lenses matter.

Different lenses don’t exist to give us different opinions.

They help us discover different layers of the world.

The world comes layered.

The first thing we see is rarely the whole story.

The next time something seems obvious, wonder:

What layer haven’t I noticed yet?

People sometimes assume that what I’m trying to do is help people arrive at better conclusions.

I’m not.

I’m trying to help us develop better ways of seeing.

Because none of us experiences the world directly.

We all experience it through lenses.

Our experiences.

Our fears.

Our identities.

Our values.

Our hopes.

Our blind spots.

Those lenses shape what we notice, what we overlook, and what feels obviously true.

The goal isn’t to get rid of them. That’s impossible.

The goal is to become aware that we’re looking through them.

Many of our disagreements aren’t simply about facts.

They’re about which parts of the situation our lenses allow us to see.

That’s why two thoughtful, well-intentioned people can look at the same situation and reach very different conclusions.

Not because one is right and the other is wrong.

But because each is seeing something the other isn’t.

The invitation is to become curious enough to ask:

Which blind spots might be shaping my view?

And what might someone else be seeing that I don’t?

The solution isn’t to replace one lens with another.

It’s to develop the capacity to hold more than one lens at once—to move fluidly from the smallest details to the broader picture, across every scale in between.

Like strengthening a muscle, this capacity develops gradually with practice.

No single lens reveals the whole picture.

But together they reveal more than any one can alone.

The more of the whole picture we understand, the wiser our decisions become.

And when we see more of the whole picture, we don’t just make better decisions.

We become better partners in solving the problems we share.

That’s why Building Bridgers isn’t about teaching people what conclusions to reach.

It’s about recognizing that there’s always more to see.

Because the world is too complex for a single way of seeing.

But over time I’ve realized something surprising.

Even looking through multiple lenses isn’t quite enough.

Because there’s more to seeing clearly than changing perspectives.

In Part 1, I suggested that facts don’t arrive in an empty room.
So ... what’s already in the room?

We are.

Long before the facts arrive, each of us brings something different:

Our experiences.
How we see ourselves.
The people we trust.
The stories we tell ourselves.
Our assumptions.
Our emotions.
Our certainty.

No wonder two thoughtful people can look at the same issue and come away with completely different conclusions.

For years, I tried to have better conversations about politics.
I read more. I asked better questions. I searched for stronger evidence.

Sometimes it helped.
Mostly it didn’t.

Because I eventually realized we weren’t just discussing issues.

We were bringing our very human nature into the conversation.

When someone encounters information that challenges something important to them, they aren’t simply weighing the evidence.

It can stir up uncertainty, defensiveness, fear, or the sense that something deeply personal is at stake.

Our minds don’t simply process information.

They protect.
They simplify.
They explain.
They justify.

And they do it so quickly that it doesn’t feel like an interpretation.

It feels as though we’re simply seeing things as they are.

That realization changed everything for me.

I became less interested in what people believed and more interested in what happened inside them when those beliefs were challenged.

That’s when I began to notice the same human tendencies showing up everywhere.

We seek certainty when the world feels uncertain.

We look to our groups for cues about what is safe, true, and acceptable.

We reason from conclusions we’ve already reached.

We mistake our interpretation for reality.

We all have blind spots we cannot see on our own.

We follow our tribal instincts without realizing it.

None of this makes us bad people.
It makes us human.

And because it’s human, it applies to all of us.

That’s why I no longer think our biggest challenge is political disagreement.

I think it’s learning to notice the invisible forces shaping how we see.

Because before we can think clearly about complex issues,
we need the capacity to stay present with complexity itself.

The capacity to become curious instead of defensive.
To notice when we’re oversimplifying.
To recognize that another perspective might reveal something we’ve missed.

It means holding our conclusions lightly enough that reality still has a chance to teach us something.

Politics still matters.
Policy still matters.

But I’ve come to believe that if we want better conversations—and better solutions—we have to begin one layer deeper.

Not with opinions.
With the human operating system that produces them.

That’s why I don’t start with politics.
I start with capacity.

Because the broader our view, the wiser our solutions become.

See it clearly. Solve it well.

People sometimes ask why I spend so much time talking about perception, certainty, identity, and human nature
before talking about politics.

Why not just jump straight to the issues?

Because I’ve found that if I start with politics, the room quickly fills with dueling facts, emotional reasoning, and tribal instincts.

People aren’t simply discussing a problem.

They’re defending an identity.

Protecting a worldview.

Reasoning from conclusions they’ve already reached.

Sometimes the reasoning sounds like this:

“I feel like it’s true, therefore it must be true.”

Or:

“People I trust believe this, so it must be right.”

Facts matter, of course.

But facts don’t arrive in an empty room.

They enter minds already shaped by experiences, how we see ourselves, our circle, our biases, our emotions, and our certainty.

A friend of mine who serves as a judge once told me that he’s continually surprised by how many jurors seem to have already decided on the verdict before they’ve even heard the evidence.

That observation stayed with me.

Because jurors aren’t unusual.

They’re human.

And so are the rest of us.

We all tend to settle into a story early and then interpret new information through the lens we’ve already adopted.

What we often call disagreement is sometimes something else entirely: people reasoning from different information, different experiences, different assumptions, or different stories about how the world works.

Most of us don’t experience our views as interpretations.

They feel like reality.

And once something feels like reality, disagreement doesn’t simply feel like disagreement.

It can feel like ignorance.

Blindness.

Bad faith.

Threat.

Which raises a question that interests me more than politics itself:

How do human beings come to believe what they believe?

That’s why I don’t start with politics.

Before I ask: What do you think?

I want to ask:

How are you thinking?

Because the goal isn’t to eliminate disagreement.

It’s to create the kind of conversation where we can learn from it.

And perhaps that’s where better conversations—and better solutions—actually begin.

One of the clearest signs that we’ve stopped learning is
that nothing surprises us anymore.

Every new piece of information fits neatly into what we already believe.
Every event confirms our existing worldview.
Every disagreement proves the other side is wrong.

When that happens, we may not be seeing clearly.

We may be living inside a closed system.

Closed systems are comforting.

They reduce uncertainty.
They provide a sense of stability.
They help us feel oriented in a complicated world.

But they come with a cost.

When we already know what everything means,
there is no room left for discovery.
No room for correction.
No room for updating what we know.

The world is constantly revealing things that don’t fit our expectations.

The question is whether we’re available to notice.

Sometimes we encounter information
that doesn’t fit our understanding.

Instead of becoming curious, we explain it away.
We dismiss the source.
We find reasons it doesn’t count.
We make it fit the story we already have.

In other words, we protect the picture rather than updating it.

Most of us imagine that seeing clearly means becoming more certain.

But what if seeing clearly sometimes means becoming
more surprise-able?

More willing to encounter something that doesn’t fit.
More willing to pause before reaching for an explanation.
More willing to pause before dismissing it.
More willing to say:
“Huh. I never thought about it that way before.”

That moment is often the doorway to learning.

Not because surprise is pleasant.

But because surprise is evidence
that something new has entered the picture.

A detail.
A perspective.
A consequence.
A piece of information
that our previous understanding couldn’t fully account for.

The goal isn’t to become endlessly uncertain.

The goal is to remain reachable.

Reachable by new information.
Reachable by other perspectives.
Reachable by what we haven’t seen yet.

Because none of us knows the whole story.

About anything.

Perhaps one of the most useful postures toward life is this:

Expect the unexpected.

And when it arrives, let yourself be surprised.

Most of us don’t realize how attached
we become to our own conclusions.

Not just politically.
Personally, too.

We become attached to our interpretations.
Predictions.
Stories about other people.
Stories about ourselves.

And once the mind settles on a conclusion, something in us relaxes.

Now I know what’s happening.
Now I know who they are.
Now I know what this means.

Certainty feels stabilizing.
Even when we’re mistaken.

Not because something is wrong with us.
Because human beings are wired to seek coherence, certainty, and stability.

Especially when other people around us share the same certainty.
There’s comfort in like-mindedness.
Relief in shared narratives.
Safety in belonging to a group that sees the world the way we do.

And often, groups don’t just share beliefs.
They share blind spots.

But that comfort can become its own kind of trap.

Because once belonging becomes tied to a particular interpretation, updating our view no longer feels merely intellectual.

It can feel social.
Emotional.
Even existential.

But life keeps moving.
New information appears.
We hear another perspective.
Something we overlooked becomes visible.

And suddenly the story we were so sure about no longer fits as cleanly as it once did.

The difficulty is that pivoting can feel costly.

It often requires letting go of the emotional security the original conclusion provided.

But there’s another option:
To become poised to pivot.

Not spineless.
Not endlessly uncertain.
Not incapable of conviction.

Just flexible enough to keep updating our understanding as new information emerges.

A person poised to pivot can say:
“Based on what I know right now, this is what makes sense to me.
But I may not be seeing the whole picture yet.”

That kind of flexibility is harder than it sounds.

Especially in a culture that often treats changing your mind as weakness.

But in complex systems, rigidity becomes a liability.

Conditions and contexts change.
New consequences emerge.
Partial truths collide with other partial truths.

And if we cannot pivot, we become trapped inside outdated maps and closed systems.

A closed system forms when information that supports the story gets absorbed and information that challenges it gets pushed away.

New facts arrive.
The same conclusions remain.

We can see this in relationships.

We decide someone is selfish, uncaring, impossible.
Then later discover fear, grief, insecurity, exhaustion, or misunderstanding underneath what we thought we saw.

We can see it in public life.
People become attached to narratives even after the situation becomes more complicated than the original story.

A wise society needs the capacity to pivot.

And so do wise individuals.

But this kind of flexibility does not happen automatically.

To stay open when our instincts want certainty …
To widen the frame instead of collapsing into defensiveness …
We have to continue growing our capacity.

And politics aside,
this kind of growth deeply enriches our personal lives too.
It helps us navigate our relationships
with greater flexibility and less defensiveness.

Learning to pivot gracefully doesn’t just help us navigate polarization.
It helps us become more mature human beings.

Being poised to pivot doesn’t mean abandoning discernment.
It means staying more committed to understanding than defending.

More interested in seeing clearly than preserving an identity, position, or conclusion at all costs.

Sometimes the strongest people
are not the ones who hold the hardest line.
Sometimes they’re the ones with enough inner stability to look again.

To update.
To widen the frame.

To admit:
“Something I didn’t previously see has become visible now.”

That isn’t weakness.
That’s maturity.

Because life keeps revealing more than our first conclusions can hold.

One of the things I love about certain documentary films is their ability to interrupt assumptions.

Not because they tell us what to think.

But because they sometimes reveal that the stories we’ve been carrying about other people are incomplete.

Over the years I’ve noticed that many of us walk around with mental shorthand for groups of people.

Liberals.
Conservatives.
Evangelicals.
Academics.
Environmentalists.
Business owners.

The shorthand isn’t always entirely wrong. But it is almost always incomplete.

Human beings have a way of overflowing the categories we place them in.

That’s one reason I’ve chosen two documentaries for this year’s Better Together Film Festival that I think of as “stereotype busters.”

Neither film asks viewers what to think.

Both invite us to look again.

My Omaha explores the relationship between a liberal son and his conservative father, revealing the human stories beneath political divisions.

I hesitated before selecting this film because its title alone invites assumptions. What I appreciate about it is that it introduces us to people who don’t fit neatly into common narratives about conservatives and climate concerns.

Some things are difficult to see because they’re far away.

And some things are difficult to see because they’re too close.

So close.
So familiar.
So woven into daily life that they stop looking like interpretations at all.

They simply feel like reality.

We stop noticing the assumptions inside our thinking.

The stories inside our reactions.
The fears inside our certainty.
The habits inside our relationships.
The ways groups quietly shape what we pay attention to — and what we overlook.

The most powerful forces shaping us are often hiding in plain sight.

Not because anyone is trying to hide them.

But because humans adapt to what becomes normal.

A family adapts to tension.
A culture adapts to outrage.
A political group adapts to oversimplification.
A person adapts to anxiety, defensiveness, or loneliness.

And eventually the pattern becomes invisible from the inside.

Sometimes clarity arrives suddenly.

A comment lands differently.
A relationship changes.
A conversation cracks something open.
A film unsettles us.
Someone asks a question we can’t easily dismiss.

And for a moment we see something we hadn’t seen before.

Not because the truth suddenly appeared.

Because we looked again.

When this happens to me, I’m often reminded of the movie, The Sixth Sense.

Once I got to the ending, I realized the clues were there from the beginning.
The information didn’t change.
But suddenly I saw everything very differently.

Life can work this way too.

That’s one of the strangest things about human perception:

Often the information was there all along.
And yet we didn’t have the capacity to see it clearly.

Sometimes we need distance.
Sometimes we need calm.
Sometimes we need another perspective.
Sometimes we need enough safety inside ourselves to loosen our grip on certainty.

Because if a perspective feels threatening, the mind usually stops exploring and starts defending.

And when that happens, whole parts of reality can disappear from view.

This happens in relationships.
In families.
In political tribes.
In institutions.
In entire cultures.

Groups don’t only shape what we believe.

They also shape what becomes difficult to notice.

That’s why viewpoint diversity matters.

Not because other people always have the answer.
But because other people can sometimes see what we cannot see from inside our own position.

Different people notice different things.

One person sees harm.
Another sees trade-offs.
One sees compassion.
Another sees incentives.
One sees freedom.
Another sees instability.
One sees progress.
Another sees what might break.

Most conflicts are not between people seeing everything clearly and people seeing nothing clearly.

They’re often collisions between partial truths.

The trouble starts when one partial truth tries to become the whole map.

Looking again does not guarantee agreement.

But it increases the chances that we’re responding to reality more fully instead of reacting from a narrow slice of it.

And maybe that’s part of maturity.

Not becoming certain that we finally see everything clearly.

But becoming more aware of how much can remain hidden — even when it’s right in front of us.

So we pause.

We look again.

And little by little, more becomes visible.

Transparent shadows moving when my eyes move.

For a moment, it feels like they’re out there in the world.
But they’re not.
They’re inside my own eyes.

I’ve been thinking lately about how often human perception works this way.
We tend to assume we’re reacting directly to reality.

But often, we’re reacting through the lens of our own nervous systems, histories, fears, assumptions, identities, and emotional states.

Not because we’re bad.
Not because we’re stupid.

Because we’re human.

The strange thing about floaters is that once you notice them,
you can’t fully un-notice them.
And the more you focus on them, the more dominant they can become.

Something similar happens in human thinking.

A fear.
A narrative.
An assumption.
An emotional wound.
A certainty.

It drifts across our perception.

Soon, it doesn’t just feel like part of our perception.
It feels like reality itself.

And usually, we don’t realize we’re looking through something.
We think we’re simply seeing clearly.

But another strange thing happens with floaters over time.

You adapt.

Not because they disappear completely.
But because your brain slowly learns not to organize your attention around them.
They stop becoming the center of your seeing.

I think there’s something important in that.

Human beings won’t ever completely eliminate distortion, bias, emotional reasoning, fear, or projection.

We won’t ever see with perfect clarity.

But perhaps maturity isn’t about achieving perfect perception.

Maybe it’s about becoming less captured by what drifts across our vision.

Less fused with every reaction.
Less hypnotized by every certainty.
Less organized around every fear.

More able to pause.
More able to look again.

That’s part of what makes human conflict so difficult.

Two people can look at the same situation and genuinely see different things.

Not because one person is lying.
Not because one person is evil.

But because perception is never completely clean.

We all see through lenses we didn’t consciously choose.

And sometimes other people can help us see what our own lenses hide.

Our experiences shape us.
Our environments shape us.
Our fears shape us.
Our groups shape us.
Our past hurts shape us.

And often, those influences become nearly invisible to us.

Like floaters.

What’s interesting is that floaters become most visible against bright, open backgrounds.

The sky.
A blank wall.
Light.

I think something similar happens psychologically.

Sometimes distortion becomes most visible not when we stop thinking …
… but when we genuinely try to see clearly.

That can be unsettling.

Because it means certainty becomes harder to maintain.

It means realizing:
Maybe I’m not seeing this as clearly as I think I am.

I don’t think this realization is about weakness.
It’s the beginning of wisdom.

Not cynicism.
Not paralysis.
Not giving up on truth.

Humility.

The understanding that none of us sees reality directly.

We see reality through a human mind trying its best to make sense of distorted information.

And maybe maturity is not about achieving perfect perception.

Maybe it’s becoming more aware of the lens we bring.
Maybe it’s learning to pause before assuming our perception is the whole picture.
Maybe it’s developing the capacity to look again.

Because the clearer we think we see…
the easier it is to mistake the floaters for the world.

Before 2017, I voted the way many of us do.

I trusted my side.
I didn’t do much independent research.
I assumed I was seeing things clearly.

Then I started working on bridging the political divide.

And something uncomfortable became obvious:
I had blind spots. (We all do.)

To even hear perspectives I had dismissed before,
I had to build capacity—
the ability to stay open, to think critically,
to consider that I might not be seeing the whole picture…
and that I might be wrong.

Over time, something shifted.

I didn’t just change what I thought.
I began to change how I think.
And I started to see more of what was actually happening.

To think clearly about policy, I had to learn a few things first:

Every policy involves trade-offs. There are no magic bullets.

Good intentions are not enough. When they meet complex systems, outcomes can diverge from what we hoped.

There are always unintended consequences. The question isn’t whether they exist—it’s whether we’ve thought broadly enough to anticipate them.

Before removing something, we need to understand why it was put in effect in the first place. What problem had it been solving?

Solving one problem often creates another. Systems are interconnected—we’re rarely dealing with just one variable.

Most issues involve valid concerns that collide.

Understanding complex issues requires access to multiple perspectives—because no one sees the whole picture.

And most importantly:
If we don’t define the problem accurately,
we won’t be solving the problem we think we are.

So instead of debating policy the way we usually do—
who’s right, who’s wrong, what should be done—
we’re going to try something different.

We’re going to start looking at past policy decisions in future essays and in-person classes.

Not to re-argue them.
But to understand them.

We’ll explore:
· what the problem was
· what decisions were made
· and what actually happened next

Where did things work?
Where did they backfire?
What trade-offs emerged?
What was missed?

Even something that seems straightforward—
like banning plastic bags—
becomes more complex when you look at what happens next.

That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t act.

It means we need to see more of what we’re acting on—
before we act.

And as we begin to see more of what’s actually going on,
the conversation starts to shift—
from taking sides
to understanding the systems at play.

Because if we’re not seeing clearly…
we may be solving the wrong problem.

See it clearly. Solve it well.

We do it all the time.

Someone says something—
and within seconds, they’re either reasonable or ridiculous.
A public figure makes a decision—and they’re either good or corrupt.
An issue appears—and we know which side we’re on.

It doesn’t feel like a choice.
It feels like we’re seeing clearly.

But something else is happening.

In psychology, there’s a term for this: splitting.

It’s the mind’s tendency to divide the world into opposites—
good or bad, right or wrong, trustworthy or dangerous.
It simplifies things quickly.
It reduces ambiguity.
It gives us a sense of clarity and control.

It’s deeply human.

When something feels uncertain or emotionally charged,
the mind organizes quickly.
Splitting is one of the fastest ways to do that.
It lowers the discomfort of not knowing.

But it comes at a cost.

Because reality is rarely divided that cleanly.

Most people are not purely one thing or the other.
Most situations contain competing truths—
or truths we haven’t yet learned to hold at the same time.

Most problems involve trade-offs we don’t fully see at first.
And the groups we sort people into are far more complex than the stories we tell about them.

But in that moment, all of that complexity collapses.
We don’t just simplify the world.
We lose access to parts of it.

We tend to see in black and white.
But much of reality lives in the gray—
the overlap—where more than one thing can be true at the same time.
It’s not usually the first place we look.
But it’s often where more of the truth lives.

And this doesn’t just shape how we see individuals.
It’s one of the deepest foundations of our political polarization.

When issues get framed as good versus bad, the space in between disappears.
When one side is seen as entirely right, the other becomes entirely wrong.
And once that happens, curiosity starts to feel unnecessary—or even dangerous.

We stop asking: What might I be missing?
We stop seeing the full picture.

Not because we don’t care.
But because it feels like we already understand what’s going on.

Splitting doesn’t feel like distortion.
It feels like clarity.
That’s what makes it so powerful.
And so invisible.

But here’s the shift.
The goal isn’t to eliminate this tendency.
It’s to notice it—while it’s happening.

That moment someone moves from “I disagree” to “they’re completely wrong.”
That moment a situation goes from complicated to obvious.
That moment certainty rushes in and everything else drops away.

You might begin to recognize it:
Something is happening here.
And instead of immediately following it, you pause.

Just a little.

You nudge yourself toward nuance.
Toward the overlap.
Not by forcing a new conclusion.
But by widening the frame.

What else might be going on here?
What might I not be seeing yet?
What concerns are colliding in this situation?

This doesn’t mean abandoning your perspective.
It means loosening your grip on the idea that it’s the whole picture.
Because the more we can hold complexity, the more we can actually see.
And the more we can see, the less we need the world to collapse into simple categories to feel stable.

Nuance doesn’t always feel comfortable.

It asks more of us.
A little more patience.
A little more curiosity.
A little more capacity.

But it gives us something back.
A wider view.
A more accurate picture.
And often, a different way forward.

Because when we stop dividing the world so quickly…
We don’t lose clarity.
We begin to see more of what’s actually there.

Public debates often begin with a simple story.

One side is trying to do the right thing.
The other side is causing the problem.

The story feels clear.
And clarity feels good.

But many of the most difficult issues we face don’t actually begin with villains.

They begin with colliding concerns.

One group may be trying to protect safety.
Another may be trying to protect freedom.

One group may focus on urgent harm.
Another may worry about unintended consequences.

When we only see one side of the collision, the other side can start to look irrational, uncaring, or even dangerous.

But often something else is happening.
Most people are not trying to destroy the world.

They’re trying to protect something they care about.
And when different concerns collide, the result can look like a moral battle—even when it isn’t.

Sometimes the collision exists within the value itself.

A student once said to me,
“I realized that by trying to be fair to one group, I was being unfair to another.”

In that moment, what looked like a simple question of fairness became something more complex.

Different forms of fairness were colliding.

And until we can see that clearly, it’s hard to even define the problem we’re trying to solve.

This is where polarization often begins.

If we believe the other side is simply malicious or ignorant, the conversation shifts from problem-solving to moral judgment.

Motives get assigned.
Curiosity disappears.

But when we pause and ask a different question, something interesting can happen.

Instead of asking:
“Which side is right?”
we can ask:
“What concerns are colliding here?”

That question does something subtle but powerful.

It slows the rush to judgment.
It widens the frame.
And it allows us to hold two truths at once.

Now we’re no longer assuming one side cares and the other side doesn’t.

We’re exploring how different concerns may be pulling in different directions at the same time.

This doesn’t mean every position is equally wise or equally supported by evidence.

But it does mean that understanding the concerns involved is usually the first step toward solving complex problems.

Because when we misread what people are trying to protect, we often end up arguing past each other—
or proposing solutions that ignore part of reality.

This is especially true in public policy, where many of the hardest issues arise when legitimate concerns pull in different directions.

The practice is simple.
Notice the clash.

Ask yourself:
What concerns might be colliding here?

When we do that, debates start to look different.

Less like battles between good and evil,
and more like attempts—sometimes clumsy, sometimes thoughtful—
to protect different parts of a complicated reality.

And that shift can open the door to something polarization makes very difficult:
understanding the problem well enough to be able to find effective solutions.

We often jump straight to the hardest questions.

What should we do?
What’s the correct solution?
Which side is right?

But complex problems don’t just require better answers.
They require a different kind of thinking.

And that kind of thinking depends on something we rarely talk about:

Capacity.

The capacity to notice our reactions without immediately acting on them.
To question our assumptions.
To be curious when something doesn’t fit our views.
To hold more than one perspective at a time—without rushing to certainty.

Without capacity, complexity doesn’t open us up to the bigger picture.

It overwhelms us.

And when that happens, something predictable follows.

We simplify.
We take sides.
We defend our position.
We insist on certainty.

Not because the issue is simple—
but because our internal capacity to hold complexity is limited.

So we reduce the problem to something we can manage.

A headline.
A narrative.
A good guy. A bad guy.
A solution that feels clear and decisive.

And for a moment, it works.

We feel oriented again.
Certain.
Stable.

But often, we’ve traded accuracy for relief.
We mistake what feels true for what is true.

Because complex problems don’t disappear when we simplify them.
They just become harder to solve.

This is why debates so often go nowhere.

It’s not just that people disagree about solutions.
They have different levels of capacity to see the complexity in front of them.

So the conversation stays stuck at the surface—
positions, conclusions, certainty—
without ever building the conditions needed to understand the problem well.

What if we reversed the order?

Before asking What should we do? we asked:
Do we have the capacity to see clearly what’s actually happening?

Because understanding doesn’t begin with answers.
It begins with how we’re seeing.
And how we’re seeing depends on the internal conditions we bring to the problem.

When capacity grows, something shifts.

We can stay with questions a little longer.
We can take in more perspectives without immediately rejecting them.
We can see more of what’s actually there—without shutting down or becoming rigid.

And from there, better thinking becomes possible.
Not because we tried harder to find the right answer—
but because we changed the inner conditions under which we think.

First capacity.

I used to think the answer was to push through.

If something felt difficult or confusing—especially when I was trying to take in new ideas or think about something in a new way—I would try harder. Concentrate more.
Stay with it longer.
I assumed that if I just put in enough effort, clarity would come.

But often, the opposite happened.

The harder I tried to think, the more tangled everything became.
Ideas blurred together.
What had felt almost within reach slipped further away.
I would sit there, stuck—trying to force something that wouldn’t come.

And then, almost by accident, I started doing something different.

I would stop.

Not take a quick break while still thinking about it.
Not push it to the side while it ran in the background.
I mean actually step away—from the problem, from the effort, from trying to figure it out.

And something strange began to happen.

Later—while walking, doing something unrelated, or after a good night’s sleep—I would find that what had felt confusing was no longer confusing.
The pieces had arranged themselves.
What I couldn’t force into clarity had quietly become clear.

Over time, I began to see the pattern.

Overwhelm wasn’t a sign that I needed to try harder.
It was a sign that I had reached my capacity in that moment.

There’s a point where effort stops helping—and starts getting in the way.
Where trying to hold everything at once creates more noise instead of less.
Where pushing doesn’t produce clarity, but prevents it.

What I had been calling “thinking” was often just strain.
Clarity, I’ve learned, doesn’t come from forcing more in.

It comes from allowing things to settle.

By stepping back long enough for what matters to separate from what doesn’t.
For patterns to emerge without being crowded out by effort.

I still feel the pull to push through. That habit runs deep.

But now I notice the moment when things start to scramble—when clarity slips instead of sharpens.
It feels as if my brain stops working.

And more often than not, I take that as my cue.

Not to try harder.

But to stop.

Slowly but surely, that’s how we build the capacity to hold things clearly.

How we misread the world—and how we can see more clearly

We usually assume groups are held together by shared beliefs.

Political beliefs.
Religious beliefs.
Ideological beliefs.

But something else may be just as powerful — and often more invisible.

Shared blind spots.

Over time, people learn — often unconsciously — which observations will be welcomed and which will create discomfort. Which questions signal loyalty, and which ones signal disloyalty.

The things members of a group learn not to see.

Or not to question.

Or not to talk about.

So certain things gradually disappear from view.

Not because they aren’t real.

But because seeing them would threaten the story that holds the group together.

Psychologist Jonathan Haidt describes this dynamic as “binding and blinding.”

The same forces that bind people together also blind them.

Belonging requires alignment.

And alignment often requires not noticing certain things.

Or explaining them away.

Or quietly looking the other direction.

You can see this pattern almost anywhere.

Groups often overlook contradictions on their own side while spotting them instantly on the other.

Evidence that complicates the shared story can be minimized or explained away.

Information that confirms the narrative spreads quickly.

Information that challenges it spreads slowly — or not at all.

Over time, certain questions simply stop being asked.

Certain possibilities quietly disappear from view.

Over time, groups don’t just share beliefs.
They share what goes unquestioned.

No group is immune.

One common blind spot appears when groups begin to assume the other side has nothing of value to contribute.

Once that belief takes hold, curiosity collapses.

Listening stops.

When we become certain the other side has nothing to teach us, we’ve stopped trying to understand the problem itself.

And the possibility that the other side might be protecting something legitimate disappears from view.

But in complex societies, most conflicts aren’t about good versus evil.

They are about different concerns colliding.

When a group becomes convinced that the other side has nothing worth hearing, that conviction itself becomes a blind spot.

Films sometimes capture this dynamic beautifully.

In 12 Angry Men, eleven jurors initially feel certain the defendant is guilty.
The case seems obvious.

But one juror hesitates.

He isn’t claiming the young man is innocent. He simply asks the group to slow down and examine the evidence more carefully.

At first, the others react with frustration and certainty. Their shared story about the case feels solid.

But as the conversation unfolds, something interesting happens.

The group begins noticing things they had previously ignored.

Details that once seemed obvious begin to look less certain.

Assumptions get questioned.

Pieces of evidence the group had barely noticed suddenly matter.

What changes the room is not that someone proves the opposite story.

It’s that the group slowly becomes able to see things they had overlooked.

Their certainty loosens.

And the blind spots begin to shrink.

The danger with shared blind spots isn’t simply that groups may be wrong.

It’s that the blind spots become invisible to the group itself.

Inside the system, everything can feel coherent.

Certain.

Morally clear.

But that sense of clarity is often maintained by the things that remain outside the frame.

Recognizing this can be uncomfortable.

But it can also be liberating.

Because once we understand that every group has blind spots — including our own — curiosity becomes possible again.

Instead of asking only:
“Why are they so blind?”

We might begin asking:
“What might my group be missing?”

And that question alone can open a little more space for reality to enter.

Sometimes the most important shift isn’t changing our beliefs.
It’s becoming willing to look again.

Two people can look at the same situation and come away with completely different conclusions.

Not because one is lying.
Not because one is stupid.

Different narratives.

We tend to think we’re responding to reality as it is.
But most of the time, we’re responding to the version of reality that makes sense inside the story we’re already in.

Stories help us organize the world.

They tell us:

• what matters

• who’s right

• who’s wrong

• what to pay attention to

• what to ignore

Without them, everything would feel chaotic.

But here’s the part we don’t usually understand:
We think stories help us see.
But they actually filter what we see.

Once a narrative takes hold, it begins to shape interpretation.

We don’t just receive information.
We interpret it through our narrative—
and begin to map that story onto what’s happening.

So what we’re seeing isn’t just the event itself.
It’s the event, plus the meaning we’re projecting onto it.

New information doesn’t arrive neutrally.
It gets sorted, often automatically.

What fits the narrative, we accept.
What challenges it, we explain away.
What threatens it, we reject.

Over time, the narrative feels less like one way of seeing things
and more like reality itself.

This is why two people can see the same facts
and feel certain of completely different things.

They’re not just disagreeing about the facts.
They’re living inside different interpretations of what those facts mean.

Different narratives.

When we try to correct someone…
we often think we’re offering new information.
But what we’re actually doing is bumping up against the narrative that organizes their world.

That’s why it can feel so charged.

Because it’s not just a disagreement about a point.
It can feel like their whole way of understanding and navigating the world is being put in question.

And ... we feel it when it happens to us, too.

That can feel… unsettling.
Disorienting.
A little wobbly.

Because if the narrative starts to loosen,
it’s not just one idea at stake.
It’s the structure that’s been holding things together.

And when something feels wobbly,
the instinct isn’t curiosity.
It’s to steady it.

Which is why people so often, so automatically, defend their positions.

But every once in a while, something else happens.

A pause.
A small opening.
And the thought:
Hmm. I never thought about it that way before.

Most of the time, we don’t even realize we’re inside a story.
A narrative.

It just feels like:
“This is what’s happening.”

But occasionally, something interrupts that.
A moment of confusion.
A detail that doesn’t quite fit.
A perspective we hadn’t considered.

If we’re willing to stay with that moment—
instead of rushing to resolve it—
we get a rare opportunity:
to notice the story we’re in
instead of automatically defending it.

That shift matters.
Because once we can see the narrative,
we’re no longer completely inside it.
We have a little more space.
A little more flexibility.
A little more curiosity.

This doesn’t mean abandoning all narratives.
But it does mean holding them more lightly.
Letting them be useful lenses—
and building the capacity to look through more than one lens at the same time.

So the next time something feels obvious…
certain…
undeniable…
You might pause and ask:
What story am I telling myself right now?
And just as important:
What might I be missing?

Then we can step beyond the story we’re in—and begin to see more of what’s actually there.
