I watched nations arrive.

The delegation from the Democratic Republic of the Congo stepped off the plane in tailored black suits trimmed with leopard print—a tribute to Les Léopards. It was more than style. It was heritage. It was a reminder of La Sape, the Congolese tradition where fashion becomes dignity, self-expression, and quiet resistance.

Then came Cabo Verde.

The players danced together on the plane before they ever touched the ground. Joy traveled with them. And in that moment, millions of people who may have never thought twice about this small island nation suddenly wanted to know more.

That’s the power of culture.

That’s the power of showing up fully as yourself.

These athletes didn’t just bring their talent.

They carried stories.

And maybe that’s what moves me most about the World Cup.

When I watch African-descended players representing countries across Europe and Latin America, I don’t just see elite athletes. I see the unfinished story of colonialism. I see the scars of the transatlantic slave trade. I see migration, displacement, reinvention, and resilience.

Football didn’t write that story.

History did.

The World Cup simply puts it on the world’s biggest stage.

So what if we allowed this tournament to do more than entertain us?

What if it challenged us to become students again?

To ask: Who are these nations beyond their flags? What histories shaped them? What wisdom have they carried through centuries of struggle?

A daughter of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army, born Joanne Deborah Chesimard, Assata was convicted in 1977 under charges soaked in state violence and lies. Two years later, she did the unthinkable: she escaped prison and found her way to Cuba, one of America’s fiercest enemies. There, Fidel Castro gave her what the U.S. never would: political asylum. In Cuba, she raised her daughter, edited for Radio Havana, wrote her searing memoir, and lived with dignity. She was hunted by the FBI yet protected by a nation that understood her fight.

Her story is bigger than exile; it is about the timeless struggle for Black freedom. From enslaved Africans who leapt into the Atlantic rather than surrender, to the maroon communities of Jamaica and Suriname, to San Basilio de Palenque in Colombia, our people have always risked everything for liberation. Assata’s journey is part of that lineage.

Cuba’s embrace of her was no accident. The island, inspired by Haiti’s revolution and Bolívar’s dream, positioned itself as a refuge for the oppressed. While the U.S. branded her a fugitive, Cuba recognized her as what she truly was: a political refugee and a freedom fighter. That contradiction forces us to ask: how many more Black people, across centuries, have had to leave their homelands to breathe free?

And here’s the truth: the fight isn’t over. In an America where some openly dream of resurrecting antebellum hierarchies, Assata reminds us that freedom is never handed over—it is claimed, demanded, and defended. She was a Black woman who named patriarchy in the Panthers, who educated herself and others, who stood unbent in the face of empire. She is blueprint and ancestor, fortitude and femininity fused.

Across the United States, history is under attack. Books are banned, curricula censored, and the stories of Black and Brown people pushed aside. In this climate, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is not just cultural programming—it is a form of resistance. It is a declaration that our students deserve the fullness of America’s story.

From September 15 to October 15, schools have the opportunity to observe Remembrance. The month begins with the independence of Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica. Honoring that history pushes back against the silencing of freedom struggles and affirms that music, food, and dance are not distractions from learning but knowledge in motion.

And this celebration cannot be reduced to demographics. A school does not need a large Latino population to engage. Every student should know the power of Celia Cruz’s cry of Azúcar! for the Afro-Latina community. They should learn the labor of Bracero workers who fed this nation, the sacrifice of Roberto Clemente, the lessons of the Zoot Suit Riots. These stories arm students to resist ignorance and build solidarity.

How Schools Can Celebrate

The question is not if we celebrate, but how. Schools can:

• Morning Announcements: Share a “Did you know?” fact each day about a Latino leader or activist.
  
  

• Student Voice: Empower students to create videos, podcasts, or digital spotlights.
  
  

• Curriculum Connections: Teach

  independence movements, civil rights struggles, and Latinx poets whose words embody survival and hope.
  
  

• Culture in the Halls: Play salsa, bachata, merengue, or reggaetón during lunch; decorate with maps and flags of the Spanish-speaking world.
  
  

• Community Partnerships: Invite performers, partner with local restaurants, or host cultural food days.

Our students inherit a fractured democracy and a school system often more concerned with compliance than culture. By celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month boldly and unapologetically, we model what justice looks like in practice.

When schools celebrate, they tell students, "You are seen." They affirm that history belongs to them. They declare that diversity is not a burden but the soul of education.

In a season of fear, to celebrate is revolutionary. It is joy in action, memory as resistance, and proof that schools can be sanctuaries of truth.

Administrators, the choice is yours: conform to erasure or dare to celebrate. Be bold. Lead with courage. Celebrate like the future depends on it—because it does.

When Cardi B identified herself as Afro Caribbean last week in court, the internet erupted into a loud, messy seminar. The arguments, the endless commentary revealed was how disconnected so many of us remain from the truth of the African diaspora. The question was never if she is Black or Caribbean. The real question is why we still struggle to understand that she embodies all of it at once.

I consider myself AfroCaribbean

That confusion isn’t random. It is the direct result of colonial maps, broken histories, and school systems that handed us fragments instead of wholeness. For generations, Black identity has been squeezed into boxes that deny its global depth. Yet our culture never forgot. It lives in our food, our music, our movement. You taste West Africa in Dominican mangú. You hear the pulse of Africa in the call-and-response of DC’s Go-Go music. You see the resilience of our ancestors in the festivals of Colombia’s Pacific coast. The diaspora is not theory—it is living proof that our people, scattered across continents, remain connected by rhythm, flavor, and spirit.

This is exactly why AfroGlobal Travel exists. We are not in the business of vacations. We are in the business of transformation. Our programs are designed by educators and visionaries who know that leadership is not built in conference rooms but in lived experience. Students cook alongside Afro-Pacific chefs in Cali, learn the rhythms of currulao drums, and walk the maroon paths of Palenque. Every journey sparks what we call the domino effect. One teen comes home with a renewed sense of pride, and soon peers, family, and classrooms feel it too. The transformation extends beyond the traveler—it ripples outward, shifting how whole communities understand Blackness.

That viral Glasgow TikTok was just a glimpse of global Blackness. AfroGlobal Travel makes sure our youth don’t just scroll past that truth—they experience it. From Glasgow to Cuba, Kingston to Cartagena, we’ve always been here. Now it’s time the world sees us everywhere.

When Yung Bredda dropped “The Greatest Bend Over” remix with Chloe Bailey and Moliy, the internet lit up. Beyond the beat, what stood out was its symbolism: American, Caribbean, and African voices rising together on one track. It was a sonic reminder that the diaspora is vast, interconnected, and brimming with creative energy.

But here’s the reality—while millions of us stream and celebrate, only a handful profit. That’s not cooperative economics. That’s not Ujamaa, one of the Nguzo Saba principles of Kwanzaa. Unity through music is powerful, but if it stops at playlists and parties, we miss the bigger picture.

Diaspora unity has to move beyond symbolism. We need economic collaboration, educational exchange, and political strategy. If we can gather around a remix, we can gather around an agenda. If we can harmonize on a song, we can harmonize resources across borders.

Right now, Black communities around the globe face shared struggles—marginalization, economic exclusion, and systemic inequities. Music reminds us we belong to one another, but belonging is not enough. We must act.

Why I Built It This Way

When I first studied abroad as a high school student, I was grateful—but unsettled. I saw people who looked like me, whose lives and stories were part of the country’s fabric, but our guides and teachers never mentioned them. Those stories melted into the “general history,” left unnamed and uncelebrated. I knew there was more.

That moment planted a question in me: If I could design a program, how would I make sure every student feels seen, heard, and connected?

The answer became AfroGlobal Travel. Our curriculum is built to ensure every student—especially Black students—sees themselves reflected in the narrative. Every day is designed to be memorable, with moments that connect classroom learning to real-world encounters and real-world encounters to personal growth.

I’ve spent my career teaching language through culture and culture through lived experience. My work has been recognized for integrating social justice into curriculum design, and I’ve seen firsthand how identity-affirming education changes lives.

That expertise shapes every element of our program—from pre-travel curriculum to on-the-ground immersion to post-travel leadership projects that turn insight into action. This isn’t supplemental education—it’s essential education that our students need now more than ever.
